Quotes from the book "“It is real, it is here, and there is not a lot we can do about it other than trying to save energy, make more efficient use of it, and try to convince India and China to cap their energy consumption. Build more nuclear reactors, but that is politically not opportune.” Axel Kloth, CTO, Parimics
“Global warming is real and with the expansion of industry in China and the rest of Asia we will really push the healthy limits of the world in the next five years.” Dennis, Former CEO, Okidata Corporation
“This is a real danger – there is no body of hard scientific fact to contradict the concerns coming from the climate scientists. Can we afford to ignore and risk the planet for future generations?” Rohit Talwar, CEO, Fast Future
By taking action against global warming, we have the opportunity to win on many, many fronts. Reducing the use of oil can limit the impact of Middle East politics on our society and economy. New technologies can spur growth in well-paying jobs, and the environmental impacts of extraction that are not atmosphere-related will be lessened. Matthew Roche, CEO, Offermatica
"It does not matter if global warming is real or not. The change is that a significant number of governments in the world perceive that it is real and they are proceeding with changes in regulations and economic policies to protect themselves from the environmental damage from anticipated global warming and to create economic advantages for their industries through new technologies and influencing consumers to change their behaviors to reduce future warming." Brock Hinzmann, Technology Navigator, SRI Consulting Business Intelligence
Dedication This book is dedicated to all those who recognize the dire problem we face and the need to contribute a solution for our future generations.

Introduction:
What are your thoughts on Global Warming? Is it real? What should we do about it? Mitchell Levy has the privilege and pleasure of talking annually to thousands of business executives who share their views and predictions on future events. This year, we begin a new tradition of making annual predictions on the hottest topic (pun intended) these days – 'global warming' which is storming to the forefront of the world's headlines. As you plan for the coming year's activities and as you take into consideration all possible inputs towards carving a sustainable business or undertaking, we believe that these collated answers to our questions will give you the right perspective towards becoming a truly global citizen. The methodology used to gather quotes for this book was straightforward. We polled 1,500 executives on their view of the economy for the following year, and based on those responses, we compiled a book. This year's book is called "Happy About Knowing What to Expect in 2008" (http://Happy About.info/economy.php). Over the years, Mitchell has often been 85% accurate on his predictions.
This year, we asked two other questions which helped produce both this book and a third one on the U.S. Presidential election titled "Are We Ready for a Female or African-American President?" (http://HappyAbout.info/2008Presidential.php) For this book, the following questions were asked: What are your thoughts on Global Warming? Is it real? What should we do about it? The results are intriguing. We've grouped the data into six categories and presented the quotes as follows: 1.No Hope 2.Strong Case 3.Yes, but ... 4.No, but ... 5.Call to Action 6.Suggestions/Predictions We hope you enjoy reading these quotes as much as we did and they help you get a feeling for the executive view on this key question regarding the long-term survival of the planet.

No Hope
What are your thoughts on Global Warming? Is it real? What should we do about it?
Axel Kloth, CTO, Parimics
"It is real, it is here, and there is not a lot we can do about it other than trying to save energy, make more efficient use of it, and try to convince India and China to cap their energy consumption. Build more nuclear reactors, but that is politically not opportune."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
3
Dennis, Former CEO, Okidata Corporation
4
"Global warming is real and with the expansion of industry in China and the rest of Asia we will really push the healthy limits of the world in the next five years."
Chapter 1: No Hope
Rob Ingersoll, Contributor to 'Foolosophy' (Publisher: Happy About)
"Alternate fuel vehicles will be seen popping up all over the country but big oil companies will try to squash the competition since they still have more then enough oil to keep people going for the next hundred years."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
5
Anyck Turgeon, Chief of Market Strategy & Security, Crossroads Systems
6
"Global warming is indeed taking place, yet I do not believe that companies are truly ready to implement extremely costly and impractical Green IT solutions. As such, unless laws are implemented and major social changes take place, global warming will keep on taking place at an astronomical rate. Moving inland might be a necessary option in the future for many people living in beach communities, but few will do so, as the pleasure of the beaches is quite intoxicating."
Chapter 1: No Hope
Phillip Howells, Self-Employed
"Can we do anything? Probably not enough. All the best efforts of those desperately wishing for us to change while we still can, will almost certainly be beaten by the vested interests. I am not a pessimist, but I do think humans do not yet realize that it is not the planet that needs saving—it will be here for billions of years yet—[it is] the environment on the planet that makes it conducive for humans and the species we depend on for our survival, to survive."

