Dieser direkten Aufforderung zum Hören entspricht anscheinend die Situation der Rezipienten: Der Brief wird bestimmten Zuhörern vorgelesen. Von daher machen auch andere Stellen des Jak einen plastischen Eindruck: 1,19 1,21 1,22 2,2ff. 5,11:
(Aufforderung): taxuavia 5,8), und es geht auch hier um Zurechtweisung (EA.f:YXEtV, 1,3.8; 2,11; 4,20; EA.EYXOC;, 1,9; 2,14). Es mag deshalb nicht überraschen, daß das 6öoc; (1")Motiv stark ausgebaut ist (2,16; 5,6 usw., dazu auch 6Ö11Y0C; [7,15; 18,13]/ 6ö11yEiv [9,11; 10,10.17]). Der Gebrauch der Parallelismen ("membrorum") und Antithesen unterstreicht auf stilistischer Ebene das Zwei-Wege-Motiv (zum Jak s. u.). Dieser Stil und dieser Inhalt sind für die alttestamentliche Weisheitsliteratur überhaupt charakteristisch. Was die literarische Gattung betrifft, ist aber nur SapS, bes. 1- 5, eine Parallele. Dagegen unterscheiden der Predigt-Stil und die Briefform den Jak von SapS. Eine in Briefform gefaßte Weisheitsschrift läßt sich für den Jak nicht nachweisen. Umso mehr muß erklärt werden, warum der Jak und zwar durch das typisch griechische Praescript: 'IuKffißoC; ... xaipEtV - als Brief hervortritt. Nun wurde der Brief "allmählich eine literarische Form ... , in der man alle möglichen Stoffe ... in zwangloser Art niederlegen konnte" (E. NORDEN)42. Der Jak ist aber, wie schon gesagt, kein Freundschaftsbrief, auch kein Empfehlungs- oder informativer Privatbrief. Eher haben wir es mit einem Bittbrief oder mit "Orders and Instructions" in Briefform 43 zu tun. Am besten kann man jedoch den Jak als eine Rede, die Bitte und Befehle/Anweisungen enthält, charakterisieren, die später als Brief publiziert wurde, wie schon die E7ttcr'toA.ai d11llocrSf:VOUC; die Reden des großen Rhetors wiedergeben. Die Briefform ist deshalb nicht vorschnell als eine Fiktion abzutun, was ein bestimmtes Konzept des Privatbriefes voraussetzen würde 44 . Deshalb wären besonders der Anfang (neben 1,1 auch 1,2 7t(1crav xapuv) und der Briefschluß (etwa 5,12: 7tpO 7tUV'tffiV, 5,13: Gesundheitswünsche) von der Phraseologie des griechischen Briefes aus 45 verständlich zu machen. Aber wichtiger ist die Briefform unter anderen Gesichtspunkten: Als Brief an die Diaspora wurden die Wichtigkeit und Autorität der Worte dieses Lehrers unterstrichen. Nach den Vorschriften von Demetrios wird der Brief zwar im Stil 'tou XapiEV'tOC; Kat 'tou tcrxvou46 geschrieben, weil 42 43 44

