hen I started my career in publishing in 1988 (three days removed from a weekend of Grateful Dead concerts) I was hired by Tradelink Publishing to work on two magazines: Stone World and a recently launched publication called Tile World. Since Stone World had been established four years earlier and had by then built a name for itself in the international natural stone industry, my charge was to learn the tile industry, get to know its players and build the sales for Tile World almost from its inception. It was an exciting opportunity for a 23-year-old. After being acquired by BNP Media in 1994, I was soon named publisher of Stone World, while Tile World was moved into a different division, renamed, and was ultimately morphed into what is now our successful flooring publication, National Floor Trends. In 2003, when the longtime publication Tile & Decorative Surfaces stopped publishing, BNP Media decided to fill the void and launch a new tile publication the following year, simply and aptly titled TILE. Flash forward to 2011, and now I have returned to my roots in publishing: stone and tile. I am still publisher of Stone World and our quarterly design publication Contemporary Stone & Tile Design (launched in 1995 to showcase the beauty and inspirational designs in tile and stone to the A&D community), and I am now your new publisher of TILE Magazine. Arpi Nalbandian continues her role as editor of TILE and she will be joined by Michael Reis and Jennifer Adams, our Editor/Associate Publisher of Stone World and Editor of Contemporary Stone & Tile Design, respectively, to

transform our editorial product into the most important news source for the tile industry. Together, we will make TILE more than an engaging read: it will be vital to your business if you are in the tile industry. We will ensure that all pages of TILE are dedicated to inform and educate our readers, whether they are distributors, dealers, contractors, designers or manufacturers. COVERINGS ISSUES ‘2012 CID AWARDS’ CALL-FOR-ENTRIES ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The CID (Coverings Installation and Design) Awards honors achievement in the outstanding use of the materials and the synergy between installation and design in residential and commercial projects. The 2012 CID Awards competitions are open to architects, designers, builders, contractors, distributors, retailers, installers and other professionals whose projects demonstrate design and installation excellence in residential and commercial applications -- giving special recognition to natural stone, ceramic tile and mosaic tile/ glass. Projects must have been completed within the past two years (January 2009 to December 2011) and be located in the U.S. Multiple entries are accepted and encouraged. AMERICAN OLEAN USED IN PURDUE’S INHOME SOLAR DECATHLON ENTRY DALLAS, TX -- In early October, American Olean sponsored Purdue University’s INhome solar home in the Solar Decathlon 2011, a solar house competition in Washington, DC, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy to help educate the public about reducing energy use without sacrificing style and comfort. As part of the competition, collegiate teams from across the country, designed and built affordable, energy-efficient, solar-powered homes. To support the INhome’s sustainable design, American Olean sponsored the Purdue team with a donation of some of American Olean’s most environmentally friendly tile products. SCHLUTER OPENS LEEDDESIGNED TRAINING, DISTRIBUTION CENTER RENO, NV -- Led by the Northern Nevada Development Authority (NNDA), Schluter-System’s new Reno, NV-based training and distribution center is projected to obtain LEED Gold certification. It is built to facilitate access to clients from the southern tip of California to the western Canadian border. “This will allow us to increase our market share and service our clients quickly, while also allowing for future expansion as demand increases,” said C.J. Madonna, Schluter General Counsel. “With the assistance of NNDA, we have been able to move forward quickly in achieving our goal.”

CHICAGO TO HOST KBIS 2012 CHICAGO, IL -- As part of Chicago’s city-wide schedule adjustments to accommodate the G-8 and NATO summits in May 2012, the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) says it has moved up its annual tradeshow and conference to April 24 to 26, 2012, at McCormick Place, with the conference beginning on April 23. Owned by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) and produced by Nielsen Expositions, KBIS brings together nearly 20,000 of the industry’s top dealers, designers, builders, remodelers, retailers, and other professionals directly involved in the design and remodel of residential kitchens and bathrooms. There will be no impact to hotel rates or availability, and the NKBA and Nielsen say they do not anticipate any impact on the number of attendees or exhibitors at KBIS based on the date shift. In fact, many KBIS exhibitors have already pointed out that they prefer this new date pattern during the week versus the weekend. Florida Tile. In 2009, the company announced its continued commitment to the North American market by moving and expanding its headquarters from Lakeland, FL, to Lexington, KY. The company and the Governor’s office have stated that the new facility initially will create 25 new jobs -- growing to more than 50. The project was one of the first to be approved for incentives through Kentucky’s Business Investment Program, established by Governor Beshear in 2009.

