An international team of scientists drilling deep under the bed of the Dead Sea has found evidence that the sea may have dried up during a past warm period similar to predicted scenarios for climate change in coming decades. The Dead Sea is the world’s lowestlying place on land, with shores some 1,400 feet below sea level, and salty waters going down another 1,200 feet. Fed by the Jordan River, it has shrunk rapidly over past decades, as water is pulled for farming and other uses. Near the sea’s center, under 900 feet of water, the team penetrated some 750 feet of muddy sediment, then hit a layer of nearly pure pebbles, underlain by some 120 feet of salt. The salt suggests to them that the lake dried quickly, precipitating out solids. The pebbles appear to be a beach – given their position near the middle, a signal that the sea more or less disappeared. Research by others already has shown that the sea has fluctuated, but this is the first time anyone has found that it actually disappeared. Reports by the United Nations and other bodies have cited water as a potential spark for future Mideast conflicts. In the past, the governments of Egypt and Jordan have said that they would never go to war again against Israel – except over water. “The Dead Sea has witnessed so much of human history from the migration of early humans out of Africa, habitation by early Stone Age people all the way to the Near East politics of today,” says Ito. “To think that we, the humans, are helping it perhaps dry up, is very sobering.” Ito says the Dead Sea water level has been going down by three feet to five feet each year, due to a combination of dry climate of the region and human activity. Jordan River’s water is heavily used for irrigation and little is left to flow into the Dead Sea. If the previous warm period before the last ice age is any guide, the Near East is going to become drier and drier under warming climate. The Dead Sea’s basin is a plate boundary like the San Andreas Fault in California, and the cores also contain a detailed log of past earthquakes there. When quakes occur, typically flat layers of sediment are twisted into convoluted shapes. With precise dating, these should form a history from ancient times to the present, and perhaps give a better picture of future risks faced in the region. It could help answer longstanding questions. For instance, some say the Biblical overthrow of the walls of Jericho was performed by an earthquake – but whether such a quake took place, and when, has remained controversial. The

Satellite view of the Dead Sea. research team now is in the process of doing more precise dating. The drilling, some 10 years in the making, was done under the auspices of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP), which sponsored the project and covered much of the cost.

The Latest from EPA on Hydrofracturing: Blame for Pollution The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced for the first time that hydrofracturing may be to blame for causing ground water pollution. The agency released a draft analysis of data from its Pavillion, Wyo., ground water investigation. At the request of Pavillion residents, EPA began investigating water-quality concerns in private drinking water wells three years ago. Since that time, in conjunction with the state of Wyoming, the local community, and the owner of the gas field, Encana, EPA has been working to assess ground water quality and identify potential sources of contamination. EPA constructed two deep monitoring wells to sample water in the aquifer. The draft report indicates that ground water in the aquifer contains compounds likely associated with gas production practices, including hydraulic fracturing. EPA also re-tested private and public drinking water wells in the community. The samples were 4 | NATIONALDRILLER January 2012

consistent with chemicals identified in earlier EPA results released in 2010, and generally are below established health and safety standards. To ensure a transparent and rigorous analysis, EPA is releasing these findings for public comment and will submit them to an independent scientific review panel. Chemicals detected in the most recent samples are consistent with those identified in earlier EPA samples and include methane, other petroleum hydrocarbons and other chemical compounds. The presence of these compounds is consistent with migration from areas of gas production. Detections in drinking water wells are generally below established health and safety standards. The draft finding could have significant implications while states try to determine how to regulate the process. ND

he U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Wolf Creek Dam Foundation Remediation Project reached a significant 500,000hour achievement recently.

V., the contractor for this project, has operated safely the past 263 days, and has reached 500,000 work-hours without an accident that would cause a worker to miss time on the job. David Hendrix, the district’s project manager, calls it an “amazing feat,” given the buzz of activity that occurs on the work platform every day. He says work crews constantly are moving around, and machinery and drill rigs are running continuously. “So the ability to maintain a safe work environment in these conditions is a great accomplishment,” he says. The Corps is approximately 62 percent complete on the installation of the new barrier wall, which is immediately upstream of the right-most concrete monoliths, and is being installed to stop seepage in the karst geology of the rock. When complete, the barrier wall will run the full length of the embankment into the right abutment of Wolf Creek Dam. This project is the largest and most difficult foundation remediation project in the world, claims Fabio Santillan, the contractor’s project manager. “As such, its complexity from the dam safety, quality requirements and logistics and productivity points of view is unprecedented. This unparalleled combination of requirements imposes additional challenges to those that are already 10 | NATIONALDRILLER January 2012