Strong Case
What are your thoughts on Global Warming? Is it real? What should we do about it?
Brad Peppard, Partner, MarketingBank
"Green is the color of the future, and there's a lot of money to be made. Remember when it was argued that pollution control was going to cost jobs? We went ahead anyway and ... it turned out that it created jobs. This is the same thing all over again. Going green is going to generate a lot of green. There's a lot of profit that the US is going to see if we become the leader. Green buildings, for example, save more that they cost to make, in the long term -- and that is at current energy costs. None of this is to say that we have the political will to force this. I'm only saying that if we were more strategic, moving aggressively in this direction is not only good for the planet, for our grandchildren, but it's good for business!"
Global Warming Executive Predictions
9
Catherine Kitcho, The Launch Doctor, Author, 'Happy About Being a Baby Boomer' (Publisher: Happy About)
10
"Global warming is the biggest issue facing this planet in this decade. It is definitely real. When I was a program manager at NASA Headquarters in Washington DC, I was in the division studying earth sciences, including climate change. Back in the 1980s, scientists in my division were already finding evidence of global warming based on satellite imagery. I've been convinced for years this is going on, but the recent increased pace of warming is frightening. We as individuals, communities, states, and countries must come together to find ways to collectively reduce our carbon footprint...even if we just do something small each day, it will help the planet. To accomplish this, world governments must make it a priority, and everyone needs to be educated on what we can do to help. Al Gore has done an outstanding job starting the education process worldwide; now we must carry that effort forward."
Chapter 2: Strong Case
Phillip Howells, Self-Employed
"Of course it is real, and only fools or people with vested interest preventing them seeing, or wanting to see beyond their usually selfish (or could be fearful) reasons, could possibly think any different. The evidence is overwhelming and even if it were not, how can we possibly take the risk, given the implications."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
11
George L. Roman, Senior Enterprise Consultant, Rockville, MD
12
"The effects of anthropogenic environmental changes have been well documented for several generations. From the extinction of the Dodo bird to the CO2 poisoning of the oceans, we're having a profound effect on this planet."
Chapter 2: Strong Case
Rohit Talwar, CEO, Fast Future
"This is a real danger – there is no body of hard scientific fact to contradict the concerns coming from the climate scientists. Can we afford to ignore and risk the planet for future generations?"
Global Warming Executive Predictions
13
Mahmood A. Khan, Hewlett Packard Services, Business Strategy and Implementation Application Outsourcing and EAS Practice Principal
14
"This is the biggest challenge of our time. The U.S. will lead the way in the next few years and may even be the leader in creating pioneering new renewable industries which will be instrumentalin reversing the global warming."
Chapter 2: Strong Case
Ian Browde, Global Village Idiot and Social Technologist
"Significant innovations in alternative energy. Hence transportation and land use will start to emerge as the majority of global society recognize that global warming is a more complex issue than 'the planet is getting warmer'. These innovations will help humanity recognize that our global system of transportation, energy use, and land development (including food and agriculture) are integrated and each affects the other."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
15
Ralph Marx, CEO, Advocate Systems, Inc
16
"The concept that we do have alternatives to oil will finally take hold. This will open doors for solutions that have not even been conceived yet. This shift from the question 'Is it viable' to 'This is doable, now lets look at what really is viable', will spur a huge invention cycle and a wave of entrepreneurial ventures."
Chapter 2: Strong Case
Matthew Roche, CEO, Offermatica
"It seems more likely to be real than not, and the downside risk of inaction is potentially so profound that the upside to inaction pales in comparison. Finally, there is really no strong argument for not acting on global warming, even if it turns out to be less scary than anticipated.”