Doing the honors with the ceremonial ribboncutting scissors are Florida Tile President Michael Franceschelli and Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear. The new corporate offices are located at 998 Governors Lane, Lexington, KY, 40513. Speakers included not only Beshear and Franceschelli, but also Bob Quick, President and CEO of Commerce Lexington Inc., and Kevin Atkins, Chief Development Officer for the LexingtonFayette Urban County Government.

“The attraction of Florida Tile’s headquarters facility was a big win for Kentucky, creating dozens of new highwage, professional jobs and a multimillion dollar investment,” said the Governor. “I am excited to be part of today’s celebration that will no doubt be just the beginning of a long and successful partnership.” The new Beaumont Center headquarters situates Florida Tile’s corporate offices strategically near the Lexington, KY, airport, as well its manufacturing plant and national distribution center in nearby Lawrenceburg. RAVENNA, ITALY -- After opening a new shop in Istanbul, Turkey, in May, Italian tile manufacturer Sicis says it is ready to double its presence in the Turkish metropolis with a new store in Nisantasi -- set to open mid-autumn this year. The new store will open in a particularly popular and extravagant area of the city, according to the company. “With its artistic mosaics on the exterior wings, large shop windows, the Cosmati pavements enriched with carpets and marble and glass decorations, and walls covered with a specifically designed texture made with Murano Smalto, Colibrì and marble, will entice shoppers to come in and browse,” reports the company.

People in the News NEW HIRES AT LATICRETE BETHANY, CT -- LATICRETE has announced Adrian Rivera as its newest Technical Services Representative. Based in the Bethany, CT headquarters, Rivera most recently worked for Ferazzoli Imports of New England, a tile distributor located in nearby Middletown. At that post, he worked in various capacities, all focusing in some way on customer service. Prior to that period, he worked a number of years in Florida at Gulf Tile Distributors. ast year brought the first increase in U.S. tile consumption in four years. According to U.S. Census Bureau figures, tile consumption was at 2 billion square feet, up 7.7% (in square feet) from 2009. Though there is still a long way to go before we return to prerecession numbers, it was a step in the right direction. Through 2Q 2011 YTD, U.S. tile consumption was at 1.04 billion square feet, which represented a 1.9% increase versus 2Q 2010 YTD1. Table 1 lists U.S. shipments, imports, exports and total consumption in square feet. Though U.S. tile consumption was up last year and at the midway point of 2011, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, consumption was still very low compared to recent years. Chart 1 16

U.S. This was a decrease of 2.9% from 2Q 2010 YTD, in which 730 million square feet of ceramic tile were imported, but an 11.1% increase from 2Q 2009 YTD totals. Imports made up 68.0% of U.S. tile consumption (in square feet) through 2Q 2011 YTD -- their lowest percentage since 1998. Imports’ share of U.S. tile consumption has declined five years in a row as demand for domestically produced tile has steadily increased. Table 2 shows the top five countries from which tile was imported (in square feet) in 2Q 2011 YTD and, for comparison, their 2Q YTD totals over the past two years. 18

Through 2Q 2011 YTD, Mexico remained the top exporter to the U.S. in square feet, with a 30.9% share of U.S. imports, its highest share on record. Mexico has held the top position since 2008, and its share of U.S. imports has increased each of the last eight years. China held the second position, comprising 25.0% of U.S. imports (in square feet) -- its highest share on record. Chinese-produced tile has gained market share every year since 1999, and its share of U.S. imports has doubled in the last five years. Italy was in third place with a 17.7%


share (in square feet). U.S. consumption of Italian tile has fallen significantly over the past decade. Italy’s share through 2Q 2011 YTD (in square feet) was roughly half of what it was 10 years ago. Brazil and Spain round out the top five exporters to the U.S. (in square feet) comprising 6.2% and 5.3% respectively of U.S. imports. Chart 2 shows the percent share of U.S. imports for the top five countries over the past five years. On a dollar value basis (including duty, freight and insurance), imports rose 2.6% from 2Q 2010 YTD to 2Q 2011 YTD. Italy remained the largest exporter to the U.S. in dollar value with a 35.1% share, down from 2Q 2010 YTD, in which it comprised 36.2% of imports (in dollar value). China and Mexico had the next highest shares in dollar value, comprising 20.6% and 18.2%, respectively. The average values of tile from the top five countries (based on square feet) from which tile was imported through 2Q 2010 YTD are shown in Table 3. The per unit value of Mexican imports rose 4.3% from 2Q 2010 YTD. Chinese and Italian imports’ per unit values increased 1.3% and 3.6%, respectively, from 2Q 2010 YTD.