er aber als ein yvcolloAoy&v Kui 1tPOtpE1t0IlEVOe;47 auftritt, wird auch dadurch die Autorität der Mahnungen unterbaut. Die Verwandtschaft der paränetischen Rede mit der literarischen Form des Briefes ist auch sonst in der Urkirche zu beobachten, besonders in 2 Klem und Hebr, dessen Aoyoe; tiie; 1tUpUKAllaECOe; (Hebr 13,22) als eine in BrieHorm geschriebene literarische Rede gedacht ist. Welchem Gen u s muß aber die Rede des Jak zugeordnet werden? Wie ein Beispiel des YEVOe; ÖtKUVtKOV (vgl. Acta 24,2 - 8.10 - 21; 23,2 - 33 und in gewissem Sinn der Galaterbrief48 ) läßt sich der Jak nicht verstehen. Hinter Jak 2,18 (H.) stehen keineswegs Vorwürfe entsprechender Art. Im Jak ist auch kein Element des YEVOe; E1ttÖEtKttKOV (narratio, Hymnen, Gebete, Proklamationen, Enkomien), wie sie noch in Prov, SapS und Sir zu belegen sind, vorhanden. Man kann höchstens Jak 3,13 H. als Weisheitshymnus lesen. Im Lichte der antiken Rhetorik kommt also nur das YEVOe; aUIlßouAEUttKoV in Frage 49 . Nur darf man nicht vergessen, daß der ursprüngliche Sitz im Leben dieses genos die Staatsrede bzw. die Politik war; man darf die Unterschiede zwischen einer Staatsrede und einer Gemeinderede nicht unterschätzen. Aus diesem Grund entwickelte schon MELANCHTHON die Theorie vom genus didascalicum, dem, diesem großen Rhetoriklehrer gemäß, die neutestamentlichen Briefe und zugleich die christliche Gemeindepredigt entsprechen sollten. "Ego addendum censeo ÖtÖUaKUAtKOV genus, quod etsi ad dialecticam pertinet, tamen, ... , non est praetermittendum, ... "50. Im Unterschied zur Staatsrede setzt man hier einen gewissen consensus zwischen Prediger und Zuhörern voraus. Eine apologetische Argumentation ist hier überflüssig. Es geht um Belehrung, Tadel und Überführen. Diese rhetorische Situation paßt ausgesprochen gut auf den Jak. Unser Ergebnis läßt sich folgendermaßen kurz zusammenfassen: Der Jak ist eine für Vorlesungszwecke in BrieHorm geschriebene, protreptische, weisheitliche Rede. Die Rede ist durch diatribischen Unterricht (wohl in einem Lehrhaus) entstanden und wurde publiziert, um in den (gottesdienstlichen) Versammlungen der Gemeinde verlesen zu werden. Als Rede an eine Gemeinde, die eine hellenistische Bildung besitzt, ist das Werk auch nach rhetorischem Muster geformt, was im folgenden näher zu belegen ist.
2. Die Disposition

Die JakobusbrieHorschung ist an diesem Punkt in eine Aporie geraten. Einerseits stellt man nämlich ein Übermaß an rhetorischen Figuren und rhetori47

schem Stil fest, andererseits aber bedauert man die ePlanlosigkeit', eZusammenhangslosigkeit' dieser Schrift 51 . Diese Aporie läßt sich nur lösen, wenn nachgewiesen werden kann, daß nicht nur die einzelnen Sentenzen, sondern auch die größeren Textkompositionen, vielleicht auch der Jak als Makrotext, rhetorisch sind. Man muß die "Ca~t~ (dispositio) analysieren und die JlEPll "COU AOYOU zerlegen; nicht um rein äußerlich eine Gliederung zu erreichen, sondern um der Art des Argumentierens oder auia (Proömium [1,5] und 3,13.15.17). charakters kann man durch den Wortschatz in 3,13 -18 die Linien zu allen Teilen des Briefes ziehen. Von daher ergibt sich folgendes Bild: 64 1,2 -18: 1,19-27:
- Das Proömium65 entspricht der peroratio 5,7 - 20. 1,16 -18 ist transitus~ der die propositio schon vorwegnimmt ~ Die propositio gibt das Thema an, das im confirmatio-Teil (2,1- 3,12) und im confutatio- Teil (3,13 - 5,6) ausgefüllt wird.
Der Unterschied zwischen diesen beiden Teilen kommt in der Begrifflichkeit, der Thematik, dem Ton und den rhetorischen Formen zum Ausdruck 66 . Die Wende leitet 3,10a mit dem schroffen ou xPiJ durch zwei Bilder ein, die das Entweder - Oder deutlich aufzeigen. In 3,13 -18, einem Abschnitt, der mit der propositio vergleichbar ist, wird das Entweder - Oder als Gegensatz zwischen croq>iu ävm9EV und croq>iu E1tiYEtoroVtE~ EV tat~ a1tatat~ aihrov cruvEurox,oullEVOl UlltV).

