Similarly, the creation of a cinema industry did not happen because of the business acumen of any one man or company. The Lumieres captured the public imagination, but they could not hold a monopoly on the production and exhibition of films. Their invention was copied and exploited in countries where their patents did not apply. In the United States, Edison initially dominated the market, but soon had competition from other moving picture systems. It became clear to all concerned that, because no particular system had a unique selling point, the only way to make a success in the business would be to produce films that told a story, rather than show the one-shot wonder of a man combing his hair or a woman dancing. The fundamentals of film spectacle as we know it today - sound, colour, widescreen - were all being striven for within a few years of that first Lumiere show. In 1900, at the Paris Exposition, the latest in cinema technology was on display. This included Cineorama, a primitive sound system relying on a separate synchronized sound disc, and hand-tinted films giving a gaudy illusion of colour. Audience reactions to these cinematic 'effects' can be judged from these observations on 'Living Pictures' that appeared in a general family reference work, The Sunlight

GEORGES MELIES Perhaps the most important innovator in the early history of cinema was Georges Melies
(1861-1938),
who within

discovering film, made hundreds of short films and pioneered many of the methods that would remain at the heart of special effects production for much of the next century. The father of special effects was the youngest son of a French boot-making tycoon and was expected to follow his father and two brothers into the trade. His destiny, however, did not lie in filling the family shoes, and when his father retired Georges Melies sold his share in the family business. With the considerable proceeds he purchased the Theatre Robert-Houdin in Paris, one of the most famous magic venues in the world. In addition to being manager, Melies took to the sulphur and sodium life of the theatre magician with a flourish and conjured up an array of innovative stage illusions - all of which he designed, built, painted and performed in famously comic style. Magic lantern shows were another attraction on his bill of wonders, with fantastical presentations of hand-coloured glass slides. So Melies was aware of both the science and the popularity of

There is uncertainty over the question of which studio was the first to establish a department dedicated to the creation of special effects - some claim that it was Fox, while others are convinced that it was MGM. Either way, the term 'special effects' received its first screen credit in the 1926 Fox picture What Price Glory? The term referred in this case to the film's physical and mechanical effects. New techniques were developed to help film makers present the lavish or historical settings that their films demanded. The first travelling matte processes, which allowed actors filmed in the studio to be isolated from their surroundings and placed within settings from a different time and place, were crude but enabled a degree of realism (44>). These processes were helped by the development of m u c h - i m p r o v e d camera and lighting equipment and faster, finer film stocks (22>). Since the earliest days of the industry, film makers had built small models of any object or location that was too big, expensive or impractical to be filmed in any other way. However, printer operators are sometimes presented with two pieces of film containing images whose movements bear no relation to one another and which must be locked together to produce a convincing composite. In digital image recording, light is converted into an abstract string of numbers that have no intrinsic physical relationship to the original image. The resulting digital file, simply a huge string of zeros and ones, can be manipulated by a computer according to mathematical formulae in order to change, filter and refine the information contained in the file. The information can then be copied or transferred repeatedly without any loss of quality because a computer cannot misinterpret a zero or a one and accidentally convert, warp or dilute it.

With the startling progress of digital television technology in the early 1980s, those involved in film production began to seek ways to apply digital techniques to the world of celluloid-based imagery. If a way could be found to process film in much the way that TV images were being manipulated, then the optical printer, with its associated problems and constraints, would be a thing of the past. Two major problems faced those who wished to use digital technology for the manipulation of filmed images. Motion picture images are of a significantly higher resolution than television images, and an immense amount of processing power and memory is therefore needed to store and manipulate them. Computers in the early 1980s were neither powerful nor cost-effective enough to process and store more than a few frames of film-resolution images. Even if the massive amounts of data involved could be handled, no one had yet devised an economical and efficient way of converting analogue film images into digital information and, after alteration, converting the finished work back into film.

