Chapter One
“Shit!” Max slammed his beer onto the bar creating a big party foul with the amber liquid sloshing out of the bottle. Couldn’t he have a moment to enjoy his drink? Was that asking too much? It must be, because the fates were not on his side. That damn reporter was nosing around again. She’d been dogging his tail for weeks. Every turn he made, she seemed to be there. Normally he would like the attention because of how hot she looked with her short brown, almost black, hair and her dark brown eyes that were starting to haunt his dreams, but she wasn’t after him for a quick fuck. She wanted something more, a story on him and his pack. Not happening, no matter how cute she looked. It seemed as if the reporter had shown up the night Bella had told him to watch out for the brunette at the end of the bar. And that evil wink Bella had given him? Max sure hoped the brunette Bella spoke of didn’t turn out to be this reporter, but that twinkle in Bella’s eyes told him not to overlook the possibility. And, just his luck, the woman sauntered his way and it happened again, that feeling deep in his chest like his heart was going to be ripped out. Every fucking time she got close, he would feel these urges he didn’t want to think about. Fuck. It wasn’t his night. “Why can’t you get the hint? Fuck off—I’m not going to tell you anything,” Max said as the woman settled onto the stool next to him. He took a swig of his beer, hoping she would get the hint and leave. Usually he left before she got this close, but he wanted to confront her and get it over with because this shit tired him no end and he hated being chased out of his favourite bar. “And hello to you as well, Maxwell. No niceties from you, I see—straight to the heart of the matter. Not that I’m surprised. Maybe you’ll let me introduce myself this time before you run out of here again with your tail between your legs. Oops, did I say that out loud?” She winked at him. “My name is Valerie, by the way, Valerie Thomas. You’re not scared of little ole me, are you?” Valerie ended with a grin. She held out her hand, obviously expecting him to do the polite thing and respond in kind with a handshake. She waited with a smile on her face, but Max just looked at her hand

until she pulled it back. Taking her hand in his would not be happening, with the hunger rolling through him. And when had she learnt his name? Fuck, and had she just said Valerie? He did a double take. Fuck, fuck, fuck. That was the name his dad had whispered through his head before he died. Max took a closer look. He’d never really studied her before now, but damned if she didn’t look like the vision from his father. If he touched her, especially now, he might just throw her down on the floor and be done with it. Taking a deep breath around her seemed like a bad idea. Her scent wrapped around and through him. Damn town should learn how to shut up. If he found out who’d talked— “Look, I just want a little information on your family. It’s a little odd having all of you live in that house. You are all related, right? And what happened there a few weeks ago? Is it some kind of cult? What can you tell me about Russ Masters? Who—” “Enough!” Max roared. Max just managed to hide his grin when Valerie jumped at his loud command. Maybe he could have a little fun. Not going to happen. She is too dangerous. He couldn’t let his libido take charge on this one. “Can’t you get the hint? I’ve never responded to you before now. Showed no fucking interest and left before we could talk. So let me say this flat out so you can understand. Stop with the questions. I’m not going to answer them. No one around here will. Let me sit here and drink in peace. Just shut up!” Max said in a harsh voice, anything to get her away from him. “I’m not leaving, Max. If you don’t answer my questions, someone will, no matter what you say. I just wanted a little inside perspective before I write my article. I don’t want it to be one-sided, but if you won’t talk and I can’t get anyone else from your family to speak to me, then I’ll run the story as-is.” “Are you still talking? I don’t give a flying fuck what you write, just leave me and my family alone.” Max threw some money on the bar and started for the door, but he could feel her behind him. He hoped like hell she wouldn’t follow. He could only hold on to his wolf for so long, and it wanted a piece of the reporter.

Max didn’t care about the story. The pack had lived through worse, and if Russ wanted to ignore it, then he would too. Max had almost reached his car when a terrified scream echoed around him. God damn it, this really isn’t my night. He turned and ran towards the sound. He didn’t expect the sight before him and stumbled to a stop in shock. A giant leopard in the parking lot would do it. Valerie was cornered as the leopard stalked her. He only knew of one were-leopard around here and Zareb didn’t leave the house unless forced to, plus Max didn’t think the other shifter would be assaulting someone. ‘Fuck’ didn’t even begin to describe the feeling flowing through Max’s body. He didn’t like secrets and somebody had one. Max didn’t stop to think. He changed into his wolf form and charged the leopard before it could reach the girl. The two collided in mid leap. Max went straight for the leopard’s throat with a growl. The leopard hadn’t expected the attack, so Max had a clear shot and bit down hard, tasting blood. The leopard hissed as it tried to shake Max off, but Max held on tightly. Letting go wasn’t an option unless forced. The leopard tried to strike Max with his claws, hoping to loosen his grip. The animal got in one good strike before making Max release him. Max continued to growl and advance on the animal. The leopard hissed once more, turned around and ran into the night. Max didn’t give chase. He wanted to make sure the woman was okay then he was going back to the house to report in. Someone was going to tell him why there appeared to be a leopard on the loose in town. After Max had shifted back, he went in search of Valerie, but her scent ended at the parking lot. At least she had fled instead of sticking around for a story. She wasn’t completely stupid. Now deaf was another issue, at least when it came to his wishes. He halfexpected to see her standing on the side lines taking notes. He was glad he didn’t have to deal with her any more tonight—he had to get back to the pack house to talk to Zareb and Russ. Someone had some explaining to do.
Max made it back to the compound in record time. He slammed on his brakes, hardly waiting for the vehicle to stop before jumping out and storming to the front door, heading straight into Russ’ office without knocking. “What the fuck is going on here?” he raged

“Excuse me?” Russ’ cultured voice had an edge to it. The two men stared each other in the eyes until Max had the overwhelming urge to look away. He shifted his gaze to the floor and slightly bowed his head. Russ didn’t enforce his alpha power often, but when he did everyone paid attention. “Now, what is it you wanted?” Russ tented his fingers together and tapped his lips, waiting for a response. Russ’ voice was soft, but Max knew his alpha was pissed off at the interruption. “I was at the bar tonight, Russ. I saw a big cat attack that reporter shadowing me.” Max waited for his alpha to respond, but they were interrupted by a blood-curdling scream coming from the front room. What was it with women and screaming tonight? He could do without it. “Nooooooo!” Max arrived in the dining room seconds before Russ to find Bella on the floor clutching her head. That was never a good sign. The last time, the shit had hit the fan, and with a reporter on his ass this couldn’t be good. He just hoped Russ didn’t make him do damage control. The further he stayed away from Valerie the better. “Bella,” Russ soothed. “Where is David? Someone get her mate.” It took a couple of minutes, but Bella was finally able to sit up. David had arrived and cradled her in his lap with a growl. The mating was still new, so Russ and Max backed off. “Valerie,” Bella whispered. “What did you say?” Max seethed. No way. “You need to help her, Max. If you don’t she’ll die and we are in big trouble,” Bella pleaded with him. “She’s a fucking reporter who wants a damn story. What the hell am I supposed to do with her? Give her the big hairy exclusive? Somehow I don’t think the local news is ready for a wolf coming-out party.” “Stop with the smartass comments. Go find her and protect her. If you can, talk her into coming back here.” “Somehow I don’t think that will be the problem. That might come when she doesn’t understand ‘off the record’. And we have bigger problems here. A leopard attacked Valerie tonight. In our territory. I don’t think Zareb is going around scaring the town folk.” “Did I hear someone say leopard?” Zareb walked into the room.

“That’s right, big guy. You scaring off nosy reporters?” Max sneered. Russ slapped the back of his head. “What did I say about being a smartass? Listen to what Zareb has to say. It will be important.” “We need to get Valerie here and then I will tell you all a little story. One that I should have shared earlier, but I didn’t think things would come crashing down this soon. I thought we had time. It appears we do not,” Zareb stated and left the room. For some reason, that calmed Max down. He didn’t know if it was Zareb’s voice or the fact that the man seemed so in control of the situation. “You heard Zareb. Go find her. And hurry, Max.” Bella squeezed his hand. Max grumbled, but did what he was told. The one thing he really didn’t want to do. Find a reporter.
**** Dmitri thought luck had shifted his way with the lovely Valerie falling right into his hands. It was brilliant beyond words and it helped that Max wanted nothing to do with her. He wanted to act and kill her before the connection between Max and her could grow. He wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice. He would take care of this one on his own. Bastian had been an error on his part. The crazy man had his own agenda in killing off the beast who’d changed his daughter into a wolf. He had thought by changing Bastian’s allegiance he could put a stop to what fate had in store for him and his children. Bastian had pushed too fast to end the whole pack. Not that Dmitri had to worry about him anymore. Bastian had died in his quest to rid the world of shifters. Now it was time for Dmitri to take matters into his own hands. Dmitri hadn’t come this far to be killed by some insignificant wolves. He had been bred for greatness and wouldn’t be overshadowed by the bastards of his ancestors. They had muddied the waters, and he planned on fixing it once and for all. He just wished Zareb was on his side in this fight. The two of them would have been invincible, but he had chosen the wrong side, the side of their parents or the great ancients as they were now known, and he would pay for that mistake.

Then that mutt had interfered. He should have known one of Zareb’s do-gooders would step up to the plate. Didn’t they know how insignificant they were? None of them would be here if it wasn’t for that damned vessel. “Kill, kill, kill, kill.” The voice was getting worse. It had started over a decade ago and Dmitri hadn’t been able to shake it. Now he embraced it. He would kill whomever he had to. Being a shifter was supposed to be special, and now anybody could become one. His parents should have taken care of them before they got out of hand. They were all powerful, after all. But no, they had sat back and let it happen. Now shifters were a dime a dozen. Well, no more. He would be the last standing shifter. The others would die so he could start over the way it was supposed to be. Two guardian’s to protect the rest. It would come to pass. He’d seen it. Maybe he’d make a few changes. It was possible. Look what that idiot pack had managed. They were supposed to die in a fire. Had that happened? No. But he had other ways. Fun ways. And it would start with the death of Valerie Thomas.

Chapter Two
It wasn’t possible. That kept running through Valerie’s head. It had to be a trick of her imagination. She had not seen Max Rockwell shift into a wolf and attack that giant cat. And what the hell was a leopard doing in town? Valerie paced her apartment. She should be scared. She’d almost been mauled. But the only thing she could think about was Max. Big, dark haired, sexy Max. Just picturing him could make her panties damp. Being next to him was cause for a change of underwear. He oozed rough and dangerous. And when he smiled, she wanted to kiss him. Not that he smiled at her. She got the scowl. That was still sexy, but in a different kind of way. She needed to focus. Maybe meditate and call her mom, who was usually the voice of reason. Valerie sat on the couch. It was possible that shifters existed. Probable, even, what with magic being real. She had just never thought she’d see it. That could explain so much about the Master’s compound. Were they all shifters? God, what she wouldn’t give to get into that house. Think of the story she could have. But could she tell it? The world was not ready for that kind of news. That was why she kept her magic background to herself. She’d learned at an early age that a person could be okay with it, but people as a whole tended to panic. Okay. Her paper wanted a story on the fireworks that had happened out at the Master’s place. She had something she could run. Damn. She really needed to talk to the man himself to get it figured out. If they were shifters she couldn’t run what she had planned, because they wouldn’t want to draw attention. That could be bad for her too. Yes, it was time to call her mom. Maybe Joy would be home too. Her mom answered on the first ring. “Hey, baby girl. How are you?” Valerie smiled. Mom always knew it was her and she didn’t even have caller ID. “Troubled. Very troubled.” “What happened?” “Are shifters real?” Valerie bit her lip and ran her fingers through her hair. “Why would you ask that?” Her mom sounded nervous.

“I saw something I can’t explain and—” “Maybe you should talk to Joy.” “Why would I talk to her?” Joy had grown up with the family after her mom had died. That was just how the Thomas family worked. They took in strays, starting with her. Her mom sighed. “To answer your question—yes, shifters exist. Joy might have some answers you need. Just remember, everything happens for a reason. Maybe you should meditate on it. But talk to your sister first.” “Yes, ma’am. Is she there?” Now she was starting to get curious. Why would Joy have answers? “Yes. Hold on a moment.” Valerie smiled when her mom yelled for Joy. Some things never changed. “Who is it?” Joy’s muffled voice came through the phone. She didn’t hear her mom’s reply. “Hey, V. What’s up?” “Mom said I should ask you about shifters.” Valerie didn’t like the pause on the other end of the line. She got up and started pacing again. Her mind was going a mile a minute with all the possibilities. Why hadn’t she known before now? “I see. Do you remember me talking about my sperm donor?” Valerie laughed. Only Joy. “Yes, I do. But what does that have to do with shifters?” “My mom was not the only one he ‘donated’ to. I have a half brother. Only he doesn’t know about me. At least not yet. You’ve met him.” “What?” How was that possible? “Why didn’t I know this?” “I just found out when Richard died. He left me a letter. And my brother is Max—” “Of course! Rockwell! Damn. I’m so stupid. Same last name and everything! So you know—” “Well, it isn’t obvious if you aren’t thinking about it and don’t expect it. And yes, I know he is a wolf shifter. So was his mom. Apparently Richard had a thing for powerful women.” “But you and Max look nothing alike.” “We must both take after our mothers.”

“Wait, now that I think about it…” Valerie shut her eyes and pictured both Joy and Max in her mind. There it was. “You have the same eyes.” “So how did you find out that Max is a shifter? I’m sure he didn’t just show it to you out of the kindness of his heart. Most folks keep that kind of thing a secret. And hello, you’re a reporter.” “Yeah, but I’m not just any reporter. I’m a magic wielder, same as you. I know that there are some things you just don’t do a story on. Damn, I wish I could get inside that house. You could—” “No.” “But—” “I said no. You aren’t using me to get in there.” “You’re going anyway. Let me tag along.” “V! It will be awkward enough introducing myself. Who knows if Max is even aware he has a sister. I have no idea if Richard sent him a letter too.” “All right. But if you loved me—” Joy laughed. “Enough. You are not going to get me to take you. At least not the first time.” “Yes!” Valerie knew she’d wear her sister down. She stopped short of happy dancing around the room. There was a knock on the door. “Wait a second, someone’s here.” Valerie moved to the door and opened it. “I might not need that help. Gotta go.” Valerie hung up the phone. This was unexpected, but she could work with it. In front of her stood the big, beefy hunk himself. The siblings really didn’t look anything alike. If not for the eyes, you’d never be able to tell. Max was big with reddish brown hair and fair-skinned. Joy was small, with long black hair and cocoa skin. But those green orbs that peered through you like they knew all your secrets looked good on both of them. “How’d you find me?” Not the best question, but it would have to do. “Not too hard. You should tell the people at your work not to give your information to strangers,” Max all but snarled.

“I thought you wanted nothing to do with me.” Valerie cocked a brow. No need to fall easily into his hands no matter how big and strong they looked. She moistened her lips. His eyes followed her tongue. “Seems I have no choice in the matter. You’re coming with me.” He grabbed her arm. “What? Wait. No way am I just going with you.” She shook him off. “I thought you wanted a story.” Max crossed his arms over his chest. His aura was powerful. She wanted to touch it. “I do. Why don’t you come in and we’ll talk,” Valerie said, trying to compromise. While she wanted to go with him, she couldn’t give in. Not yet. If she let loose now and did what he wanted, Max would forever walk all over her, and no way was that happening. At least not in this lifetime. Max moved closer to her, but she stood her ground. God, he was hot. He leaned in and sniffed at her neck before licking it. She had to close her eyes. “What makes you think you’re safe here?” Amusement laced Max’s voice. “I know something that might interest you, and I don’t think you’d really hurt me no matter how bad-ass you try to come across. You don’t scare me.” She whispered the last words. Max drew in a deep breath. “No, but I sure as fuck make you wet.” Valerie was pressed against Max’s chest, his hard-on thick against her leg. His mouth descended on hers. It was a savage kiss meant to put her in her place, but she took over. Valerie climbed up his body until he was forced to grab her ass or they would both fall over. She wrapped herself completely around the man and moulded herself to him. One of them groaned when Valerie rocked against him. Skin. She wanted Max naked and in her bed. A spark made her stop. “What the hell was that?” Max panted. Valerie didn’t care. She yanked at his shirt and wiggled until his chest was bare. She ran her teeth around his collar bone and nipped at him, before soothing the spot with kisses. Max stopped talking and went to work on her top until her breasts rubbed against his furry chest. The sensation tickled her nipples. It wasn’t enough. She mewled and rubbed some more. More sparks shot between them. “Fuck,” Max grated out.

Yes, a fuck was just what they both needed. Valerie slid down his body and disposed of the rest of her clothes until she stood naked before him.
**** This wasn’t why Max had showed up at Valerie’s house, but at this point he didn’t care. He wanted to be inside her body in the worst way. If she’d quit with the fucking questions she might be damn near perfect. At least for a fling. He was as hard as a rock and wanted to pound into her sweet flesh. Her scent drove him abso-fucking-lutley nuts. She smelt of coconut and woman. Best smell ever. He drew more air into his lungs, filling himself with her scent. Her body was lush and full. Her breasts would spill over in his hands. He couldn’t wait to taste the buds that topped the perky mounds of flesh. Her hips looked like a perfect resting spot for his hands when they weren’t occupied by the nice firm ass he’d felt when she’d jumped him. Her pussy was covered in black hair, tiny curls, tight and shaved close. He wanted to nuzzle in. Make her come on his face. Max tore at his pants. He was over-dressed and she was starting without him. Naked, he stalked towards her and pulled her in to his body. A zap of electricity pushed them apart, followed by a loud bang as a bubble of air slammed Max against the wall. “What the fuck?” His cock wilted and he panted for breath. He looked over to see Valerie splayed against the wall with a dazed look in her eyes. Max threw his head back and howled in outrage. He moved towards her only to be stopped by some sort of field. Like the bubble of power had trapped him inside. This was not right. “Valerie? You okay?” His voice echoed like it was trapped with him. Max needed to stay calm. He cautiously moved his hand until he felt the barrier. No matter how much force he used he couldn’t break it. And he’d tried pushing with all his might. Maybe if he shifted it would work. He took a glance at the fallen woman, but she still didn’t move. His wolf wanted out and not just because he was trapped. It had scratched to the surface the minute he’d realised Valerie was injured.

His teeth lengthened and his claws came out as the shift started. He paused when a dark, inky-looking cloud came into the room. He couldn’t hold back his whimper. Whatever that fucking thing was, it wasn’t good. It smelt rank. Max curled his lips. The mass moved towards Valerie and he started charging the force field, shift forgotten in his urge to get to his mate. His mate? Fucking no! But he knew it was true. Just what he needed. Fuck this shit. “V? V! What the fuck! Valerie?” A woman ran into the room and the black blob vanished. Poof, like a puff of smoke. Max fell to the ground, as he had been mid-charge when the air field around him had collapsed. “Don’t fuckin’ touch her! Who the fuck are you and what the fuck just happened?” He growled and pushed the woman back, putting himself between her and Valerie. “Listen here, stud boy, that is my sister you’re snarling over, and I’ll be the one asking the questions, Max.” He bared his teeth and had to calm down to get his wolf to back off. It wasn’t the time. Not yet. He needed answers. “Who. Are. You?” he said through gritted teeth as he crouched to get closer to his mate. He didn’t trust anyone right now. And her sudden appearance seemed fishy, even if she did claim to be related. “This is not how I wanted to do this, but I seem to have no choice. First, put some fucking clothes on. I’ll make sure she’s okay and then we can talk.” He didn’t want to, but this person didn’t smell evil and he would feel better having some barrier between them. He grumbled under his breath the whole time. Not turning his back on the two women, he moved to put his pants on. When he was finished, Valerie still hadn’t regained consciousness. That wasn’t good. He knelt beside her and felt for a pulse. Something he should have done first. Normally he would have, but he wasn’t thinking straight. Nothing made sense anymore. Her heartbeat was strong. Thank God. He needed to get them to the compound. Whatever that fucking thing was, it wouldn’t have a chance to hurt Valerie again. Not if it took his last breath to defend her.

“Talk.” “I’m not yours to command, but you’re lucky I have something to say, wolf boy.” This wasn’t going to go well. And had she said ‘wolf’? What did she know? “Stop with the names and tell me who you are and why you’re here and what the fuck that black thing was.” Max crossed his arms over his chest as he stood guard over his mate. He closed his eyes for a second, not ready for the responsibility the situation required. “Like I said, I’m Valerie’s sister. Well, more like foster sister. I’m your biological half sister.” Her stance resembled his. Max stuck a finger in his ear and jiggled it around, sure he’d heard something wrong. Valerie moaned and all other thoughts left him as he crouched back down. Max’s gaze moved over her face, waiting for her brown eyes to open. Her lids fluttered and she looked confused. “Ow. Shit, that hurts. What—? Who—? Joy?” Valerie shook her head and grabbed it with her hands. Finally, a name. “That’s right, who, Joy? If you’re my fuckin’ sister why am I just now finding out?” Valerie looked between the two of them and Max took pity on her, pulling her up and into his arms and snatching her discarded shirt for her before settling them on her couch. Her face turned a pretty shade of pink and he almost missed what Joy said. “I just found out when dear old Dad died. Fuck, I wouldn’t have even known he’d passed if I hadn’t got the letter from his lawyer. Not that I’m bitter.” Valerie laughed and winced shortly after. “We’re leaving. Go pack.” That didn’t go over well. Both women started to protest, one talking over the other. It hurt his ears. “Enough. Valerie, go pack. Joy and I’ll wait.” “No way. What happened? That’s what I need to know. And why is Joy here? First we were about to—” She looked over at Joy and stopped. “Come on, V. You were both naked when I got here. Doesn’t take a genius. Of course you were on opposite sides of the room, so unless there is some kinky stuff I don’t know about out there, something went wrong.”

