Big, Blooming & Wild! Two Fine for Pine Isabella Jordan Botans Charles and Christopher have found a wonderful home in Cana, Virginia. Half the small population is made up of farmers, musicians, and craftsmen of all kinds who’ve been there for generations. The other half is made up of nudists and other free spirits who came to Cana for the beautiful, green mountains and the opportunity to express themselves in a stress free environment. When Vanessa Arnault arrives in town, the twins immediately know that their woman has finally arrived, big, beautiful, and exotic. There’s just one problem. Her father owns the land the Botans call home and she has an idea for a signature line of puppy palaces and kitty condos for the pets of her affluent friends and acquaintances back in NY and Paris. She’s even picked out two trees, the tallest and grandest oaks in the wooded area, for the first puppy palace meant for her own pet. Charles and Christopher have a lot to do and a short time to do it in. They must convince Vanessa that her idea for designer pet homes isn’t the best she can do, win her heart, and claim her as their mate. It’s either that or risk being cut down and used to make a miniature Taj Mahal for her pet poodle Pierre.

Chapter One “You know what I think of this place?” Vanessa Arnault glanced around at the endless acres of trees and rich countryside of Cana, Virginia, and smiled. “That your father should have punished you by giving you a French vineyard instead?” Brenda stood just behind her with her arms folded across her chest looking bored out of her mind. Vanessa knew how her friend felt. When her father had announced his latest and most devious plan to force her to grow up, she’d considered being sent to Cana a fate worse than death too. They were out in the middle of nowhere. No clubs, primitive shopping at best out here in the sticks. There was nothing for miles but cows, farms, more cows, and people of all types who stared at her wherever she went and not in a good way. “I know things seem bleak now,” Vanessa began. “But I’ll tell you something, Brenda. I’m going to take Daddy up on his challenge.” Brenda’s expression went from bored to incredulous. “You’re going to become a farmer?” “No.” Vanessa laughed. “He wants me to grow up and learn about the real world, right? He gave me this land and six months to figure out what to do with it to turn a profit. I’m going to prove to him I can do it.” “He threatened to take away your credit cards again, huh?” “Oh, shut up!” Brenda had been her best friend since they were two and knew her father nearly as well as she did. Her friend knew how the drill went. “Maybe he did. But what if, for once, I proved myself?” Brenda’s burst of laughter didn’t surprise her. It did piss her off.

“If you were going to prove yourself to your father, Vanessa, why couldn’t you have done it last year when he sent you to his store on Rodeo Drive? You had the perfect opportunity to break into the fashion industry right there.” “You mean working for the evil troll who manages that store?” Vanessa asked. “The only thing I learned from her is what happens when there’s no respect for basic human rights.” “She fired you for boinking that French guy -- what was his name? -- in one of the dressing rooms,” Brenda reminded her. “Oh yeah.” Vanessa smiled at that naughty little memory. “His name was Etienne. And she would have fired me anyway because she was a troll.” “And you don’t like to do any real work,” Brenda pointed out. “That was harsh, Brenda. I can do real work. I’m going to do a lot of real work right here in this place.” “I still wish you could have found ambition last year on Rodeo Drive.” Brenda shook her head. “What the hell are we going to do out here? Develop a line of designer Christmas trees?” “I thought of that.” And she had. “But then I had this brilliant idea at the spa.” Brenda’s dark eyes met hers. “I’m afraid to ask.” Walking over to one of two incredibly tall trees next to them, Vanessa knocked on its solid trunk, careful to do so gently because its bark was rough. The last thing she needed to do was crack one of her airbrushed nails until she could figure out if there was a spa in hillbilly hell. “Look. This is a huge, gorgeous oak tree.” “I’m impressed you knew it was oak,” Brenda told her. Vanessa reached into her Prada tote and pulled out the Nature for Dumbbells book she’d bought before she’d caught her flight out of New York. “There are a ton of trees here, all quality wood that can be made into something that can turn a profit.” “You’re going to make furniture?” Brenda asked.

