Chapter One Valor walked through the kennel amused by the sudden silence. The animals knew a dangerous predator was in their midst and didn’t want to draw his attention. Beside him the keeper of the animals kept giving him fearful sideways glances. It was rare that a master vampire picked out his own protector dogs, but Valor wanted to ensure that he could bond with the creatures that guarded him while he slept. If the dogs felt connected to him they were more likely to protect him with their lives. He hadn’t lived over two thousand years by being careless. The increased paranormal hunter activity necessitated that he add to his security. These hunters didn’t care what they caught as long as it was non-human and the stories of the few who escaped capture were enough to make everyone in the paranormal community bump up protection and pull their families closer. No one was going to capture a vampire under Valor’s watch. He protected his own. A pair of steely-eyed Dobermans caught his eye. “What about those two?” The keeper gave a nod. “They’re good security animals, they’re here because the company they were trained for went out of business.” “Ahh. Their loss, my gain. Stephan add them to the total.” The dark-haired vamp trailing behind him made a quiet sound of assent. Stephan wasn’t the most vocal of companions but he was loyal. The quiet vamp had been at Valor’s side for over three hundred years. He trusted Stephan to guard his back and oversee the security detail while Valor concentrated on ruling the vampire tribe under his control. After another walk through, four more dogs were added, two Rottweilers and two mixes. Valor was pleased. “Good selection.” He told the trembling human beside him. “Th-thank you sir.” The keeper said careful not to meet his eyes. Valor didn’t bother hiding his amusement. The idea that a vampire needed to meet the eyes of his prey was a myth. Valor could’ve controlled the guy from across the state if he wanted. He was about to exit the kennel when he heard a low whimper. The sound tugged at him, the noise low and needy, impossible to ignore. It lured him forward like a siren call. Valor turned, scanning the area but even with his excellent night vision he couldn’t make out the far cages. “What’s back there?” “Nothing sir,” the keeper said with suspicious speed, “just a mutt we caught a few weeks ago. He was half starved and something had ripped him apart badly. He sets off the other dogs so we keep him separated from them so there’s no fighting. He’s a sweet pup, not the type you’re looking for.” The keeper was eager to convince Valor that he didn’t need to look at the animal. Too eager.
Another whimper called to Valor. “Let me be the judge of that.” Following the sound, he reached a large cage with a golden brown dog inside. Well-muscled, the creature had a shiny coat that glowed even in the darkness. Its large amber eyes looked up at him imploringly. Help me, the words whispered into his mind. Valor’s head snapped back, instinctively trying to repel the mental invasion. It took him a moment to realize what it meant. Werekin. He looked into the dog’s eyes and saw the intelligence shining out of them. There was something more in the creature’s gaze than the other animals he’d chosen that night. Human understanding. “I’ll take this one.” “But sir, he wouldn’t make a very good guard dog. He doesn’t have a mean bone in him.” The keeper protested. Valor turned and found the man had dredged up the courage to meet his eyes in order to protect the beautiful animal. Valor gave him a smile he knew humans found irresistibly appealing. “I won’t use him as a guard, I want him for a pet.” He said in his most persuasive voice. Relief crossed the human’s face. “In that case I’d be happy to let you have him. He needs a good home. I’d adopt him myself but the missus said if I brought home another animal she’d put me in the dog house.” “We can’t have that now can we?” He agreed amiably. Valor nodded towards the dog. “What’s his name?” “I call him Prince.” Valor could see the human blush even in the dim lighting. “I know it’s a common name for dogs but for some reason, it really suits him.” “Hmmm.” Valor looked at the creature for a moment. “Let’s get the Prince out of there so I can take him to his new home.” *** Caden watched the tall vampire through the bars. It had been a risk asking for help from one of the undead, but if he didn’t get the hell out of here soon the pack would find him. He’d already stayed longer than he planned and he knew his brother’s pack would’ve started hunting him once they discovered his body wasn’t where they left it, and he didn’t want to be a sitting target when he was found. There were too many pack members who thought he was a good contender for the alpha title or that his existence was a danger to the current alpha, his half-brother Jameson. A danger some of the more rabid pack members were more than happy to eradicate. Caden didn’t need or want the headache of being the pack alpha. All he wanted was to live in peace and find a nice man to settle down with. He gave a long doggy sigh. Jameson’s mother, Eliza, must be loving this. Eliza had never forgiven Caden’s father for dumping her when he found his true mate in Caden’s mother. She’d made Caden’s life difficult in a
million little ways and it had only gotten worse with his parents’ death in a car accident two years ago. At least his night was looking better. The vampire, Valor, was the best smelling thing he’d sniffed in a long while. He had a surprisingly rich and lush scent not like the one named Stephan who smelled like fireplace soot. The scent of deception. “Soon little one, we will have you out of there.” Valor said. The undead man watched him with a searching expression like he was waiting for Caden to spill all of his secrets. Fat chance of that happening. As soon as he was free he was going to get the hell out of town. He hoped his backpack was still where he’d left it before the pack mauled him. Thanks to the excellent care of the animal hospital facility and his werekin healing abilities, he was completely healed and ready to travel. Caden’s attention snapped back to the vampire when the cage door opened. Instinctively, Caden leapt for freedom. Before he could get far, a powerful hand grabbed him by the scruff of the neck preventing his escape. “Not so fast my pretty animal.” Valor said snapping a leash on the collar provided by the shelter. Caden growled his displeasure. “I’ve never seen him do that before even when we putting salve on his open wounds.” The keeper said in a worried tone. Caden turned and gave the keeper’s hand a friendly lick. He didn’t want the kind man distressed. The human had been nothing but good to Caden and the other animals. He’d hate for the man to get killed for offending the vampire. Caden always liked it when the keeper was around because he always smelled of a nice combination of the animals he cared for and happiness. Caden moved between the keeper and the vampire baring his fangs protectively. “Don’t get riled pup, I’m not going to harm him.” Valor said flashing a fanged smile of his own. Unexpectedly, the keeper knelt and wrapped his arms around Caden ignoring the scary vampire holding Caden’s leash. “You be a good boy Prince and Mr. Valor will take good care of you.” The keeper placed a sloppy kiss on Caden’s head that he could’ve done without. He resisted the instinct to growl at the kind man. Instead he gave the keeper his best doggy smile and licked the man’s face tasting the salty bitterness of tears. “Don’t worry about Prince he’ll have a happy life at my side.” Valor said. Caden gave a low disgruntled bark only to have his leash jerked. “Behave boy.” Don’t make me bite you. He whispered into the vamp’s head. “Don’t think that can’t work both ways.” Valor chuckled. Caden bowed his head submissively. If Valor thought he was thwarted the vamp was more likely to be off guard. He’d let the other man think he was alpha, but he was one pup who was just biding his time.
*** Valor watched the werehound lower his head not the least bit fooled. The young shapeshifter had more tricks than a circus pony. It didn’t escape Valor’s notice that the isolation cage Prince slept in was three times larger than the other animals or that he had a padded bed and prime dog food not seen in the other cages. This was one puppy who liked his luxuries. Valor stroked a hand across the werehound’s back and felt a strange soothing sensation go through him from the contact. Part of the problem of being as old as Valor was that blood rage festered and the urge to kill everything built over time. Most of the vamps his age went mad from pure fury and eventually were put down by their brethren to preserve the vampire society’s secrets. There were only a few other vamps he knew around his age that had yet to succumb. He scratched the animal’s ears and felt a ripple of pleasure. Not desire, but pure unadulterated joy. It buried his eternal fury with a blanket of simple contentment that had him gasping for air he no longer needed. What in the hell was that? The pup tilted his head at him, a universal doggy look of inquiry. Did you feel that? Valor mentally sent the question to Prince. What? For the first time Valor realized the werehound sounded young. Although he was a full-grown dog he might still be a child in human years. “Come, let’s get you home.” He said, pulling gently on the leash. “And the others sir?” Stephan asked deferentially. Valor stroked the golden head beneath his hand. “Hmmm. Yes, of course the others too.” With a gentle tug he led Prince through the corridor of cages. He could feel the creature’s desire for escape and he was oddly reluctant to let him go. There was generally bad blood between the two species but when he heard the shifter’s voice in his head, instead of feeling smug at the young creature’s predicament, Valor had felt sympathy. However, he didn’t feel so empathic that he was going to let the kid go before he saw him in his human form. They walked to the limo in silence. “Put the dogs in the truck.” He ordered pointing at the oversized four-wheel drive truck parked behind the limo. Stephan held out his hand for Prince’s leash. “Not this one.” Valor said yanking the dog out of reach. Possessiveness filled him as he triple wrapped the leash around his hand. “I’ll take him with me.” “Into the limousine?” Stephan said, his voice betraying his horror. “What if he pees in there or worse gets dog hair on everything?” Valor smirked. Stephan was a good backup man but he had an overwhelming concern for his clothing. “Trust me, my dog is not going to pee in the limo.” You better not. He sent silently to Prince. “And the dog hair?”
“You can change when we get home.” Valor said not really caring what happened to his clothing. Someone would clean it. Stephan stared at him in disbelief but Valor didn’t dare break his gaze. He was in charge and he’d be damned if he let the other vamp make him back down. Stephan looked away first. “I don’t know why we have to take the damned dog with us.” Stephan muttered opening the limousine door for Valor. “Get in boy.” The werehound balked at the order, giving Valor an insolent glare before putting just his head inside the vehicle. After a careful sniff at the limo’s interior, the golden animal jumped in and settled on the seat. Valor scooted in beside him leaving Stephan the opposite bench. “Can’t he sit on the floor?” Prince growled. Can we put a muzzle on him? The words whispered through Valor’s mind making him choke on his suppressed laughter. “No he can’t sit on the floor.” He said ignoring Stephan’s startled look. Idly he stroked the soft fur. The same feeling of calm filled him, wiping away the constant worries that weighed on him as the leader of his people. “I thought you only liked dogs as guards?” Stephan asked his wide eyes taking in Valor’s obvious enjoyment of the animal. “I quote. ‘animals are only good if they are useful.’” “This one is useful.” Valor said stroking the animal. “He calms me.” A strange expression crossed Stephan’s face. “Then by all means let’s get a dozen.” Valor smiled, tension pouring off him like water. He couldn’t remember feeling this good…ever. The miles flew by but it remained quiet in the limo. Finally Stephan broke the silence. “What are you going to name him?” Valor looked at the werehound. Caden. The soft voice whispered in his head. “Caden.” He repeated. “I’m going to name him Caden.” “Any particular reason? That’s kind of a strange name for a dog.” Valor smiled as he stroked the animal’s head. “It suits him.” Stephan sighed. “If you say so but the others are going to wonder about your new pet.” “Let them.” Valor wasn’t giving up his werehound. His fingers sank possessively into the fur as he scratched the pup behind his ears. Caden’s gold eyes crossed and his long pink tongue stuck out from the pleasure. “Silly pup.” As they approached the gates to his estate, the iron barrier swung open in response to the sensor mounted in the car. With his mind on the werehound, Valor looked over the grounds with new eyes. There was plenty of room for a pack of dogs but he wondered if werekin had different needs.
“Do you think you’ll have enough room to run?” He asked the animal. Caden lifted his head and surveyed the view outside. Yes. He gave a soft bark. “Excellent.” Stephan shook his head in amusement but Valor pretended to ignore him. His people would have to get used to him talking to his dog. Valor had a feeling it would be a constant event for as long as he could convince Caden to stay with him. They exited the limo with Valor keeping a tight grip on the leash. He could feel Caden bunching his thick muscles to make a run for it. “No you don’t.” He said pulling the animal in tight. “You belong to me now.” Eager to see what his pup looked like in human form, Valor all but ran up the steps to his mansion keeping his grip on the leash as he brushed past his people and continued straight towards the upper floor that contained his rooms. “Master.” Cella called out in her bell-like voice. “Aren’t you going to introduce us to your werekin pet?” Fuck. Valor stopped in his tracks and turned around. The look of shock on Stephan’s face was almost worth the irritation of not going straight to his rooms. “This is Caden. I am going to take him to my chambers and get to know him.” There were a few chuckles in the crowd. “Can I have him when you’re done?” He recognized Donaldo’s voice. Before his mind processed his movement, he was holding Donaldo in the air by his throat with his free hand. Squeezing hard he watched with satisfaction as Donaldo’s eyes bulged with the pressure. Anger roared through him energizing his body and enhancing his power. “If you even think of touching, tasting or looking at my werehound, I will tear you apart and feast on your entrails. Is that clear enough for you?” “Y-y-e-e-s-s.” Donaldo squeezed out through his constricted throat. Fierce anger gripped Valor as he threw Donaldo across the heads of the crowd and slammed him into the far wall. Throwing back his head Valor screamed a raw primal sound. They would recognize him as master or he would kill them all. A dark haze covered his vision as rage carried him off towards madness. Slim calloused fingers slipped between his, instantly draining his anger like a whirlpool sucking away the excessive emotions gripping his soul. Valor let out a slow breath. As his vision cleared, he saw his entire household kneeling before him. “It’s all right.” A soft, sultry voice said beside him. “I’m pretty sure they know who’s in charge.” Turning Valor looked down at the young man who barely reached the top of his shoulder. Shaggy caramel-colored hair framed a flawless face and a pair of stunning gold eyes that sparkled with bits of emerald and ruby. High cheekbones, a pointed chin and lush, kissable lips shifted
Valor’s rush of fury into a tsunami of desire. The only thing that stopped the man beside him from appearing feminine was the aura of masculine power oozing from him like the finest aphrodisiac. Valor’s canines elongated and moisture pooled in his mouth. Unable to stop himself, he lifted the young werehound and plunged his teeth into the tender jugular of Caden’s neck. “Oh fuck.” He heard the werehound curse. He would have to tell the young man that swearing wasn’t allowed, but later. Later when he wasn’t overwhelmed by Caden’s amazing flavor. Never had anyone’s blood tasted so powerful and vibrant, like he was sipping from the pool of life. Enthralled, it wasn’t until he heard the slowing of the younger man’s heart that he lifted his mouth and lapped at the wound to close it, only to find it had already healed. “Wow.” The soft exclamation sent shivers of need up and down Valor’s spine. “Are you all right?” Valor asked even though he could hear Caden’s heart pick back up to a normal beating pattern. The werehound had remarkable recovery time. A human would’ve been out for days with that kind of blood loss. “I’m fine.” Was Caden’s soft reply. Valor felt incredible. Power filled his veins with the strength of Caden’s blood and his head felt clear and calm. It wasn’t until that moment that he realized how foggy his thinking had become. Licking his lips he regarded the gorgeous creature beside him. Something about this small, sexy shapeshifter spun his senses. “Come let’s go to my suite.” *** Caden looked up at the predator staring back at him. He was so hard he could barely stand it. He wanted to wrap his legs around the handsome vamp and hump against him like a dog in heat. A quick glance around showed vampires were still kneeling all around them. “You might want to tell them they can get up.” Caden removed his collar and unwrapped the leash from Valor’s hand before setting them on a side table. Self-preservation told him not to give the sexy vamp anything to hold him with. Piercing black eyes didn’t look away from him as Valor spoke to his people. “You can rise. We’ll be in my suite. Stay away from my werehound.” With a possessive hand wrapped around his waist, Valor led Caden back to the stairway and up the stairs. Thoughts of what the vampire would do to him once they were alone filled Caden’s mind with both excitement and apprehension. “You taste better than anything I’ve ever tasted before.” Valor said in a deep, sexy voice. Caden was torn as to whether or not that was a good thing. He didn’t relish being a vampire chew toy. However, the pack running grounds were only five miles from the vampire’s mansion and he couldn’t risk capture by Jamie’s men. The last time he almost didn’t survive.
