Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series
Prologue “We were lucky that diner was open or else we would have spent another night hungry,” Melina said as she crept down the alley, taking a shortcut to her home. With the imposed curfew at night, she took a great risk, but going now was still safer than venturing out in the daytime. Despair threatened to overwhelm her, but she tamped the feeling down. Nothing would be gained if she lost control of her emotions. “I wish everything was back to normal, Mel. Why did this have to happen now?” Adam asked around a mouthful of hamburger. “We all knew the apocalypse would happen sooner or later. We just thought it would be much later. We need to stick together. Those monsters roaming the streets are looking for humans. It scares the living daylights out of me when you go off on your own. If they were to capture you…” Melina’s whisper drifted off, and then she tried to shrug the idea away. “We’ve seen what happens to people they capture.” She forced the words out, and with it came the nightmarish vision of the past few months. Melina shivered against the terror of losing her best friend. Beth Williams was one of the first people she and Adam had seen beheaded, because she refused to take the mark of the beast. Hidden in an alcove with her brother, Melina witnessed the barbarian act as her heart beat furiously with fear. She would always remember the terror mixed with resolve in Beth’s eyes, and how they glazed over, sightless and blank

Jade James when death claimed her body. Melina admired the stand Beth took for what she believed in, but her violent death also spurred Melina and Adam to run for their lives. “Don’t worry, sis. I’ll be fine. They can’t catch what they can’t find. The boys and I are going out again tonight. We’ll watch each other’s back,” Adam replied, tossing the wrapper on a trash bin, overflowing with smelly garbage. He reached inside the bag and grabbed another burger as if he was unaffected by the disgusting smells in the air. Melina’s stomach rebelled at the odor of waste along with the demonic slime on the asphalt. The demons’ warts constantly oozed a gross glop of gunk that always left a trail in their wake. She heaved at the sight, her stomach threatening to erupt what little food she had in her system. Melina swallowed tightly. “I don’t think that’s such a great...” Melina’s words died in her throat as she stood frozen in shock and fear. Her thoughts scattered. Adam bumped into her. His muffled, “Ooof,” snapped her out of her paralysis. Melina yanked Adam by the shoulder, shoving him down as they scrambled to hide beneath a large bush. Her brother peered around her, and understanding dawned in his eyes. Four demonic spawns were in front of their home, wielding large metal swords. The tallest one seemed to be their leader and, with a kick to the front door, the ugly monsters entered their home. Anger burned inside of her as Melina fought the urge to run to them, and strike the demons down for making life on earth a living hell. But she wasn’t stupid enough to think that she alone could take down those things. She turned, clutching Adam’s hand tightly and fled down a narrow road, before heading back to the obscurity of the city’s shadows. They needed to find a new place to stay. It was going to be a very long night.

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series
Chapter One 3 Months Later Earth wasn’t what it used to be. The demons, released from their hellish prison, now roamed freely upon the world, wreaking havoc and spreading destruction. A blanket of depression covered the planet, ensuring certain death to those that did not have faith in the Higher Power above. Rafe Santos watched silently as he walked the streets, glass crunching under his booted feet, the smell of rotten garbage and burning debris hitting his nostrils. His gut tightened at the unbearable stench. Noxious fumes mingled with the odors of waste, nearly clouding his senses. His heart broke at the sight of humans walking in dazed, zombie‐ like oppression, while more bodies lay scattered on the sidewalks. Humans, once so alive, now roamed the earth like the soulless undead. Rafe glanced at the sky, not surprised to see a colorless space that no longer held the sun, stars, or clouds. The sun hadn’t bestowed its bright essence on the planet in over a year. The moon offered the only source of light, shining its brightest in what used to be daylight hours. But the days were shortened to sixteen instead of twenty‐four. There were no more seasons. Mankind now lived in a never‐ending summer of heat and humidity. Grateful that his skin adapted to whatever climate he entered, Rafe stared at a dazed man, slowly walking by him, sweat pouring down his flesh like buckets of water. And still the man didn’t know what
6
Jade James awaited him. The humidity here was far more pleasurable than the lake of fire. The apocalypse was in full force, and evil reined in every corner of the earth. Humans possessed by that evil and marked by the beast wielded authority over other holdouts, promising death to any who refused to take the mark. And still, there were those that preferred death to hell, knowing that taking the mark meant eternal torture of their souls. Rafe took everything in and wondered why people still doubted the existence of a heaven and hell. Daily battles were waged for the souls of innocents. And still people were blind to the obvious. While demon possession wasn’t an easy thing to do when the beasts remained locked in their prison, it was now an uncomplicated task to just leap into the souls of the doubtful. Rescuing them had to come from both the archangel and the unmarked one. If that chosen one had doubt about who he or she should accept, the demon could then take the advantage and forge its way into the chosen’s heart. The demon would feed on that doubt until guilt grew and turned the person’s life into such a bleak existence, a soul lost forever. Since the apocalypse, the Higher Power picked his angels to brave hell on earth to rescue the chosen ones. No one questioned the way God worked. Tonight, Rafe got his assignment. But he also got a surprise, the revelation that he would find his mate on earth. Rafe didn’t know how to feel about that. Angels have always known of their purpose. Their job since creation was to protect the humans, using various powers and strengths God had given them. Rafe excelled at the job and was thoroughly humbled at having such an honorable task placed on his shoulders. Rafe assumed he was destined to be alone, not because he couldn’t find anyone, but more because of choice. He had fought side by side with some of the best archangels, and even thought he had found love at one point. Emma Sacred was one of the best angelic warriors, one of the reasons why Rafe admired her so much. They got along in battle, and the attraction they experienced encouraged them to seek the next step in their relationship.
7
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series Apparently the hand that wielded fate didn’t agree. Emma became one of the fallen angels deceived by Damien. Thrown out of heaven for believing in his lies, Emma now roamed the world, causing destruction along with Satan and his minions. Rafe prided himself on never making mistakes, so Emma’s deception caused a deep burning sensation in his gut. Hurt. Disappointment. Loss. Yet, he wasn’t surprised by his reaction. He despised nothing more than deception. Since then, he purposely stayed away from all females, and instead threw himself into every task that came his way. When he did go to battle and needed someone there with him, he always requested a male, deliberately avoiding contact with another woman. Avoiding the possibility of a painful experience, which didn’t need repeating. He knew the Higher Power saw right through him. Rafe was grateful that it had never been brought up in conversation. He considered it a blessing that his Lord allowed him this concession for so long. His mind flitted back to an hour ago when God revealed to him his ultimate destiny. “Everyone is created for a purpose, Rafe. You have done your job well, but it is time for you to leave heaven and seek your destiny. The past will stay buried. Remember everything happens for a reason. You are to find your wife and convince her to join forces with us against the evil plaguing earth. Her name is Melina Soar and her soul is pure, Rafe, but her life is in danger. Find her and convince her before it is too late.” Rafe walked carefully, aware of the demonic slime clinging onto the brick walls and ground, while his thoughts remained on the conversation he had with his Father at the same time. Rafe knelt before the Father, showing him the respect due him. Temporarily speechless that he was chosen for this life‐altering mission, Rafe quoted the sacred passage that would explain his feelings thoroughly. “Worthy are you, my creator, to receive the glory, the honor, and the power, for you created all things, and because of your desire they existed, and were created! I will do as you say, Father.” “Look at me, my son,” the Lord exclaimed in his thunderous voice. Rafe jerked his head up and beheld the wondrous eyes of his Lord. “You will succeed. It
8
Jade James is written in the scriptures that I am coming soon, but it is your job to make sure Satan and his minions do not get to the chosen ones. Deaths and plague surround earth. Stay strong in your faith. You will live amongst the humans, but I will leave the powers bestowed upon you since your creation. You know Melina is yours, so you must never cease guarding her.” Rafe adjusted his long, white coat, hiding the golden sword beneath it as he recalled his Lord’s words. Stay strong in your faith. He supposed everyone created by the Lord would have his ultimate belief tested. Rafe had no doubts. He trusted and believed in him, but he instinctively knew that convincing Melina Soar to do so wasn’t going to be easy. And convincing her that they were destined to be together would certainly be more difficult. A test handed to you by the Creator was never an easy one, but always a life changing one. Living on earth didn’t bother him. Rafe knew the apocalypse wasn’t going to last forever, which meant the ruined planet would go through a great change, once the destruction was over. “Oh, God. Someone help me!” Rafe tensed, his mind shifting into battle mode. Those words—that voice—made him instinctively remove his golden sword and race down the street. Turning the corner, Rafe saw two demons holding a woman, each of their sharp claws clutching an arm. Rafe’s gut clenched at the sight as he silently wondered why she wasn’t indoors at this time of the night. He held his sword raised high, ready to swing. Everyone stilled. The stench of the night weighed as heavy and thick as a sheet of fog. All Rafe could hear were the rapid breaths coming from the woman. Frightened crystalline blue eyes rounded in shock, staring at him warily. Rafe smiled, already knowing who she was. God has a way of showing us our paths, he thought. Sometimes placing us right in front of our destinies. Silence stretched while time stood still, and a visible spark of fire flew between them, igniting a longing in the pit of his stomach. Her eyes
9
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series rounded in shock, as surprised as he was at the intensity of the energy flowing back and forth between them. Rafe willed the reaction to disappear. They had plenty of time to get to know each other and the passion that lay beneath. For now, however, he must concentrate on the monsters holding his eternal mate. His eyes traced the spawns clutching her and, in that instant, Rafe felt something he had never felt before. Anger. He struggled to overcome it and face the task at hand. He had never felt such a strong emotion when going into battle. He knew the outcome of the fight would be his victory. And yet, the fury he felt at the demons clutching his soon‐to‐be wife stunned him. He tamped down the need to rush the creatures through with his sword. Assessing the situation was always top priority. Moving in for the kill came in second. The night did nothing to cover the hideousness of the creatures. The demon to her right had long, black, straggly hair, glowing red eyes, and piercing talons that dug into her arm. Its skin was encased in warts and the areas that weren’t covered by the bumps were scarred with hard tissue. The one to her left watched him silently and looked just as repulsive as his counterpart. Melina stared at him, rapidly blinking. Rafe knew what she saw...what she was probably thinking. Dressed in a white coat, pants, and boots to match, Rafe was a sight to behold. He looked every bit like the archangel he was. And the glowing gold sword only emphasized the image he wanted to present. An image of good arriving when others fought to believe there was still hope. The foul beasts eyed him with such hatred. Rafe faced their hostility, while he hid his own emotions behind a stoic veneer. “This isn’t your fight, angel,” one of the demons spewed. His foul breath caused Melina to cough, and she turned her face away from him, continuing her struggle. “That’s where your wrong, demon. This is my fight in every way possible. Let her go, and your death will be a quick one.” “Fuck you,” the demon yelled. “You take one more step in this direction, and I will break her neck. Back off now, puppet, and I will let
10
Jade James you live long enough to watch while I take my pleasure in defiling her body.” “Do you know who you’re talking to? I come in the name of the King,” proclaimed Rafe in a loud voice. “And you’ve had your final chance, demon.” With the power that was bestowed him, Rafe leaped into the air too fast for the demons to react. He swung his sword at the monster’s neck. The sound of bone crunching testified to the beheading of the monster in mere seconds. Its counterpart screeched as he threw Melina in front of him, using her as a shield. “Fucking angel,” the surviving demon shrieked. “Stay back or I’ll snap her head off.” “You don’t have too many options here,” Rafe growled heatedly, the adrenaline racing through his body. “Let her go, and perhaps I won’t choose to make your death a slow one.” Just as Rafe issued his threat, Melina’s body went slack, forcing the demon to lose his grip as she dropped and rolled away. Rafe took the opportunity she provided, and ran with lightning speed, piercing the demons black heart. “Fuck!” the demon screamed as Rafe removed the sword slowly, taking delight in the sight of the beast’s heart on the tip of his golden blade. Within seconds, the heart disintegrated, and the demon’s body followed, bursting into flames. Rafe sheathed his sword, walking over to Melina who still lay sprawled on the ground, with a surprised look etched on her beautiful face. Rafe bent, taking her by the shoulders, hauling her up and against his body. “Are you okay?” he asked, pleasantly surprised at the way her luscious form fit against his. He released her shoulders, only to wrap an arm around her waist, fitting her even closer to him. He plunged his other hand into her hair, forcing her to stare at him. He could feel her heart beating rapidly against his, and was unsure if her rapid pulse was caused by nervousness or fear of him. Regardless, Rafe couldn’t separate himself from her just yet.
11
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series Now that he was face to face with his mate, and the immediate danger averted, Rafe took his time to explore her extraordinary features. Waist‐length hair the color of a sunset and crystal‐like blue eyes, shaped like a feline’s, hinted of her mixed race. Her mouth was slightly parted, the bottom lip fuller than the top. Her nose had a cute bend, a small imperfection that only added to her delightful features. Dressed in a tan shorts and a white t‐shirt, she was perhaps the most beautiful human he’d ever seen. No one had ever made him lose control like she did. He was tempted to run his hands over her body, to feel the voluptuous curves he knew were hidden underneath the clothing. Her light lilac scent flew to his head, making him hunger for more of her. Rafe tightened his hold on her. Soft was one of the words he would use to describe her. Her skin radiated a healthy smooth glow, almost like silk. She was how he envisioned all women should be, silky soft and rounded. Through his peripheral vision, Rafe could see a few of the zombies walking by with sluggish steps. He paid the sickly humans no heed. None of that affected the instant attraction to the woman in his arms, a strong pull racing through him. He could swear the air sizzled with a sexual aura surrounding them. Rafe released her hair, and let his hand travel down to her neck as he took his time savoring her skin against his. He skimmed the top curve of her breasts then paused at her nipple. With his thumb, he flicked the hardened tip. Hot white sparks shot through him as Melina released a whimper in reaction to his touch, her eyes fiery with passionate arousal. “I asked if you are okay?” he said once more as he held her nipple between thumb and finger. He meant for the touch to awaken her from the web of desire that lingered around them. Instead, it fueled the fire already burning through his veins.