“Even better.” Her friend would love her idea since she was a pet lover too. “We’re going to make designer pet homes.” “Pet homes?” Brenda’s pretty smile lifted her spirits. “Vanessa’s Precious Pet Palaces.” She held her arms out for effect. “What do you think?” “Love it!” “The first one is going to be for Pierre, my baby poodle,” Vanessa explained. “A perfect, miniature Taj Mahal. There are all kinds of crafty people who live here who can make anything out of wood.” Brenda had caught onto her excitement, her black eyes gleaming. “My kitty? Tinkles? What about her?” “Hmm, how about a miniature Buckingham Palace?” “Make it Chateau Gaillard and you’ve got a deal.” “Wonderful choice.” The two trees she stood before drew her attention. Oak trees and they looked remarkably similar. Well, you don’t see that every day. They appeared to be the biggest and best two oak trees as far as the eye could see. They’d be perfect to use for the first two pet homes for Pierre and Tinkles. “What are you doing?” Brenda asked as Vanessa pulled a can of red spray paint out of her purse. “Marking these two trees. They’re the best I’ve seen. We’ll use them to make our first two precious palaces.” “Since when do you carry spray paint? You’re going to start a graffiti business too?” Vanessa drew a huge red X on the trunk of each tree, doing a good job in her opinion. “No, my book said I’d need some way to mark the trees I wanted for specific purposes.” Vanessa shrugged, tossing the can back into her bag. “Let’s head back to the house.”

At least they had a decent place to stay. The house was nearly a hundred years old and it offered a wonderful view of most of her new property even if it was lacking in basic necessities. Vanessa would love it even more once the hot tub arrived and she had it installed. The closets would need to be expanded and all the old-fashioned décor would have to go. Then there was the satellite dish, high-speed Internet, a home gym… Once she’d made some modifications and found a decent chef willing to come out to the sticks, living there just might be tolerable.

*** I always wondered who owned this land. Now we know. Charles’ voice in his head held a touch of concern and Christopher didn’t understand why. Christopher shifted from his natural Botan appearance as the mighty oak to his human form once the two human women were out of sight, staring down at the red X the gorgeous one had left on his lower torso. What are you doing, Christopher? Christopher grinned up at his twin brother, who was still in oak tree form. “I’m going to get ready for a trip into town.” At last they’d found her, the woman meant to be their mate. They’d been waiting for decades and he didn’t mean to waste any time now that she’d arrived. “Are you coming with me?” He could feel his brother’s aggravation. Within seconds, Charles began to shift. His bark became smooth flesh, his roots drawing out of the ground to form human feet. Leaves drew in or scattered on the ground at his feet. Once his brother had fully transformed, he stood frowning in front of him. “Was this necessary?” Charles motioned to the red X that rode a little higher on his abdomen than Christopher’s did. “This isn’t good.” “Are you kidding? This is wonderful, man. That’s her. She’s the one we’ve been waiting for.”

Charles clearly didn’t agree with him. His brother’s deep green eyes, identical to his own, shot daggers at him. “Just so we’re clear, you mean the paint wielding woman with the miniskirt?” “Who else?” What was wrong with Charles? Why was he being so obstinate when they’d finally found their mate? “The other one was way too skinny. Vanessa. That’s what her friend called her. Big, beautiful, cocoa skinned Vanessa. I liked her little accent too. Think that was French?” Charles shook his head at him. “You don’t watch nearly enough television. Of course her accent was French.” His brother was right. The television was a vital part of the human culture and their primary source of education. They had one in the small metal house they kept. They’d filled it through the years with many things that could be found in a human residence. Christopher just preferred being outside with his kin, the other Botans who were searching for mates, and the rest of the forest he called home. He enjoyed feeling the wind and the rain through his branches, the wonderful changes in temperature. He could experience none of that staying inside their metal box. Besides, sitting in one spot for hours watching the humans talk nonstop on television got on his nerves. Some of the channels they watched now that Charles had gotten the satellite service were just barbaric. Shows where they cooked plant life of all kinds, his kin. Shows where they graphically depicted the murder of his tree kin and all the ways the wood from the slaughtered trees was used. It pissed him off. The moment a human was killed anywhere in the world it was all over their news shows. He never saw a thing on the shows about the senseless slaughter of hundreds of trees each day. Which only proved that most humans were insanely self-important. Yet, not all of the humans were bad. The free folk who often came into the woods to camp and have fun, nudists and hippies they were called among the humans, seemed like a good lot. Their diets were hideous because they were primarily made up of all type of plant life. Yet they actually showed concern for the environment, their home,