Yes, but ...
What are your thoughts on Global Warming? Is it real? What should we do about it?
Mark Moore, CEO, Omni Agri Resources LLC
"Global warming is real, however what's causing it is not 100% certain yet. Still, we need to continue our efforts to lower emissions significantly and to become independent from fossil fuels."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
19
Michael Drapkin, CEO, Drapkin Technology Corp
20
"I believe that global warming is real and should be addressed, but it is difficult to gauge to what extent is the actual effect versus normal fluctuations in climate. This needs further study."
Chapter 3: Yes, but ...
Mike Heintz, President, University Electric
"My thoughts on global warming are mixed. A comedian once said, 'Who stuck a thermometer up the earths butt 100 years ago to measure its temperature?'. There could be many causes for this trend, this planet has gone through many ice ages, the last one was when the Pilgrims arrived. With all the sophisticated equipment we have, we are able to measure very precise changes but the data has not been collected long enough to make a definite statement. The alarm was a good thing. Auto companies are making more fuel-efficient cars, airplane engine manufacturers are making more fuel efficient planes with less emissions as well. If we do our job, we can reduce energy by 50% in the next 10 years. Other countries are also doing their part but what about the under developed countries clearing forests and will China do its part as their economy grows? Personally I do not believe that this is a long term effect, but our actions to reduce greenhouse gasses are definitely on the right track."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
21
Anyck Turgeon, Chief of Market Strategy & Security, Crossroads Systems
22
"Concerns about global warming will slow down as the economy embarks into a strong recession."
Chapter 3: Yes, but ...
Michael Britti, CEO, TU Rental Screening Solutions
"The question is too simplistic. The earth is warming, or at least has been, but it is not clear to me that humans have had any perceptible influence. So yes, there has been global warming. We should do nothing to try to stop it that isn't sensible for other reasons. Switching our economy away from over-dependence on imported fossil fuels is very sensible thing to do for lots of reasons, not because of global warming."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
23
Miguel Terrizzano, CEO, Pierpont.com
24
"Global warming is real. Is as close to eminent doom as some may want us to think? Don't know. I am not a scientist nor am I educated sufficiently well on the matter to make any kind of prediction. I have however had the chance to engage scientists that are experts who all have said that while true, it may take quite a bit longer than what has been so readily expressed in the media in terms of catastrophic outcomes."
Chapter 3: Yes, but ...
Peter Ostrow, President and CEO, Technical Communities, Inc.
"Global warming is a real concern that is going to take coordinated worldwide consensus and action to alleviate. However, the world will need to see significant economic and environmental damage resulting from global warming before the global powers will act as one. It will take until 2025 before there is enough evidence to force global action."

No, but ...
What are your thoughts on Global Warming? Is it real? What should we do about it?
Jon William Toigo, CEO, Toigo Partners International
"There has been a two degree change in temp in 20M years. That doesn't scare me. However, the cost of electricity in the U.S. has accelerated by nearly 25% in the past two years, while the availability of power has become severely constrained in the Northeast and in Southern and Northern California thanks to a failure of power companies to invest in the distribution grid with the same alacrity that they have in power generation. Whatever we can do to clean up Mother Earth will benefit our children: a good thing."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
27
Brock Hinzmann, Technology Navigator, SRI Consulting Business Intelligence
28
"It does not matter if global warming is real or not. The change is that a significant number of governments in the world perceive that it is real and they are proceeding with changes in regulations and economic policies to protect themselves from the environmental damage from anticipated global warming and to create economic advantages for their industries through new technologies and influencing consumers to change their behaviors to reduce future warming."
Chapter 4: No, but ...
Lee Slaughter, Director, LWS Communications Limited
"Complete and absolute rubbish, bad science, bad politics, flawed thinking – vested interest, and a damned good excuse to sideline and cover up other major / important issues in the news. If we have global warming it is not man-made, it is a result of solar activity. To characterize this, the gaseous ice caps on Mars have melted at the same rate as the ice caps on earth for the last 35 years, and they don't have congestion or too much packaging….. as measured by NASA. So if we do have global warming – it's a bit of a bigger problem than a man made one…… This is 21st Century tax, and panic inspired by Governments that have a vested interest. What should we do is ignore it in tax terms, but take advantage at an economic level, by developing technology and supporting businesses that have products and services which help with efficiency and anti-pollution, energy saving etc."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
29
Bobby Jadhav, CTO, Siterra
30
"Not sure it's real or not. Does it really matter? We still have commitment to environment and our next generation. So, no harm in doing the right things."
Chapter 4: No, but ...
Frank Slootman, President & CEO, Data Domain, Inc.
"It is real but the causes are not definitively determined to be human induced emissions. Still, human population growth on the planet cannot go on unbridled as it has without environmental consequences."
Global Warming Executive Predictions

Bryan D. Stolle, Partner | MDV Mohr, Davidow Ventures

"An objective analysis of the valid science is far from conclusive on either global warming or man's impact on the same (one could argue it is arrogant to believe we can have that effect on a complex global system whose behavior we can't predict tomorrow, much less 50 years from now). The earth has put out far more carbon dioxide on its own (both before and during man's tenure on earth), than man has caused. That said, it is always smart business to be as efficient with resources as possible. If we can find cheaper renewable forms of energy, that is good. If we can create products with cheaper or lesser amounts of raw materials, that is good. Environmentalists and industrialists have far more goals in common than they often let themselves see, because other agendas are at play."
Chapter 4: No, but ...
Jim Sterne, Chairman, http://www.We bAnalyticsAss ociation.org
"Leave the planet. Yes it's real and I am not optimistic about the outcome. People will have to start dying... correction... rich people will have to start dying in droves before anything large enough and sufficient enough will be attempted. That may well be too late."

