I found it to be highly motivating. What will also motivate you is the issue that you hold in your hands. For anyone in business who’s worried about stagnation, or asking the question, “Who moved my cheese?” I say, fear not. This issue includes industry insight for what 2012 holds, as well as the near future of the flexible packaging business. From what we’ve compiled in this issue, it seems the flexible packaging industry is alive and will continue to grow. So the question to ask yourself is – Are you prepared to grow with it? To get a pulse on the industry, Flexible Packaging interviewed a small group of executives from the industry. An eye-opening industry report can be found on page 28, which offers very positive news for the flexible packaging industry. Of all the articles you read, this one is an absolute must – that is, if you want to know how your business will do in the coming years. Our Printing section covers the Digital realm of printing, with a company that, after it added a digital printer, has the ability to tackle short-runs and specialty labels with ease (page 30). The Technology section of this month’s issue, on page 34, is titled The Art of Roll Protection. 2012 FLEXIBLE PACKAGING ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS INNOVATION SHOWCASE Celebrating Industry Innovation & Achievement

T

he entries of the 2012 FPA Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards competition underscore the value of flexible packaging and encompass outstanding breakthroughs in flexible packaging materials, shelf impact, product protection, and sustainability. The 86 flexible packaging entries (126 competition category entries) of the 2012 competition are featured within this issue of the FPA Update, and presented in alphabetical order by package name. The names of the packages’ manufacturer are also provided. FPA will announce the winning entries of the 2012 FPA Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards competition on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 during the 2012 Welcome & Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards Dinner. The dinner will be held in conjunction with the 2012 FPA Annual Meeting (February 22-24, 2012) in Scottsdale, Arizona. Gold and Silver Achievement Awards will be presented in four categories including Packaging Excellence, Technical Innovation, Printing Achievement, and Sustainability & Environmental Achievement. The Highest Achievement Award is presented to a Gold Award winning entry ranked by the judges as having contributed most to the advancement of the industry.

STANSBURY: We expect that the converting industry will continue to strengthen in 2012 following some solid gains last year. Some of the areas that have the strongest manufacturing and converting industries show lower unemployment rates, for example, than their states as a whole. So in Wisconsin, in the Green Bay area where converting is robust, the unemployment rate has been running almost one-half percent below the state rate of 7.3 percent.

the Årst 3 quarters of 2011, it is critical to recognize that we function in an environment impacted on a daily basis by international events and markets. Our industry competes against Chinese imports and Central and South American competitors with signiÅcantly lower overhead and labor rates than we have here in the U.S. While I anticipate a modest improvement in the performance of the U.S. economy in 2012, given the fragility of the European Union with regard to stability caused by banking and debt issues, it would not take much to draw the U.S. back into a minimal to negative economic performance in 2012. Any proÅt or performance enhancing products providing a strategic competitive advantage should be reviewed and adopted in an effort to increase proÅtability and performance.

FP: What do you think will be the biggest asset in this industry for 2012? TREMPER: The North American converters’ capacity to innovate, adapt and quickly deliver is by far our greatest asset. Quick turnaround, just in time deliveries continue to dominate the majority of the converters that I interact with regularly. Over the years, increased print quality expectations, cheaper prices and faster deliveries have dominated our industry. TREMPER: Maintaining our leadership position in the Western market will be an ever increasing challenge this year and for the foreseeable future. The trend of the Mexican Maquiladora with U.S. based management ofÅces and south-of-the border manufacturing made popular in the 1990’s has been replaced with U.S. converters partnering with Caribbean, Central and South American converters. An enormous amount of capital equipment investment has taken place in these markets over the past years with sales of capital equipment exceeding 24 placements over the past 18 months. These are not low-end, second-tier supplied equipment, but the leaders of the industry supplying state-ofthe-art equipment to well trained and well organized competitors with signiÅcantly lower overhead and labor expenses. By selling into the U.S. and Canada, or to former customers of Canadian and American converters, these companies are able to obtain market share, increase free capital and reinvest in more equipment at accelerated rates.

STANSBURY: One of the major concerns is the ability to compete with imports. The efÅciency of converters has kept many out front, but staying ahead is a real challenge. However, sometimes we forget our exports are sought after too. Also, certain products that are commodities or not high-value items tend to be produced and sold regionally.