very stringently present on this particular branch of the construction industry. These production rates exceed those originally anticipated at the beginning of the project,” he explains. “This accomplishment demonstrates that a safe environment favors good production.” Lt. Col. James DeLapp, the Nashville District commander, says reaching the 500,000 work-hours without any significant accident is a life-, cost- and timesaving objective that the Corps and the contractor both can be proud of reaching. “It shows safety on the job is the main priority as the Corps continues to move forward as fast and safely as possible to complete the foundation remediation project,” DeLapp explains. “Accidents can ultimately cause delays, so working safe is important to us and the local communities that are eager for the project to reach its completion.” Kathy Lust, Nashville District’s resident engineer for the construction project, says the contractor is to be commended for a commitment to safety and for partnering with the Corps to put such a great emphasis on safety during all phases of work. “The construction is taking place in very confined spaces with lots of moving pieces, so working so many hours and days without accidents really is notable,” Lust says. “And working together to keep people safe is, in my opinion, the most important aspect of this achievement.” ND

hen travelling on a 1,300-foot-high bridge on a mountain known in German as “Sollstedter Hölle,” which, in English, means “Sollstedt Hell,” one wonders whether this name was going to prove to be a good omen given the job at hand. The drilling site for the project in question was being operated by boring contractor Beermann from Zeitz, Germany. The site was situated on the high plateau, approximately three miles from the nearest village. The forest lane that led to the site was just about accessible over the final 1,000 feet, with the contractor just being able to transport the boring equipment safely to the jobsite, including the truck. It took one whole working day to complete the jobsite setup. Water to mix the drilling fluid for the bore was extracted from the small river known as the Wipper, which was four

miles away. The water was pumped into tanks and transported to the jobsite using farm tractors. The reason for the boring project was the need to renew an aging gas pipe over a length of more than a mile – from the Sollstedt Hölle to the gas-pressure regulation unit in the town of Sollstedt. Furthermore, the storage capacity to regulate the availability of gas quantities also was to be improved by this renewal, and the pressure step in the pipes was to be increased from 25 bar up to 70 bar. The main contractor, E.ON Thüringer Energy from Erfurt, Germany, awarded the task of carrying out this construction project to Boyen & Doyen from Erfurt, which, in turn engaged Beermann Bohrtechnik GmbH of Riesenbeck, Germany, to carry out the HDD bore. (HDD - Continued from Page 12) The HDD rig chosen to install the new bore was a GRUNDODRILL, Type 25 N, a unit which Beermann had been successfully applying on boring projects since 2008. The rig already had reached an impressive 3,800 operating hours prior to this work. Operator Lutz Dietze says, “The longest bore we had to complete was more than 1,500 feet on a project in Hamburg; the thickest pipe we have pulled in with the machine was a 20-inch-diameter long-distance energy pipe.” In the area of a steep slope with a gradient of 78 percent, the gas pipe ran aboveground. This section was to be replaced by a parallel underground bore over a total length of approximately 500 feet. The distance between the HDD rig and the start of the steep slope was approximately 230 feet. This made an entrance angle of about 42 percent necessary to be able to meet precisely the planned bore exit point at the foot of the steep slope at the end of the continuous straight line bore. In comparison to most projects where the bore entrance angle usually is at 10 percent to 24 percent, this bore angle was very acute.

The ground conditions on the bore: Layers of partially weathered and partially very solid limestone rock, which often were clearly visible on the surface of the steep terrain. The pilot bore had to be prepared taking into account these ground conditions. A mud motor could not be applied, due to the very tight working conditions and the inclination of the bore. Therefore, the use of an aggressive boring head with special hard metal bore tips seemed to be the only solution. A depth sonde (with 90 feet of depth capacity), from specialist steering systems manufacturer DCI, was fitted for the monitoring and steering. The cover on the steep slope was almost 85 feet deep in parts. 10-inch and 14-inch-diameter reamers, followed relatively quickly, with the runs taking just five minutes per drill-rod length to pull through. The drilling fluid consumed was collected at the target point, and passed on to a second, deeper pit at the access road. From there, the drilling fluid was disposed of by use of a suction/vacuum transporter. The fluid consumption was considerable. After each expansion bore, the backreamer was pushed back through the borehole in order to compress and rinse out the bore spoils from inside the bore at its deepest point. This cleaning process was vital in order to prevent the product pipe getting stuck when it was finally pulled in. After

the final cleaning process, the bore was thoroughly cleaned and made ready for installation of the product pipe. Some 12 8-inch OD steel pipes (with a PE and reinforced glass fiber coating) were welded together, x-rayed and checked for tightness with water at 100 bar. Then the PE and reinforced glass fiber coating was reinstated at the welding point. Installed along with the gas pipe were four 2-inch-diameter HDPE pipes – pulled in to host the control cable, and also for the filling of the annular space, which is necessary after the installation. (HDD - Continued from Page 14) A Bagela cable winch pulled the pipe string uphill to the borehole. The pipe installation process began as soon as the final backreamer had been connected. About 90 minutes later, Dietz announced the completion of the installation. The bore annulus sealing was carried out the next day. To do this, the borehole was lagged at the bore exit point, giving the security that the seal would withstand all strains during the filling process. The filling of the annular space