and he and Charles always enjoyed their visits. Almost immediately upon their arrival, they took off all of their clothing and went about their day in their natural form. Christopher, who’d never understood why it was necessary for humans to wear all of that stuff when in human form, totally respected that. Charles shook his head, folding his arms across his chest. “What makes you so certain she’s the one, brother?” “Can’t you feel it?” Christopher couldn’t believe he didn’t sense it as strongly as he did. “I did the moment she walked up to us. It’s her. And she’s perfect.” “She’s sturdy.” Charles shrugged, ever the practical one. “She’s attractive. But we’ve seen several girls just like her over the last ten years. What makes her the one?” “Instinct tells me it’s her,” was the best explanation he could offer. It was the truth. If Charles expected him to say that a bird whispered into his bark or he saw a halo over her head, he could forget it. Instinct was all they had to go on here. Sure, they needed a female who was sturdy as his brother put it. Someone who could survive the hard winters this planet sometimes had. The winters had decreased in severity over the last twenty years, but still they needed a stout mate to weather the cold. No frail female for them. They also needed a female who was lusty and wanted to take both of them on because it was tradition in their family. He and Charles did everything together, shared everything, and a mate would be no different. It also didn’t hurt to find a female who was pretty and attractive. He couldn’t put his finger on why he was so enchanted with Vanessa. He just was and that was good enough. Besides, if they found a mate he was more likely to spend time with her than Charles who couldn’t be more boring if he tried. His endless devotion to studying the planet that was now their home baffled Christopher sometimes. So it only made sense that he should be the one to decide who their mate was. It should be someone he liked, someone who turned him on. He’d be a rotting stump before Charles decided on a female. He couldn’t wait on that.

“Instinct?” Charles’ expression was clouded with doubt. “That’s what you said about the stripper from West Virginia five years ago, remember?” “That was a bout of lust, I’ll admit.” Christopher had to give him that one. “She wasn’t a good choice, just like you said. She was into substances… What was that called?” “Cocaine.” “Yes, that. And she wouldn’t have made a good mother to our seedlings.” “And this one will?” “She looked incredibly healthy,” Christopher pointed out. And he couldn’t wait to get his hands on all that creamy, smooth flesh. “She did.” “She’s vivacious and charming,” Christopher went on. “If by that you mean shallow and self-centered, then you’re correct. Did you listen to what she said? She means to cut down trees, starting with us, to make miniature houses for poodles and pet cats. Not my idea of a life mate.” Christopher had to laugh at that. “We can change her mind.” His brother’s eyebrows shot up. “Don’t be so certain. She sounded pretty set on this course.” “She’s set on not losing her privileges. She won’t do any more than she has to in order to get what she wants. I could probably talk her out of this crazy idea in ten minutes. Then we come up with something else that would make her father happy and that would allow her more time to spend with us. And I definitely want her spending more time with us. Besides, once she’s our mate, we’ll be the Elder Wood…” Charles shook his head. The lecture was coming. Christopher could tell. “We’re that already because we were the first to awaken. We don’t need a mate for that though it would be nice to lead the way in that regard since we are the Elder Wood. But now that we’ve been here for, oh, sixty years, I realize that it’s not such a big deal.” That was a new argument for Charles.