Chapter Two “Yes,” Melina whispered in hopes that this seraph who rescued her would continue to touch her and hold her close. The feelings he engendered were foreign, but that unfamiliarity did nothing to stop her from reacting so sexually to him. Melina felt her body soften against him, silently inviting the blond god‐like man to never let her go. Over six feet tall, he looked like a warrior from the medieval times. His long blond hair was bound at the nape of his neck with a thin golden thread. His tongue darted out, licking his full lips as his gaze locked with hers. Melina’s mouth watered at the intense look he gave her. He was too delicious, a forbidden treat she wanted to taste and savor. Erotic thoughts burned in her brain and, for a moment, she felt the reprimand of her mother from years before when she had caught her reading a romance novel. Her mother had ruled the home with strict, oppressive authority, wielding her power like a sharp sword. Melina shuddered, then forced the thought away. Her mother was dead, and she wasn’t one to dwell on the past. Concentrating on the exquisite male who held her, Melina stared into his piercing gaze, which ensnared her with its depth. His dazzling features blew her breath away. Could God have created someone so perfect? Oddly, the idea flitted through her brain. She fought to sift through the many emotions running around her mind. Desire and the urge to be held forever like this were just a few. Strangely her body recognized this man, and she did nothing when he
13
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series pressed her against his body, bringing her closer to him. Why did his arms feel so right…so perfect? “You’re gorgeous,” he whispered against her ear. She could feel his erection pressed against the roundness of her stomach, pushing forward sensations she had never felt before. His hand continued to caress her nipple, which shot sparks of desire straight to her pussy. The hardened tip felt at home nestled between his fingers as he teased her, inflaming her need. A moan escaped her lips, and Melina wished in that instant that all was well with the world and that she could enjoy infinity on a bed with her nameless savior. But all wasn’t well with the world. With a sigh of regret, Melina struggled to clear the cloud of desire in her brain. A hard thing to do when he pinched and pleased her nipple. The pressure was mind blowing. She could feel the wetness of arousal between her legs seep into her shorts. Still, she forced herself to step back from him. She felt one last tightening on her nipple before he released her. She breathed deeply, forcing herself to break free of the sexual web surrounding her. She was supposed to have been out looking for food, not clinging to a strange man, no matter how alluringly handsome he was. With her brother gone again, she had to eat. She hated that their survival depended solely on her. The apocalypse that had fallen on the earth was only three months old. The destruction hadn’t taken eons to occur, but had instead happen in the space of a few weeks. First came the disappearance of the sun. To everyone’s horror, the best of mankind’s scientists couldn’t explain the vanishing, or reverse it. But Melina knew where to look. The ancient scrolls dictated its disappearance as one of the first signs. So, the humans had to adapt quickly. During what some now called day, when the moon glowed its shiniest, the bravest or neediest of people would step out of their hiding places, taking a great chance despite the dangers, just to seek out food. Other, more cautious souls would wait until the cover of darkness. Either way, it was an extreme risk. Getting caught by the demonic hordes that now roamed the earth at will was the
14
Jade James last thing any free‐thinking human wanted. Most who ventured out were armed with various weapons, but in her rush for food and water, she had forgotten her own. The drought was the second sign. Since no rain had fallen in the past three months, water was a rare find. When Melina went out, it was always one of the first things she looked for. But then so did everyone else. Some humans would even kill for the precious commodity. Still none of that compared to the horrific locusts. The vile creatures had swarmed from the pit of the abyss to wreak havoc on everything and everyone. The shapes of the locusts resembled horses prepared for war. Oddly, they had long fine hair. Ironclad breastplates adorned their chests. But these monsters were powerful and vicious. Their scorpion‐like tail and lion‐like fangs would tear into humans carrying the mark of the beast. Melina had seen some humans try to seek death, but death wouldn’t come. It was a dreadful scene, like one straight out of a horror flick. The locusts were created with a purpose. To torment those who existed in evil. The monsters had been the last surprise to plague mankind, or so some of the humans thought. Melina knew otherwise. There was more to come. Earthquakes that would break the foundation of the earth apart, fire reigning down from the heavens, the trees would burn as well as the grass. Those were just a few of the seven seals, yet to be opened. Her faith was strong, but how long could she holdout? Could she survive on her faith alone? Other than her brother Adam, her faith was the only thing she had left to hold onto. Melina shivered, her mouth going dry at the thought of how close she came to losing her life. She wet her lips, hoping to ease her parched mouth and throat. “Who are you? Where did you come from?” she whispered as she struggled to maintain her composure. Melina took another step back, immediately finding it easier to think when there was more space between them. “My name is Rafe.” His voice surrounded and then melted into her like butter. How could a voice sound so silky smooth, and yet so intense? Instinctively, she knew he couldn’t be human. He may look human, but it was way more than that. Rafe was the epitome of how a perfect
15
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series male should look. With skin so flawless, he seemed to have a glow about him. Melina shook her head, hoping to chase the thought away. She had to concentrate on her next step, not let his appearance distract her. “Thank you for rescuing me.” “That was my pleasure, Melina.” She gasped. He knew her name. That wasn’t a good thing. Not these days. “How do you know my name?” “We need to talk. Where are you staying?” “I don’t know you. How can you expect me to tell you where I’m staying? For all I know, you could be in cahoots with one of those monsters,” she replied in disbelief, although she knew the words were a lie. Rafe stepped forward. Melina felt him again, like warmth seeping into her. She tensed and fought the need to step back from him. “Do not be foolish, woman. Do I look like any of those monsters?” he asked indignantly. “You may not look like them,” she said with a smirk before continuing, “but I’ve read Satan looks like a hunk, too.” “Melina, there are important things we need to discuss, and I would prefer not to do it here.” Rafe withdrew his sword once more, pointing it directly at a group of demons headed their way. Wasting no more time, Melina grabbed his arm, her tiny hand encircling his huge wrist. “This way!” She yanked him in the direction of her pickup truck, leading him down the street to a dark alley. She let go of Rafe’s wrist long enough to retrieve her keys from inside the front pocket of her shorts. Another couple seconds, and she had the door open and was sliding into the driver’s seat. Melina reached over and opened the passenger side. Rafe’s powerful form filled the space of the small, blue, Ford truck, making her uncomfortably aware of his presence. She slid even closer to the door on her side, started the engine quickly, and shifted into drive.
16
Jade James Melina glanced at the rearview mirror, worried that the beasts were somehow able to follow. She threw a quick sidelong look at Rafe. “Are they following us?” “I sense no danger.” She tried to ignore the horrific scenes they passed, but the effort proved fruitless. Her stomach revolted at the sight of animals feeding off of the dead bodies that were scattered along the streets. Melina’s heart broke in despair. No one else on the streets seemed affected by the wretchedness of life during the apocalypse. Humans were walking by aimlessly, the mark seared into their flesh. A mark that was permanent and, once taken, it meant the end. Melina vowed to herself that she would rather die a slow death than be eternally tortured. Why did the public have to listen to Damien Hellos’ lies? She had seen right through them. As president of the United Nations, he had made history by also quickly becoming the leader of the States. From such a supreme position of power, he could easily spew his lies and deceit to anyone who would listen to him. Once he was seated on the president’s chair, all who knew what good really meant saw him for what he was. But still, he led the world downhill at a rapid pace, right before hell’s gate opened, letting the demons into the world. At the time, Melina had been working as a paramedic, although it was a job she hadn’t enjoyed. Gunshot and knife wounds were a common thing in her field, but that didn’t mean she ever got used to the bloodshed. Melina hadn’t worked such a demanding job for money alone. With such hatred in the world, and things only getting worse day by day, she’d felt a lot of satisfaction at knowing she helped the injured and sick. Since the apocalypse, however, she’d been forced to focus on her own needs and that of her brother, two years her junior. Now she had to steal food and necessities. It was a harrowing mission each time one of them went out and a most humbling one. If caught, they had one of two choices. The mark or death. She glanced at her passenger, who peered out the windows like a silent guardian, and she wondered whether she was making a huge mistake in taking him to her place. He had saved her from that demonic attack, which earned him Good Samaritan points. But there was
17
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series something else—something deep inside that told her she should trust him. What did he need to talk to her about? How did he know her name, when she knew they’d never met? She hoped for Adam’s sake, and her own, that she wasn’t being foolish. Melina made a left turn, jerking the truck into the driveway of what looked like an abandoned home. The windows were cracked and covered with black sealant tape. The paint on the structure’s siding had peeled off so much that you could actually see the metal underneath. What was once a beautiful, well‐tended garden had grown into at least five feet of grass, weeds, and wild brush. The ramshackle dwelling served its purpose. Besides being abandoned, its dilapidated appearance was one of the reasons why Melina had chosen this place to live. She could hide her truck well enough where it wouldn’t be noticeable if demons or marked ones wandered by. She parked the truck behind the house and turned off the ignition. Melina opened the door. She didn’t wait to see if Rafe followed. Where else would he go? She unlocked the front door and pocketed the keys. As expected, Rafe stepped inside, his large form having a remarkable impact on the tiny space in the foyer. Melina reached for the lighter, and began lighting several candles in the vestibule. She led the way into the living room and lit the ones in there as well. This was her and Adam’s second home, if you could even call it a home. Adam. He’d left this morning without a word. Another disappearing act that put a strain on their relationship. Her brother was becoming more and more distant, which worried her greatly. She needed to check if he was back already. Melina left Rafe standing in the living room and knocked on the door of her brother’s room. “Adam, are you in here?” Seconds ticked by before Melina opened the door. Empty. The silent room gave her the shivers. Something was wrong. He should be back by now.
18
Jade James Adam had recently met a woman that made Melina’s stomach drop in fear at the sight of her. Warning bells would go off in her head every time she came near. There was something utterly amiss with the way she clung to Adam desperately, after knowing him for such a short time. Was he with her now? The signs were there. She was losing her brother to the hell that struck earth, and somehow that abominable woman had a hand in it. Melina felt helpless. There had to be some way she could save him, before he doomed himself to the lake of fire. But Melina couldn’t think about that now. Not when she had to deal with Rafe. She closed the door and returned to the living room. Rafe stood silently watching her. She fought a sudden, ridiculous feeling of vulnerability. All of her life, she had been told to live a certain way. Melina had always been the strong one. The responsible one. For once, she wondered, what would it feel like to leave everything in Rafe’s hands? To trust that someone else could take care of her? Melina grimaced at the thought and shook it off. She needed to take care of Adam and thinking silly thoughts wasn’t going to do it. “Take a seat, Rafe. Now that you know where I live, you can begin by telling me how you know my name?”