From the bore exit point, the pipeline installation proceeded using the opentrench method. A milling cutter already had excavated a four-foot-deep trench up to the point where it could no longer be applied. All participants were impressed with the performance of the Beermann bore team. HDD in Environmentally Sensitive Areas

There are a number of additional factors to take into consideration when a project involves special environmental concerns. orizontal directional drilling can be a challenge under ideal conditions, but when you get projects that have a number of environmental agencies on both the state and federal levels involved, things can get quite interesting and expensive. The added expenses alone need a thorough examination when bidding a project. On a recent project in Santa Barbara County, California, a number of such is-

sues existed. The project consisted of a number of borings that crossed under a few streams, a major highway and a series of railroad tracks. The streams presented the most difficult obstacle, as they contained protected species of fish and other aquatic life. Preventing any drilling fluids from entering the stream was of the utmost concern. All necessary precautions needed to be

taken; plans and materials needed to be in place prior to doing any work. If there was a loss of fluid returns or a frac-out at any time, the drilling operation immediately would shut down, and the source of the problem found and corrected. For any fracouts, the drilling fluids must be 100-percent contained and monitored, and the drilling operation adjusted to correct the problem. Pumps, storage tanks, Brady/frac

barrels, sand bags, barrier materials and all other necessary containment materials had to be on-site and ready for use. (See figure 1 above.) Along with the containment supplies, a 5,000-gallon to 8,000-gallon vacuum truck was required on-site or on standby at all times while drilling, in

At the drill site, all stationary equipment (drill rig, fluid tanks, recycling unit, mixing systems) had to have heavy plastic material placed under them, with a

berm around it, to contain any drilling fluid leaks or spills. (See figure 2 above.) A minimum 10,000-gallon frac tank was on-site to contain or store any mixed or contaminated drilling fluid. Roll-off open tanks were used to contain the spoils off

the fluid-recycling unit, and were to be monitored for any contamination. If earth pits were used to contain the spoils, they also needed to be lined with a heavy plastic material. During the fueling of any equipment, a catch basin was placed to

contain any fuel that may have spilled. In addition, any oil leaks – regardless of how small – needed to be addressed immediately. Every time the drilling operation was shut down, any open pits needed to be covered and sealed to ensure no protected frog or other animals could fall in. The open pits were monitored closely in the morning to ensure no protected species wandered on-site. Several environmental inspectors were on-site at all times to monitor the area and to ensure operations were in line with their requirements. They were very specific in awarding the special permits for the project. Along with inspectors, the project required a qualified drilling-fluids specialist on-site while any drilling was going on and to monitor the drilling fluid. Another requirement on one of the sites was a wash area that required any vehicle that entered the site be washed off before leaving the site. They wanted to ensure that anything on-site, which was next to an avocado grove, would not be carried onto another grove. The washdown site was set up next to the road, and required a fresh supply of water and a pressure washer to meet the requirements, which added additional costs and time to the project. (See figure 3 above.) Drilling fluids for a project with such a high level of environmental concern also need to be considered very closely. Some projects only will allow for foodgrade bio-degradable fluids, which can add greatly to costs. This project only allowed for drilling fluids that were NSF/ ANSI Standard 60-certified. In order to use a product on this project, all products needed to have a complete submittal package submitted. The submittal package contained complete technical data and MSDS. Complete records were maintained on the drilling fluid viscosity, weight, pH and grit content during the drilling operation. As you can see, there are many added considerations when looking at an HDD project that has a number of environmental concerns. These projects need a complete review before bidding, and all the added expenses need to be considered. These projects also can carry some large fines for not adhering to the specific requirements. Overall, the projects can be quite profitable when done properly, and can open the door to your company for other projects of this nature. ND Jim Piasecki is a regional manager for CETCO.

Shul spoke of his amazing experiences that brought him from near-death in a Vietnam jungle to piloting experimental spy planes today – a truly inspiring account of courage and resolve. On the trade show floor, there were a good many first-time exhibitors, and the veteran exhibitors had a lot of newand-improved technologies to show off. That meshed well with the Expo’s overall vibe of “yeah, things have been tough, but we’re still doing what we do best, looking to improve, and planning ahead for the good things on the horizon.” Outside of the classrooms, exhibit hall and various meetings and receptions, attendees also had the chance for some fun, including the rare opportunity of a behind-the-scenes “Elvis at the Hilton” guided tour of the theater Elvis Presley performed in, as well as his private dressing room, suite and the penthouse, “Sky Villas,” which he called home while performing at the Las Vegas Hilton. side to smoke. That’s when I realized I wasn’t dressed for -15 degrees F. As it got closer to takeoff time, the airline called my name. I went to the desk to learn that they had overbooked the flight, and I was being bumped. Since I was a little short on sleep and had been in the field for 44 days, this didn’t sit too well with me – plus, my ride had long since left. Needless to say, I went off on them. I won’t name the airline – it begins with “D” – but I questioned its business practices, its owners