“Hell yes, something went wrong. But I’m only talking about this once. We’re going to my house.” “You mean the compound?” Valerie smiled and her eyes twinkled. “Fuck.” Max ran a hand down his face. “Yes, the compound.” He didn’t want to think of how hot she looked when she was happy. Damn it. It wasn’t his night. “No way am I going into wolf central. I’m not ready,” Joy protested again. “I don’t give a fuck how ready you might be. I’m taking my mate and we’re leaving. I suggest you get your ass in line to follow.” He tried to ignore her reference to wolves. She couldn’t know. But if she is my sister, maybe dear old Dad told her. God damn it. “Mate!” Two voices mingled together. What the fuck was wrong with him? He really wasn’t on his game. Blurting this shit out. Stupid fuckin’ wolf shit. “One time. I’m only going over this once. Get your shit together now or you’re leavin’ with nothing. Do. I. Make. Myself. Clear?” Max forced out. Valerie walked right up to him and got in his face, poking his chest with her finger. “Listen here, you growly-ass motherfucker. I may want to get to your compound, but you do not own me. Give me a good reason to follow you.” She crossed her arms over her chest. She looked cute all puffed up and angry in just a shirt that barely covered her essentials. He forced himself not to grin. “One word. Exclusive.” That should shut her up. “V. I—shit, we should go. I know I said I wasn’t ready, but something’s off. Can’t you feel it?” He didn’t know how he felt about Joy siding with him, but Max had felt the evil when the oozing black shit had trapped him. They needed to hustle. “Here is a quick low-down. I was sent here by a packmate. She had a vision. Then that thing attacked, making me think her vision is spot on. There’re people at home who can help. Probably explain it better than me.” “And what about this exclusive?” Leave it to her to focus on her work.

“Somehow I knew that’d be the only part you’d care about. After we talk, if you still want to run the story—I won’t be able to stop you. But I have a feeling you won’t be writing that piece.” Valerie nodded and left the room. “That isn’t the way to handle this situation and what the fuck are you talking about— mate? No way can you be mates. It’d be too weird. I grew up with her. You’re my brother. The world isn’t that small. And don’t think she won’t be asking you about this whole deal when she gets over the fact that she is finally getting into the compound.” “Is this really what you want to talk about, Joy? How come I’ve never heard of you? And how the fuck did you get here just in time? Something isn’t gelling here.” “What was it you said? Oh, yeah—one time. You can hear it the same time your alpha does.” “Who said anything about alpha?” “You can stop pretending right now. V and I both know you’re a shifter. And you were just talking about mates and pack. If you want to keep a secret, you probably shouldn’t use those words. At least not when dealing with magic users.” That gave him pause. It shouldn’t have because if Joy was his sister like she claimed, it wouldn’t be a stretch for her to have powers. His dad had been strong in magic. No one understood why he didn’t have any magic. Max was pure shifter. “Both of you?” Max looked in the direction Valerie had disappeared to. “I think I’ll let her answer that. I do know we have to get out of here. Fast. Whatever was here before isn’t going to stay gone long. I surprised it.” “What the fuck was it?” “No clue. Maybe your pack has the answers. You said you have a seer?” Max was getting uncomfortable with the questions. What the fuck did he know? Not a damn thing. He was muscle. That was it. He wasn’t the brains or the pretty boy—he fought. Take it or leave it. Fuck. “I’m ready.” Valerie hurried out of her room. She had a small bag over her shoulder and she was dressed in black jeans and a creamy white sweater. Max thought she looked better naked. His wolf struggled to the surface, wanting to mate. He pushed it down. Now was not the time. “Let’s go. They’re expecting us.”

“Pretty sure of yourself there, wolf boy.” Joy winked at Valerie. He almost missed it. Valerie laughed. This was a side he’d never seen. Usually when he dodged her in the bar she was all business. She was relaxed with her sister. Sister? That brought up another question. “How is it possible that the two of you’re sisters?” Max ignored Joy’s previous statement. “Let’s just call it fate.” Joy walked out of the door. “I don’t like all this fate bullshit. Something’s going on here, and I’m going to find out what.” Max stormed out of the apartment. It was time someone started talking.

Chapter Three
Valerie didn’t know if she was more excited or nervous. On one hand, she was going to get the story she wanted. Didn’t matter if she couldn’t report the information. She would be in the know. That part excited her. Almost as much as naked mattress-dancing with Max. Almost. She kept flashing back to the moment right before she’d lost consciousness. A spark of electricity had shocked through her body. Max’s aura had flared a clear red, then nothing. She must have passed out because the next thing she knew, Joy was there too, talking about something being off. The only thing Valerie had felt was sexual frustration. Well, and the zaps she’d experienced when she was close to Max. But that hadn’t felt wrong. The closer they got, the more she struggled with her thoughts. That one word kept repeating itself. ‘Mate’. Sounded nothing like ‘let’s be friends and fuck’. She didn’t do relationships. Valerie was more of a serial dater. She didn’t need a man in her life. “Calm down and stop fidgeting.” Joy tugged her hair. “I’m calm. Maybe.” Valerie bit her lip and glanced over at Max. He looked focussed on driving. “No you aren’t. I can hear you thinking from back here.” “He said ‘mate’, Joy,” she whispered in the hope Max wouldn’t hear. “Oh, you’re just now getting to that?” Joy snickered. She sneaked another peek at Max. He still appeared to be in his own world. “No. Well, yes. He said exclusive. What was I supposed to do?” She shrugged. “It kinda clouded any other thoughts. But mates—that’s big, isn’t it? How does he know?” Valerie looked over again. “It must be a shifter thing. I don’t know.” Joy wasn’t any help. “It is a shifter thing. Has to do with smell.” Shit. Of course he’d heard. “How?” Valerie’s thoughts raced.

“I can’t explain it. It’s like… Hell, I don’t know. Home. It smells like something you never want to end and you want to eat up with a spoon. Like warm fires on a cold day. Yeah, like that.” That was the most in-depth Valerie had ever heard Max get. It made her girly parts tingle. In a ‘let’s get naked and screw’ way. She smelt like home to him? How romantic was that? “What does that smell like? Home?” “Do you ever stop with the questions?” “No. Guess you’ll have to get used to it.” “Fine. Whatever. Coconuts.” “What?” “You smell like coconuts and some scent that can just be described as Valerie. It’s your very essence.” “Kind of like your aura. It’s just who you are.” “I don’t know. If you say so. I’m not good at explaining this shit. You’ll have to ask someone else.” Valerie settled into her seat. She wondered if there was someone at the pack house who could explain things. “Wha—?” she began. “No more.” Max held up a hand. “We’re almost there. You can ask Russ. Or maybe Bella. I’m the brawn, not the brains.” “Don’t,” Valerie said with a glare. “Don’t what?” Max asked. “Belittle yourself. You’re plenty smart. So you don’t know a few things about pack stuff. Nothing wrong with that. Who says you have to know it all?” “Defending the beastie. Now, isn’t this interesting?” Joy snickered from the back seat. “Shut up, Joy.” “She does have a point, mate.” “You shut it, too. Maybe this can be a quiet ride.” Valerie crossed her arms over her chest and sulked.

Silence settled over the car. Not much better than the teasing, but they had to almost be there. A few minutes later Max pulled off the main road onto what looked like a path. Valerie had no idea how he could even see to drive. “Where’re you going?” Valerie couldn’t stand it. She was bursting with questions and this was the last straw. It looked all cloak and dagger. “I thought you wanted silent time?” Max smirked. “Don’t push it, “she forced out through gritted teeth. Valerie might be patient, but Max was testing her resolve. He had been since the first time she’d tried to meet the man. “Do you really think the pack house would be out in the open? We like our privacy for when we change. Don’t want nosy”—he glared at Valerie—“People to stumble onto us at the wrong time. This keeps most people out.” Valerie drew in a deep breath when the mansion came into view. Because that was the only thing she could call it. The house was huge. It looked like it came straight out of Gone with the Wind. The drive went right up to the door, where big steps led to the entrance. Grand pillars enclosed the porch. Rose bushes dotted the yard and wrapped along the side of the house. Big, tall trees as far as the eye could see. And if she wasn’t mistaken, the back looked like an enchanted forest. She wondered if it might be. God, she would love to explore the grounds. “Head in the game, V,” Joy whispered. “What?” Valerie was still distracted by the house. “We’re about to meet your mate’s alpha. Our lives are going to change, right here, right now.” “What do you know?” “I know that this here is the turning point in our lives. Everything from here on out will be new, and I have to say I’m a little scared. I’m glad you’re here with me. Can’t you feel it in the air? Destiny and fate are at hand. Are you ready?” “Cryptic much? You’ve been taking lessons from Mom. I thought I was. But now—I’m not so sure.” The car came to a stop and Valerie gulped. Of course now that Joy had said something she could feel a change in the air. Max didn’t wait for them—he stormed up the stairs. Valerie was slow to get out of the car. She wanted to run headlong into the fray, but knew caution was warranted. Especially if Joy was being all Ms Cleo.

The car door shutting brought Valerie out of her thoughts. She held out a hand and Joy took it. Together they made their way up the steps to face their destiny.
**** Max rushed into the house. He had to get away from Valerie. He wanted to hold her down and fuck her. All the talk about mates had him ready to claim her and now wasn’t the time. His wolf would just have to wait. Answers. That was what he wanted. And only one man had them. He should’ve felt bad about leaving the sisters outside, but he wanted to reach the office before Valerie got there to question Russ. He’d never get a word in if he didn’t start first. How much did Russ really know? Hell, he’d sent David out to find help and the man had come back with a mate, and it looked like the Alpha had done the same fucking thing to him. There was more going on here. And he wouldn’t sit by and just let it happen to him. He was a take-charge kind of guy. It was bad enough that he couldn’t pick his own mate thanks to his wolf genes, but he could damn well take care of the other obstacles in his path. “Russ. Valerie and our sister are here.” God, that sounded weird to say. He had a sister and he didn’t know how he felt about it. He really hadn’t had a lot of time to process it. “Did you say sister? Wait. Our—? What is going on here, Max? You were supposed to bring Valerie here for safe-keeping. No one said anything about another woman.” “That’s my question, Russ. What the fuck’s going on? I go to get Valerie, find out she’s my mate, get attacked by some fucking black blob thing and find out I have a long-lost sister who just so happens to be Valerie’s foster sister. What. The. Fuck?” Max paced the length of the room. Russ didn’t have time to answer. A noise at the door made both men look over. “I found our guests by the front door. Kind of rude there, buddy.” David ushered Joy and Valerie into the office. “I don’t have time for your shit, Sparky.” Max continued his pacing. He had to get a handle on things. He really needed a good fight, but now wasn’t the time. “Whose shit? I’m helping you out here, man. Bella will be down in a second.” David turned and left.

“I’m Valerie and this is my sister Joy.” Valerie walked past him towards the desk Russ was behind. Max didn’t realise he was growling until Russ was in his face. “Calm the fuck down,” Russ growled right back. Max couldn’t decide between a growl and a whimper, so it came out somewhere between the two. He bared his neck to Russ, showing his submission to his Alpha. “What just happened?” Valerie whispered. “You mate. Max want. No one else touch,” Joy said in her best caveman impersonation. That broke the tension. Max huffed out a laugh. “Valerie, why don’t you go stand by Max? Or have a seat. I believe you all have some questions, but I’ll start with one of my own.” Russ walked back to his chair and sat down. “Just who are you, Joy? I’ve never heard of you and didn’t know Max had a sister.” Russ steepled his fingers together. “No one knew but our dad. I found out after he died. I got a letter from his lawyer.” Joy shrugged. “You look nothing alike. You understand my doubts? We’re getting ready for something big and I won’t take any chances with my pack.” Russ tapped his digits against his mouth. “I completely understand, but you know how you can make sure? Smell me.” Max guided Valerie to the couch. He didn’t want to miss this show. “I don’t think I understand what’s happening.” Valerie sounded confused. “Russ’s just making sure Joy is who she says she is. Not a bad idea. I should have thought of it earlier.” “By smelling her?” Valerie cocked a brow. “Can you stop with the questions for two seconds and just watch?” Max was exasperated. Russ moved to where Joy stood. He got in really close and drew in a deep breath. He got so close his nose touched Joy’s neck. The next thing Max saw was Russ being hurled across the room and bouncing off the wall. Max jumped to his feet, but backed down when he got a look at Zareb. The man had appeared from nowhere and the look on his face was pure anger. Russ scrambled off the wall and went to charge Zareb.

“Stop.” Joy had both hands outstretched as she stood between the two men. Light pulsed from each palm, holding the men in place. “What the fuck was that?” Valerie moved off the couch and inched closer to Joy. Max didn’t move. He kept his eyes on Valerie to make sure she wasn’t going to get caught up in the cross fire. Joy still had her hands raised, somehow magically keeping the two men separate. Max had never seen anything like it. He wasn’t used to magic users. Not really. His father had stayed away from him and he hadn’t seen Bella in action. Fuck, he didn’t even know Zareb was magical. “It’s okay, Joy. You can release us now.” Russ sounded calm, but Max didn’t know if he would explode again. “Yes, my seil. I am calm. Please release us.” Zareb had his Zen look in place. Max could still feel the tension in the air and wondered how this would play out. Were things going crazy? “Care to explain yourself, Zareb?” Russ smoothed down his shirt. Zareb gave a shake of his head. “Not at this time. I must leave. I can not be here right now. I will be in touch.” He turned to leave. “Things are coming to a head quick. Is it really a good time to be running off?” Russ questioned. Joy was looking between the two men and finally lowered her arms and moved out of the way. She kept looking at Zareb, but Zareb wouldn’t even glance her way. His chest was moving fast, like he couldn’t catch his breath. “I will be in touch. I have some things to take care of.” “Is that why you came charging in here? You should probably hear what Max has to say before you go. It could be important.” “Yes. I will listen, but I really can not stay. I will explain myself.” Zareb glanced at Joy and quickly looked away again. “But I can not right now. I need to go into the woods and communicate with the Ancients.” “Then you need to hear what happened today. Maybe they‘ll give you answers,” Max finally broke in. “Proceed,” Zareb commanded.

Russ just cocked a brow and went back to his desk like the altercation had never happened. There was a dynamic going on between the two men that Max wasn’t privy to. Things just kept getting more fucked up by the minute. “Yes, Max, please tell us what happened. Try not to leave anything out,” Russ finally agreed. Joy moved away from Zareb to the other side of the room. Zareb stayed where he was, in front of Russ’ desk. Valerie went to Joy and stayed close. Max decided sitting wasn’t helping. He got up and began walking the room. “Valerie and I were separated by a weird force field. She was thrown against the wall,” he growled, and had to calm himself before he continued. Just imagining her hurt was enough to bring out his wolf. “She was knocked unconscious. I wasn’t. I saw this black ball of—energy, I guess. It was headed for Valerie. I tried to get out of my bubble, but nothing was working. Then she walked in.” Max gestured to Joy. “When she got there the energy field left. That’s when I found out that Joy and Valerie were foster sisters and Joy is my half sister.” At that Max looked at Russ. His alpha nodded. “And it seems that claim is correct. I have no idea why my bastard of a father never told me. But there you have it. Now we’re here. So what now?” Max continued to pace, but did see that Zareb had inched closer to Joy before he caught himself. Valerie looked okay, just hugged her sister closer. “This had to be what my vision was about.” Bella entered the room. “I would have to agree, Bella. Max, can you give us more detail on this black energy?” Russ wanted to know. “It was just a big black blob. It looked inky, almost like tar, but it shimmered some. The thing floated through the air. It felt menacing. Full of hate, and it looked intent on reaching Valerie.” Max drew closer to his mate. He needed to touch her. To reassure himself she was really all right and there with him. Valerie actually put out a hand and he grabbed it like a lifeline. “What about you, Joy? Max said you walked in on this thing. What were your impressions of it?” Russ questioned. Max didn’t think she was going to talk and Zareb wasn’t saying anything. Not too unusual for the cat shifter. He mostly listened. But Max was beginning to think there was more behind the quiet man.

“I would have to say that Max is spot-on in his description. I got the same feeling when I walked into the room. When I entered the entity seemed surprised and just—disappeared. I know I have some powerful mojo, but not enough to scare away something like this. Unless they could sense my magic.” “It is not your magic. It is who you are,” Zareb finally spoke. “I don’t understand. Who she is? That thing was after Valerie. Not Joy. And certainly not me. I was right there for the picking. And if it was because of who Joy is, wouldn’t it have sought me out? We have the same blood running through our veins.” “It is not who your father was that caused the creature to leave. It is who Joy is.” Zareb kept getting more cryptic. “This is worse than I thought. There is much I have not told you. More you need to know. Kak!” Zareb slammed his hand against the wall. “I must leave.” He stormed from the room. “Who is he?” Joy asked. Russ didn’t answer—he just left the room on the heels of Zareb. “That helped. Not!” Valerie stated. “Zareb will tell us when he’s ready. It seems we have some things to prepare. Joy, I would love to talk to you a bit after you’re settled. I’m new to magic and it would be nice to talk to someone who has more experience.” Bella’s voice was calm and sure, like always. Max had almost forgotten she was there. “Fuck.” Max released Valerie’s hand and ran his through his hair, more frustrated now than before. “All of this and still no answers. What’s with keeping us in the dark? Damn it. How’re we supposed to prepare if we know nothing? You can’t fight what you don’t know and obviously this”—he waved his hand around—“has something to do with this big fight coming. Do you think it was Dmitri’s doing?” Max posed the question to Bella. “It wasn’t Dmitri.” Russ walked back into the room. “Man, I have to tell you I’m getting fed up with being in the dark. I’m supposed to help protect the pack, but all these secrets are getting to be too much. Someone has to talk to me. Fill me in. I wasn’t there for the big show-down the first time. I don’t want that to happen again. Especially now that my mate and sister are involved. I have more stake in this. Talk to me!” He knew his agitation bled through into his tone and he was talking to his alpha, but it couldn’t be helped. Not this time.

“I know you’re frustrated, Max, but I can’t tell you what I don’t know. This is some big test from the Ancients. I don’t know if this entity is a part of that or not. Zareb did tell me that Dmitri is not behind this latest attack. He seemed pretty sure of that.” “He seemed pretty sure he was going to kill you too. What was with that?” Max interrupted. Russ looked at Joy then back at Max. “That has nothing to do with the matter at hand. Let me continue. What was sent to you was a creature from the Vessel. I don’t know more than that.” Russ held up a hand when Max tried to interrupt. “Zareb promised to gather us together to explain when he gets back from his spirit quest.” “Zareb will? I thought you were the alpha here?” Max questioned. He stood down at Russ’ stare. He needed to remember his place before Russ kicked his ass, but he was overwhelmed with things he’d never felt before. “I am. Zareb is—more. He is the oldest shifter I have ever met and he has a connection with the Ancients. I’m pretty sure he is one of the original protectors. He hasn’t confirmed my beliefs. But I think Zareb and Dmitri are the two who are spoken of in our stories.” A gasp from Joy made Russ pause. “It can’t be.” Joy looked towards the door. Bella led Joy to the couch. Valerie moved to follow, but Max pulled her close. He didn’t want to stop touching her in some way. “What?” Valerie wanted to know. “The prophecy,” was all Joy said before she collapsed.

Chapter Four
Valerie rushed to her sister’s side. She almost lost an arm to Max’s grip but managed to untangle herself from him. She had no idea what Joy was talking about. She had never heard of any prophecy. “I’m going to go get David. I think he might need to hear this, too. I wish Zareb hadn’t left.” Bella walked out of the room. “What is going on?” Valerie was so confused. First that beautiful black god had attacked the alpha guy, then all of this talk of ancient things and vessels. She was so lost, and she hated feeling like she was behind the curve. And Joy had started to act weird when that Zareb guy had shown up. Valerie had never seen Joy use such powerful magic, and they had basically grown up practicing together. Joy was starting to come round. Max and Russ huddled behind Valerie. She took Joy’s hand. “Come on, Joy, you can’t say shit like that and go all lights out.” Valerie patted Joy’s face. “Stop. Sorry. I think the magic I used earlier was too much. That’s all.” Joy sat up straighter. “Bullshit. Think who you’re talking to here, Joy.” Valerie glared. A noise at the door made her look up. Were there any ugly people here? That Amazon goddess with long red hair had brought in the dark-haired man from earlier. Max had called him Sparky. What an odd name. “Is Sparky David?” Valerie looked back at Max. A rich laugh filled the air, making Valerie smile for the first time in a while. She could get used to that sound coming from Max. He laughed without inhibition. “David is my mate. And yes, Max does call him Sparky.” Bella giggled. “It isn’t funny,” David said, but he too was smiling. “Enough, children. I believe Joy said something about a prophecy,” Russ interrupted. “I thought we had more time before the shit hit the fan,” David exclaimed. “We never have as much time as we think. Let Joy talk,” Russ stated.

“Can we give her a little air here? Ya’ll are huddled around her like she’s dinner or something. Back off.” Valerie was getting a little claustrophobic. Too many bodies too close together. “Thanks, V.” Joy squeezed her hand. “Any time.” She squeezed back. “And why don’t I know anything about this prophecy? Mom never said anything.” “No, but my mom did. I heard it from the time I was a small child. My mother loved to tell me the story. I didn’t know it was a prophecy until years later. It sounded like a fairy tale, if you must know. There will be a dark, tall god of a man who will storm into the princess’ world when she least expects it. Not with a whimper but with a force like none she has seen. He will be powerful and good. His way is the light and it’s the princess who must choose to take his hand or the world will shatter and evil will overcome. Mom prettied it up for me like a bedtime story.” “Princess?” Valerie questioned. “It has to do with our dad’s clan. My mother ran from him and hid with our foster mother. Not that Dad couldn’t have found me. I’ll never understand why he let me stay with your family. Or why the rest of his family didn’t come looking for me.” Joy looked over at Max. Valerie wondered if she was trying to gauge his reaction to the news. Because if Joy was a princess, that would make Max a—and there it was. She didn’t have long to wait for Max’s response. “What? You’re trying to tell me that our dad was a king? If that was the case, why was he working for Sebastian at the end?” “That, I couldn’t tell you. He wasn’t the king, but a prince of the clan. Our grandfather’s brother was the king, with no children. I don’t know a whole lot about that part of our family. My mom never talked about it. Who knows why things happened like they did, but they were supposed to. I was fated to learn my craft at Catherine’s feet. To be a part of Valerie’s life. That in turn brought me here.” Joy looked at Max. Valerie turned to see what he thought about all this, but his face was blank of all emotion. Nothing showed through. His aura had gone from muddied red to bright lemon yellow. She didn’t like to see him under such a struggle. Bella interrupted her train of thought. “What about Valerie’s mom?”