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series
Chapter Three Rafe stared at her, immovable at the pain that flitted through her eyes. She was strong. He had witnessed her inner‐strength when he first saw her in the demons’ grasps, but just now, for a fleeting second, hurt crossed her gaze. Rafe knew she’d seen too much devastation in her short life. He didn’t know the details, yet, but he was intent on finding out. Ever since he had received details of his fate, Rafe had not questioned why he was chosen. He knew his assignment and took it with a grain of salt, but never did he expect to feel such intense heat and fire curling inside him at the mere sight of her. It was as if she’d been created exclusively for him, his perfect equal, his mate and lover for eternity. Even by candlelight, Rafe could see her clear as day. Her eyes narrowed as she continued to regard him warily. She sat on the end of a black sofa. Rafe removed his sword, laying it on the low table in front of the sofa and sat across from her. “Your initial reaction to what I’m about to say will, I’m certain, be doubt. But keep in mind the paranormal destruction that plagues the earth.” He paused. When she nodded, somewhat hesitantly, he got straight to the point and stated proudly, “I am one of God’s archangels.” Melina gasped, her eyes rounding in shock. Rafe continued, perfectly content with getting everything out into the open. Talking in circles wouldn’t help matters anyway. “Destiny is a beautiful thing, when it is revealed to you under the right circumstances. Mine was revealed to me today, Melina. My King has blessed me with the knowledge that I was to come down to earth and find the one destined to
20
Jade James be my wife. I am to convince her to join forces with us against the apocalyptic forces on earth.” “Are you serious?” she asked, her voice laced with disbelief. “You can’t be serious!” “I’m quite serious. You are one of the chosen ones, Melina. Your soul is pure. Satan and his minions will not win, but you are required to fight by my side. I am here to prove to you that we were always meant to be.” Melina jumped from the sofa as she began pacing back and forth. Nervousness had her wanting to flee from him, but where would she go? He had already proven his worthiness by saving her from those monsters. She had to think this through logically. At first glance, Melina had known deep down inside that Rafe wasn’t human. In a world where seeing evil creatures roam the streets on a daily basis, she had no problem believing in the paranormal. She could even understand the concept of joining him in his fight against evil. Fighting was better than the alternative. Besides, she couldn’t just sit all day and do nothing. But his wife? How could he even suggest such a thing? She had always dreamed she would marry someone she loved. They didn’t even know each other. A marriage couldn’t be based on instant sexual attraction. It would be a ludicrous thing to do, and something that would be doomed to fail. “You’re crazy,” she whispered, disbelief still racing through her. “I assure you, I am anything but crazy,” Rafe replied calmly. “I can accept the fact that you’re an angel. Hell, look what’s walking around on earth. I can even accept the idea that I’m supposed to fight on your side. But the nonsense of me being your wife, is something I won’t believe. How can you say we are destined to be? We don’t even know each other.” Rafe stood and stalked over to her, forcing her to take a step back until the living room wall stopped her retreat. “There is no way to fight destiny. What is foretold will come to pass. You will get used to it.” Melina stiffened—tense at the overbearing attitude he exuded. “Like I said, numbers one and two, I can accept with some discussion, but
21
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series I will never marry someone I don’t love, much less someone I don’t even know.” “There are things in life we must accept, whether we want to or not. I was sent here for a purpose, Melina, and I will do whatever it takes to achieve it with great success,” Rafe stated, taking the last step toward her. There wasn’t any space separating them now, and Melina could feel his ultra‐hot presence engulfing her. It was as if he was seducing her with his very being. She felt her pussy react to him, his words and his body. “Stop that,” she hissed, annoyed that she even responded to him. “Stop what, Melina? Stop trying to convince you that there’s something between us that’s worth fighting for?” His voice was an erotic whisper, flowing over her like melted butter. “Stop trying to seduce me. This will not work on sex alone,” she moaned, already enflamed by him. “You can’t seduce the unwilling, Melina. It will always be your choice,” he replied, as he bent and took her mouth in an all‐consuming kiss. He swiped his tongue over her lips, before entering her mouth and engaging her tongue in play. She opened up to him, and he licked at the inside of her mouth. Melina was spellbound, totally enraptured by the taste of him. Clean and manly, his spicy essence drove her insane. It was as if his very hormones were pouring into her, trapping her in the depths of him. She felt him lick the recesses of her mouth, and swipe her teeth before tangling his tongue with hers once more. She moaned when he took his time sucking her, mimicking the way she wanted him to suck her pussy. The idea only served to heighten her arousal as she pressed against him. His cock felt huge pressed against her belly, and Melina couldn’t help but tighten herself against him, holding the hard member trapped between them. She could feel him throb as her pussy creamed with want. She hadn’t ever been this close to a man before. Her life had been a large, complicated ball of pressure laid on her shoulders, so Melina hadn’t ever had the time to indulge herself with a man. She did, however, read
22
Jade James books and judging by his height and the feel of his cock pressed against her, Melina knew that he was big all over. God, how she wanted to strip her clothes and have him make love to her, yet the thought also came as a complete surprise. The idea was as foreign to her as it was delicious. If he was human, maybe she would have a better chance of fighting off the attraction she felt for him, but with his warm skin touching hers, his spicy scent reaching her nostrils, and her pussy creaming in delicious surrender, she gave up any hope of denying what now seemed all but inevitable. She lost herself in him, and began to savor the sexual needs he brought out of her. Melina moaned as his hands traveled under her shirt, and he began to play with her nipples, lightly pinching the tips. Her whole being centered on the titillating streaks that traveled from her chest to her pussy. Never before had she felt anything like this. Her hands flew to his waist and burrowed underneath his shirt. Her fingers skimmed the smooth skin beneath, and his muscles tightened in response. His skin was hot, and she reveled in their close physical contact. A foggy cloud of desire overrode all of her senses. She distantly heard a sudden loud noise, but was too wrapped up in the new sensation he’d aroused in her to pay it much mind. Rafe grabbed her wrists, stilling her movements. It was her only clue that something was wrong. Melina moaned as Rafe kissed her thoroughly, before letting her go. “What the fuck is going on here?” Adam’s angry voice had her body tensing in dismay, then mentally kicking herself for not realizing fast enough that he’d come in. Melina faced her brother. His mouth was tense, his fists rigid at his sides as he continued to glare at her. Although younger than she, Adam still felt the need to protect her. Tall for his age, he was lanky in form, and it seemed as if he still needed to fill out. Fury burned in her when she saw who stood next to her brother. Emma was a beautiful woman, with straight, shoulder‐length black hair, but her looks seemed to only heighten the coldness in her onyx colored

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series eyes. She might look like a model, standing beside Adam in a black cat suit and knee high boots, but Adam seemed blind to the aura of evilness surrounding Emma. This was the fifth time she’d seen Emma with Adam in a week. Her brother seemed to be enamored with her, but Melina wasn’t fooled. She didn’t trust Emma one bit. The woman clung to her brother like a vine, watching and dictating his every move. Earlier, Melina had even found marijuana in Adam’s bedroom, but when she confronted him about it, he denied it was his. Emma raked her with a vicious glance before turning her attention to Rafe. He tensed beside Melina and threw an arm over her shoulders in what she thought was a protective gesture. Emma continued to stare at Rafe malevolently, but with a familiarity that disturbed Melina. She didn’t know how she knew that but, in that instant, she realized two things. Emma knew who Rafe was—what Rafe was—and she was intent on wreaking destruction in their lives.

Chapter Four Rafe heard the door slam shut, but it didn’t deter him from concentrating on Melina, and loving the way her tongue battled with his. She was so responsive too his touch, convincing him even more that this union would be no hardship. He continued to kiss her, not at all disturbed by the couple staring at them. His inner‐senses reached out to study the human and fallen one who stood in Melina’s home. Even before he faced the couple, he knew who they were. Rafe lapped at her lips once more, deeply disappointed to be breaking off the kiss. He then turned to face the couple. Adam stood before him, tense with anger, yet unmoving, so he took his time studying Melina’s brother. He looked so much like her. The same crystal blue eyes, slanted like a feline’s, and the russet colored hair. But instead of a welcoming smile, Adam’s lips pressed into a thin line. Rafe needed more than just a physical description, so without hesitation, he touched his mind to Adam’s as he continued to hug Melina to him with one arm. Rafe scanned his mind in seconds, instantly knowing to what depths evil held him. His soul was on its way to being engulfed by a cloud so black, it could only be born of evil. The fallen angel next to Adam knew what she was doing. His past lover stood before him with a sneer marring her lips. Emma had done more than ply Adam with alcohol and drugs. She had taken her time, molding a piece of herself into Adam’s heart, ensuring she was the only
25
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series one he would follow. Rafe didn’t need to reach into Emma’s mind to know whom she served. Rafe stood his ground a good distance away from the demon and her puppet. “Rafe,” Emma purred, running a black fingernail along the front of Adam’s shirt. “It’s been a long time. Yet, I have waited for this day with great anticipation. Shall we celebrate our reunion now? Have you seen the error in not joining with me?” “Joining with you was never an option. I would have been happy not ever seeing you again.” “I have always despised the way you thought you were too good for the rest of us. Time hasn’t improved your demeanor,” Emma replied. “You were created with love, but you allow your mind to be filled with such poison. Your actions only prove how volatile you are. What is it that you want with him?” Rafe asked, tilting his head toward Adam. “Straight to the point as always. I see no harm in answering your question.” She gave a nonchalant shrug. “For all intents and purposes, I hooked up with him to have a little fun. But now that I know his dear sister is connected to you in someway, I think I’ll stay for a while.” Sarcasm laced her voice before she turned Adam’s head and placed an open‐mouthed kiss to his lips. She then blew a challenging kiss in Rafe’s direction, still clutching at Adam far too desperately. Rafe stared at her black eyes, seeing the depths of her hatred clearly in them. “I see you for what you are, Emma, and I will only warn you once. Remove the dark strings you have wound around his heart and leave. Or I will have no compunction in cutting your black heart out of your chest.” Emma’s sneer wavered, but only for a second. “You are on earth now, without any of your angels to back you up. Do you really think you have a chance against us?” “Do you really want to test me, Emma?” Rafe said through clenched teeth. He didn’t want to fight with her here. Not in such a small place, but he would have no choice, if she refused to back down.