"When you look at the magnitude of the universe and bring it down to a smaller size, our planet has been going through change before man took its first step on earth. Our planet is constantly going through change that man has no control of and it is controlled by something greater than man. Whether it is global warming or the beginning of the ice age our contribution is smaller than what is being published and suggested by those who are currently suggesting that we are in global warming and blaming it on man. The earth has many active volcanoes that could erupt at any moment; did man create the volcanoes and do volcanoes affect our atmosphere and environment? We have earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, cyclones, droughts, unusual amounts of rain fall, and the world goes round and round. Yes, we are going through change but are we in a global warming? I am a speck on this planet and not GOD to say that we are or not."

Call to Action
What are your thoughts on Global Warming? Is it real? What should we do about it?
Kurt Doelling, Vice President Supply Management, Sun Microsystems, Inc.
"In 2008, more and more companies will recognize the importance of deploying a green and socially responsible supply chain. A key element in creating green supply chains is the availability and acceptance of consistent industry standards. We are at a tipping point, ready to make a major ecological shift in the way business is conducted globally; but for this shift to be truly sustainable, we must also emphasize how it can also be profitable. A green supply chain has the potential to not only impact a company's environmental record, but also its bottom line."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
35
Rohit Talwar, CEO, Fast Future
"We need to start with all of us doing practical things to reduce our carbon footprint and energy consumption, invest even more in alternative energy research, help emerging nations to deal with their footprint and look for radical new materials and production processes that will drastically reduce our footprint. At the same time we have to consider the possibility that we'll need to downshift our consumption quite dramatically. All industries, e.g. aviation, construction, manufacturing etc., should be forced to achieve carbon neutrality by 2010 – through reduction and offsetting."
36
Chapter 5: Call to Action
Sheridan Tatsuno, Principal, Dreamscape Global
"Global warming is serious and will accelerate due to rapid growth in China, India, and other developing nations. Externality pricing, whether through carbon trading, caps, or other innovative pricing policies, will be critical for encouraging industry and government to move quickly."

"Global warming is real, and the question is no longer about its validity, but, now, what are we going to do about it. The U.S. will renegotiate and sign a new Kyoto agreement within two years."
Chapter 5: Call to Action
Mark Rabkin, CEO, Closet Factory of Silicon Valley
"Global warming is real. We should honor the Kyoto Protocols. And make significant investments in renewable energy sources as a way of increasing geo-political security as well as protecting our economic interests."
Global Warming Executive Predictions