176 verrät mit seinem Themawechsel, wie schon gezeigt wurde, die Hand des Sehers Johannes: Ihm geht es um die Schuld Roms an den blutigen Verfolgungen 'der Zeugen Jesu'. Vermutlich hat Johannes hier eine ähnlich gelagerte Aussage des Quellentextes durch Neuinterpretation verdrängt; eine solche Aussage findet sich jetzt situationslos in 1824, an die direkte Anrede an BabyIon 1822.23 angehängt. 'Propheten' sind wie 229 Bezeichnung der zum apokalyptischen Offenbarungsempfänger gehörenden Gemeindeglieder 103, 'Heilige' sind, "die zum eschatologischen Gottesvolk gehören" 104, das 1[(lV't(OV t&V EO"<paYJlEvrov E1tl tfj

Das "große Staunen" 17 6c des Visionärs wird gelöst durch die Weissagung vom "Gericht über die große Hure" 17Id. "Hure" heißt jetzt 171d.16b die Frau, nachdem sie in 17 Sb als "Erzhure" entlarvt worden ist. 172a lehnt sich wohl an Jes 2317b an, 172b.c erinnert an Jer 51 7b. Überhaupt ist die Sprache der Gerichtsweissagung alttestamentlich gesättigt 106, was im Sinne des Textes bedeutet, daß sich "die Worte Gottes" erfüllen werden. Zu vergleichen ist insbesondere Ez 23 25 - 29, wozu R. H. CHARLES treffend bemerkt: "All these statements are made by Ezekiel with regard to Jerusalem, which at one moment is spoken o( as a wo man stripped o( her garments and le(t naked, and at another as a city burnt with (ire. The writer here uses the same (igures o( Rome." 107 Die Drohweissagung gegen die Hure besagt im Klartext: "Der zurückkehrende Nero soll ... im Bunde mit den Partherkönigen Rom zerstören." lOH Ähnlich wie in der sibyllinischen Literatur fügt sich sodann an die Weissagung über den wiederkehrenden Nero in Kapitel 18 ein Kranz von Gerichts- und Klagereden 109 über Babylon-Rom an 110. V. 14, der stilistisch zu V. 21- 23 gehört ll l, ein intaktes Quellenstück zu sein, auf das der Seher Johannes zweimal, nämlich 148 und 1619, vorbereitend hingewiesen hat. Es setzt durchweg das in 1716e in Aussicht genommene Feuergericht über Babylon-Rom voraus: 18 8c.9c.18a. Nach dem redaktionellen Jubelruf 1820 folgt noch ein thematisch verwandtes Quellenstück, 1821-23, zu dem ursprünglich wohl auch der dislozierte V.14 gehörte, ein Textstück, das der Seher mit V.24, der aus dem Zusammenhang von 175 genommen sein dürfte, verklammert hat. Daß die große Namens-Passage (38 -40) vor dem Hintergrund jüdischesoterischen Gedankengutes zu verstehen ist, wird heutzutage weitgehend anerkannt 162 • Die Ruh e als Bezeichnung gnostischen Heiles mit verschiedenen Konnotationen spielt im ganzen EV eine bestimmende Rolle 163. Eine besondere Bewandtnis hat es mit der angeblichen Christologie im EV. Das dreimalige Vorkommen des Kreuzes kam schon zur Sprache 164 • Eine Streitfrage ist, ob sich im EV ein eindeutiger Doketismus konstatieren läßt: quod non 165 • Ferner, wie das Verhältnis von Jesus (20, 11.23 und 24, 8) bzw. (Jesus) Christus (18, 16 und 36, 14) zum Vater zu bestimmen ist. ARAI hat diesbezüglich - WEIGANDT folgend - die Bezeichnung 'Pneumachristologie' geprägt 166 • Der Terminus entstammt der Dogmengeschichte. In der Alten Kirche gab es die Geistchristologie als ein christologisches Modell, in dem die göttliche Komponente (die Präexistenz) Jesu Christi mit Hilfe des Begriffes 'Pneuma', Geist, als Bezeichnung der Gegenwart Gottes in ihm umschrieben wurde 167. Der Vater wirkt in Jesus, dem Erlöser, durch den Geist, oder aber der Geist erscheint im Fleische Jesu. Man kann hier sachgemäß von einer Frühform der 'Zwei Naturen-Lehre' reden. Ungeachtet dessen gilt es festzustellen, daß das Kreuzesleiden Jesu im EV als eine Realität anerkannt wird. Ferner wird das Geheimnis des Geistes in