Jade James Disgust filled him at the thought of Melina’s brother taken in by someone who lived right at the gates of hell, but he was saddened for Emma and everything she lost with that one fatal mistake. Rafe shrugged the feelings off. He couldn’t dwell on the past. Emma was beyond saving. Adam wasn’t. “What do you want?” Melina asked, fury filling her voice. Rafe’s protective instincts stirred within him as she tried to shrug his arm off and face Emma. He allowed her to think she had succeeded in taking a step away from him, before maneuvering his arm around her waist, and hauling her against him once more. “Be careful. She is not what she seems,” Rafe whispered against her ear. He felt her tense as her nails bit into his arm in retaliation for stopping her, but Melina made no more moves to get close to Emma or her brother. Melina was livid. Her brother stood next to Emma, docile, his head bent down to her shoulder as if waiting for her every command. The urge to go over there and slap that arrogant smirk off the bitch’s face was strong, but the tight hold Rafe had around her waist ensured that she wasn’t going anywhere. Be careful. She is not what she seems. Rafe’s words could have meant anything, but she heard the whispered urgency in his tones. She stopped struggling against him and began to breathe deeply, hoping it would calm her. Time seemed to slow as she felt Rafe’s heat pour into her, igniting her blood. Where before his essence made her want to fuck him, now the heat served to calm and reassure her of his presence and support. “Now, now Melina. It wouldn’t be fun if I revealed everything to you so soon, but I will let you in on a little secret.” Emma’s smirk changed to a vindictive grin. “Rafe is an animal in bed.” Melina narrowed her eyes in annoyance. So she had been right in her assumption. Emma and Rafe had a past. Her body tightened in angry jealousy at Emma’s declaration. Emma was an annoying little bug, and she wanted to squash her desperately. “How would you know?” “Ask…” “The past shall remain buried where it belongs,” Rafe replied, cutting off Emma’s response. Melina heard the irritation in his voice and, for a moment, she wondered if Emma’s words were true.
27
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series “As I was saying, Rafe and I have a long history together. He was such a passionate lover. Too bad he broke it off so soon.” “At least he had the sense to do it before his dick fell off,” Melina bit out. “Why you fucking little bitch. You have absolutely no idea who you’re messing with, do you?” Red flames erupted in Emma’s eyes. She shrugged Adam off her shoulder, and took an aggressive step forward. Emma’s sudden transformation shouldn’t have surprised Melina, but it did. The evil she’d felt pouring out of Emma in waves should’ve been an easy indicator of the monster lying beneath. But what exactly was she? She didn’t look like any of the demons roaming the earth, and yet Melina couldn’t deny that she was some sort of paranormal creature. Melina should have been afraid, but she was far too angry. Her hands fisted as her body tensed, making ready for the venomous snake headed her way. “I know exactly who it is I’m messing with,” she lied. “You’re nothing but a trailer park whore.” Rafe’s hand flew to his sword. Emma halted her steps, her gaze shifting to Rafe’s weapon. “Don’t speak to her that way, sis. She’s the woman I love!” “Snap out of it, Adam. Look at her. She isn’t even human. She’s not interested in your love. She wants your soul.” “By the way things looked when I came in, you have no right to judge anybody I’m with. I’m gone for two days and come back to see you making out with a total stranger. Care to answer that one, Mel?” “You want formal introductions?” Melina replied sarcastically. “Then by all means. Rafe this is my little brother, Adam. Adam, this is Rafe.” “Under the circumstances, I don’t think introductions are needed,” Rafe replied, his hand still poised above the weapon, his gaze locked on Emma. “Who the hell is this guy, Mel? And since when do you take orders from someone you don’t know?” Adam asked, approaching her. Melina’s heart softened at the bedraggled sight her brother presented. “I’m not taking orders from anyone. Please, sit down, so I can
28
Jade James discuss this calmly with you. There are things happening here that you’re not aware of.” “Bitch, you start messing in things you have no business in, and everything you hold dear will be lost to you.” Emma sidled up to Adam, preventing him from coming any closer. “Adam is staying by my side.” “You conniving little witch. I’m already losing him to you, aren’t I?” “You aren’t going to win,” Emma said, her loud voice like a shriek filling the room. “That’s enough!” Rafe pulled his sword from its sheath. “Leave here. If you come back, I will have no choice but to remove you from the face of this Earth. Your evilness will not preside here.” Emma glared at Rafe, releasing a ball of fire from the palms of her hands. She played with the flaming orb, while her gaze met Melina’s, then Rafe’s. “I will leave here...for now. But I assure you, this is far from over. Come, Adam.” “No...” Melina began, disregarding her threat, although she knew deep down inside that Emma spoke the truth. This wasn’t going to be the last time they saw her. Adam ignored her plea as he turned away from her, following Emma like a puppy on a leash. “Adam, please don’t go.” Her throat closed up in fear of losing the only family she had left. She wouldn’t lose him. She’d find a way to fight, some way to break Emma’s hold on her brother. “I’ve finally found someone that loves me as I am, Mel. I’m not letting that go. Not even for you,” Adam replied as he grabbed Emma’s hand. It was still burning when Adam touched her skin. Melina gasped as she realized Adam didn’t feel or smell a thing even though she could smell the burning flesh from where she stood. Melina pleaded with Rafe. “Do something, please. She can’t take him.” His eyes held pained sympathy. “I can do nothing...yet. It is his choice. His free will.” The demon turned, throwing a smirk her way as they walked out the door.

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series “I’m losing him,” Melina whispered to Rafe. “And I don’t think there’s anything I can do about it.” “It’s not over. I did not see nor sense the mark on his skin. There’s still hope.” Rafe grabbed her shoulders and turned her to face him. “Have faith in yourself, and in us.” “How can we fight against that? What is she anyway? She doesn’t look like any of the monsters walking the streets.” “Emma was perhaps the most gracious angel guarding the gates of heaven. Until she fell for Damien’s deceiving lies. She was cast down to the lake of fire, forever banned from walking among the pure ones. She is an imp from hell. She has the looks of a human, but the depravity inside of her rivals the demons walking on earth.” “Is it true what she said? You were once with her?” Melina asked as she silently hoped he would deny the claim. “I’d never lie to you,” Rafe murmured as he hauled her against his body. “At one time, I had thought I found the woman I wanted. She killed whatever feelings I had for her when she chose to serve the bad instead of the good.” “Then how do you know that I’m supposed to be your mate…your wife? How do you know I’m not truly like her?” Butterflies danced in her stomach at the thought of being his for all eternity. She still struggled to accept the concept, but she couldn’t deny that the attraction between them was fierce. “Melina, I have been blessed in knowing what part of my future holds. I’ve never felt anything like this before, not with anyone. The way we feel about each other is something to build on. As I said before, I’ll never lie to you. I’ve made my objectives clear. You belong by my side as a fighter, wife, partner, and lover. And I have no intentions of ever letting you go.”

Chapter Five “Do you already know what’s going to happen to Adam?” Melina asked. She hated asking for fear of what his response would be, but if Rafe knew, then she couldn’t stop herself from wanting to know. “No. But that’s not a bad thing. Some things must play out for themselves without our knowledge,” Rafe replied stoically. His answer sent a tingling reaction through her. “Why does it feel like your leaving something out?” Though she had no proof that Rafe wasn’t telling her anything but the truth, something still felt off. “You know of all the reasons why I was sent here, but one,” he acknowledged slowly. She swallowed the dry lump in her throat, forcing herself to ask the obvious question. “What are you holding back from me?” “Your life is in danger, Melina. I don’t know how. I don’t know when. But what happened here today is just the beginning.” “You purposely withheld this from me?” Oddly, she felt a shiver of hurt run through her. “If I’ve caused you any pain by keeping this from you, then I’m sorry. But, yes I wasn’t planning on telling you until later. You had no reason to worry. I was sent here to protect you, and that means no harm will ever come to you.” “I don’t know what to believe anymore,” she whispered, fighting back the urge to cry. Damn, she hated crying. Her faith was her only source of redemption, but now she felt it teetering on the edge of doubt.

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series “Honey, please look at me.” Rafe grabbed her chin, forcing their gazes to unite. Melina sucked in an unsteady breath at the white glow beaming from his eyes, but it was more in surprise than fear. Once again, she felt his blistering heat enter her and threaten to consume her with its intensity. “You can trust me, always. Without a second thought, I would gladly lay my life on the line for you.” The words hit her profoundly at the same time her stomach tumbled in nervousness. The thought of his death made her shake with cold concern. Melina forced the uncomfortable thoughts from her mind. “Tell me more about where you came from, and what future lay ahead for Earth,” Melina said, attempting to change the disturbing subject of conversation as she sat beside Rafe. She reached for a bag of hamburgers that she had stolen hours before. Melina handed him a burger. Rafe took a bite of the cold food before beginning. He had said he had no secrets. Would he share with her everything about his past? “I come from the place where many souls venture after death takes them. You might know it as heaven. Those who have been true to themselves are allowed through the guardian’s gate. I have lived there since the beginning of mankind, and I’d thought that was where I would live always, until my destiny was revealed.” “How does it look….heaven I mean?” “Beautiful would be too inadequate to describe the rapturous feelings you get when you’re walking down streets of gold, or when you look at the humans walking amongst angelic hosts with no care in the world. Words can’t describe perfection. No diseases, no fights, no worries, no evil. It’s a world where you can walk about freely and not have to worry about someone mugging you. It’s a world where you can love, and not have to worry about the threat of sexual diseases.” “Unbelievable.” Melina tried to digest the information he was giving her. “It’s quite the opposite, Melina. It’s very believable and within your grasp, if you do just that…believe.” “You ask me for too much.”
32
Jade James “I ask you for nothing more than you’re capable of giving.” Rafe’s deep voice surrounded her. “Deep down inside, you know I speak of the truth.” “I trust you. I don’t know why or how that’s possible…but it’s there. I know you will keep me safe, but that’s as far as I’m willing to go right now.” “We’ll take baby steps, honey. I’m here by your side forever. You don’t have to give me your all now.” Rafe grabbed her around the waist and lifted her onto his lap. He would not let her sidestep the intense attraction that held them both spellbound. Melina moaned at the feel of his hard cock pressed between her backside and his stomach. She could feel her wetness moisten her panties. “What’s next?” She swiped a hand over her suddenly dry lips. The possessive way he was staring at her had her nervously trying to put some distance between them. Melina didn’t get too far before Rafe snaked his hand around her arm and held her on his lap. “For now, we spend the night here,” he growled before covering her lips with his, and plunging his tongue into her mouth. The taste of him went to her head like an aphrodisiac, his flavor exploding into her mouth, drugging and invading her senses. Rafe gave no quarter as he tangled his tongue with hers, tasting and licking every inch of her mouth. She couldn’t stop herself from moving her hands to his shoulders, sliding them up to his head, and running her fingers through his hair. Rafe traced her cheekbones with teasing fingertips while he his tongue dueled with hers. His hand flowed down to her chest and grasped her hardened nipple. It begged for his touch, and Rafe took his time, rolling the throbbing tip between his fingers. The kiss deepened more as they both ate at each other, starving for the taste of one another. She held her breath as Rafe maneuvered her so that she faced him, her legs straddling his thighs. Time was forgotten as their bodies meshed. The air around them thickened, turning fiercely hot, and Melina moaned, unable to deny the heat he created, which gave her a mating‐like fever. In the back of her mind, she knew that what was happening between them was happening too soon, but she was helpless to refuse him anything as her wanton body took over all of her thoughts.
33
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series A groan escaped him as his hands continued to roam her body. Melina ran her own hands under his shirt, taking pleasure in the hardness of his muscles and heated skin. His rigid, thick cock pressed between her legs, and Melina could feel her wetness seeping through her panties. Sensations enveloped her like fiery explosions going off. This man…no, this angel knew what buttons to press to make her forget her worries and concentrate on him. Her hands flitted along his pants’ waistband. She was desperate to see and feel his hard length pressed against her. Rafe pulled back from their kiss, his eyes glowing white. His voice lowered to a whisper. “Dip your hands in, Melina love, and tell me if you like what you feel.” She couldn’t resist the temptation his words stirred in her. Melina slipped her hands inside his pants and first felt the soft curls leading to his manhood. She ran her fingers through the smooth hair, causing him to groan, before reaching her goal and placing her hand around the width of his thick cock. Her hand tightened, but her fingers were unable to enclose him fully. Sweat dampened her skin as his body’s heat flowed through them. Melina watched Rafe lay his head against the sofa, his eyes closing. “Just hold me for now, love. Feel how much I want you?” Melina rubbed the smooth skin, gliding her hand up and down the hard cock, succumbing to an urgent need to be close to him. Her clit throbbed, her moist cream spilling from her, readying her body for what her soul craved. She moaned, tightening her hand on his cock, touching the wetness that seeped through his slit. “I need you, Melina. It’s become more than I…” He never finished the plea. Melina flinched as the front door burst open with a resounding crash. Rafe flipped her on her back, and covered himself quickly. In two seconds flat, he had her shielded in protection, and his sword ready in the palm of his hand. “You could have knocked,” Rafe stated, obviously annoyed. A black eyebrow arched in defiance as the stranger smirked before answering. “What fun would I have in knocking?”