U.S. Ceramic Tile Market Update

The per unit value of all tile imports increased 5.7% from $0.89 in 2Q 2010 YTD to $0.94 in 2Q 2011 YTD2. Domestic shipments Through 2Q 2011 YTD, domestic shipments were at 357 million square feet, up 13.3% from 2Q 2010 YTD (315 million square feet). As previously mentioned, over this same timeframe, U.S. imports were down 2.9%. This continues the trend of the last five years, in which domestically produced tile has consistently outperformed imports. Domestic shipments in 2010 were down slightly (-1.4%) versus 2005, while U.S. imports were down 47.1% versus 20053. A major reason for the growth in domestic shipments has been the weakness of the dollar versus other currencies, particularly the Euro, which has made imports more expensive for U.S. consumers. Exports U.S. exports of ceramic tile were at 23.5 million square feet through 2Q 2011 YTD, up 4.0% from 2Q 2010 YTD. The largest consumers of these exports (in square feet) were Canada (46.9%), China (18.1%) and Mexico (9.4%).4 Key economic factors GDP: Real GDP increased at an annual rate of 1.3% in 2Q 2011. GDP has increased in each of the last eight quarters, though the rate of growth has been relatively weak.5 U.S. unemployment rate: As of September 2011, the U.S. unemployment rate was at 9.1%. While down from 9.6% last year, unemployment remained at a very high rate historically. In fact, since World War II, the only years in which unemployment was greater than 9.0% were 1982-83.6 As one would expect, the high unemployment rate impedes an economic recovery, as those without jobs -- as well as those who feel insecure about their jobs -- delay making major purchase decisions such as buying or remodeling a home. Mortgage rates: 30-year fixed mortgage rates in September 2011 were at 4.11%, the lowest rate on record. A year ago (September 2010) the 30-year rate was

4.35%, which at the time was also an all-time low.7 Housing starts: August 2011 new home starts were at a seasonally-adjusted annual rate of 571,000 units. This represented a 5.8% decrease from a year ago (August 2010). Single-family housing starts in August 2011 were at an annual rate of 417,000 units (-2.3% versus August 2010) and comprised 73.0% of total new housing starts.8 New Home Sales: New single-family home sales continue to cause concern, given the historical correlation between new home sales and tile sales. New singlefamily home sales were 75% lower in 2010 than in 2005 and are on pace to decline this year to a new historical low. As of August 2011, new home sales were at an annual rate of 295,000 units, down for the fourth month in a row.9 Summary Many of the same issues that have led to the decline in tile consumption over the last five years continue to negatively affect the market, such as: • Struggling commercial construction and residential housing markets, despite historically-low mortgage rates • High unemployment and low housing prices, which lead to less purchasing power for consumers • Weak economic growth • Foreclosures: although down versus 2010, the decreases the market is experiencing – which began with the robo-signing controversy last year and continue with the help of other

programs (e.g. loan modifications and mortgage payment assistance for the unemployed) -- do not signal a real recovery but rather a slowing of the foreclosure process. • Historically low new home sales Based on the small growth in tile consumption so far this year reported by the Census Bureau and what we’ve heard from U.S. manufacturers regarding 3Q sales, we feel consumption for the year will be flat at best. SPANISH TILE EXPORTS UP 10.1%

D

uring the first half of 2011, exports of the Spanish tile industry grew by 10.1% compared to the same time period in 2010. The value of exports during the first half amounted to 954.8 million Euros (approximately $1.314 billion), and were distributed to 173 countries. Although now growing again, the scope of the international market has shown a slight slowdown overall since January 2010. 20

