Chapter One

Compared to the scantily clad women filling the room, Toni Lloyd felt positively matronly. She grinned, knowing her ankle-length navy skirt, sensible pumps, and navy jacket over a white blouse were positively demure compared to the lady next to her in a body glove with strategic holes. Or the woman across the room holding a goblet of red punch the same color as the fabric that wound strategically around her body. Toni patted the tight bun at the nape of her neck and adjusted the fake spectacles on her nose. She smiled, a cruel, evil smile, like the substitute teacher from hell, and made her way into the throng. “Pardon me,” she said, moving around several youths with visible tattoos and chainstudded leather vests. She turned to a couple chatting in the corner. “Money for God?” She patted the leather-bound book as if it were something holier than a blank journal. Her cutting smile quickly making them scurry for the con suite with its liquid courage. Ah, the joys of playing a Ravelli. The cool, calculating vampire family had nothing on organized crime. In the corner of the room, a man with a half mask sat on a large, thronelike chair. His royal blue shirt, clearly expensive, stood out in this sea of black and red. He inclined his

head, and Toni smiled. Not yet. She’d talk to him later. Maybe after working the crowd. There appeared to be plenty of fresh meat here, and she wanted to take them for all they were worth. She stopped a young man, her hand on his arm, drawing his attention. “Mortal?” The lack of a visible family crest gave him away. Her own, the insignia of a fist around a bag of gold, hung on a pendulum around her neck. The gold chain winked against the white of her shirt. He stopped, and though he was a good ten years younger than she, Toni took a moment to admire the muscles beneath her fingers, the trim body and the way he filled out his jeans. Too young, but pretty enough nonetheless. “Maybe.” His gaze focused on her neck and its buttoned-up collar. “You’re not like everyone else.” Toni laughed. She couldn’t help it, the man’s innocent expression telling her that he’d never run into someone from her family before. “They,” she said, pointing the corner of the book at a group of youths with the insignia of the Torn, a violent vampire gang, “are blunt instruments. Whereas I am a finely tuned violin capable of making you weep and praise God all at the same time. Of course, when you honor God properly, he’ll make you scream with delight.” She inched closer, brushing her breast across his shirt. “Money for God?” The player hesitated and lust flashed white-hot through his gaze. “What about you? Seems like someone ought to make you scream too?” He inched closer, and she had the perfect view down his shirt to the growing bulge behind the fly of his jeans. Toni licked her lips. He tempted her. Oh how he tempted her out of her six-monthlong, self-imposed dry spell. Except she’d made a personal decision not to date, let alone fuck, anyone under twenty-five, and he looked barely old enough to drink. Besides, her persona wouldn’t let her do such a thing. Leave that for those who thought they were

artistic. In this guise, she had to concentrate on higher things, like raising money for her fake church. “I’m afraid I devote myself to larger callings,” she purred, stepping away and narrowly avoiding a collision with a bunch of goth-wannabes. “Besides, I have to think of my savior.”

Even if it’s more like gold coins and dollar bills than some kind of divine power. Every day Toni was agnostic, hadn’t really given much thought about it. But she’d slipped so far into the persona, that it was like she’d become Madeline Wainscott, the overseer for the Church of Twin Fires. The young man had the grace to look disappointed. “Hard to compete with God.” He shrugged. “Maybe later.” Winking at her, he turned and headed for the punch bowl. “Welcome to our humble gathering. The Master would like to meet you.” Toni followed the delectable baritone voice to its owner, a man who stood a good six inches above her five-feet-six-inch frame. A black sequined mask hid his face, though she saw wicked intelligence dancing in his vivid blue eyes. Thick hair, so dark it might as well have been black, curled enticingly around the collar of the black silk shirt he wore. The shimmering fabric and tight-fitting black jeans highlighted his muscled body. He wore black boots like an enforcer. She had a feeling if she were lucky enough to peel his clothes from his body, he’d be a delectable, kissable hunk of a man. And something told her he was probably gay. She smiled at him, allowing flirtatious interest to enter her gaze. “I’m very glad. I’d like to talk to him about his support of the Twin Fires.” He laughed, the rumble like pouring silken smooth chocolate over bare flesh, rich and warm and full of promise. She drank in the sight of his broad back as he turned and led her through the crowd. People automatically moved out of his way, whether responding to his impressive visage or simply because they knew he worked for the Master. Either way, Toni