and employees’ ancestry and everything else I could think of at a pretty high volume – entertained the whole airport. I realized that cursing wouldn’t do any good, as there was a cop standing right beside me, fingering his handcuffs, but I used every other derogatory English word I could muster. It didn’t do a lick of good. They had overbooked the flight by six people, as if somebody – maybe ice fishermen or something – might just decide to stay in America’s own Siberia for the fun of it. I pitched a futile fit until they wrote me a check for $1,300 on the spot to shut me up. It worked

for about five minutes, and then I began to question whether or not the check was any good. They said that of course it was. I told them that I hoped it was better than their reservation methods. Eventually, a beat-up minivan showed up to take us to the next airport down the road – Devil’s Lake, 120 miles away. All of us happy campers crammed in for another ice drive. When we got to Devil’s Lake, the plane was frozen to the ground. Took ‘em four hours to thaw it loose. They packed us in a small prop plane that shook like a dog passing peach pits. By the time we limped into Minneapolis, it was well after dark and snowing hard – looked like they might close the airport. I also missed my connection to Atlanta. Finally, I got on a red-eye to Atlanta and arrived after midnight, sans luggage. My blood pressure meds were in there, and I sure was needing them about then. Since the airline was bending over backwards to take care of me and keep a customer, they gave me a voucher for $6 to buy dinner. Have you ever tried to buy a meal for $6 in an airport? They wouldn’t even let me apply it to the bar

tab. Next, in the name of customer relations, they put me up in a Motel 6. Wow. I’m pretty sure I was the only normal one in the building; now that’s a scary thought. I called the airline to find out when my final connecting flight home to Lottie’s tender embrace was, and found out it was at 3:30 p.m. Great, now another ridiculous wait. I had left the rig Friday night, and now it was Sunday. I had intended to go to church with my family Sunday morning, so I looked outside the motel to see if there was a nearby church I could attend. The only altar I saw where I might worship was wearing fishnet hose, and that’s not the kind of service I had in mind. I finally got home about dark, Sunday, 36 hours after I left the rig. I can go to Poland in half that time. I’m gonna write to the airline and tell them what I think. Won’t do a bit of good, but my blood pressure will come down if I vent a little. In a couple days, it’ll be time to go back to work. What will you bet they get me there in record time? That’s always the way it works. Stay safe, stay warm, and keep ’em turning to the right. Sealing the Wellhead The fundamentals of pumped water systems

ne of the most important factors when installing a water well system is to provide a method of protecting the wellhead so that surface water, debris, insects and vermin do not enter the well. There are two primary methods used to provide wellhead protection. The two methods differ in the way the discharge pipe exits the well. The first method is used when the discharge exits the well casing underground, below the frost line; it utilizes a pitless unit, or pitless adapter and a well cap. The second uses a sanitary well seal, and the discharge pipe exits the well straight out of the top, aboveground. It follows that if you need to provide freeze protection at the wellhead, use the pitless method, and if you don’t, use a well seal. Pitless units and adapters are so named because they allow the discharge pipe connection to be made below the frost line without having the well casing terminate in a concrete vault or pit, thus, the term, “pitless.” The difference between a pitless unit and a pitless adapter is that a pitless unit includes a short section of well casing that is connected to the top of the primary well casing (see Figure 1). A pitless adapter, on the other hand, uses the primary well casing as its housing (see Figure 2). Both allow for the easy removal of the pump because the connection between the drop pipe and the side outlet slides apart as the drop pipe and pump are hoisted out of the well. Pitless units are much larger and stronger than pitless adapters, and therefore are used in most large or deep wells where a considerable amount of weight must be supported. Pitless adapters, on the other hand, are used in most residential wells where there is less weight to be supported, because they are less expensive and easier to install. If you

are installing a fairly deep pump on steel drop pipe, though, make sure to check the specs on your pitless adapter to make sure it will support the weight. A pitless adapter will support 200 feet to 600 feet of steel drop pipe, depending on the type and design. A pitless unit, on the other hand, will support more weight than the drop pipe threads, which will fail before the pitless unit fails. Whether using a pitless unit or pitless adapter, check with the pitless manufacturer to make sure that the parts you choose will support the weight of your drop pipe, pump cable, column of water and the pump.

Installation Overview I will not go through a step-by-step installation procedure in this article because the pitless manufacturers include very good installation instructions with their products. However, a brief installation overview seems appropriate to give you a sense of what is required to accomplish this part of a pumped water system installation. First of all, the earth around the wellhead must be excavated to below the frost line to facilitate installation of both pitless types. Pitless units are connected to the well casing by welding, threading or with a compression connection. They must be ordered with the specific size and type of connections needed to mate up with the well casing and outlet piping on your particular job. Pitless adapters are installed by drilling or flame-cutting a hole in the side of the well casing, and attaching the stationary part of the adapter to the hole by welding, threading or clamping. The movable part of the pitless adapter is threaded onto the top of the drop pipe, and is attached to the stationary part by sliding it into a slot or hole. O ring seals are used to provide a watertight joint.