Valerie didn’t like the turn the conversation was taking. This wasn’t supposed to be about her. It was supposed to be about shifters and what happened here at this compound. When had it turned so personal? “Let’s not go there. I don’t know who my real mom was. Catherine is my mother. And she has nothing to do with this.” “V—” “Don’t ‘V’ me. I know I wanted some big story, but this is too close to home. I need out of here. Now.” Valerie had no idea where she was headed, but she couldn’t breathe in the house. She stumbled to the front door and made it down the steps before she noticed Max was right there with her. “I’m not letting you go that easily.” Max grabbed her arm, but she shook him off and continued walking. He moved in front of her and walked backwards. She tried to ignore him, but his presence was so large. “What? Now you want me around. Is this some more shifter crap? If it is, why don’t you go back inside? First you don’t want anything to do with me and then you’re ready to naked mattress-dance. Excuse a girl for getting confused.” She huffed. “You weren’t so confused back at your place.” Valerie wanted to wipe the smirk off Max’s face. He was so infuriating. “That was sex, pure and simple. Nothing more. Sure, I’m attracted to you, but mates? Come on. Me and you? Do you really think that would work? I annoy you with my very existence.” “That’s not true and unfair. I was attracted to you before all of this. I stayed away because I couldn’t answer your questions. How was I to know you knew about magic and were part of our world?” “Not really. I had no idea about shifters. It seems I had no idea about a lot of things. I feel so stupid. And stop being so freaking nice. I liked you better when you growled.” Valerie stopped walking and crossed her arms over her chest. Max invaded her personal space and nuzzled her neck, with a growl. She tried to stop the giggle, but couldn’t help herself. “Stop.” She pushed him away. “I’m being serious. All I wanted was a story. What I got? Whole different ball game. Now we’re talking prophecies and mating and family. I can’t do…” Valerie threw her hands in the air. “This.”

“Let’s take things one at a time. You know what I’d like to talk about? Mating.” Max rushed her and put his shoulder under her stomach and stood, holding her in a fireman’s carry. “What the fuck? Max, put me down.” “Not going to happen. You wanted naked dancing. We’re having it. Now. I’ve been hard for you since your apartment. If it weren’t for that…whatever it was, we’d have already fucked. I’m tired of waiting.” “We are not having sex in the woods,” Valerie declared. She saw the path he was taking and it didn’t look like he was heading for the house. “Of course not. At least not yet.” “Not yet, what does that mean? Max? Answer me, damn it.” He just laughed. She bit his back and in response he slapped her ass. “You like it rough, huh? I can accommodate that.” “Now, Max. I’m a fluffy bunny. None of that for me, thank you very much.” “Oh, a bunny. Sounds yummy.” “You are such a wolf.” “The better to eat you, my dear.” Max nipped at her ass. Valerie laughed. She felt more relaxed than she had in hours. What was it about Max that made her crave him? It could be the safety he emitted. Or the red aura that always seemed to surround him. Even him calling her ‘home’. But she didn’t want a relationship, and he was talking mates. No way could she be a mate to someone. What did that even mean, anyway? Marriage? Kids? “You’re thinking too hard. Stop,” Max commanded. She shook her head and started pulling up his shirt. She got it under her chin and licked Max’s back. Putting her hands to good use, she wiggled them under his jeans and squeezed his ass. Valerie wished she was down a little further. She’d love to sink her teeth into his nice, round butt. Okay, so maybe she did like it a tiny bit rough. She’d never wanted to bite someone before. “Hurry, Max. I want to feel your naked body on top of me.” Max growled and picked up the pace. He started caressing her ass. God, she wanted to be naked. Valerie thought they passed someone, but she couldn’t be sure. She did know there were more stairs, then they were in a room. Max threw her onto the bed. Valerie scrambled

backwards and ripped off her clothes. She closed her eyes and focussed on a bright light in her mind. She let it grow and surround her until the whole room flooded with colour and a force snapped into place. “What the hell was that?” Max looked around the room. Valerie wasn’t sure what he saw. It wasn’t like the light was real. Just something that helped her focus her magic. “I’m making sure we have no interruptions this time, Max Rockwell. Now finish getting naked and bring that hot ass over here.” “Magic?” Max reached out around him. “You can’t feel it that way. What are you looking for? Hurry up.” “I can—I don’t know. I can’t really explain it, but I feel it. Not physically, but I know you just did something. I’ve never had that experience before. Not even when we were fighting Sebastian. Weird.” Max shrugged and finished undressing. That’s what she was talking about. His hard body was uncovered inch by beautiful inch. She wanted to lick him from head to toe. He was so big and muscular. Valerie hadn’t had a chance to really look at him back at her apartment. Things went so fast and then she’d been knocked out. Damn, he was big everywhere. Valerie wet her lips when his pants dropped..She crawled down to the end of the bed, eye level with his cock. She took a taste of the tip. Intoxicating. Valerie sucked on the head of his dick and didn’t touch him anywhere else. She shivered when he cupped her breast and plucked at her nipple. She felt the pull in her pussy. She’d never been this crazed over anyone before. She wanted to feel Max’s thick cock between her thighs, plunging in deep. But she also wanted to savour the moment. Valerie let her hands wandered over Max’s body. There wasn’t an ounce of fat on the man. He was hard in all the right places. Valerie kneaded the firm flesh of his ass and sucked Max in deep until she could feel him at the back of her throat. He bucked against her and she swallowed. “Oh, fuck. Whatever it is you’re doing, you’d better stop if you want me to fuck you,” Max groaned.

She released his dick and licked her way to his balls and then went farther to nibble on his perineum and soothe it with her tongue. Max yanked her up and tipped her onto the bed, her back flat as his weight settled over her. God, he felt so good. Valerie opened her legs and felt his cock move against her. All she wanted was for it to be inside her. “Fuck me, Max.” He was panting above her, but stopped all movement. “Can’t—” “What do you mean, can’t?” Valerie wiggled her hips, but he reached down to stop her. “If you want to be mated right now then keep going. I’m trying—fuck, I want to bite you so bad right now it isn’t even funny, Valerie. Please, for the love of all that is holy, don’t fucking move.” “I don’t understand.” Valerie tried to still her movement, but it was hard. She licked at his jaw and ran her hands over his back. “My wolf is close to the surface and it wants you to be mine.” “Oh god, I don’t care, just fuck me.” “Valerie, if I mark you and let my wolf take control, there is no turning back. Let me calm down. I don’t want you to regret—” “Fuck. Me. Bite. Me. I don’t care. Just do something. Please.” Valerie squirmed against Max, her body on fire. At this point she didn’t care about mates. Max growled and started mumbling something. She thought she caught the words ‘mine’ and ‘body’ and ‘soul’ and something, but she couldn’t concentrate because he kept biting her. It was heaven. Who’d have thought she would love the feel of his teeth sinking into her skin? She almost came when he pierced her skin close to her pussy. It zinged through her whole body. She was vibrating and sparks were flying. The electricity from before was back, but it didn’t stop Max. Her body throbbed to life and an orgasm rippled through her when Max slid into her to the hilt and said something about forever more. “Oh God, Max. Uh…uh…oh…fuck. Max!” Her body was on fire and glowed a bright white. Electricity flowed between them, but the tingling sensation only intensified her orgasm. She couldn’t stop coming as Max thrust inside her again and again. “Can’t. Have to. Valerie. Fuck.” Max yelled.

Valerie could feel his cum inside her. It was hot, and Max pulsed with his release. Her breathing started to normalise when she realised something wasn’t right. She opened her eyes, not sure when she’d closed them, to find them floating a few inches above the bed. And like in a cartoon, as soon as she recognised the situation she fell to the bed, still wrapped around Max. “Umph. What the hell?” Max rolled off her and cuddled her to his side. “Later. Let’s talk later. Sleep.” Max’s breath evened out. Valerie followed close behind, trying to remember that she’d have to ask if that electricity was part of mating. Wolves are weird. She drifted into slumber with visions of her and Max running through a field, and she didn’t even wonder why they were in wolf form.

Chapter Five
“No. This can’t be happening again. Why am I thwarted at every turn?” Dmitri paced his little room. Max and Valerie had mated. Everyone in the magical community had felt the energy. Max’s magic had been unleashed at the hands of his mate. Things were not going as planned and the Vessel wasn’t happy. It wasn’t his fault that damn creature they’d sent couldn’t do its job. He had to think of a new plan. Something to flush out the couple and get rid of them for good. He knew Bella had interfered. The slut always got in the way. Damn Sebastian for not finishing the job. And to make matters worse, something was up with Zareb. Dmitri and Zareb shared a bond. One stronger than either of them had known centuries ago. “Stay out of my head, brother.” “You have no right to call me that any more, Djimon. Unless you stop this and come home. We can make this right.” “Never. And you will not call me that name. I’m Dmitri now, and you’d best remember that. They robbed us of what could have been ours. How can you still protect them?” “They did nothing of the sort. And you know it. Get rid of the Vessel and I can help you. Together we can do this. That thing is clouding your mind.” “Get off your self-righteous throne. Come to me. Help me destroy the abominations and we can rule as we were meant to.” “That is not the way and you know it. Those are our descendants.” “Not mine.” “Yes, yours. We are one and the same, brother.” “I thought I wasn’t your brother anymore.” “Don’t you understand? It hurts when you are so far away. I’m incomplete without you. It’s how we were born. To rule together with our mates by our side.” “What happened, Zareb?” “Come to me and I’ll tell you.”

Pain forced Dmitri to his knees. He clutched his head. A sharp, knifing sensation had him collapsing in a heap on the floor. Tears streamed down his face at the agony he experienced. Never before had he experienced this kind of pain. Darkness crept over him. A black, inky substance covered his body and eased his suffering. It invaded his very being and coated him until he lay still. He took a deep breath and the essence was drawn into his lungs. It became one with him, and thoughts of going to Zareb drifted away and hate became front and centre. It was time. They would all die.
**** Max sensed something different. Not wrong, but not the norm. He tried to move his arm, but it was caught on something. “Stop moving,” a voice grumped at him. It clicked. He was mated. Fuck. Not something he’d have thought would ever happen. “We have to talk.” He didn’t think Valerie was going to take this well at all. “We have to sleep,” she mumbled into his shoulder. “Valerie—” Max tried again. “Tired.” “I know, baby, but we have things to talk about.” “Coffee.” “Are you just going to give me one-word answers?” “Yes.” Max chuckled. He eased his arm from under her and grabbed some clothes. “I’ll be back.” “Night.” Max shook his head and left the room. Okay, Valerie was not a morning person. Check. He usually wasn’t much of one either, but his thoughts raced. Once she was fully awake, Valerie might really kill him. “What did you do?” “Huh?” Lost in thought, he hadn’t seen Joy in his path until she’d spoken. “Last night. What did you do?” she demanded.

“Do you really want an answer to that, sis?” He moved, but she didn’t get out of his way. “I think you’d better tell me something. You nearly brought the house down. I went by your room, but it was blocked to me and Russ told me to leave it until morning. You didn’t hurt her, did you?” Now Joy looked worried. “Fuck, you really don’t think much of me, do you?” “You’re different.” Joy cocked her head. “What are you babbling about?” Max was fast losing his patience. Sister or not, there were boundaries. Joy placed a palm on his chest and power flowed through him. “Oh, shit.” She jerked her hand back. “What?” Now it was his turn to be worried. “You two mated, didn’t you?” “Not that it should concern you, but yes. We did.” “You’re different because whatever you did during your mating unlocked your magic from dear old Dad.” “That can’t be. I’m a shifter. There is no magic in me,” Max scoffed. “Yes. There is. I thought all that power was Valerie, but it must have been your powers.” “Stop with the crazy talk. I’m no more magical than you’re a shifter.” “I don’t have both genes. Magic only, and you’re teeming with it.” “Get out of the way. I’m no—” A light bulb shattered. “That—” “Wasn’t me.” Max’s palms burned. He looked down. “What the fuck?” He shook his hands, but the glow wouldn’t go away. Joy took his hands in hers. Calm settled over him and the pain receded. “Maybe now you’ll believe me. You’re powerful, Max. Our line is strong. There aren’t many magical shifters. They are very rare. To have four in one house boggles the mind.” “Four?” Joy continued to soothe him with her touch. He should pull away, but it felt—good.

“You, Bella…” She paused. “Zareb…” Joy whispered the name and continued more strongly, “and now V.” Max closed his eyes. Fuck. He didn’t want to have that conversation with Valerie, but he knew he’d have to do it soon. “Damn it.” “You haven’t told her, have you? Shit. Couldn’t you have stopped your caveman bullshit for a second and given her some kind of warning?” “I tried to—” “Not hard enough. Obviously.” Joy dropped his hands. He didn’t know which hurt worse—the thought of Valerie upset, or the loss of Joy’s warmth. Max took stock of himself. He didn’t feel any different, other than the burning hands. That was some fucked up shit. “What is going on? And where’s my coffee?” Valerie yawned as she walked down the hall. “I’ll leave this to you, stud.” Joy patted Max’s chest. “We will take more later.” Joy left. “What’s with cryptic Joy? And did I ask about coffee?” Valerie rubbed a fist over her eye and blinked at him, still looking half asleep. He stalked towards her, intent on two thing, kissing her and fucking her against the wall. Max wanted to posses every inch of her luscious body. He moved closer. “Eep!” Valerie turned and charged to his room. His wolf was ready to play and gave chase. He picked up the pace, but stopped in the doorway. Valerie hadn’t wasted any time. His shirt, which she had put on to leave the room, was thrown to the floor, and she was tweaking her nipples. He couldn’t have that. His. Max changed direction and dug around in his closet until he found was he was looking for. “Max?” He turned. Valerie sat at the edge of the bed with her head tilted, giving him a look that said ‘hurry up’. Max gave a feral grin. Valerie’s eyes widened. She’d spotted the silky ropes. “Lie down on the bed. Now.” Max expected some sort of fight, but she listened to the command in his voice and did as he asked. Valerie’s chest rose and fell at a rapid rate. He could hear her heart beating in a fast rhythm. Max took a deep breath, and there it was. Her smell made him throb. He wanted nothing more than to sink into her and have his way, but his wolf wanted to play.

Valerie sprawled across the bed, legs spread and ready for him. Taking his time and letting her anticipate what might be coming with the rope, Max started with her toes. He nibbled them and licked the sole of her foot. His tongue made patterns up her leg until he could bury his face in her pussy. Her fragrance drove him wild. Max’s cock wanted to come out to play. He nipped at Valerie’s clit before sitting up to unfasten his jeans. “Please.” Valerie writhed on the bed. Her hands started to wander. “No.” She stopped and panted, giving him a glare for good measure. But she listened to him. That deserved a reward. Max shimmied out of his pants and sighed with relief. He’d feared he’d have zipper marks if he’d remained dressed. Naked now, he settled himself over Valerie’s body and rocked his hips, giving her a little of the friction she needed. Her whimper made him howl. His wolf demanded he mount her, but he wanted more. Max licked the mark he’d left on her neck and picked the rope back up from where he’d laid it down to remove his clothing. “What—” “Shhh. You’ll touch when I say you can touch. Mine. Got it?” “You can’t—Max I have—Damn it…” He chuckled and secured her hands to his headboard, making sure they were loose enough that she could get out if she wanted to. “I can.” Max ran a hand down her body until he got to the juncture of her thighs. He grazed a finger over her pussy and sank it inside. “You’re so wet for me. You like the ropes. Admit it.” He added a second and third finger, pushing in and out. Valerie’s hips rose to meet each of his thrusts. “No.” Max paused, leaving his fingers inside her body but not moving them. Valerie wiggled, but he put a stop to it, holding her down with his other hand. “You like them.” Max licked her nipple. It was right in front of his face, and perfect. “Mmmm…you taste good. I bet you taste great all over. I could lick every square inch of your body.” Valerie clenched around his finger. Max smiled. “Tell me.” “No.” Stubborn female. Max took his fingers away and sucked them into his mouth, getting all of her juices off his digits. Heaven. God, she tasted good. Valerie groaned.

Max removed his fingers. “All you have to do is admit you like to be at my mercy and I’ll slide my cock in deep and not stop until we both come so hard we see stars. Or I could—” Max moved the hand he’d been sucking to give his balls a squeeze before pumping his dick. The wet fingers felt nice. Not as good as being inside Valerie, but he didn’t think he’d have long to wait. “Damn it, Max. Yes. I like it. I want it.” “That’s all you had to say, babe.” Max slid home. He could stay buried inside her forever. Valerie was having none of it. She bucked under him. “You said you wouldn’t stop. Make me see stars.” Well, when she put it like that he couldn’t help himself. He had said he would move, but not how fast. Max wanted to go crazy and pound into her until she screamed his name, but he waited. He wanted her wild with lust. Slow and steady he went. No matter how much Valerie wiggled. Max cupped her hips in his hands and held her down, making her take what he would give. “Max, Max, Max. P—P—Please. Oh. Oh.” Valerie thrashed on the bed. The only thing moving was her head. She clenched her inner muscles. A low, keening cry started in her throat, until a full-out scream ripped from her very soul. His name rang in his ears. Max let Valerie’s hips go as she milked his cock. His hips jerked and he lost control. Sparks flew around the room. Max didn’t care if he was creating them. This was bliss. “Valerie!” Max collapsed on top of her and rolled them to their sides. He didn’t want to let her go. He rubbed Valerie’s back as their breathing calmed and they no longer panted. He’d have to tell her now. He was out of control and someone could get hurt if he didn’t get his magic— God, that sounded weird—under control. “I need—” “That was—” Max chuckled. “You go first.” “That was the most intense orgasm I’ve ever had. Who knew—? I mean, I didn’t know—I…yeah.” Valerie’s face flamed red.

Max would have laughed again, but her knee was too close to his boys. He shifted a little out of the way. “You liked it,” he stated matter-of-factly. “Yes,” Valerie whispered back. “Nothing wrong with that at all. In case you didn’t notice, I liked it too.” He kissed her forehead. Valerie snuggled into him. “What were you going to say?” “Shit.” Max got out of bed and paced the room. He did his best thinking on the move. He’d found himself in this position too much lately. “Is it that bad?” Valerie sounded nervous. He turned to see her huddled on the bed, now under the covers. “Fuck. No. I’m so bad at this shit.” He went back to the bed. “Just say it,” Valerie demanded. Max nodded, took a deep breath and spilled his guts. “I tried to warn you. Just wanted to put that out there for you. And there isn’t an easy way to say it, but you’re a wolf now. It’s part of the mating. Bella wasn’t always a wolf. That’s actually a new development. I don’t know why, I just know that when humans mate with a wolf, they become one too. My guess? It has to do with our longer life-span and the fact that we only have one mate. Not sure, but it sounds good, right? Anyway, soon you’re going to feel the urge to shift. I’ll help you through it and so will the rest of the pack.” Valerie grabbed his hand. It couldn’t be that bad if she was touching him. “Is that all?” Fuck. “That means no, I take it?” Valerie didn’t let him go, but gave him a small squeeze of encouragement. “What?” His brow crinkled. “You just said ‘fuck’.”She cocked her head. God, he wanted to lick her neck. She’d bared his mark. But he needed to get his mind back in the game. “No, I didn’t.” “Then someone else is in the room. I heard it clear as day.” Valerie released him. There is no way—but David did say—

“What did David say? You can’t stop there.” It was her turn to get off the bed. She dragged the sheet with her. She didn’t pace, but stood in front of him. “You’re hearing my thoughts.” It couldn’t be, but it seemed he was not alone in his head anymore. Not a good thing. “No way. That isn’t my thing. I mostly see auras. Helps me read people.” “I don’t know what to tell you, Valerie, but you’re reading what I’m thinking. Or it seems like some of it. We’re going to have to go talk to someone.” “What else?” “Huh?” “There’s something else other than the wolfy stuff. Spill. Or, if what you’re saying is true—I’ll just go digging around that wonderful head of yours.” God, she had balls the size of Texas. He could really grow to love this woman. Mating aside, she was a perfect match for him. There was no way she’d take all his shit. “Damn straight. Now start talking.” “What?” “No, I won’t take your shit. Talk.” “Joy said I’d come into my magic with our mating. That electric shock we were feeling? Me losing control. When I was outside with Joy I blew a light bulb. My hands got red and they were burning and I was upset and—bam—the light was toast.” Valerie sat down on the floor. Hard. “Ouch,” she said, but she didn’t attempt to get up. “Really? The fact that you’re going to turn hairy doesn’t faze you a bit, but now that I have some magic power you’re going to freak?” “Oh, I’m freaking about the wolf thing, just haven’t given it time to process. Magic? I’ve been around it my whole life and I’ve never heard of it manifesting at such a late age.” “Gee, thanks. I’m not ancient, you know.” Max tugged on Valerie’s hair. “Oh, get over yourself. That isn’t what I meant and you know it. Usually it starts at puberty. That gives you time to learn control and grow into it.” She waved him off and pulled away from his fingers. “I don’t think there will be any ‘growing into it’ with me. It’s just there.” Max shrugged. A knock on the door stopped their conversation.

We can save water and shower together.” Max wiggled his eyebrows at her. Valerie laughed. “Somehow, I don’t think we’ll be saving anything. And don’t think this conversation is over. Chapter Six
Something didn’t feel right. Valerie collapsed to her knees. She couldn’t catch her breath and her heart fluttered heavily in her chest. She thought she heard Max yelling, but her hearing tuned out and she got tunnel vision, like a migraine was coming on, but this was nothing like a migraine. It was ten times worse. Her body ached something fierce. Fire. Everything on her body was enflamed. “What the hell?” Was that Max or someone else? Valerie had no idea. A whisper finally penetrated the fog of her brain. “It’ll be okay. It has to be okay. I just found her. Stay with me. What the fuck is wrong? Damn it.” That was her Max. At least their weird telepathic link was still there. Valerie pushed a thought at him and hoped it worked. “Hurts.” “Talk to me, Valerie. Tell me where it hurts. Let me help.” Was that in her head again? She couldn’t tell anymore. A cramp shot through her entire body. She curled into herself. “Shit, Max. She’s going to shift.” Was that David? She wasn’t sure. Her mind was clearing a little, but she still didn’t know everyone’s voice yet. “No fucking way. It’s too soon. We just mated. Bella had at least a day.” Now that was a voice she knew. It offered comfort and warmth. Valerie moved into it. Wanted to wrap herself around it. Maybe the voice could take away the pain. “Yes, but your bond is different than David and Bella’s. You and Valerie, from what Joy says, are both infused with magic. Plus, you know the first shift is different for everyone.” “Russ, man. I can’t lose her.” “You’re not going to.” That voice had power behind it. It could only be the alpha. “Carry her outside.”