was very, very glad. Damn, he had a nice ass. His long strides made her work a bit to keep up with him. People turned and watched them pass. Toni held her head high, her skirt swishing around her ankles. Any other game, she’d have these people eating out of her palm. Tonight, the room belonged to this man and his Master. He stopped before the throne and nodded to the man, then turned and took up his position behind the chair. Resting his hand on the Master’s shoulder, the man looked at her…and smiled. The hot, hungry look had a flush rising to Toni’s cheeks. Her attention fell to the casual way the man rested his hand on the Master’s shoulder. The gesture looked protective, possessive, and she glanced from the seated man to the standing one, trying to puzzle out the nature of their relationship. “Do you wish to introduce yourself to the Master?” the seated man said with a hint of humor in his voice. She nodded, her blush deepening. “I am Madeline Wainscott, overseer for the Church of the Twin Flames.” She curtseyed deeply, still holding onto her book. “It is a pleasure to meet you.” The Master held out his hand, clearly intending for her to kiss his large signet ring. She stepped forward, noting the man’s long, capable fingers with neatly trimmed nails. She took his hand in hers, and heat from the simple touch radiated through her body. He had hands like a quarterback, large enough to span the ball, yet skilled enough to send it exactly where he wanted it to go. That, combined with the voice, made her attention flick back to his face. Though she couldn’t be sure, and the lines would be older, more mature, she thought she recognized the shape of his mouth and lips. If she was right, then she’d spent hours fantasizing about them back in high school.

Ignoring his ring, Toni brushed a quick kiss across the back of his hand. Wishing her blouse were more revealing, she bowed deeper. “It is an honor to meet you, Master.” She lowered her voice so the last word sounded like a husky caress. Under normal circumstances, she might say she was coming on too strong, but her body hummed at the nearness of these men. Something about them sparked her interest and her desire. Unlike the black-clad man behind him, the Master had broad shoulders and a muscular build. He wore a royal blue silk shirt tucked into expensive black trousers and black leather shoes. The military-short cut of his blond hair only enhanced his jade eyes, making him look like a sunny day compared to his companion’s dark night. And she could easily imagine herself as the dawn, held suspended between the two extremes. Toni stifled a moan. “Interesting seeing you here. Why don’t you have a seat? I’d like to know more about your church.” The man gestured to a plush chair beside him. Though the words were couched to stay in character, she detected a flare of interest in his gaze and wondered what might happen once the game ended later this evening. “Thank you,” she said, taking the seat next to him. The man who’d summoned her still stood behind him, but she sensed him shifting, standing between the two of them, almost like he guarded them both. If some silent signals passed between the Master and his companion, she didn’t see them and wondered anew at their relationship. He leaned over and whispered in her ear, “So is Madeline your real name? Because you don’t look like a Maddie.” His breath warmed her earlobe, and for a moment, she thought he might take it between his teeth and nibble. Her breath caught in her throat. Losing control wasn’t part of her persona, no matter how much this man made her want to rip off her clothes and offer herself to him. Especially since she was thinking he reminded her too much of Kane Frasier, high school heartthrob and quarterback extraordinaire.

“Toni Lloyd. You?” She made it a point of turning and looking at him. A heartbeat separated them, and her mouth opened in silent invitation. His gaze dropped to her plump lips. “Kane Frasier. It’s very nice to meet you. Though if you’re going to be the Master’s woman, we’ll have to work on your wardrobe.” He reached out and brushed his knuckles along the column of her throat. A soft, strangled whimper emerged as his fingers found the top button and unhooked it and then the second. The tips of his digits slid into the opening he’d created. “There, much better,” he said. She could only sit there and stare at him, wetness dampening her panties. “Much better,” the man behind them agreed. “Don’t you think?” Toni didn’t know what to think, and that was the oh-so-delicious problem. For someone who yearned to be pressed between two strong, virile men, these guys scrambled her brain cells. She managed a nod and a strangled “Yes,” only to listen to both men chuckle simultaneously. Heat rolled low in her stomach. Though she hadn’t ventured near the punch bowl yet, the world tilted with fuzzy edges like she’d imbibed a bit too much. “Beau Vioget,” he said. The French name, combined with his dark good looks, made her think of long nights filled with expensive wine and decadent bubble baths. Oh the fun she could have with him. He bent down and whispered something in Kane’s ear, and the two men shared a look that nearly curled her toes. Could they be? Toni watched for a moment longer, certain that back in high school Kane hadn’t given any impression that he might be gay. If he were, then that might shed a new light on why he’d never returned her advances or asked her out to the dance. Though he hadn’t really asked out anyone else, either. There might have been one or two girls, but nothing stuck in her mind, except him saying that he had to focus on his football. It was supposed to be his way into college.