Con il nostro sarebbe inveee da identificare l'opera dallo stesso titolo ehe, insieme eon un Vangelo di Tommaso, era in uso presso i Maniehei seeondo la testimonianza di Timoteo di Costantinopoli 33 e dello pseudo-Leonzio di Bisanzio 34 • Se dunque il prestigio di Filippo nei eireoli gnostiei pua spiegare l'attribuzione a lui del nostro testo, gia ad un prima approecio l'opera in questione appare, per stile e eontenuto, assai diversa dai vangeli eanoniei e i vari interpreti hanno sentito il bisogno di pronuneiarsi sulla natura particolare di essa. E' facile constatare come l'ipotesi dello studioso coincida in larga misura con le conclusioni enunciate da M. TARDIEU, con la differenza che, mentre quest'ultimo attribuisce la nozione di un comune corpo materiale di Gesu ad entrambe le cristologie valentiniane, J.-D. KAESTLI, procedendo per via analitica in diretto confronto con le fonti, mostra di ritenere la nozione di un corpo di sostanza psichica, visibile e ·passibile' quale, sulla base delle testimonianze di Ireneo e di Ippolito, si attribuisce ai valentiniani del ramo italico, base sufficiente per una ·teologia della croce' in quell'ambiente. Solo i valentiniani del ra mo orientale, sostenitori della dottrina del corpo esclusivamente pneumatico del Salvatore, avrebbero con cio lasciato spazio ad aporie tali da indurre a supporre l' esistenza di una parallela, ma del tutto distinta, consistenza ilica del corpo di Gesu. La questione evocata edi dimensioni troppo ampie e complesse per poter essere affrontata in questa sede. Per la parte di essa che coinvolge direttamente l'EvPh, tuttavia, ci sembra opportuno avanzare qualche osservazione. In prima luogo si notenl che gli enunciati sul tema presenti nel nostro testo (Sent. 17,82 e 91) valgono a confermare la complessid. di tradizioni in esso convergenti e la contestuale difficolta, se non impossibilita, di catalogare in senso rigidamente definito il testo medesimo nell'uno 0 nell'altro ·settore' altrimenti nota del vasto panorama valentiniano. Se infatti si puo consentire in larga misura sulla sostanziale contiguita del patrimonio dottrinale dell'EvPh rispetto alle posizioni del ramo orientale del valentinianism0 227 , proprio la Sent.82. che proclama la nascita del soma del Salvatore, prodotto nel pastos pleromatico dall'incontro del Padre del Tutto con la Parthenos "discesa in basso", nel momento della manifestazione di Gesu al Giordano, riflette piuttosto la tipica cristologia della scuola italica. Cio rende avvertito l'interprete dell'imprescindibile necessita di procedere con la massima cautela nell'esegesi deI testo, cercando innanzitutto di percepire il significato di ciascun enunciato dottrinale dall'interno e in relazione al suo contesto immediato, prima di rimandare ad altri luoghi del testo medesimo ovvero a documenti esterni che pure possono rivelarsi, se individuati opportunamente, utili parametri di confronto. 226