TREMPER: Every converter needs

to carefully consider their position

within the market. Having equipment that is paid for and off the books is a comforting feeling and Ånancially prudent in many ways in this turbulent economy. Conversely, losing production capacity or market share to competitors willing to invest in equipment able to run anywhere from 50-100 percent faster at lower energy rates with dramatically improved set-up times needs to be evaluated against internal capital preservations trends with regard to market share and proÅtability. Any products or improvements able to address any or all of these issues should be carefully explored. MCDONALD: The biggest concern will

continue to be the economy, as well as erosion of consumer’s disposal income, as necessities, fuel, food and health care cost continue to increase. FP: What was the biggest surprise or

the most unexpected affect on business in 2011? Do you see that happening in 2012? MCDONALD: The number of new

printing, converting and peripheral equipment purchases, as well as new company start-ups and existing company expansions were surprising and a testament to the health of the Æexible packaging industry. Current activities and outlook point to this trend continuing in 2012. STANSBURY: One nice surprise was the amount of manufacturing "trials" that occurred last year. Rather than just pulling back, reducing inventories, many converters looked forward and fostered new business developments. I do expect this proactive effort to continue through 2012. Aggressive sales efforts will be even more so, as companies look once again to beef up its forces. FP

FLEXIBLE PACKAGING GROWING Demand for converted flexible packaging is projected to increase. emand for converted flexible packaging is projected to increase 3.8 percent annually to $18.2 billion in 2015, according to a recent study conducted by The Freedonia Group. The demand for flexible packaging is expected to continually grow. Gains will be similar to the pace of the 2005-2010 period based on the now more well-established presence of pouches in a number of food and nonfood markets, coupled with overall deceleration in raw material price growth. Volume increases, however, will accelerate from the previous fiveyear performance as a result of real growth in consumer nondurables as the U.S. economy rebounds from the 2007-2009 recession. In addition, gains will be supported by cost, performance and source reduction advantages over most rigid packaging formats. Converted flexible packaging’s source reduction capabilities will be increasingly advantageous in light of initiatives by major retailers and packaged goods firms to evaluate their packaging in terms of eco-friendliness and cost reduction.

Bags and Pouches Outlook Pouches will experience aboveaverage advances, with demand expected to increase 4.6 percent yearly to $8 billion in 2015. Growth will be driven by continued conversions to stand-up pouches and healthy gains for flat pouches in a number of markets, along with a smaller environmental footprint due to light weight and reduced material use, which also holds down shipping costs. However, growing efforts by packaged goods firms to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability will lead to some degree of renewed interest in paper, which possesses such qualities as renewability, recyclability and compostability. While overall gains for other converted flexible packaging (primarily wrap products) will lag the market average, aboveaverage prospects are anticipated for pharmaceutical strip packs and specialized film packaging with meat products.


Nonetheless, advances will be driven by rising demand for convenience-oriented and other further processed food items, which often use more costly higher barrier packaging materials for extended shelf life. Demand will also benefit from demographic trends such as increased numbers of single-person and empty nest households and households where all adults work. These trends will boost demand for food in smaller package sizes and more convenient foods designed to reduce food preparation time. Trends toward healthier eating and increased “on-the-run” eating will


spur food manufacturers to expand their offerings of products, especially snacks, baked goods and beverages, in single-serving packages. Such products require more packaging than standard packages of similar items. Meat and related products, baked goods, snack food, grain mill products and produce were the largest food markets for converted flexible packaging in 2010, accounting for a combined 60 percent of food packaging demand. Through 2015, the fastest advances are anticipated in beverage, meat and related products, and snack food applications. Advances in beverage uses will be fueled by expanding applications

and greater competitiveness with rigid containers due to improved dispensing and reclosing features. In meat and related products applications, prospects will benefit from growing demand for convenience-type products that require value-added packaging materials (e.g., pouches and bags employing barrier films) for longer shelf life and protection from puncturing during shipping and handling. Opportunities in the snack food market will be driven by heightened demand for single-portion items and the popularity of snack foods that are positioned as healthier alternatives to traditional salted snacks.

