What is wool?
1
Wool is a material. A material is used to make something. We use wool to make fabric.
2
Where does wool come from?
3
Most wool is the winter coat of a sheep. It is also called the fleece. Some wool comes from camels, goats, and rabbits.
4
5
Sheep do not need their fleece in the summer. They get a haircut with special scissors. These scissors are called shears.
6
How is wool made into fabric?
7
Wool from a sheep is dirty and full of knots. First it needs a hot, soapy bath. Clean wool is fluffy.
8
9
Next, clean wool is brushed. This makes it smooth. Then, the wool is twisted into yarn.
10
11
Yarn can be dyed different colors. Then it is ready to weave or knit into fabric.
12
13
Weaving is pushing yarn over and under other strands of yarn. This makes a pattern. Knitting is making loops of yarn and joining them in a pattern.
14
How does wool feel?
15
Wool is cozy and warm. Some kinds of wool feel soft. Some kinds feel rough and itchy. How does wool feel to you? 16
Why do we use wool?
17
Wool fabric is stretchy and strong. Try to pull some yarn. See if you can break it!
Wool keeps us dry and warm in cold weather. Thin wool fabric can even keep us cool in warm weather. 18
What do YOU have that is made from wool?
19
Does your family have a wool blanket? Do you have a scarf or socks made from wool? Maybe your hat and mittens are wool. Look in your closet!