Chapter Six Lust beat relentlessly on Rafe’s ability to think. A thick blanket of erotic heat and unfulfilled lust hung in the air as he barely managed to concentrate on the figure before him. A figure he never thought he’d see again. Rafe stared at the archangel who stood reverently before him. Gabriel matched him in height as well as skill in battle. He was the highest in lineage, more adept in the power bestowed upon him. Rafe sensed when Melina rose from the couch to stand beside him. His eyes narrowed in annoyance as Gabriel’s gaze traced Melina’s form. He didn’t stop to ponder why this feeling of irritation was new to him. Instead Rafe took a step toward Gabriel, attempting to shield her from his unnerving perusal. “What do you want?” Rafe asked as he pushed his sword in its sheath. “I was informed that you would need my assistance.” Gabriel arched his brow nonchalantly. “I wasn’t aware that I needed any help.” “It is not for us to decide if and when we need help, just as you are aware that we do not hold power over destinies. Many surprises lay in store for us my friend. Are you going to introduce me?” “This is Melina, my intended.” “Nice to meet you, Melina. My name is Gabriel. I’m a friend of Rafe’s.” Gabriel reached past him and grabbed her hand, placing a kiss on the back of it.
35
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series Jealousy. The word tasted as bitter as it sounded, and Rafe was shocked to feel it slithering through his system at the sight of Melina’s hand enclosed in Gabriel’s. He pushed the feeling down. Perhaps, he was more human than he realized. His intended, she thought. She should have challenged the way he introduced her, but Melina bit back her denial, knowing if she spoke it, they would just be lies. The attraction between them wasn’t ordinary. It was a rare powerful allure, and the intensity of it scared her on some levels. Even though she silently acknowledged her fear, Melina knew the attraction was worth exploring. She couldn’t help but stare at the massive man holding her hand, realizing that, like Rafe, he couldn’t possibly be human. She could feel Rafe tense beside her. “Nice to meet you,” Melina said, pulling her hand from his. “Do you bring any other news?” “What exactly is it that you seek?” Gabriel asked, shutting the door behind him. “My brother’s name is Adam. Have you learned anything about his future?” “I’m sorry. I have been told many things this eve, but your brother’s destiny wasn’t one of them.” Sadness shown in both his words and expression. “It was worth a try,” Melina muttered as she felt Rafe’s reassuring hand on her shoulder. She smiled at his silent offer of comfort, before she walked away from him. Worry filled her as she pulled back the curtains and stared at the darkening moon. Adam, have I lost you? She couldn’t help but worry. It was in her nature, and Melina wouldn’t be able to rest until she rescued her brother from that she‐devil’s grip. “We should try to get some rest,” she stated, knowing sleep would elude her tonight. “Will you be staying with us, Gabriel?” “For the time being.” “I doubt my brother will be coming back today, so you can stay in his room. I’ll show you the way.”
36
Jade James Rafe grabbed her arm before she entered the hallway. “We need to talk. I’ll show him to your brother’s room.” Melina nodded. There was still so much that needed to be said between them, so many questions she wanted to ask. She heard Rafe open the door to Adam’s room, and used the time to get cleaned up. The day had been a long one, and she felt grimy all over. She walked to the bathroom, closing the door behind her. She craved a nice bubble bath, and missed even the simplest of luxuries, like hot water. She was reduced to taking sponge baths from gallons of water that she and Adam stole. Tears pooled, threatening to emerge at all she had lost. Why now? The question came to mind, sudden and unwanted. She had no right to ask what couldn’t be answered. Everything was lost. She had built a comfortable life for her and Adam. She had supported both of them while he went to school. On weekends, she would visit her friends, and Adam would go hang out with his. But all of that was gone. History. A past missed but not forgotten. A knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. “I’ll be right out,” she yelled through the thick wooden barrier, immediately sensing Rafe on the other side of it. Quickly grabbing a cloth and washing up, Melina brushed out her hair and changed into a fresh pair of shorts and a T‐shirt. She opened the door and walked back to the living room, surprised to see Rafe shirtless, lounging on the sofa. She blushed, her gaze traveling to the hard plains of his hairless chest. Her palms itched with the urge to run her hand over his skin. “What is it you wanted to speak about?” Melina asked as she sat on another couch farthest from him. If she sat any closer, she would be tempted to continue discovering what lay beneath his clothes. The craving beat at her, making her blood boil. Instead, she retained her distance. Rafe lay back on the couch, watching Melina through a hooded gaze. Her tiny hands clenched into fists as she stared at him hungrily. He could sense the nervous energy coming from her, overlaid by the more sexual force seeping out.
37
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series His cock had remained a rigid throbbing pole since first setting eyes on her. He would have taken her earlier, if Gabriel hadn’t interrupted him. If he closed his eyes and replayed the scene in his head, Rafe was one hundred percent sure he would come from the thought of her tight heat clasping his cock. He would take his time savoring the silkiness…. Rafe jolted out of the sexual vision as he felt his pre‐cum slip from the tip of this penis. He needed to focus on her and their next step, but the overwhelming urge to taste her, to savor the sweet flavor of her pussy overrode anything else. He couldn’t explain the animalistic need leaping inside of him to sample her taste, and he wasn’t going to start analyzing it now. Not when his desire rose up to overwhelm everything. Rafe stood in one smooth motion, the coffee table in front of him providing no hindrance. Melina’s eyes rounded in shock as he knelt in front of her, his hands grabbing her knees and pushing them apart. “What are you doing?” Surprise was evident in her tone of voice as was her arousal, judging by how her nipples tightened through the fabric of her shirt. “I need to taste you, Melina. You think it is too soon for us to consummate what’s between us, but honey, let me appease my hunger, if only temporarily.” He didn’t wait for a response as he grasped the waistband of her shorts and tugged. Her desire‐filled gaze said it all, and her body lifted of its own accord as Rafe succeeded in removing her shorts. He groaned at the sight of her not wearing any underwear. Could anything be sexier, he thought as he continued to stare at her pale pink flesh. “What is this between us?” she whispered, her head falling back as she moaned. She sounded confused, but helpless in the grips of what was happening between them. Rafe was speechless, and he refused to come up with an explanation for the explosive attraction. What’s meant to be will be. Nothing on earth could compare to the loveliness spread out before him like a feast. Soft, wet, and pink, her sex had his mouth watering for a taste of her, and her scent made his cock ache to feel her surrounding him.

Jade James Rafe reached out, tracing her pussy lips with his finger. Awed by the feel of her silky wet skin, he took his time, and then he pushed the digit inside. She clenched his finger, whimpering as a rush of cream dampened his hand. He felt the burning heat of her flesh race through him, and it took all of his willpower not to bury his throbbing erection into her. He removed his finger slowly, her tight muscles working to keep him in. From that sensation alone, Rafe knew she had never known another man, and the knowledge made him want to scream for joy. A very barbaric thought, but that didn’t stop him from being happy. He put his hands underneath her thighs, pulling her to the corner of the sofa, and then used his shoulders as a wedge to hold her open as wide as possible. “I wish you could feel the desire I have burning inside me for you. Do you know how beautiful you are, Melina? So pink and wet just for me. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect a treasure like you to be given to me. I shall give thanks for every day you are in my life.” Melina shivered and moaned, thrusting her hands into his hair as he kissed the soft skin between her thighs. Her scent went straight to his head like the sweetest fragrance of flowers. She tasted of honey, and Rafe couldn’t stop himself from dipping his tongue inside, and drinking up all of her cream. He took her clit between his lips and sucked the throbbing bud. Melina arched as she screamed out his name, her body shuddering from the climax racing through her. Rafe grabbed her ass and continued his oral assault, feasting on everything she had to give. He could feel his cock swelling and his balls tightening, which made him growl with hunger, but Rafe concentrated on making this moment a gift meant solely for her. After pleasuring her for several long minutes, Rafe released her and rose from between her legs. She had the look of a satisfied woman as she continued to lounge on the sofa, darting her gaze from his erection to his face. “Where’s your bedroom?” He licked the remaining essence from his lips. His desire for her remained unquenched. Her tongue peeked out, swiping her bottom lip, and Rafe found himself clenching his hands, once again struggling to hold back the beastly need to rut like an animal into her.

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series “The door to the right of Adam’s room,” she replied softly. Rafe bent, picking her up, and then walked to the door she indicated. Her arms reached around his neck as her head lay against his shoulder. Rafe breathed in her scent, which lingered in her hair, the fragrance of lilacs that mixed with her own unique essence. He stepped into the room and kicked the door shut. Rafe walked to the bed and laid Melina down. Moving to the other side, he removed his boots and shirt, but never turned his gaze from hers. She looked so sexy, peeking at him as she raised herself on her elbows. Her body was still relaxed from the orgasm, and Rafe doubted Melina understood the vision she presented with her lower body naked and her nipples peaking through the cotton fabric. Her expression was pure satisfaction with a hint of surprise. Rafe fought the need to join her on the bed and take her completely. She needed her rest and if he took her now, they would be up all night. “What about yourself?” she asked softly, indicating the subject she was speaking of with a nod of her head and a passing glance over his cock, which still strained uncomfortably against his pants. He wanted nothing more than to take her. To prove to her that they had something powerful to build on. But if she was going to start trusting him, Rafe was going to have to make sacrifices. Melina yawned soundlessly as her eyelids drooped towards sleep, and then glanced at him with a blush of embarrassment. He smiled. “I’ll be fine. Sleep, Melina. We have all the time in the world.” He lay beside her, gathered her into his arms, and tried to ignore the urgings of his cock that was hard as steel. Melina rose up, reached over, and grabbed the sheets covering them both. She snuggled against him, laying her head on his chest, and clasping an arm around his waist. He must have been up another hour, relishing the way she held him, before surrendering to sleep.