MEETING NEW MARKET DEMANDS WITH DIGITAL LABEL PRODUCTION Robinson Tape and Label Inc. of Branford, Conn., tackles short-runs and specialty labels with the installation of a digital label system. he global label industry is poised for change. While the dominant print technology is still Æexography, digital systems continue to gain ground as shrinking run lengths and lead times, and the increased use of specialty and private labels, coincide with advances in digital printing equipment, software and substrates. One label printer who successfully took the digital leap is Robinson Tape and Label Inc., a $5 million company. The award-winning label manufacturer, packaging and shipping supply distributor installed Allen Datagraph Systems, Inc.’s iTech Axxis Digital Label System – the iTech Axxis Digital Label Printer and iTech Axxis Digital Label Finisher – in September 2011. The

system sits at the center of Labelwirks, the company’s new digital label manufacturing department, part of the company’s 15,000 square-foot manufacturing facility with several Mark Andy Æexo presses. Robinson’s equipment and technology allows them to create and manufacture labels in any size, shape, material or color. Most of its 20 employees are proud “lifers,” including Edward Pepe, who joined Robinson Tape and Label six months after it opened in 1970.

Digital Printing Beckons While Pepe is cautious that new technology Åts customer requirements, he pays careful attention to what is happening in the market. Recently Pepe saw the need for digital printing. “The marketplace is changing,” acknowledges Pepe. “Delivery times are shorter and more customers want specialty labels.” Pepe considered several digital systems. “My philosophy is ‘let’s forget

dollars and cents and see what it means to our company and customer base.’ Then we make our decision. The iTech Axxis Digital Label System did everything I asked of it and, most important, took care of my clients’ needs. We are so skilled at doing short run work, I could have continued doing it without a digital label system had I not found a good one.”

On-Demand Label Printing and Finishing The tabletop digital label printer consists of a high-resolution roll-fed CMYK Epson inkjet print engine featuring variable-droplet technology, and can output variable data. It prints on a variety of substrates in widths from 4 to 8.5 inches with an outside roll diameter up to 11 inches. The iTech Axxis Digital Label Finisher laminates, digitally die cuts in any shape using knife technology labels in any shape from any Adobe Illustrator vector Åle, strips, slits and rewinds to Ånished rolls. “We can manufacture small runs of specialty labels rather than making a rotary die and plates and going to press,” says Pepe. For one customer, a new label design required very small cut circles so wires could Åt through. “We asked to see what the notch should look like,” says Pepe. “The next day I delivered samples – the customer was thrilled. We tested the notch without spending money on tooling.” Robinson Tape and Label installed a tabletop digital label system, which prints on a variety of substrates in widths from 4 to 8.5 inches with an outside roll diameter up to 11 inches.

Printing: Digital The large job ran on a Æexo press. “This new system let us immediately deliver a prototype, so when the customer did buy the Ånal tooling, we knew it would work,” says Pepe.

Flexibility is Key The system’s Æexibility and color control are also critical. The system

isn’t heat-based, so it can run nearly any substrate – polypropylenes, vinyls and polyesters – without melting. “The Wasatch SoftRIP lets us tweak the color,” says Pepe. “We ran some work for people who had digital labels printed elsewhere. The background was one color, but when we ran it, ours looked different – ours delivered what the designer intended. We can make adjustments in the RIP, print one label, and look at the result.” The new system helps Robinson Ånd the best solution for its customers. “We can run 10 to 5,000 pieces; anything beyond that we put on a larger press,” says Pepe. “But sometimes we’ll print a long run and the customer needs 500 or 1,000 more. “The system includes software – the Wasatch SoftRIP – that lets us make adjustments and tweak the color,” says Pepe.

The quality is as good as Æexography, and we can easily cut the labels. The Ånished rolls can be delivered to the label applicator for manufacturing, ready to go.” One of Robinson’s Årst jobs demonstrates the signiÅcance of the new digital system. “We had to create 4x4 pieces with many 90 degree angles – like puzzle pieces – with very sharp edges,” recalls Pepe. “They were applied to a toy. The labels had heavy coverage of blue and reverses. A die would have cost quite a lot, and to strip it was going to be a nightmare. The customer needed it quickly. The new digital system made it affordable to produce it. The customer was ecstatic.” Pepe adds, “This happened right after we installed the system. I knew then that the iTech Axxis was going to be a great asset for us. We’ve only had it a few months, but it’s been a lifesaver many times already.” FP

THE ART OF ROLL PROTECTION The right roll packaging can keep you from losing time and money…maybe even customer loyalty. By Tom Duffy, Contributing writer oll goods have changed a lot over the years. New materials are brought to the market every day. Converting machinery, driven by economy of scale, now runs larger and larger rolls. Consequently, more expensive materials and larger rolls are now the norm. Trends in roll protection have changed accordingly. Stronger components have evolved to keep pace with heavier rolls. Yet, one basic tenet remains unchanged. Whether the rolls are large or small, lightweight or heavy, any roll product can quickly become worthless if the core or material is damaged.