The scanner produced digital information at a rate of tw megabytes per second - which doesn't sound like much now, bi back in 1987 that was pretty awesome.' Within a year, the CFC team had built a much more professional device that replaced the monitor with a high-resolution cathode ray tube, which presented digital images to a camera with specially designed lenses. 'By the time we had our scanner and recorder ready, we had developed the hardware and software to manipulate the images,' says Boudry. 'We did our first feature film work for a movie called The Fruit Machine [1988].' The low-budget British film featured a character obsessed by dolphins, who in one scene imagines himself turning into one. 'We had footage of the character diving into the water and got some footage of a dolphin in roughly the same position,' remembers Boudry. 'After scanning the two pieces of film into the computer, we used our new software to change the man into the dolphin by producing a sort of mix of the two elements. It wasn't a "morph" [86>] - we called it an "artistic transition". It's quite embarrassing to look at now, but at the time it knocked everybody's socks off.' Boudry is careful to point out that their dolphin shot certainly was not the first digital work to go into a feature film. 'By that time Disney had used digital effects in TRON (1982), and ILM had done the digital effects for Young Sherlock
Holmes (1985). But those
films had used digital elements that were produced within the computer and then output to film, before being composited in the oldfashioned optical way. As far as I'm aware, our dolphin shot was the first full-frame digital composite to go into a feature film.' The experience of Mike Boudry and his colleagues was not unique. In the late 80s a number of companies wishing to work in digital effects independently developed their own scanning and recording equipment. In 1995, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded technical Oscars to Mike Boudry and a number of other individuals and companies who had been instrumental in the development of the technology. Today, scanning and recording equipment is commercially produced by a number of manufacturers and can be purchased by any company that can afford the huge sums that such systems cost. Modern film scanners work on the same principles as the origi-

One mathematical bit can define only t w o gradations of colour (on and off), two bits can define four, three bits eight, four bits sixteen and so on. The most common 'bit-depth' used in digital feature film work is eight bits per channel, which produces a 24-bit image (eight bits for each of the red, green and blue channels). Eight bits per channel means that each of the three colour components of a pixel can have 256 possible gradations, and the three combined can produce a pixel with almost seventeen million potential colour variations. As well as the red, green and blue channels, each pixel normally contains a fourth channel, called the 'alpha' channel. This is used to control the transparency of pixels and to produce mattes for digital compositing.

There are, in fact, a variety of ways to measure the visual information in a scene, and often a number of different keying techniques are combined to produce the perfect matte. For example, it is not always possible or practical to place a coloured screen behind an object that is to be removed from a shot. In such cases, a technique called 'difference matting' may be used. Difference matting requires that two versions of a scene be shot - one with the element that needs to be isolated, and one without. The two shots are then compared with one other by computer software, which can automatically detect the differences between the two images and produce a matte based on the changes. This technique might be used when a large crowd of people filmed in a busy location needs to be removed from its background and placed in another environment. It might also be employed to turn a shot of a busy city centre into a

One of the first considerations when photographing a miniature is depth of field - the distance over which objects within a scene are in focus. Normal motion picture photography usually has a relatively deep depth of field - objects that are in the extreme background or foreground tend to look slightly out of focus or 'soft', but the majority of the action in the middle distance is perfectly sharp. Film makers often need apparently huge sets, but do not have the time or money to build them full-scale. One solution is to construct only those parts of the set that the actors will interact with. This piece of scenery can then be extended by combining it either with a highly realistic painting (known as a 'matte painting', 188>) or a carefully crafted foreground miniature. The foreground miniature is exactly what its name suggests - a small model of a building, landscape or other setting that is placed in front of the full-scale film set. Such miniatures are carefully designed so that their lines of perspective match those of the fullscale set precisely so that the two elements will merge together seamlessly when the miniature is correctly positioned and viewed through the camera.

Most materials, other than metal, can be cut using a computer-controlled laser to create the precise design required. Once completed, the cut-out design is covered with liquid rubber, which sets to form a mould that can be peeled off. The completed mould can then be filled with the type of material needed to produce an exact copy of the required design. 'We fill the moulds with different types of plaster, fibreglass, resin or foam, according to what is required of the final buildings,' explains Gratzner. 'Fibreglass and resins will produce a lightweight and strong shell that is suitable for many types of building. However, the models we make often have to be destroyed in the film, so we use materials that, when exploded, will produce many tiny chunks that are the correct scale for a building of that particular size.' 'George Lucas had specifically asked for green because he said it represented all the money that was being blown on the film!' Surprisingly small quantities of gas are needed to blow up miniatures effectively. Blowing up the 2m (7ft) model gas tanker in The Terminator (1984) involved just 7 litres (1lAgallons) of gas to create the apparently huge ball of fire seen in the film. Additional ingredients can be mixed with the gas to produce other effects. Adding titanium powder results in a shower of silver-blue sparks; gold sparks are produced using iron filings. '1 produced a really nice sparky explosion when we were shooting some test explosions for Star Wars,' recalls Viskocil. 'When we watched the results the next day, someone saw this explosion and said, "That's the one we'll use for the Death Star!" I'd never even heard of the Death Star by this point so I didn't know what they meant, but that explosion was the one that they used at the end of the film.' _ , . Gasoline