Chapter Seven Spots of sunlight gleamed through the holes of the black sealant that covered the window, awakening Rafe from his sleep and setting the wheels of his mind in motion. He had fallen into a deep slumber with his arms wrapped around the woman he craved. His erection hadn’t dwindled in the least, forcing the sheet to tent, embarrassingly obvious proof of the desire he held for her. Rafe knew without a doubt that he would want this woman for the rest of his life. He would fight for her and battle anyone who threatened to harm her. And though Rafe knew she was a part of his destiny, deep down inside he was afraid of losing her. He was created in a perfect world. Although he had seen what lived beyond the gates of hell, Rafe had never known any emotion other than joy until now. Remembering the way Gabriel had touched her and the way the demons had held her between them, he felt unfamiliar jealousy and a strong sense of worry flow through him. He didn’t know what to think about being more human now, but one thing was certain. The more human he was, the more chances there were for making mistakes. All angels of heaven were born perfect. They were flawless on the battlefield and, with thought‐out tactics before attacking, they had never known defeat. They’d been crafted with the greatest love and care, but were created for the purpose of defending the gates of heaven. Their dexterity was known throughout heaven and hell, and now the angels

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series would have to put that skill to use on earth. Shielding the humans had become their second purpose. The intensity of the situation angered him. In just one unguarded moment, Rafe could lose who had become the most important person to him. Melina. She mumbled in her sleep, throwing one of her naked legs across his thighs. He closed his eyes against the sight of her body that tempted him, although he couldn’t block the feel of her heat on his skin. He clenched his teeth against the vision of turning Melina onto her back and making sweet, long love to her. Arousal warred with duty. There were too many questions that required answers. Rafe had a feeling Gabriel knew some of the answers he sought. But as much as he thought it best to rise from the bed and seek out Gabriel, Rafe stayed where he was, unwilling to let go of her warmth that seeped into him, igniting the desire he had for her. Melina had felt him even in sleep as her body automatically responded to his presence. Now awakening next to Rafe, her desire for him grew by the minute, and Melina thought she would lose herself in its intensity. Rafe made her feel things that no one else was capable of doing. Her body was just as uncontrollable as her lust, so when she felt the hard, naked male thigh between her legs, rubbing against her clit, Melina instinctively arched her body and began to ride him. Desire shot to her clit as her pussy creamed with need for him. “Rafe,” she pleaded, not knowing what she was asking for, but helpless to deny the sparks of heat shooting to her womb. She could feel her wetness against his naked skin. “That’s it, baby. Ride me, honey.” Rafe groaned against her ear. “Show me how much you want me to be inside of you.” She turned her head and captured his lips, opening her mouth and slipping her tongue inside. She took her time sucking on his tongue, loving the spicy maleness that was uniquely his. Good Lord, this man could kiss. It was almost as if she was making love to his mouth, the same way she wanted him to love her pussy. Rafe broke the kiss and stared at her heatedly. “Melina, babe, I don’t think I can wait any longer. I need to be inside you.” He dislodged

Jade James his thigh from between her legs and rose over her. His eyes glowed white with need for her. She couldn’t stop the cry from leaving her lips. “Rafe!” “Easy, honey…easy.” He placed his hands on the inside of her thighs and pushed her legs open. Melina moaned in shock at the size of his cock. The width was as thick as her wrist and the length would surely cause her pain. “Rafe, I don’t think that’s going to fit,” she said with a healthy dose of concern as he placed the head of his shaft against her pussy. “Oh, it will fit, honey” he replied, taking the blunt head and stroking her clit with it. Embers of yearning traveled throughout her body as he continued to rub against her, bringing her to the point of orgasm, before stopping completely. The fleeting doubt about the width and length of him disappeared quickly as he continued to fondle her clit. Desire overrode her mind as Melina raised her body and tried to impale herself on him. She half succeeded, only engulfing the head of his cock. Her delicate tissues parted, making room for his thickness. Melina bit back a moan as her cream spilled, easing the way for her impalement. “Melina! We have to do this slowly,” he bit out through clenched teeth. He grabbed her thighs, preventing her from spearing herself with his cock. “Rafe, I need you.” “And you shall have me.” He bent toward the curve of her neck, licking at the skin there. Fire rose within her as she moaned and struggled against him. She needed him with a new, desperate urgency. She was speechless, caught in the throes of a craving so great. Melina needed to show him how much she wanted him. Her hands traveled up to his hair, dislodging the band at the nape of his neck. His soft, golden hair parted, and Melina couldn’t help but run her fingers through it. The smooth strands stroked her skin like a lover’s caress. His flat brown nipples were tight with desire. Melina lifted her head, bending forward slightly, and captured one tip in her mouth. She

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series sucked hard, flicking the tip with her tongue, loving the way it stiffened further. Rafe groaned, pushing his cock into her a little more, but then she felt him stop at her inner barrier. He buried his hand in her hair, pulling her head back. She was awed by the flecks of white she saw dancing in his eyes. “I’m sorry, love,” Rafe whispered against her lips. Using his other hand, he pinched and played with one of her nipples. She could actually feel his lust pouring into her while her mind sought to make sense of his words and the tone with which they were delivered. Oh God, could he be regretting all of this? Confusion arose while she battled her body’s desire. “Sorry for what?” she managed to ask around his lips as she breathed in his scent. Male spice, interspersed with the scent of their lovemaking, hung heavy in the air. Rafe didn’t reply, at least not with words. Instead, he answered her question with a quick thrust of his hips, breaking through her maiden shield. Melina shrieked at the slight stinging pain, her body tensing as her mind comprehended the reason for his apology. The soreness was more of an obstacle as her body fought to acknowledge the cock lodged deep within her. She was acutely aware of him when he resumed his plundering motion, and her pussy enclosed him like a tight fist. She moaned, more sensitive now to every rigid line on his cock. “You okay?” he murmured in her ear. She could barely breathe let alone speak, but Melina managed to give him a quick nod while he continued his thrusts. Rafe sucked her nipple, engulfing the aroused tip of her breast into the wet heat of his mouth. Her nails bit into his skin, and she wrapped her legs around his waist, in hopes of slightly anchoring the unbreakable need she had for him. Melina wanted…no, needed the sensations to last longer, but she couldn’t control her body’s call for completion as the need to orgasm started in her womb. The fiery hot streak shot straight to her clit as she yelled, “Harder, Rafe…please.”
44
Jade James As soon as the words left her lips, he began stroking her at a swifter pace, his curly groin hair rubbing her clit. Melina closed her eyes as her body tensed, and she screamed his name again. Her pussy held his cock in a slick, tight grip. She could feel the suction that accompanied every pull until her orgasm struck. Through it all, Rafe continued to fuck her until his body went rigid, and Melina could feel his cock throb twice inside of her before spilling its seed into her womb.

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series
Chapter Eight Rafe couldn’t help but growl in ecstasy even as he acknowledged it was too soon to have slept with her. Even now his rigid cock remained embedded deep within her. He’d never known a desire so great that it ate at him from the inside until he found relief, and yet the yearning remained as if he hadn’t just poured himself into her. Rafe rose onto his elbows and groaned at the way her pussy tightened around him. He pulled himself back, slowly withdrawing his cock from her. Her inner muscles worked to keep him in, gripping tightly on his cock. Her honey‐scented cream hung thick in the air, and he had the strong urge to lick his way across her whole body. Melina’s eyes closed, her mouth opened, and the soft sound of her breathing flitted through the air. “I think I’ve died and gone to heaven.” “I don’t think I could argue with that statement. Honey, let me see those pretty blue eyes,” he said before licking her lips with his tongue. She instinctively opened to him, allowing his tongue entry. He kissed her slowly, relishing her taste. Rafe sucked on her tongue as his cock rubbed against the juices of her pussy. Melina moaned, curving up to him, and he had to force himself to pull away from her and stop. She was still tender, and the last thing he wanted to do was harm her in any way. “Melina, let’s get you into a hot bath.” He rose from the bed and grabbed his pants, pulling them on. Melina blushed, and he noticed the way she eyed the pants that molded to him like a second skin. He frowned when her gaze seemed to

Jade James remain glued to his cock. His good intentions were on the verge of taking another leap...out the window. “Don’t tempt me, honey,” he warned. “There’s nothing I would like better than to spend the day making love to you, but we need to know where Adam is and find out if Gabriel knows anything more.” “I suppose you’re right,” she said with a huff before rising from the bed and grabbing the sheet to wrap it around her. He had a quick view of her luscious rear, and his mouth watered at the sight. He hadn’t paid enough attention to her delectable backside last night. It was definitely something he would remedy later. Rafe walked over and picked her up, making her give up a cute yelp, and then carried her from the bedroom, loving the way she felt in his arms. She giggled. “You know, a lady can get used to this.” “Used to what?” he asked as she wrapped her arms around his neck. “You carrying me around,” Melina replied before tasting his neck with her tongue. “You are going to be the end of me,” Rafe grumbled good‐ naturedly as he flipped her around, positioning her back against the wall and her legs around his waist. “I knew my ability to walk in unannounced would come in handy one day,” Gabriel replied darkly. Melina let out a shriek at the same time Rafe tightened his hand on her bottom, making certain the sheet was still covering her from Gabriel’s gaze. “You have a way of testing my patience,” Rafe snarled, as he walked the remaining steps to the bathroom. He entered, placing Melina on her feet, before dropping a kiss on her open mouth, and closing the door, leaving her inside and him to face their visitor alone. “I do arrive at the best of times, wouldn’t you think?” Rafe eyed his partner in battle. Something wasn’t right with him. His aura had darkened, projecting him with a more dangerous form. He was tempted to delve into his mind and see what the problem was. But even as he thought it, Rafe knew it would be an impossible thing. Gabriel
47
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series had powers even Rafe wasn’t aware of and any attempt to delve into the unknown was never a good thing. Rafe walked into the living room and sat down, knowing Gabriel would follow him. “What exactly is your crisis?” Rafe asked, troubled at the way the archangel was acting. “I have no problem.” “Stop talking in circles,” Rafe hissed, angry now that Gabriel didn’t display a greater trust in him. “Fine. You were sent here already knowing the reasons why. Yet, I’m perplexed on how I can be sent here without knowing anything,” Gabriel replied smoothly, though Rafe could hear the anger mixed with confusion in his voice. “I have never been kept in the dark before.” “You said yourself that we hold no power over our destinies. You have always been straightforward. How can you state the truth and feel something else altogether?” “I do not know, Rafe. The way I’m acting is even more human than I had ever hoped of becoming. Perhaps, the angels were destined to live on earth all along?” “I’m just as confused as you are. The earth is in turmoil, Gabriel. I would have thought our first priority would be to defend the humans, but now that I have found my mate, everything’s shifted. She has become more important to me than life itself, and though I will continue to defend earth, she is and always will come first.” “You have accepted your fate then?” “We can do nothing but accept. We are not powerful enough to change what is already meant to happen,” Rafe acknowledged slowly. “I sense something dark in you my friend. Be careful you do not hold on to it.” “I don’t have an answer for you. There is something deep within me threatening to burst free. I have no understanding of it, but I do sense the tinge of darkness you speak of.” Frustration was evident in the sound of his voice. Rafe heard the anguish, and his soul bled for the pain and confusion Gabriel seemed to be going through. He hoped for Gabriel’s sake he meant what he said. The battle was just beginning, and Rafe had a
48
Jade James feeling it wasn’t going to be an easy one. “Do you know anything about Adam or Melina?” “I know nothing about Melina. Adam on the other hand has a huge obstacle to overcome. That is all that was revealed to me, but I sense that we need to find him very soon. We should already be out searching for him.” “Why didn’t you tell me this before?” Melina screamed from the hallway entry. Rafe looked up, seeing her eyes go dark with anger. He shot up from the sofa and grabbed Melina by the arms as she stormed toward Gabriel. She hadn’t bothered to tie her long hair back, instead leaving it loose to cascade around her, which gave her a wilder, sexier look. She had changed into black jeans and a black tank top, and he caught the scent of honey when he neared her. Just like that, his cock hardened in need of her again. Uneasy, Rafe squelched his desire for her. Now was no time to think of sex, not when anger was her primary emotion. The words pissed off couldn’t even begin to describe the way she felt. Melina scowled at Rafe, angry over his interference. She jerked her arm, trying to free herself, but Rafe’s strength held her securely. She wanted to smack Gabriel’s face. Instead she fisted her hands, digging her nails into her skin. Why would he lie about something so important? “I asked you last night if you knew anything about Adam, and you lied. Now, I want to know why?” Melina fought against the urge to step back as Gabriel rose to his full height. She hadn’t noticed before how much taller he was than Rafe. His character radiated dominance, and with his dark hair billowing around him, he looked more like an avenging angel than a guardian angel. She felt Rafe stroke her back, soothing her physically as he reached out with his power and warmed her from the inside. “Stop that,” she hissed at Rafe, stepping away from him, wanting to hold on to her anger. “You asked about his future, his destiny, and I answered you truthfully. I know it not. Besides, you weren’t ready for the answers you sought,” Gabriel murmured mysteriously. Arrogant bastard.
49
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series “I am far from arrogant. I stand before you humbly, following the orders of my King.” Melina gasped in surprise. “You can read my mind?” “If it serves a purpose, then yes, I can.” “Use your powers elsewhere,” she ordered as Rafe ignored her earlier demand to stop and maneuvered himself against her back, continuing to radiate his heat into her. She half‐turned her head, seeing Rafe over her shoulder through her peripheral vision. “I can’t concentrate when you do that.” Melina felt the first stirring of desire. “Good,” he whispered as he nibbled on her neck. Distracted, Melina tilted her head, offering him access. She should have been mystified by his ability to reduce her to a creamy puddle in mere seconds. Just like that, her anger vanished and, for the moment, she didn’t care that Gabriel was still there watching them intensely. “Listen to what Gabriel has to say,” Rafe urged before licking the outer shell of her ear. Melina peered warily at Gabriel, trying to ignore her throbbing clit and wet panties. “I didn’t, nor do I ever lie, Melina. I was sent here with the understanding that this was to be my new place to live. The Creator never told me anything about you. He did say Adam had a huge decision to make soon. That is all I know. The information would not have helped you last night, nor does it help you now. It is Adam’s obligation to see this through.” Gabriel continued to stare, holding her gaze. Melina heard the tinge of annoyance in his tone and saw his eyes darken in color, but she wasn’t the least bit bothered by it. If he would have been upfront about what he knew in the first place, then she wouldn’t have to question him like this. She could tell he wasn’t used to explaining himself to any human. “That response does not stop my need to help him. We could have begun searching for him last night.” “We shall begin our search now, just as it has been ordained,” Gabriel replied, and then walked out the door.