Worthless Rolls Without protection, roll products can be damaged several ways. Wound Ålm creates signiÅcant tensions around the core. This can result in a progressive deformation of the core even when the roll simply sits in storage. The weight of larger rolls can also crush or deform a core. Most roll damage occurs during transit. A bouncing ride can put excessive stress on cores and core plugs. Poor handling by forklift operators can result in physical damage to the roll and certainly the core. Rolls shipped on their sides can arrive with Æat spots creating an out-of-round roll and often damaged product.

Out-of-round rolls cannot run at optimum speeds without violently shaking the unwind. Rolls with crushed or deformed cores often cannot accept shafts for further processing. Once core damage occurs, one of the few solutions is to reshape the core. There are a variety of vendors that can help once the damage is done. The key is to prevent the damage in the Årst place.


Suspend vs. Plug Rolls of all sizes can be suspended end-to-end through a variety of protection solutions. When suspended, the weight of the roll is kept from deforming the roll or compressing the wound material. It also sits safely away from contaminations that can damage the material. Today, small-to-medium rolls are commonly suspended with plastic pad plugs. Medium-to-large rolls are often better suspended with sleeve plugs Åt through wooden end boards. The proper conÅguration and strength of these components are typically dictated by roll size and weight. Heavy-duty systems for packaging single and multiple rolls can save labor time, shipping cost, and ultimately eliminate damage. End board systems can be stacked using special h-channels that interlock the boards. Smaller slit rolls can also be packaged in bulk for proper protection. Double and single core plugs interlock rolls in a stack. Divider sheets between each layer help interlock the stacks. Stretch wrapping or box covers easily complete this package for shipment. This product packaging is also suitable for robotic assembly. Here again, the right roll protection product can save labor, time and material. Core plugs come in a variety of shapes and sizes in metal, plastic and wood. The challenge for any converter is identifying the right make and model for their application. While core plugs can cost just pennies a piece, the wrong plug can quickly cost the producer in damaged product, lost time, and money wasted on the wrong plug in the Årst place.

Recycling Packaging Components Many companies are recycling packaging components. Badger Plug Company initiated a green program in 1985 to recycle quality used packaging components. An ever growing number of companies are realizing the beneÅts of recycling packaging components. The success of this program relies greatly upon adequate inspection to eliminate any damaged components. Once inspected and/or refurbished, recycled JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2012

components can be resold at signiÅcantly less cost than new product. Along similar lines, many molded plastic plugs are made at a reduced cost from recycled plastic. Plugs made from virgin plastic are used for speciÅc applications. Not surprising, increasing oil prices drive up plastic raw materials costs, making regrind products even more popular.

Quality Matters Within the roll protection industry, it is surprising just how little, if any, quality control procedures are used. Some manufactures discharge mass-produced products into bins that simply get closed and shipped out the door without inspection, without lot or machine/ operator identiÅcation – essentially without quality assurance measures of any kind. While some may consider core plugs a commodity, various quality parameters should be monitored and managed during manufacturing as with any other product. This way, if product issues arise, they can be tracked back to the source/cause and

corrective action taken. Quality issues can result in components that Åt too loose or too tight, that warp, crack or bust apart under pressure, or simply fail to hold, suspend and protect the roll as intended. Ask your supplier about the QC procedures and strength testing performed at their operation. A supplier with a clear and exact QC process is better equipped to provide the best recommendation for the ideal roll protection product. There is a basic rule of thumb: The more valuable the roll, the more important roll protection becomes. The price of the roll however, does not necessarily dictate the cost of the roll protection solution. To get the right roll protection for the right application, don’t guess. PROCESS IMPROVEMENT FOR THE NARROW WEB PRINTER By Joe Prunier, Contributing writer hanges in Æexographic printing are happening faster than ever. Press speeds are getting faster and faster, and new plate and sleeve technologies facilitate vastly improved print quality. Additionally, the market is increasingly demanding shorter print runs to reduce working capital and allow for more rapid changes in label and packaging graphics, as well as short-term promotions. One simple way to maximize quality and efÅciency is to evaluate the plate mounting tapes used in the printing process, and to ensure that the right tapes are being used for the application. Two key criteria are essential for evaluating plate mounting tapes: adhesives and foams.