“Very nice to meet you,” she said to Beau. She turned back to Kane. “So what would you like to know about my order? I can tell you anything that you’d like to know.” She stroked the front of the book like she wished she could caress Beau’s bare chest. “How about we not talk about your church for now? I would think one such as yourself might cultivate your parishioners in a little different location.” Kane gestured to the mostly black-clad players circulating in the room. Too-loud laughter mixed with free-flowing punch, most of it spiked, added to the party ambiance. Though there was regular roleplaying happening, for the most part, the Live Action Role Playing was being used as a way to meet and greet outside the confines of reality. Toni wavered, torn between the role-playing experience and the need to get to know Kane more and find out if he was the same guy she’d crushed on in high school. “Can it not be said that these are the people most in need of my help?” She gestured to a group of young men who wore insignia from a deranged family. “Take them, for instance. Though they cling to their madness as if it were a security blanket, I think they would find the cool succor offered by my church to be a refreshing change from their dark descent. Don’t you think?” “I think people such as they may not find the relief you do in such things. There are some who like to play in the darkness.” Kane’s words warmed her, made her think of wanton and wicked things that happened once the lights went down and the clothes came off. “How about you, Miss Wainscott? Do you like to play in the darkness?” Her breath caught and held. Did she? Her fantasies thrived in the darkness, without the harsh, unfeeling light of day. It was why she found herself drawn to these events. She could toy with aspects of her personality that under normal circumstances she kept under lock and key. “Very much so. And that is why I seek the light, to make the darkness all the sweeter.”

If he did dally with a woman, and he had had his share, he’d compared them all to her. So far, they’d all come up short. Did she recognize him? If he wasn’t misreading her, she wanted him and Beau. Instead, he drew the conversation back to her church and its founding. If she’d created it herself -- and he figured she had because the game’s source material hadn’t mentioned it -- then she’d done a thorough job. Back in high school she’d been smart and witty. It seemed that her abilities had carried into adulthood. Beau leaned down. His lover’s warm breath caressed the side of Kane’s neck. He shivered, knowing that if they were alone, Beau would nibble his way down to Kane’s shoulders, then kiss and lick the flesh there, while holding him still. To think that his lover gave tacit permission for Kane to take Toni back to their room and make love to her took his breath away. He realized she stared at him; most likely she’d asked something, and he’d completely missed it. Behind him, Beau chuckled low in his throat. “I’m sorry. I didn’t quite catch that,” Kane admitted. Toni grinned and followed his gaze out to the floor where two women twined around one another, both dressed in very skimpy costumes. Though he hadn’t seen them until that moment, no doubt she thought he’d been captivated by the sight. “I understand. If I swung that way I might be a bit distracted too.” She rested her hand on his knee. “I had asked if you were in the area or if you’d come from out of town.” He stared at her fingers, thinking if she moved them a few inches higher she might see that it wasn’t those women but the one sitting beside him who affected him. For a moment he debated about moving her hand. Her light touch would feel even better running the length of his cock. Behind him, Beau cleared his throat. Shit, he hadn’t been so unschooled since high school, when he struggled with wanting to kiss the boys and not the girls. “We’re far enough out of town to make this a mini vacation for us.” “Us?” Her eyebrow lifted, and her hand pulled back. “You here with a friend?” She fished for information.

Chapter Two

The red ribbons announcing them as LARP participants probably would have garnered looks even if she weren’t sandwiched between two hunks, or so Toni thought. Standing in the mezzanine, waiting for the elevator, she caught numerous stares. Some hungry, some envious, and some just plain curious. She figured she presented an odd picture. Her ankle-length dress was far more modest than the clothing worn by most participants -- though a fair share of attendees were just in jeans and shirts. Her old-fashioned garb stood out like a clown at a funeral. Add to that Beau’s tall, dark good looks on one side and Kane’s blond, rich, sexy looks on the other, and she might as well not exist at all. She was sure some of the women staring at them wished her gone. The firm pressure of the men’s hands on her back warmed her all the way to her toes. Though she couldn’t see, she thought she felt the men holding hands. Kane, football jock, holding another man’s hand. It boggled her mind and made her wet. In all the fantasies she’d had about him, never had another man been involved. Now that her fantasy might…she wanted it to happen. “Would you like a drink?” Beau’s voice drifted through her thoughts.