Valor’s suite turned out to be the entire top floor of the mansion. Caden was whisked through room after room, barely glimpsing inside before Valor dragged him forward. When he hesitated too long at a pretty painting, Valor lifted him off his feet and carried him through the next two doorways before tossing him through the air. Giving an undignified squeak, Caden landed with a bounce in the middle of a large firm mattress. He watched with wide eyes as the vampire stripped off his shirt and pants and was standing before him within minutes, bare of any clothing. Apparently really alpha vamps didn’t wear underwear. “You look good in my bed.” Valor growled. Caden couldn’t respond as lust surged through his body, scrambling his brain. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to stay a few days before deciding what to do next. He moaned as strong hands ripped off his clothing. Valor’s strength was such a turn on Caden had to hold himself back from spurting right there. He was more than a little surprised that Valor hadn’t said anything about his outfit. It was a rare talent to keep clothing while shifting but then maybe the vamp knew as much about werekin as Caden did about vampires. Caden’s mind shut down when a hot mouth wrapped around his right nipple and fangs scraped his skin. Valor lapped at the bead of blood his teeth left behind. “I could drink from you forever.” Valor said in a heated voice. The vampire started heading south and Caden tensed up. “What?” Lust faded from the vampire’s face, as he smelled Caden’s fear. “I’m not certain I want your fangs that close to my man bits.” Valor burst out laughing. “Man bits.” The vampire’s body convulsed as he eased up beside Caden resting his darker head beside Caden’s on the pillow. “I would never do anything to endanger your man bits.” Valor laughed. The warm expression in the vampire’s eyes did strange things to Caden’s stomach but he brushed it off as residual lust. Valor reached into the drawer beside the bed and pulled out a bottle of lube. As they were both paranormals they couldn’t pass disease from one another. The inquiring look in the vampire’s eyes settled Caden’s nerves. He nodded. “Do you want me on my back or hands and knees.” Valor smiled. “I want to see your face.” *** Valor looked down at Caden lying on his bed and almost spilled his seed. Over his long life he had many lovers, all appealing in their own way, but none of them had ever ensnared all of his senses like the stunning man beneath him. He licked his lips as Caden’s flavor lingered along his tongue, imprinting on his soul. He didn’t know what his tribe would think about his new lover but he was keeping him and anyone who tried to stop him would be eliminated. Admiring Caden’s flawless golden skin and rippling muscles made Valor’s cock even harder as he covered two fingers with lube. The
werehound wasn’t bodybuilder buff but he had good muscle definition that probably came from running in his animal form. With other lovers a few whips and chains were occasionally used but he’d never felt the need to put a permanent collar of ownership on a man before. Maybe it was because his lover was part animal but Valor felt the need to mark the man so others would know he belonged to someone no matter what his form. A memory teased him as he recalled a gift he had stashed in a drawer. He’d give it to his lover tomorrow. Caden might be smaller but there was a definite feel of power and defiance radiating off the werehound. This wasn’t a submissive lover. He would have to fight for the upper hand. Luckily Valor had never walked away from a challenge and if there was anything he knew about in life it was anything worth having was worth the effort. Caden’s cock stood up tall as his amazing golden eyes watched Valor’s every movement. “Don’t worry my beauty I’ll take excellent care of you.” He crooned. Caden snorted. “Guys aren’t beautiful.” “You are to me.” Valor said with perfect honesty. He carefully slid in one finger, then another. The man below him was hotter than any lover he’d had before. Vampires tended to have cooler body temperatures but even the hottest human had nothing on his golden werehound. Shit he should’ve tried a shapeshifter before. Almost beyond excited, Valor concentrated on what he was doing and tried to think unsexy thoughts so he didn’t give up his seed before he even breached his lover. Caden did all the things that pushed Valor’s buttons. The sexy werehound moaned, wiggled and pleaded with Valor as he moved his body on the vampire’s fingers. “Come on, enough preparation, fuck me.” The sexy shapeshifter begged. “Please…you...now.” he panted. Valor smiled wondering if Caden knew he was never letting him go. There was something about this slim werehound that Valor needed desperately and would do anything to keep forever. During the next hour Valor discovered that Caden’s nipples were sensitive but his ribs weren’t ticklish. That the werehound moaned loudest when Valor’s hands were a little rougher and that plunging into Caden’s silky, hot body was the most amazing experience in over two thousand years. Caden surrounded him like a volcanic bath ratcheting up his desire a thousand degrees. Plunging in and out of Caden’s tight hole became Valor’s focus. The room, the tribe, everything faded from consciousness until there was nothing but him and Caden. Caden was his world. The werehound’s gold eyes locked with Valor’s. Heavy with passion, the red and green flecks glowed with life and bored into Valor as if they were making an otherworldly connection. He could almost see the animal looking out.
“Fuck you’re tight.” Valor grunted pulling slightly out of the hot vise that gripped his cock before plunging back in. “No, you’re just huge.” Caden said lifting his ass to meet the vampire’s motions. Valor felt a laugh burst out. He couldn’t remember the last time he had fun with a lover. Maybe never. Eventually, as all things do, Valor’s passion ended. He pumped Caden full before pulling out and spewing additional cum onto the werehound’s golden skin. Entranced with the sight Valor spread his fingers through the sticky moisture and massaged it into Caden’s skin. He knew the other man would smell Valor on him all day. Pleased with himself, Valor gripped Caden’s long, thick gorgeous cock and pumped him until Caden spilled his seed. Valor licked up the fluid that spilled onto his hand and spread the rest across his own chest feeling the need to be marked by Caden. To be claimed by the other man. A sleepy pleased smile crossed Caden’s face. “You marked yourself.” He said with wonder. “I wanted you to know that for now I am yours as you are mine.” In a surprisingly swift motion, Caden pulled Valor down on top of him and wrapped the vampire in his arms. “Rest. We’ll worry about everything else in the morning.” Valor smiled. “Don’t you mean tomorrow evening?” “Whatever.” Still smiling, the master vampire surrendered to his lover’s embrace.
Chapter Two Caden woke up in a dark room. Blinking he tried to focus on his surroundings. It took him a moment for memories of last night to filter into his mind. The still body of his lover held him close as if the other man was afraid of losing him while he slept. He had to get out of here. It was almost better to be captured by his brother’s men than to become enthralled by a vampire. His mother’s warnings belatedly rang in his head. Avoid vampires at all costs. That had been her motto and she had enough evidence to back it up. Her cousin’s family had been all but eradicated by a bloodthirsty vampire tribe. And what did he do? First sign of trouble he used a vampire to get him out. He should’ve stayed a pound puppy. Those humans were more than happy to take care of him. “Fuck.” “You need to give up cursing my sweet pup.” Valor’s voice slid across Caden like silk across his bare skin, setting his hormones aflame. Sex was never as good as it was in Valor’s arms last night. He rubbed against the other man feeling more cat than canine. “Easy pet.” Valor’s big hands cradled Caden’s head tilting him to receive a blistering kiss. Caden knew he should be making his escape but with the vampire’s hands on him he could barely form a thought much less a strategic plan. Their lovemaking was fast and furious as if Valor was trying to imprint his essence on Caden. Afterwards, Caden lay there panting in a satisfied heap while Valor rubbed cum from both of their bodies into his skin. “It itches. I’m going to take a shower.” Valor’s dark eyes examined him carefully as if measuring his every word. “Very well. I’ll come with you and scrub your back.” “Sounds good.” Caden said. After all it wasn’t like the vamp could watch him every minute. Eventually he’d get his chance to escape and if it took a few days of hot sex before he could get away, then so be it. After a steamy shower that involved even steamier touching and a quickie against the shower wall, the pair exited the bathroom. A human servant was waiting for them in Valor’s bedroom. Valor stepped in front of Caden. “No one is to see him naked.” He snapped. The servant turned his head aside, eyes averted. “Sorry sire. I came to see if you or your new pet needed anything.” The man couldn’t quite hide his sneer at the word pet. “Careful Bryant. There was a time when to be a leader’s pet was a position of honor. Remember that when you speak to my werehound, you speak to me. I’ll not have him disrespected.” “Are you hungry, my pet?” Valor asked still blocking the human’s view.
“Yes, Valor.” Caden said. He wasn’t quite sure how to address the vamp but he didn’t want to be disrespectful as that appeared to be the vampire’s hot button. “Bring us a plate of steak, lots of vegetables and a glass of milk.” Caden snorted. Vegetables, yuck. “You need to feed your human half also. I’ll not have you become malnourished on my watch.” Caden hoped Valor’s watch wasn’t very long. He definitely needed to move on before he got used to this kind of treatment. The werekin world was a rough place where claws and fangs established the ladders of dominance. Caden would become soft if he stayed here too long. His life depended on him staying on his toes. “Now go.” Valor said to his servant. “Do you need a donor?” The servant asked keeping his eyes obediently averted. Valor was shocked to realize his body still pulsed with power from his werehound snack the night before. For the first time he wondered if the stories of ancient vampire kings keeping werekin as pets were rumors after all. He would give much to feel this kind of power on a regular basis. How often he could drink from Caden without harming him? “I’m fine. Just bring my pet a well-balanced meal heavy on the protein.” As soon as the servant was gone he pulled Caden towards him sighing as they made full skin-toskin contact. Immediately the irritation he’d felt towards the servant faded and he forgot all his annoyance beneath the wave of soothing pouring from the werehound. He nuzzled Caden’s neck smiling against the warm skin as his lover tensed. “I’m not going to bite. I’m just savoring.” Inhaling Caden’s rich scent of leaves and warm soil, Valor licked at the skin and pulled his lover closer. “You feel so good to me.” He whispered pressing his cheek against Caden’s silky head. He felt Caden smile against his chest. “You don’t feel so bad either.” Caden replied getting in a nip of his own. “Hey, I ordered you food. No need to bite.” Valor reluctantly stepped back. Forcing his hands to release Caden was more effort than it should’ve been. “I need to order you some clothes.” Valor mused. He walked to his closet and pulled out a black silk shirt and held it up to his lover. It looked wrong. “No black for you. It is the color of the undead and you are so full of life.” Valor didn’t expect a response from his lover, the young werekin wasn’t the chatty type, a fact he greatly appreciated. The quiet stillness that Caden exuded was part of the reason he was so soothing. Valor wouldn’t find a chatterbox half as appealing. Next Valor pulled out a deep green shirt. It had his crest of a raven in flight embroidered along the collar and sleeves. It was soft and silky and would look amazing on his bright-haired lover. “Wear your jeans with this and I’ll have some new ones ordered for tomorrow.”
He wouldn’t be able to stand Caden wearing the clothes of someone else, their scent might rub off on him and then Valor would have to kill one of his people for little more than loaning out a piece of clothing. Caden didn’t say much. He simply pulled on his pants and accepted the shirt with a quiet thanks. It was difficult for Valor to figure out what his lover was thinking. Unlike a vamp or human, werekin couldn’t be easily read. He’d have to delve deeply into Caden’s mind to figure out his thoughts and he was certain his lover would know and be offended by the intrusion. Before he could ask what was going on in Caden’s head there was a knock at the door. “Enter.” Two servants walked in laden with food. Valor could smell beer, chicken and various fruits and vegetables. There was also a gallon of milk and the scent of something chocolate. Chocolate? Only the thought of poisoning his lover made him ask. “Can you eat chocolate?” Caden’s eyes flashed with ire. “Why because I can change into a dog? You think somehow I am one!” He sneered. The servants froze at the low growl underlying the werehound’s voice. “I’m sorry love but I don’t personally know any werekin and I don’t want to make you sick.” He could tell by his lover’s posture that he wasn’t forgiven. The stiff body and clenched jaw radiated anger. A quick glance proved the sparkles in Caden’s eyes were at a low glow. A sign Valor was learning meant his lover was experiencing turbulent emotions. Shit. They were having such a nice morning too. He waved the servants away. They quickly put down the trays and fled the room. Once they were clear he walked over to Caden and gently put his arms around the smaller man. “I didn’t mean to upset you.” He brushed his cheek over the soft tawny head. “I don’t know the rules of the werekin. You’ll have to teach me as we go. We still have a lot to learn about each other.” He kept his voice low and coaxing as he pulled Caden tighter into his embrace. Caden let out a sigh. “I suppose we do. And just for the record, chocolate does make me a little queasy.” Valor could hear the annoyance in Caden’s voice as he grudgingly admitted his allergy. Valor laughed. “Then it will be stricken from the menu.” Caden’s stomach took that moment to growl. “Let’s get you fed, then we’ll see what my bloodmates are up to.” Without thinking he pulled out a chair for Caden. The werehound gave him an odd look but didn’t say anything as he sat. Valor lifted the tray covers and was pleased with the quantity and variety his people prepared on such short notice. Although they did have human donors in residence the chef rarely went to culinary lengths for them. From the smell of everything on the trays, Chef Jenkins had pulled out all the stops.
