Preparedness, Communication Plans Vital for When Disaster Strikes Last month’s historic outbreak of tornados in the Midwest and in the South should sound a call for disaster preparedness. You need to have a contingency plan in place in case the worst happens, whether following a tornado, hurricane, earthquake, fire, flooding, landslide, wildfire, winter storm or an untimely death of a key employee, owner or business partner. Planning ahead is essential for any and all of these types of disasters.

am Allman’s Art of Retail Management column covers What-If (Worst-Case) Scenario Planning, beginning on page 12. He discusses some of these topics and the importance of being prepared. The key to dealing with any crisis or disaster scenario is having a plan. All flooring retailers, distributors and manufacturers should practice these drills while hoping never to implement the plan. Need help in preparing for disasters? When he was first told by a customer that he needed to include a ceramic job as part of an overall installation, Stafford quickly learned the essentials, contacted key suppliers and found out how profitable ceramic tile can be to the bottom line when done correctly. Focus on Resilient columnist Ray Thompson, Jr. answers some questions from the mailbag about installing resilient flooring over concrete slabs, beginning on page 20. If you have read my column over the years, you know that I’m a pretty positive and optimistic person. A positive person commented, “I believe in being aware of problems, but I recognize, that in most cases, there will be solutions. I know there will always be difficulties, but I believe that most can be overcome. I believe in being aware of the negatives, but I choose to accentuate the positives. I may be exposed to the worst, but I expect the best. I may have a reason to complain, but I am choosing to smile.”
Y
es, I do believe in living an optimistic life. However, the recent developments in Japan have proven Murphy’s Law – “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” We have to remind ourselves that, while expecting the best, we still need to prepare and plan for the worst. For that reason, our optimism cannot allow us to ignore potential scenarios that can harm us or our businesses. We must prepare and plan for possible worst-case scenarios. Good planning requires considering the “what ifs?” Coach Bear Bryant once said, “It’s not the will to win that counts, but the will to prepare to win that counts.” Preparing to win is important, but preparing for the unknown is also important. I remember a Dallas to Atlanta flight I was on when the cabin began to fill with smoke. It was thought that the plane was on fire. The pilot took the plane through several maneuvers to put the fire out. These were procedures that every pilot is taught in “what if” or worst-case scenarios. They learned in simulation how to deal with fires. Thank goodness! I will never forget the announcement. “We are making an emergency landing in Shreveport, Louisiana.” The pilot was prepared, but what about the passengers? When you fly, do you listen to the safety orientation? It’s amazing what being prepared can do for us. It can give us peace of mind and comfort. I remember when my daughter and her family decided to “hugger down” in Houston during Hurricane Ike. They had prepared with food,

water and a generator. They fortified their home by boarding up their windows. They found that “what if” or worst-case scenario planning can eliminate the fear and stress. “If you are prepared, you shall not fear.” So, how personally prepared are you for possible worst-case scenarios? What if you were killed in an accident tomorrow; would there be a means to take care of your family? What about your children; who would raise them if your spouse were killed as well? What about your assets? Would there be a war over who would get what? I’ve been roused in the middle of the night at hotels because of fires. I just followed the escape plan. Do you have an escape plan if your house caught fire while your family was sleeping? If there was an emergency, would you have money or savings to use? What if your clean water supply was cut off, like in Japan; do you have water stored? What about your business? If something happened to you, who would take over? Do you

have a succession plan like John Millar did? Millar was owner and founder of Avalon Carpet Tile & Flooring, the sixth largest floor covering retailer with 14 locations in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware, with over 350 employees. Though he was intricately involved in his business, when he passed, due to complications of heart surgery, the business continued to flourish because of his preparation and succession planning. If your business partner died, what would happen to his/her share of the business? Would his/her spouse or children come in to work with you? Do you have a buy/sell agreement? What if

your number one supplier closed its doors owing you a lot of money; would you be able to pay your bills and still take vendor cash discounts? Do you have a line of credit? If you had a fire or your computer crashed or was stolen, do you have a backup of your records? What if you were disabled and couldn’t go to work; who would run your business? Whom have you groomed as a successor? A business owner that needs to be there to run it doesn’t own a business, he/she owns a job. Just like the Boy Scout motto: Be prepared! Good advice and a good habit. nft You never know what might happen. ● Circle 1 on Information Card