She had no reason to doubt that the two men weren’t good friends. They gamed together, and Beau seemed to play a protective role within the confines of the LARP. And yet, on another level, Kane’s words had an entirely different meaning. “I bet he does,” she replied. Kane only smiled. Damn him for being so infuriating. Her body hummed, the beat of music from a room party down the hall making her want to change out of these clothes and into something more suitable for dancing. “You like to dance?” She jerked her head down the hall, then glanced back into the hospitality suite to see if Beau had returned yet. “Sometimes. Might be a bit crowded down there, though.” A crowd of people came laughing down the hall. “Yeah, you have a point.” Beau reappeared, easily sliding between them with three glasses balanced in his hands. “Your drink.” He offered her a red plastic glass. “Thanks.” Toni took it from him, their fingers brushing. She attributed the heat that flushed across her cheeks to the hallway. Taking a sip, she smiled. She watched over the rim of her cup as Beau handed Kane a cup and kept one for himself. Both men took long drinks, then Beau gathered the glasses and tossed them into the trash can. She finished hers, anticipating the rush of warmth that came from the generous portion of rum and threw her glass away.

“Where to now?” Beau asked. “Toni wants to dance. What do you think?” Kane smiled at her. “The dance is tomorrow night. I can wait, or maybe I’ll hit the room parties after the LARP is over.” Her pulse fluttered in her throat. Her lips suddenly went dry, and she wished she hadn’t gotten rid of her drink. The atmosphere changed, charged, and Kane’s statement, “Beau knows what I like,” filled her mind. “If you say so.” Over her head Kane and Beau shared a look, then Kane punched the button for the elevator. “Okay,” she said. Then the elevator dinged, and they were returning to the game. She had a feeling that whatever opportunity she might have had was lost.

***** Kane sensed Toni’s hesitation and her desire for both of them. Frankly, he didn’t know which turned him on more. Over her head, he shared a look with Beau and knew the other man agreed with him. Take this slow. There wasn’t any need to rush things. The elevator doors opened, and once again, somehow they had it to themselves. He ushered her inside, the doors closing behind them. “So, what would you say if I told you that I wanted to kiss you?” Kane asked. Toni’s eyes widened. Her lips parted. “I’d…” Kane leaned in, bracing one arm on the elevator wall against her head. Beau moved on her other side. “You’d what? You’d like it? You’d want more?” Kane whispered the questions against her lips. When she didn’t reply, he closed the space between them and kissed her. The years and anticipation only made it all the sweeter when she sighed and melted against him. With his free hand, Kane skimmed it down her side, feeling her shapely rear through the thick skirt she wore. With space between her and the elevator wall, Beau slid his hand in above Kane’s, his other braced on Toni’s shoulder.

The doors opened. Distantly, Kane realized he ought to stop the kiss. Beau stepped away, putting himself between the open door and them. Taking that as his cue, Kane ended the kiss. Toni stared at him, her eyes glassy, twin dots of color high on her cheeks. Her lips were flushed, kiss-swollen, and it took all his willpower not to kiss her again. Instead, he pulled her against his side. “Let’s go,” he whispered. Toni leaned on him, and Kane decided he liked the way her breast brushed against his arm as they walked. No sooner had they vacated the elevator than a crush of people entered it, and Beau led them down the hall. “Not going back to the game?” Her head rested against his shoulder. She didn’t sound particularly disappointed. Kane shifted his arm so he tucked her against his side. “Not yet.” He knew where Beau was headed, to a solarium on the second floor that provided lots of secluded areas. He liked the way his lover thought. Apparently they weren’t the only ones who had the thought, because the first couple of shadowed cubbies created by the tall potted trees and strategically placed benches were full. Along one back wall, they found a bench big enough for the three of them.