No. That was a bad idea. Valerie didn’t want to move. Someone picking her up would make the pain worse. She wanted to die. Why wouldn’t they leave her alone? Someone whimpered. Was it her? Her fingers turned in on themselves. The need to stretch and shift was strong. “Where are you taking her?” Joy. The other comfort in her life. She didn’t want to worry her sister, but she would like to say goodbye. “You aren’t saying goodbye to anyone. You’re going to shift and things will be okay. They have to be.” Valerie tried to smile, but her face wasn’t working. “You can hear her?” Joy sounded worried. “Yeah. We just found out about it before all of this.” Valerie floated. Was that right? Arms tugged her close and something whispered over her head. A voice spoke softly in her ear. “Hold on, babe. I’ve got you. Just listen to my voice and hang on.” She drifted in and out of consciousness. Something brushed against her body. Wait. Was she naked? Around—people. “I’ll hide you the best I can, but clothes will get in the way. Do you trust me?” Trust. Not something she gave out lightly, but she would put her life in Max’s hands any day. A happy vibe surrounded her. Was that her or Max? It seemed they were one and the same. Her life force mixed with his. Fate. Destiny. Who knew? Certainly not her. Pain racked her body again. Would it ever end? Images raced through her mind. She saw herself…well, she thought it was her. Was that how Max saw her? Damn. Then the vision…shifted, and she was the wolf she had dreamt about. A deep, rich-brown wolf. Another wolf walked up to her. Max. His fur was white with blackish red tips. God, he was gorgeous, even in wolf form. Another thought pushed its way past the image. “That’s what you have to do. Focus on that wolf. Become your other self. I know you can do it, sweetheart. You’re the strongest person I know.” Valerie snorted through their connection. Max ignored her. The fire in her body wasn’t as intense as before. I can do this.

She took a deep breath, inhaling as much oxygen as she could, and released the air. She did it again. And again. The image of her shifted shelf was right in front of her. Her bright light. Her focus. She concentrated on that and held it close. Her body moved of its own accord. Her hand grew longer and claws morphed until a paw appeared before her eyes. That was it. She was doing it. Valerie arched her back and a loud pop echoed in her ears. She shook her body and stood. On all fours. I did it! Another wolf body pressed against hers and a moist tongue ran across her snout. She wanted to giggle and laugh. But most of all, she wanted to run as fast and far as she could. “Thank God you’re alright. I don’t know what I’d do without you, V. Go run and play. But when you get back, we need to talk. Some serious shit is about to go down.” Joy ran her hands through Valerie’s fur. Valerie nudged her head and bumped Joy’s chin, letting her know she understood. Then she charged towards the trees so she could become one with the wolf that was forever a part of her now. The wind ruffled her fur. A smell carried over to her and she almost recognised it, when a large form tackled her from behind. Max. Now she knew what he meant by home, because that was what he smelt like. Lemons and Max. Heaven on Earth.
**** Dmitri peered through the trees. He’d shifted to his cat hours ago and now he watched as the pups frolicked. They didn’t sense any danger, but that was only because he’d cloaked himself. Last time he was in the woods he’d almost been caught by David and Bella. He didn’t make the same mistakes twice. Part of him yearned to be out there in the sun. His cat wanted to play, but something had a tight leash on him and he had no idea how to shed it. Through the years Zareb had contacted him and he had shrugged him off. Something was different this time. His skin itched with the need to reach out, but the dark spot inside caused him pain when he tried. No way would he submit himself to more of what had happened at his last contact with Zareb. A yelp brought his focus back to the couple running about. “Kill, kill, kill.”

The voice was getting stronger again, but he couldn’t listen—it wasn’t time. Now that Max had come into his power, Dmitri would need to come up with a new way to destroy the wolves. And he had to do it before the shifter learnt control. Once that happened, Dmitri would have to create more shifters using the Vessel. He wanted to avoid that if possible. Through the centuries he’d had to put down too many of the rabid beasts. They couldn’t control the power of the Other. “Kill, kill, kill.” It was time to move on before he revealed his hand too soon. A rustle behind him gave him pause. What was that smell? “No!” The voice shot through his head. God, the pain. The pleasant scent filtered through the agony. His cat wanted to follow that wonderful smell, but before he could act the Vessel called him back. He had no choice but to transport himself to his holdings. He shifted to his human form and vanished. The smell of earthy grass and woman stayed with him. The evil inside wasn’t happy, but he didn’t care. He would find whoever belonged to that smell, no matter what he had to do to get to her.
**** Max liked the freedom he always felt when he ran with his wolf. No thoughts other than to play, hunt and sleep. Today his wolf wanted to mate. Valerie teased him and he followed, chasing and nipping at her heels. She laughed and he felt it. It echoed through his body. An experience he’d never had before. He wished they’d had time to talk before she’d had her first shift. He hated that he hadn’t had time to prepare her, but she was taking to it better than he’d hoped. “We should go back.” He sent the thought her way. “Play!” She sent back. “Later. We have to go talk to the others.” She barked and shifted back to human form. Valerie was impressive in any form. Max followed suit and stood naked before his mate. “Why did you shift?” Max asked.

“I need you,” Valerie stated simply. “How do you feel?” “Horny. Now come here.” “You know that isn’t what I mean. Any pain now?” Her command was sexy as all-getout, but he wouldn’t hurt her because he rushed things. That wasn’t his way, no matter how gruff he came across. Max protected what was his. For a time that had only been the pack, but now he had—more. It scared the fuck out of him. Almost more than the knowledge that he could blow shit up with his hands. “No. None. And shifting back was easier than I thought it would be.” Valerie stretched, her stomach going taut. Max licked his lips. Mine. “For some reason, the first shift is always the hardest. I think it has to do with your body’s natural resistance to being other than it was born to be.” He had no idea how he had the brain power for any thought. Valerie caressed her body. Exploring where he wanted to go. “That’s nice and all, but I want to fuck you.” Valerie played with her clit and slipped her fingers into her pussy. Nice and easy. She was wet for him. He could smell her. “Wasn’t it you who said ‘not in the woods’?” Max had to tease her to get some control. “Wasn’t it you who said ‘not yet’?” She winked at him. Fun. He was actually having fun and smiling. When was the last time he’d had a lover he could be this comfortable with? Probably never. Valerie rocked her hips and she pinched her nipples. She was a sex goddess, and his. “Too bad I don’t have any rope. I might have to tie you to a fucking tree.” Max now stood in front of her and knelt at her feet. He pulled her fingers away and tasted her essence. He could live off her. “Lie down.” Valerie hurried to follow his command. She spread her legs for him. Max nuzzled in and lapped at her core. Slow, steady strokes with his tongue. Valerie tangled her fingers in his hair to hold him in place. He let her as he fucked her with his mouth. He sucked her clit and nipped it. “Max!” That was the sound he wanted to hear. He moved up her body and took her in a brutal kiss. It was going to go fast this time, but it couldn’t be helped. Max was in a frenzy to mate

with Valerie. To claim her after their first run. She was lucky he’d waited until they were human again. His wolf had wanted to ride her wolf in the worst way, but he had already sprung so much on her, that would have to wait. Max plunged into Valerie, his hips snapping fast. “Touch yourself. Rub your clit,” he managed through gritted teeth. Valerie ran her hands down Max’s chest, her fingers tugging his nipple. It vibrated through him. If his dick could get any harder it would. He was so close to the edge. She continued down until one finger plucked at her clit and the other played with his balls. The stimulation was too much. “Close, Valerie. God. Hurry,” he panted. His name echoed around the valley as Valerie came. Her body wouldn’t stop twitching, her cunt clutching him, milking his cock. He released his own scream as his seed was drawn from him. Max fell on top of Valerie. He tried to move, but his limbs wouldn’t cooperate. He just hoped he wasn’t hurting his mate. That thought gave him the power to shift to the side. A glow started around him. What the fuck? It continued to grow and move away from him. Max positioned himself in front of Valerie as a form came from the light. It couldn’t be. “Son.” Shit. His father was dead. What the hell was he doing here in the woods? “Is that—?” Valerie stammered. “Yes, that is the good old sperm donor. Too bad Joy isn’t here. We could have a big old happy family reunion.” “Yeah, but clothes would be nice. Could we be wearing them at this big family gathering?” Max snorted. Leave it to Valerie to make a bad situation tolerable. The apparition spoke. “I don’t have much time. The Ancients gave me a brief reprieve. I must warn you about something.” “Get on with it, Pops. I need to get my mate back to the house.” Valerie wrapped her arms around him, pressing her breasts against his back. Good, she had some covering.

“The Vessel is coming and it is strong. It has one of the Ancients’ children in its clutches. The time to separate the two is now. You must tell Zareb. He’ll know what to do.” “Only one problem. Zareb has been MIA.” He didn’t want to talk to his father about anything. It could be a trick of some sort. “He’ll return soon. He needs to know. You must talk. He holds the key.” The light flickered. “No matter what happens, you must know I loved you and your sister.” “Yeah, so much that you left us and never told us about each other. Sorry, I’m not going to ease your guilt at this late date.” “Never ask—have to—save them—” His father disappeared. “Well, isn’t this a giant clusterfuck? We need to get back. Can you shift?” “Are you okay?” “Yeah. No. Fuck.” Max ran a hand through his hair. Why did the man have to come to him? Electricity sparked. His hands burned. “It’s the overload of emotions. You need to focus and get control.” “I never fucking wanted any of this shit. Damn it!” He slammed his palm against the ground. Shock waves rippled the ground. He thought he heard something in the distance, but it was probably from his fucking magic hands. “I know. But that doesn’t mean you can’t control it. You are one of the most in-control people I know.” Max snorted. “All I wanted was to help protect the pack. Now all this shit keeps happening. I’m fuckin’ sick of it. I want normal.” “Sorry, Charlie. You should have thought of that before you mated with me. I’m not normal. And for that matter, shifters aren’t normal. That ship sailed at birth, buckaroo.” Valerie patted his back and kissed between his shoulder blades. It was the sweetest gesture anyone had bestowed upon him since his mother’s death. Max’s hands still pulsed with energy. “How do I control it?” He was sick and tired of his control slipping. He hated feeling vulnerable, but at least it was just him and his mate. David would never let him live this shit down. “Relax. Put your hands in mine.” Valerie moved in front of him and held out her hands.

“I don’t want to hurt you.” He didn’t take her hands. “You won’t. Just do it.” Valerie waved her fingers at him. “Bossy bitch.” Max gritted out. “You know it.” She smiled at him. Hesitantly, he held out his hands. The sparks flowed between them, but it didn’t look like they were hurting Valerie. “It doesn’t hurt?” He had to be sure. “No. It’s energy and you need to find a place to put it. It tingles a little, but I have to tell you, it kind of turns me on. But, enough of that. We need to get back and we can’t do that until we take care of this little problem. Now, I’m not as strong as Joy or the others, but I learnt from the best. Take a deep breath. Focus. Kind of like you had me do when I shifted. Think about a safe way to dispel the energy. Let your anger fade. Sometimes closing your eyes helps.” Her voice was more soothing than any deep breathing shit could ever be. She calmed his beast. His wolf wanted to curl up at her feet and whimper for attention. He thought about licking her nipples. Random, he knew, but that was where his thoughts led him. Maybe he shouldn’t have closed his eyes. His mind wouldn’t let it go. He saw himself letting his mouth bring the berry-coloured buds to attention. Nipping them when they filled. Sucking them in deep. His dick took notice. He wanted to fuck again. And again. Shit. “Oh, fuck. Whatever it is—” her voice fluctuated. “I’m going to… Oh god, Max. What…?” She looked like she did when she had an orgasm. He couldn’t have. Could he? He wasn’t touching her anywhere but her hands. Valerie fell into his arms. He pulled her in to him. She was shaking. “What happened?” Had he hurt her? His wolf snarled at him. He barely contained the sound. “What the hell were you just thinking?” she panted. His face had to be enflamed in colour. It felt as hot as his hands had a bit ago. “Well—” he hedged. “Spit it out,” she managed. “I thought about your nipples and how much I wanted to suck on them.” “You—That was—Damn.” He had her speechless. Damn. And his cock wasn’t even involved this time.

“What happened? What did I do? You’re freakin’ me out here. Talk. Any other time I can’t get you to shut up. Say something,” he demanded, resisting the urge to shake her. “You made the energy lick along my body, like you imagined, I assume. It was hot. I’ve never come like that in my life.” Valerie’s body stopped twitching and she cuddled closer. “So it was good?” “I’m saying a big ‘Hell to the Yes’. You can get rid of that energy on me any time.” She chuckled. He kissed her cheek. No way could he do more or they’d be at it again. “Shift. Let’s get this over with.” He stood and brought her with him and tapped her ass before moving back. Touching her right now wasn’t a good thing. They had things to do. “You are so telling Joy about your dad. No way I’m touching that.” And she shifted. Yep. Fun. It was about time he had some. Life was too short.

Chapter Seven
They reached the house in record time. Not that Valerie was anxious to get back. She was enjoying her new body. She liked the playful side that had come out in Max. It was totally unexpected, but nice. And that electric orgasm had been mind-boggling. She hadn’t known something like that was possible. Of course, it seemed like there were a lot of things she didn’t know. Why her mother kept them from her she would never know. Maybe it was time to ask some questions. Valerie just wasn’t sure she really wanted the answers. Too much had happened. All she’d wanted was a simple story. And now her life was completely different. Nothing would be the same again. And mated! Who would have known she would be so comfortable with the thought of being with one man forever? Of course, if the one man had to be someone, she couldn’t ask for anyone more suited to her than Max. They complemented each other. Valerie searched the area for the clothes she knew she’d had on before the shift. She had been wearing something, right? The memory of that time was a big fog of pain. Surely Joy would have left something for her somewhere. A pair of jeans appeared and she shifted so she could grab them. “Couldn’t you have handed me a shirt first?” “Well, I could have, but then I wouldn’t have been able to do this.” Before she had a chance to grab for the jeans she was clutching Max for balance. The man had gone straight for her nipples. Seemed her man was a breast man, her nipples never far from his thoughts. She really shouldn’t go there or she would relive what had happened with his energy. God, that was so hot. “Get a room,” a voice spoke in the silent night. Who was that? Valerie opened the eyes she didn’t even know she’d closed. “Back off, Sparky.” Max snarled in her ear. She could feel it vibrating through his chest, a deep rumble. “Who’re you calling Sparky? Seems to me you earned that name more than I ever did.”

Oh shit. What did he know? Had David been in the woods when they were taking care of the energy? He couldn’t have been. No way. “David, leave them to get dressed.”Bella appeared beside her mate. “But—” David tried. “How would you feel if I was standing naked behind you while Max here talked to you?” Bella crossed her arms over her chest. A growl filled the area. “Thought so. Now let’s go.” Bella tugged her mate away from them. “How totally embarrassing. Not that I don’t love your hands and mouth all over my body, but can we keep this between us? Outside isn’t really that good for me.” “Didn’t bother you earlier.” “We were away from everyone else. That was different.” He snickered. “If you say so. Here.” Max handed her some clothes. Valerie hurried into them. She didn’t want to get caught in the buff again. No matter how much being naked outside seemed to turn her on. It must be a new kink brought on by her new wolf. “Do you think they’re waiting for us?” she said cautiously. “Only one way to find out.” Max took her hand and entwined their fingers. Home. Valerie hadn’t known how much she needed that. Her lifestyle of choice hadn’t involved a family. Hell, she hardly had time for her parents and siblings. Now here she was, in a compound full of wolves who were now family. “This can’t end well,” Valerie mumbled. “What did you say?” “Nothing.” She didn’t want to bring him into her neurosis. It was bad enough she was questioning everything. She needed to meditate, but there wasn’t time. They’d reached the office door. Max opened it to a room full of people. “We need to talk.” That was her man. Straight to the point. No bullshit. Max led her to a chair and for once she didn’t ask questions. Sometimes sitting back and listening could get all the information you needed. She looked around the room. Bella and David were curled up together on the couch. They must have told the alpha that her and Max had returned. Russ was sitting behind his desk. Valerie wondered what he would be like outside the official setting. She hadn’t seen him anywhere else. Joy was off to his side.

They looked cosy. She wondered… No, she was not match-making. There was another couple sitting close that Valerie hadn’t been introduced to. She wondered who they were. “Yes. We do. About a few things, it seems,” Russ agreed. There was a power struggle between Max and Russ. Valerie wondered if the others saw it and if it might cause problems down the road. She hoped not. “Richard appeared to us in the woods.” Joy moved forwards. Valerie had never seen that look on her face before. Almost yearning. Her heart ached for her sister. Sometimes she forgot how abandoned Joy really was. Her mother had died then her father was never around. At least Valerie never knew her mother. It was hard to miss what you’d never known, and Catherine was her mom. Even if her mother showed up, Catherine would still be her mom. And she was done going down that road. “He—what did he say?” Joy’s voice caught on the words. “He said something about a vessel and separating someone from it. To tell Zareb and to save them. Them who, I have no clue. He didn’t stick around for long. His normal M.O.” Max shrugged. “That isn’t all,” Valerie reminded him. She looked over at Joy then back at Max. “The only important part.” He crossed his arms over his chest. “Max—” She wouldn’t back down on this. Joy deserved to know her father loved her. No matter what Max believed. It was important. “No.” He continued to be stubborn. “You have to tell her. She deserves to know.” Valerie stood up and glared, her hands on her hips. Temper at high alert. He would tell Joy or she would. “What? That our father is a bastard just as much dead as he was alive? I’m pretty sure she already knows,” Max insisted. “That isn’t what I’m talking about and you know it.” She moved closer, getting into Max’s personal space. “You two stop it and tell me what you’re talking about,” Joy demanded. Valerie had almost forgotten her sister was there. Or anyone else, for that matter. That was what Max did to her. Be it passion, in anger or love.

“Children, as much as I want you to work out this personal drama, we have more important things to concentrate on. Like finding Zareb,” Russ interrupted. She turned her glare on the alpha. He glared back and she felt an incredible urge to bare her throat. Her wolf whimpered. Totally weird. Not a sensation she liked. “I’m sorry. Finding Zareb is important. I won’t deny that. But this is just as important,” Valerie insisted. “Why won’t you let this drop?” Max’s frustration bled from his words. “I—” She didn’t really have an answer. “I don’t know, but I have a feeling deep in my gut that it is important. Vital even. Tell her.” “Fine.” Max threw up his hands. “Dear old Dad said he loved us. That no matter what happened we had to believe him. There, are you happy?” Max huffed and threw himself onto the couch. He was cute when he pouted. “Fuck you.” Shit. She forgot he could sometimes hear her. “It’s a good cute. The kind where I want to eat you with a spoon and lick—” “Focus. Later.” At least she could now hear the laughter in his voice? Thoughts? Whatever it was. She was forgiven. “Now, back to business.” Russ cleared his throat. Valerie looked over at Joy to see how she was taking it. There were tears in her eyes. She wished they were alone. Joy’s aura flashed from red to green so rapidly they seemed to bleed together. She moved, but Joy shook her head. Valerie closed her eyes and nodded. She sat down beside Max. “We need to get word to Zareb,” Russ continued. “No. We don’t. He knows. He is close,” Joy stated in a flat voice. How did she know that? Before she could ask the question out loud, there was a rustling by the door. Two dishevelled-looking women stood nervously looking over the group in the office. “Who are you and how did you get here?” Russ demanded. Max, David and the other man in the room moved as one to block the path of the women. They stood between their mates and alpha. Protecting them. It warmed her to see it

even as it pissed her off. She could take care of herself. She stood behind her man and noticed Bella and the other woman took up similar positions, putting them all in front of Russ. The older of the two started babbling, but Valerie couldn’t make heads or tails out of what was being said. Was that even English? But she was stunning. Pale skin and red hair. Almost the same colour as Bella’s but a little deeper. The younger woman looked hurt. She was a little shorter, with blonde hair and bright blue eyes. Pain crinkled her brow. “They aren’t here to hurt us,” Valerie stated. “How do you even know that?” Max turned. “I can sense it. And see it. The younger woman? She’s hurt. Someone needs to—” She didn’t even get to finish. Russ broke through the barrier. If that wasn’t chaotic enough, two other things happened simultaneously. A flash of light brought another member to the room as Zareb walked in. A force rushed the room. Valerie could feel it in her soul. A click. She looked around. She wasn’t the only one who had felt it. Something important was taking place. And it had to do with everyone in the space. “It has begun.” A disembodied voice echoed around the room. And all hell broke loose.
**** What the hell? One minute he was in a big vat of nothingness and the next he flashed somewhere. Dmitri paused to get his bearings when his brother walked in. No thinking involved. He charged. Anger welled up inside him. “Kill, kill, kill.” This time he was in complete agreement with the voice. Zareb must die. He was so close when he was tackled from behind. The whole room lit up with power. He couldn’t tell who did what. But it didn’t matter. Someone was going to die. “Enough.” Zareb’s powerful voice overrode the ones in his head. He screamed and writhed on the floor. Whoever had tackled him moved off him. “What did you do?” There were too many people, but he thought that was the pitiful alpha of a people who shouldn’t exist. If it wasn’t for him they wouldn’t be here. He would rectify that by taking them all out.

Dmitri crouched on the floor and his fangs extended down. The benefits of his age. He could partially shift and hold it. “I did not do anything. It is what is being done to him. It is time. We—I need to talk and all of you will listen.” “Just like old times, huh, brother? You taking over. Your time has passed. I’m taking over and starting anew,” Dmitri hissed through his teeth. “You will calm yourself, old one, and listen to your brother.” That voice. Who did it belong to? He searched the women in the group and discarded them all until his eyes fell on the most stunning creature he’d ever seen. She sparkled. Her brightness urged him forwards. He was about to touch greatness and he knew it. In slow motion, he went to her. His fingers brushed her fiery red hair, when he felt the abyss suck him back into the vat of emptiness. “No!” he shouted in the darkness. “Don’t worry, my love, I’ll find you.” The sweet voice caressed his mind and disappeared. Leaving him alone once again. “Kill, kill, kill.”
**** “I said enough. Everyone sit down. Russ, please help Vivian.” Max couldn’t believe it. Total chaos, and Zareb was as calm as you please. How could it be possible? And had Dmitri said ‘brother’? “I think we’ve had enough with the secrets. We need it all laid out, Zareb, or we’re dead.” Max tugged Valerie to the couch. “I agree. That is why I came back when Joy called. First, I think introductions are in order. I am Zareb. The man behind the desk is the alpha of the Masters’ Pack, Russell. To his left are Max and David, his two betas, and their mates Valerie and Bella. On the other side of the room are Erin and her mate Scott. Beside them is”—Zareb hesitated—“Joy. The man who disappeared is Dmitri, and our new arrivals are Vivian and Ive. I believe that is everyone.” “How did you—?” The redhead paused. “How did you know I was Ive and my charge is Vivian?” Max wanted to know, too. He figured there was something more to Zareb than the other shifter let on.