“Smells wonderful.” Caden said flashing him a smile that did strange things to Valor’s stomach. People didn’t smile at him. Vampires cowered in his presence and humans hid for fear of his wrath. It was inconceivable that a pretty werehound couldn’t understand his danger. Caden looked at him like, well a lover, and wasn’t the least concerned that Valor bit him and took his blood. Stunned, Valor sat down at the other side of the table and proceeded to watch the slim, gorgeous man polish of two entire trays of food. He made a mental note to tell the chef to double the quantity when Caden started gnawing on the bones. “Did you need more?” A blush stained the young man’s cheeks. “No. I just like the marrow.” He admitted with a shy smile. “I’ll get you an entire bowl of bones if you’d like but now is the time to see if my people need anything. I put aside time each night to deal with any issues that might come up.” Valor walked over to his dresser and retrieved a diamond and ruby collar presented to him by a sorceress over a hundred years ago. The woman had told him that there would come a day when he would want to claim a lover and he would need a collar to do it properly. At the time he’d laughed. He wasn’t into collaring his lover or that kind of shit, but a collar was perfect for someone who changed into a dog. That way people would know he belonged to Valor not matter what shape he took. Turning back he walked to where Caden was still sucking on a bone. “I have something for you.” Valor held up the collar unprepared for the glare and the low growl coming from his lover. “I’m not your new puppy.” Hurt, Valor funneled his pain to anger. Grabbing Caden by his shirt he lifted him out of his chair. “That is exactly what you are.” His sudden spurt of rage faded as quickly as it had come. With a sigh he set Caden back on his feet. Those stunning gold eyes watched him cautiously sending a rare twinge of guilt through Valor. “I thought you’d like it. To be claimed as mine is a rare privilege.” Caden looked into the vampire’s eyes and felt a surge of remorse. Valor really thought he was offering him a high honor. Standing on his tiptoes he placed a soft kiss on the vampire’s cheek. “In your culture it’s an honor. In my culture it means that I’m giving up status to be lower in the pack than you. You will be my alpha. It means that I will belong to you and am putting myself in your hands trusting that you will take care of me. It’s almost like a marriage. Are you ready for that kind of commitment?” Valor stroked a hand across Caden’s head in what was becoming a familiar gesture. “Wearing this collar will tell others that they must not touch you. I didn’t mean to take away your status. It’s important you wear the collar so you’ll be under my protection while you’re here.” That was the catch. How much longer was he going to be there?
Looking at Valor’s earnest expression, Caden knew he would give in. After all he was living with another culture, at least temporarily, so he needed to adapt to their ways. He felt a momentary pang over the way his life was turning out. At this point in his life he’d hoped to have finished his degree in structural engineering and settled down with someone he loved. Not only did he have to flee before finishing his last two classes, but while he was on the run he couldn’t dare risk another person’s life. Someone who was mated to him would be in danger from Jameson’s pack. Blinking back tears, Caden gave in. “Fine. I’ll wear it.” He felt the chill of metal against his neck before it quickly warmed against his skin. The collar fit perfectly and Caden couldn’t help checking the mirror to see how it looked. Gems winked at him from his reflection. It really was beautiful and probably worth more than his car. “It’s pretty.” He said admiring the sparkle. “I’ll return it when it’s time for me to go.” For a brief moment Valor’s hands tightened on Caden’s shoulders making him wonder if the other man was going to leave bruises. “Let’s hope you don’t want to go anytime soon.” Valor said in a voice rich with darker passions. He turned to see the vampire looking at him with a familiar flare of desire in his eyes. Caden’s body immediately responded to the look like he was trained to become hard at the first sign of the Valor’s desire. “I thought you had a meeting.” Valor sighed. Caden bit back a smile at the action. He was pretty sure the man didn’t need to breathe. It was an amusing hold over from when the vampire was human. He wisely didn’t say anything. “Care to share your amusement?” Valor asked arching one brow. “Nope.” Caden said. He walked over and hooked an arm through his lover who had dressed completely in black while Caden was admiring his collar. The silk shirt felt slick beneath his fingertips. He stroked it for a moment before a low noise had him looking up. “If you insist of petting me like that we are going to be incredibly late.” Valor said, flashing a smile exposing full fangs. Oops. Caden started to remove his hand only to have Valor clamp it back. “I like the contact just try not to stroke me too much unless we are alone in my rooms. Otherwise I won’t be able to concentrate. In fact why don’t you change into a hound? People will stare at you less in your animal form.” Caden didn’t bother to ask why the vampire wanted people staring less, especially when he went to the trouble of picking out clothes. He just shrugged and focused inside. The slide from human to hound was smooth and other than the tickling tingle of magic caused no discomfort to Caden. There were those of the pack who went through horribly painful changes but he never had a problem. It came from being descended from royalty on two sides. The werekin blood was strong inside him.
“You do that so easily.” Valor said. His eyes ran appreciatively over the animal before him. Caden barked at him and allowed the vampire to stroke his coat. “If you want to talk to me use your mind. You have excellent telepathic communication and it should be even easier with your blood within me.” The pair left Valor’s bedroom. Caden followed the vampire’s lead, which took them to the room they were in the night before. A huge throne dominated one side. How had he missed that before? The giant chair was a creation of leather and wood and all but screamed absolute ruler. He wasn’t the least bit surprised when Valor sat down and looked right at home. Caden settled down on the tile beside the throne and rested his head on his paws trying to look like an innocent puppy. He heard Valor chuckle beside him. The vampire’s fingers could barely brush Caden’s head. Sit up. Valor gave a snuffling sound before replying in Valor’s head. No. I’m comfy. After his big breakfast and sex with Valor he was ready for a doggy nap. He gave a long yawn letting it spread his jaws in a delicious stretch. “Someone bring my lazy dog a chair. He’s positioned too low.” One point for the puppy. Valor should be annoyed, he knew he should but Caden was just too damn funny. He could feel the pup’s amusement through their link. His pet was quite pleased with himself and a little sleepy. One of the human servants brought a wooden chair. Valor frowned. “Does that look comfortable to you?” He kicked the chair to the ground in a display of temper narrowly missing the servant. Behave “I won’t behave until they bring you something appropriate.” Rage poured through him. Someone needed to die. Soft fur slid across his hand and the wave of fury receded as if it had never been. Before he could comment a heavy weight splayed across his lap. Valor laughed. Amusement bubbling up so quickly he couldn’t stop it from spilling out. “You win. But you’d best shift. I don’t want to be clawed in inappropriate places.” The statement was barely out of his mouth before his lap was filled with a gorgeous man. “I’ve never seen anyone shift before.” Cella said in a hushed tone. “It’s so smooth. I always thought it would hurt.” There was a murmur of agreement around the room. Valor felt Caden stiffen. He soothed him with soft circles of his hand on the werehound’s back. “Let’s not fixate on my pet, he’s shy.” Caden leaned against Valor settling his head on the vampire’s shoulder. Tenderness filled Valor as he cradled his delicate looking lover.
“Are you ready for business? Or are you going to snuggle your pet all night?” Donaldo sneered. Valor rubbed his cheek across Caden’s head. “Because I’m snuggling my pet I don’t feel the overwhelming urge to rip off your head and beat you with it so be happy that he calms me.” Donaldo looked at Caden thoughtfully. “In that case I withhold my comments about your pet. Could we deal with real issues now?” Valor waved a hand indicating for the other man to continue. He quickly returned to stroking his pet’s hair. “I don’t think you should ever cut this.” The hair was long and silky and felt exactly like Caden’s hair in dog form. “Focus, Valor.” Caden said. “The man wants to talk to you.” Rolling his eyes, Valor returned his attention to Donoldo. “What?” “Hunters are testing the borders. The new security dogs scared off a group last night.” “Do we have enough coverage?” “For now. We might want to look into recruiting day Guardia.” Valor thought over Donoldo’s recommendation. Donoldo was a pain in the ass but he knew his stuff. If he thought they needed new staff he was probably right. “What are day Guardia?” Caden asked. “Humans that we give some of our blood to so they have enhanced abilities but aren’t yet vampires. They can still protect us while we rest.” “Hmmm.” Caden said. “Why aren’t the dogs enough?” “Because we can’t talk to them and find out what they know.” Caden tilted his head and looked amused. “But you can, can’t you?” Valor said entranced by the sparkles in his lover’s eyes. Not looking away he ordered Donaldo, “Bring in one of the guard dogs from last night.” It looked like there was no end to his lover’s talents. He hoped Caden didn’t plan on leaving soon, because as far as he was concerned they were going to be together for the rest of their days on earth. He would have to see what kind of deal he could make regarding the afterlife. One of the vampire guards brought in a large Doberman. Since the dogs could be mind controlled the vampire didn’t bother with a leash. Caden slid off of Valor’s lap. The vampire had to hold back the urge to grab him and return him to Valor’s arms where he belonged. Caden kneeled before the large dog who took one look at Caden and rolled over on his back showing his belly in an impressive show of submission. Valor didn’t think he’d ever seen the dog named Killer lower his eyes much less show his belly to another. “Who’s a good boy, hmmm.” Caden said in a sing-song tone. The dog barked his agreement. Valor watched in amazement as Caden gripped the dog’s head and stared into the animal’s eyes. He didn’t know what kind of power his lover had but the dog stayed perfectly still as Caden probed his mind. The silence went on for so long he was about to ask if there was a problem, when Caden released the animal. Caden turned away and slid back onto Valor’s lap. “You’ve had intruders. At least four people at the south corner.”
Caden’s tone held the power of command and Valor could feel waves of energy pouring off of his werehound. Damn he was hard. Once Caden was settled back on his lap, Valor gripped a handful of his lover’s thick locks, yanked Caden’s head back and plunged his fangs into his powerful pet. Energy surged into the vampire as Caden’s flavorful blood seeped into his system. After a few sucks Valor lifted his head and licked the few drops of blood that had escaped his attention. Valor’s skin tingled with energy until he felt almost too powerful for his skin. He glanced down at his pet. Caden’s eyes were at half-mast as he gave Valor a wicked smile. “How do I taste?” He asked, his voice a low hum. “Better than anything on this earth.” Valor said. Standing, he lifted Caden as he went. “Master, we have more things to discuss.” Donaldo protested. “We’ll discuss them later. Investigate the gate and let me know what you find. They might be creating weaknesses in our defenses. We’ll be in my room.” Valor smiled when Caden hid his face in the vampire’s neck. His little werehound was shy. He’d get over that soon enough, at least with Valor. The vampire master didn’t want his pup to lose his modesty about being naked with anyone else. A low growl built in his throat at the thought of anyone else seeing his lover naked. Using his abilities, Valor sped through the hall and up the stairs with supernatural speed. The need to bury himself balls deep in his lover overpowered everything else. “Strip.” Valor demanded setting Caden on the floor and removing his own clothes with blinding speed. Caden stared at him with wide-eyed fascination. “Perhaps you didn’t hear me, my sweet.” The vampire master said stalking his prey. “I told you to strip.” Seconds later the sound of tearing filled the room and Caden was stark naked, wide-eyed and panting with excitement. *** Caden couldn’t do anything but stare at his lover. Valor was magnificent. Sex among the werekin was different. If the person wasn’t your mate the sex was all about heat and need and the coupling was fast and frenzied. Valor didn’t rush. Despite stripping Caden out of his clothing, the vampire took his time approaching him. Caden peeked at him through his lashes hoping Valor liked what he saw. “You never have to worry about what I think, my pet.” Valor said in his silky, seductive tones. “You are magnificent.” Caden felt his cheeks flush red. It was difficult to embarrass a werekin, as a species they were an earthy lot. But somehow this vampire got to him. Made him insane with need. Watching the vampire’s body language, Caden waited for the perfect positioning. If he had his tail it would’ve been wagging. Valor made the mistake of walking between Caden and the bed.