Become an Expert: Knowledge is Key When Selling Ceramic Tile As a salesperson or manager, how would you like to add significant sales and profit to your bottom line this year? I’m talking about package sales, but specifically, learning how to sell ceramic tile to complement your existing menu of carpet, resilient, and other hard surface products. Dave Stafford is a flooring industry veteran who retired as executive vice president of Commercial Carpets of America (“CCA”), a major independent flooring dealer in northern Virginia. Dave has served as vice chairman of Floor Covering Installation Contractor’s Association (FCICA), and is currently a member of their Industry Relations Committee. He was honored in 2007 with Honorary Lifetime Membership for his contributions to the flooring industry. Dave provides consulting services in government contracts and business operations. earning how, where, when, and what to sell in ceramic tile requires some effort, study and training. Take full advantage of the educational opportunities from Crossville, Daltile, Florida Tile, Ceramic Tiles of Italy, Tile of Spain and other highly regarded brands to learn tile basics and what is appropriate from a design, function, and performance standpoint. Don’t make the mistake of specifying a wall tile for a flooring application or using the wrong setting materials, as you’ll wish you had spent a few hours studying the 2011 TCNA Handbook for Ceramic, Glass and Stone Tile Installation. Start out small. Grow the size of your jobs over time to that 50,000 sq. ft. job for your local mall retrofit. First off, those types of projects require an installation team that is focused on production, are fraught with peril when it comes to floor substrate condition and overall working conditions, and can offer very little profit potential. The ideal beginning job is an add-on to a larger job. For example, let’s say you are specifying a carpet replacement job for an activity room, and notice that the existing resilient tile in a corridor leading to the exterior building entrance is in bad shape. The client has asked for your opinion on a replacement product, stating, “Maintenance has always been a headache and the area is slick when wet, and no matter what we do, it just doesn’t look good. I want some other product – upscale in design, colorful, and easy to maintain.” Rather than suggest another resilient product or a liquid-applied floor, consider an 8” or 18” ceramic tile in one of the new upscale color introductions

that will brighten an otherwise drab area. Be sure and specify a complementary color to other finishes and a type and color of grout consistent with the expected traffic. In other words, don’t choose a bright, white grout if you’re going to have a lot of traffic from uncovered, outside areas. The grout lines will always look dirty and not show the tile to its best advantage. Specify a tile with an imbedded grit or embossed surface texture so as to promote slip resistance, but not so much that it will be impossible to use a wet, damp, or dry mop. You certainly don’t want to have a sea of fuzz floating around the floor, leaving a grayish cast. With ceramic and stone installations, a big key to success is thorough floor prep, specifying the right setting materials, and having qualified, certified

tile installers. Some ceramic or quarry tile floors are much more forgiving of a high MVER and will be just one more reason to specify ceramic. Make sure you also follow through with the right accessory products such as transition and edge strips or guards. Metal, rubber or vinyl trims are available in straight and curved and flexible forms to complete the tile installation or abut another flooring product. With a little study, though, you will demonstrate your ceramic prowess and professional qualifications by picking just the right ones. Do not make the mistake of leaving off the metal edge strips, which encase the ceramic tile and provide much needed protection against edge breakage. Most edge strips are designed to be embedded into the setting material, and then the ceramic tile installer will position the ceramic into the setting material and against the edge. This method provides

products, especially for commercial applications. Partner with your ceramic supplier to learn their product range and the best application for each style. The right supplier will make it easy to pick just the right style, or even a good, better, best selection for your potential project. The supplier’s interest is getting the project by partnering with you; they have no interest in suggesting a marginal product or one that may not perform up to its full potential. Give them a chance, and they’ll make you look like a hero. There is no substitute for knowing the classes of products and where each are designed to be used. I believe there is a ceramic tile and setting method for just about any commercial application. Be sure to discuss all job requirements with your ceramic tile and installation product vendor. by Dave Stafford doing the installation, the expected and intended traffic, and the product performance expectations. In my history of commercial sales, I was forced into learning about ceramic by a client who insisted that, “Since you want to sell me 9,900 yards of carpet, how about handling the ceramic part of the project, too?” The ceramic portion involved a small area (16 sq. ft.) in front of each doorway (about 200 doorways in the job). With my inexperience at the time, I saw handling the ceramic portion of the entire job as an irritant rather than an opportunity. I did everything possible to avoid handling the ceramic because I didn’t want to involve another crew and the hassle of shipping and site supervision. To no avail my client said, “I want one contractor to handle the flooring; do you want the job or not?” That got my attention, and so I went to my local tile showroom, met with
a staff designer, and got a crash course on the type of ceramic that would be

With that information, I was able to put together design boards, sample accessory items, suggest the type of installation and provide a detailed scope of work. I used a higher markup for all of the extra effort and when the job was complete, it turned out to be one of my most profitable jobs that year! That taught me a lesson and should be instructive for you. Some clients will select ceramic because it promises to be low maintenance. However, one needs to remind clients that “low maintenance does not mean no maintenance or shortcuts.” In one memorable commercial application, a client had experienced several slip and fall accidents in a corridor leading from a production area to an office setting. So, he specified an 8” ceramic tile with a surface grit that would enhance slip resistance. At first, all went well; however, in lieu of the weekly machine-scrubbing to remove the residue of oil and grease being tracked from the production room, they

began to substitute wet mopping, which turned into damp mopping. While the floor still appeared to be clean, and actually had a soft, attractive patina, the oil and grease residue had overwhelmed the slip resistant particles on the tile and became a slip hazard. The next thing the flooring contractor heard was, “The ceramic tile you sold me is no good; all of those ‘slip resistant particles have worn away’ and the tile is defective.” After an inspection and thorough cleaning, the grease and oil residue buildup was removed and the client admitted that “the tile seems as good as new, so I guess we will have to