“It is a big deal,” Christopher argued. “The other Botans all listen to you and respect you. I’ve always told you that I’d be there with you but you’re the oldest and you’d obviously be in charge --” “They listen and respect us because we’re the biggest. That’s why. And I really don’t care about the whole Elder Wood thing anymore, Christopher. There are so many other things to do.” Christopher rolled his eyes at his brother. He wasn’t making this easy at all. “Well, you’ve got so much to do?” Christopher started in the direction of their metal box home for human clothing. “I’ll pursue Vanessa by myself.” He stopped to look back over his shoulder at his brother who wore a comical expression on his face. “What?” “You’re going by yourself?” Charles asked him. “Yes. We’re not joined at the hip after all. I can do that.” “That’s not how it’s done in our family, Christopher.” “I don’t give a damn about tradition.” “What if something goes wrong, Christopher? Thought of that? That could have some interesting consequences.” Christopher shrugged, past the point of caring. The only thing he had to worry about was Charles shifting to his Botan form while they were separated. Not always, but often when that happened, he’d be forced to shift too. That’s the way it was in their line. That could be awkward. Still, it was better to try than to vegetate for sixty more years. “I’ll take my chances,” he told Charles. With that, he marched off in the direction of their human home. Charles was annoyed with him and he didn’t agree about Vanessa. But he knew his brother would follow him on his quest anyway.

Chapter Two “Brenda?” Vanessa grinned at her friend over her generous portion of chocolate pie before glancing again at the gorgeous man who’d just walked into the restaurant. “What would be the perfect thing to have after I eat this beautiful piece of pie?” Her friend’s dark eyes were clouded by boredom as she lifted her cell phone to check for calls for the hundredth time since dinner had started. “You know the reception sucks out here.” Now that gorgeous man was watching Vanessa in a way that had her body heating up fast. She took a finger and scooped up a white puff of whipped cream topping from her pie, making a great show of licking it off her finger. And oh, didn’t that get his attention? “Now answer me.” Brenda shrugged. “Another piece of pie?”

“How about a piece of ass?”

A pretty smile formed on her friend’s face at that. “Where?”

“He’s behind you. Don’t look yet.”

“Is he alone?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Damn! That figures.” Still, Brenda seemed more animated than she had been

since they arrived in Cana. “Okay, so he looks good. But he’s probably a local. Thought of that? He could be a pig farmer for all you know.” “Snob.” Vanessa giggled as a pretty young waitress greeted him. “So what if he is a pig farmer? He can fry my bacon if he wants to.” And apparently he wanted to because he pointed in the direction of their table. The waitress looked unsure but after a moment, she led him to them. “Excuse me, ma’am,” the girl in her pink uniform said to Vanessa. “The gentleman said you were waiting for him?”

Okay, she could see why the waitress was confused. She and Brenda had gone through the entire meal without one mention of someone else joining them. Still, she didn’t want her potential man for the night to feel uncomfortable. “I have been waiting for him.” Vanessa grinned at him saucily before returning her gaze to the waitress. “Thank you.” “You got the check, Vanessa?” Brenda tossed her phone into her purse, looking at her expectantly. Her friend would leave her with the man. It was decent of her considering their desserts hadn’t been there for very long. When Vanessa nodded to the cheesecake in front of her friend, Brenda waved a hand at it. “I’m probably going to have to purge for two days to get rid of the rest of dinner,” Brenda told her. “I’ll live.” With that, her friend slid across the vinyl seat and the handsome man stood there, stepping back politely and waiting for her to rise and make her way to the door. Brenda threw her hand up in a quick wave without looking back. “I didn’t mean to intrude,” the man said, taking a seat in Brenda’s place. He wasn’t waiting for an invitation. Vanessa liked that. Though she really hadn’t given him any reason so far to think he needed one. “She was done,” Vanessa said simply. “And you are…?” “Your next lover.” Smooth. Very smooth. She liked a kindred spirit. Someone who saw what they wanted and went after it without apology. A lot of men didn’t get it. They either tried to play the gentleman until they’d embarrassed themselves into oblivion or they treated her like a dirty girl, which was fine once in a while, but that whole routine usually got old fast. “Maybe you are,” she told him. After getting a closer look at him, she knew he was definitely her next lover. He could work on the back of a trash truck and she wouldn’t care. He was fine. His eyes were a deep mossy green, lined with a heavy fringe of dark lashes the same color as his thick, gorgeous head of hair. He had a face that belonged in a Dolce & Gabbana ad

