Preface
The second edition of this popular industrial guide contains descriptions of more than 1100 currently avaiiable water-soluble resins, supplied by 47 manufacturers or distributors of these products. Both natural and synthetic resins are included. The book will be of value to technical and managerial personnel involved in the final products made with these resins, as well as the suppliers of basic raw materials. Types of water-soluble resins included in the book are cellulose ethers; collagens; gelatins; natural gums; and synthetic resins, their dispersions, emulsions, and solutions. The data in the book represent selections from manufacturers’ descriptions made at no cost to, nor influence from, the makers or distributors of these materials. Only the most recent information has been included. It is believed that all of the products listed are currently available, which will be of utmost interest to readers concerned with product discontinuances. The book lists the following own words, for each product:
information,
as available, in the manufacturer’s
(1)
Company name and product category;
(2)
Trade names and product numbers;
(3)
Product description-important
features, properties and applications.
Products are presented by company, and the companies are listed alphabetically. Also included in the book are a Trade Name Index and a Resin Index, for easy and rapid location of products by the reader. In addition, another section, which will be useful, contains Suppliers’ Addresses. It can be found immediately following the Product Information Section. V

NOTICE To the best of our knowledge the information in this publication is accurate; however, the Publisher does not assume any responsibility for the accuracy or completeness of, or consequences arising from, such information. This industrial guide does not purport to contain detailed user instructions, and by its range and scope could not possibly do so. Mention of trade names or commercial products does not constitute endorsement or recommendation for use by the Publisher. In some cases water-soluble resins could be potentially toxic, and therefore due caution should be exercised. Final determination of the suitability of any information or product for use contemplated by any user, and the manner of that use, is the sole responsibility of the user. We strongly recommend that users seek and adhere to a manufacturer’s or supplier’s current instructions for handling each material they use. The Author and Publisher have used their best efforts to include only the most recent data available. The reader is cautioned to consult the supplier in case of questions regarding current availability.

Resins:
POLYOX Water-Soluble Resins, CAS Registry No. 25322-68-3, are nonionic water-soluble poly(ethylene oxide) polymers supplied in a variety of viscosity grades. The degree of polymerization, n, varies from about 2,000 to about 180,000, depending on the viscosity grade of resin. Special Features: High Molecular Weight: The molecular weights of POLYOX Water-Soluble Resins range from about one hundred thousand to eight million and above. Completely Water Soluble: POLYOX Water-Soluble Resins, being polyethers, hydrogen bond with water and are completely soluble to just below the boiling point of water. Thickening Ability: POLYOX Water-Soluble Resins are extremely effective thickening agents in water. Friction Reduction: Very small (0.003 percent) concentrations of the higher molecular weight POLYOX Water-Soluble Resins can reduce the turbulent frictional drag of the water in which they are dissolved by as much as 80 percent. Lubricity: POLYOX Water-Soluble Resins impart a high degree of lubricity to water. Aesthetics: When solutions are applied to the skin, they produce a soft and "silky" feel. Nonionic: Being nonionic, POLYOX Water-Soluble Resins are more tolerant of salts than are polyelectrolytes. Form Novel Complexes: The strong hydrogen bonding affinity of POLYOX Water-Soluble Resins accounts for the association of these polyethers with various polar compounds. High Binding Efficiency: POLYOX Water-Soluble Resins have high binding efficiency for pigments, fillers, metal powders, and ceramics. Thermoplastic: As thermoplastics, POLYOX Water-Soluble Resins are readily calendered, extruded, molded, or cast. Soluble in Many Organic Solvents: POLYOX Water-Soluble Resins are readily soluble in and will thicken certain chlorinated solvents. Viscoelastic Behavior: The flexibility of ether linkages combined with the extremely high molecular weight of POLYOX Water-Soluble Resins produces elastic behavior in solution. Wet Tack: Solutions exhibit a high degree of wet tack. Flocculant Activity: Low Toxicity:

CO., INC.: RHODIGEL Xanthan Gum:
RHODIGEL is produced by a fermentation process using the natural plant organism Xanthomonas campestris. The resulting product is a water-soluble, anionic polysaccharide. Each repeating unit consists of a backbone of four B-D glucose units linked at the 1 and 4 positions. At the 3 position of alternating glucose units, are trisaccharide side chains consisting of an acetylated mannose unit, a glucuronic acid unit and either a mannose or pyruvic acid unit. The resulting stiff polymer chain may exist, in a solution, as a single, double or triple helix which interacts with other xanthan gum molecules to form complex, loosely bound networks held together by secondary valence forces. It is this network formation which produces many of the desirable benefits of using RHODIGEL Xanthan Gum. Grades and Typical Physical Properties: RHODIGEL Xanthan Gum is produced in two grades. RHODIGEL is the standard grade product and RHODIGEL 200 is a fine mesh, ground version of RHODIGEL. RHODIGEL: Appearance: Cream-White Powder Moisture Content, %: 12 max. pH (1.0 wt% Aqueous Solution): 6 to 8 Viscosity, ens: 1200-1600 Mesh Size; % thru 60 mesh: 100 % thru 80 mesh: 95 min. % thru 200 mesh: ---RHODIGEL 200: Appearance: Cream-White Powder Moisture Content, %: 12 max. pH (1.0 wt% Aqueous Solution): 6 to 8 Viscosity, cps: 1200-1600 Mesh Size: % thru 60 mesh: ---% thru 80 mesh: 100 % thru 200 mesh: 92 min. Performance Benefits: - High Efficiency Thickener - Dissolves Easily in Cold or Warm Water - Produces Highly-Pseudoplastic Solutions - Aqueous Solutions Have High Yield Values - Excellent Stabilizing Agent for Emulsions, Suspensions and Foams - Stable Viscosity Over a Broad PH Range - Little Viscosity Change With Temperature - Synergistic Rheological Performance with other Organic Gums and Inorganic-Suspending Agents - Compatible with Acids, Bases, Salts, and most Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Ingredients Note: RHODIGEL is a Tradename of Rhone-Poulenc,

R.T. VANDERBILT Gum:
CO., INC.: RAODOPOL Industrial Grade Xanthan
Xanthan gum is the versatile polysaccharide thickener and stabilizer produced by fermentation and extraction of the naturally occuring plant bacteria Xanthomonas campestris. The resulting stiff chain may exist as a single, double or triple helix, which interacts with other polymer molecules to build a complex loosely bound network held together by secondary valence forces. The xanthan gum is about 2 X 10 6 molecular weight with a narrow molecular weight distribution compared to most polysaccharides. Intermolecular association among polymer chains results in the formation of a complex network of entangled rod like molecules. These weakly bound aggregates are progressively disrupted under the influence of applied shear: this explains the pronounced pseudoplasticity of xanthan gum solutions. In addition, this highly ordered network of entangled stiff molecules accounts for the high yield value of xanthan gum, which translates - in practical terms - to the effective suspending properties exhibited by the gum. RHODOPOL is an anionic polymer which is soluble in water but insoluble in most organic solvents. It performs a number of unique functions in water solutions because of its original molecular structure. Typical Specifications: __ Physical state: Powder Moisture content: 12% max. Bulk density (g/ml): 0.8 Mesh size (through 50 mesh): 98% pH: 6-8 RHODOPOL meets the needs for a highly effective viscosifier stabilizer, and suspending agent Unique properties even at low concentration: - Effective suspending agent - Viscosifier with pseudoplastic behaviour (shear-thinning) - Exceptional stability of rheolosical properties over a broad pH and temperature range - - Soluble and stable in wide range of salt concentration - Ability to be gelled and cross-linked Note: RHODOPOL
is a tradename of RHONE POULENC, France.
