Introduction The Committee on Statistics, at its sixth session, held in November 1985, decided that ESCAP should produce an annual statistical pocketbook containing principal series and key indicators for the region based on data already available within the secretariat. Asia-Pacific in Figures, the outcome of that decision, is now published for the twentieth and final time in this format. Asia-Pacific in Figures is intended for those who need to know at a glance the basic features and trends in the region. The explanatory notes provided should facilitate an understanding of the data, which cover many important socio-economic aspects of development. The data presented in this edition of Asia-Pacific in Figures refer to 58 regional members and associate members of ESCAP. Wherever possible, official government data have been used. Where official government figures are not available, the tables draw on data from the United Nations and other international sources. For Hong Kong, China, the data for periods before 1 July 1997 are for the territory of Hong Kong. For Macao, China, the data for periods before 20 December 1999 are for Macau. The designations employed and the presentation of the material in this publication do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the Secretariat of the United Nations concerning the legal status of any country, territory, city or area, or of its authorities, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries.

Explanatory notes Population Total population. The population figures are based on the de facto definition, which counts all residents, regardless of legal status or citizenship, except for refugees not permanently settled in the country of asylum, who are generally considered part of the population of the country of origin. The figures are estimates, as of 1 July of the year indicated, based on data from population censuses or population registers and updated with information on fertility, mortality and international migration. Population growth rate, annual. The rate represents the annual percentage change of the population size. Female population. Female population figures are presented in women per 100 men, as of 1 July of the year indicated. Population aged 0-14 years and aged 65 years and over. Data are presented in percentage of total population and refer to 1 July of the year indicated. Urban population. Urban population as percentage of the total population is the share of the de facto population living in areas classified as urban (according to criteria used by each country or area) of the total population. Data refer to 1 July of the year indicated. Urban population growth rate. The annual percentage change in urban population size. Crude birth rate and crude death rate. Data refer to the number of annual live births and deaths per 1,000 population which occurred or were registered in that year. Population density. Data refer to the number of persons in the total population per square kilometre of the surface area.
Health, education and culture lnfant mortality rate. The number of deaths of infants under one year of age in a given year per 1,000 live births in that year. Life expectancy at birth. The number of years a newborn infant would live if prevailing patterns of age-specific mortality rates at the time of birth were to stay the same throughout the child’s life.