With a happy yip of glee Caden took the big vamp down. They landed with a soft thump on the firm mattress with Valor beneath him. He looked down at his lover and couldn’t resist licking the man’s cheek. “Stop that.” Valor said, laughing. “You’re proud of yourself aren’t you?” Caden nodded. He was pleased to see the vampire was smiling. The man took life too seriously. It wasn’t the werekin way to think much past the moment. At least it wasn’t Caden’s way, which was probably why he was running for his life. Looking down at the handsome man beneath him Caden couldn’t stop the smile that spread across his lips. “Now that I have you whatever shall I do with you?” “As my pet you should see to my needs.” Valor purred. Caden could feel Valor’s hard length pressed against his stomach. “You’re right I should be a good pet.” Caden’s mouth watered at the thought of tasting his mate. Mate!!! No. No. No. Fear drained all desire from his body. Caden jumped off of Valor and shifted. He didn’t want a mate. No mate. No mate. His thoughts bounced back and forth as he went into canine mode. The first trek around the room proved the door was closed. A frenzied glance around found an open window. “No.” Valor yelled behind him but Caden ignored the man’s frantic shout. He needed out. Now! Now! Now!! With a giant bound he leapt through the opening, landed on the roof and jumped to the ground unharmed. His werekin reflexes prevented him from damaging himself and he barely stumbled as he shot across the mansion’s grounds. He couldn’t have a mate. His enemies would hunt down and kill anyone he loved. He couldn’t let that happen to Valor. He must protect Valor from harm. The sound of baying brought him up short. Dozens of dogs raced to join him in his run. As an alpha the others ran with him as if they were his pack. For a moment he let them follow. It felt good to belong even if it was to purebred animals with simple minds. He let his senses brush across them listening to their thoughts of smells and hunts and rich, red steaks. Simple creatures with simple needs. For a moment Caden felt the urge to be completely one with his animal self. If he were a dog no one would hunt him. His brother would leave him be and his mate would be safe. Unfortunately he was a selfish creature and he knew deep down that he longed for Valor too much. This far away he already could already feel the pain of separation from his mate. His temporary stay had turned into a gentle cage. Now he could never leave the vampire. Even though there was little hope that a member of the undead would fall for his food source, every werekin
knew that to leave your mate was to lose half your soul. Why the moon goddess chose a vampire as his other half he didn’t know but he would bow to her wisdom even if it broke his heart. As a gay male he never thought he’d have a mate, and now that he did he only hoped that he could keep his mate safe from everyone who was out to kill him. Caden was willing to risk his life but not his mate’s. Anyone who threatened Valor would find out what kind of alpha Caden could be. Satisfied with his decision, Caden started to enjoy his run. Running cleared out his mind and settled a wild need deep inside to be free. Strangers were here. Hunters. Werekin. Caden came out of his own thoughts to focus on the Doberman at his side. It was the same animal he’d read earlier. Although the Doberman was the natural alpha of the real dogs, the animal was more than willing to defer to Caden when it came to human matters. Show me. Caden sent back to the animal. He would investigate this problem himself before returning to his mate. Thoughts of Valor had him mentally reaching out to the vampire. A haze of rage and pain overcame him causing him to misstep. With natural athleticism Caden quickly regained his footing before blocking Valor out once again. He’d have to make it up to the vampire, but right now he was curious about what had upset the dogs. Keep away. He telepathed to the dogs. Caden wanted to check that no one planted anything here. Hunters were notorious for planting poisoned meat and traps to catch unwary werekin and he didn’t know what strange werekin would do against a vampire tribe. Needing fingers Caden focused on his human form. A tingling sensation ran through his body, a million pinpricks spiking through his system. Between one breath to the next, Caden transformed from hound to man. Unfortunately he was still naked. “Shit.” Caden said looking around. Luckily it looked like there was no one there but him and the dogs and they didn’t care about his nudity. “Good evening Galata.” Caden said bowing to the moon. A sudden breeze swirled around him lifting up his hair and dancing around his body. Calm infused Caden as he felt wrapped in his goddess’ embrace. He’d always had a special relationship with Galata, the moon goddess. Family history traced Caden’s Gaelic ancestors as the first descendents of the blessed moon people. A group of shapeshifters endowed with special abilities by the goddess. As far as he knew, Caden was the last pure descendant of the goddess’ people. The only werekin left who could still use magic. True it wasn’t a completely useful magic. It didn’t protect him from werekin pummeling him half to death. Caden’s magic was simpler, he could manipulate locks, change and keep his clothing, and blend with his environment; what his mother used to call small magics. A scream of rage brought him back to the present and away from wistful memories of his mother. Valor stormed up to him his eyes glowing red with fury. “You left me.” The earth shook beneath Caden’s feet as Valor’s anger sank into the earth.
“Calm, my mate.” Caden said. He ignored Valor’s fury and wrapped his arms around the vampire’s waist pressing his bare skin against the vampire. *** Valor lost his rage like a snuffed out candle. He was so relieved to find his pup unharmed that he pulled him close savoring the feel of the smaller body against his. Caden was safe. The fear and emptiness that rode him since Caden’s leap out the window evaporated. Now he was filled with the warmth and comfort that his lover always brought with him. He breathed deeply; inhaling oxygen he didn’t need in order to absorb the scent of his lover into his rarely used lungs. “Why did you leave me?” The words burst through Valor’s lips before he could call them back. “I was scared.” Caden’s whisper was so quiet Valor barely heard him even with his enhanced hearing. Valor tilted Caden’s head back. “Who scared you?” It was best to know who needed to die before the person frightened his werehound again. “You did.” “Me? How did I scare you?” Caden rested his head on Valor’s chest avoiding his eyes. Valor ran a soothing hand down his lover’s back as tension tightened the smaller man’s body. “You’re my mate.” Caden whispered the words so quietly that if Valor didn’t have supernatural hearing he might have missed them. Joy rushed through Valor. A werekin would never leave the one he thought was his mate. Valor didn’t understand all of the underlying rules of shapeshifter society but he knew that one. However, Caden was still not meeting his eyes and he had run away after deciding Valor was his mate. There was obviously something he was missing here. “Is there a problem with that?” He asked, placing a kiss on top of his lover’s silky head. Caden let out a sigh. “I don’t want a mate right now. There are too many things in my life that could harm you. I can’t take the chance that you might be killed.” Caden looked up, piercing Valor with his golden gaze. “It would destroy me if you died.” For the first time in his undead life Valor felt tears prickling his eyes. “I’ve survived many years before you my sweet pup. The greatest danger of a vampire my age is bloodlust madness. After so long insanity sets in and we are taken away by our own rage and bloodlust. For some reason you can calm me and keep me sane. Maybe it’s because I am your mate.” “Do vampires have mates?” Caden’s forehead wrinkled adorably and Valor took a moment to kiss it. He knew he would have to be careful how he answered the question. Caden’s heart was in his eyes as he looked up at him. Vampires didn’t fall in love but he couldn’t tell that to the sweet boy beside him. He might not be able to fall in love but he’d stake himself before he broke his werehound’s heart. “Vampires don’t mate like werekin but I think we can agree that we don’t have a normal relationship. Let’s not try to define what we are.”
Caden’s head snapped back and he stepped out of Valor’s arms. “I can’t just ignore the fact that you’re my mate. A mating is sacred.” Caden’s voice rose with anger. “If you’re my mate you have to be accepted by the moon goddess and go through the mating ceremony.” “Do all werekin do this?” Valor had never heard of a ceremony before. Not that he knew everything about the werekin but he thought he would’ve heard of a ceremony. “All the people in my family do.” Caden said. His voice had such solid conviction that Valor didn’t argue. “I’ll do whatever ceremony you want, my sweet.” Valor looked around at the circle of dogs sitting on their haunches watching them. “Is there a reason we are all standing around?” He asked desperate to change the subject. “We’re investigating.” Caden nodded towards the gates. “The dogs say two sets of people came here. A group of hunters and at least one werekin. I need to investigate to see if I recognize the markings.” Valor eyed Caden thoughtfully. “Is there any reason you think you might recognize it?” “My brother hunts me. His pack lives close and I can’t take the chance that he might find me living at your house.” “Why does your brother hunt you?” Caden saw the spike of rage in Valor’s eyes so he grabbed his hand and waited for him to calm before he answered. “He doesn’t want any competition for alpha. He sent some of his men to kill me a few weeks ago. I escaped from them but he can always send more. Give me a moment and I’ll let you know if it was him that came.” A rank smell filled his nostrils as he approached the location of interest. Padding over, Caden examined the area. The smell of gunpowder and hot metal filled the air, the smell of hunters. Beneath that layer of scent was another. Eliza. Her scent infused the area. The musky perfume she wore, an oddity among werekin, overpowered her natural scent. Caden always thought it was to mask the smell of wrongness he was certain oozed from her every pore. Yeah, he was bitter. She’d made his mother’s life a living hell and to this day he was certain his parents accident hadn’t been accidental. To smell her perfume here at his lover’s home sent ice through his veins. Fear rabbited through his system. If Eliza had been here did Jamie know where he was? Had he been spotted? Had they followed Caden’s scent to the vampire mansion? *** Valor watched warily as Caden prodded the earth with his fingers before bringing a pinch of it up to his nose. His worst fears were confirmed when Caden’s head jerked back and Valor saw his lover’s eyes widen. Caden’s face paled as he turned to face Valor. “I was hoping to have more time to spend with you but now that she knows I’m here. I’ve got to go.” The panicked tone in his lover’s voice snapped Valor out of his introspection.
“Where do you think you’re going? What happened to you’re my mate. We have to have a mating ceremony!” He demanded. “You are my mate.” Caden growled, “which is why I can’t endanger you. My brother’s mother has been here. I can’t endanger your life. I have to try and lead them away from here.” Caden leaned forward and gave Valor a hot kiss. “I will return to you.” Before Valor could say anything more, his werehound lover shifted and ran through the gates and out into the night. “Caden.” Valor shouted. He could feel the distance from his lover increasing, a pull at his soul piercing through him. The dogs howled in unison as if bidding their alpha goodbye. Cursing, Valor turned back towards the manor. He’d send someone later to chase after Caden. It wasn’t like the werehound was going to go far. If he understood werekin at all Caden would feel compelled to return to Valor and if his wild-hearted lover didn’t come back on his own he’d hunt the fucker down.
Chapter Three “My lord you have to get up.” Stephan’s irritating voice pierced Valor’s fogged mind. It had taken the entire household liquor cabinet to finally get him drunk and he still felt the absence of his lover like an open sore on his soul. Fucking werehound. Three weeks without his lover proved that even a two thousand year old vamp didn’t know everything. You can be undead and fall in love. Even in his sleep he longed for the taste, the smell and the feel of his lover beneath his body. He woke up every evening reaching for a man who wasn’t there even though he knew Caden was maddeningly close. He could feel his presence. “Go away.” He muttered to Stephan, hiding beneath the covers. “There’s a werewolf pack here wanting to discuss common problems.” “Werewolves.” Valor jumped out of bed, his mind clearing instantly. “They might know something about my Caden.” Did werehounds and werewolves intermingle? “You might want to bathe.” Stephan said dryly. “Good idea. Where did you put them?” “Drawing room. Only five of them came but apparently they have a large pack about five miles from here.” Caden’s pack. Valor remembered Caden telling him his pack lived nearby. It was too much of a coincidence for this not to be the same group. Valor had done research since his werehound left him and he’d learned that territorial instincts prevented werekin packs from being closer than twenty miles apart. He also learned a lot more about werekin mates and knew that Caden couldn’t survive more than a few miles away from him for an extended length of time. However, the scouting parties Valor sent out gained him nothing as Caden easily avoided his pursuers. Valor finally stopped sending them out when the vampires threatened to rebel after Caden led them into a marshy swamp. If his beautiful werehound didn’t return soon Valor was going to go out of his fucking mind. He turned his attention to Stephan. “Don’t tell them anything. This might be the pack that Caden was hiding from. I’ll feel them out. Have some food prepared. Steaks or something.” Stephan gave a bow. “I’ll stall them while you take your shower.” “Excellent.” Valor fled to the bathroom intent on becoming clean as fast as possible so he could learn more about the creatures who might be part of his lover’s pack. A pack he might have to destroy so he could get his lover back by his side where he belonged. No one man or beast was going to keep him from Caden, not even Caden himself.
After a lightening fast shower Valor entered the drawing room to the intermingled scents and sounds of werekin and vamps. He briefly wondered what Stephan had done with the human feeders. Must be hiding. Despite the smell of rich blood, Valor’s fangs didn’t drop and he felt no inclination to sample any of the strong bodies in the room. Caden was the only one he longed for and if his pup didn’t return soon there was a real danger that Valor was going to starve to death. Valor approached the werekin, five tall handsome strangers none of whom looked anything like his beloved werehound, until one of the five separated from the pack and gave him a wide familiar smile. “Greetings Master Valor. I’m Jameson Killens the leader of the Redwood Pack. This is my beta True and some of my enforcers Daniel, Rory and Paul. ” At least now he knew the names of the men he had to kill. Valor held back the urge to snap the alpha’s neck as he nodded his head politely in response to the greeting. If this were the person Caden was hiding from it would be a simple action to kill him and get Caden back. But first he had to be certain the alpha was hunting his man. A vampire-werewolf war would be a bloody battle and Valor didn’t want to endanger so many of his people if he could prevent it. As he stepped closer Jameson’s head jerked back and his nose twitched making it easy for Valor to see the wolf lying close to the surface. The man’s green eyes glowed like fire and when he spoke there was an underlying roughness that told Valor that the wolf wanted to come out and possibly eat him. “Caden. You smell like my dead brother Caden.” Fangs flashed in the lamplight. “Did you find his carcass and drain his blood, you sick bastard? Couldn’t resist free werekin blood? Don’t deny it. I can smell his scent all over you.” The beta came over and put a restraining hand on his alpha’s shoulder. “Fuck off True.” Jameson snarled, shoving the other man’s hand away. “You can get involved after I kill this vampire.” Was it better to let Jameson think Caden was dead? Would Caden come back if he thought there was no longer a threat? “Your brother is alive.” Stephan said stepping forward. Valor hissed at him. “You speak above yourself.” Stephan glared back. “I’m not getting into a war with werewolves because you want to protect your mutt.” Valor grabbed Stephan by the throat. “It isn’t your call to make. If I want to start a war I will.” He growled baring his fangs at the other man. Why now after all these years was his faithful sidekick speaking up? Jameson stepped forward, confusion on his handsome face. “I was told my brother was dead. I’m sorry if I jumped to conclusions but if you know anything at all it will help relations between us.”