Geographically speaking, the European Union (EU) sector continues to remain the Spanish tile industry’s main destination, accounting for 41.9% of exports, although the EU’s growth rates have remained low (1.8% in the first half of 2011). “So far in 2011, Spain is showing positive growth,” said Rocamador Rubio, Tile of Spain director for the Trade Commission of Spain. “From January


to July, U.S. imports from Spain have grown 10%. Our expectation for the second half is to continue this positive path of growth, leaving behind a few years of rather negative results.” The Middle East has shown 31.1% growth in imports during the first half of this year. As the second highest destination of Spanish tile exports, it accounts for 20.3% of sales. Sales to the Eastern European region, where Russia

holds particular importance, have increased 21% and now account for 11.8% of Spain’s total exports. Similarly, France (with a growth rate near 9.6% during the January-toJuly 2011 time period) remains the largest market for Spanish exports. It is followed by Russia (+30.3%) and Saudi Arabia (+30.2%), then the U.K., Germany, Israel, Italy and the U.S. The Spanish tile industry exported 68.5% of its products to 178 countries, reaching 2.55 million Euros (approximately $3.45million) in sales in 2010, “branding the tile industry as the second-largest trade sector with 2010 exports accounting for nearly 1% of all Spanish exports,” added Rubio. Rubio further surmised, “If numbers continue as they have in the first half, not only for Spain, but in general for U.S. imports, then we think the bad times could be left behind. That is our expectation and hope for the U.S. ceramic tile market.” TILE

STATE OF THE ITALIAN CERAMIC TILE INDUSTRY RESULTS FOR THE FIRST HALF OF 2011 INDICATE A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE IN MARKET SHARE BY VOLUME BY ARPI NALBANDIAN

Ceramic Tiles of Italy concluded the first day of Cersaie 2011 with its annual press conference, where production rates and export results for the first half of 2011 were shared. The panel included a distinguished group of industry and trade authorities.

ith the 29th edition of Cersaie fully underway, attendees and members of the global press settled in at the conclusion of the first day to hear about the state of the Italian ceramic tile industry, including major new developments in anti-dumping regulations. The conference began with the upbeat presentation of “Ceramic Tiles of Italy -Creatività Infinita” for promoting Italian 22

ceramic tiles in the domestic market and the video “Le città di Otello,” featuring several dozen outstanding projects in Italy and worldwide. A distinguished panel presented the long-awaited results of export figures (first half of 2011) and Ceramic Tiles of Italy’s initiatives: Franco Manfredini, Chairman, Confindustria Ceramica; Gianluca Marvelli, Chairman, Assobagno; Gian Carlo Muzzarelli, Emilia-Romagna


Regional Minister of Industry and Green Economy; and Vittorio Borelli, Chairman of Promotional Activities, Confindustria Ceramica. Armando Cafiero, Managing Director, Confindustria Ceramica, moderated the discussions. According to the results presented, Italy enjoyed a 23% market share in volume quantity. In terms of value, Italy holds 61% of the market share, noted Manfredini. During the first half of 2011,

exports were 4.6% higher than the same time period in 2010 within the European Union. However, in the U.S., the value/ growth of Italian tile exports had dropped 10.1% from 2010.

Anti-Dumping Measures In addition to the improved export figures, the panel discussed several topics, including the highly charged AntiDumping Measure, of which Manfredini said is taking great measures against China by way of tariffs and taxes. The imposed measures will expire in five years. “We are for globalization, but we can’t turn a blind eye to behavior and conduct that will breakdown the economy,” said Manfredini. “The market must be guaranteed fair competition. The one who wins the competition should be judged fairly and not just the factor of who makes a cheaper product, or hiding from end-users who made the product, and where it originated.” Manfredini proposed a quality seal of some type that

Decline in U.S. tile distribution During the press conference, it was clear the declining distribution of tile exports concerned the panelists. To shed some light on this fact, we spoke with Donato D. Grosser, President and Chief Consultant of D. Grosser and Associates, Ltd., whose firm provides international clients with specialized assistance in entering and increasing their presence in the American

market, including trade associations, manufacturers, exporters and importers. “There is less business in the U.S. because people are making less money,” said Grosser. “From 2008 to 2010, 15 to 20% of small distribution channels closed, and there is nothing for them to do to recoup their losses. Larger companies with larger pockets haven’t or aren’t going to close because they can afford to wait this current situation out.” Some areas in the U.S. have been affected more so than others. “Areas that have