Well caps are an important part of all pitless systems. They provide the required seal at the wellhead, a method of getting the pump cable out of the well, and venting of the well (see Figure 3). They should be carefully selected to provide the type of protection needed for the particular well at hand. If the well is in a flood plane, a watertight cap should be used. Otherwise, a less expensive ventilated cap can be used.

Well Seal Installation If you install pumps in an area where freezing is not a problem, a well seal can be used (see Figure 4). Well seals are easy to install, inexpensive, and provide excellent wellhead protection when properly installed. They consist of a top plate and bottom plate made of steel, cast iron or plastic, and a packer made of rubber or soft plastic. The top plate is larger than the outside diameter of the well casing, and the packer and bottom plate are sized to fit the inside of the well casing. The two plates are held together with bolts that squeeze the packer when tightened, forcing it against the inside of the well casing, creating a watertight seal. Besides the bolt holes, well seals have additional holes for the drop pipe (or twin pipes in a jet pump system), the pump cable and the vent. A seal for 8-inch well casing and 11⁄4-inch drop pipe would be ordered as an 8-by-11⁄4. Your choice of steel, cast iron or plastic will depend on the load to be supported, the local codes, and what is popular and available in your area. Make sure to accurately calculate the weight of the drop pipe, pump, pump cable and water column to make sure the well seal will support the load. This is particularly important when using cast iron, cast aluminum or plastic well seals, because they do not have the load-carrying capacity of seals made from steel plate. For deep-set applications involving lots of down-hole weight, extra-heavyduty steel well seals are available. Installing a well seal is a simple matter: 1. Slip the seal down over the drop pipe, while supporting the drop pipe string from below the well seal with a pipe holder (Figure 5). 2. Run the pump cable through the wire hole into a conduit or a J-Box. 3. Screw one of the run ends of a pipe tee onto the drop pipe. 4. Lower the string until the tee is down on the seal, and the seal is seated on the well casing. 5. Tighten the bolts to squeeze the packer against the inside of the well casing. 6. Install a plug in the top of the tee, and you are done.

Local Code Requirements Before installing any type of wellhead protection, check your local codes to see if there are any particular requirements that must be met. Some states are very specific about the types of well caps and seals

Code compliance in the wellhead area is one of the most important aspects of a properly completed well. By paying careful attention to the codes, the choice of components and the installation, you can be assured of providing your customer with a safe and sanitary well. SD1 is responsible for the collection and treatment of Northern Kentucky’s wastewater, as well as regional storm water management, and is the second-largest public sewer utility in the state. The district’s service area covers approximately 220 square miles in three Northern Kentucky counties, serving more than 30 municipalities and several unincorporated areas. SD1 maintains more than 1,600 miles of sanitary sewer line, more than 140 wastewater pumping stations, several treatment plants, and approximate(Continued on Next Page)

the rack power unit, along with drill casing and the drill head. Located outside the launch pit is a highperformance liquid ring vacuum power unit that removes excavated material from the bore. Upon reaching the launch pit, the excavated material transitions from the drill casing to a 6-inch-diameter hose that runs up the launch pit to the vacuum tank. Outside the pit is a self-contained power unit that features a 140-HP diesel engine, and hydraulic pumps that connect to a rack (located in the launch pit) that powers rotation, thrust and pullback functions of the drill head and casing. The operator console is designed to centralize control of multiple components into an easy-to-use interface, and consists of the target display monitor, parameter display, drill-head steering control, thrust/pullback control, rotation control and vacuum controls. Drill casing segments, measuring 6.5 feet long, are placed in the rack carriage, and feature a laser sight channel and a vacuum channel for removing excavated material. The guidance system includes a laser that determines the line and grade of the bore, enabling on-grade accuracy throughout the bore process. The drillhead uses a flat-face cutter, that when combined with the

It was to be installed at 1.3-percent grade using auger boring as the installation method. The greatest challenge, however, was neither the grade nor the material, or even restricted access to the site – which would necessitate traversing over hilly, heavily wooded terrain – but as often is the case, it would be ground conditions posing the bigger concern. After reviewing the plan, however, David Howell, a project manager for Midwest Mole, had an idea for an alternative approach. “This was in a residential area with a lot of trees, on a hill, and with very limited access,” Howell relates. “It was was solid rock. SD1 had designed it to basically be bored through the hill with the auger-boring method. We had used the Vermeer AXIS guided-boring system on a project before, and thought it might be a good fit here. Our only real concern was backreaming through rock.”

(Backreaming - Continued) laser-guidance system, is capable of completing bores with precise tolerances of on-grade accuracy. In standing ground, it can be retracted in mid-installation, allowing the contractor to change the cutter bit to adapt to changing soil conditions.