Valor’s anger spiked. “He didn’t die he was threatened and beat up by members of your pack. Forgive me if I don’t feel compelled to help you people.” He shook the vampire in his hands for good measure. “I already killed the men who told me they murdered my brother to assure my alpha status. However I came here to discuss a common enemy.” He gave a pointed look at Valor. “As well as a common friend.” “Whether we have anything in common remains to be seen but we can have further discussions in the dining room.” Despite Caden’s fear of his brother, Valor wasn’t getting psychotic werewolf vibes from the alpha. If nothing else the other man seemed concerned. He’d think it was all a misunderstanding if Caden hadn’t told him about being beaten. There was more to this story than the surface facts. Jameson laughed. “Isn’t it strange for a vampire to have a dining room?” Valor shrugged. “Our humans have to eat too.” He tossed Stephan aside pleased when the other man made a crunching sound against the wall. At least a few of his bones were broken. *** Jameson watched the vampire as they entered the dining room, a formal eating area that would make any palace proud. A large contingent of vampires followed like a quiet cloud not making any sound. If Jameson couldn’t smell them he would’ve thought they were ghosts. They smelled sort of dusty and earthy making his nose tingle. The only one who smelled like anything was Valor and he smelled like his brother, like pack. It was disconcerting to catch that scent on one of the undead but it only cemented Jameson’s suspicion that Valor knew where his brother was. After months of mourning maybe he would soon know the answer to the question that bothered him the most. What had happened to his brother? He waited until everyone was settled and eating a rather excellent meal before the interrogation began. “So where’s my brother?” Valor shrugged. “I don’t know.” Jameson was surprised to smell no scent of deception on the vamp. “You really don’t do you?” Valor shook his head. “He left me after your mother marked the gate.” “What are you talking about? This is the first time we’ve come here.” Jameson said. “I don’t think my mother even knows where to find vampires.” Something was wrong. There were too many inconsistencies. “Caden went running with the guard dogs and when they came to the gate he smelled that someone marked it. He said it was your mother, Eliza. Not wanting to endanger me he left.” Valor waved a hand in the air indicating the end. Jameson gave a short bitter laugh. “Don’t be an idiot. Even if everyone in the pack came and marked your mansion my brother would never leave his mate behind.” From the flash in the vampire’s eyes Jameson gleaned the truth. Valor knew he was Caden’s mate.
“I don’t know where he is. But I do know he said it was his brother’s mother who left markings. Unless he has more than one brother, that would be you. Caden left me to keep me safe. And if any of you do anything to hurt him I will hunt you down and kill you all.” Jameson watched as before his eyes the calm, suave man turned into a red-eyed fanged creature. Gone was the cool vampire discussing things over a nice steak, in his place was a monster who looked like he’d happily rip him apart and drain his blood. For the first time in his life, Jameson felt true fear. A quick glance proved that the vampires were backing away also. The pictures on the walls began to shake with the force of the vampire’s rage. A female vamp looked at him with wide, panicky eyes. “Only your brother can calm him.” “Valor.” Jameson called hoping he shared enough of his brother’s genetics to calm the other man. Glowing red eyes pinned him with the force of the vampire’s anger. “You aren’t him. You are the reason he’s gone.” Shit. Jameson’s mouth went dry. “I didn’t scare him off. I love my brother but some members of my pack want him dead. I killed the ones who claimed to have murdered him.” “You are the leader. You are responsible. Someone still hunts my lover.” With one hand the angry vampire flipped the twenty-foot table of solid wood across the room exposing the hiding werekin. “I will kill you all. Then I’ll kill the rest of the pack to make sure he’s safe.” The words were more chilling for the calm, musing tone they were uttered in. An evil smile crossed the vampire’s lips. “Yes, that will bring back my sweet boy. I’ll start with you.” Fuck. Jameson knew from the look in the vamp’s eyes that he wouldn’t be able to shift before Valor ripped out his throat. This was one of those times when it was better to run for it. His eyes quickly scanned for an exit. Why the fuck did his brother have to choose a man who was as powerful as he was insane. “Valor, stop it.” A commanding voice said from the doorway. To Jameson’s shock the vibrations stopped immediately and the fire in Valor’s eyes faded to a dim glow. Caden walked into the room as calm as you please as if it was nothing to stop a raging vampire in his tracks. Jameson had to admit his little brother was looking well. His blond hair glowed with power and a soothing energy poured from him, countering the rage filling the room. Before Jameson’s amazed eyes Caden walked up to the insane monster and slid his fingers between Valor’s to hold his hand. Instantly it was as if all the power and anger was sucked back into the vampire. “You came back to me.” Valor’s voice took on a caressing quality as he slid his other hand into Caden’s brilliant hair. “I missed you, my love.” “I never left you, Valor.” Caden’s voice was soft but tired. Jameson couldn’t even imagine the terrible strain it was for his brother to be separated from his mate. “I was trying to protect you.”
“You broke my heart.” Until that moment Jameson would’ve sworn that vampires had no hearts. The look in Valor’s eyes as he watched Caden said otherwise. Devotion glowed in the formerly mad eyes as he tilted Caden’s head up for a kiss. Jameson looked away. There was something so intimate about the way they looked at each other that surpassed even the matebond of werekin. “They’re soulbonded.” True whispered in awe over his shoulder. “I thought that was a myth.” Jameson nodded. “So did I.” There was a story told to each werekin during childhood about a human and a werekin who were so much in love that their souls merged and they created a soulbond. It was believed by werekin that the only way a werekin and a non-werekin could have children was if they were bonded at the soul level. Jameson had never seen it before but he was certain that if Valor wasn’t undead and Caden was a female the pair of them would have been able to populate the earth. He could tell by the smell in the air that they shared the kiss of the goddess. The moon goddess supported their mating. “Fuck I want some of that.” Jameson turned to see True staring at the pair still kissing. “I thought you liked women.” Jameson said. “I do but none of them ever kissed me like that.” Jameson looked back at the pair and saw what True was talking about. The pair was kissing like they were the only two people in the universe. It wasn’t the passion of the kiss, though that was certainly there, it was the sweetness and affection that if he hadn’t seen it for himself, Jameson wouldn’t have thought the psychotic vampire was capable of such emotion. From the looks of it Caden had the vampire firmly wrapped around his little finger, an alliance that could prove extremely useful if he could get his brother on his side. Finally, Caden broke the kiss only to have Valor pick him up and lift him high against his chest. Valor turned to the room at large and gave a quick glance around even though Jameson was certain the vampire didn’t see them. “Have some food, stay the evening, we’ll talk tomorrow. I will be busy tonight.” With those words the large vampire carried Caden out of the room. Stephan stepped forward his arm at an odd angle but obviously healing. “I’ll have new steaks readied and rooms prepared if you don’t mind retrieving the table?” “Not at all. Tell me does that happen often?” “What?” “Does he lose control like that?” As easily as Caden brought Valor under control, Jameson worried about his brother being in an abusive relationship. Men who couldn’t control their anger were bad news and although he didn’t understand his brother’s attraction to men he wouldn’t have him injured for the world. Stephan’s eyes followed the pair. “Not as often as it used to. After so many years, ancient vampires give into bloodrage. Valor is one of our eldest. I thought we’d lose him when Caden vanished. He’s the only one who can handle Valor. If someone was able to control Caden they could control the tribe.”
Jameson didn’t like the look of longing in Stephan’s eyes. “Trust me when I tell you that my brother is not so easily handled.” “We’ll see.” Stephan said with a toothy smile. “We’ll see.” With those words the vampire left the room. “Your little brother better watch his back.” True said watching the vampire leave. “Yeah, looks like Caden has more than his share of enemies. But I have a feeling his mate won’t let him go anytime soon.” *** “Valor you better fucking uncuff me!” Caden screamed. He tried shifting but he was too angry to initiate the change. He tugged at the iron shackles wrapped around the bedpost shouting obscenities at his lover. “Hush darling, you’ll upset the little werewolves downstairs and then they’ll come up and I don’t think you want them to see you like this.” “Like what? Ripping out your throat? I’m okay with that.” “No.” Valor tore off Caden’s pants. “Stark naked and being fucked into tomorrow. By the way where did you get the clothes?” “I had a pack stashed. I didn’t get a chance to get it before everything happened.” Caden panted as Valor nibbled on his hip. “Why? Worried I might have fucked strangers for cash?” “No. Just wondering if someone needed to die for touching what is mine.” He licked a line from neck to cock taking a detour to lick Caden’s belly button and nibble on his hip. “I won’t forgive you for this.” Caden told him. “Sure you will. After twenty or thirty orgasms I’ll make you even forget your name. Now shut up and take my dick like the tough little werehound that you are.” Caden stifled a laugh. Really the situation wasn’t funny but being with Valor felt like home. Tension, building since he left his mate, relaxed inside Caden as Valor’s body joined with his. “Oh, my mate.” He whispered when Valor was fully seated inside. “I missed you so much.” Valor said stroking Caden’s head. His body was still as he touched the werehound’s head and planted soft kisses across Caden’s face. It was both touching and frustrating. As much as he enjoyed the gentle side of his lover, after weeks of doing without, Caden wanted a hard pounding. “Fuck me. I want to feel you into next week.” “Oh honey, you’re going to feel me into the next millennium.” Valor said. “Big talker.” The sensation of Valor pushing inside him was enough to make tears well up in his eyes. Damn he’d missed his mate. He was a fool to have left him, but he’d panicked and ran, worried that something bad would happen to his beloved vampire. If his brother hadn’t come he might have stupidly stayed away from Valor for much longer. “Damn I missed you.” He gave a moan as the vampire dipped his head and kissed him. Devouring Valor’s taste, Caden absorbed his lover’s essence as he inhaled the vampire’s scent into his lungs. His animal senses reveled in the smell of his lover, the smell of love, security and pack. He might not be a member of his brother’s pack any more but a portion of Caden’s DNA would
always yearn for a pack of his own, even if he was only a pack of two. Spending the last few weeks alone proved to him that he would never do well as a lone wolf. He yearned for his lover with every inch of his being and if Valor died he knew that he would soon follow. He felt the moment his mate’s patience snapped. “You will focus on me.” Valor said his eyes glowing eerily in the dimly lit room. The vampire gripped Caden’s hips and yanked him closer. Caden lifted his legs and wrapped them around Valor’s waist, locking his ankles for leverage. Caden nodded his agreement words failing him in the heat of passion. “Hold on honey it’s going to be a wild ride.” “Want me to turn over?” What could he say it was one of his favorite positions? “No!” Valor shouted. “I want to see you. Look into your eyes while I fill you with my seed and mark you so that none of those fucking werewolves downstairs even think about making you theirs.” Caden could’ve told him that the other werekin weren’t interested, but Valor shifted angles and nailed his prostrate. All thoughts went out the window as he howled with the pleasure. By the time both of them were fully satisfied there was no doubt in Caden’s mind that Valor missed him while he was gone. After the fifth time, Valor released the shackles. Happy in his mate’s arms, Caden snuggled up next to his lover and fell asleep. Waking up before Valor, Caden slid out of bed careful not to disturb the vamp. He didn’t want his overprotective lover awake for this encounter. It was time to talk to Jameson and find out what the hell he was up to. Dressing quickly, Caden slipped out of the room and followed his brother’s scent all the way back to the dining room. Apparently the werekin were still enjoying Valor’s hospitality making him wonder how long he’d been asleep. Hopefully Valor would stay asleep until the following evening. Caden examined Jameson carefully as he walked into the room. He’d ignored his brother previously in his rush to calm Valor, but now that he had time to look Jameson over there was no denying the fact that his brother looked older. His eyes were bloodshot, his dark hair was lackluster and there were a few new wrinkles that hadn’t been there only a few months ago. Carefully looking at all five of the werekin, Caden evaluated their strengths and weaknesses, confident he could take at least three of them. His brother and True were the only ones he doubted. They knew his strengths, weaknesses and wouldn’t underestimate him. If he had to attack he would take them out first. Anything to protect his mate. If Jameson had a hidden agenda to kill the vamps he’d have to go through Caden before he got anywhere near Valor. Caden let a low rumble roll from his chest, a sub vocal warning among the werekin. Jameson stood up and bowed to him, not a subservient motion with exposure of the neck, but of one warrior to another. It wasn’t something he’d ever done for Caden before.
“Congratulations on your mating brother, even if your choice is rather unusual.” There was a teasing look in Jamie’s eyes that Caden remembered from his childhood and had rarely seen since. He brushed aside the memories. Distractions could be deadly. “Why are you here?” A low growl filled Caden’s words, an alpha protecting his home territory. Jameson’s eyes glowed at the sound. “Do not challenge me brother, I already mourned your death once, I know I can withstand your death again.” Caden lost his aggression with his surprise. “What are you talking about?” “Those idiots came back and said they’d killed you to protect my alpha position.” Jamie growled. “I had nothing to do with your attack.” The alpha closed his eyes for a second as if looking at Caden was too painful. “I mourned for you, Caden. I thought you were dead. Why didn’t you come back to me and let me know you were all right?” “Because they said you’d sent them. I thought maybe your mother had turned you against me at last.” Jameson’s mother hated Caden with a passion. A feeling that was completely reciprocal. Caden relived the moment of betrayal in his mind. The horrible moment he found out that the one person he thought loved him sent others to kill him. Pain knifed through his chest at the memory. Even though he believed Jamie, the memory still had the power to hurt. “I am here, my love.” Valor’s arms wrapped around him sending a soothing calm to his troubling memories. Soaking in his lover’s comfort, Caden leaned back against the vampire’s naked chest. Jamie leaned forward his eyes intent. “I never betrayed you. I don’t know what they said to you but don’t believe it. You may be my half-brother by birth but you are the full brother of my soul. I didn’t think my mother had anything to do with your attack and I don’t know why she was here earlier. I’ll ask her when I return to camp. I can’t ask the ones who attacked you if she was involved, they’re all dead.” The alpha stepped forward as if to touch Caden in reassurance but Valor pulled Caden back stepping them away from the other man’s touch. A low growl vibrated against Caden’s back. Jameson stepped back his expression hurt. “I’m not going to hurt him. What do I have to do to convince you of that?” “Actions speak louder than words.” Valor said over Caden’s head, he could feel the vibrations of his lover’s voice against his back. “I will give you the benefit of the doubt for now but if I see there is the slightest chance that you’ll harm a hair on Caden’s head I will kill you and all of your kin without mercy.” “Fair enough.” Jameson said. He gave his brother a longing look. “I missed you more than I thought possible brother.” Caden felt Jamie’s yearning like it was a physical ache. Werekin were a touching species. They conveyed most of their thoughts and emotions through sound and touch. Not being able to touch
someone he loved was like holding back a piece of his soul. He started to step forward only to be held back by his lover. “You forgive too easily, my love.” Valor said pressing a kiss on the top of Caden’s head. “Give it time.” “If you thought I was dead why are you here?” “We lost three of the pack to hunters last week. I heard a rumor that the vamps were having the same problem and I thought it would be wise to join forces.” “What’s your plan?” Valor asked. There was a little muttering between the vampires and the werewolves, but everyone knew the truth. If they were going to survive this wave of hunters they needed to work together. For the first time in known history, vampires and werewolves sat at the same table and worked out a plan to fight the hunters.
