" Festival ~ 1980-84 Naha (Okinawa) Located in central Naha - a city in Okinawa, the Southernmost island of Japan - this commercial complex is a cubic volume whose walls encase its site. The cube consists of an eight-storey exposed concrete frame of equal spans, infilled with concrete blocks 200 mm square and, intermittently, with perforated concrete block screens. The upper two storeys accommodate an open court, spatially articulated by the building's framework, and graced by a banyan tree. Internally, an atrium has been established within the order of the frame. Plazas at different levels are woven into the space of the atrium, and the continuous vertical movement of shoppers through these spaces grants a cohesiveness and continuity to all levels.

TIME'S I
1983/84

Kyoto This commeroal complex ts located adjacent to the Sanjo· kobashi bridge on the Takase River in Kyoto. The building is a low, three-storey volume topped by a vaulted roof and enclosed on one stde by a protedive wall on the property line. It is constructed of concrete block, rough· textured black granite, and steel. The ground floor and its small plaza sit almost at the level of the river, and an ex· ternal passage, continuous with the street, leads along the river frontage to provide entry to the upper level shops by way of a deck. In this manner, a labyrinthine complex· ity is instilled within the simple geometric form of the building.

TIME'S II 1986- 91 Kyoto This addition to the TIME'S I building consists of a fourstorey volume, square in plan, and a protective wall which encloses the site along the property line. The top floor of the building is a double-height space, capped by a domical roof. While TIME'S I has an axis parallel to the river, and a linear horizontal expression, the dome of TIME'S II deliberately emphasises the centripetal organisation of the building, giving it a vertical expression. The interconnected plazas, situated at varying levels throughout the building, offer diverse vantage points. The result, in the combination of both projects, is a configuration of pathways which is dramatically more complex and circuitous.

Guest House "OLDINEW Rokko" 1985186 Kobe The site of the OLDINEW complex, on a gradient of over 1: 8, affords it a distant view of the ocean. A multi-storey entrance hall separates, and at the same times brings into intimate proximity, the four restaurant spaces, which are of both Japanese and Western type. The whole building has been composed to preserve three aged camphor trees, which existed on the site. The perimeter retaining walls, using locally quarried granite stones, are features of traditional residences 1n this area.

Die Kirche auf dem Wasser 1985- 88 Hokkaido Die Kirche liegt in einer Ebene des Yubari-Gebirges in Hokkaido. Der GrundriB zeigt zwei einander i.iberlagernde Quadrate verschiedener GroBe.
Church on the Water 1985-88 Hokkaido located on a plain in the Yubari Mountains in Hokkaido, this church consists - in plan - of two overlapping squares, of different size. The building faces toward an artificial lake, created by the diversion of a nearby stream. A freestanding l-shaped wall extends along one side of the lake, and wraps around the back of the church. A gentle slope, overlooking the lake, ascends alongside the wall, leading to the top of the smaller volume where, within a glass-enclosed space open to the sky, four large crosses are arranged in a square formation - their transverse arms almost touching. From this point, the visitor descends a darkened stairway to emerge into the rear of the chapel. The wall behind the altar is fully glazed, offering a panorama of the lake, in which a large crucifix is seen rising from the surface of the water. The glass wall can be slid entirely to one side, opening the interior of the church directly to its surrounding nature.

Wooden Chair 1988 These chairs were designed for the Church on the Water. While the chairs in the Chapel on Mt. Rokko have a rigid quality and introduce tension into a space, these wooden chairs suggest the warmth of living things. By employing not strictly geometric angles but also soft curves suited to the human body, they emphasise the gentleness of wood to the touch. The chairs have a relaxing effect on their occupants, echoing the genial mood of a church wh1ch invites one to awaken one's senses and fraternise with nature.

Church of the light 1987- 89 Osaka Located in a quiet residential suburb, this chapel derives its orientation from the direction of the sun, and from the position of an adjacent existing church building. The church consists of a reaangular volume (a triple cube), sliced through at a fifteen-degree angle by a lower freestanding wall which divides the space into the chapel and a triangular entrance space. Entering through an opening in the angled wall, one turns 180 degrees to face into the chapel. The floor descends in stages towards the altar, behind which the wall is penetrated by horizontal and vertical openings which form a crucifix. The floor and benches are made of low-cost wooden scaffolding planks which, with their rough-textured surface. emphasise the simple and honest character of the space.

The building, with three storeys above ground and one basement level, is composed of two cubic volumes- each based on a grid of nine units- which overlap at a 30-degree angle. A cylindrical volume encompasses one of the cubes, and contains a three-storey void. Ramps wind around both the interior and exterior walls of the cylinder.

Forest of Tombs Museum 1989- 92 Kumamoto The Forest of Tombs Museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting understanding of the historic cultural legacy of the lwabaru burial mounds in Northern Kumamoto Prefecture. In order not to intrude on the site any more than necessary, the museum was designed as a raised platform from which the tombs and their surroundings can be viewed, and half of its volume buried below ground. Visitors approach the museum on foot. passing first through a lush green forest. Though 250 meters away from the famed Futago-zuka, a large keyholeshaped tumulus, the museum is symmetrical to it with respect to a midpoint, engendering the perception of the museum as a contemporary 'tumulus'. The building consists of a 26m x 79.2 m rectangular volume. a circular courtyard 15.8 metres in radius. and an L-shaped wall that penetrates to the center of the circular courtyard. The excavation grounds lie just beyond the wall of the circular courtyard, while inside, a ramp winding around the wall leads visitors through displays of artifacts.

Chikatsu-Asuka Historical Museum 19850saka The Chikatsu-Asuka Historical Museum is dedicated to exhibiting and researching Kofun (burial mound) culture. Unlike conventional museums, this building not only exhibits the excavated objects, but acts as a place from which the tombs themselves can be viewed in their sur· roundings. The building, sited in a basin, was conceived as a hill from which to view the entire excavation area. Its roof, which is in effect a farge stepped plaza, will be used for various performances and events, and the entire facil· ity and its grounds are designed to function as a recreational hub for the region. Inside the museum, the display areas are dark, and the objects are exhibited as they were found in the tombs. Visitors experience the sensation that they are entering an actual tomb.