Enhanced Efficiency The rock was composed of layered shale with veins of limestone formations ranging from 1 inch to 5 inches thick, and measuring upwards of 12,000 psi. The overhead power line and an existing pump station located within close proximity of where the launch pit area would need to be situated also were factors. However, after verifying the location of the sewer lines currently running in and out of the pump station, and sizing up the final measurements for positioning the various components of the AXIS system, Howell was confident that this laser-guided boring method was, indeed, the best approach, and officials with SD1 concurred. “While we agreed that it certainly would have been possible to complete the job using auger boring, we were able to identify several advantages that favored the AXIS system, and presented these findings to officials at our longtime customer, SD1. They weren’t all that familiar with this method, but we had worked with

(Backreaming - Continued) tor to continuously monitor the boring process and make adjustments when changes in rock density and hardness alter the path of the drillhead, albeit ever so slightly. Another important advantage for the AXIS system given the rocky Northern Kentucky terrain, coupled with the smaller-diameter material that was to be installed for the Florence project, is the ability to complete it in one pass. “Auger boring would have necessitated a two-pass approach,” Howell explains. “The casing pipe would have to be installed first, followed by the new carrier pipe threaded inside that. And likely this approach also would have required that we grout the material in place. Not so using the AXIS system, however, as the carrier pipe could be installed directly in the bore minus the steel casing. So, in essence, we eliminated a step, and that equates to less time and reduced expense.” Midwest Mole used a 13½-inch tri-cone bit for the pilot bore, and achieved an average production rate of 14 feet per hour through this complex compilation of rock formations. With the HDPE pipe fused and ready on the receiving end, it was time to face the unknown and begin the backreaming phase of the project. The one unknown, however, was whether the AXIS system would be able to backream through this difficult formation of limestone, shale and high-density rock, having only pulled product back through the bore on previous installations. Howell’s crew selected a 19 1⁄4-inch tri-cone cutter head for navigating the 506-foot bore with roller cones – a tooling configuration considered to be effective for removing rock, and best positioning the reamer during pullback. “This was the first time the AXIS system had been used to ream rock, so there was obviously some trial and error involved at first,” Howell says. “We made some adjustments along the way to get the cutter spacing set with the correct over-cut to allow the reamer to work most efficiently. We had a pulling head attached to the back side of the reamer on a swivel, which helps to clear the bore, so we were pulling the product pipe back in as the hole was reamed. We used the standard Vermeer reamer design custom-built with roller-cone cutting heads.”

ast month, I wrote about galvanized steel pipe as drop pipe for several types of pumps, and some of the problems associated with this material. I realize that galvanized pipe still is used in many areas, certainly on larger submersibles, and while it has some problems, in certain conditions, it is a good material. In the years right after World War II, the jet pump became far and away the favorite-type pump used here in Michigan. It was a much simpler system than the stroke pumps we had used in deeper settings, and the submersible was in its infancy and not very popular at all. A new-

and-improved solution to drop pipe used with jet pumps, at least those of the two-pipe design, was to use the newly introduced plastic pipe, which was a black-colored polyethylene material. This plastic pipe seemed like a godsend, as it uncoiled like a garden hose, could easily be cut to any length, and did not require threading, as it used so-called slip-type fittings held tight with a clamp. The fittings were necessary then, as now, to get back to IPS, or iron pipe-size threaded joints to connect to the pump proper and ejector bodies. Polyethylene plastic had the additional benefit of being much lighter in weight than black or galvanized steel, and one could make up an entire length needed for a system and just slide it into the well casing. Perfection in itself – well, maybe not quite. After a few years of use, the shortcomings of this type of pipe started to become apparent. The first of these was that this early poly-pipe didn’t have a real high working pressure. If I recall correctly, we installed a lot of 80-psi-rated pipe and maybe some that was rated at 60 psi. This was fine, as we were, after all, running 40 psi maximum on our system. What we installers failed to realize was as the pipe went down in the well, every foot above the water line gave us added pressure, and sometimes this was enough additional pressure to cause the pipe to fail. Looking back, I think perhaps the manufacturing methods of those days weren’t as good as we have today. In any event, we started to experience splits in the poly-pipe, and it had to be pulled up and repaired. This brought to our attention another drawback – the pipe had to pulled by hand. Now, unlike installation, where we had dry pipe, many times the pipe or pipes were full of water, as the splits were small enough that the pipe was not self-draining. Unlike steel pipe, this poly-pipe did not lend itself to a mechanical means of lifting. So we had