*** Valor woke in a panic. Hands reaching out he relaxed when he felt the warm body of his lover. Still shaken he pulled Caden back into his arms. His worry only started to fade once he had his lover snuggled close. “Love you.” He whispered against the silky head. He felt Caden stiffen in his arms. “You don’t have to say that.” Valor turned Caden onto his back so he could see his face. “I meant it. I didn’t think I could fall in love but you proved me wrong. I love you and no one is going to convince me otherwise. Caden’s smile was blinding. “I love you too.” “I know.” Valor gave his lover a kiss before settling Caden against his side and snuggling close. “I think your brother has a good idea. Having the werewolves guard us during the day while we sleep and in return having our support against the hunters is a good exchange of skills. I’m also assigning you bodyguards.” “Like hell you are.” Caden pulled out of Valor’s arms and sat up to face his lover. “I might not be the toughest werekin in the world but I’ll be damned if I have bodyguards.” Valor’s hand stroked his face but the werehound refused to be charmed. “I mean it Caden.” A hard kiss sent his head spinning. “You don’t understand your position here, my love. Our relationship has been so quick that I haven’t had the chance to explain why you are so important. You are my lover and the only one I’ve ever loved in my long life. If someone captured you they would be able to get me to agree to anything.” Caden paled, his gold eyes looked at Valor with worry. “I-I’m sorry Valor. I didn’t know. I wouldn’t have stayed away. I never really left you, you know. I hung around and watched you. If Jameson hadn’t come I was going to break down and return to you. It was too painful watching you give up.”
“What did I have to live for once my heart was gone?” Valor asked pressing a kiss to Caden’s forehead. Caden laughed. “Very romantic and I would’ve bought it if I didn’t know you don’t have a heart.” “I have a heart, what do you think processes all that blood and it damn well was breaking.” Valor grumbled pulling his lover closer. He inhaled Caden’s scent and felt his hunger rise. “I need your blood.” There was no way to sugar coat it, he was starving. His lover tilted his neck giving it up like it was the most natural thing in the world. Maybe for him it was. Werekin were genetically programmed to provide for their mate. If Caden considered Valor his mate than he would feel it was his duty to provide Valor with sustenance. If he’d been werekin, Caden would’ve brought him a deer, but as a vampire Caden provided the only thing he needed, his blood. With a smile Valor licked his lover’s artery before biting down. Oh, glorious. He didn’t realize how starving he was until that moment. He could feel his body revive from the nutrients in his lover’s blood. No lover had ever satisfied him as well as his werehound. He wondered if that made Caden mated to him in the vampire way. Were vampire mates created through blood bonds? Valor had never given that any thought before. He knew a few vampires who declared themselves mates but for the most part no one wanted to claim another for the long centuries of a vampire’s life. He slid his teeth out of Caden’s neck and laved the wound while Caden moaned with passion. Valor would give up everything to live the next few millenniums with this man in his arms. A sudden thought occurred to him. “How long do werekin live?” “A few hundred years.” “Hmmm. You do know that you’re going to live longer don’t you? You might even see your old pack die of old age before you get your first grey hair.” Caden frowned at him, his adorable face scrunching in confusion. “What do you mean?” Valor took his lover’s hands in his own, an awkward motion while they were lying down. “As you are my lover, each time I bite into you my saliva extends your life even longer. Since we bonded you are the only one I can feed from now and as long as I bite you, you will live a long extended life.” The appalled look on Caden’s face made his heart sink. “You mean if I hadn’t returned you would’ve starved to death?” The relief he felt over Caden’s response calmed Valor immensely even as it instilled a little guilt. His lover’s first response was to worry about him while Valor’s only response was to bind his werekin lover to him by any means. He wasn’t two thousand years old due to a fluke of nature. He was a ruthless bastard who didn’t mind twisting people’s perception to get what he wanted. He wanted Caden badly. There was little he wouldn’t do to keep this beautiful man in his bed and by his side.
“It doesn’t matter now.” Valor said as Caden laid his head on Valor’s chest. A move the vampire found endearing. He’d never had a lover so relaxed around him. But then this was the first lover he couldn’t kill. Valor had the feeling that Caden would still rest with him trustingly even if he didn’t know he was the only one safe from Valor’s anger. Valor stroked the soft head enjoying a rare moment of peace and letting the sensation sink into his bones. A loud knocking at the door ruined the moment. “Master Valor, hunters have invaded the grounds.” Caden jumped out of bed, pulling Valor after him. The vampire was momentarily shocked by his lover’s strength and was even more surprised when he suddenly found himself dressed and being dragged towards a closet. Apparently his lover had only been humoring him by letting himself stay shackled. “You can hide in here until they pass.” Caden said snapping Valor out of his thoughts. Valor dragged his feet only to be lifted and tossed over the smaller man’s shoulder. “I can’t chance them killing my mate. Sorry love.” Valor didn’t get a chance to object before Caden stuffed him in his closet, the door abruptly closed. He touched the door only to jerk his hand back when a crackle of energy sparked against his touch. “Don’t touch the door, love. I used a little werekin magic to bind it closed.” Valor didn’t know werekin had magic. Shit. There was the sound of clothes shifting and then the creak of the door. He heard Stephan’s voice come into the room. “Where’s Master Valor?” “Safe. Let’s take care of the intruders.” Caden’s tone was cold and authoritative, his alpha nature coming through. Despite his anger at his lover Valor’s body hardened at Caden’s takecharge attitude. Now if he could just get the man to use some of it with him in the bedroom. Biting back his smile Valor listened. “Yes, sir.” Stephan said. Valor smiled at that. The vampire was always so capable and trustworthy. “And if there is anything else I can help you with. Anything.” Stephan’s voice left no doubt what he included in that help. It was a shame he’d have to kill his assistant “Um. Thanks. Is my brother awake?” Howling filled the air along with the distinct sound of gunfire. “Shit.” A surge of power tingled across Valor’s skin telling him that Caden had shifted. A loud howl sounded outside the closet and then vanished. Caden must have gone to join the fight. “He certainly is a powerful thing.” Stephan’s said through the door. “You doing all right in there, sire?” “How did you know I was in here?”
“The door is glowing blue.” “Can you open it? I have to protect Caden.” “Caden has the entire pack and most of the vampires protecting him. He’ll be fine. Besides I think he keyed the door to his touch. Pretty sophisticated for a furbreed.” There was an odd note of disdain when Stephan talked about Caden that sent alarms up Valor’s back. Something was wrong. “Stephan, how did the hunters get inside?” “Sorry Valor I can’t hear you. I’ve got to go. Your lover might need a hand.” Stephan gave a chilling laugh. Panic seized Valor. He pounded on the door causing sparks to fly around him. Whatever spell his lover used was holding. “No!” Something was wrong he just knew it. Valor pounded on the door for what felt like hours, before it opened suddenly and he found himself looking into Jameson’s worried gaze. “Where is he?” “The hunters got him.” “How?” “Stephan shot him with a dart and gave him to the hunters. We found out too late to stop him.” “Why? Why would Stephan betray me like that?” That was the thing that made the least sense. “He’s been with me for centuries.” “Turns out your Stephan was biding his time until you were insane enough to be destroyed. Caden ruined his timeline. He figured if he got rid of your mate then you would go insane and he could declare a hunt. Apparently he made quite a few side deals that depended on your death. When they looked like they were going to fall through he made a deal with the hunters. In exchange for Caden they said they were willing to leave the vampire tribe alone. From what Stephan said they are doing experimentations on werekin and prefer them over vamps.” “How did you get the information from him?” Jameson flashed a wide toothy smile. “He got really chatty when we ripped off his legs.” Caden was disappointed. He would’ve appreciated being part of the interrogation. “So there’s nothing left?” “Nothing identifiable.” “Shit. Where did the hunters take Caden?” “I have True tracking them.” “I owe you a debt for taking care of Stephan.” “There is no debt. Caden is my brother.” “I’m going to paddle your brother’s ass when I get him back. Fucker locked me in the closet.” Jameson pinned him with his werewolf eyes. “We will get him back. Even if he has started a pack of his own, he will always be my brother.”
Pack of his own? Valor liked the sound of that. True burst into the room, “I found him.” He said gasping for breath. “They have him in a warehouse ten miles from here.” Bending over at the waist, True panted to regain his breath. “Let’s go.” Valor raced past the werewolf feeling Jameson on his heels as he went. His tribe waited for him at the bottom of the stairs. “We are going to take the hunters at their base. They have my mate. Feel free to drain them dry.” Donaldo’s eyes glowed with satisfaction. “I am beginning to see the benefits to your mate. It has been too long since we’ve had the satisfaction of a hunt.” For the first time in a while, Valor and Donaldo were completely in agreement. Valor clapped him in the back. “Steer clear of the werekin but any hunter is free for the taking. They took my mate. We are going to rip open their throats and bathe in their blood.” The crowd roared with blood thirst.
Chapter Four Caden woke in slow increments. The smell of blood, urine and vomit filled his nostrils making him want to empty his stomach at the stench. The only thing stopping him was the sickening thought that it would just add to the already overwhelming smells surrounding him. Lethargy sapped his strength and his skin was frozen where his hands and feet met the hard cement floor. He just had to hang on and Valor would come for him. He just had to hang on… That thought ran through Caden’s head like a hamster on a wheel. He’d told his brother where he’d put Valor in case he was killed in the altercation. When he cast the spell he put in a key that would allow Jamie to open the door with his touch. Little did he expect Stephan to just drug him and hand him over to the hunters. Apparently Stephan’s loyalty was only to Stephan. Valor was going to be angry at him when he got out, Caden hoped he didn’t take it out on Jameson. A pang went through Caden as he thought of the pain Valor must be feeling over his longtime companion’s betrayal. He doubted Stephan would survive the betrayal. Sending out his senses Caden realized he must be underground. He couldn’t hear the whisper of the goddess or feel the moon’s call. For the first time in his life Caden felt truly on his own. Even separated from the pack he could feel the goddess at his shoulder. Now he felt nothing, empty, defenseless. Shit. He just had to hang on for Valor to come for him. Footsteps echoed in the hall, the sound of guards coming towards him. Fear chilled Caden from the inside out. He’d heard stories about what happened to werekin once they were captured. None of them had a happy ending unless you didn’t mind your skin decorating some human’s house. Still weak from the drug, Caden couldn’t muster the strength to stand. His muscles didn’t cooperate with the signals his brain was desperately trying to send. Without the feel of the moon Caden couldn’t shift. These hunters knew their stuff. The footsteps stopped before they got to Caden’s cell and he felt a shameful moment of relief that they had decided to torture some other unfortunate soul. “No!” The scream echoed through the hallway, the sound so terror filled that Caden’s eyes watered in sympathy. Where are you my love? Valor’s rich voice slipped into Caden’s mind, a welcome intrusion. Deep underground. I cannot feel the pull of the goddess. Caden desperately replied. Despite the strange circumstances and being a prisoner it was the lack of the goddess’ touch that terrified him the most. We are coming for you. He just had to hang on. Concentrating on his lover’s voice, Caden missed the footsteps coming closer. Without warning his cell swung open. Caden snapped his eyes shut hoping they would think he was still out.
“This one is our best find. He’s the brother of the alpha pack and the vampire leader’s boyfriend. He’s the perfect bait.” From their scents, Caden could tell there were two guards. Fuck. He could barely take one guard in his current condition there was no way he could take two. “How did you get hold of him?” “The usual. One of the vampires got greedy. He handed him over with the agreement that we’d leave the vamps alone.” The guards laughed together. “Idiot.” One guard said scornfully. “Grab the werehound. He’s probably still drugged. I don’t think the vampire cared if he lived or died.” “That makes three of us.” The other guard said with a chuckle like they were sharing a good joke. Caden wished he could shift and rip out both their throats but his position was precarious. He let his body lay lax as the guard picked him up and draped him across one beefy shoulder like a sack of potatoes. They’re taking me to the surface. Caden sent to Valor while trying to keep his body limp. “I think he’s waking up.” The guard carrying said patting Caden on the ass. “Too bad he’s an animal, he’s pretty enough to fuck before he dies.” “Keep your mind on the work.” The other guard said his voice stern with warning. Caden thought the trip would never end. Opening his eyes a slit all he could see was white tile along the hall and hear the cries of others trapped in rooms. He wondered how big the facility was and if there were any way to save the others before the hunters finished with them too. The next doorway they passed led to the outside. Caden almost let out a howl of relief as the cool wind brushed across his face. Before he had the chance to act, the guard carrying him tossed him through the air and Caden landed with a thud onto a patch of wet grass. For a brief moment the scents of rich earth, dewy moisture, and gun powder overwhelmed his senses. Caden waited until he heard the guards footsteps fade away before he sat up. “Oh, you’re alive.” A soft male voice said beside him. Caden turned to the sound. A slim dark-haired man, a few inches taller than him, crouched on the ground. The other man’s eyes were a warm caramel. “You’re a werekin too?” He held out his hand. “I’m Sam.” “Caden.” Caden said shaking. The pair shook hands small sparks tingling across their skin from the contact of werekin to werekin. Sam used their joined hands to pull Caden to his feet. “Thanks.” Sam’s eyes shifted from side to side as if looking for a trap. “You’re the first one they put in here with me.”