"Scary real. Aside from every single person doing their part, we should all band together to put pressure on multinationals."
Chapter 5: Call to Action
Peter Paul Roosen, Author, 'Overcoming Inventoritis: The Silent Killer of Innovation' (Publisher: Happy About)
"Carbon dioxide is now being widely viewed as pollution rather than plant food. It is both. But the CO2 that comes from burning fossil fuels comes in larger amounts than the planet can handle. It also comes with other surprises. There is more uranium and thorium waste produced in a coal-fired power plant than a nuclear plant of equivalent energy output uses as fuel. How's that for an argument in favor of nuclear energy? The costs of industrial production are going to increasingly include the environmental costs. The traditional producer was only concerned about getting unwanted stuff up the smokestack, out the drain pipe or into a dump. Now they are going to retain ownership and title to the waste progressively longer. As part of this, the long-resisted carbon taxes are starting to appear."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
41
Ross Sedgewick, Director, Global Product Marketing, Siemens Enterprise Communicatio ns
42
"Even more focus on mainstreaming of green technologies, energy sources, and alternatives to burning fossil fuel and/or creating CO2 emissions, which will start trickling down to most power/fuel consuming products in some way."
Chapter 5: Call to Action
Richard Simoni, Partner, Asset Management Company
"I believe it is real. I don't know what to do about it, but I believe investment in a wide variety of relevant technologies will be a significant component of the ultimate solution."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
43
Jean Paul Jacob, IBM Research Emeritus and Visiting Scholar at U.C. Berkeley
44
"Global warming is real, but so is our will to stop it. All we have to do is to continue to make public the risk of global warming. People will rally behind solutions that are coming out of corporations and universities."
Chapter 5: Call to Action
Anant L. Kulkarni, Managing Partner, I2M Pvt (India) Ltd
"If we can follow Mahatma Gandhi's quote, 'Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed' we can solve global warming."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
45
Barbara L. Harley, Author, 'International Business Incubation for Global Trade' (to be released Winter 2008)
46
"The question 'Is it real?' surprises me. Scientific opinion and research has indicated for well over ten years that there is a global warming problem and that WE must do many things to slow down and eventually reverse the impact. Lessening our carbon footprint must be the primary focus for our efforts."
Chapter 5: Call to Action
Dave Nielsen, Director, ISV & Developer Program, Strike Iron
"Yes it's real. Not sure if as bad as Al Gore makes it to be. But it could be worse. Propose and ratify a new/improved Kyoto Treaty."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
47
Deepika Bajaj, Founder and CEO, Invincibelle
48
"Global warming is for real. The car emissions, the oil spills, and increasing waste disposal are leading to breakdown in the natural eco-system. We need to become more prudent in preserving nature through technology, awareness, and political enforcements."
Chapter 5: Call to Action
Eddy Coenye, CEO, Nubiquity
"What more proof do we need? Sure it's real. Pressurize politicians to have an aggressive plan. Utilize the $600 billion per year of the defense budget."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
49
Phil Hood, Principal, Transcend Strategy Group
"Yes. Do we know the cause or all of the causes? Probably. Increased carbon dioxide caused by burning fossil fuels is the likely culprit but there could be cyclical factors we aren't aware of. We should reduce greenhouse gases through market initiatives. For the U.S. there would be great economic and security benefits to cutting energy usage in half or more and it is quite doable. From a larger perspective, all the sciences know that emulating nature is the most effective way to efficiently design products and take care of wastes. From a long-term efficiency standpoint, we need to radically reduce resource consumption, and the way to do this is by redesigning agricultural and industrial processes to closely follow biological models, rather than the brute force engineering model that has sustained us to this point."

"Change must be driven by incentives. There are many areas we could target for improvement, but the most profitable ones should come first: those leveraging renewable energy. As with any significant change, the biggest hurdles will come from the entrenched incumbents rather than the effort to advance technology."
Chapter 6: Suggestions / Predictions
Sam Gill, Co-Author, 'Climbing the Ladder of Business Intelligence' (Publisher: Happy About)
"Green is going to be at the top of the agenda for the next decade as governments and industry move to implement the Kyoto Protocol."
Global Warming Executive Predictions
57
Brock Hinzmann, Technology Navigator, SRI Consulting Business Intelligence
58
"In 2008, a very large number of alternative renewable energy technology companies will be breaking ground or starting up production in such areas as thin-film solar cells, wind power, algae-based bio-fuels. Increasingly, rather than being stand-alone energy sources, these projects will be integrated, systematic approaches that use a renewable source to generate power for immediate use to convert another pollutant into a renewable resource. Examples include wind or solar power to generate electricity to derive hydrogen from a dirty source, for use to power a fuel cell or hydrogen internal combustion engine is an example. Diverting carbon dioxide from a coal-fired power plant into the feed stream for algae farms to make bio-fuels or bio-chemicals that can be converted into fuel or plastics might be another. These are win-win projects that raise the otherwise questionable economic viability of some of the basic, one-trick energy projects."

"Providing renewable clean energy and water will become globally very important — starting in 2008."
Chapter 6: Suggestions / Predictions
Ralph Marx, CEO, Advocate Systems, Inc
"This issue has probably been politicized to the point where it has taken on an all or nothing nature. It would probably be much simpler for people to get past the right or wrong on this issue if we were dealing with degrees. Is the current level of melting of the polar ice caps more than it was 30 years ago? Yes. Is the number of devastating storms more or less than the norm of the first half of the 20th century? An obvious yes. Is the ozone layer thinner than we would like. Of course! By reframing the questions, we now have created a simple way to start the process of building consensus."

Chapter 6: Suggestions / Predictions
Conclusion 2007 was a turning point in the consciousness of the planet. It was a turning point where we no longer asked the question "Is global warming real?," but perceived global warming as reality. How important was Al Gore in the global awakening? Unlike the inappropriate remark he made regarding the Internet, We believe, (as does the Nobel Prize judging committee) that Al Gore was personally responsible for helping to raise awareness in the planet to this large planetary problem. Ok, so if we now believe (or most of us do) what can we do about it? Some answers are contained in this book. The real answers, however, will unfold over the next couple of years. We need to act, we need to change, we need to invest in protecting the future…