“I will get to that. First, I want to tell you all a story. Then I might have some answers. Not all of them, because unfortunately the Ancients have been keeping things from me.” Zareb sounded annoyed. Hell, the whole situation annoyed Max. A hand crept into his and gave a squeeze. It was then he noticed he’d started to glow. Valerie grounded him with her touch. Good thing she was there or who knew what could happen? Too much power in one room was unsettling. “Many moons ago, Dmitri and I were chosen to become voodge…um…guardians of our tribe. This was a great honour among our people. The Ancients performed a ceremony that would gift us with extra powers, making us shifters to protect our people. Before we were to change, Dmitri and I went on a walk and found an object hidden in the mud. It gesing to us. That is—it sang to us. The temptation was too strong to resist. Dmitri pulled it free. God, I remember it like it was yesterday. I can still smell the crisp autumn air with a hint of rain. I can feel the mud clinging to my feet.” Zareb looked off and didn’t seem like he would finish the story. But he needed to. There was no way Max could protect against the unknown. “Zareb?” It was Joy who questioned the man. She moved closer and Zareb shook himself out of whatever memory he was in to continue. “Jammer. I didn’t mean to drift.” “Jammer?” Joy piped up again. “Sorry. I meant sorry. I don’t slip into my native tongue a lot unless I’m conducting spells. Some words just call for it. Back to my past. We, Dmitri and I, brought the Vessel to the tribe. Holy hell broke loose. The younger members started tearing into each other, going crazy. The shamans tried to use their magic to change the members into animals. Shifters, if you will. It helped to calm some of them, but others continued to hurt each other. Their animal selves made it worse. They were rabid. Dmitri felt the shamans had betrayed him by giving his gift to everyone. I, on the other hand, just worried about the damage inflicted on our tribe. I—” “Like the true guardian you are.” Joy had moved closer, almost within touching distance. Max wondered at the dynamics going on there, but it wasn’t time for that. They still had more they needed to know, and Max had to tell Zareb what his father had revealed.

“Yes. I suppose so. I gathered the strong, sane shifters and vowed to hunt down and destroy the crazy ones. I hated it. They were my people and I had to put them down. It hung heavy in my heart. But it was a necessity. A task I had hoped my brother would help bear the burden of, but he was lost in his anger. It became him versus me.” Zareb paused again. Max could see the story was taking its toll on the man. Joy could, too. She placed a hand on Zareb’s arm and something flared. He jumped, but it didn’t look like anyone else had seen it. Weird. He tightened his grip on Valerie as Zareb continued to reveal his secrets. “Dmitri fled when all of the crazed panthers were put down. It was my duty to follow and keep track of my brother. No one survived the massacre of our tribe. Dmitri and I were the last two standing, so there was no reason to stay. Dmitri took the vessel with him. I wish by all that is holy that he had left the thing behind so I could destroy it. “We settled in Europe for a while and things seemed calm until Dmitri tried to make more monsters. I am not sure why he decided, after all that time, to create more beasts, but he did. I had to counter and created the wolves. Your ancestors. After we had forced Dmitri to run, I left them. I was afraid he would try to destroy them if I stayed. I was on my own for years. Dmitri stayed quiet. I thought peace would finally be mine. I travelled the world, until one day I stumbled upon young Russ here. I knew fate was about to rear its ugly head. That is when the dreams started. Or I should say nightmares. Evil was coming and I needed to be prepared if I did not want millions to die. Because they would. The world was more populated than before. The possibilities for casualties were astronomical. I settled here to help Russ, and hope that the time would not come to pass that I would have to tell my secrets.” Zareb sat down. No one spoke for a bit. Max knew he was trying to digest everything Zareb had revealed. “I think the time has come. My father had a message for me to give you. He said you’d understand.” Max didn’t pretty up his words. He knew now how important his father’s words would be to Zareb. “His exact words? Can you remember?” Zareb seemed impatient. “You don’t seem too shocked that my dead father appeared before me.” “I am centuries old and speak to the Ancients. How shocked do you think I am going to be? Now tell me.”

Power wrapped around Max. He felt compelled to answer. He fought it as much as he could. He would speak on his own terms. His hands flared up again. “Max?” Valerie whispered. He acknowledged her with a smile. He pictured her naked in his head and felt the power recede. He finally had a little control. He wouldn’t tell Valerie what helped. At least not until they were alone and maybe naked. “He said, ‘The Vessel is coming and it is strong. It has one of the Ancients’ children in its clutches. The time to separate the two is now.’ I assume he is talking about Dmitri, but how do we separate him from this vessel? You haven’t been able to do it in all this time. What makes dear old Dad think now is any different?” “The power structure has changed.”

“Excuse me?” Max didn’t understand. “I’m with Max. How has it changed?” Russ finally got in on the conversation. “According to the Ancients, everything we need to succeed is in this room.” Zareb looked around, his eyes not settling on anyone. Max thought he was trying to avoid Joy’s eyes. “Your friend is correct. That’s why Vivian and I are here. We were told by our people we would be needed.” “Just who the hell are you?” Russ demanded. Max noticed his alpha didn’t take his eyes off the injured blonde. “Our people hail from Greenland. My tribe had been in America for years. We were alerted to trouble brewing and told we must help.” “Are you shifters?” “Max! That’s rude.” Valerie tapped him on his arm. “Does it look like I care?” He softened his words with a wink. “That’s okay. Yes. We’re fox shifters.” “Really? How—” Max knew where this was headed—if he didn’t stop her Valerie would have a million questions. “Not now, love. You can ask the foxes questions later. We need to figure out how to help get Dmitri away from this vessel.” “That’s why I’m here,” Ive stated calmly. “The vision.” The room turned to Bella. “I saw two foxes and a group of wolves surrounding a house with a dark cloud hovering around it. I didn’t think it was a dream-vision—I thought it was just a dream. The red fox rushed into the building. A wolf guarded the white fox and wouldn’t let her enter. A great howl went up and the building collapsed. I didn’t see anything else. But that doesn’t bode well for saving your brother, Zareb.”

“You are given these visions to help us change things, Bella. This is good. Do you think you could find this place?” Zareb asked. “Don’t you think we should find out more about what the fox people know? Why didn’t we know about them, and why are they showing up now? In the middle of all this angst? It could be a trap.” “Spoken like a true guardian. You’re coming into your powers, Max. Valerie is your centre. With her by your side, you’ll do great things. Together, with Dmitri’s help, we could destroy the vessel for good.” Ive nodded, a pleased smile on her face. “Why us?” Max demanded. “Now who’s asking all the questions?” Valerie snarked. “You’ll pay for that,” he sent her way. She smiled. “You and Valerie are a mated pair—both magical wolves. David and Bella are a mated pair—one wolf and one very strong magical wolf. Scott and Erin a mated pair. Russ and—” Zareb paused. “Vivian. A mated pair,” Russ finished, looking at the blonde on the couch. That stunned Max—he hadn’t been expecting it. He followed Russ’ gaze. The woman didn’t move under the intense focus. That was good. She would need to be strong. “Ah, yes. If the fates will it, but not yet. The same with Ive and Dmitri and me and—” “Me,” Joy cut Zareb off with a whisper. Max’s mind wanted to explode. “Again. Why us?” “It isn’t us, exactly. It’s our children,” Bella spoke up. “What the fuck are you talking about?” His hand glowed and before he could contain it the lamp on Russ’ desk exploded. “That’s right. You weren’t here when we defeated Sebastian. You don’t know. Our children will be very powerful, and this Vessel doesn’t want us to be together because it means the end of its existence. If we can bury it back in its original spot, it has no power.” “Oh, it will be that easy, will it?” Max couldn’t help the snide comment slipping out. He was outside his comfort zone. And children? What the fuck? He’d gone from happy bachelor to family man in a day. Fuck that shit. He wanted lots of hot sex anywhere he could get it. Kids could wait.

“No, Max. It will not be easy. But what in life ever is?” Zareb’s words did not calm him down. But he was conscious of his powers. He focussed on the words and taking deep breaths. Fuck, he’d be lucky if he didn’t hypervinalate. Stupid fucking magic. He was fine being a shifter. “Does this mean you two”—Max waved a hand in Russ and Zareb’s direction—“have to run out and mate? Do we even have time for that?” Silence. If crickets had been in the room, their chirping would’ve be all you would hear. Max didn’t think the question was that hard. But what did he know? He was already mated and things seemed okay to him. Well, they had until he happened to see Valerie glaring at him. He shrugged and grinned. “Nobody is going to force a mating. We’ll work with what we have,” Ive stated. Leave it to the outsider to speak up. “But how can you—?” “Enough, Max.” Russ’ tone brooked no argument. “I’m going to show our guests to their rooms. You start talking to Zareb and get those powers under control.” Russ turned to the two women. “Vivian, do you need help? We need to go upstairs.” “Russell, why don’t you take Vivian to her room? I think I will be needed here.” It was nice to see someone dismissing the alpha for a change. Max wondered just who this Ive was. Of course Russ wasn’t paying any attention. He was hovering over his mate. “What happened to the two of you?” David wanted to know. “We were attacked on the edge of your property while in fox form. We’ve been in your woods for the past week, but the pull was strong to be here. Today. At this very moment. Now I see why. Djimon needs my help.” “Who is this Djimon? Don’t we have enough people to worry about?” Max demanded. H e looked over at Valerie. She was being too quiet. She seemed to be going in on herself. He tried to touch her mind, but he was blocked. Max went to her side, his worry bringing out his spark. How ironic that he had called David Sparky all this time and here he was, glowing with energy. Max grabbed Valerie’s hand and let his energy flow to her. She jolted out of her trance-like state and smiled. He cocked a brow and she squeezed his hand and held on.

He didn’t care who was in the room. He sat on the couch and pulled Valerie on to his lap. They both needed the comfort of touching each other. Max didn’t think anyone was going to answer his question, when Zareb spoke. “Djimon and Dmitri are one and the same. He shed his birth name after our tribe was no more,” Zareb let them know. He seemed reluctant to share the information. Joy backed out of the room, “I’ll just—” “You can’t leave, Joy. You’re needed here more than you know. Your powers are as strong as mine. Together we will help bring the brothers back together where they need to be, so Djimon can take his rightful place as protector of our people.” Ive blocked the door. “Ive, I don’t know who you think you are, but you can’t come to our pack and start throwing your weight around. We have rules. You will defer to our alpha,” David challenged the woman. “Your alpha, while strong, is out of his league with this one. It might be different if Max was in charge here. He has the power and will of a guardian.” Ive pulled no punches. “Whoa! Wait just one god-damn minute. I am not alpha material and never will be. I’m a soldier. Give me a good fight any day.” Max clenched his hands into fists, trying to keep his emotions under control. He might have some issues with Russ, but the man was a strong and good alpha and he would back the man up until he took his dying breath. “Calm yourself, young wolf. I’m not suggesting you take over, I’m saying if things were different I would not be taking charge, but we are talking about my mate here.” “Just how is it you know you are Dj—Dmitri’s mate? You saw him only briefly.” Zareb was finally getting in on the discussion. It was about damn time. He would set Ive straight on the dynamics of the tribe. “We’re leaving. You don’t need us here right now. We’ll just get in the way. Our children are important in this grand scheme according to the Ancients, but we are of no use to this group.” Scott tugged Erin towards the door Ive blocked. “We need you,” Bella assured the couple, David right behind her. “Bella is correct. We do need you, but not at this time. You are free to leave.” Ive never took her eyes off Joy. “The only powers we need at this time are mine, Joy’s and Zareb’s. We need to complete the circle of four that was foretold when Zareb and Djimon took their spirit walk.”

“What the hell are you talking about, woman? I don’t know about you, but I sure as fuck wasn’t born when the old man here was.” Joy gestured towards Zareb. “Child, you will watch your language.” Ive’s voice was ice cold. “Who the fuc—” Joy started. “And you will not speak to her that way. You have overstepped your bounds, Ive.” Zareb stood tall in the centre of the room, power radiating off him. This was the first time Max had truly understood just how powerful the cat was. “Wait. Do you two know each other?” Joy questioned. Was that jealousy Max heard? Scott waved on his way out of the door. Max noticed that Bella and David followed. Lucky bastards. Max wished he could leave, too, but he had a feeling it was going to be a long night.
**** Valerie was having a hard time understanding everything. Her head hurt. How long had Joy known she was Zareb’s mate? Why hadn’t she said anything? Because you’re a selfish bitch who was wrapped up in a man. Something you told yourself you’d never do. Arguing with herself wasn’t helping. Lost in thought, she jumped when Max grabbed her hand. The familiar tingle of electricity brought her back to the conversation. She didn’t fight it when Max took her to the couch. His touch grounded her. Made her not feel like such a failure. Joy needed her to be strong. “Valerie, you may leave as well. Your mate can stay. I see he needs to control his powers. Why is he so untrained?” “Bullsh—” Max began. “I’ll have you—” Ive interrupted. “Damn—” Joy had to have her say. Valerie just watched the train wreck. “You can not speak all at once. Ive, again, you overstep. We are not in Greenland. You have no authority here, no matter who your mate is. And if things do not get straightened out you will have no mate. So sit down and I will tell you what will happen here.”

“What about Russ?” Max demanded. Her mate was so loyal. The one thing Ive was right about was his power. He’d just touched the surface of what he would be capable of once he learnt control. As it was, she was the least powerful of the bunch. She really didn’t need to be there, but no way was she leaving her family. And that was that. “I’ll be staying, thank you very much, Miss High and Mighty. My place is by Max and Joy’s side. As you said before, I am Max’s centre. His ground, if you will. Yes, I was listening. I’m not all about questions.” Valerie headed Max off at the pass before he made some wiseass remark about her talking. Even if he did have a point. “Russ will return when Vivian is situated in her room. I believe he was calling for one of the doctors to look at her injuries. No need to worry, Max. Russ is in charge here no matter who has the most power. Guardians should never be alphas. Too much power in one spot. If Ive knew anything about our customs, she would be aware of this, but her people are offshoots that do not share our history.” Zareb’s tone was just as icy as Ive’s. “Again, I ask, do you two know each other?” Joy stood with hands on hips, glaring at the two powerful beings. “Simmer down, sister-mate. We know of each other. Zareb is older than I am, but I grew up with the vision of the four of us, hand in hand, protecting our people from entities like the Vessel. Pardon my overstepping, brother-mate. My apologies. Now maybe we could get down to finding Djimon?” That seemed to settle Joy down. Her sister plopped onto the couch next to Max. “You know, this is the most I think I’ve heard Zareb ever talk. I’m not sure if I like it or not,” Max whispered in her ear. “Did you know that Joy and Zareb were mates?” The question slipped out. She really hadn’t meant to, but her curiosity got the better of her. “No clue. But it looks like Joy did.” “Yeah, I got that.” Valerie shot a worried glance at her sister. At times like this, she wished her mother was there. She’d know what to do and say. “You two want to focus?” Russ had re-entered the room. Valerie jerked her gaze up to the alpha. Shit, he looked pissed. Why, she had no clue. It wasn’t like she was looking to overthrow the man. Max just gave a short nod.

“Make no mistake. I am in charge here. I’m the pack alpha and unless someone wants to challenge me, my word is law. I don’t know what kind of organisation you have where you’re from, Ive, or even if you’re in charge, but here things go my way or you can leave now. Zareb, why should we save Dmitri? Convince me I need to put my people in danger to save the man who has tried to destroy us again and again.” Russ went back to his desk. The man was all business and Valerie was impressed. She reached out with her power to gauge the people left in the room. Zareb was stronger than anyone she had ever come across. Ive and Joy were evenly matched, but Joy was more downto-earth. Ive seemed to have a princess complex. Poor Dmitri. Seemed like he would go from one master to another. Russ was strong, but in a different way. He radiated a power that actually surpassed everyone but Zareb. “Interesting.” “What is?” She must have projected her thoughts. “How powerful Russ is.” “I could have told you that.” “Just—listen and stay out of my head.” His laughter echoed, and she smiled. He did make her happy. And thinking of Max, his power surprised her most. Valerie hadn’t really looked at him after his magic had come to him. Well—she’d looked, but not at his power. He was just as strong as the other two women. No wonder he had control issues. To come into power that strong in such a short time was unheard of. She was surprised he hadn’t killed anyone yet. She would have to introduce him to her mom. She’d love to see little, bitty Catherine bossing big, bad Max around. “He’s possessed.” Didn’t seem like a strong argument to Valerie, but Ive seemed to think that would put the alpha at ease. “And that is my problem how? We should put him out of his misery and be done with it.” Russ didn’t seem too impressed. “Would you be saying that if you knew he was the reason you were even given a glimpse of your mate? If not for him, we would not be here and the two of you would’ve never met. Think of that before you condemn an innocent man.” Ive showed no emotion whatsoever. Valerie was beginning to think the redhead was made of ice.

“Lady, I don’t know what you’ve been smoking, but Dmitri isn’t innocent. If it were up to him, we’d be dead.” Leave it to her mate and his colourful words. “That may be true of Dmitri, but the same can’t be said for Djimon.” Valerie wasn’t sure what Ive meant. “They’re the same person.” Max verbalised her thoughts. “Are they really?” Ive arched a brow. “It matters not. I will go alone to save Dmitri. There is no need to place anyone in danger.” “No!” Joy leapt off the couch and got in Zareb’s face. “You won’t go alone. No fucking way. I’m being dragged into this destiny-fest and I’m going all in.” Joy poked Zareb’s chest. “Do we understand each other?” “No worries, sister-mate. You and I’ll be alongside Zareb in this quest.” “What about the rest of us?” Max wasn’t willing to be left out and where he went, she would go too. “Max you’ll—” Ive began. “Do I have to tell you again, Ive? My house. My rules. Zareb. Is he worth it? Can Dmitri be saved?” “I believe, now that his mate is here, he can be. This is what the Vessel has been trying to prevent. You saw how fast they yanked him away.” “I did. Then it is settled. In two days time we’ll—” “Two days!” The first hint of fire showed in the ice queen. “Yes. Max needs time to hone his new gift. He’ll need all the help he can get. I suggest we all get to bed and in the morning he can start his training. Bella is still getting help with control. They can work together. Now that you’re here, Ive, maybe you would be of some assistance. You may leave.” Valerie hurried to leave the room. She wanted to speak to Joy anyway. But Joy didn’t follow. “Leave them be, babe. You can talk to her later.” Max pulled her along behind him. “But I need—” “Me.” He supplied the words for her. “Well, that too, but she’s hurting, Max.” Valerie chewed on her lip. She was worried and didn’t want Joy to do anything stupid.

“She might be. But knowing you’re mates with a man who is as powerful as Zareb would rattle anyone. She needs to adjust. Like we did.” Max kept them moving up the stairs. “We adjusted, did we?” Valerie teased. He helped her relax in a way she never had. And come to think of it, she hadn’t thought about work in a while. She probably should check in. There were things she had to do. File a couple of stories. Pull the plug on the— Max pulled her close and captured her mouth. Her thoughts scattered. She opened, letting him in. She collapsed into his arms, knowing he would be there to catch her. She whimpered when he clutched her ass and squeezed. God. She could stay in bed and have sex with this man forever. He pushed her against the wall and put his leg between her thighs. Her hips bucked against him. The friction was wonderful against her pussy. He was so deliciously firm. She wanted to lick and touch and play. Valerie jumped and Max caught her. She wrapped her legs around him and tugged on his hair, urging him to deepen the kiss and give her more of what she wanted. Naked would be good. Maybe if she— “Excuse me.” A polite voice penetrated her lust-filled fog. “Shit,” Max murmured against her lips. “When you’re in my arms everything else fades to nothing.” She would lie down right now and let him take her, not caring who watched. No one had ever said something so romantic to her. Her heart ached with happiness. She might have been thrown into this, but she was hanging on for life. Max had better be ready for the ride of his life.

“Is there something we can do for you, miss?” It took all of Max’s willpower to release Valerie. He didn’t want to let go and she wasn’t helping, squirming around in his arms. She finally dropped her legs and he turned to hold her in front of him. He didn’t want to scare their intruder with his tented jeans. “It’s Vivian. Please. I’m so sorry to interrupt, but I’m lost. I can’t seem to find the room I was assigned.” “Well, aren’t you a polite one? They will eat you alive. I think we need to talk.” Valerie recovered nicely. He thought for sure she’d be beet red with embarrassment, but she was taking things in her stride. “Now, Valerie, don’t scare her.” God, what a woman. And she was all his. “Scare? I’m going to help.” He’d have to keep her busy with sex or Russ might kill him. He loved Valerie, but her mouth could get her into trouble. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea,” Max hedged. Love. It couldn’t be. Not so soon. His wolf disagreed with him, obviously. “Again, if you could show me to my room?” Vivian broke into his thoughts. “Sorry. Well, I’m not sure where Russ put you. I can go—” he started. “No. No, I don’t want to disturb him.” Vivian backed away. “It really isn’t a problem. We should probably get you off that leg.” She was limping pretty badly. He wondered if the doctor had looked at it yet. “No worries. I’ll show Vivian to her room. You two should get to your room, Max.” Max hadn’t even heard the alpha come up the stairs. He turned and dragged Valerie with him. He didn’t want to get between an unmated pair. No way in hell. His alpha would have him on his ass in a heartbeat. “But I wanted to—” “Later. Don’t we have some unfinished business?” He was still hard enough to pound nails. He wanted to be inside his mate. Tomorrow would bring enough hassles. Tonight he wanted to forget it all in Valerie’s body. And what a body it was.

He could get lost in it for days. Everything else faded into the background. He was completely focussed on his mate. “Mine,” Max growled. Typical wolf statement, but he couldn’t keep from saying it. He was possessive. She’d have to get used to it. “Down boy. Yes, I’m yours. But you’re mine, too, and don’t you forget it.” Valerie tugged him down and bit his lip. It went straight to his cock. She licked at him and nibbled and bit a couple more times before moving on to his neck. They still hadn’t made it to his room. Max picked her up and threw her over his shoulder. If they didn’t get to a bed soon he would take her where she stood. Damn the consequences. He fumbled with his door until he got it open. He slammed it shut behind him and tossed Valerie onto the bed. “Naked. Now.” “Yes. Naked. Now,” Valerie repeated. She scrambled off the bed and he stopped everything to watch her. She was graceful even in her hurry. Her long, slim fingers worked at her pants and wiggled them off until she stood in front of him in panties and a shirt. She was stunning. “What are you waiting for? Naked. Now. Remember?” Valerie teased. Just for that, he would take his time. Teach her to sass off at him. Max inched his shirt off his body, showing a little skin at a time. Valerie’s hungry eyes followed his every move. She started touching herself, letting her fingers teased her clit. He moaned. Maybe slow wasn’t a good idea. Fast would work. He ripped off his shirt and tore at his jeans until he was bare. Valerie dropped to her knees and crawled over to him. So fucking sexy. He spread his legs further apart to accommodate her. She placed both hands on his thighs to steady herself before taking the head of his cock in her mouth. She lapped at his pre-cum. Max cupped her head to hold her still. She stopped moving and sucked harder. Just the tip. It was driving him crazy. He held her head so she couldn’t move and slowly pushed his way in. He didn’t want to hurt her by rushing. The wet heat of her mouth was almost too much. He pulled back out and slid back in, and she did some weird swirly thing with her tongue and swallowed. He thought he’d shoot right there. “God, Valerie. So fuckin’ good. Your mouth is like heaven.”