Chapter Nine “What is wrong with him?” Melina asked, turning to Rafe for an answer. “He seems…I can’t describe it, but there’s something not quite right. What is he holding back, Rafe?” “Melina, I know you love your brother with all of your heart. I recognize it not by your words alone, but by your actions and even the feelings I sense within you.” He paused, with a look crossing his handsome face that made apprehension grip her heart. “But what Gabriel can’t quite bring himself to say is that Adam may be already lost to you.” “No! I won’t accept that.” Melina cried. It was too much. She felt bombarded by too many conflicting emotions. Love for Rafe, an equally strong but different love for Adam, and failure. That’s what hurt the most. Feeling as if she disappointed her parents by failing to raise Adam the right way. She loved her brother. He was what kept her sane when the world darkened with insanity. She closed her eyes against the flood of tears threatening to overtake her. “My love, look at me,” Rafe whispered. His hot lips grazed hers, encouraging her to obey. She raised her eyes to his. “I will always love you, no matter what. We are individuals here, in any part of this world, and beyond. We are responsible for our own failures and our own achievements. We do not know as of yet if he’s been marked. No matter what happens, always remember, you’re not alone. I’m by your side, forever.” She felt him literally touching her soul, reassuring her with his love. The revelation left her speechless. Never before had she felt so loved,

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series desired, as she felt when she was with him. She still worried about Adam, but Rafe made her believe in more. In miracles. He gave her the courage to hope for a better future. She wanted to tell him how she really felt. Instead she replied, “Let’s go find Adam. Gabriel’s waiting.” * * * * * “Do you have any idea where Adam could be?” Rafe asked as they stepped out of the house. He spotted Gabriel beside the truck. “There’s an overpass called Hollows Point,” she said. “Underneath it, there’s a club. Adam has been hanging out there. The only reason I know about it is because I overheard his friends talking about random initiations into an underground level, which caters to the marked souls.” “You have never been there?” Rafe asked as he held the driver side door open for her to enter. “I passed it once or twice, but I could never bring myself to enter that place. It gives me the creeps. I’ve seen some of the monsters that enter there, and they aren’t the same ones that roam the street.” “Can you describe the difference?” Gabriel asked as he got in the vehicle. “There’s one that stood out. His hair was the color of a moonless midnight, and his eyes were just as dark. Empty and...Evil. The monsters walking around the streets have nothing on that man.” “Do you think he’s human?” Rafe asked her as Melina started the engine. She put the truck in reverse before she answered him. “Far from human. I wouldn’t have believed such an evil thing could exist, if I hadn’t seen those cold, black eyes myself. They were almost like a portal into hell itself.” “Lucifer,” Rafe shouted angrily. “The bastard is in search of more souls. And what an easy place to target. A place full of drugs, crime, and drink.” “Isn’t that Satan’s name?”
52
Jade James Rafe saw her hands tighten, her knuckles turn white, and her body shiver in fear. The urge to haul her into his arms and comfort her was so strong. “He has many names, but is going by the name of Damien Hellos now, and yes, you have stared into the eyes of the devil himself.” He knew she was worried, but Melina needed the truth above all else, and Rafe refused to lie to her. “If Damien is there, then we may be too late,” Gabriel said derisively. Rafe half‐turned, quickly giving Gabriel a glance. “There is still hope. If it has not been ordained, then hope remains. You would do well to remember that, my friend.” Melina’s hand reached out to him, silently thanking him for the words. But as much as Rafe wanted to think he had said them for her, he hadn’t. Gabriel needed to be reminded that hope was the beginning to everything. * * * * * Rafe entered the dark club, immediately encountering a group of demons in the hall. At the sight of Rafe and Gabriel standing side by side with their swords in hand, the monsters chose wisely and fled. Rafe tightened his hand on Melina. He had tried to convince her to stay in the truck for her own safety, but she refused, which made his task all the more difficult. Now for the first time, Rafe headed into battle with his stomach replaced by a bottomless pit of churning emotions. Candles spaced evenly along the damp walls illuminated the long entryway and its floor, painted jet black. The stench of sulfur hung in the air. It wasn’t the first time he and Gabriel had entered a demonic liar, but this one seemed viler than any of its predecessors. Every nook oozed with evilness. Rafe reached the first level of the club. Some humans were dancing to the music that blared loudly from the stage. Others huddled around tables with trays of drugs before them.
53
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series Rafe could identify the demons immediately, sprinkled among the masses. Those who used the shield of human flesh to cover their hideousness. They were the ones the humans needed to avoid. He sensed Emma, before seeing her. Her stench hadn’t faded with time, but had instead grown stronger. Once, a long time ago, she had smelled like the cleanest downpour of rain. Now, as she stopped beside him, all Rafe could discern was the burning stench from rotted flesh. “I see you’ve finally come home, Rafe,” she purred against his ear, before facing him fully. Rafe saw Gabriel’s grip tighten on the handle of his sword at the same time he felt Melina step forward. He wrapped his arm around her waist, holding her against him. Not yet, Gabriel, Rafe thought, knowing the archangel would hear him. Telepathy was another of their gifts, and it had come in handy many times. Say when, Gabriel replied without uttering a single word aloud. Rafe shared his readiness. He would like nothing more then to get rid of Emma once and for all. But he needed to find out where Adam was first. Melina wanted to knock Emma’s face in. She would’ve done it, too, if not for Rafe, who grabbed her around the waist and held her to the side. The sight of that demonic witch whispering into Rafe’s ear infuriated her. “Where’s Adam?” Melina bit out. “I can feel your violent energy pouring out of you, Melina. Why don’t you come here? We can get to know each other a little better, before I take you to Adam,” Emma replied mockingly. The vicious she‐demon was toying with her. Melina wanted nothing more than to slap that playful look off her face. “She’s not going to repeat herself, and neither am I. Where’s Adam?” Rafe asked loudly. The sound of his voice leaped off the walls. The music stopped. Humans and demons alike turned to stare at them before parting into two rows. Melina saw Rafe ready himself for battle, his gaze fixed on something, or someone, across the room. A figure, dressed in a black robe, the face hidden under the hood, stood facing them at the other end, bracketed by the parted rows. Melina knew immediately who lay shrouded beneath the hood as soon as he
54
Jade James started walking toward them. She wanted to look away from him, but something held her immoveable. Damien grasped the edges of his hood and pulled it back. He was a beautiful man physically, but Melina knew what lay beneath was far from beautiful. He presented a contradictory picture to what he really was. “You are looking for your brother?” The words flowed from Damien’s lips with almost a lyrical cadence. Rafe tightened his hold on her, his aura surrounding her in protective comfort and familiarity. At ease with his heated presence, Melina knew in that instant that he was her destiny. She felt gleeful at the sight of the scowl on Emma’s face. Her body went rigid with apparent jealously as she sidled up to Damien, her gaze never leaving Melina’s. Rafe’s strength and love gave her the courage to respond. “Where is he?” Melina asked as she scanned the crowd for Adam. “Are you willing to bargain with me for him?” She almost laughed at Damien’s question. If it hadn’t been for Rafe, yes, she would have probably traded her soul for Adam’s. But she had someone else to live for now, and the battle was far from over. Rafe released Melina’s waist, once he was sure that she would not succumb to Damien’s evil persuasiveness. Get ready to hold off Damien and his minions. I will take Melina and search for Adam, Rafe directed Gabriel telepathically. Will do. Gabriel sheathed his sword and brought his hands forward, palms face up. White iridescent light blasted forth, creating a barrier between them and the evil entities. Damien had no time to retaliate, his face twisting into a mask of fury. He screamed loudly as a shot of black light bounced off the barrier and slammed back into him. The only evil not held in the shield was Emma. Rafe gave her no time to run. He swung his sword in an arc and stopped the blade at Emma’s neck. Her eyes burned with rage. “I told you I will not ask again,” Rafe said. “He’s in the room to your left,” she screeched then, raising one finger tipped with a dangerously long nail, she indicated the entryway.
55
Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series Rafe nudged her with his sharp blade, digging the metal in, leaving a thin trace of blood on her neck. “After you.” * * * * * Melina screamed, agony piercing her heart at the sight of Adam. He lay curled in a fetal position on the floor. Blood coated his back and stained his dark pants, dripping on the hard wooden floor. Uncertain where to touch him without causing him pain, Melina shouted, “Adam…Adam.” She fell to her knees beside him. Ever so gently, she turned him over only to discover his chest also caked with blood. He had been whipped; the deep cuts were still bleeding profusely. “Please, wake up. Adam, it’s me, Mel.” Adam’s eyes opened slowly. “Mel?” He groaned in pain. “How long...?” “How long, what?” “In pain, Mel. It hurts so bad.” He moaned through clenched teeth. “Not too long, babe.” Oh God, had he been tortured all night? Guilt overwhelmed her at the thought of being unable to find him sooner. “Close your eyes and think really hard, Adam. I can’t tell with all of this blood. Have you taken the mark?” “No!” Adam tried to rise from his position. Melina placed her hands on his shoulder, holding him down. “Take it easy. Relax.” “I didn’t. I remembered what you said. I didn’t.” Melina let the tears spill free. “I love you. You know that, right? Come on champ, it’s time to get out of here.” She placed his arm around her shoulder and struggled, but finally got him to his feet. His cries of pain sliced her heart. Melina saw Rafe had backed Emma into a corner, the sword pointing dead at her heart. “He didn’t take the mark,” she stated with relief. “But he is still mine. Aren’t you, Adam?” Emma asked in a seductive drawl. Oh God, this must be the decision Gabriel was talking about.

Jade James Melina wished she was the one wielding Rafe’s sword. She’d cut the she‐devil’s tongue out with it. Her eyes narrowed on Emma as they all awaited Adam’s reply. Please, please let him choose right. “I…am…not…yours,” Adam moaned before closing his eyes once more. “Wait outside the door, Melina. I’ll be right there,” Rafe said without looking away from Emma. Melina nodded and left. Outside, she leaned against the cold dark wall, transferring Adam’s weight between the hard barrier and her body. “By all that is holy, you will never breathe in any form again!” At the sound of Rafe’s voice and determination, Melina shivered. * * * * * Rafe spared a glance at the entryway, grateful that Melina and Adam had left. He turned just in time to see Emma leap over his head and land on the other side of the room. “By all that is holy, you will never breathe in any form again!” he shouted at her. “Think again,” she countered. Her hand out, she shot a black lightning bolt his way. Rafe jumped quickly, avoiding the black sulfur. “You had your chance to repent. Now you will die for causing so much pain.” Rafe waited for Emma to stupidly make her next move. She raced at him, her body engulfed with black burning sulfur, threatening to burn him where he stood. Rafe met her halfway, leaping into the air at the last possible second. He swung his sword, his aim true. Emma shrieked as the sound of sliced flesh and crunched bone rang loudly in the air, and then her body dissolved into embers. His body remained rigid, disappointment racing through him at the thought of losing one of God’s creations. But she had threatened everything he held dear and for that alone she died. He stepped from the room, sheathed his sword, and gently took Adam from Melina. “She will endanger no other any longer. It is time for us to leave.”