Tale eil easo, a nostro avviso, delle Sent. 17 e 91la eui "lettura' eongiunta non giova alla eomprensione dei signifieati rispettivi ehe anzi, ad un esame piu aeeurato, risultano del tutto antitetiei. Di fatto, eome in altra sede abbiamo ereduto di poter dimostrare 228 , la Sent. 17, piuttosto ehe rifiutare la nozione del eoneepimento verginale di Gesu, appare artieolata sul tema di Maria quale parthenos ineontaminata. La menzione delI' "altro padre" del Salvatore, distinto dal Padre pleromatieo, si iserive a nostro avviso nel quadro della dottrina valentiniana del Cristo psiehieo, "figlio' del Demiurgo, assunto dal Cristo pneumatieo al fine di offrire salvezza anehe alla sostanza psiehiea prodotta dalla "eonversione' di Sophia. Da parte sua, inveee, la Sent. 91, nel quadro di un parallelismo per eontrasto fra l'albero della eroee, strumento di morte, piantato nel "giardino" (paradeisos) dal earpentiere Giuseppe, e l'albero di vita del Paradiso (Sent. 92), afferma la paternira fisiea di Giuseppe medesimo nei eonfronti di Gesu, definito suo "seme". Soltanto a proposito di questo enunciato si pUD allora registrare una forma di eristologia "ebionita' in un testo ehe per il resto edi indubbia eonsistenza valentiniana. Gia nel nostro lavoro sul ruolo di Sophia nell'EvPh abbiamo segnalato eome l'unieo testimone di una eredenza siffatta in ambiente valentiniano sia un frammento origeniano, ehe appunto aeeomuna Ebionitae et Valentiniani nel dire il Salvatore ex ] oseph et Maria natum 229 • A. ORBE, ehe egualmente registra la notizia di Origene, ne trae argomento per ipotizzare la presenza di una dottrina valentiniana ehe faeeva di Gesu un uomo a tutti gli effetti, dotato di un eorpo materiale fino al battesimo del Giordano. Solo eon la diseesa del Cristo superiore - Spirito in quella deeisiva cireostanza, il seme terreno, derivato per il tramite di Giuseppe dal peeeato di Adamo, viene seonfitto. Truth is connected to the works of the human beings,77 and OUVU~ltC; is, in asense, the children originating in "rest," avu1tuucrtC;. ISENBERG'S "ease" is particularly unfortunate, for avu1tuucrtC; is a technical term alluding qualitatively to the bridal chamber and to the children engendered in this specific ritual setting. MENARD states that OUVU~ltC; and avu1tuucrtC; are terms designating «le caractere immuable, solide et inengendre du Dieu supreme~; and these terms are applicable, albeit indirectly, to the human being, he says.78 A person's own power is evident in his works, but, in contrast - and e correcting' the view that ouvuJ,UC; equates children the children, who are a specific instance of "works," give testimony to avu1tuucrtc;.79 EtKcOV, another technical term, refers to the human being, the image of the divine, a correlate to Truth appearing as image in the lower world. 80 So, Gos. Phil. eloquently brings out the juxtaposition in the last sentence: works originate in a person's own OUVUJ,ltC;, while offspring - at first gl an ce seemingly attributable, as "works," to the human beings themselves - are born in an aeonic quality, UVU1tuucrtC;, of which the primary humanly accessible locus is the bridal chamber. Gos. Phil. frequently ponders the relationship between father and son. 81 In Gos. Phil. 81 the special case, God and the Son of man, is explored in terms of the differences between creating and begetting,82 "There is the Son of man and there is the son of the Son of man. The Lord is the Son of man, and the son of the Son of man is he who is created through the Son of man. The Son of man received from God the capacity to create. He also has the ability to beget. He who has received the ability to create is a creature. He who has the ability to beget is an offspring. He who creates cannot beget. He who begets also has the

power to create. Now they say, "He who creates begets: But this socalled "offspring' is merely a creature. [Therefore] his children are not offspring but [creatures]. He who creates works openly and he himself is visible. He who begets begets in [private] and he himself is hidden, [since he is superior to every] image. He who creates [creates] openly. But one who begets [begets] children in private. No [one will be able] to know when [the husband] and the wife have intercourse with one another except the two of them" (p. 148-49,81, line 14-82, line 2).83 Hidden in the middle of this section is a short polemical point, "they say," directed against those who equate begetting and creating. However, as seen earlier,84 begetting is a purely spiritual activity, while creating is material. The Son of man is capable of both, because he himself is begotten. Any vice versa argument is void, for the two activities cannot be conflated. Jesus' double nature - and by implication the nature of those who are spiritually accomplished - is made evident: they are both material and spiritual. Not surprisingly, creating is allied with openness and visibility, begetting is private and belongs to the intimate sphere of spouses. In Gos. Phil. 82, the text continues its line of thought, contrasting earthly marriage with the sacrament of the bridal chamber. Only the latter is associated with will, as opposed to desire. 85 The paragraph in 82 ends, "No one shall be able to see the bridegroom with the bride unless [one become] one" (p. 149, 82, lines 24 - 26). I would place the emphasis here on "to see," for to enter into the mystery, to become the engenderers, is the requirement for the right to the contemplation. Again, the rule is that the like perceives the like. 86 As previously noted, the partakers become not only the engenderers, the bridal couple, but, paradoxically, also the offspring produced in the bridal chamber. "Nothing will be able to achieve imperishability if it does not first become a son" (Gos. Phil., p. 149, 75).87 In Gos. Phil.'s understanding, this son (i. e. "child") is the parents' sibling, for spiritual engendering produces same-generation offspring. I take the emphasis on obligation in the present, "if it does not first," in this utterance as a clue to the next issue due for investigation: Gos. Phil. 's polemical stance against the "pseudo-Christian" interpretation of time.