She sucked harder. He was going to come, and he wanted to be inside her, driving her as crazy as she was driving him. He pulled all the way out, the cool air caressing his wet skin. Valerie whimpered and scooted closer, like she would take him in again. He couldn’t have that. “On the bed. If you suck my cock again I’m going to come and I want to be buried deep inside you before I explode.”Max clenched his dick in his hands and tugged on his balls, the slight pain easing his need to come. Valerie scrambled to the bed, her ass wiggling. God, he wanted in there. “Stop.” She looked back at him with a curious expression on her face. He stalked to the bed and slapped her ass. “Max!” His palm soothed the red mark and he leaned in to kiss it. Valerie pushed back into him. Max got on the bed and spread her cheeks. He licked her hole before he moved back to blow on the tight pucker. “I’m going to fuck this ass soon. Right now I’m too turned on and I don’t want to hurt you.” Max sucked on a finger and circled her rosette. He slowly slid his digit in to the knuckle. Valerie clenched tight. She liked the idea. He used his other hand to see how wet she was. She was soaking wet. Enough playing. He wanted to be inside her. He knelt behind her and guided his cock into her pussy. He sank in to the hilt.. She pushed back and Max moved so he was resting on his legs and she was upright. He cupped her breasts and tweaked her nipples. Her hands covered his. “Ride me, baby. Make me come so hard they hear me screaming your name on the other side of the house.” She squeezed his dick and moved her ass up and down. Fuck, she felt good. Max grasped her hips to help her move. She swivelled in a figure of eight, and his cock loved it. “Max. I need…please.” “What do you need, baby?” She didn’t tell him, but she took his hand and guided it to her pussy. He took the hint and rubbed her clit. He tapped her and she went wild, so he decided to try something else. He slapped her pussy and she howled.

“Max! Oh, god. I’m coming. I’m coming.” She threw her head back and screamed his name. That pushed him over the edge. His whole body glowed with power and he grounded himself with Valerie’s body. The shocks moved back and forth between them. Max had never come so hard in his life. Not even when they had first mated. Max eased Valerie off him and snuggled behind her, holding her tight. He would never let go, and nothing on this Earth, short of death, would take her from him. Mine.
**** Valerie quivered. Her body wouldn’t stop with the tremors. She was surprised Max was able to drift off to sleep. That had been the most intense experience of her life. She belonged to Max. There was no way she could deny it even if she wanted to. She had some heavy thinking to do. And she couldn’t sleep. She eased out of the bed. “Where you goin’?” Max said into the pillow. “Need a drink. I’ll be back.” She rubbed Max’s back until he fell asleep. Looking for clothes in the dark wasn’t easy, but she managed and went downstairs. She still wasn’t too familiar with the house and when she got to the bottom of the steps she needed something else. A run. That would help her think. Valerie made her way to the front door and walked to the back yard. She looked around for a place to leave her clothes and found a nice bush she could also hide behind while she changed. It was easier to shift this time. She loved the freedom of being a wolf. She trotted to the woods and took off running. She thought she smelt a rabbit off in the distance. She chased the scent until she got to the clearing with a pond. Something was out there. Valerie raised her snout and inhaled. It was wrong. Bad. Her hackles rose and she backed away. Before she could get very far, a net closed around her. She was trapped. She struggled, but she couldn’t untangle herself. “Who have we here? Are you one of the new wolves?” It wasn’t like she could answer, and no way was she shifting around the stranger. She recognised his scent. It was Dmitri. She edged closer for a good smell. He was sick. Ive and Zareb were right, he needed help. “Max. Help. Dmitri.”

She couldn’t send more. She needed to figure out where he was taking her. She tried to bite Dmitri when he picked her up, but the net impeded her and the angle was wrong for a good grip. There was no hope for it. She was going with the crazed man. She only hoped that help found its way to her soon. She knew she wouldn’t be able to hold out for two days. Max needed more time, but fate wasn’t giving it to him. He’d have to go into battle untried. There was no helping it, because Valerie knew her mate wouldn’t leave her in Dmitri’s clutches. She had to pray for her safety and that of her family. “You can shift, you know. I’d like to know who I’ve taken and who is coming after me. You’re not powerful enough to be Zareb’s mate.” Valerie tensed. He knew about Zareb’s mate. Joy. Her sister was in jeopardy. The only thing she had going for her was that Dmitri didn’t seem to know that Joy and Zareb hadn’t mated yet. “So, not Joy, but maybe her sister? Good. Max will be fun to kill. His dad should have put him down when he was a pup.” Valerie snarled and wiggled. She wanted out of Dmitri’s arms. She’d show this bastard. He threw her into the back of a van. Like he’d been expecting to kidnap someone. How much did this Vessel see? Damn it. She wished she knew more about this feud and what the Ancients knew. If she shifted, could she appeal to Dmitri’s guardian side, or was he too far gone? Her clothes were back at the house and she didn’t really want to be naked in front of the guy, but being a wolf wasn’t going to help her. She had no idea if her message had even made it to Max. He could still be sound asleep for all she knew. No one had seen her leave. She was on her own and she wasn’t a quitter. Clothes be damned. It didn’t take long for her natural human form to take over. “Ah! I was right. The lovely Valerie.” “How do you know that?” There were more important things she should be asking, but she had to know. “I know a lot of things.” “Do you know your mate is waiting for you at the compound? She’s travelled a long way to find you. Maybe we should go back. I’ll introduce you.” Valerie tried for upbeat and hopeful. “I have no mate.”

“Is that what the Vessel told you? That evil dark thing that took you away from your brother?” “Shut the fuck up. The Vessel took me from no one. The elders and the Ancients took everything away from me.” “Who are you going to believe? The man who’d stand by your side through eternity or the evil thing that made you kill your own kind?” “I told you to shut up.” It was a good thing Dmitri had thrown her in the back and he was driving. Valerie had a feeling if she was any closer he would have slapped her. She didn’t have a whole lot of time to convince the man to let her go. Who knew what the Vessel would demand of him? She could tell he was totally under its pull. “I wish you could have seen your mate. She’s a little icy, but very beautiful. Did I tell you she is from Greenland? She’s a fox. Literally. Who knew there were more than wolves and—cats? You are the one who attacked me the other night, aren’t you?” “Do you ever shut up?” “No. I can’t seem to help myself.” Valerie shivered and wondered if it would be safer to shift back to her wolf. At least it would be warmer. “Well, you’d better start.” The silence stretched and she didn’t try to fill it with chatter. The van bumped along and she couldn’t figure out where they were going. Her senses were all messed up. Dmitri looped around so much she was sure he was trying to confuse her on purpose. “Are you okay?” Thank god. Max. She’d reached him. Valerie almost broke down in tears. The sound of her mate soothed her, but there wasn’t time for a breakdown. She needed help and she wasn’t afraid to admit it! “For now. He hasn’t hurt me, but he’s sick, Max. Something’s wrong with him. He needs help.” “Fuck that, baby. He needs to die. He took what was mine.” “Down, boy. Just bring the cavalry.” A sharp pain cracked through her head. She saw bright pin-points of light, until her vision tunnelled to black. The throb was so bad and intense that what little she had had in her stomach was now on the van floor. She’d lost Max. And she hadn’t even said she loved him.

“No talking to lover boy. You’ll see him soon enough when you die together.” Well, that was something. At least he’d keep her alive until Max could reach her. She wondered if that meant he would be telling the other shifters where to find them. That could work in her favour. As soon as her head stopped pounding, she shifted. She didn’t want to talk to the madman any more, and the cold was hurting. At least in wolf form she could curl in on herself and stay warm. “Hurry, Max. I love you.” Valerie didn’t think he heard her, but it made her feel better. She already missed her mate and wanted him with her. She would do everything she could to escape, and if that failed she would kill Dmitri before he could hurt her family. She growled and paced the back of the van until it stopped. She prepared herself to jump. The net still hampered her, but if she could jump she might be able to run away and worry about the covering later. “You won’t leave. Not yet. Sleep.” No. She didn’t want to sleep. He couldn’t make her. Could he? The pull was great to slip into slumber. A spell? She stumbled and laid down, shifting back to her natural state before the black took her under. “Love you.”

Max bolted out of bed. Valerie was gone. Hadn’t she said she was going for something to drink? How long ago was that? He pushed the covers off and pulled on his jeans. Max rushed downstairs. “Valerie?” No answer. He didn’t see her in the kitchen. Where could she be? He’d been dreaming, right? No way in hell Dmitri had her. Valerie was safe inside the house. Why would she leave? His hands lit up. His head ached. In the dream Valerie had spoken to him, asking for help. She’d told him to bring help then a pain had woken him up. A bolt of lightning left his fingers and struck the counter. “Fuck, Max. You’ve got to learn to control that. What’s the matter?” Russ stalked into the room and put out the small flame he’d caused. “I think Dmitri has Valerie.” He paced the room. “How?” “I don’t fucking know. Okay. I went to sleep, she said she was going to get a drink, and when I woke up she wasn’t there.” “Could she have gone for a run?” “Like I said. I. Don’t. Fucking. Know.” Max seethed, not sure if he was angry with Russ’ questions or himself for not being there when Valerie needed him the most. “Don’t take that tone with me. I know you’re worried, but we’ll figure it out.” Russ’ words did nothing to calm Max. “If it was your mate you’d be bat-shit crazy right now and you know it.” Max glared at his alpha. “You’ve got me there. I would be, and I would hope that you’d be able to talk me down before I did something stupid,” Russ stated. Max just arched a brow. “You’re right, I’d do it anyway. Fuck. I’ll go wake up Zareb, you get Joy.” Russ left the kitchen.

Fuck. He didn’t want to tell Joy he’d lost her sister. She’d have his balls for breakfast. Not that he didn’t deserve everything she’d dish out. He knocked on her door and waited. “Do you know what time it is?” She rubbed her eyes and glared at him. “Valerie is missing.” Max’d never seen anyone wake up as fast as Joy did. “How? When?” She sounded like Valerie with her rapid-fire questions. His heart ached at the thought of losing her. He clutched at his chest as the intense wave of emotions washed over him. “I don’t know. I thought I was dreaming, but when I woke up she was gone. I don’t have concrete proof, but I think Dmitri has her.” Max ran a hand through his hair in frustration. “I’ll kill him.” Joy seethed. “Stand in line,” he snarled. He’d make the man wish he’d never been born. No matter how sick he might be. “Do you think Bella can take us to him?” Joy left her door open and started to get dressed. “I can. I think.” Max looked behind him to see Bella and David hovering. “Has anyone told Ive?” David inquired. “No need. I was hoping we would avoid this. Bella, there is no need for you and David to leave. I know where Djimon is.” Ive breezed into the hall. “What the fuck! You could have told us this earlier,” Max yelled. “No, I couldn’t. It wasn’t time.” She folded her hands together in a way that was beginning to piss Max off. Stupid, fuckin’ know-it-all bitch. “Fuck you and your time. He has my mate.” He was so angry, he moved closer to the woman. “That is why you’ll stay here,” Ive stated matter-of-factly. “You’re not my alpha and there is no way in hell I’m staying behind. And you’d better fucking stay out of my way if you know what’s good for you. Female or not, I will take you down.” He loomed over the smaller woman.

Max’s anger manifested in the usual way. There was no stopping the fireworks in the hallway. Zareb came up behind him and touched Max’s shoulder. His power drained and Max crumpled to the floor. “You can come, Max, but you have to control that temper. You’re going to burn yourself out or kill someone. This is what Dmitri hopes will happen. He knows you’re untrained and volatile. Those are bad combinations in our world.” Zareb helped Max stand. “Will he hurt her?” Max whispered. He had to ask, but he really didn’t want to know the answer. He was truly afraid for the first time in his life. “I don’t know what he’ll do. The darkness has worked on him for so long. Ive, you’ll stop holding out on us right now. Take us to Dmitri.” Zareb meant business, and Max was grateful. “You know we can’t go to him yet. We’re not prepared.” Ive remained stubborn. Max was going to tear her limb from limb and there wasn’t going to be anything anyone could do about it. “We’re as prepared as we’re going to be. Take us now,” Russ demanded. “Ive. Listen to them. Please. I beg of you.” The soft voice of Russ’ mate soothed Max in a way he thought only Valerie could do. He cocked his head, wondering at his response. It was in no way sexual, just—soothing. Not even his alpha could get this level of calm in Max. “Vivian. Please go back to your room.” Ive whirled around. “You can’t protect me forever, Ive. Listen to the alpha. It’s time.” Vivian’s nod was regal. “As you wish.” Ive bowed to Vivian. “We’ll talk about this later.” Russ looked between the two women. He looked as confused as Max felt. There would be time for all this later. He had a mate to save and he was holding on to his sanity by a thread. “We leave now. Max, Zareb, Ive, Joy, meet me outside in five.” Russ left the hall. “You are not going,” Zareb commanded. Max didn’t think that would work on the feisty woman. Joy bristled. If she was a shifter, her hackles would have been raised, causing most to back off. Max was glad that focus wasn’t on him. Magic swirled in the air, but this time it wasn’t him.

“Don’t push your luck, cat. That’s my sister and I’m a powerful witch. I will be there.” The flow of magic stopped. Someone got control of whatever power was building. Max wanted that type of control. “I will not have you in danger.” Zareb glared. “Your tough luck.” Joy glared right back before she turned and marched down the steps. “Are you sure we can’t help?” Bella asked. “Keep the home fires burning. Who knows what we’ll encounter. We might need your help when we get back,” Max assured her. Bella took his hands in hers. “We’ll be here. Bring your mate home safe.” “I should go with you,” David stated. “You take care of your mate. She’s special that one.” Max squeezed Bella’s hands before releasing them. “Yes, she is. I’ve got your back if you need it.” “I know, Sparky.” And he did know. No matter how much they teased, the pack was family and they would die for each other if need be. “Ha! Go save your woman.” David slapped him on the back and followed Bella to their room. Max tuned everyone else out and went outside. He was ready to find Valerie, and whoever stood in his way would die.
**** Dmitri passed the length of the room. He fought with the black spot in his soul. Sometimes it was clear enough that he could take control, but most days he spent in a fog. It had been forever since he’d had a clear day. He couldn’t remember a time without the darkness hovering over him, demanding he do its bidding. After his talk with Zareb he had started exerting some control. That had been days ago. He had no idea how he’d ended up in this house with a woman strung up in the basement. He was afraid to find out. The answer he might get scared him.

He had to do something. What, he had no clue, but he was different. When a force had taken him to Russ’ office and he had smelt his mate in the room, he’d known he had to pull out of his haze. The Vessel controlled him with the inky being and pain. He usually retreated inside himself. Now was not one of those times. It was time to talk to the woman. Kill, kill, kill. The voice was faint, but still there. He struggled, but managed to push it back. One step at a time took him slowly to his destination. “Who are you?” He was hesitant. Not how he remembered being, but everything was a haze. The woman looked confused. Not that he blamed her. “What are you talking about? You told me who I was when I was in wolf form. What gives?” He gave her credit—she didn’t twitch, and stayed calm. Of course, she was strapped to the wall with her hands behind her back. He wondered why she didn’t shift if she was a wolf. What kept her there? “I did?” Why couldn’t Dmitri remember? “Yes. You thought I was Zareb’s mate. Or maybe you hoped.” The woman gave a tired chuckle. “Why would I—? No, it isn’t possible.” Dmitri shook his head. “You really are crazy, aren’t you?” She didn’t accuse, just stated a fact. “If you’re a wolf why haven’t you shifted and escaped?” That seemed a logical question. “You said some mumbo jumbo and now I can’t shift. I’ve never felt magic like that before. Dirty.” “So humour me. Who are you?” Dmitri demanded. “I’m Valerie. Max’s mate. Joy’s sister.” “Who is Joy?” The name sounded oddly familiar. “Wow. Um—okay. Joy is Zareb’s mate.” “When did he mate? How much time have I lost?” he mumbled to himself. “Stop talking in circles. How can you know me one minute and not the next?”

“I think it’s the Vessel.” “Ive and Zareb were right. You need help. God, I hope I can stop Max from ripping you apart.” “Ive?” That brought visions of a lovely redhead with lush curves and blue eyes who smelt of the Earth. “My mate,” he whispered in wonder. “I was told—” “Let me go,” Valerie demanded. “Now, while you’re all here. Before—whatever comes back. I can get you to safety. There is help at the pack house. I promise.” He moved closer, when he was racked with pain. The demon came forth, pushing him back to a corner of his mind. He wasn’t strong enough anymore. Maybe he should let go completely. He couldn’t stop the screams when they came. Dmitri didn’t know if it was him or the woman. But what did it really matter? They were both dead. Lost to the Vessel. He was ready to let go. Or so he thought. The vision of his mate was front and centre. Could he let her down? Doom her to living a life on her own? It would be for the best. He was no good to anyone. He could still hear the screams of his people in his nightmares. Like a visitor looking on.
**** Valerie had him. She knew she did. He was going to untie her and she would be home free. Or so she thought. Until he clutched his head and—changed. The dirty was back. Now she noticed the difference. Dmitri was possessed. She wouldn’t have believed it if it hadn’t happened before her eyes. She knew there was no use talking to this creature. It wouldn’t listen. “You’ve been a bad girl. Trying to get Djimon to free you. He can’t, you know. He is too weak. Dmitri is in control now, and you will die. And so will the rest of your family. They’re on their way now.” “So there are two of you? Djimon and Dmitri are two different beings in the same body?” “I will not answer your foolish questions,” Dmitri scoffed. “Why? Are you afraid? He came out once. Djimon can come out again. Didn’t you like it when he was in the driving seat? His conscience gets the better of you.”

Valerie didn’t expect the slap. She should have. She’d egged him on enough. Her head hit the wall behind her. She closed her eyes and took the pain. At least it meant she was alive. And alive was better than dead any day. “You hit like a girl.” That was uncalled for, but Valerie couldn’t keep her big mouth shut. The next time, Dmitri punched her in the face. That would leave a bruise. “That all you got?” Inside she was screaming at herself to stop, but she couldn’t. The urge was too strong to deny. The fist got her in the gut this time. If she hadn’t been strapped so tightly to the pole, she would have doubled over in pain. “I don’t know what it is you wish to achieve here, but whatever it is, it won’t happen. Be a good girl and accept your death.” “Never. So why are you so afraid to answer me? Too chicken to talk? Or does the Vessel have you by your balls so tight you can’t speak for yourself?” “I will have you know I have grown in strength over the centuries. Djimon grows weak. Soon it will be me alone in this body without the whimpering simp in there driving me to distraction.” Good, she had him talking. She had to push on through the pain. “So there are two of you,” Valerie confirmed. “Yes. The Vessel has souls that need bodies. I’m one of those. I will be the greatest being in the world. People will bow at my feet.” “At your feet, or the Vessel’s? Don’t you think that once you get too big for your britches the Vessel will replace you with someone it can control?” “You have no idea what you speak of.” Dmitri sneered. “Of course I do. Isn’t that how evil works? You are a puppet on a string, my friend. Bring Djimon back. I’m tired of talking to you.” Valerie dismissed him. She knew it was a dangerous road she was going down, but she was at her wits’ end on what to do. She’d be of no use if she was still tied up when the others got there. “You will not command me, woman. You are nothing.” “That isn’t true and you know it. If it was, I’d be dead already. Your Vessel won’t let you kill me yet. You have no control. Like I said, a puppet.”

Dmitri stormed up the steps. She had him and she knew it. Hopefully, she could spread enough doubt that Djimon came out. There was no way she could let Max kill the innocent man. Who’d have known the ice queen would be right? Valerie hoped she would have time to warn Max. Her connection to him had been severed by Dmitri, or he was ignoring her. She had a hard time believing it was the latter. It couldn’t be permanent, any more than her not being able to shift was. A spell that needed to be broken, she reassured herself. Valerie closed her eyes against the pain. She wanted Max. If she strained really hard she could smell him. She wanted more time to run with him and play. It wouldn’t end here. She wouldn’t let it. Damn the Vessel. Hurry, love. Her body hummed with power. Maybe if she focussed she could escape. Something had slipped, it must have. Minutes ago she’d been without even a trace of magic. Her hands burned, but she ignored it. Take that, Vessel. Her ropes slid from her wrists. Valerie crumpled to the floor, her legs not able to support her after she had been standing strapped to the wall for so long. Her fingers tingled as the blood started circulating again. She didn’t have time for this. She had to hurry. Dmitri had told her the pack would be there soon. Seconds ticked by, and she managed to get to her feet. The steps seemed so far, but she had to do this. A noise from above gave her pause. She drew her powers close. She still couldn’t shift, but she could throw a fireball if she needed to. The creak moved away from her and she released a deep breath. Valerie crept up the stairs as quietly as possible. She couldn’t get a fix on where she was. It looked like an old warehouse. The space was big, but she’d never been in a building like this before. It wasn’t a house. She was sure of that. She finally arrived at the door. She reached out to touch it and was blown off the steps, onto the hard concrete floor. Valerie hadn’t been expecting the burst of power. The air was knocked from her lungs and she couldn’t move. “I’m not stupid, bitch. Did you really think it would be that easy?” The laugh of a madman echoed through the room, penetrating Valerie’s pounding head. She was stuck. Damn it. She’d have to see if there was anything around she could use as a weapon. Later. Right now, she needed to close her eyes. Just for a minute. Why was everything spinning? Yeah, a minute would be good. Sleepy. She was so…sleepy.