'It's not so important with things like aeroplanes, because the modellers usually make a number of copies, but with a big building like the White House that 1 destroyed for Independence Day [1996], you're talking about blowing up models that cost tens of thousands of dollars each - sometimes hundreds of thousands. You don't want to have to ask them to go build you another if you get it wrong!' As the shoot approaches, Viskocil prepares the explosives themselves. T h e first thing I will consider is safety. The work I do could easily kill, and no one should try anything like this without an awful lot of experience and technical know-how,' explains Viskocil. 'After considering the safety aspects of a shot, 1 will work out what the explosion needs to look like and which explosives will achieve that look. There are basically two types of explosion that I use,' he explains. 'One is largely cosmetic; it produces lots of fire and sparks. The other type of explosion is purely destructive and is used to rip things apart physically.' Gasoline is the basic ingredient used to produce billowing clouds of fire. 'You want to get the best-looking appliance you can,' says Woodruff, 'which means creating new shapes that complement the face below. At the same time, you have to think about technical aspects, such as where the finished appliance will blend into the real face, the way it will bend and perform, and how it will be moulded and cast.' Designing the way that an appliance blends into the face of the performer is vitally important. 'The giveaway is the blend line,' explains Woodruff. This is the edge of the rubber appliance where it tapers into the actor's skin. The trick is to make that line as delicate and subtle as possible.'

Every item requires a different type of foam latex, depending on its size and shape and the way in which it will be used. Producing the foam is both an art and a science. At Jim Henson's Creature Shop, the foam lab is run by Marie Fraser, who spends her days carefully measuring, mixing and cooking noxious substances. 'First, we decide what the character needs to look like and how it will perform,' explains Fraser. 'This determines the type of foam latex that we will create. A large creature whose skin does not move very much, such as a dinosaur, would probably have a skin of sturdy, dense foam latex. Smith spent six weeks sculpting Hoffman's ancient face. Referring to photographs of old people, Smith realized that, contrary to common belief, old people actually become less wrinkled in extreme old age. After a certain point, the skin becomes so thin that the lines and wrinkles that have gathered over the years actually melt away into expansive areas of soft skin. When the sculpture was satisfactory, Smith divided the face into the different sections that he required - eyelids, cheeks, nose and upper lip, lower lip and chin, and the front half of the neck. The sculpture was cut into these sections, which could be easily peeled away from the life cast because of their rubber base. These pieces were then used to produce the moulds for prosthetic appliances. The resulting foam latex appliances were prepainted to save time when applied to the actor. Even so, the 33-year-old Dustin Hoffman was subjected to over five hours in Smith's make-up chair each time he was transformed into the film's 121-year-old survivor of Custer's last stand. Smith paid particular attention to the bald skullcap that went over Hoffman's own hair. Traditionally, these caps were made of an elasticated plastic material that stretched over the actor's head. The caps were smooth and featureless and, once fitted, had to have additional make-up applied to give them texture. Shortly before Smith worked on Little Big Man, British make-up artist Stuart Freeborn had perfected a method of making a foam latex cap that had every anatomical detail sculpted on to it. The cap, developed to age actor Keir Dullea for 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), was made in two pieces - front and back - with gently overlapping edges. Smith improved on Freeborn's innovation by punching individual hairs into the edges of the cap to create a realistic fringe around the ears and neck. 'A key part of eye design is deciding the size of the pupil,' says Courtier. 'If a character has large pupils, it will tend to look cute and friendly. Smaller pupils create a more beady-eyed, evil look.' Eyeballs are made from spheres of plastic resin, ranging from tiny bead-sized globes for mice and birds, to football-sized ones for dragons and dinosaurs. The spheres, which are normally ivorycoloured to mimic the whites of the eyes, have one curvature ground off, leaving a flat surface on to which the painted eye artwork is laid. This flat-sided sphere is then placed in a mould which is filled with clear resin. When set, this gives the whole eyeball a thin transparent skin, and fills out its flattened side to a normal curve. The clear dome of set resin over the eye artwork also acts like a magnifying glass, making the flat design look three-dimensional, especially after the eye has been polished.