despite his Farmer Fred clothes. From what she’d seen of those cheap faded jeans, he filled them out nicely. The blue button-down shirt he wore was way outdated but he still looked nice in it. “Maybe we could go some place private and I could convince you,” he continued. Nice smooth voice. He couldn’t be a local, she decided. He didn’t have the country twang to his words. And those words all had the correct number of syllables. His vowel sounds were short and clear. “Unlike my friend, I would like to finish my pie first,” she informed him.

He smiled. “By all means. I like a woman with a good appetite.”

She made him wait until she’d taken the first bite to respond to that. While the

rest of her meal had been deep fried and swimming in gravy, the pie was just excellent. Creamy and rich. “Appetite for what I wonder?” Vanessa teased him. That earned her only a small shrug with a single shoulder. “A woman with a good appetite for food only makes her sturdier.” That had her pausing before the second forkful of pie could reach her lips. “Sturdier?” Vanessa snorted. “There’s a word I’ve never had used on me in a pickup.” “Desirable,” he offered. “Is that better?” “Much.” He seemed content to watch her enjoy the pie, and she took her time, trying to make a little show for him since he seemed so interested. Before she downed the last bite, she smiled at him. “So what’s your name?” She should at least know what to call him if they were going to do the nasty. “Christopher.” “Christopher what?” “It’s just Christopher.” Vanessa nodded at him knowingly. “I get it. Are you married or something?”

“Married? No.” He didn’t answer her in a way that made her suspicious at all. The strangest expression crossed his face. “Why?” “You didn’t give me a last name?” Did she have to point out the obvious? Was he one of those hunky-but-stupid types? “Last name.” His brows arched for a moment and he nodded. “Right. My last name is Oaken.” “Christopher Oaken.” It had a nice swing to it. “So what do you do here, Christopher?” “Do you mean a profession? I guess you could say I’m an environmentalist.” Vanessa finished off her pie and pondered that. She was pretty sure she knew what an environmentalist was. Her father called them tree huggers and dolphin lovers. He said they often got in the way of good business. And her business was cutting down the trees to make into pet homes. At least it would be. She had to wonder what he’d think of that. Maybe she’d keep that under her hat until she got what she wanted from him. “Tell me about you, Vanessa.” His voice broke into her thoughts as she wiped her mouth and placed her napkin on the plate before her. “How did you know my name? Do you recognize me?” Again, a strange expression. “Your friend called you Vanessa. I’m pretty sure I haven’t seen you before though. What’s your last name?” “Arnault. My father is the famous designer.” That had to ring a bell. Yet she could tell from the blank look on his face that he had no idea what she was talking about. “Designer of what?” Was he kidding? “The clothing designer. Probably the most famous designer in the world now.” Hello? Christopher nodded at that. “Sounds like a good line of work. Designing human clothing. Are you a designer as well?”

Human clothing? What did he think she meant by clothing designer? Designing clothing for farm animals? “No.” It was her father’s fondest dream to have her follow in his footsteps. Probably why she resisted it. “I’m here for something else. To check out some land my father owns.” “I see. Where does he own land?”