to “horse” it out of the well, and it could get darn heavy. On top of that, below the water line, the pipe sometimes would be covered with a light coating of rust, which almost seemed slimy. One really had to get a grip, or the whole assembly would slip back into the well. I realize today we have plastic pipe-lifting systems, which usually are some sort of a largediameter drum that rotates under power. I do not have one of these, but I can see how that would make pulling poly-pipe from a well much, much easier. One manufacturer – there may have been more – made a really handy dual-type pipe that was one part 11⁄4 inch and another 1 inch, and they were connected together with a light web. This pipe was real handy to use, as both sections of pipe were tied together, and it went into and came out of the well like one big piece of pipe. Unfortunately, this design really was prone to splitting, and we only used this type a few times, and swore off of it for good. I don’t think this type of dual pipe is made anymore. Another problem that soon became apparent was that the slip fittings we used pretty much all were galvanized steel, and these were subject to corrosion and incrustation, just like steel pipe itself. In later years, including to today, manufacturers began to provide these fittings made of brass or stainless steel, and that was the solution to fitting problems. I, for one, have pulled many jet systems, only to find a pin hole or holes near the jet body, just like the corrosion that occurred with submersibles that I mentioned in my last column. There were nonmetallic slip fittings available, and while some of these left something to be desired, they did solve the problem of corrosion. Another problem that occurred was failure of the clamps that tightened the poly-pipe to the adapter. Some of these were carbon steel, while others (Continued on Next Page)

(Schmitt - Continued) were stainless steel bands with carbon steel screws to hold them tight; these both could fail under tough conditions. Manufacturers eventually made available completely stainless steel clamps, and this is the type I have used for many, many years; they have solved the clamp failure problem. A lot of this poly-pipe was used in trenches for water distribution, and where the well was offset from the pump location. When burying poly-pipe in a trench, you wanted to make darn sure you had good slip fittings and the best-quality clamps, as failure would result in a nasty digup job.

The combination of poor pressure capabilities and fitting failure finally caused our company to quit using poly-pipe for drop pipe on jet pumps. We went back to either galvanized steel or, strange as it may seem, copper tubing. I will write about this use in a future column. In the late 1950s, manufacturers developed what then was called high-molecular weight or high-density polyethylene. This was available in pipe rated at 100 psi, 120 psi and 160 psi. This, along with improved slip fittings and all stainless clamps, pretty much solved the problems of using polyethylene for drop pipe, and my company went back to using it. We also used thousands and thousands of feet for

water distribution lines. Like any process, it took a while to get all the bugs out, but today, polyethylene or PE pipe, as it is sometimes called, is an excellent product that rarely fails. Many installers in my area now hang submersibles on 160-psi-rated poly-pipe, and it seems to work very well. With the exception of the reeltype lifter, we still haven’t solved the lifting problem. I even have heard of single-pipe jet installations in 2-inch and 3-inch wells using polyethylene as the drop pipe. I never have done this, but if the well produced mineral-free water, I can see how it would work. Next time, I will relate how we used copper tubing as drop

pipe, and finally got to PVC material, which is very, very popular in this area today. As I am writing this in very late November, I am getting ready to leave the day after tomorrow for Las Vegas and NGWA Expo. I hope that by the time you read this, I have seen many of you there, and we will have had a chance to visit. Today, as this is written, it is rainy and dreary in southern Michigan; the grass finally has stopped growing and has kind of a yellowish-green look to it. We have yet to have any snow that lasted more than a few minutes, but we know for sure it is coming. Hope you have had a good 2011, and that 2012 is the best yet. ND

he world’s largest vibratory hammer recently drove the world’s largest pile in seven and one-half minutes. American Piledriving Equipment Inc., with cooperation with First Harbor Engineering Communications Bureau, drove the first pile for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. The first pile was 72 feet in diameter, 131 feet tall, and weighed 500 tons. It was driven by a series of eight Super Kong vibratory hammers, all running in synchronicity. Each hammer puts out 20,000-inch-pounds of force. The first pile took about three hours to place into the exact correct position. The difficultly level of the placement was due to the fact that not only did the pile need to be in the precise GPS location, it also needed to be faced in the correct degree to line up the interlocks on each side of the pile. More than 40 top engineers participated in the coordinating of the driving procedure, with a total of 60 people directly involved in making sure the first pile drove successfully. In addition, most of the top engineers for the bridge project, safety administration,

ventually, every water well drilling contractor will encounter a challenging job that tests his skills as well as his patience. Over my years in the drilling industry, I have run into many well problems as well as the solutions that solved them. There have been many such situations over the years, however, the following stand out in my mind. 1. Problem: A customer’s water well pump wouldn’t build pressure. The grass, green around the well, told us that the offset line apparently had broken at the pitless adapter. Solution: Dig a hole beside the casing, and repair the PVC. Everything was OK. 2. Problem: A well was contaminated, and the well drilling contractor of the new well would not assist the owner with the contamination, stating that it wasn’t his problem. My son and I took on the job, and discovered that surface water was entering an abandoned well almost 100 feet away from the new well. The surface water was entering the old well near the surface, and traveling down to the first fractured rock, then traveling along the fractured rock and

into the new well. The old well casing had been cut off below the surface, and the old well never had been properly plugged. Solution: The surface was saturated, and when digging at approximately one foot, we found the old casing. We suspected surface water was running into the old well and down to a fractured rock. We installed a temporary casing above ground on the old well. Then we plugged the old well from the bottom to the top with concrete. The static level went down immediately in the new well. We super-chlorinated the new well with 500 gallons of water and bleach. Afterward, we pumped the new well for one week, and the water tested OK. We removed the temporary casing in the old well, covered it and marked the location. 3. Problem: A new well was contaminated, we suspected from nearby hog lot. The old abandoned well was 10 feet from the new well. The customer had plugged the old well by pouring dry cement in the top of the old well, and it bridged at the water level. Solution: We drilled out the sur-

face plug in the old well and cleaned the well to the bottom. We cemented the old well from bottom to the top, placed the cement plug in the new well at 50 feet, let it set for 24 hours, and then cemented the casing inside under pressure from 50 feet to the top to hopefully plug any fractured rock formations. In 48 hours, we drilled out the casing, and cleaned the well to the bottom. We installed the pump, pumped for 24 hours and had the water tested; it tested OK. 4. Problem: A new well was contaminated: You could hear water running in the new well. We focused sunlight down the well with a mirror, and you could see a stream of water running into the well at the bottom of

the casing at 10 feet. Solution: We removed the casing, and reamed the hole to 30 feet. We set 30 feet of new casing into the newly reamed hole, and grouted with neat cement to the top. We cleaned the hole to the bottom, and then superchlorinated the well with thousands of gallons of water and chlorine. We installed the pump and pumped for 30 days. The water tested OK. 5. Problem: In a new Pennsylvania well, the casing apparently was seated into fractured rock. Surface water was leaking into the well below the casing, and was contaminated. Photo courtesy of USGS. because we couldn’t remove casing, we installed a cement plug at the top of the water level, and let it set for 24 hours. Then we cemented the well from the plug to as near the top of the casing as possible. We let it set 48 hours, and then drilled out the remaining cement inside the casing and the hole and cement plug. We cleaned the hole to the bottom, and tested the gpm flow with air. Afterward, we super-chlorinated the well with 500 gallons of water and chlorine. Then we reinstalled the pump, and pumped for 48 hours. The water tested OK. I have presented these scenarios to demonstrate that there are solutions for troublesome well jobs, provided you have the willingness to do what it takes to solve the problems. ND

Multiple-depth Monitoring Well Installation Hydrogeologic investigations in the San Diego area

Installation of 2-inch PVC pipe, which will allow access to specific depths to measure water levels and sample water quality.

Core samples are taken from selected depths using a wire-line device. Cores help correlate geologic layers.

ultiple-depth monitoring wells provide critically important data to aid in understanding complex hydrogeology, such as that found in the coastal San Diego area. Because no comprehensive study of ground water resources has been done for the San Diego area, a major element of a current U.S. Geological Survey study is to install multiple-depth wells in selected areas of four coastal river basins. The United States Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the City of San Diego, installed a 1,500-foot-deep monitoring well. The site was chosen to determine hydrologic conditions between previously installed wells, identify geologic units, integrate data from other wells, ensure long-term data collection, and provide for water management. The well has five separate two-inch 54 | NATIONALDRILLER January 2012

PVC piezometers, installed to selected depths. These piezometers will be monitored for ground water levels and sampled for ground water quality. The well site will be a permanent installation, and will provide data for decades. Results from the drilling will help define the quantity and quality of ground water in the coastal San Diego area. If sufficient ground water is identified, it may provide an additional local resource. The drilling process took about four weeks to complete. The hours of operation each day, including weekends, were 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. During the first three weeks, noise levels were typical of those associated with heavy equipment. During the final week, noise was reduced as the well was constructed and the site was restored to its original condition. Subsequent well development and water-quality sampling will be relatively unobtrusive. ND

This tank is in compliance with new ground water rules that are prescribed by the EPA for transient public water systems. The tank design incorporates an inner baffle and diffuser inside the composite retention tanks, and comes in two sizes – 80 gallons and 119 gallons.

The J400 chemical brush from Cotey Chemical Corp. is designed to use two interchangeable brushes to clean 8-, 10-, 12-, 14-, 16-, 18-, 20-, 22- and 24inch casing. A 4-inch pipe thread bail with ¾-inch shackle allows it to be run on cable. The unit is 48 inches long, and weighs 165 pounds.

The Explorer 1500 from Foremost Industries is a mineral exploration rig that incorporates reverse-circulation drilling technology. It is mounted on a Foremost articulated carrier with large terra tires for exceptional mobility. The high-flotation terra tires help minimize environmental impact, while allowing the Explorer to travel at speeds up to 10 mph. The carrier deck can be leveled hydraulically to facilitate drilling on sloped terrain.