Caden looked around and saw that although he was outside, he was still surrounded by high fences and barbed wire. A quick glance showed guards posted intermittently along the top of the roofs. A smaller wire enclosure surrounded the two werekin almost eight feet round not leaving a lot of space between them. “How long have you been here?” Caden asked. He didn’t know if their conversation was being monitored but he didn’t want to give away the fact that help was on the way. “T-Two months.” Sam said his teeth chattering. “They picked me up when I was coming home from college.” Caden couldn’t imagine two months in these sadistic hunters hands. Sam looked too thin and his eyes had the wild look of a werekin who hadn’t shifted in far too long. “Have they prevented you from shifting?” Sam nodded tapping the collar at his throat that Caden hadn’t noticed before. “It counters the electricity I generate when I shift and stops me from changing.” Caden felt his own neck. His fingers touched a rough band of material. It felt like the one he saw around Sam’s neck. Panic scraped him raw from the inside out. His beautiful necklace was missing. “What’s wrong?” “They took my necklace.” Sam patted him sympathetically on the back. “They took all my stuff too.” “You don’t understand. It came from my mate. It’s the only thing he’s ever given me.” “It’s probably in the manager’s office. I’ve heard him bragging about the money he gets for fencing our stuff.” Caden hoped he could get it back. A necklace like that could bring in a lot of money. “You should be more concerned about what they are going to do to you rather than where your trinket went.” Curiosity had Caden asking, “What do you think they’re going to do?” Sam shrugged. “Maybe force us to change and fight each other. They can feed electricity through the bands and make us shift. I’ve seen them feed so much power through a collar that they drove a werekin to attack his mate.” Sam said it so matter-of-factly that Caden knew it was a possibility. “Don’t you care if I kill you?” Caden asked after that cold recital. Sam looked at him, his face pale. “It’s not that I don’t value my life. It’s that I doubt I’ll be alive for the dawn. They’ve gotten all they can from me and now they have you. They don’t like to have more than twenty to take care of at a time.” The dark-haired werekin didn’t look upset; he was too resigned for that. Caden wanted to tell him that Valor was coming but he didn’t know if Sam was trustworthy. As far as he knew the other man could be a spy. Two months in the hands of hunters could make a young werekin agree to just about anything. The hunters were only guessing that Valor and Jameson would come for him at this point. If he admitted it to Sam they would know for sure. He settled for patting the other man on the back.
“Don’t give up hope.” Sam gave him a tired smile. “I can’t give up something I don’t have.” A lone wolf howl filled the air. Jameson. He’d recognize his brother’s howl anywhere. Floodlights pierced the sky illuminating the surrounding area. Caden smiled when he saw dozens of wolves circling the compound. They were big, grey and snarled at the lights. “Who the hell are they?” Sam asked his voice hushed with wonder. “The Calvary.” Gunshots echoed in the night air scattering the wolves. Caden didn’t smell any blood. He hoped that meant no one was injured. There was a soft noise followed by the sound of shattering glass. The searchlights went dark. It took Caden’s eyes a moment to adjust to the change in lighting. “Missing me, my love?” Valor’s voice was silky smooth but Caden heard the concern in his rich tones. “I was.” “Who’s that?” Sam’s voice was intrigued and the smell of lust filled the air. “He’s mine.” Caden said flashing his fangs. “Now, now, pet take it easy. I am a one werehound vamp.” The snap of the gate opening heralded Valor’s arrival inside. A cool hand wrapped around Caden’s arm. “Let’s get going love, your holiday with the psycho hunters is over. Did they harm you?” Caden shook his head. “They didn’t have the chance. They were too busy setting me out as bait. But they took my necklace.” Caden blinked back tears at the loss. It was stupid to yearn for a piece of jewelry he didn’t want in the first place but it was the only piece of Valor he had with him in those lonely weeks of separation. A surge of electricity jolted Caden in the neck sending him screaming to the ground. “Ahhh.” He screamed scrabbling at his neck. Like a faraway sound he heard Sam screaming beside him. Caden fought the change as he’d never fought anything before. Something bad would happen if he shifted, he just knew it. This wasn’t natural, this wasn’t a gift from the goddess, this was a perversion of everything he held dear about being a werekin. “No. I won’t shift.” He growled through clenched teeth. “Someone help me get this thing off of him.” He heard Valor shout. Screams filled the air as the werewolves took care of the men who hunted them for sport. Caden clawed at the collar trying to focus enough to use his magic, but his mind was too scrambled fighting the electricity surging through the metal. “I’ve got it love. I’ve got you.” Valor chanted over and over, and then suddenly he was free. Gasping for air, Caden lay in Valor’s arms gripping his lover’s arms as his lifeline.
A crunching sound jerked his attention over to Sam. The other werekin had half-shifted and froze in that position neither man nor beast. The trapped look in his eyes told their own story. He was stuck. “Kill me.” Sam whispered. Caden let Valor help him to his feet and patted his brother’s arm. Jamie had come to Caden’s aid to help remove the collar. “Help me remove his collar.” He said to his brother. Jamie nodded. Between the two of them they were able to rip off the offending metal. Sam remained in his partially shifted state. With a heavy heart Caden knew Sam would never be able to change in either direction towards man or beast. Tears filled Caden’s eyes as he cradled Sam’s face between his hands. “May the goddess guide your steps in the afterlife.” Caden whispered. With a twist of his hands he snapped Sam’s neck, the sound echoing in the suddenly still night. Blinking back tears he let the young werekin’s body fall. A hand patted him on the shoulder. “You did the right thing.” Jamie said beside him. “He didn’t want to live like that.” A werekin changed against nature could never change back again. Every werekin knew that rule and no one would want to live the life of a monster. Caden nodded and when he brushed away tears with the backs of his hands no one commented. Donaldo came forward his long cape flowing behind him as he walked. As much of an ass as Donaldo was, Caden had to admit he did the vampire look well. The vampire stopped right in front of Caden. “In thanks for this wonderful blood hunt I thought I’d return this to you. I found it in a particularly delicious human’s office.” From his hand he dangled Caden’s collar. With a wide smile Caden snatched it and handed it over to Valor. “Put it on me.” “Yes my love.” Valor said in an amused tone. It wasn’t until he felt the cool metal against his skin once more that Caden felt like he’d come home. With a happy sigh he turned to Donaldo. “Thank you.” The stern vampire gave him a dazzling smile. “You are most welcome werehound.” Donaldo gave him a dramatic bow. “I’ll see you back at the mansion.” As he vanished into the dark night Caden turned to Valor. “I almost like that man.” Valor wrapped Caden in his arms hugging him briefly. “Come with me. We’ll leave the hunters to the tribe and the werekin. We are going home.” Caden was tempted to stay behind. There wasn’t anything he could do more than the others but he felt guilty letting the others fight his fight. “You’ve had a rough night, darling. I need to have you in my bed where you belong.”
“What about the other prisoners?” It seemed cruel to just let them loose without any place to go. “True is already herding them home.” Jamie assured him. “We’ll help them get back to their families. If they don’t have one they can join mine.” “Good. I didn’t want them to be alone.” “You should be more concerned about me being alone.” Valor grumbled. Swallowing a laugh, Caden wrapped an arm around his lover and let Valor take him back to his bed where he belonged. *** Valor’s bed was as decadent as Caden remembered. It seemed too long since he’d lain in his lover’s bed when in reality it was a mere matter of hours. Caden took a deep breath taking the essence of their combined scent deep into his lungs. Valor growled behind him. It wasn’t a happy sound. His vampire was pissed. “You locked me in my closet.” He wouldn’t apologize. He wouldn’t. “It was for your safety.” Caden said. He turned to face his lover. It was never a good idea to have an angry vampire at your back. Valor’s eyes were flaring red. Oops. Caden placed his hands on Valor’s wrists. “I would do it again if I thought it would keep you safe.” All of the anger left Valor with a rush as the vampire wrapped Caden in his cool embrace. “I know as a werekin you feel the need to protect what is yours.” Valor leaned back. “But know this. Even though we are mates I am the one who protects our safety. If you hadn’t locked me in, Stephan wouldn’t have been able to get to you.” Caden shook his head. “If you hadn’t been safe, Stephan would have killed you in order to get to me. He wanted you gone. I was just a tool in his greater plans.” He just had to ask. “What happened to Stephan?” Valor flashed his fangs. “Your brother’s pack destroyed him before I got the chance.” Caden knew that must have infuriated his lover. Valor would’ve wanted the satisfaction of killing Stephan himself. Seeking to distract the vampire, Caden stripped off his shirt with a smile. Yep, that worked. Valor’s eyes tracked his every motion as he moved on to unbutton his pants.
“Trying to soothe the savage beast?” Valor asked with a smile. “Something like that.” *** Valor watched his lover strip down to nothing. His anger evaporated like smoke before the vision of his werehound. Beautiful, beautiful man. Still watching Caden’s motions, Valor ripped off his clothes, sending his boots flying over his shoulder. A crash sounded behind him. He didn’t even bother to look. At that moment there was nothing on this earth that warranted looking away from his lover as Caden crawled onto the bed and sprawled on it like a gourmet feast. Which in a way he was. “You are the most gorgeous thing in the world.” Valor whispered, climbing over Caden’s form. He got a wide smile for his efforts. “Haven’t gotten tired of me yet?” The words were said in a joking tone but the golden eyes told the truth. Caden was nervous. “I could live another thousand years and not get tired of you.” Valor settled to one side of his lover and pinned him with his gaze. “Even though vampires don’t have mates like werekin, you and I are bonded, my love. There will never come a time when I am done with you. Those weeks that we were apart were the longest ones in my life. I don’t ever want to feel that way again.” Valor closed his eyes instinctively trying to hide his pain. Familiar fingers slid through his hair. “I vow to you now, my mate. I will never again willingly leave you and if I leave, know that I will always come back.” “Promise.” He opened his eyes to capture his lover’s gaze. “I promise.” Caden said a smile on his soft lips. Valor gave into his yearning and pressed his lips to Caden’s lips in a gentle embrace. Well it started out gentle. The feel of his lover’s mouth was too much for Valor’s thin control. With a groan he slid his tongue into the hot recesses of Caden’s mouth, licking inside to absorb the flavor of his werehound. Caden tasted like musk and magic his own particular flavor. No one else in the world tasted like that, only Caden. He was pleased that he didn’t smell or taste any of the drugs Stephan had pumped him full of. “I need to taste you.” Valor said. Without hesitation Caden tilted back his head exposing his neck for the vampire’s bite. A pang of warmth filled Valor. No doubt or negotiation like lovers in the past. He needed, Caden provided. Sometimes he really appreciated how uncomplicated his lover was. The werekin instinct to provide for his mate made Valor feel less needy because at least he saved Caden the trouble of having to take down a buffalo or something.
Filled with his lover’s rich blood Caden retracted his fangs, licking the spot he’d bitten. As his lover healed immediately, it was an unnecessary act but a lifetime habit was hard to overcome. “Stop thinking so much.” Caden muttered sliding his warm hands across Valor’s skin. Valor hummed his pleasure as his lover’s heat seeped into his body. All that smooth bare skin was his. He wanted Caden. Deeply. Madly. Forever. “Mine.” He growled. His werehound gave him a soft smile of approval. “Yours.” Good. As long as they agreed. He’d hate to have to hunt down his lover. Especially since he knew Caden could get away whenever he wished. That thought gave him pause. He’d never had a lover who had so much power over him before. He didn’t know if liked that. “Those aren’t the only pack of hunters, my love. Others will come.” Caden licked his neck, his chest, nibbled one ear, sending shivers down Valor’s body and derailing his thoughts. What point was he trying to get across? “You were telling me it’s dangerous in the big bad world and I should stay and keep you company for the next few years.” “Centuries.” Caden chuckled against his neck, a strange sensation. “Are you going to protect me from everything.” “Yes.” Valor’s voice was strong and sure. “There isn’t anything that I wouldn’t protect you from.” “Sweet mate.” Caden said covering Valor’s mouth with his own. Fuck yeah. Wait. He tore his mouth away. “I’m not sweet.” That was one thing he was certain of. Caden smiled that smile that got him every time. “You’re sweet to me.” Was he? Then his werehound bit Valor’s neck and all thoughts vanished beneath a blinding rush of need and hunger. It was different having Caden bite him for once. Sexy. He wondered how Caden’s blood would taste closer to his groin, was it richer? Stronger? He made a vow to find out some day soon. Noone’s blood had ever tasted as good as Caden’s. He lifted his fangs and licked his lover’s neck. “Mate.” He whispered into Caden’s ear. With a cry his werehound came. Smiling, Valor settled down to sleep lying against Caden’s chest, calmed by the beat of his lover’s heart.