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series Rafe approached Gabriel, who still had the force field in place. “Leave the barrier. Let them find another way out.” “I will see you again,” Damien shouted, his black eyes gleaming in hate. “I agree. It’s far from over. In fact, I feel it’s just begun,” Gabriel replied. “Watch your back minion, for next time it will be you and I who clash.”

Chapter Ten One Month Later Melina sighed in relaxation as warm bath bubbles caressed her skin. Rafe had done what she thought was impossible. He had actually found them a comfortable place to live. Bewildered, she’d asked him how he knew where the remote cabin was, but Rafe had simply answered that the Creator was behind all things. The cabin was far from anything lavish, but the three bedroom cottage had water and basic furnishings. The garden in the back served its purpose, providing food for them so they wouldn’t have to venture into the city. When Rafe had suggested they move to the mountains, where there were fewer sightings of monsters, Melina quickly agreed. The city had become even worse now that Damien was unleashing more of those things from hell on a daily basis. She knew this was just the beginning of the end, but she needed to try and give Adam a place without danger where he could heal physically, and a chance to heal emotionally. It had taken Adam two weeks for his wounds to mend. His skin would remain scarred. But it was a small price to pay, compared to how horrible it could have been. And yet he walked around troubled, like a lost puppy in search of a home. Melina’s heart broke for him, but there was nothing more she could do. As much as it hurt her to see him this way, Adam would have to work things out on his own.

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series Gabriel had stayed with them for two weeks, until he had decided it was time to move on. Melina sensed a restlessness in him, and she prayed that Gabriel would understand the cause of it soon. She couldn’t even begin to comprehend what someone like him was going through, but she had offered him her friendship, hoping he would confide in her sometime soon. Melina raised her hand, staring at the simple gold band Rafe had given her. As soon as they had rescued Adam, Rafe had asked her to be his wife. Overjoyed, she’d agreed. The simple wedding ceremony took place in the mountains, attended by Adam as Best Man and Gabriel, who had performed the rites, ensuring their bond for eternity. And still she worried about their future, although not as much as before. Through it all, Rafe had been there for her. They’d spent almost every minute of each day and night together. She loved him deeply, and couldn’t bear to be without him for a second. She had never told him how she felt, instead choosing to show him. But today would be different. She intended on letting him know exactly how much he meant to her. Melina turned off the bath, knowing her mate was already waiting for her on the bed. She washed up quickly, rinsed, and then climbed from the tub, drying herself off. She opened the door, her gaze tracing the contours and muscled plains of her lover’s naked body. He was perfection in the most unique sense. At the sight of him alone, her blood raced through her veins, and the tips of her breasts ached in anticipation, making her pussy cream. Melina slowly walked to him, enjoying the way her husband’s eyes widened, heated, at the sight of her naked skin. Rafe’s arousal shot straight up. Her mouth watered, craving a taste of him. She positioned herself on the footboard, and took her time committing every fine curve and detail into memory. Minutes ticked by, but she refused to be rushed. Melina crawled between his spread legs and traced his heavy sac with her fingertip. He moaned approvingly, his body jumping slightly as she fondled his balls. The velvety feel of his hot skin entranced her. “I have much to thank you for,” she whispered before she bent down and laved his sac with her tongue. His rich, clean scent made her hunger for more of him.

She licked his delicate silky skin, tracing with her tongue the rigid, pronounced vein that pulsed underneath. His hands grasped her hair, tightening on the strands. “Take it into your mouth, honey,” Rafe said, then growled deeply. She did as he said, not ever wanting to deny him anything he desired. She placed her mouth on the sensitive head, licking the slit and enjoying the taste of his essence. Melina sucked in more of him, but was only able to get half of his hard cock into her mouth. She played with his sac, squeezed the base of his cock, and reveled in his rough groans and encouraging lift to his hips. “I’m not wasting any of my seed this way, Melina. Climb on top, babe. I need you,” Rafe rumbled, his heavy breaths offering loud evidence to how close he was to losing control. Melina continued to suck until his balls had drawn up tight. Then, a wet pop echoed in the room as she released him. She climbed over him, placing the tip of his cock at the entrance of her pussy. Looking up, she paused to gain his undivided attention, met his passionate gaze and smiled. “I love you, Rafe. You are my heart, my life, and keeper of my soul,” she said, then slowly lowered herself onto his rigid cock. Her soft declaration amazed him. Rafe knew she cared about him. Her daily actions toward him told him that much, although she’d never uttered those words before. I love you, Rafe. He had told her he’d be patient, but hadn’t realized then what a struggle it would be. He needed to know what was really inside her heart. He could have entered her mind and sought out how she felt about him, but he’d waited patiently, wanting to hear the words come from her lips. And now that she had told him, he felt her love all the way to his soul, like a blazing light illuminating a sense of peace that he’d sought for ages. He was momentarily speechless at the sight of her. Her red hair flowed free, the ends of the strands tickling his thighs as she raised herself above him. The need to flip her around and pound into her roared

He groaned as his hips jerked up, piercing her taut heat. His hands tightened on her luscious thighs. Rafe stared into her eyes, gathering the love he had for her into his energy and giving it all to her. “I love you more than anything in this world,” he said. “You are more important to me than my own existence.” He pushed harder into her, seeking to join with her forever. Her pussy tightened on him, drawing out his seed. Unable to hold back any longer, he shot his hot liquid into her. Melina collapsed on top of him, her body pliant and relaxed. Rafe traced her spine as she shivered under his caress. He refused to pull out, feeling a deep satisfaction that a part of his body remained deeply embedded in hers. He had an eternity to show her how much he appreciated the gift of her love, and he was going to use every second to show her what a precious gift she was. Rafe sent a silent prayer above, thanking his Lord for sending her into his life.

Epilogue The night shielded his movements well. The beasts roaming around the streets wouldn’t dare to confront him, although they acknowledged him with hatred in their eyes. They were of no importance to him. He had no time to dally with the monsters, and if one was stupid enough to think he could beat the highest of archangels, the demon would end up dead in seconds. Gabriel walked with a purpose. He knew where he was destined to go, and who he was to meet, but that was all. He was angry that the reason was never revealed to him, and shocked that he, once a perfect specimen, could even feel such an irate emotion. He never went into battle without foreknowledge, but this time he’d received his orders with little other information. Regardless, he couldn’t deny them. He would have to be patient, which was something he learned aided in battle. The reason and meaning for his fate would come soon, but there was still an inkling of awareness. He was almost sure that whatever was in the warehouse would put up a fight. The outcome of it wouldn’t be a surprise to him, though. He was the best in all things. It wasn’t a gloating or conceited thought. It simply was what it was. A fact. He’d been created to be the best, and Gabriel had succeeded under humbling circumstances. With the help of his Creator, he had maintained his perfection in all things for centuries. Gabriel stopped at the large, black, wooden door. The building was five stories tall, with massive windows. He knew this served as a home to

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series some of the most demonic evils and lost humans. But it was also home to a woman who had been forced into a life of servitude. “You might succeed in making me into a whore, but I refuse to take the mark,” a loud female voice stated venomously behind the door. “There is no way in hell you can make me.” Gabriel smirked at the fierceness in her tone. “You were born a slut and will die like one. Take the mark now, or I’ll feed you to the demons,” an cruel male voice filtered through the door. The sound of a slap, followed by a scream had Gabriel tensing and removing his sword. He kicked the door, rupturing it from its hinges. The sight before him would have made a human run away in fear. Luckily for the woman lying on the floor, he was far from human. It could have passed for a scene right out of a horror movie, but sadly it was a gross reality—a probability of what awaited some of the inhabitants on earth. A dark‐haired woman hung on a cross, entrails spilling out of her body and her lifeblood pouring like a river onto the dirty, planked floor. She’d been sliced across the stomach, gutted as if she was nothing more than a piece of garbage. The gory scene struck him like a rush of lightning. Gabriel knew instantly she’d died earlier because she had refused the mark of the beast. It was an unfortunate thing that some humans were fated to die in such torturous ways to ensure their place above. Fortunately, those who refused the permanent stain immediately crossed to the gates of heaven to live a life without worries. Gabriel’s mind took in the whole scene as his gaze clashed with a set of angry, green eyes. Another woman sat in the pool of blood, shivering with fright. A dark green‐eyed man stood beside her as he wielded a silver machete. Gabriel raised his hand, commanding a ball of white light to appear, and then slammed it into the gruesome, murderous monster who held the woman captive. The light took hold of him, ensuring the man remained paralyzed until Gabriel felt like dealing with him. He turned, taking his time to study the vixen frozen in fear. Gabriel couldn’t make out her features because of the long, dark hair shielding most of her face, but that didn’t deter him from staring at her. Silence

Jade James reigned for a few more seconds as time stood still, and a spark of fire flew between them. It slammed into him with the force of a train wreck, and with it came the knowledge that she was his mate, the one he had waited centuries for.

Chapter One “I’m here to see Rick,” she told the bouncer. “He’s expecting me.” A long line of hopefuls stretched out behind her, and she heard a grumble or two when she’d waltzed to the front. She could have told them you practically had to have an engraved invitation to get in. She did, in fact, but she tried not to dwell on it. “Name?” he asked, indolently leaning against the door, arms crossed over his chest. He was tall and more beefy than muscular. A blond, blue‐eyed California boy by the looks of him. Not a bad specimen, but definitely not her type. “Nikki,” she answered. She hoped Rick filled in his door help, so she wouldn’t have to use her last name or rank where so many people could overhear. The last thing she wanted or needed was for word to get out that she’d been to a sex club. He opened the door and spoke to someone on the inside before nodding her through. Two bouncers at one door? The owner took his security seriously. The second bouncer was a carbon copy of the first, and she blinked with surprise as she realized Rick had instructed her to dress just as his employees did; in boots, jeans, and a plain black t‐shirt. She didn’t get much of a chance to look around as she followed him up a narrow set of stairs near the front door and into a glass enclosed

Rafe’s War: Book 1 Apocalyse Series room that overlooked the club’s ground floor. Her general impression of the downstairs was a large smoky room. Three men sat facing away from her, and she hung back as the bouncer leaned down and spoke quietly to one of them. When the man stood, she stepped around the bouncer. He was tall and lanky with short‐cropped graying hair and reserved eyes. Approaching him, she held out her hand and said, “You must be Rick.” “Yes,” he answered, pausing a moment before briefly clasping her fingers. “Nikki. This is a very unusual request.” “I understand,” she answered. “But the guy I’m looking for is one of my best people, and I don’t want to charge him with AWOL.” She shrugged. “Some of his platoon buddies told me I’d find him here.” Rick nodded, the remote expression not leaving his face. She got the impression she had been judged before she even arrived, and found lacking. She arched an eyebrow. “I don’t want to be here anymore than you want me here. With any luck I can find him quickly and get out of your hair.” Curiosity overcame her better judgment, and she approached the glass wall, looking down into the club while Rick considered her words. “Don’t want to partake of our hospitality, Nikki?” The amused drawl came from one of the other men seated behind her. She stiffened in recognition. Damn. Slowly, she turned her head to look over her shoulder. “Mack. Why am I not surprised to find you here?” “Fate at work?” he asked in a sexy voice that skittered up her spine. She laughed. “Oh no. This is so not my scene. You know that.” He did know that, because they’d discussed it the first time he asked her out. She was in charge of a special military investigative task force, and he was in a similar position on another team. For the last six months they’d shared office space. The proximity was making her a little crazy, and her poor vibrator had been through the ringer. He infuriated her, he made her laugh, and he sure as hell turned her on, but she wasn’t about to risk her career to test an attraction for something a little risqué. In her book, dominance and submission games definitely fell into that
