A note to parents… Whether they’re short trips or long holidays, vacations are always magical! From the mounting anticipation before departure, to the journey back home, each moment of a child’s vacation is bound to be filled with exciting new emotions, experiences and discoveries. We have created “My Vacation Journal” so that children can record everything they experience before, during and after their holidays; and they can do so in a fun and creative way. We invite them to describe their days and experiences through the use of words, drawings and collages, but also through various activities whose wide-ranging themes touch on science, arts and languages. We also suggest games and activities they can do on their own. And thus, through words, images and interaction, children are compelled to personalize “their” vacation journal and to keep lasting memories of their experiences and encounters. As the book’s content integrates many basic skills, taking a few minutes to familiarize yourself with this book will help you determine how you can make the most of it. The book also provides opportunities to create projects, putting emphasis on planning, execution and self-assessment. Of course, you can always leave it to your child to discover the contents of these pages as s/he wishes but even the most independent child might require your involvement at one time or another, if only to collect shells… Happy Holidays,
teacher

I went swimming in the ocean first thing this morning… it was pretty cold! But the water was super clear, so I got to see lots of shrimp swimming by! Then, in the afternoon, Caroline and I built a big, beautiful sandcastle, with lots of towers and windows everywhere… but Mom told us to move into the shade or we would get sunburned!

Colour/ Pattern
This map needs your artistic talents! Choose a colour or a pattern with which to fill in the little square opposite each category (example: “Country where I know someone” = red square). All you have to do next is to colour the map according to the colour or pattern (i.e. dashes, dots, plus signs) you have chosen. Of course, a country can have more than one colour or pattern. Think about mixing and matching: for example, you can colour the countries of Africa yellow and fill the countries where English is spoken with dots… Therefore, the English speaking countries of Africa will be yellow with dots.

What is it called?
What is it made of?
On holiday, we often get to taste a lot of new things! Maybe an exotic fruit, a traditional dish from another region, or even weird-coloured candies… sometimes they taste good, sometimes they don’t! On these pages, write all the new things you have tasted during your vacation. In the little box, rate how much you liked each new thing, using this system: 0 = Yuck! 1 = Not great 2 = So-so 3 = Good 4 = Mmm! Delicious! 5 = I love it!

Now that your vacation is over, what do you see when you close your eyes and think about your trip? What images come to your mind? Why do you remember those things in particular? Among the discoveries you have made, maybe there are some objects you would like to start collecting? If so, you may want to put these vacation treasures in a plastic or cardboard folder to protect them on the way home. You can even plan ahead and bring a special folder with you on vacation for your collection. One final tip: Instead of concentrating on just one or two objects, try to keep your collection varied so it will remind you of all the different experiences you have had. In some places, however, it is forbidden to take things out of their natural environment, so make sure to respect the rules wherever you are. There are also regulations that prevent travellers from bringing home certain animals, seeds or food from a foreign country. Make sure to ask your parents about the different rules and regulations so you can avoid any unnecessary problems or disappointments. List the objects that interest you:
er petals
business cards
receipts
food wrappers

Game Factory Doing arts and crafts is one of the best ways to entertain yourself. Here are three ideas for things you can create. Of course, you will need scissors, glue and your favourite colouring tools . To make a mask, it’s best to start with one you have already. Personalize it by painting and decorating it with accessories like feathers, sequins, beads or anything you like. Another fun thing to do is salvage used objects and recycle them into new ones. For example, you can use
an old juice box and 4 bottle caps to make a truck; or a cash register receipt to craft a bracelet or a watch. It’s easy to make a puppet out of a brown paper bag or a cardboard tube. If you don’t have those materials, you can simply paint faces on your fingers! And why not put on a puppet show? Think about your story before staging it. You will need a good plot - with a beginning, a problem, a solution and an ending. A puppet theatre isn’t necessary but it can be fun. You can make one using a big cardboard box.
Sketches, Plays or Mimes
61
A good way to have fun is to prepare a sketch that you can perform. You could stage a sad clown/ happy clown performance. First, decide who will play the happy clown (the pesky one) and the sad clown (the clumsy one). Then invent a story, with a situation and a conclusion that you can improvise.
You can also experiment with mime and get your audience to guess what you are acting out. Try rehearsing in front of the mirror first. Here are three good categories to start with: Animals, Sports and Jobs.
The Rotating Corpse It may be a weird title, but you’ll see that playing The Rotating Corpse is lots of fun! With your friends, take a sheet of paper and fold it in three equal sections. On one third of the folded sheet, one of you will draw the head, letting the lines of the neck extend to the next folded section. Make sure no one sees your drawing! Then, hide the head part and pass on the sheet to your friend who will draw the body on the second section, and so on for the legs on the last third of the page. When you are done, unfold the page and check out the result! Crazy, right?

An Idea! Here are a few words that have families large enough to fill a flower: play, colour, song, light, school, write.
RocRkace
For this game, you will need a pebble that is smaller than a marble and a flat area at least 50 centimetres long. Using only your breath, blow on the pebble to get it to cross the finish line. You can also change the game by using a straw. There is no limit to the amount of players.
The Knee Cap For this game, cover your knee with a piece of fabric. Any piece of fabric will do. Then, draw a face on your leg as if the fabric was the bandana on his head. By moving the muscles in your leg, you make your character move. And you can even find him a friend by doing the same with the other knee!

Guess Who I’m Thinking Of First, choose a person in your head. It can be anyone. Then, other people ask you questions to guess the name of that person. You can answer their questions - but only with “yes” or “no”.
This game calls for an open space with no people or fragile objects. Choose a target. Remove the heel part of your shoe from your foot. Throw your leg forward and try to hit the target with your shoe. You need to hit the target to win. If there are many players and no one hits the target, the winner will be the one who threw the shoe the closest to the target. If you have lots of space, you can also play ‘Who Throws the Shoe the Farthest’.

Each line is a description of the line above. Here is the trick: you have to read the line out loud and break up the numbers. For example on the second line, you won’t read 11 (eleven) but “one 1” (which is on the first line)… On the third line you won’t read 21 (twenty-one) but “two 1’s” (which is on the second line); the fourth line “one 2 and one 1” (which is on the third line); the fifth goes “one 1, one 2, two 1’s” (which is on the fourth line) and so on…

What A Feat! (page 58) The legs of seven kids: 7 kids x 2 legs per kid = 14 legs The legs of seven cats: 7 cats x 4 legs per cat = 28 legs The number of kittens: 7 kittens per bag x 7 bags = 49 kittens The legs of 49 kittens: 49 kittens x 4 legs per kittens = 196 legs So, the number of legs is: 14 + 28 + 196 = 238 But don’t forget to count the driver! Add two legs… 238 + 2 = 240!