For example, if an exterior concrete slab receives rain, the moisture on the slab’s surface will cause the slab to curl down. Once the concrete slab dries, the slab will relax and flatten out.
Q: I am confused by the terminology for the types of concrete joints and what they do and whether they can be covered or not? A: I find a lot of confusion as it relates to concrete joints. There are basically four types of concrete joints: Isolation, Expansion, Contraction or Control (saw cut), and Construction. All joints are subject to movement until the slab is dry and stabilized. Even then, the isolation, expansion and construction joints are prone to movement and should be honored. Control joints will stabilize and can be gone over, but an installation begun too early will result in joint show-through. To avoid confusion for nomenclature for joints I have gone to a different terminology: Dormant or active. One way to determine if a joint is active is to spread plaster-of-Paris across the joint and allow it to dry. Return a week later to see if there is a fine crack along the joint. If there is a crack, it is active. If no crack appears, it is dormant.
Q: What is the best way to prepare a concrete surface that has an adhesive on it? A: This is a tough question, as the response will vary depending on the adhesive on the concrete and the adhesive to be used. Some adhesives require complete removal while others can be applied over a thin adhesive residue. The compatibility of a new adhesive with an old adhesive is always a concern when residue of the old adhesive is remaining.
Q: How long will new concrete tend to crack? A: To quote a friend: “All concrete cracks and that’s a fact.” About 80% of concrete cracking occurs during the first year and the final 20% occurs two to three years after. If there is still cracking after three years, it is generally a sign that something structural is causing it. Q: What factors determine concrete movement? A: There are two major factors that cause concrete to move: temperature and moisture (humidity). Concrete will move twice as much due to changes in temperature, compared to moisture.

by Ray Thompson When the control joints are too far apart the concrete will make its own joints. These will generally be intersecting cracks.
Q: In several of your articles you have referred to concrete slab temperature rather than ambient temperature. Manufacturers do not make any references to slab temperatures; why do you feel it is so important? A: All too often, I am on an installation site where the heat is supposed to be on and the slab is supposed to be stabilized. I find that the ambient temperature in these situations is about where it is supposed to be, yet the slab is about 10 degrees F or more cooler. This tells me the slab is not acclimated. Starting an installation over a cold, un-acclimated slab is asking for problems with crack and joint show-through as well as difficulty working with materials and adhesives. The slab temperature does not lie about acclimation. Q: How does moisture move in concrete? A: Water as a liquid moves to the cold wet side of the slab. In order for moisture to move out of the slab it must convert to a vapor. Once converted, the moisture vapor will seek the warmer, dryer side of the slab. For example, if the slab is warmer than the ambient temperature the moisture, due to the loss or lack of heat, the moisture in the air (humidity) will migrate into the slab. Q: With curing and sealing compounds used on concrete being very difficult to remove, can an installation be completed over them? A: Flooring manufacturers and ASTM F-710 “Specifying Concrete Slabs to Receive Resilient Floor Coverings” specify not to use any type of curing, sealing or parting compound on the surface.
22 ● May 2011 I www.ntlfloortrends.com
Flooring manufacturers do not and cannot keep up with the curing, parting and sealing compounds that are used on the surface of the concrete. These products impact how an adhesive bonds to the concrete and, in some cases, are incompatible with adhesives. Curing compounds are put on the slab to hold the moisture in the slab and are designed to degradate over a period of time. Unfortunately, some are put on very heavily and some lightly, which means some will release the moisture quickly and some slowly. Sealers are designed to be used as a walking surface to control dusting, not serve as a substrate for flooring materials. Parting compounds also known as “bond breakers” are designed for tiltup construction, so the walls can be poured on the slab and then tilted up into place. If any of these compounds are used they must be removed prior to the installation of flooring materials. Failure to do so can result in an adhesive failure. Q: Can you explain the American Concrete Institute’s (ACI) Flatness and Levelness issues as compared to the traditional 1/4” in 10’ requirements? A: The American Concrete Institute (ACI) has established floor flatness (FF) and a floor levelness (FL) method of measuring how flat and level a concrete slab. The FF and FL factors are designed to replace the 1/4” in 10’ we are most accustomed to and are a logarithmic scale. These numbers are calculated so that the higher the number, the flatter and level the concrete floor. The ACI current specification for a slab on grade is FF 35 / FL 25. To help one understand this, an FF 20 is twice as flat as an FF10 and only half as flat as an FF40. Unfortunately, the average slab in North America is FF 18. There is no correlation between the floor flatness factors and the straightedge tests in 6’ or10’. Remember the concrete industry has super flat slabs at FF 300, so it can be done. The bad thing about a concrete slab is the floor flatness tests are normally done about two weeks after the concrete hardens, and as the concrete dries the floor flatness factors change. I hope I have answered some of your questions about concrete. If you have any other questions regarding concrete nft or any other resilient flooring installation, drop me a line. ●