taken the largest hit are Nevada, Arizona and California,” said Grosser. He added history may repeat itself with California, “In the recession of 1989, California was the first to feel the impact, but also the first to recover. California may be the first to see the end of this recession as well.” The key to staying afloat — even if a business is well-capitalized — is to “shorten the time of going through capital instead of wasting it away,” said Grosser. In summary, Grosser suggests distributors and retailers take a good look around them to see what tactics can be employed to survive this recession. “Home centers have barely declined -they’ve remained flat. Why? Because they haven’t opened any new stores, nor have they closed any. When the economy changes, people will open new stores, yet remain careful in their spending. For now, the key to staying afloat, even if a business is well-capitalized, is to shorten the time of going through capital instead of wasting it away.” TILE

ith more than 965 exhibitors from 31 countries, the 81,000-plus attendees of the 29th annual edition of Cersaie in Bologna, Italy, were treated to tile products that incorporated nature-mimicking designs, increased large-format options, new mindbending shapes, as well as updated color palettes and texture options. Rightfully touted as the largest show worldwide in the floor covering seg-

ment, tile manufacturers comprised approximately 172,480 square feet of the internal exhibition area, with ceramic product, equipment and installation companies occupying approximately 15,239 square feet of the available outdoor exhibition space. From architectural-inspired shapes and sizes to whimsical, colorful patterns in mosaic, and the increased use of mixed materials, Cersaie offered something for

every need. The following is a sampling of what was seen and experienced during the five-day event, which was held from September 20 to 24, 2011. Back to nature The look of wood in all its forms -petrified, hand-scraped and natural -- as well as the earthy tones of red, brown and graphite served as a reminder to Cersaie 2011 attendees that tile is inherently a

natural product. Offerings such as Casa Dolce Casa’s “Terra” took this a step further by illustrating the human-Earth relationship with its choice of color palette. “Wood Essence” by Cerim optimizes the link between humans and one of their natural sources of energy and shelterbuilding material -- wood. The collection is offered in six shades, several formats, and in matte and grip finishes. Settecento’s “Lacche” collection features the smooth glass-like look of river stone covered by shallow water. The white body 12- x 12-inch wall tile is offered in eight colors. Ceramica Sant’Agostino’s “Externa” is a porcelain stoneware collection designed for outdoor environments, and is “perfectly in tune with the new design-oriented living settings promoted by the most current trends,” the company noted. Slim, not delicate Among Lea Ceramiche’s five new product launches at Cersaie was Slimtech “RE-evolution,” a new 3-mm-thick stoneware product available in a 300- x 100-cm format. By blending colored glass, various clays and enamels, coupled with a high firing temperature, Lea says it has reached “perfect calibration of the materials.” Tactile textures Mutina’s exhibit proved popular with the release of several new collections 26

from several notable designers: brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec; Yael Mer; Shay Alkalay; and Patricia Urquiola. The Bouroullecs collaborated on the “Pico” collection -- emphasizing the color variations of basic textures by using red and blue tiny spots, in regular and irregular shapes, positive and negative. The Pico range is available in the following sizes: 120 x 120, 60 x 120, 60 x 60 cm and in two mosaic models. Two textures complete the range, and the product is available in Blanc, Terre and Gris colors. Mutina’s “Folded” collection reproduced the effect of folded paper on ceramics thanks to designing team Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay of Raw-Edges Studio. According to the designers, the visual references are traditional ceramic patterns that were commonly seen in Tel Aviv apartments during the 1950s and 60s. The repetitive patterns are based on alternating colors, which the designers have attempted to recreate simply by using folded lines. The Patricia Urquiola-designed “Bas-Relief ” collection features coordinating floor and wall tile, with each of series incorporating variations in height and texture. On the “B” side Refin Ceramiche, together with designer Massimiliano Adami, experimented on the unexplored side of porcelain tile -- the underside. As part of the “Mosaici