Caden woke up and knew what he had to do today. He had to go to his brother’s pack and investigate his enemy. He suspected Eliza was the one who sentenced him to death. She was too crazy to keep an alpha position and tried to rule the pack through her son. Unfortunately, her tracks proved that she knew where his lover lived, making her a danger that had to be eliminated. Now that Caden knew Jameson hadn’t been behind his attack, Caden felt bloodbound to help his brother clean up his pack. Valor’s head lay against him. Stroking his lover’s hair, he couldn’t stop the smile spreading across his face. He was probably the only one in the world who knew the big, bad vampire leader was a closet snuggler. With a series of wiggles he slowly escaped his mate’s clutches and made it to the end of the mattress. “You aren’t sneaking out again while I sleep, are you?” Valor’s voice was more resigned than angry so Caden’s muscles relaxed. “I have to go and see my brother.” “Be careful. If you aren’t here by the time I awaken I won’t be happy.” Valor said pulling the covers back over his face and snuggling in. Caden smiled happy that his lover trusted him to handle things on his own. He knew how difficult it was for his controlling lover to let him go especially after his kidnapping but if Caden was ever going to be confident in his abilities again he needed to do this. Besides it wasn’t as if they both didn’t know that Valor would follow Caden a few minutes after he left. Just in case he needed help. Caden stepped outside growling when he smelled another werekin on the breeze. “Peace alpha brother I am only here to guard your mate’s tribe.” “I don’t know you.” Caden said looking up at the dark-haired man looming over him. He took a deep breath and was pleased when the man didn’t smell of deceit or ill will. He recognized the man as one of the pack with Jamie last night but he didn’t know who he was in the pack. “I am Rory. New to the pack. Alpha Jameson sent me. I was here when he met with Valor last night. He needed new enforcers after he killed the others for their treachery.” It was Jameson’s enforcers who attacked Caden and led him to think his brother was involved. With an effort he shook off the bad memories. “Very well. Thank you for watching over my mate while I go visit my brother.” “It is my duty and pleasure.” The werewolf answered with a bow. Caden could hear the sincerity in his voice. Reaching for the animal inside Caden shifted as he leapt off the porch. “By the moon goddess.” The guard shouted. Caden spun around to see the guard was looking at him. “I heard rumors but I’ve never seen anyone shift so quickly.”
It was hard to smirk in his hound form but Caden thought he did it well when the guard laughed. “Show off.” Caden gave a happy bark and ran off into the night confident that Rory would let his brother know he was coming. Jameson got off the phone with Rory and looked out the window. His brother would want to know about his progress and he was sad to say he had little. The notion Caden had that Eliza was responsible was ridiculous. His mother was a little obsessive but even she wouldn’t kill off a relative. Would she? Unfortunately the werekin who ambushed Cade were dead and unable to give testimony. He should’ve talked to them but the smell of his brother’s blood and their wide smiles snapped something inside. Slaughtering them where they stood was his instinctive response. Now he regretted it. Sort of. Well the not interrogating them portion. A knock on his study pulled his attention from his memories. Anticipating his brother Jameson called out “Open.” His mother walked in the room. “Good evening, son.” “Mother.” Jameson stood up and kissed her on the cheek, the only familiarity she ever allowed. Even as a small child he never remembered her hugging him or showing him any form of affection. Her focus was always on Jameson becoming alpha and taking over the pack. He suspected she always hoped he’d challenge his father for the position but Jameson was content with his position at his father’s side until his untimely death. Jameson only stepped forward when it was clear his brother didn’t want to become leader. “I heard the news that your brother is still alive.” Her tone left nothing to the imagination. She wasn’t happy. Caden’s words came back into his mind. Was his mother capable of killing his brother? “Yes. I’m very happy to find out I was wrong.” Eliza’s eyes narrowed as she regarded her son. “Aren’t you worried he’ll come and challenge you for alpha?” Jameson threw back his head and laughed. “I don’t think his mate would take well to being dumped.” His mother paled. “He is going to procreate? Even if he isn’t interested in being alpha his children could come back and take over.” Her voice became increasingly strident as she talked. “Somehow I don’t think my vampire lover is going to help me have children. I’m pretty sure he’s barren.” Caden’s voice broke the shock that filled Jameson’s at his mother’s anger. Eliza whipped around. “Your mate is a vampire male.” Caden nodded.
“Congratulations.” Eliza’s joy was overdone fooling neither of the men. Jameson wondered if a female mate would’ve found an unpleasant end. The idea spun unpleasantly through the alpha’s mind. “You would’ve killed her.” “Who?” Eliza turned to face her son. “Caden’s mate. You would’ve killed his mate if it were female. Just as you killed his parents.” Jameson said stating something he’d always suspected but always feared to know. Eliza’s eyes widened. “I have no idea what you are talking about. I am very happy for Caden.” “Tell me mother. Were you just as happy when you had his parents run off the road?” It was like tearing off the surface and watching the evil team below. Eliza’s pleasant expression changed and her eyes glowed with anger. “They deserved it. He left me for that bitch and she loved it. She was always walking around like she was so special. Giving birth to the next alpha while she slept with the current one. She had my life. The life I should’ve lived.” Spittle flew from her mouth as she spoke like venom from a demented snake. Shock held Jameson motionless. A loud roar filled the room and Jameson watched the scene like a bad horror movie. His mother didn’t stand a chance when Caden’s hands transformed and the usually calm werehound ripped apart the older woman who had destroyed his life and the only people he’d every loved. Blood sprayed across Jameson’s desk drenching his papers with his mother’s blood. He knew he should feel pain or anger or any number of emotions but as he watched his brother destroy the woman who gave him birth all he felt was satisfaction. Although she was his mother she was an evil woman who needed to die, something Jameson wasn’t certain he would’ve been able to do. While Caden ripped his mother apart Jameson picked up the phone with shaking hands. “Yes alpha.” True answered his cell. “We need a cleanup crew in my office.” “What happened?” True’s voice sounded odd but Jameson brushed that concern aside. “My mother confessed to killing Caden’s family. He didn’t take it well.” “I’m on my way.” True said disconnecting. Still watching his brother with no emotion Jameson dialed Rory’s number. “Yeah boss.” “Tell Valor he’s needed.” “Not necessary.” Like a cool breeze, the vampire’s presence filled the room. Watching the dark-haired vamp enter his office reminded Jameson that his brother had a powerful leader as his mate. “You are not putting that mouth on mine until you thoroughly brush your teeth.” Valor said leaning against the doorframe. Caden turned and howled at his mate.
“Most men would be appalled at seeing their mate chew up another human being.” Jameson said watching the vampire’s calm with a little awe. Valor shrugged. “I’ve done worse. Besides, my baby wouldn’t eat her if she didn’t have it coming. I have no pity for anyone who gets Caden that angry.” “It’s my mother.” Jameson said. He still didn’t feel anything. Numbness took over and buried the horror at watching his mother torn apart. “Doesn’t look like you tried to stop him.” Valor said piercing him with knowing eyes. “She killed his parents. He has the right to justice.” Valor nodded. “Justice, but not a sore stomach. Come on love it’s time to go home. You’ve got to explain to me why you keep abandoning me while I sleep.” Caden turned his bloody face towards his mate, his were features vanishing as he looked at Valor. “She killed my parents and would’ve killed you if you were a female.” Valor stroked the bloody face with no sign of distaste. Jameson wondered if it was a mate or a vampire thing that prevented the other man from feeling disgust. If you were mated did you truly not care what the other person looked like? Jameson hoped one day to find out. Valor looked at his lover. Caden was covered in blood from head to toe. It even crusted his eyelashes. The smell made his mouth water but the distress pouring off his lover put a damper on his ardor. “She killed my family.” Caden said, tears filling his beautiful eyes. Valor stepped forward and wrapped an arm around his lover’s shoulders. “I’m sorry my sweet but you have me now. I am all the family that you need.” “Hey.” Jameson growled at him. “He still has me.” A sneer crossed the vampire’s face. “Every time he gets around you there’s danger. I’m not sure it’s wise to continue the relationship.” “He is werekin. He needs a pack.” Jameson said with a growl. He stood to confront Valor. “He can have my family as his pack.” Valor didn’t like the idea that Caden would need anyone but him. “I can provide for my mate’s needs.” “Don’t talk about me like I’m not here.” Caden said. A low growl rumbled through his body as he vocalized his displeasure. He walked up to his brother and gave him a pat on the back, leaving a bloody handprint across his shirt. “I’m sorry that I had to kill Eliza but only because now you have no living parent.” Jameson gave his brother a warm smile. “It isn’t your fault brother. At least I have you back.” His eyes flashed to Valor. “Maybe at least on full moon hunts.” Valor nodded at Caden’s anxious look. “I would be willing as long as you remember where to return at the end of the night.”
He wasn’t going to give on that not even a little. Caden was his and he wasn’t allowed to bunk down with other werekin even during full moon. No pilings of wolf bodies where his lover came home smelling of others. Caden nodded, his face pale as he looked at the remains of the woman lying on the floor. Valor knew that now that his rage was over the sight of what he did was overwhelming his lover. Valor wrapped a hand around Caden’s bloody head and hid his lover’s face against his chest ignoring the blood smearing across his silk shirt. “Look away, my love.” A knock sounded on the door and without waiting for a signal True walked through the door. “Holy fuck.” True said looking at the carnage. “We are on our way out.” Valor said, giving the big werekin a lethal glare. No one had the right to pass judgment on his lover. Caden let him lead the way out the door. “Come on love. It’s time to head back home.” His beautiful man nodded keeping his gaze on the floor. Valor looked at his lover and could practically feel him pulling away. “I think you’ll need a shower first.” Ah. He got a laugh over that one. Rubbing a hand in a soothing pattern across Caden’s back he gave a nod to Jameson and led Caden outside. The cool night air helped clear Valor’s head and ease the stench of blood from his nostrils. For once he was happy not to smell the life-giving liquid. Caden was quiet but amenable. Valor escorted him to the car when the driver pulled up. Rory jumped out of the driver’s seat and ripped open the back door his eyes riveted to Caden. “I just heard what happened. Is he all right?” “He’ll be fine.” Valor said. There was no other option. Life wasn’t worth living if his Caden wasn’t well. For the first time Valor was on the soothing side of the relationship. He ignored Rory’s speculative looks and the light of interest when he looked at Caden. Valor had no concern the interest would be returned. They were mates. *** The drive home was spent in silence with Caden curled up on Valor’s lap snuggling into the vampire’s arms where he belonged. Caden inhaled his lover’s scent discernible even beneath the stench of Eliza’s gore. The fragrance of Valor calmed his nerves, suppressing his violent thoughts. If he could put her back together again and kill her again he would. Flashes of his beloved parents played beneath his eyes like a movie. His mother’s smile, the one she had just for him. His father’s gentle hands as he put together one of Caden’s toys or patted him on the back. “You should’ve saved some of her for me.” Valor said. Caden nuzzled his lover. Mate. The knowledge that he now had someone of his own to love both soothed and terrified him. “I can’t lose you too.” Caden said frantically gripping Valor’s shirt.
“I’m really hard to kill, my love.” Valor said cradling him in his arms. “I can’t guarantee to live forever but I promise to stay by your side for as long as I do.” Caden released his grip. He knew he was being unreasonable but he just couldn’t seem to stop. “Thank you.” What else could he say? Luckily the car pulled up to Valor’s mansion before he could say anything truly stupid. He kept his thoughts to himself as Rory opened the door. Nodding absently to the observant werewolf he headed towards the front door and went straight to their bedroom. The soft sound of a zipper had him spinning around to get a good look at his lover. “Get out of those clothes love and into the shower. We both need to be cleansed of this evening before I rest for the day.” Caden nodded not trusting himself to speak. His throat felt tight with suppressed emotions. Grief for his parents, residual hate for Eliza and overpowering love for his mate all tangled together. “Focus on me.” Valor gripped Caden’s head between his hands. “I am the only thing you need to worry about.” Caden nodded, he knew that. His mate. His love. His everything. Valor helped him remove the rest of his clothing and shuffled him into the shower. Valor scrubbed Caden until he wasn’t sure his top layer of skin was still intact but he was certain there wasn’t a speck of dirt or blood anywhere on his body. The hot water relaxed his sore muscles and Valor’s loving hands eased his tired soul. “I love you.” Caden whispered into the steam, his head tilted back to rinse once more. A soft kiss was pressed to his lips. Mate. “I love you too my sweet one.” Valor said. Caden gave a broken laugh. “You still think I’m sweet after I tore Eliza apart?” “Even the sweetest person can be pushed too far.” Valor said stroking Caden’s wet locks. “Would you have killed her if she hadn’t killed your parents?” “No.” Valor shook his head. “I disliked her but I wouldn’t have killed her if she hadn’t killed first. I think she was feeling magnanimous and was going to let me live because I mated with someone who can’t have children.” Valor nodded his understanding. “You had to get rid of her so that she wouldn’t endanger you when you have children of your own.” Caden spun around. “Valor I’m never going to have children, you are my mate.” Valor gave Caden a tender smile. “Your brother told me that you are the last of your kind, my love. I don’t think the moon goddess would approve if I didn’t let you have pups of your own. When it is time we will have a surrogate give birth to your children and raise them as our own.” Caden was puzzled as he looked at the ancient vampire before him. “Are you telling me that you want my children?”
“Yes Caden. I am telling you that I want your children. I want little shapeshifters running through the halls and ripping up the carpets. I want small boys and girls with your hair and eyes shaking up the tribe with their antics. For the first time in my life my biologic clock is ticking and I’m not going to let a little thing like we’re both men and I’m undead stop us.” Caden burst out laughing. “Yes, I can see how we shouldn’t be bothered with such minor issues. Do you think the vamps will mind or try to bite them?” “If they mind they can go live some place else. And I’m pretty sure you can come up with a way to keep them safe. After all you did magically lock me in a closet.” “Won’t they die before me?” That was one concern of his. He didn’t want to watch his children die. “No. Your DNA is changed forever. It will be passed on to your children and they will have extended lives also.” Valor turned off the water and dried Caden off when they both got out of the bath. “Do you not want to have children?” The hurt in Valor’s eyes was his undoing. Truth was Caden always knew he liked men so it never occurred to him that he might have kids of his own. He felt the pull of the moon goddess as he looked into his lover’s eyes. “Yes, Valor I would be happy to have children with you. But let’s wait a while before we add to our family.” Valor smiled. “But not too much. I’ve waited two thousand years to have a family of my own and I’m not getting any younger.” Caden placed a kiss on his lover’s cheek. “I’ll keep that in mind.” Caden snatched the towel from Valor and tossed it over the vampire’s head. “First one in bed gets to be the top.” He shouted rushing past his lover. He hit the mattress still laughing as Valor sauntered out of the bathroom wearing nothing but a towel around his neck. “You are a sneaky little cheater.” “Yep. But tonight I’m a sneaky little cheater top.” Valor gave him a sexy smile. “So you are, my mate. So you are.”
