notice of oriental
inTtlcd for iiiti'odueing tho present work to general and Arabic scholars in
ricliolar.s in
Having been interested for many years in the colloqnial Egypt, the compiler was strnck - as, no donbt, all those who have studied colloquial Arabic must also have been-by the wealth of the dialect, not only in words but informs of expression and subtle meanings, and the more he studied the subject, the more he liccanie convinced of the necessit\- and utility of a vocabulary to
i)articnlar.

to
the
still
uncomprehended treasures of
colloquial Arabic.
But it was not until ISDl that he began to collect his materials. His plan at first was to conq)ile a simple book of some two hundred as the work progressed he foimd that it was gradually ijiiges, but o-rowing larger until at last its size as originally contemplated was Finding this to be the case, the compiler decided ijreatly increased. to "ivc the book a wider scope, and for this purpose he introduced a large number of administrative, financial, engineering, mechanical and military words which he met with in his perusal of a mass of official publications. The idioms and the slang phrases Avere obtained not only l)y reading almost all the literature of which colloquial Arabic can boast, but by listening and carefully noting casual words and trivial phrases as they were used in connnon conversation. book was ready for the i)n'ss, but be imagined that all the phrases and characteristic expressions in use amongst the natives of this country have been given. No single comjjiler can hope to make an exhaustive lint collection, it can be confidently stated that the material here collected represents almost all that a foreigner wouhl nu'ct with in In the early part of the year the

was oltcn met

in
ascertaining
the precise
meaning of some words. The comi)iler then had recourse to his friends and in certain instances conflicting definitions were given. Tlie reason is not f;ir to seek. Collo([uial Arabic not having been writti'u until ijuite recently, woi'ds are sometimes used as the fancy ot the speaki'i- dictatos. fn these cases, the meanings given are those most imiversally accepted. As regards the idi(jms and the slang, the conqiiler did
English idioms, and where this was not possible, an expression as near as possible resembling tlie original was given. For this reason many of the English idiomatic and other expressions can be improved upon, but the student can be assured that no pains have been spared to render the book accurate and trustworthy.
his best to obtain the equivalent
While the book was in the press objections were made to the derivatives separately given and to the translitei*ation. Those experienced in teaching Arabic to foreigners in Egypt know that only a small percentage of these study the syntax and the grammar and that the Egyptians themselves are often at a loss to find a word in a purely Arabic lexicon where the derivatives are given only under the root verb. As tar as the transliteration is concerned, the system adopted is that of the late Spitta Bey - pronounced by scholars to be the most scientific - simplified by a distinguished American scholar. It may perha])s ])e added that no system of translitei-ation is perfect and the adoption of system is a matter of taste. In conclusion, the compiler wishes to express his grateful thanks
numerous friends, both in this country and al)road, for tlieir kind assistance and encouragement whicli gave him fresh vigour at moments Avhen he felt w'eary, and enabled him to summon up courage to bring his work to a conclusion. He wishes that it were possible lor him to name them all, but certain considerations prevent his doing S(j. Mention must, however, ])e made of I. G. Mussawir Bey, of the Piildic Works Department, who read a part of the manuscript making to his
valual)le suggestions.
Thanks are also due to the printers for the diligence and skill with which they have executed their difficult and complicated task, submitting to numerous alterations and corrections whilst it was in the press. Cairo,
y^uvcmber 1895.
S. S.
NOTE.
The mnnner which the compiler has adopted
in giving the verbs appears to hira to be easier than that hitherto followed by Arabic lexicographers. Only such forms and derivatives are given as are more generally used by the natives. The present tense, given in parenthesis after the past, is omitted in the transliteration when it is formed from the past by the prefix "//". The plurals, the formation of which is one of the main difficulties of the language, are invariabl\- yiven. The asterisk denotes that the word is fureiini.