Plate Mounting Tape Adhesives Without a doubt, one of the most important components of plate mounting tapes for narrow web is the adhesive. The efÅciency and process repeatability of mounting and demounting Æexographic printing plates can make the difference between being proÅtable by prolonging the useful life of plates, or ruining plates and having to buy new ones. The adhesive can be the distinguishing factor between having to clean adhesive and foam residue off every cylinder when the job is stripped, or having the tape remove cleanly with little to no required cleaning. The adhesive requirements are simple: bond to the sleeves/cylinders and plates as securely as possible during printing to completely eliminate any possibility of plate edge lifting or bubbling; and when the job is done, remove as easily as a siliconized liner. This ideal, however, has been difÅcult for many narrow-web printers to realize. On a daily basis, most narrow-web printers contend with printing plate edge lifting because of the use of thicker plates on narrow diameter cylinders, or damaged printing plates because the

adhesion to the plate is so high they either stretch or tear during demounting. To overcome edge lifting, printers have used primers, magic markers, edge sealers and tapes. Additionally, many printers have used adhesion blockers (such as talc, chalk, soap or shellac) to make removal easy enough so as not to destroy the plates. All of these techniques, however, make it extremely difÅcult to create a standard operating procedure (SOP) that is efÅcient and repeatable. When process replication and repeatability is unachievable, process efÅciency is impossible. To achieve repeatability and efÅciency, the printer must choose a proper plate mounting tape speciÅcally engineered with today’s printing technologies and processes in mind. When selecting a plate mounting tape, be sure to select one that has a plateside adhesive that is made for the plate material and thickness being used. If an incorrect tape is selected, prevalent edge lifting can occur with thicker plates, or torn or stretched plates with thin plates. Additionally, be sure to choose an adhesive that is designed to bond to the cylinder or sleeves material being used. Using the wrong “open-side” adhesive can mean either bubbling or labor-intensive clean up.

Plate Mounting Tape Foams While tape manufacturers are able to help narrow-web printers maximize


their process efÅciencies with adhesives speciÅcally engineered for the narrow web plate mounting and demounting processes, equally important is foam backing of the tapes. High print quality is directly associated with the quality of the foam used in plate mounting tapes, which serve as plate cushioning or support mediums. Industry suppliers strive to engineer the most technologically advanced press, plate and ink formulations to promote the highest print quality from today’s plate technology. Using the wrong foam hardness can, however, have a disastrous effect on print quality; as an example, using a soft foam to print a solid area will not allow for sufÅcient ink density transfer, and pin holing will occur. Conversely, using a hard foam to print a screen or process area will lead to a number of print defects such as dot gain, slurring, or haloing to name a few. A thorough understanding of foam hardness levels and how they affect print quality is essential for producing highquality products every time. In trying to ensure the proper use of plate mounting tapes, the most important factor is good communication with your plate mounting tape manufacturer. We are seeing impressive gains in output while improving bubble stability, reducing gauge variation while reducing trim scrap. The quantity of throughput increase is dependant upon application, process and materials, however virtually all blown Ålm applications beneÅt from the new cooling 38

At the recent K Show in Dusseldorf Germany, Hosokawa Alpine introduced a third alternative with our “5 is the new 3” exhibition. We made the case that producing traditional three layer Ålms with Åve layer X-Die extrusion technology can improve Ålm performance, reduce resin costs, and most importantly increase proÅtability. Taking advantage of the many grades of Ålm resin that may be used to enhance physical and optical properties, and with options to utilize lower cost resins and substitutes without compromising Ålm performance are a few ways to use that advantage. 9 layer projects, from a percentage of the market place they still lag behind 3 layer and non barrier 5 layer lines so I would say PE whether it be LD, LLD, HD or m-LLD PE is still the most versatile material on them market today. Nigro: There isn’t just one magic resin.

The trick is in the recipe from various materials and blends. In the U.S., LLDPE and m-LLDPE OleÅns are the predominant base resins. However, there are so many different applications which require other OleÅns and/or engineered resins for performance, which need a focused effort by the producers. Sealant layers for instance can utilize EVA, POP, Ionomers, m-LLDPE, or other materials. Then for other physical properties such as strength, clarity, extensibility, or barrier, the processor must select other compatible resins or blends, all the while making sure that the entire structure is processable.