IV. Resurrection: time and place One of Gos. Phil.'s most conspicuous polemical themes concerns the timeaspect regarding the resurrection. In 56, the text deals with the resurrection of Jesus, and in 73, with that of the Gnostic proponents themselves. Criticizing the orthodox position, Gos. Phil. states, "Those who say that the Lord died first and (then) rose up are in error, for he rose up first and then died. If one does not first attain the resurrection will he not die?" (p. 134, 56, lines 15 - 20).88 GIVERSEN stresses this reversed time-argument, stating that the author's position on this issue may have been a contributing cause for the very origin of the gospel. 89 JANSSENS relates the utterance in 56 to Gos. Phil. 52, "A Gentile does not die, for he has never lived in order that he may die. He who has believed in the truth has found life, and this one is in danger of dying, for he is alive" (p. 132, 52, lines 15 -19).90 One might also adduce Gos. Phil. 55 (p. 133, 55, lines 4 - 5), "As for man, they offered hirn up to God dead and he lived." Life as aprerequisite for death, both for the Lord (in 56) and for the Christian (in 52), recalls "God is a man-eater," in Gos. Phil. 62-63. 91 The dead man offered to God in 56 must be understood to have found life through death. Obtaining life is no post mortem matter, however, but marks a requirement in this earthly life: 92 Gos. Phil.'s practical-sacramental argument go es along with its theological position, both supporting an unorthodox interpretation of sequence. I take the singled-out "those who say" in 56 to be referred to in Gos. Phil. 73 too, "Those who say that they will die first and then rise are in error. If they do not first receive the resurrection while they live, when they die they will receive nothing" (p. 144, 73, lines 1- 5).

"If one go down into the water and co me up without having received anything and says °1 am a Christian,' he has borrowed the name at interest. But if he receive the Holy Spirit, he has the name as a gift. He who has received a gift does not have to give it back, but of hirn who has borrowed it at interest, payment is demanded" (p. 139, 64, lines 22-29). Orthodox, ineffectual baptism is likened to a trans action in which the recipient unwittingly remains in debt. So, the dient may be unpleasantly surprised when payment is due - this very situation proves, for Gos. Phil., that the ritual did not "work." Aloof from such fears, the Gos. Phil. adherent is secure in his salvation, possessing the name "as a gift." Here, I disagree with KOSCHORKE, who detects "Heilsunsicherheit, " assuming that the Gnostic is in danger of losing the name, just as he may be unable to distinguish names from the reality behind them. 105 It is not the Gnostic who is endangered in this respect, but the orthodox, for the Church has failed to grasp an eternally secure redemption. As Gos. Phil. sees it, the Church may never perceive the difference between borrowing and gift. Evidently, the Church considers itself an efficacious institution, an indubitable, eternal reality, but Gos. Phil. knows this self-complacency to be a cover for inefficacy. As noted earlier, the Church belongs among the deceptive names,106 and the result is that the Church now doubly deludes itself: first, with respect to its own reality presumably underlying its name, and, second, regarding the

effectiveness of its baptismal ritual. 107 Contra KOSCHORKE, then, the Church, not the Gnostics, rightly harbors worries about salvation. The correct understanding of time - life and resurrection are· anterior to death, and present, effective salvation must precede a future one - links up with other, less easily detectable controversies in the text. In 67 (p. 141, line 30f.) begins a long, partly broken 108 treatment of dualistic versus monistic models of thought.