Kane sat down with his lover by his side. Beau touched her back as Kane eased her into their laps. His hand swept up and down Toni’s spine, and Kane knew how sensuous the movement felt. She glanced first from him, to Beau, then back again, the look in her eyes yearning. “I…” Her voice trailed into silence. “Do you want to deny your Master?” Beau asked. Though her jacket prevented him from seeing, he’d bet money her nipples were twin points aiming right at him. “No, I don’t.” Her breathy voice wrapped around his core and squeezed. “Where do you propose we go?” And with one question, she held the power back in her hands. “Our room,” Kane offered, thinking of the large, king-size bed and the box of condoms he’d brought. His lover accepted both offered hands and stood. Though there was little shuffling of spaces, together they made back to the elevators and upstairs without ripping clothes off. Beau unlocked the door, holding it for him and Toni. She didn’t hesitate. Instead, she crossed the threshold, then turned to them, already working on the buttons of her jacket. Beau closed the door behind them and flipped the lock. The chain rattled as he hooked it. Kane hardly noticed. His fingers worked at the buttons on his shirt, finally freeing them, and he tugged it from his trousers. Toni stared. She licked her lips. Striding forward, her own jacket forgotten, she flattened her palms on his chest and shoved the shirt from his shoulders. It fluttered to the ground. For a moment, she thought about a marriage proposal, except given the time that they’d known each other it seemed ludicrous. “You don’t have to be at a panel until this afternoon, do you?” Kane asked. “I’m good, though I’ll have to call the front desk and check out in about an hour,” she said, knowing that she wouldn’t be leaving the hotel after all. “That’s no problem. I just want to make sure we have plenty of time for what I’m about to say.” Kane looked over her shoulder and grinned. “Well, what we’re about to say.” He chuckled. “Oh,” she gasped, the feeling that this was getting really serious, really fast. “Yeah. I meant what I said, Toni. I have always had feelings for you, and seeing you again reminded me why I fell in love with you back then. I know we’re both older now, different people than we were in high school, but I could see myself falling in love with you now.” He reached out and smoothed a strand of hair behind her ear. “In fact, I suspect I’m probably more than halfway there.” “Me too,” she admitted. She sighed and let her eyes close as relief coursed through her. “Yeah, me too. Oh boy, you don’t know how happy I am to hear you say that. I had thought…” She shook her head. “It doesn’t matter what I thought. The point is that you’re here. I’m here. Beau’s here.” She turned to him, not wanting him to feel left out. “And apparently, I’m not alone in my feelings.” “Kane’s right. I’ll admit that I haven’t known you that long at all. What I do know, I like.” Beau grinned and winked at her. “A lot.” She laughed with the realization that all her fears were most likely unfounded. “So you guys won’t freak if I say that I’m pretty sure I never wasn’t in love with Kane and that I think I could fall for you too?” “No. We won’t freak.” Beau lifted the back of her hand to his lips and brushed a kiss across it. “In fact, I think my feelings would be hurt if I wasn’t included.”

Though his tone sounded joking, Toni didn’t doubt he meant every word. “I wouldn’t want to hurt your feelings.” She gave his hand a squeeze. “That’s what I love about you. You’re so caring for everyone. I knew that you wouldn’t leave Beau out in the cold. I’m so glad I found you again.” “Yeah, even if it was under some odd circumstances.” She laughed, thinking of Madeline’s persona. “I mean, I am talking to Kane and Beau, right? Not the Master and his bodyguard?” She leaned into Beau. “That’s what you were supposed to be, right?” “Well, I was his lover first. And yes, you’re talking to the real us. We may still be at the convention, but my mask is off and has been since after that first night. Though if you think it’s sexy, I could go put it on.” She thought for a moment, thinking about him dressed in that black outfit he wore the first night, the half mask on his face. He’d looked sexy, damn sexy, and just imagining him that way made her wet. “Maybe later.” “Hey, you two. I’m over here. And I found her first.” “There’s more than enough of me to share,” she mock-scolded him. “I know.” Kane cupped her cheek, pulling her toward him for a deep kiss. Next to her, Beau’s hands ventured along her sides, reaching up to cup her breasts. She gave herself over to the moment, to the gentle pressure of Kane’s lips against hers, to the sweep of his tongue. Opening for him, she invited him inside, moaning as Beau’s fingers found her breasts. Through her shirt and bra, he stroked her, teasing her nipples into diamond-hard points. She squeezed her thighs together, not quite willing to believe she was ready again so soon. Not when her muscles still ached, and her stomach rumbled with hunger. She pulled back. “Hey, we have the rest of the convention to go to. There will be time for this later.” She extracted herself from their caresses to stand and offer her hands to them. “Come on. Let’s go find lunch. Maybe later, I can play with the Master and his lover.”

Kane rose to his feet. “There’s no maybe about it, is there, Beau?” He bent over his lover, kissing him full and hard on the mouth. “Nope,” Beau said when he came up for air. “None at all.” Toni watched the men kiss again, knowing this was how it was going to be between them. A love they all shared, sometimes just two of them, sometimes all three. Sure, it might take time to grow, but that was one thing they did have. Time. And she couldn’t wait to see what would happen. Besides, no one said just because the convention was ending that the masks had to be put away forever.