or the first time in its history, Coverings was held in Las Vegas. According to show organizers, the move led to more than 100 firsttime Coverings exhibitors appearing at the show, along with a 71 percent increase in attendees from West Coast states and an 82 percent increase from the Rocky Mountain region. The show overall saw a slight dip from 2010, with around 19,000 attendees and more than 800 exhibitors. “Being a new exhibitor and introducing a new product to the industry, ForzaStone had high expectations for the show and we’re happy to report, Coverings delivered,” said Lindsay Rider, ForzaStone marketing and PR manager. “We met with everyone from large, wellknown distributors to expert installers, which was our main initiative as we develop nationwide distribution.” The Tile Council of North America (TCNA), which said that U.S. tile consumption has seen a slight increase of 6 percent from 2009, unveiled several additions to the 2011 TCNA Handbook,
and announced that research had begun for a hypoallergenicity standard to evaluate ceramic tile and installation products. TCNA research scientist, Dr. Jyothi Rangineni, is developing a protocol to test the hypoallergenic qualities of tile and installation products. On the show floor, attendees witnessed companies stretching the possibilities of size, including the aptly named The Size, which measures 12’ by 4’ by 1/5”. Geometry played a large role in developing the latest collections from Lea’s triangular Gouache collection and Apavisa’s hexagonal façade, as did textures for Tagina’s Wire System, and hand-carved curves in Artistic Tile’s Ziva collection. Nature-inspired creations were popular among exhibitors with BonTon’s sepia-toned Botanical series; natural stone motifs from Marazzi with Archaeology, Mediterranea’s Essence, and Casa Dolce Casa’s Belgique; as well as high-gloss marble looks from Grespania, Florida Tile, StonePeak and Iris. The number of manufacturers using

recycled pre- and post-consumer content has increased from previous years, as has the amount of antibacterial tile offerings, including the newly launched bios collection by Casalgrande Padana. In terms of color use, the palette of choice has moved from beige neutrals to bold accent tiles surrounded by the new neutral: Gray. Also featured at the show were visually appealing mosaic tile applications, including products from Sicis, Onix Mosaico, Mosaico+, Bellavita, and Stone + Pewter Accents. As in previous years, more than 500,000 pounds of surplus tile and stone were diverted from the landfill thanks to the show’s ongoing collaboration with Tile Partners for Humanity. TPFH was aided in the collection by Mountain Re-Source Center. Coverings 2012 will be held April 17-20 in Orlando, Fla. ohawk won three top NFT Styling Excellence Awards, for its Aladdin Commercial carpet collection, SmartStrand with DuPont Sorona Color Wall display and Dal-Tile Del Monoco porcelain tile. According to Bart Rich, Mohawk’s director of brand management, the Aladdin Commercial collection was designed to “create a type of feel where people would understand that these products are tailored for Main Street commercial.” The display for the Aladdin collection was designed to be functional, easy to maintain and low-profile. The company’s
SmartStrand with DuPont Sorona Color Wall unit, on the other hand, was designed to create a big impact, Rich said. The unit measures nearly 7’ by 10’. “We wanted to create something that would truly be the focal point in the store. It needed to be large enough in scale but functional at the same time. The products and colors that were chosen hit about 90 percent of what consumers are choosing from,” Rich noted. Dal-Tile’s Del Monoco porcelain tile is designed to emulate Old World travertine stone. Lori Kirk-Rolley, DalTile’s sr. marketing director, said the product incorporates tumbled edges and wide and natural shade variation for a realistic look. “We developed the color palette to include four very rich earthtone colors, and we specifically added a warm gray tone,” she noted.

aticrete donated stone installation products from its MVIS line for a episode of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition that aired recently. Palm Harbor Homes in Fort Worth, Texas, worked with the Daltile Fort Worth Stone Center and Laticrete, installing a random drystack pattern of Daltile engineered thin-stone tiles for the exterior veneer of the Brown home in Wellman, Texas. The installation included 200 sq. ft. at the exterior entrance of the house, a smaller interior section, and a protruding dining room exterior veneer. “The Laticrete MVIS system was amazing,” said Adam Holman, assistant production manager at Palm Harbor Homes. “We installed the stones here and drove it a good 200 miles, then had it crane set when we got there. We didn’t have one stone come loose.”