With competition for better performing Ålms and the challenges of productivity and proÅtability, processors need extreme capabilities in some cases. Also in line with the Æexibility needs: Internal Bubble Cooling, Ultrasonic Bubble Control, and Automatic Gauge Control in conjunction with web handling must work in concert to assure superior Ånished roll conformity and quality. This ultimate control not only guarantees low scrap totals but allows post processing (printing, laminating, Ålling) at the very highest line speeds. Nunes: Extrusion equipment suppliers like

Alpine have solved countless problems in recent years, including reducing gauge variation; increasing cooling and extrusion rates; running more resin and products types on the same extruder and die; faster purging and job-changes with less scrap; ability to run with minimum or no trim. One speciÅc recent problem that Hosokawa Alpine has addressed is in machine direction orientation (MDO) of blown Ålm. MDO causes Ålm to “neckin” and results in an excess of Ålm trim due to the thicker edges and limited Ånished roll diameters. Another area that Ålm producers constantly demand improvement is to reduce the time and scrap of job changes. As process rates increase, manufacturers Åll jobs faster and need to change more often.

produce these Ålms, the need for operator training is extremely important for today’s processors. Some companies expect their operators to deal with a myriad of issues, including mechanical, electrical, operational, and process. In some cases, new operators are hired without any extrusion background whatsoever. The extrusion lines manufactured today with all their technologies and Æexibilities can be very complex. When you also consider the thousands of raw materials and additives available for performance and differentiation, it can challenge even the most experienced worker. Good training is a necessity for operators to understand the functions of the machines in order to troubleshoot the process which could save many thousands of dollars per year in the form of scrap and downtime. DeSpain: More standardization in the

industry whether it is on the equipment side, such as the SAE in the automotive industry so OEM’s and ancillary equipment, can work together better or as an industry as a whole from the processors, machinery builders and chemical companies to better address the environmental issues our industry faces today. What kinds of trends/technologies is the slitting/rewinding sector seeing?

A:

Customers today are considering the advantages that a quality slitter/rewinder can bring to them. Gone are the days when the slitter was that last capital investment in a project with the ‘leftover’ cash after purchasing the printing press and laminator. Companies investing in today’s high speed printing and laminating understand the potential bottleneck that the sluggish downtime of the slitter/rewinder can cause. And, so are now looking for more automation to reduce the set up or changeover time from one job to another. With the demands for more targeted marking and special promotions (particularly for food packaging), run and rewind lengths are shorter, which puts more pressure on reducing the changeover time of the slitting and rewinding process. Certainly for these industries, the trend is to install slitter/rewinders, whereby the slit reels are rewound on one shaft while the second shaft is being set up or Ånished reels removed.

Q:

What are your customers requesting in terms of products or service?

A:

Customers need to have greater Æexibility in the slitting department, placing demands on the slitter to handle a wide range of materials from very thin Ålms (getting thinner every year) to thick laminates, while keeping the set up time to a minimum. Traditional dual turret (four rewind shafts) slitter/rewinders have been limited to a rewind diameter of around 24 inches forcing many converters to purchase duplex shaft slitters (two rewind shafts) to cope with diameters up to 31.5 inches. This also has constrained the Æexibility of production Æow through the slitting department. Titan has addressed this issue and designed the latest SR9-DT Dual Turret rewinder to be able to rewind up to 33.5 inches in diameter on both turrets, which removes these production constraints.

is the use of the slitter for ‘editing’ (removing) waste material from the Ånished roll. Print or lamination faults can now be detected and electronically mapped on the printing press or laminator. This information can be used (electronically – no Æags) to either edit on full width doctoring processes before reaching the slitting department, thereby eliminating the need to edit at all on the slitter – or used to control the slitter rewinder, stopping quickly and accurately so that the slitter operator can quickly edit and re-start.

Atlas offered live demonstrations of the SR9-DT Series dual turret slitter/rewinder at ICE Europe in November 2011, running at speeds of up to 2,950 ft/min.

What’s new and exciting at the company?

A:

Launching the Årst model from the new Titan SR9 multi-machine platform was one of the most important challenges we faced during 2011. The ICE Europe exhibition in Munich, Germany in November was perfectly timed to introduce the new SR9 Series slitter with live demonstrations of the dual turret (DT) rewinder, which performed faultlessly during the 3 day event, running at speeds of up to 2,950 ft/min. More new Titan SR9 models will also be launched during 2012. This year will see yet another drupa exhibition in Düsseldorf, Germany in May and we will have a strong presence at this very important global event with live slitter/rewinder demonstrations daily during the exhibition. We have already made a signiÅcant investment in a new 3D CAD engineering design system and towards the end of last year we acquired a new ‘cloud-based’ CRM system to better serve our customer base.