Chapter Eleven
The drive seemed to take forever. Max wished they could have transported there, but he didn’t know enough about it. It couldn’t be that hard. Dmitri could do it. Of course, the man was as old as dirt. Maybe it would come in time. All he knew was that Valerie had better not be harmed. “Max, calm down. I can’t have you frying the SUV or we’ll never get there,” Russ called from the front seat. Max’s control was rough at best—the added stress didn’t help at all. “Focus, and I’ll give you a few tips. If you could control your temper that would help us all,” Ive reprimanded Max. “If you want to help, you could cool it with the attitude. You’ve been all ice queen since you blew into our pack house. What gives?” Talking helped his anger stay at bay. He’d talk to the devil himself if it helped. But all bets were off when they reached his mate. They’d better stay out of his way. “You’re getting angry again,” Ive scolded. “You never have said who you really are,” Max stated. “I am the protector of the princess of our people.” “Princess?” He tilted his head. He’d thought royalty only happened in England. Too many princesses popping up for his liking. And how many princesses could there be? First Joy and now Vivian. They couldn’t be related—one was a fox and the other a witch. Richard’s people didn’t descend from foxes. Max was pretty sure they came from Salem. They weren’t as old as the foxes or the wolves. “Vivian is the princess of our people. It is my job to protect her from everything.” Ive explained it like he was a simpleton. Bitch. He wanted to snarl and growl, but he was trying to control his temper. He was holding by a thread. They’d better get there fast. “Not very good at your job, huh?” Max settled for a snarky comment. “I beg your pardon?” Ive arched a brow like she was too good for the likes of him. He’d fuckin’ show her. He needed to calm down.

“No need to beg, lady. Vivian got hurt on your watch. Seems like bad form to me. Does Russ know about the whole princess thing?” Max waved a hand around. He smirked. It would be fun to watch Russ with a snobby princess to drive him wild. “I have no idea. That is between the princess and the alpha.” Ive sniffed. “Do your people even know she’s gone?” He hoped his gut was wrong and these two weren’t on the run. Ive didn’t move a muscle or answer his question. That didn’t bode well. Damn it. He would wish a lot of things on his stiff-necked alpha, but another war wasn’t one of them. One thing at a time. Breathe. She’ll be fine. “That’s none of your concern,” she finally answered. “Shit. What’ve you brought to our doorstep?” The whole Vessel thing was bad enough, but a tribe bent on revenge wasn’t good. Not at all. “It was foretold that we’d be here, so here we are. Nothing can be done about it now.” Ive sounded so sure of herself. He would almost have believed her if it wasn’t for the tremor in her hand. “Fuck. After this is over, you’d both better come clean to Russ. There is no way we can protect against what we don’t know. You of all people should know this. Protector my ass.” “Enough. This isn’t about me. You’re supposed to be learning control and so far all you’ve managed is to mouth off.” Ive sounded exasperated. It was nice to see some passion in her eyes. Maybe she wasn’t a cold fish. The ice queen attitude got old fast. “Are we almost there?” He kept the whine from his voice, barely. Max wiped his sweaty hands on his jeans. He was nervous, damn it, and time was getting away from them. He hated this caged-in feeling. He wanted to pace, but there was no room. “You’d better hope not. Now focus. When you start to get angry, you need to find your centre.” Ive placed a hand over her abdomen, like that would help him somehow. “Kind of hard when she is being held by Dmitri.” Max really didn’t want to think about what could be happening, but his mind kept forcing him back there. “Valerie can’t be your only centre. There has to be something else you can use,” she insisted. The SUV went into a pothole, throwing them around. It gave him time to think about something that could be his centre beside Valerie. Any thing that could help him focus. Max thought of the meadow where he’d made love to Valerie. The breeze caressing their bodies.

The grass rubbing against them. His hand in her hair. How his electricity had brought her to release. Sex. His ground was sex. Valerie would laugh. He vowed never to tell her. “I’ve got it.” “What is it?” Ive wanted to know. “Doesn’t matter, Ive. I have a focus. What now?” No fuckin’ way was he telling Icy Bitch Monster about it. Not happening this century. “Well, there’s no time to go over spells. So if you need to fight and don’t want to shift, you’ll have to learn to focus your anger so your energy bolts go where you want them to. It’s not like we can practice that here, so you’re going to have to ‘field test’ and see how you do. Just remember your centre. Use it. Let the anger simmer on the back burner. Still there, but at your mercy, not you at your anger’s bidding.” “Control. Got it. No need to beat my head in with it. That’ll just piss me off more and I thought we wanted me calm.” Another pothole had him bracing himself against the side. “Fuck, Russ, drive much?” The need to release the energy pulsing inside him was strong. He was going to blow soon. They needed to get there already. Joy finally spoke up. “You’ll get your calm, Max. It comes with practice. When things settle down, V and I’ll take you to Catherine. She helped us both through a lot. We will save V.” She patted his hand. His sister. He didn’t think he’d ever get used to that. Sure he had the pack, but to have a blood relative after all this time was hard to wrap his head around. He knew nothing about her. Did he want to? He didn’t even have to think about it. Max wanted to know her. He hated that they could have had some sort of relationship years ago if his father had spoken up. Sometimes he could kick the shit out of the bastard. Now there was no time. That wasn’t helping his anger. Max focussed on the smell of Valerie’s skin. The way her kisses tasted. How it felt to sink into her and be surrounded by her. Having her wrapped around him was heaven. He’d been right. Valerie was home, and no way was he losing that before he even got a chance to indulge in the mated life. For the first time, he wanted what Bella and David had. Waking up next to Valerie for the next fifty years would do it. Hell, he’d take a hundred years. No way could he get tired of the way she made the dark days brighter.

Who the hell was he and what had happened to the bastard who wouldn’t give her the time of day? He didn’t know, but he wasn’t going back. Max jerked out of his seat. “Something’s wrong.” He looked frantically around for an escape route. He needed out of this vehicle. He had to shift and hunt. The brakes slammed on and he was hurled through the enclosed space and slammed against the front seat. “What is it?” Russ turned back. “Valerie. Something’s wrong. I—fuck, man—I can feel it. She’s hurt,” Max snarled. “How?” Ive asked in disbelief. “It must be their mating bond. I’ve heard of it in the past, but those were rumours.” Russ turned back and started the SUV again. “I’ll drive as fast as I can. We’re almost there. Hold on.” How could he hold on when his life was bleeding somewhere he couldn’t get to her? He howled and shifted. He was bringing that fucker down.
**** “Kill, kill, kill.” The voice was faint. Djimon wrestled control from the being inside him. Something big was about to happen. He could feel it in the vibration of his soul. He stalked through the house looking for the thing that was his doom. That stupid piece of pottery that had changed everything. The evil coursed through his veins. He felt dirty, but alive for the first time in decades. Too long he had left control to the other. No more. He’d fight the being to his death if he must. Djimon didn’t know why now was any different. He’d done a lot of killing over the years. Or he’d watched from the inside. Lethargic and unresponsive. A ghost in his own body. The last straw had been when the woman downstairs had tumbled to her death. The words this Dmitri spoke were wrong. That death would be the last at his hands, unless it was his own. He wouldn’t be pacified in the dark any longer. “Kill, kill, kill.” “No!” Djimon screamed out loud.

He was taking over. He’d find a way to dislodge the spirit inside if it was the last thing he did. The damn Vessel was nowhere to be found. Every room he entered was barren. He thought he was in a warehouse. Where would be anyone’s guess. “Soon. Kill. Kill. Soon. Kill.” “Your time is done, you bastard. Go back to hell where you belong! Where is the Vessel?” he raged at himself, tearing at his hair. With a roar, Djimon shifted. His cat paced back and forth. He inhaled, hoping to scent the evil, but the only thing filling his nose was blood. So much blood. He shook off his ripped clothes and stalked around the warehouse. What was that? A smell. Something didn’t belong. It was—off somehow. Could it be? Djimon charged the wall. He ricocheted off the concrete. The force caused him to shift back. Naked and dazed, he looked at the structure in front of him. He shook his head and staggered up. It was there. He knew it. Be smart about it. Smart. Djimon closed his eyes and focussed on putting his hands in front of him. “Kom na my. Kom na my. Kom na my!” Power infused his body. He felt strong. Better than he had since his tribe had been destroyed. This was what he was meant to do. Djimon pushed his power towards the wall, and the force surrounding it shattered, and there it was. The Vessel. The evil thing that had caused all his suffering. “No. Kill. Kill. Let me help Dmitri. Kill. They are here. Kill. Your duty. Kill.” “Not this time.” The pain dropped him to his knees. “I’m—not—Dmitri. I. Am. Djimon!” “I will take over, Djimon. Don’t get too comfortable in control. That body is mine. Promised to me. And I will take it.” “Fuck—you.” Djimon crawled towards the Vessel. He was so close. Just a few feet more and it would be his. He could destroy it. Djimon used the last of his strength to topple the pedestal over. The Vessel crashed to the floor. The sound echoed through the deserted room. A sob welled up in his chest. The pottery didn’t even crack. His hold on his body was slipping. He could feel Dmitri clawing his way to the surface.

The Vessel glowed. Djimon shielded his eyes. When he could open them, he saw an urn shape floating in the air. The pedestal righted itself and the wall formed again. If an inanimate object could smirk, the Vessel would have been. A vibe of satisfaction seeped from the wall. “No!” Djimon pounded his fist into the ground. The pull was stronger. Dmitri was winning. He was pushed back farther and farther from himself, until his consciousness was trapped deep inside once again. He felt his body move and a voice not quite his own spoke. “Now, I believe I said ‘kill’. Can you hear me, Djimon? The first person going down will be that lush redhead that is supposed to be yours. I wonder if she tastes as sweet as she looks. Guess we’ll both find out soon.” The evil chuckle surrounded him, but Djimon had no strength to fight it. That last burst of power had taken too much out of him. His hope…slipping away.
**** Max’s wolf jumped from the SUV. He howled and charged the abandoned-looking warehouse. His mate was there, and hurt. He had to get to her. When he reached the perimeter something was off. What was it? His hackles rose. Something evil permeated the surroundings. His wolf backed off. He’d have to shift back. Fuck. His power was stronger in wolf form. That was what he knew, what he could control. Double fuck. He shifted and stood still with his head cocked. He still couldn’t get what was wrong. Sure, evil. They’d all known that there would be a fight when it came time to rescue Valerie. He was ready. Clothes appeared in front of his face. “Put these on.” Russ patted his back. “It is good you stopped, Max. There is powerful magic at work here. The whole building is protected.” Zareb stepped close to Max. “I—there was something that stopped me. It felt—wrong.” Max shrugged, not sure what else to say. “Your senses are good. overtaken if that is the case. Watch out for those black beings you saw before, Max. If I am correct, those are souls from the Vessel. They are very dangerous and will try to possess you.” “Is that is what you think happened to my Djimon?” Ive spoke quietly behind Max. “Yes, sister-mate. I think that is exactly what happened. I am hoping it did not corrupt him, but it is another soul doing these foul things.” Max watched Zareb squeeze Ive’s hand. This was the first time Ive had shown any vulnerability. Still didn’t make him like her any more. She’d kept Valerie from him. He growled. “Calm down. I will get us in, Max.” Max let Zareb think that was why he had growled. He had to shake it off. The anger welled again and his magic was closer to the surface than his wolf. Zareb started chanting his mumbo-jumbo and Max tuned him out. He needed to focus his energy on Valerie. The need to reach her pulsed within him. Hurry, hurry, hurry “Fuck this.” Max let loose all the anger he’d been feeling. Light shot from his hand and he aimed it at the building. He moved closer and closer. “Come on, bitch, open the fuck up. Now!” he screamed and continued on. Blast after blast hit the invisible field until he felt it. A crack. His mind searched for the weak link, his aim true until the whole thing collapsed. The smell of blood was strong. “Max!” He wasn’t sure who shouted, but he didn’t care. He was going in. Nothing would stop him from finding Valerie, and if she wasn’t all right, someone would die.

Why did her head hurt? Where was she? She knew she should hurry, but not why. Her eyes were heavy and she wanted to sleep some more, but something told her that would be a bad idea. She needed to get up off the floor. A wave of power flowed through her and shook the whole room. It turned her over and forced her across the floor. Yes, she was on the floor. Where was her bed? Maybe Mom will know. I should get up and ask. Honey, you’re not at home. But, baby girl, you need to get up. It’s going down now. What’s going down? Do you know where I’m at? Not exactly, but I know that evil is headed your way and you need to get off that floor and protect yourself. I want grandchildren. Now get up. Don’t make me tell you again. Yes, ma’am. No matter where her mother was, that tone meant business. Trying to ignore her pounding head, she used the column beside her to help her up. That brought up a memory. She’d been chained to this very thing. The bindings were still hanging there. It was coming back, slowly. She’d been kidnapped while in wolf form. Valerie’s brow crinkled in concentration. Not a good idea. She grabbed her head, the pain was so intense. She leaned over and vomited on the floor. Not that she had anything left but stomach acid. The heaving hurt worse, but she couldn’t stop it. She wiped her mouth with her hand. God, the smell. But, wolf. She was a wolf? Yes, and something else—just outside her grasp. There was someone—Max. Her memories flooded her head. She had to sit back down. So much to process. She must have really knocked her head. Her ribs hurt and she noticed that her back ached. That field had bounced her off the floor. No wonder she was having issues. A scraping sound had her looking around for a place to hide. Or something she could use. “It’s time, pretty girl. Don’t worry. I won’t kill you first. I have other scores to settle. Where are you? You can’t hide forever. Your mate is here. Don’t you want to see him before he dies?”

Valerie ignored the taunts. What could she use? Shit, the chains. But she couldn’t get them down without making a noise. Not like she had many choices. No way was this bastard killing Max. Wait. Was that her mom again? No, dumbass, this is your voice of reason. Djimon is inside that body. You can’t kill him. He’s innocent. Remember? God, she was messed up. It was hard enough to think without her inner snark coming out. She got it. She couldn’t kill Dmitri, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t hurt the bastard. He was a shifter, he’d heal. The rattle startled her, but she continued to yank the chains off the post. “Ah, there you are. Just what do you hope to accomplish?” Dmitri stalked closer. It was now or never. Her power was hard to reach through the pain. She dug in deep and hurled the chains with a magical force. “Don’t hurt me.” The voice changed in the man before her. She tugged back on the chains to lighten the blow. “Djimon? Is that you?” She didn’t want to hurt him. Damn it. Where was Max? The others? Someone. Valerie wanted to curl into herself. Her power was already waning. She didn’t have much to begin with. “You humans are so easy,” Dmitri chuckled. “A sucker for the weak. Djimon isn’t coming out any time soon. In fact, he is going to vacate this body as soon as I’m finished here.” Valerie backed away, but was no match for the stronger shifter. He wrapped her in power and forced her up the steps. The light hurt her eyes. It was bright at the top. She must have been in a sub-level. She still couldn’t tell where she was. “Where”—she licked her dry lips—“are we?” “No need to worry. Not that it matters anyway. You’ll be dead soon. Or your soul will. I have plans for that body. Some friends want to come out and play.” That didn’t sound good at all. No way was she going to let some sick bastard from hell posses her body. She needed her head to stop hurting and to get her calm back. Her scattered thinking helped no one. He vision started to tunnel. Valerie was going to pass out.

No. An inner strength she didn’t know she had bubbled up, and she shifted. Max. He was there. She could smell him. She called out to him, but to no avail. Silence greeted her. Valerie did find her head had stopped thumping. That was good. “No so fast.” A rope circled her head. She moved to get out of the lasso, but she was trapped again. Fuck, fuck, fuck. Could nothing go right? She shifted back to human form. Her battered clothes dropped around her. She used her hand to remove the rope and dashed away, shifting mid-run. The shifting must have been healing her. Her power flowed strong and true. Max’s scent was stronger. She had to reach him. Valerie was tackled from behind. Rope circled her paws. Dmitri had hog-tied her. Even if she shifted back to human, she would be stuck. “I said, not so fast. I have plans and you aren’t fucking them up.” Valerie couldn’t move no matter how hard she tried. Dmitri put a muzzle over her snout. She was helpless. Vulnerable in a way she’d never been before. She could only watch as Dmitri walked to a wall and disappeared. She was alone. Max had to find her. Soon. Valerie didn’t know how much longer she could hold on. Her power was back and her body no longer broken, but the madman in the other room could go crazy at any minute and kill her. Dmitri reappeared holding a—vase? What could that be? Not the all-powerful Vessel. It looked so…harmless. Valerie concentrated on the object. The evil emanating from it jerked her focus away. That—thing—was older than time. There was more to it than just being an object. Something controlled it and, if she wasn’t mistaken, there were souls trapped inside. The screams in her head got louder and louder. They wanted to get out. Things were turning from bad to worse. She couldn’t let Dmitri open that thing. Valerie wondered what controlled it. The power was great. She shifted back. Maybe talking would work. A roar in the distance gave her pause. Max. She’d know that growl anywhere. The muzzle was no use in human form. Before Dmitri could reach her she shouted. “Max! Be careful,” Valerie screamed with all her might. Dmitri slapped her. Her ears ringing, she continued to call for her love.

“Be silent.” Dmitri went for the opening. No. “Djimon?” a sweet voice echoed off the walls. Valerie moved around to see who it was. Ive. Now, that she hadn’t expected. She should have. Ive was Djimon’s mate. If they had any hope, it was Ive getting through to Djimon, forcing Dmitri back inside. “Wait! That isn’t Djimon. Dmitri is in control,” Valerie warned. The struggle in the man made him drop the Vessel. It bounced once and rolled away. Max rushed to her side. “Are you okay?” He ran his hands over her body. Now was not the time to get turned on, but she wanted nothing more than to wrap herself around him and lose herself in their bond. “Untie me and I’ll be fine. We have to help Djimon get control. That is the only way we’ll win this. Dmitri said something about Djimon being too weak. But maybe with Ive here we can do—something. It can’t end this way. We can’t kill Dmitri without getting rid of Djimon.” “I don’t give a fuck who it is. You were hurt. I could feel it.” “I was, but shifting helped. I—I was worried, but I’m happy you’re here now.” Max fumbled with the rope and muzzle, but finally she was free. Valerie saw Zareb and Ive surrounding Dmitri. She moved closer. Max went to stop her, but she wouldn’t let him. “We have to help him, Max,” Valerie pleaded. “God damn it.” Max kissed her on the forehead and pushed her behind him. She had to smile. He was so gruff, and all hers. She couldn’t wait to get him alone and thank him. The struggle for Djimon continued. Zareb, Ive and Max surrounded Dmitri. With them busy, Valerie looked around to see if she could find the Vessel. There weren’t many places it could hide. There were no hidden crevices—the building was pretty much empty. There. She spotted it in the general direction Dmitri had come from earlier. It looked—cut in half. That couldn’t be right. Valerie moved closer to investigate. It appeared to be a wall of power. She hesitantly put a hand out, only to be jerked away. “I’m not a magic user, but even I know that’s a bad idea.” “Russ. Where did you come from?”

“I was right behind Max, but I can see how you’d be distracted.” He chuckled. She laughed back. “Okay, no touching, but I have to figure out how to get the Vessel out of there.” “You could always just do what your mate did and force it open. He was like a battering ram.” Was that admiration she heard in Russ’ tone? “What?” “We got here and there was a magic field keeping us out. Zareb was going with ease and your man just pushed through.” “That must have been what I felt. It shook the whole building.” Valerie looked back to see if they’d made any progress. Magic swirled in the air, but Valerie had a hard time distinguishing the user. She looked back at the vase. Her mind made up, she grabbed the visible end and pulled it. Nothing happened. She tried one more time and it came free. Evil pulsed around the thing. The lid looked like it was about to open. She couldn’t let that happen. With Russ by her side, they went to the others. “Djimon, come out, push this demon back,” Ive was coaxing. “He’s dead to you, bitch. You’re too late,” Dmitri screamed. “We need to get him to a secure location so I can banish the demon. Then he’ll be free.” Zareb looked at Ive. “Are we really too late?” Ive questioned. Max was silent through the whole exchanged. Valerie could see the wheels turning in his head. He was up to something, but what? Zareb held out a hand and closed his eyes. They popped open a second later. “He is still there, but he is weak. I am not sure how much longer he can hold on.” Max smashed his fist into Dmitri’s face. The other man crumpled to the ground. “Max!” they all shouted in unison. “What?” He gave an innocent shrug. Valerie snorted. “You didn’t have to do that.” “Yes. I did. It was either that or fry his ass. You didn’t want me to do that, so I settled for the lesser of the two evils. Anyway, he shut up, didn’t he? Maybe it will buy us some time.”

Ive knelt by Dmitri/Djimon and pressed a hand to his throat. “He still lives, but we must hurry.” Valerie went to Max. The vase teetered in her arms and fell to the ground. A hazy black form seeped out of the top. The lid must have got loose. Only problem, was this the big almighty bad or one of its minions? “Stand back. Someone grab Djimon. We cannot let that touch him. Who knows what damage it will inflict.” Zareb went for the Vessel. Russ moved to pick Djimon up. Max helped and they headed for the door. “Come on, Valerie,” Max demanded and held out a hand. “Not yet. I need to help Ive and Zareb contain this thing before more damage is done.” Valerie ran up to Max and kissed his lips. “I’ll be there soon.” Max squeezed her tight. “You’d better be or I’m coming back, and you sure as hell don’t want that.” He glared at her. She winked back and went to Zareb’s side, giving this new danger her full attention. “We need to focus our powers and get that thing back inside. Do not let it touch you or it will try to posses you.” Zareb gave her and Ive a stern look and moved into place. The three circled around and held hands. Zareb chanted while Valerie concentrated on pushing the force back in. Ive’s hand shook in hers. Their fingers almost slipped apart, but Valerie clutched Ive’s hand tightly. That damn thing would not win. No way, not after all the shit she’d been through. It was time to get home to her mate. They had time to make up for. And she still had to tell Max she loved him. The Vessel vibrated and rattled on the floor. The black being screeched. It was working. The force of the three of them pushed the thing back into the vase. It wasn’t happy. “Zareb, just what is this thing?” Valerie asked as the man picked up the clay vat of evil. “It is a tool,” was all Zareb would say. Valerie knew there was more to that story, but she didn’t press—too much. “You can feel the evil, can’t you?” Ive questioned. “I can.” Zareb nodded. “Then why did the two of you pick it up in the first place?” Valerie had to know. Zareb wasn’t stupid. Him and Djimon had to be smart to be picked as guardians. “It masked itself at the time.” Still short answers from the cat shifter. “Are you in danger now? Are we?” Ive asked.