d’Autore” collection, “Beside” brings to the surface the underside of porcelain, where geometry plays with the observer’s mind. “The analysis of the material, of its features, its “technical” structure, the geometry of the sizes and plasticity are the characteristics that we have chosen to develop this project,” Adami noted. In addition to the innovations presented in tile format, visitors also made time to attend various conferences and symposia in the third edition of Cersaie’s cultural program, “Building Dwelling Thinking.” According to Cersaie organizers, nearly 1,000 people attended the keynote lecture by Kazuyo Sejima and the “lesson in reverse” given by Alessandro Mendini. The Architecture Gallery was also wellattended, with presentations by Giorgio Bianchi from Renzo Piano Building Workshop on New York architecture; Cameron Sinclair on the initiatives of Architecture for Humanity; Kengo Kuma on projects in Japan and worldwide; and Patricia Urquiola on her vision of design. Also attracting strong attendance and interest were exhibitions “Ceramics of Italy. Le Metamorfosi” in external area 48 and “Cersaie Downtown” located in three major squares in the heart of Bologna. Tile of Spain recently hosted “”Material Matters -- Sustaining the Urban Environment with Natural Material” at the Times Center in New York City for an audience of architects and designers. The program was approved for CEU credits.

Among the speakers was architect Charles Kramer of the New Yorkbased firm Beyer Blinder Belle who presented an in-depth case study of the tile restoration work at the TWA Terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Originally designed by renowned architect Eero Saarinen, the building’s tile work has endured continuous traffic for nearly 50 years.

TILE OF SPAIN CELEBRATES SUSTAINABLE DESIGN BY JENNIFER ADAMS

W

ith the intention of promoting sustainability and green design -- particularly as it pertains to ceramic tile -- Tile of Spain hosted “Material Matters -- Sustaining the Urban Environment with Natural Material” on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at The Times Center in New York City. The event showcased several projects that illustrated how ceramic tile was a quality choice for each application and detailed reasons why it contributed to an overall sustainable design. The evening kicked off with a presentation by Charles Kramer of the New Yorkbased firm Beyer Blinder Belle about the restoration of the TWA Terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Kramer, along with colleague Richard Southwick, Director of Preservation at Beyer Blinder Belle, gave an in-depth case study of how the famous Eero Saarinen building -- with its free-flowing curves and inventive use of tile -- was restored. For almost 50 years, the tile work that clad the majority of the airport terminal had held up to the wear and tear brought on by the thousands of visitors that passed through the building each day, and the durability of the tile was a testament to its sustainability. “The expressive form of the building is very distinctive,” explained Kramer, adding that the famous building opened in 1962. “Once you see it, you will never forget it. Almost every [original] surface, 30

except the ceiling and curtain wall, was a tile feature.” The architect explained that the team from Beyer Blinder Belle dedicated time to studying the original design before beginning the restoration work. “We did a lot of research,” he said. “We looked at old drawings. Tile was in the design from the very beginning.” The presentation went on to explain how a strong effort was made to match the existing tile and sustain Saarinen’s design for the TWA Terminal. Additionally, Spanish architect Ángela García de Paredes, Principal of Paredes Pedrosa Architects in Madrid, Spain, spoke on the use of high-performance, durable materials that add character to urban environments while also providing lifecycle benefits. The architect discussed the importance of using materials that reflect the context of local environments and offer sustainable solutions. The Spanish architect presented several of her recent projects, including the Peñiscola Congress Centre in Spain. “In architecture, material isn’t something that you think about afterwards,” she said. “In Mediterranean architecture, ceramic tile plays a very important part to building an open air room.” When working on the Peñiscola Congress Centre, García de Paredes explained that they contacted ASCER, the Spanish Ceramic Tile


Manufacturers’ Association, to consult on the properties of ceramic tile and to make sure it was suited for the application. “In this case, we wanted to investigate because we thought tile was much more than for floors and walls,” said the architect. “We were sure ceramic would be a good choice.” The Spanish architect spoke on the durable and sustainable properties of tile and how it was the right choice for the project because it could withstand the local climate. Following the formal presentations, a panel discussion led by Susan S. Szenazy, Editor-in-Chief of Metropolis Magazine, was held to explore the use of natural materials in our cities. The speakers were joined by Ceramic Tile Consultant Patti Fasan and Ignacio Fernandez Solla, architect and leader of the facade team at the Spanish firm Arup. The program was approved for CEU credits. After the presentations and panel discussion, guests were able to peruse displays of new products from Tile of Spain branded manufacturers Azulev, Ceramica Elias, Inalco, Keraben, Natucer, Pamesa, Porcelanosa, Roca and Saloni, while sampling Spanish wine and tapas. Many of these tile manufacturers are now offering tile products made of recycled content as well as using “green” practices in their production processes -- further emphasizing how ceramic tile makes for good sustainable design.