Careful now. Truth was best. She didn’t have to elaborate on what she planned to

do with it after all. “Are you familiar with the old Vaught house on Dusty Mile Road?” Christopher’s expression sobered a little and he nodded. “I know that house.” “He bought it and several acres of land around it. I think from the original owner’s great-grandson.” “From Tim Broussard?” Vanessa nodded. Well, he seemed very well versed about the area. “It’s a beautiful plot of land,” he said. Christopher leaned closer, placing an elbow on the table before him. The smell of him immediately got her attention. It was a fresh, woodsy smell -- but manly too. Very nice. “What does he plan to do with it, Vanessa? The house and all that land?” Vanessa stuck with the truth. She just didn’t think it a good idea to reveal her entire plan. “He’s sent me here to see what I can do with the place. So I’m fixing up the house and talking to people about what we might do with it.” His face split into a wide grin at that. “So you’re planning to stay here for a while?” That was better. Now he was shifting his focus back on her where it needed to be. “I’ll be here a lot,” she explained. “Most of my friends and family are in New York and Paris but I’ll be here for quite a while, yes.” “That’s just what I wanted to hear.” Oh, that grin of his was growing all kinds of sexy.

“Why? Just because I’m going to be here for a time doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll be spending it with you.” “I can make you want to spend time with me.” That confident, was he? Okay, now she really had to check this guy out. “I’m willing to give you the chance to prove that.” Still, it seemed fair to warn him about how she rolled. “Just one thing. I’m not ready to settle on just one guy yet and that poses problems at times…” His expression, if anything, became more eager. “I have absolutely no problem with that.” “Really?” How cool was this? “So you don’t mind sharing me?” “No.” Damn. She wondered what other type of kinky things he might be into. Then she wondered why she was just sitting there and continuing this conversation. “How about I take care of the check and we make like a tree and leave?” She’d heard one of the locals use the phrase that day and had been dying to use it. Christopher chuckled at that. Okay, it wasn’t that funny. He did have a nice laugh though.

*** Christopher always struggled with going into wooden structures. The home Vanessa’s father had bought for her was an impressive piece of architecture but it was made with trees -- his kind. He could still remember the noble trees they’d cut down to put on the addition back in the fifties. He’d been just a seedling but he remembered the screams the humans couldn’t hear, the sadness they’d all felt. Charles and he, along with the other Botans, had been there less than ten years at that point and he remembered wondering what sort of awful place Seq Viren had left them in. A shudder passed through his form as they approached the Vaught house. He’d always thought he’d like to see a human go into a house constructed from human bone and flesh. Then they might understand his dilemma.

He didn’t think he would be able to go in and be with Vanessa in the way he wanted to. That meant he’d have to think of an alternate plan and fast. He’d need to keep her outside. And that would work out great because Charles would be watching. He wanted Charles to watch. He knew his brother wouldn’t be able to resist Vanessa’s charms for long. Charles would have to see that Vanessa was the one meant for them. Vanessa chattered on while he considered where they might go. A nod from him here and there seemed to please her. It wasn’t that he didn’t care what she was saying. He would have cared very much if he’d had any idea who all the strange beings she kept mentioning were. Dolce and Gabbana? She knew another set of twins then? And who was Ralph Lauren? “Here we are.” Vanessa stopped before the stairs of the house, flashing him that smile he’d already come to love. She was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. He loved her dark eyes and her skin that was the color of fresh earth, beautiful brown. She was full-bodied and curvy. Her hair was a shining waterfall of black. Vanessa was perfect, exactly the woman they’d been looking for all along. He just couldn’t go into that house with her.

“Vanessa, it’s a beautiful night. Do we really want to go inside?”

He could tell by her expression he’d caught her off guard.

“I’ve got a big, beautiful bed upstairs,” she offered.

Probably made of oak. “What about the big, beautiful woods out here?”

“How tightly do you hug those trees, Christopher?” she teased him.

“How tightly do you?” he couldn’t resist throwing back at her.

“I’m no tree hugger.” Her expression wasn’t one of distaste when she said it.

That was something. “Not yet,” he warned her. “Let’s go into the woods. Near the pond.” “Oh, no. We’d get eaten alive by mosquitoes. And there are places where I don’t want to get bitten if you know what I mean.” “By me?”

He’s better at that sort of thing than we are, after all. But yes, he liked it. He’s so proud of me, guys. He’s so happy.