“No. At least not right now. We need to get it quarantined. Then I need to speak to Russ. Things need to be planned.” Valerie would be interested to find out what things needed to be planned. As far as she was concerned, she thought they should destroy the damn thing now, before it caused more trouble. It appeared she wasn’t the only one. “Break it, Zareb. Before it does more damage.” “I wish it were that simple, sister-mate.” The trio left the building. Zareb had the Vessel clutched in his hands. Valerie could still feel the evil, even if it was muted. That thing was strong. It held more power than Valerie had ever sensed in one spot—ever. They reached the SUV and there was Max. Valerie smiled brightly. Evil could wait. He opened his arms and she rushed into them. The warmth of home surrounded her. This was where she was supposed to be. The rest would have to work itself out. “Let’s get back to the compound. I think we need to have a meeting.” “Yes, we do. There is much to discuss,” Zareb agreed with Russ. Russ looked at Zareb and nodded. Valerie couldn’t read the expression on Russ’ face, but his aura blazed a dark, muddy blue. All was not well in the shifter world. Valerie just hoped her new family wasn’t falling apart before her eyes. She hugged Max tightly before getting into the SUV, her future as unsure as when she was stuck in the warehouse. Valerie stood taller. Enough of that. She wouldn’t allow the negative energy to bring her down. If it was in her power, everything would work out. Wouldn’t it? She bit her lip and looked out of the window, watching the rush of scenery fly by, lost in thought.

Chapter Thirteen
Max wanted to take Valerie to his room and fuck the hell out of her. His wolf paced inside, wanting a piece too. Her scent drove him nuts and it had been too long. With the danger thrown in, he was ready to explode. The meeting had better move quickly, because his control slipped by the minute. Everything was on hold while Zareb secured Dmitri. Max couldn’t think of the man as anything else. He didn’t trust him and never would. Not even Valerie could convince him of that. He’d hurt her, damn it. For that, Dmitri deserved to be put down. Out of everyone’s misery. Even his own. It was the humane thing to do. Max crossed his arms over his chest. Ross sent one of the wolves to get David, Bell, Joy, Vivian, Erin and Scott. All the other people the Ancients had declared the future of the tribe. Nonsense if you asked him, but nobody did. They all trickled in like they had all the time in the world. Fuck this. He moved to tug Valerie out of the room, but she calmed him with a hand on his arm. She leaned over and whispered in his ear. “A little more time and I’ll let you fuck me like there is no tomorrow. Hell, I’ll beg you for it. I’ll let you pound away and—” “So not helping,” Max said through clenched teeth. She giggled and licked his ear before settling against his side, pulling him onto the couch so she could curl up in his lap. Finally, all the key players were there. Russ shut the door and strode to his desk. He hesitated, something Max had never seen before. He sat up straighter. The others in the room tensed as well. What the fuck? “Zareb, maybe you should—” Russ gestured for Zareb to take the floor. They shared a look before Zareb spoke. This uncertainty made Max worry. It wasn’t good for the pack for their alpha to smell like fear. That was a good way to lose power, and there was no one Max would stand behind like Russ. They needed to fix this. And quickly. He looked around to see if any of the others

were in attack mode. He didn’t care who they were, but if they tried to take down Russ, Max would kill them. He knew where his true loyalties lay. He was happy to see the others just as worried as him. “It is time I left.” That statement was unexpected. Russ was the first to respond. “What do you mean? For good?” “I am not sure. I need to take the Vessel back to Africa. I will take Djimon with me. If there is a way to save him, I think where it happened is the best spot to try. I leave tomorrow.” “I’m going, too.” Ive and Joy spoke at the same time. “Joy!” Valerie stood. “No. I have to go.” Joy moved to Valerie’s side and whispered, “For better or worse, we are mates. I need to help. I can’t stay.” Joy looked over at Zareb. “He’s going to need me.” “Premonition?” Valerie questioned. “I don’t know, but I have to go.” “Mom could—” Valerie tried. “She could, but this is my destiny.” Joy moved beside Zareb. “I’m going,” she said in a louder tone. “I think this part of the discussion is over. Joy and I will accompany Zareb on this quest. It’s for the best,” Ive said. “You overstep yourself again, sister-mate,” Zareb reprimanded. “What about me?” Vivian’s soft voice spoke up. “No!” The first confident thing Russ had said in the past couple of minutes. “Fear not, alpha,” Zareb stressed the title. “Your mate will not accompany us. Ive should stay here as well.” “Djimon is my mate and I will go. You’re correct, though. Vivian will stay.” “So you’ll just leave her here for your pack to take back. You didn’t tell Russ, did you, Ive?” Max wouldn’t let Ive get away with leaving like nothing was going on. “What don’t I know?” Russ moved forwards. “Tell him or I will,” Max threatened. “He has a right to know before you leave.”

Ive nodded. “Vivian and I left our tribe in the dead of night with a group of hunters on our tail. They did’nt know the princess was leaving. I had a dream-vision and knew we couldn’t waste time. If we did, our fate would have been sealed as well as yours.” “It wasn’t her fault,” Vivian spoke up. “Enough. We’ll deal with this later. We need to take care of the Vessel and Djimon. If that is what you are calling him now. Zareb, do you think this is the end of the trials the Ancients spoke of?” Russ settled back to his desk. Max’s strong alpha was back. His wolf eased inside him. “The Vessel is a tool. The evil had no real name, so we always called it the Vessel, but the actual object is a tool to hold souls condemned in life. A possessed person, like Djimon, is usually in charge. Or I should say Dmitri. The reason the guardians were brought forth was because this—thing—challenged the Ancients. There has to be a balance. Most of us hear that at one time or another. To have good, there must be evil. For a while, the evil was stagnant. Then we unearthed the Vessel, giving it a hold in the world. Since that day, it has tried to eliminate the very thing the Ancients created. “Chaos is what it craves, and if you are favoured by good it will bring you down in any way it can. This is not over. It never will be. But the tribes or packs now need to bond together and become the guardians the Ancients wanted us to be. It will be our job to save the humans from a threat they know nothing of. And we need to keep it that way.” “So you plan to—what? Bury the thing again so someone else can stumble onto it and cause more shit?” Max scoffed. “Yes, Max. We will bury it. But we are better prepared this time. There will be a watch put over it and powerful magics will be used to shield it. Do you think I went through millennia of hell to let another accident happen?” “Just how old are you?” Joy gaped at Zareb. In an unexpected fit of play, Zareb winked at Joy. It was Max’s turn to look on in astonishment. The others in the room watched the byplay as well. Max noticed they looked just as stunned. “What about the prophecy that was spoken of when the Ancients took Sebastian?” Bella wanted to know.

“They said all of your children will be a part of making this pack strong. That still holds true,” Zareb stated. “Yours, too,” Bella interrupted. “What?” Joy yelled. “Everyone in this room is a part of it. Our children will be the future. All of ours. When the time is right,” Bella relayed. “And it’s true. I’ve seen it. We will grow and be strong, but we still have wars to fight.” “Then what’re we waiting for?” Ive turned to leave the room. “Not so fast, Ive. The others can leave, but you and Vivian have some explaining to do.” Russ dismissed the pack. Max didn’t need to be told twice. He grabbed Valerie and headed for the door. “Wait.” Max growled at his mate. “What do you mean, wait?” “Joy is leaving. Who knows when we’ll see her again? I need to say goodbye.” “Hurry.” Valerie laughed at him. He was serious, though. He needed reassurance that Valerie was okay and really his. Nothing short of joining with her would do that. “I’ll be a second. Why don’t you go to the room? I’ll meet you there.” “Five minutes and I’m coming back down and carrying you there.” He kissed her and stormed out of the room. He was serious, too. He looked at his watch and timed her.
**** Valerie chuckled as she watched Max leave. She knew he was serious. She wanted to hurry, too. Words needed to be spoken, but she couldn’t let Joy leave without talking to her. “Are you sure?” That was all she said. “No. But I have to,” Joy responded. “Who’s going to tell Mom? She’s going to want to protect you and see you before you leave.” “There’s no time. You’ll have to do it. Sorry, V. There is no way I’m giving him a chance to leave me behind. And he will. You and I both know it. This is too important.” Joy glanced at Zareb.

“Damn it,” Valerie sighed. “I know you’re right. I’ll do it. Maybe Max will be a good buffer. Give her a project.” “Now there is something I’d want to see.” Joy grinned. “Be safe. I mean it.” Valerie squeezed Joy to her. “If I could interrupt.” Bella walked up to them. “Take this with you, Joy.” Bella unclasped a necklace she’d been wearing. Valerie took a closer look. It was a wolf pendant. “What’s this for?” Joy asked. “It is a connection to us. I—my mom gave that to me. It will protect you.” “Bella, I can’t take this,” Joy protested. “You must. I dreamt it. You’ll need it.” “For what?” Valerie asked. “I don’t know. I can’t always interpret the dreams, but the important part was giving the pendant to Joy. Wear it. Stay safe and come back to us.” Bella kissed Joy’s cheek and walked off hand in hand with David. “Well, that was weird,” Joy stated, but she put on the jewellery. “This whole thing has been a study in weird.” “But you’re happy?” Joy looked nervous. “Yes. Happier than I think I’ve ever been.” Valerie hugged Joy again. “Now go get ready and, like I said, stay safe and call on me if you need to. You know I’ll do whatever’s in power to protect you.” “I know. Love you.” Joy moved out of the hug. “Love you too. And don’t you forget it.” Valerie turned to leave. “Never,” she thought she heard Joy whisper, but she wasn’t sure. Time’s almost up. Valerie smiled and moved up the stairs. Life was good. Better than good. No matter what evil might be out there, she was ready to face it. With her family. She looked back down at Joy, all of her family. And she’d kill anyone who took that from her. Now it was time to appease the beast. She whistled, her soul infused with happiness, ready to get down and dirty with her very own wolf. Life was good.

Epilogue
A week later “Max. We need to get out of bed.” Valerie nudged her lover. He grunted. Valerie knew how to get him up. She wiggled under the covers. The great thing about sleeping naked was all the access to skin. So much wonderful skin to taste and touch and—bite. Valerie nibbled her way down his body. His cock was already responding. She had him in her clutches. Valerie nuzzled his balls and took one in her mouth. Mmmm…salty. Max shifted his legs so she could settle between them. She licked his sac before enjoying another taste of him. When she had him good and wet, she moved to lick his shaft from base to tip. He’d started leaking pre-cum. Valerie licked her lips before taking the head in her mouth. The taste exploded on her tongue. She wanted more. Valerie wanted it all. Wanted Max to shoot down her throat. She moaned around his cock at the thought of him coming in her mouth. Max’s hips moved and he tangled his hands in her hair. Valerie came off his cock. His hands tightened for a second before releasing her. “I see you’re awake now. Ready to get up?” she teased and mumbled against his skin. “Something is up and interested.” His gravelly just-woken-up voice answered as he swerved his hips. “We have places to be.” She gave him a lick. “Stop teasing, love.” “Love? Well, all right then.” Valerie moved to continue Max’s morning blow job, when he pulled her out from under the covers. “Come here, you.” “I thought you wanted—” “I want inside you more than your mouth wrapped around me.” He nipped at her lips and she let him in. His kiss touched her to her toes. She could feel him in every particle of her being. His scent surrounded her and she revelled in it. Valerie wrapped around his body, her pussy

soaked. She ached to feel his hard hot cock sliding in her, connecting them on every possible level. Until she could feel him in her soul. Mates. This was what it was all about. The total immersion in the only other person in the world who mattered. “I need you inside me, Max. Now. I can’t wait. Please,” Valerie begged. “No need to beg, baby. Take what you need.” Valerie groaned and impaled herself on his thick length. It was Max’s turn to moan. Valerie rocked back and forth, Max’s hands at her hips, urging her on. He sat up with her in his arms, never losing contact. Valerie wrapped her legs around him and he cupped her ass. Faster and faster she moved on his body. Max buried his head in her neck. A hot button she hadn’t known she had. She bent back and put her hands on the bed, changing her angle just enough so that he could pinch her nipples. That went straight to her pussy. God, she loved this man. His mouth wandered down her body to take a nipple in his mouth. He suckled and bit. That was all it took. He didn’t even have to touch her clit. She went off like a firecracker. “Max! Max. Love you.” “Love.” He thrust hard inside her. “You.” Again. “Too.” Max crushed Valerie to him. Safe. Not only did he make her feel his was her home, but she felt safe and content. And only a small urge to call the paper. Even though she was technically on leave. Max settled them back on the bed and pulled them both under the covers. Valerie closed her eyes. They did have to get up soon, but she relished the time they spent together. “I really do love you, you big lug,” Valerie said, rubbing her cheek against his hairy chest. “Love you too. Not moving.” Valerie laughed. “Oh yes you are. We have to go see my mom.” Max groaned and pulled the covers over their heads. “I’m not ready.” “You keep saying that. She isn’t going away. And she is anxious to meet you.” “Can we not talk about your mom while we are naked and in bed?” She closed her eyes. They had a few more minutes until they really had to get up. She’d teased him enough.

**** Max tugged on his shirt. He didn’t want to be here, at his mate’s mother’s house. It was a nice house, but he’d rather be in bed with his mate. Next year would have been a good enough time to do this. When their bond was well and truly set. “Stop fidgeting. What—are you three or something?” Valerie snickered and stepped in front of him to knock on the door. Max slapped her on the ass. “Enough sass, woman.” The door in front of him opened and he wanted the porch to swallow him whole. “It’s about time someone told Valerie what was what,” the petite woman in the doorway proclaimed. Shit. This was not the impression he’d wanted to make. “Mom!” “What, child? Like I don’t know my own daughter. Come on in, you two. Lunch is on the table.” Max followed the two women inside, mortified beyond belief. What a first impression. Things had to get better, didn’t they? “Now, Mom, you don’t want to scare him away, do you?” “Big strong man like him, I don’t think he scares easily. Plus, he needs to get used to me sooner or later if I’m going to be his teacher.” “What?” Max looked between the two of them. “About that—” Valerie started. “Valerie Roxanne Thomas! You didn’t tell him, did you?” “Roxanne?” Max smiled. “Okay, okay. Enough. No, Mom, I didn’t tell him yet. We were—” She looked over at him and blushed a pretty shade of red. “Busy.” Valerie cleared her throat. “I thought we could talk about it at lunch today.” “For over a week!” Now it was Max’s turn. His face felt hot, but he resisted putting his hands on his cheeks. “Didn’t you say something about lunch?” Valerie asked. She took his hand and led him into the dining area.

“It smells wonderful, Mrs Thomas.” “Catherine. Please, call me Cathy.” Max nodded and took a seat at the table. Valerie had never said anything about her father. The big man sat at the head of the table and didn’t say a word. “Dad, this is Max. Max, this is my dad, Henry.” “Sir.” Max came halfway out of his chair and held out a hand. The crushing grip would have hurt if he was human. He let the man win the power struggle. This was the father of his mate. He would respect him in his own home. “Max.” Henry let go of Max’s hand. They passed food around the table in companiable silence and once everyone was served the questions began. Max could see that Valerie came by it honestly. Her mother could give her a run for her money. “So, Max, I hear you recently came into your powers. How is that possible?” Cathy started. “I’m not sure, ma’am. I—” “Cathy,” she interrupted with a smile. “Cathy. I’m not sure. I grew up with my pack. My father had the magic and he wasn’t around,” Max stated. “Are you willing to train with me?” Cathy asked between bites, not even commenting on his father. The food really was delicious. Too bad they were ruining it with talk. He should have expected it, though. This is why he didn’t meet families. Hell, he was distant enough in his own pack. “If you and Valerie think I should. I don’t have much control yet.” “I’ll take that as a yes,” Cathy said. There wasn’t too much talking after that. Just polite chit-chat. Henry still didn’t say much. He observed. Max liked that. All in all, it wasn’t too bad. His first impression of the home and the people in it was—comfort. He could sense Valerie all around. They moved to the living room and Valerie settled in against his side. His need to touch her strong, he reached for her hand and entwined their fingers. Calm and comfort coursed through his body. Only she could make him truly at peace with himself. “You glow,” he heard Cathy say.

He must have tuned out, because he had no idea what she was talking about. “Excuse me?” he questioned. “When the two of you hold hands or touch, you glow. It’s—warm and safe. I’m happy Valerie found that. Thank you, Max,” Cathy commented. He was at a loss for what to say to that. He should be the one thanking her. “Don’t embarrass him, Mom.” Valerie tightened her grip. “What are your intentions, young man?” Henry finally spoke. This was the conversation he’d been dreading. “Well, sir, that’s up to Valerie. We’re mated. I’m not sure what you know about wolves, but we mate for life. She’s mine.” That earned him a half-grin from Henry. “Yours, huh? Good thing I’m keeping you.” Valerie laughed and her mother joined in. “We should get started, if you’re up to it, Max. I can teach you a couple exercises I had the girls use when they first came into their power. Come along.” He got up, but Valerie stayed on the couch. He looked at her expectantly. “What?” “Aren’t you coming?” he asked. “You don’t need me.” Valerie shook her head. “But I do. You’re my centre.” He managed a quick glance at her folks before continuing. God, he wished they were alone for this. Shit. He had to finish. “You calm me. When I’m about to fuck—um, mess—up, having you there balances me.” Valerie launched herself off the couch and into his arms. If they were alone he’d have dragged her to a room and fucked her silly. He wanted to be inside her in the worst way. The only thing that stopped him from kissing her was the sound of her father clearing his throat behind him. Shit. He let Valerie slide down his body and took a step back. Fuck. He was hard. How the hell could he concentrate on school-girl lessons? “Enough, you two. My practice room is through here. By the way, have either of you heard from Joy?” “Not yet, Mom. I’m worried.” “Don’t be. She’ll be fine. I just think she’ll need you. Soon.” “A vision?” Max asked. He hadn’t known Valerie’s mom could do that.

“I do get them, but they are few and far between. Joy’s path isn’t set in stone, but she will need a guiding hand from her brother and sister.” Cathy stumbled and caught herself on the wall. Max rushed to her side. “Are you all right? What happened?” Max righted her and made sure Cathy was steady on her feet before he let go. Valerie hovered around them. “I’m fine. Water. Honey, could you get me a glass?” Valerie rushed away and returned in seconds with a glass. Cathy took a drink before talking. Fuck. This couldn’t be good. What was it with women he knew and this hocus-pocus shit? Couldn’t they for once just be normal wolves? Shift and be happy. But no, he had to be mated to someone with magic. His pack was going to hell in a handbasket for sure. Good thing he loved Valerie. “What is it, Cathy?” Max asked after Cathy had finished her water. “A vision. I had another one.” She reached for Valerie and hugged her to her. Max could only watch as mother and daughter comforted one another. “Mom, is it—” “No, dear, it isn’t Joy. Not this time. This time I fear it’s a little closer to home.” “Dad?” Valerie couldn’t contain her worry. Max needed to comfort her, but he didn’t want to take her from her mom. Helplessness welled up inside him. He held his howl in check. His body vibrated and his hands heated up. “Calm yourself, dear boy. Valerie, go to your man.” Max took a deep breath. In and out. In and out. He closed his eyes and let Valerie’s scent calm his panic. Her arms around him soothed the beast within. His hands cooled and he could once again focus on Cathy and her vision. It had to be important. “If it’s not Joy and it isn’t Dad, who is it? Me? Max?” Valerie squeezed him tightly. He had to move her arms before she strangled him. “It’s your alpha.” He was right. Not good at all. Fuck. Russ was in trouble? He had to go. Now. Warn him—protect him. Valerie started to pet him, his control completely shot. He was about to burn the house down. Shit. In and out. In and out. Control.

“Wow, she really is your centre. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it.” Cathy’s voice held awe. “Valerie’s the reason you came into your powers. If not for her you’d never know—” “Please. You said Russ was in trouble,” Max interrupted. They could talk about him later. “Sorry. Yes. Your alpha is going through a crisis right now. He is going to need the two of you to be strong. Four of his allies are away. The six that are here need to do all they can to protect him. His confidence is shot and he feels like his justice was taken from him with Dmitri still alive.” “Won’t his mate be able to help him?” Valerie asked. “That will be a whole other challenge. There is a war coming.” “Vivian’s tribe. Damn it. They shouldn’t have run. Fuck.” Max’s jerked his head up to look into Cathy’s face. “Um—sorry. My language—” Henry chuckled and slapped him on the back. “She’s heard worse, son.” Max must be out of it, he hadn’t heard the other man enter the hallway. “You’ll be there for your alpha. Of that I have no doubt. But you must be strong. And that means in all of your abilities. There is great power locked away inside you, Max. I’m going to help you reach out and grab it. You are one of the strongest I have come across. Even stronger then Joy at this time. Of course, once she mates I do believe you will be evenly matched,” Cathy assured him. “So in order to help, I’m going to have to fully focus on learning control?” Max sighed. He was letting Cathy teach him to humour Valerie, but now it looked like he was going to have to settle in for the long haul. “Yes. But I feel you’ll have it down in no time. Control is the most important thing and it looks like you’re already learning that.” “Mom, we should go back. Talk to Russ.” “No. Not yet. Lets practice some. Then the two of you can be on your way.” “But—” “Listen to your mother.” “Yes, sir.” Valerie sighed. Max had never seen this side of Valerie. The obedient child. He could use that in his favour.

“I’ll get you for that later.” “Promises, promises.” “I could always withhold sex.” “Whatever you say, babe. Whatever you say. You’ll be jumping my body the second we get back to the pack house and you know it.” “Oh, will I? What, Max? Do you want my lips wrapped around your cock or should I let you have my ass? You did say you wanted it.” “Children, it is rude to talk among yourselves when others are in the room,” Cathy berated them. Valerie pinkened up. It was a good colour for her. Max was sure they were a matching set at this point. “You said something about a room and practice?” Max managed. “I’ll leave you three to it.” Henry left the room. Max wished he was going with him. “This way.” Max followed. Life wasn’t too bad. He had a mate and a family. Things he never thought would be his. Sure, he had his pack, but for the most part he’d stayed on the outside. He had a feeling Valerie wouldn’t allow that to continue. She smiled at him, letting Max know she’d heard his thoughts. Their connection was becoming strong. He sent her a picture of her bent over the desk in his room, her ass raised high with his hand warming her cheeks so they looked as pink as her face. Two could play at that game, obviously, because she sent him back a picture of him tied to the bed and her working his body with her delightful tongue. It would be a long afternoon if they both kept this up, but he was having fun. Him. Grumbly Max Rockwell enjoying himself and not fighting. Cathy turned a corner and Max pulled Valerie to him and took her mouth in a kiss. He eased inside, teasing her by licking her lips and moving his tongue like he was fucking her.