Number of physicians. Physicians are persons who are graduates of a medical school or faculty and are actually working in the country in a medical field. Literacy rate, youth. Represents the percentage of people aged 15-24 who can, with understanding, both read and write a short, simple statement related to their everyday life. Literacy ratio, youth is calculated as the literacy rate, youth for women divided by the literacy rate, youth for men. Education net enrolment ratio primary level. Represents the number of students of official school age who are enrolled in primary education (as defined by the International Standard Classification of Education, ISCED) as a percentage of the total population of children of official primary education school age. Telephone lines and cellular subscribers. Telephone lines refer to the number of telephone lines connecting subscribers' terminal equipment to the public switched network and that have a dedicated port in the telephone exchange equipment. Cellular subscribers refer to users of cellular telephones who subscribe to an automatic public mobile telephone service that provides access to the public switched telephone network using cellular technology. lnternet users. Data are based on reported estimates based on reported lnternet Access Provider subscriber counts, or calculated by multiplying the number of hosts by an estimated multiplier. However, comparisons of user data can be misleading because there is no standard definition of frequency (e.g., daily, weekly, monthly) or services used (e.g., e-mail, World Wide Web). Personal computers. Personal computers (PC) are computers designed to be used by a single user at a time. Figures are based on country questionnaires or estimates derived from industry sales figures, shipment data and number of lnternet users.
National accounts and prices Gross domestic product at constant 1990 prices. Data on national accounts refer to the summary data for national accounts compiled according to the System of National Accounts (SNA). Unless othewise indicated, total and per capita gross domestic product are in purchasers' values. Gross domestic product in purchasers' values is defined as (a) the difference between the gross output value
vii
of resident producers minus the value of their intermediate consumption plus duties, (b) the sum of domestic factor incomes (i.e., compensation of employees and operating surplus), indirect taxes net of subsidies and consumption of fixed capital, and (c) the sum of government and private consumption expenditure, gross capital formation in fixed assets and stocks and exports minus imports of goods and services. Household consumption as share of gross domestic product measures the expenditure of all resident non-government units, which includes all households and private non-profit institutions serving households. Gross domestic saving. Calculated as the difference between GDP and total consumption expenditure in the national accounts statistics. Gross domestic product per capita is derived by converting the national currency into United States dollars based on the average official exchange rates for the period. The official exchange rate might differ significantly from market exchange rates. Debt service as share of exports of goods and services, or external debt service, refers to principal repayments and interest payments made to non-residents in foreign currency, goods or services. Inflation rate. Data refer to the annual average change in the consumer price index (CPI). It reflects changes in the cost of acquiring a fixed basket of goods and services by the average consumer. The Laspeyres formula is used unless otherwise stated in the country notes.
Trade, transport and tourism Exports and imports of merchandise trade refer to international merchandise trade, which includes as far as possible, all goods which add to or subtract from the material resources of a country as a result of their movement into or out of the country. Thus, ordinary commercial transactions, government trade (including foreign aid, war reparations and trade in military goods), postal trade and all kind of silver (except silver coins after their issue), are included in the statistics. Since their movement affects monetary rather than material resources, monetary gold, and currency and titles of ownership after their issue into circulation, are excluded. Passenger cars. Passenger cars cover road motor vehicles designed for the conveyance of passengers and seating not more than nine persons
viii
(including the driver). Taxies, jeep-type vehicles and station wagons are included. Special purpose vehicles such as two-wheeled or three-wheeled cycles or motorcycles, trams, trolley-buses, ambulances, hearses, military vehicles operated by police or other governmental security organizations are excluded. Railway network density is obtained by dividing the length of rail lines by the land area (in square kilometres). Rail lines are the length of railway route available for train service measured in kilometres, irrespective of the number of parallel tracks. Air passenger travel. Air passenger travel is defined in passenger-kilometres and relates to scheduled civil aviation traffic of the airlines registered in the country for total operations, international and domestic, for which remuneration is received. Tourist arrivals refer to persons travelling for pleasure, health, business, meetings, study (including students and young persons studying abroad), etc., and stopping for a period of 24 hours or more in a country (country of arrival other than that in which they usually reside). Tourist receipts. Data refer to the receipts of a country in the form of consumption expenditure, i.e., payments for goods and services made by foreign visitors.
Finance Government revenue. Data refer to all non-repayable government receipts, whether requited or unrequited, other than grants; revenue is shown net of refunds and other adjustment transactions. Government expenditure. Data for government expenditure and expenditure of education, health and defence refer to all non-repayable payments by government, whether requited or unrequited and whether for current or capital purposes. Money supply: money and quasi-money (M2). Money equals the sum of currency outside deposit money banks and demand deposits other than those of the central Government. Quasi-money equals the sum of time, savings and foreign currency deposits of resident sectors other than the central Government. The data on money are frequently referred to as M I , while the sum of M1 and quasi-money gives a broader measure of money similar to that which is frequently called M2.
ix
lnternational reserves minus gold. Data refer to the United States dollar value of monetary authorities holdings of special drawing rights (SDRs) held by monetary authorities, reserve position in the International Monetary Fund, foreign exchange and the sum of these items, which is total reserves minus gold. Lending rate is the bank rate that meets the short- and medium-term financing needs of the private sector. In practice the retail lending rate usually varies according to the creditworthinessof borrowers and the objectives of financing. Exchange rate. Data refer to the units of national currency required to purchase one United States dollar and pertain to the period average. For some countries or areas, mid-point rates (i.e., the average of buying and selling rates) are used.
Labour force and production Employment to population ratio refers to the number of employed persons aged 15 years and over divided by the total population of the same age group. Unemployment rate is calculated by dividing the number of persons who are unemployed during the reference period by the total of employed and unemployed persons during the same period. The unemployed comprise all persons above a specified age who were not employed during a specified reference period but were available for work and had taken concrete steps to seek paid employment or self-employment. National definitions of unemployment may differ from this recommended internationalstandard definition. Beyond the question of definition, measuring unemployment remains a challenge. Underreporting, especially in the case of women, is common, particularly in countries with large informal and agricultural sectors. Population employed in agriculture. The proportion of people employed in agriculture, forestry, hunting and fishing as a percentage of the total labour force. Women wage employment in non-agricultural sector refers to the share of female workers in the non-agricultural sector expressed as a percentage of total employment in the sector. The non-agricultural sector includes industry and services. Employment refers to people above a certain minimum age who worked, or held a job, during a reference period. Employment data include both full-time and part-time workers whose remuneration is determined on the basis of hours worked or number of items produced and is independent of profits or expectation of profits.
X
Agricultural production, food production and non-food agricultural production indices are based on the sum of price-weighted (international prices) quantities of commodities produced The index of agricultural production covers all crops and livestock products of a country The index of food production covers commodities considered edible and containing nutrients Thus coffee and tea, although edible, are excluded because they have no known nutritional value Industrial production index. Data refer generally to mining, manufacturing and electricity, gas and water, and do not include construction unless otherwise indicated. Electricity production. Data refer to gross production of electricity by public and private sectors.
Natural resources and environment Energy consumption per capita. Data refer to the consumption of commercial energy in the form of solids, liquids, gases and electricity. €netgysupply. Data refer to commercial energy use measured in units of oil equivalent per $1,000 of GDP converted from national currencies using purchasing power parity (PPP) conversion factors. Carbon dioxide emissions per capita. National emissions of CO2 from industrial sources are derived from United Nations consumption data for gas, liquid and solid fuels plus cement manufacturing and gas flaring statistics, to which appropriate emission factors have been applied. Total land area. Data refer to total area, excluding area under inland water bodies. Inland water bodies generally include major rivers and lakes. (1,000 hectares = 10 square kilometres). lrrigated land area. Data refer to areas purposely provided with water, including land flooded by river water for crop production or pasture improvement, whether this area is irrigated several times or only once during the year stated. Protected area. Data refer to the area protected to maintain biological diversity as percentage of total surface area of a county. Protected areas, both terrestrial and marine, are totalled and expressed as a percentage of the total surface area of the country. The total surface area of the country includes terrestrial area plus any territorial sea area (up to 12 nautical miles).
XI
Human development index The human development index (HD/) is compiled by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It is a composite index measuring the average achievements in three basic dimensions of human development: longevity, educational attainment and a decent standard of living. Performance in each dimension is expressed by a value between 0 and 1 by applying the following general formula: Dimension index = jActual value - Minimum value1 [Maximum value - Minimum value]
For details on how the HDI is calculated, see the technical notes in the UNDP Human DevelopmentReport 2006, or the website .
SYMBOLS Unless otherwise stated, reference to "tons" indicates metric tons, and the term "billion" signifies a thousand million. The following symbols are used in the tables: . . . not available or not applicable
-
nil or negligible
Substantial breaks in the homogeneity of a series are indicated by a vertical line.

Footnotes: a/ In countries where two or more education structures exist, indicators were calculated on the basis of the most common or widespread structure. In the Russian Federation this is three grades of primary education starting at age 7. However, a four-grade structure also exists, in which about one-third of primary pupils are enrolled. Gross enrolment ratios may therefore be overestimated.; b/ Estimated on basis of total emDlovment:
