Chapter 1 **** The castle walls were damp. The musky smell of mold and rotting flesh rose up to meet Celeste, the rank odor almost took her breath. The rocks beneath her feet were slick. She took each step with care as no torches were lit to lead her way to the dungeon. A light brush against her skirt startled a gasp. A hand covered her mouth, a hard lean body pressed tightly against her back. "Shh, love it's me." "Sebastian." She tried to turn only to have him push her gently against the wall, her front pressed against the cold damp stones. "No, not yet, I must have you." His voice was husky, rough with his need. He pulled urgently at her skirt to lift it above her hips. No undergarment hampered his movements. He reached between their bodies and released his member from the restraint of his too tight trousers. He lifted both her arms above her body, careful that his long claws did not scratch her delicate skin. His cock pulsed, anxious to sink deep within the warmth of Celeste's body. His teeth lengthened and he pressed slowly into her silken warmth. As he drove deeper into her soft welcoming heat, his fangs nipped lightly on the flesh below her right ear. Celeste moaned and hugged her body tighter into the wall to keep from falling to the floor. She arched as the pleasure 6

became too much and pushed her body back against the thrusts as Sebastian sucked and nipped at her neck. She no longer cared that the rough surface of the walls scratched and tore at the exposed skin of her hands and face. She wanted the pleasure that only Sebastian could give her. Ecstasy was building, the pressure near to bursting; Sebastian knew he could wait no longer. He thrust roughly into Celeste's warmth once, twice and with the third deep thrust roared his climax. Gently he lapped at the mark he left on her neck. "Ah Love; you and only you fulfill me." At last sated, the beast curled within and only the man was left to stand and face the woman he loved but was fated to never have. A soft rustling was followed by the soft glow of a candle. Celeste turned to face Sebastian. Her skirt fell in gentle folds around her slippered feet. "I don't understand why you must always take me from behind as an animal takes its mate. Can you not stand to see my face as you love me?" She rubbed the ugly blemish that ran down the left side of her face. An accident as a small child left her severely scarred from a corn knife. Sebastian lovingly traced the outline of the deep ragged scar that ran from Celeste's eye down to the corner of her mouth. "Never think that. You are beautiful." "If you believe this, then please tell me why?" "You have lived here your whole life and are aware of the curse." He pushed the long hair back from his face. "The witches of Kilskeagh have sworn that I will never have 7

pleasure without turning into a beast. Never would I put you through such pain nor have you fear me." "Ack, the curse is nothing but your aunts trying to keep you to themselves. It is an old tale to keep young children in line." She raised her arm to trace his lips. "You are beautiful and man or beast, you are the one that I love, will always love." Sebastian grabbed her hand, he must not become aroused else the beast would resurface; already he could feel it stirring within. "The curse is true as are the three witches of Kilskeagh Castle. Aunts or not, they do not want me to find happiness. The line must die with me." "If what you say is true and your aunts are witches, why have you not banished them?" Celeste distrusted the women, always on the receiving end of their cruel trickery. Sebastian cupped her face tenderly. "It is not as easy as that, sweet. 'Twas not the aunts which cursed me, but my own mothair; I do not trust the aunts, but hope that someday the curse may be removed. They are my family and though I do not holy trust them and know that they wish me dead because of the curse, I cannot throw them and their children out." "Watch yourself Sebastian, I know not what I would do were something to happen to you." She reared up to kiss him gently on the chin and turned to leave. He grabbed her hand. "My only concern is you my love, I wish to hold you close, but my enemies I must keep closer for the good of you, me and the entire clan." 8
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
He turned her and led the way back up the steep steps. He gripped her hand tightly, not yet ready to release her. "You must go before you are seen." Celeste stopped on the step below him. She pulled at his hand but he did not release his grip. "Why must we hide our feelings? In the dead of night, you love me as if there is no tomorrow, but in the light of day, you don't even speak to me. I feel as though you are just using me. I'm no better than a barmaid used for a quick tumble." "Never!" He pulled her up the step and into his arms. "I only seek to protect you. No one must know of us, you would be cruelly treated. I am not worthy of you and shudder to think of the day when some lucky man will claim you for his own." "I will never belong to another. You are the only man whom will ever know my body. And I am repulsive to everyone in the village because of my disfigurement." She pulled away and rushed up the steps. "I can find my own way." She stumbled at the entrance and with nothing to break her fall, she landed on the rocky surface. The skin on her knee tore and she cried out in pain. Sebastian rushed to her aid. She held up her hand and leaped to her feet. "No, leave off. I must go." She rushed down the path to the little cottage which sat next to the ale house. Silently she opened the door so as not to waken her stepfather and went inside. Sebastian watched anxiously and let out a sigh to see that she had made it safely home. [Back to Table of Contents] 9

Chapter 2 Celeste walked carefully around the Laird's table. Her head bowed, she watched her feet as she shuffled across the room. The men talked loudly, belching and laughing as they broke their morning fast. Margaret stood at Sebastian's right shoulder as he sat at the head of the table. "Get moving you lazy serf." She spat the words with hatred. No one spoke a word and all laughter stopped as the men waited to see what Margaret would do to the young lass whom was always the brunt of her wrath. "Leave off, Aunt." Sebastian raised his hand palm out. "The Lass is completing her assigned chores." "Do you show favor to this serf over your own flesh and blood?" she seethed. "I have more important things to do than worry about petty scuffles between you and the women who work in this castle." Sebastian pushed his chair back and rose to his feet. "If you've finished your meal, you have duties to perform." He dismissed the men and watched worriedly to see what his aunt would do. A pitiful cry came from the corner. Celeste walked slowly toward the sound. A castle dog had given birth some weeks before and she was anxious to get a look at the pups now that their eyes would be open. She squatted down as to not startle the little family. Something was not right, the cry was weak. She wrinkled her nose at the unpleasant odor. 10
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"What are you doing there?" Margaret grabbed Celeste's shoulder where she knelt over the bitch dog and her litter of pups. "Poor wee one." Celeste whispered. She laid her hand gently on the mother dog whose body was cold and lifeless, only one small body showed any sign of life. The Irish wolfhound pup struggled gallantly to live where as his litter mates had failed. She cradled the small body close to her bosom. "Give the cur to me." Margaret grabbed for the pup. "The bitch died yesterday, this one has not had the sense to follow the rest of the litter. I'll just slam it against the stones there and we'll hear no more of its pitiful cries." "Nay! You cannot have him." Celeste turned her back on the mad woman. She would pay dearly for this small act of defiance but could not let the small warrior be harmed. The flat of Margaret's hand caught her soundly on the cheek. Her scar stood out vibrantly against the mark now left by the witch's hand. "You forget yourself." Margaret snarled. "Enough!" Sebastian's fist slammed against the table. "Leave off!!" He stomped angrily across the floor. The rushes crackled beneath his feet. "Lass, take the pup and leave. Your duties are finished for the day." He showed no other sign of the turmoil he was going through on seeing his lady treated so cruelly, but he must not alert anyone of his true feelings for his beautiful Celeste. "Yes, M'Lord." Celeste curtsied and bobbed her head. She never raised her eyes to look at either Sebastian or the Witch 11

Margaret. Slowly, she turned and made a wide arc around the table and out the castle doors. "You show much affection for such a low born bitch, nephew. Have you forgotten the curse? Or maybe the Clan whore cares not if she sleeps with dogs. I should rid us all of the problem before she breeds more of the same." Margaret sneered. Sebastian grabbed her arm as she turned to walk away. He stepped closer and looked down on her from his massive height. "Do you forget whom you are talking with, Aunt? I am laird here and curse or no curse, neither you nor your witch sisters will rule me or mine. The lass means nothing more to me than any other member of the clan. I protect what is mine." The lie tasted bitter on his lips, but if anyone guessed his true feelings for Celeste, he feared for her safety. Margaret jerked her arm from his fierce grip. "Never treat me thusly. Forget you the power that I wield and the pain I can inflict without effort?" She turned and walked toward the small room located behind the buttery. The sisters must be told of the rebellion taking place in their home. But first she had better tend to important matters; must not cause suspicion. She stopped and turned. "I'm sorry, nephew, for speaking to you thusly. I look out only for your welfare. You must be ever vigilant of the curse and never forget the evil it may cause. I am here to serve you and I hope to one day free you so that you may live happily. But until that time arises, you must remember what you are." She turned her head so no one could see her evil smile as she passed through the buttery. 12
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"I'll never forget," he whispered. "I'm living the hell of it daily." He glanced toward the castle doors. Celeste was safe for now but her rebellion was sure to cost her. He shuddered to think of the pain his sweet lass was sure to go through because the aunts would not let this slight go unpunished. He must be vigilant to protect his love. "He becomes stronger. The cur has no respect for our authority." Margaret paced and ranted as Katera stirred the steaming kettle cooking on the hot coals of the stone fireplace. "Should we just kill him and be done with it?" Katera asked. "You know we cannot do so, for his da our dear brother," she sneered, "on his death bed cast a protecting spell of his own. Thanks be to God I happened to over hear his chant." She began quoting, "He whom kills my blessed son shall too succumb to death in the same manner." Katera clapped her hands in glee. "Oh sister, you sound just like him. He was such a milk sap! However did he come from our grand lineage?" Margaret spit on the floor. "The wretched man, even while dying, he had to play the laird with our lives!" She paced to the pot and smelled the boiling brew. "My daughter is not yet of an age to take over the running of the keep, I must..." "What say you?" Katera interrupted. "Your daughter? I too have a daughter or have you forgotten?" "No, not at all sister. I was just ranting, you are by far too prickly; of course our daughters shall rule as we were meant to if not for our brother's wife whelping that cur before having 13

the grace to die after the birthing. He is such a fool, thinking it was his sniveling mother that cast the spell on him to punish the infant for her weakness in the birthing of him. I have fed that belief all these long years and again only moments ago. In his ignorance he believes that as we are the witches of Kilskeagh we will someday find a way to remove the curse." She cackled gleefully. "Little does the cur realize that we strive only to break the protective curse so that we may finally rid ourselves of his presence." "You worry for naught." Katera sprinkled herbs into the black cauldron. "He will do nothing to draw out the beast. We have warned him from infancy. His line will die with him and our daughters will someday rule this clan." She looked to the corner where her infant daughter lay sleeping in a bed of straw. Margaret's daughter sat next to her playing with a doll made from the cobs of corn. "I don't understand why we had to curse Sebastian. I like Sebastian he is nice." Annabelle, the youngest of the three, was simple. Age wise she was only two years younger than Sebastian, but mentally, her mind worked as a child of eight seasons. "You were as much a part of the spell as we Annabelle." "I know the part I played in the spell against Sebastian." She combed her fingers through the corn silk hair of the doll that lay in her lap. Her bottom lip protruded in a child's pout. "I still say I like Sebastian." "We've explained to you before Annabelle; Sebastian must not bear children, for as long as his line lives, we will be nothing but servants. I was the eldest and Katera next in line 14

thus we should have ruled this clan, not Sebastian's father. Sebastian should have had the grace to die when Silas died so tragically from that bad mutton." Margaret cackled. Her joy the day she had poisoned her brother knew no bounds. Of course, the night she killed her husband and Katera's ran a very close second. The stupid clods actually thought they were loved and protected. The Witch's of Kilskeagh needed no man. [Back to Table of Contents]

Chapter 3 **** Celeste sat under a big oak tree, the bark pressing into her back as the sun beat down upon her face. The sweet smell of clover drifted up all around her, the slight breeze blowing her hair. "Hush little one," she cooed to the pup as he lay on his back pushing weakly with his little paws against her hand and suckled from the milk teat she urged him to drink. "Such a good wee warrior." she praised. The crack of a twig was her only warning; she looked up sharply to see who was sneaking up from behind. "You should not be here my lord, someone could see." Still hurt from the morning run in at the castle, she turned her full attention back to the pup. "Hush love, I mean only to see that you are okay after the mishap this morn with my aunt." The pup gave up his suckling and Celeste used a damp cloth to wipe his tummy and genitals gently, mimicking the actions of a mother's licking. "I am fine my lord, do not trouble yourself." Sebastian bent to run his finger along the pup's head. "He's eating well." "Nay, in truth my lord he is not getting enough to sustain him and I fear he will probably follow the same fate as the rest of his litter." 16
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
Sebastian picked up the cloth filled with milk. "What is this you feed him with?" It looked familiar, thin skinned and smooth to the touch. "The tanner let me have it; one of the ewes died giving birth. When he slaughtered her, he let me take the bladder. I soaked it in water and ale to purify it, but I fear all my care will be for naught and he will still perish." "You are so good at this; you deserve to be a mother. That is something I can never give you. You should find someone to love you and give you the family that you deserve. I fear though that I would be unable to allow another to touch what I have come to love." Celeste lifted her head to look up at him, the sun shone strongly at his back. His pain was visible in his facial features. "I would never allow another to touch me, my lord." She shook her head and raked her hand though her hair. Sebastian nudged her face toward his with the tip of finger beneath her chin. "Why do you call me 'my lord'?" he whispered. "Always before it has been m'lord? Why now?" "I know my station, my lord. I am beneath you and must address you as such." "Never!" he argued. He looked to be sure no one was near and eased down beside her. "You are far better than I. I lay in my furs nightly and dream of the sound of my name rolling from your beautiful lips." Her hand trembled as he grasped it and held it tightly. The soft skin and her warmth made his blood pump faster in his veins. He leaned forward and pressed soft kisses along her cheeks, chin and finally her soft lips. 17

Celeste gasped at Sebastian's open show of affection; never before had he shown her any attention in the light of day. She laid the pup in her lap and reached up to grasp his face in her hands. Her tongue reached within to dance with his. Sebastian's heart hammered. His shaft hardened at the feel of Celeste's passion. He had to stop this before it was too late. Her hand was soft along his face down to his neck, a gentle caress. It was too late. The beast reared his head, the hairs on Sebastian's arms, back and neck stood. He could feel his nails and incisors lengthening as his desire built. No, I pray thee just once I would like to see my love's face as I bring us both to pleasure. Aloud he growled. "Run! My love, run now before it is too late." "No Sebastian, Celeste shook her head. "I am not afraid." He closed his eyes not wanting her to see the gold-green glow that he was sure would now be visible. The beast was fighting, clawing to be released. "Run now, as your lord I command it." He pushed away from her even as the beast made a grab for her arm. Celeste cried out in pain as a sharp nail raked across her arm. She grabbed the puppy up in her arms and ran toward her small cottage. "Do not come back to the castle Celeste." he called after her. "I can no longer trust myself." he whispered. Celeste stumbled as she heard his words, pain tearing through her heart. He no longer wanted her, she was an outcast. She picked up speed, the heels of her bare feet 18

hitting against the back of her plaid. The shame she felt was unbearable. **** Sebastian paced across the grounds, a ritual that had started three nights past. Three long days and nights without a single sight of his beloved. His heart mourned the loss, but he knew to stay away from her was best. No longer could he keep the beast at bay, its need was becoming stronger and he did not know if he could keep Celeste safe and never did he want her to see him in such a form. Damn this treacherous curse! It would die with him. A soft glow shown from beneath the door of the stable; perhaps one of the animals was sick mayhap he could offer assistance to Donall, the stable lad. His thoughts were so troubled he would not sleep until dawn was breaking the sky, he might as well be use to someone. It was not, however, Donall who knelt on the dried grasses used for bedding. The sight before him caused him to stumble and grab onto the cold damp rocks. His breath caught and he was afraid to release it and startle the animal she had a hold of. "That's it wee warrior, eat your fill. Such a strong little one." She crooned. The ewe bleated gently and tried to pull away as the pup suckled hungrily on her milk filled teat. Her wee lamb was drinking anxiously on the other. "Hush mama, just a wee bit more." The ewe jumped against Celeste's arm, straining the already tired muscles. She lost her balance and fell head first into the bedding. 19
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"My love, are you hurt?" She turned her head to see Sebastian running to her. Pain shot through her heart. His beautiful face so full of love and concern, yet he had shunned her. "I'm alright m'lord. Do not concern yourself." She rose to her feet and dusted the debris from her plaid while cradling the pup in her other arm. The ewe bleated and moved into the corner of the stall with her little one. "You should not take such chances. I do not wish to see you injured. What is it you are doing here?" he reached her side and brushed the sticks and grass from her hair. "I'm feeding wee Warrior. The mixture was not nourishment enough and his health was failing. He likes to drink from the ewe's teats and has grown much stronger". She held the puppy up to show off his now full belly. Sebastian smiled. "So he has; what a little glutton." He chuckled. She was so beautiful, how could he stay away? He didn't have the strength now that he had seen her again. "I have not seen you in days." His caress along the side of her face caused goose bumps to form along Celeste's arms. She leaned into his hand. "It was your decision m'lord, to send me away." "Do not call me lord. I detest hearing it from your lips." He leaned down and gently kissed her stubborn lips. He knew she was upset and hurt by his refusal to see her, but he knew of no other way to protect her not only from himself but also from the wrath that his aunt continued to thrust upon her day after day. If she stayed away from the keep, she would be out of their reach. 20
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
Celeste returned his kiss, how she had missed him, the feel of his warm breath along her neck, the minty taste as his lips and tongue caressed and entangled with hers. "I have missed you my love," he whispered nibbling his way along the smooth column leading up to the tender lobe of her which he nipped and then tenderly suckled. "And I you." She reached back and entangled her fingers in his long hair along the nape, pulling him closer even as she leaned back into his hardened body. "Please don't deprive us both, why must we suffer?" "Hush. I do not wish to speak of unpleasant things now, let us not waste a second of this precious time that we have alone." His hands sought her waist and reached up to gently unwind the plaid where it crisscrossed over her generous breasts. Anxiously he reached in and sought the treasure hidden beneath. Her nipples were pebbled in anticipation of his touch and he did not deny them. His thumb and index finger plucked the nipple, then slid back and forth across the tip. Celeste groaned at the feelings he was arousing. Already, she could feel herself becoming damp, her body becoming ready to welcome him. "It has been far too long." She pushed her bottom tightly against his hardened shaft. He caressed along her breasts to the center, making small circles down her middle tracing the indentation of her belly button back up to caress again between her breasts, but not touching them. "Sebastian please." she pleaded. 21
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"So impatient." He chuckled and yet again he ran his hand down her flat belly to the junction of her thighs. Lightly he brushed her mound before slipping around back and massaging her bottom then released his hardened shaft. "I wish to take my time and enjoy every moment we have together." He rubbed her hip and around again before seeking her woman's core. She was so soft, warm, wet and inviting. "You are ready for me, lass." "Always Bastian, I long only for you." she groaned, arching back and impaling herself on his manhood. "Careful, lass. I do not wish to hurt you." "Never, it only hurts me to not have you near me." She began to move, pushing against him, then drawing away almost but not quite drawing him out of her body. Again, she moved back against him before drawing all but his tip out. Her body hungering for more, she shoved back harder and Sebastian answered her demands. She was driving him wild. Teasing him, taunting him, his body could take no more. The beast roared to life, His fangs exploded and he bit down hungrily on her shoulder, holding her in place. His hands, claws extended, dug into her waist so that she could not see them. "I'm sorry lass," he whispered as he plunged wildly into her. She was wet and oh so ready, drawing him ever deeper as he tried to control the beast. "Do not be sorry Sebastian just love me." She arched into him as he again sank his teeth dominantly into her shoulder. No longer able to discriminate between man or beast, he pumped into her, once, twice, three times before releasing his hold on her shoulder and throwing his head back in ecstasy. 22
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
He was relieved to hear Celeste to cry out in her pleasure. He wrapped both arms tightly around her waist and pulled them over onto the grass bedding, spooning himself behind her. "Lass, look what I have done to you, I've marked you." He kissed the bruised mark where his fangs had bitten down into her tender flesh, ashamed that he had not had better control. "'Tis fine, nothing more than a love bite. It hurts not at all." She cuddled back against him. She was comfortable and at peace at last for surely he would now let her return to the castle and her duties there. "Shall I return to the castle on the morrow?" "Nay, I thought I made it clear that you are not to ever come back to the castle, not until the curse is broken, I cannot and will not have you near." He pulled away and gained his feet, adjusted his clothing then he reached down and helped her to stand. "I must go before someone comes upon us." He kissed her gently. "Go now, sleep soundly and know that I love you. I love you even though I can never claim you for my own." Celeste rejoiced over his words of love. But her joy dimmed at his stubbornness over the foolish curse. If only he would trust in her love enough to share all of himself. She would prove to him that together they could withstand anything. Until then, there was no hope. He did not care enough to fight for a life with her. She had to face the truth; she had no future with Sebastian. "As you wish." She moved to the corner where the puppy lay by her belongings. She rolled herself in the plaid and lay down snuggled in the bedding with the wee pup. 23
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"What game are you playing? Go to your home. I will watch to see that no harm comes to you on your journey." Surely she knew better than to sleep in the stable. It was not safe nor seemly for her to do so all in order for the pup to eat regularly. "The pup will be fine until the morn. He may eat his fill after you break your fast." Celeste had lost weight. The care she was giving the orphaned pup was interfering with her own health. Celeste gazed at Sebastian from her place in the corner of the stable. She had not wanted him to find out, but his coming to the stable this night had changed that. "I'm not playing a game. I now sleep here in this tiny corner much akin to the other stable animals." Sebastian was shocked. "Surely not. What's the meaning of this?" Was the lass trying trickery with him? Not his Celeste... never had she deceived him. Per chance she had not forgiven him for keeping away. "There is no trickery." She said quietly. The shame she felt quickly turned to anger. "You did this to me, m'lord." She saw him shake his head and her anger grew. She threw the kilt from her body and rose to her feet. "Ay, you did m'lord. You sent me from the castle, from your home. I was no longer allowed to take my place within the clan. You shamed me. My step-father will no longer allow me in my home. He believes, as does the rest of the clan, that I have angered you and so I have shamed myself and my family. I am dead to him and must find my own way." 24
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
He had caused this. Celeste was suffering because of his actions. "Never did I wish this to happen. I sent you away to keep you safe; to protect you from shame." He stepped forward to comfort her. "No." Celeste held up her hand. "Please do not. If you care, if ever you loved me, do not come any closer." She lived like an animal sleeping in animal bedding, living off the scraps of food that neither man nor beast would eat. She never wanted him to learn the full truth of how she was now forced to live. "I will make this right, love." Her step-father would pay for treating her in such a manner. "No one will be allowed to treat you in such a cruel fashion." "It is done. You will not openly show your feelings for me with the clan. What else are they to believe but that I have somehow displeased you? No, there is nothing to be done. Please, just let me be." He could hear the hurt in her whispered words, not wishing to upset her further he reluctantly agreed. "As you wish. I will no longer seek your affection. Find someone... someone whom can give you everything you deserve. Be happy my love." He turned and left the stable. Celeste wiped the tears from her cheeks. He was gone. She could now cry and let loose all the emotions stored since he had made such beautiful love with her. She had known it would be the last time that he lay with her and had savored every touch, every caress and whispered words of love. She would store the feelings of love in her heart, they would have to last her the rest of her life. 25

Chapter 4 **** "Look at her, walking around with no care in the world. The lazy serf! She cannot even make a living as the keep whore as no man will touch her." Margaret watched as the girl walked across the keep grounds, the orphaned pup always at her heels. How she hated the both of them. "Our own laird has tossed her out of the keep." Celeste knew that Margaret was watching. She could hear the hate filled words as they were carried on the wind. She was beyond caring; she lived each day as it came; living only for the love of the sweet puppy that followed her so faithfully. She had nothing and no one else. How had she come to this? She had become a whining, pitiful human being and she didn't like it. Where had her pride gone, her joy in living? Somehow, someway she had to make a life for herself. "Come Warrior," she continued to walk; not paying any mind to the hate filled words being thrown her way. "Filth, she's nothing and should not be allowed to foul our land. She's nothing but a whore and should be stoned." Celeste stopped as the laughter from Margaret's followers reached her ears. Hateful words did not bother her but she would not be laughed at. She would no longer hang her head in shame. Proudly she turned her head to stare directly at the offenders, her chin raised high in defiance. 27
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"How dare you challenge me!" Margaret grabbed the walking stick that lay upon the stones leading to the castle doors. "You are nothing!" She stomped angrily down the steps, spittle flying from her lips with each step she took across the hard packed earth. The walking stick swung swiftly in her hand. Celeste braced herself against the pain that was sure to come. Warrior growled beside her, the hair standing up on his back. "Hush boy." She reached down and touched him lightly on top of his head. "Stop that beast or I'll end his life right here." Margaret hefted the stick high into the air. Celeste bravely stepped forward. "You will not touch him." Margaret stopped, shocked. "You dare to defy me?" No one had ever spoken to her in such a manner. "I'll no longer cower in your presence or any other. I have nothing to be ashamed of." "Have you not? Our own laird could not stand the sight of you and so banned you from the castle." "Oh nay, witch; he keeps me away to protect me from you and your vile sisters." Anger had drawn her nose to nose with the woman and in such a state, she had spoken words best left unspoken. Sebastian hearing raised voices stepped out onto the castle steps. "What goes on here?" Margaret turned. The beast's stance and the blush of his cheeks told of his attitude; now was not the time to push her cause. "I am fighting a snake nephew. An ugly poisonous viper that needs to be put in its place. I only wish to rid the 28

land of such a venomous creature." She brushed her stick against the ground hitting Celeste in the fleshy part of her calf, grinning triumphantly as blood trickled down her leg. "Snake you say? I have not seen any sign of such vermin." He moved to step down and have a look. "Nay nephew, stay put. Trust me, there is most definitely vermin on your lands, but do not fear. I will take care of it." She leaned in closer to Celeste, "He will not always be around to protect you." "I'm not afraid of you and need no man's protection. I can take care of myself." The witch laughed a loud cackling laugh. "We shall see!" She turned and marched back across the grounds. Sebastian watched as his aunt made her way back to the Castle steps. "It is glad I am that I found you nephew, a messenger arrived from the chief of Gallaway." "What is it that Ulick Burke requires, Aunt?" He didn't turn to give Margaret his full attention until Celeste turned the corner to enter the stable. Margaret had been up to no good and Celeste would surely be the brunt of some punishment had not he come out to investigate. "Nephew, are you listening to me. What do you find so interesting at the stable?" "Yes, of course, I'm listening to you. I listen to the concerns of all of my people. I asked what Burke requires?" His displeasure with her disrespect was certainly noticeable by the bite of his words as he frowned down upon her. 29
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
Margaret backed up a step, Sebastian was a big man, there was no doubt, and she must learn to mask her hatred of him, for surely he could split her in two if she were to push him too far. "I meant no disrespect, as I was saying apparently there is a skirmish of some kind at Grange Castle. The messenger did not go into detail, only to say that you and your men were needed." "Then we shall leave at once. Donall!" He looked to the stable master, "Ready my mount and have the men made aware that we ride out within the hour." "As you wish, m'lord." Donnall ran back to the stables shouting orders to the men in the meadow below. [Back to Table of Contents]

Chapter 5 **** Margaret stood on the stones leading to the castle. She watched as the beautiful girl walked along the path dragging an old string for the dog she so loved. Soon the devil would return, the time to act was now. The tinker had not yet agreed to the trade but she would soon have him begging to take the serf. "Girl," she stepped off the high stone and waved. "Come here." Celeste looked up from playing with Warrior, her one and only joy in life now that she was alone. The witch was calling, she had been pleasantly surprised when the witches had let her be, but it looked as if things were about to change. "What do you wish Margaret?" Celeste looked at her feet as she talked for to stare into Margaret's eyes would be thought an act of defiance. "You are to leave the castle at once." She smiled in glee to see the shocked look on the whore's face. "Leave? But this is my home. Why would I leave?" Celeste was shocked. What game was the witch playing? "Not any longer. You have been banished." Celeste shook her head. "No, no this cannot be. Sebastian would never..... "SILENCE!" Do not even begin to guess what our laird would suggest. It was his idea that you be sent away. Why do 31

you think he has been gone these last days, you were to be gone before his return. It has taken me more time than I should have wasted to find someone to take on the chore of caring for you." The tinker coming around the corner from the kitchen heard the argument. "I never said I would take...." Margaret held her hand up to stop his words. "Girl ready yourself. You'll leave either with the tinker or alone, but you will leave these lands." Celeste stepped closer. "You cannot make me leave my people." Margaret raised her hand; the slap solid and with force took Celeste across the face knocking her to the ground. "I can and will do so." A foot into her stomach had her rolling into a tight ball, gripping Warrior in her arms as Margaret's pent up fury continued blow after blow after blow. Blood flowed freely from a cut where her cheek hit a rock when she fell. Celeste never made a sound, not giving the witch the satisfaction of knowing how much she was hurting. The tinker ran forward, never had he seen a lass survive such a beating. He had to do something to help her. "If you injure the lass, I cannot take her with me. She must be able to walk there is no way to carry her. She must be able to travel." He pushed the mad woman away and reached down to help the lass to her feet. The pup growled, bearing his teeth in warning. "Lass, call him off. Please let me help you." 32
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"Hush Warrior," Celeste whispered. She gripped the man's hand and let him pull her unsteadily to her feet. She wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth and looked up at him with big, beautiful eyes. Eyes that he could truly fall in love with. Celeste knew that she was defeated. "Thank you, I'll just collect my things and we can be on our way. Come Warrior." She turned and started down the rocky path to collect her things. Margaret was not done with her torture she could not wait to give the killing blow. "The cur stays here. You will take nothing from this land when you leave. It all belongs to the clan which you are no longer a part of." Celeste was stunned. "What of my clothes?" "The tinker will supply you with everything you need." Celeste dropped to her knees. "Let Warrior come with me. You do not even like him" Tears ran unashamed down her face as she pleaded. Margaret leaned over the pathetic girl whom knelt begging and groveling in the dirt as well she should. "I know, but you do my dear and the thought of your beloved animal in my care shall haunt you and that makes me very, very happy." Celeste turned to the one kind face she saw in the crowd. "Tinker please, please...we must not leave without Warrior. He is my one true friend. Please, we must take him with us." He shook his head. How he wished he could honor her pleas. Her eyes begged him. "I'm sorry lass, the pup must stay behind. I can ill afford to feed myself and now you. I just cannot have another to care for." 33
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"No I cannot leave without him." She ran toward her beloved pet. Margaret turned and waved her arms to encompass the entire walls of the castle. "Men, draw your swords and if she tries to take anything, kill the thief and the animal. She no longer belongs at Kilskeagh." Celeste looked around frantically for anyone to help her, one kind face, someone whom would come forward to offer her aid. But, alas even her step-father stood with sword raised against her. She was defeated. Donall hearing the noise came running from the stable. He pushed through the crowd of men and swords. He must do all he could to protect the lass for when Laird Sebastian heard of this, someone was going to pay. "Lass," he whispered, grabbing her hand and squeezing until she looked up at him, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Please lass... give Warrior to me. I swear on all that is Holy that I shall take good care of him; no one will harm him as long as I have breath in my body. You have to do this for that evil woman will carry out her threat and kill him just to cause you pain." Celeste nodded knowing the man was telling the truth, she knew the stable master to be a gentle man. "I'm leaving my most prized possession in your care Donall." "I won't let you down lass." His words were not heard for the young girl had turned, and with a gut wrenching cry of pain, ran down the rocky slope and out the gates of the castle. The mournful cries of the young dog were enough to bring a grown man to his knees. 34

"Tinker, leave some bobbles on the stones... it's the least you can do. After all, I have given you a plentiful gift." She cackled merrily before turning and shouting over the devastating, lonely cries of the dog jumping at the end of the strap he was tethered with."Shut the cur up or I'll chop him up and we'll be feeding him to the pigs. And that goes for any of you that breathe a word of what was done here." Margaret turned and fairly skipped up the steps and through the castle doors. Sebastian would never learn the truth of what happened here today and soon her sweet girl would rule Clan Kilskeagh. [Back to Table of Contents]

Chapter 6 **** The tinker placed some baubles on the stones, turned and looked at the mournful beast howling, picked up the handles on his small cart and pushed it slowly out of the castle walls. What was he to do now with the waif girl? He found her on her knees in the rich green grass that grew beneath a big, full leafed tree. He stopped his cart and walked slowly to kneel beside her. Gently he laid his hand on her shuddering shoulder. "Come lass, we must be gone from this place. We have a great distance to travel before night fall." He stood and extended his hand to her. "Are you able to walk?" She had run out the walls of the castle, but hurt and pride would carry her only so far. If she were severely injured, he knew not what he would do. Celeste grabbed his hand and allowed him to help her to her feet. She wiped her nose and cheeks on the sleeve of her gown. "Thank you, Tinker...." "Josef." "What..?" "My name is Josef. We will be traveling together. You cannot keep calling me Tinker." He smiled tenderly and squeezed her hand gently before releasing her. Celeste nodded. "Josef, thank you for being so kind to me. I know not what you expect from me, I am not a whore no 36

matter what may have been told to you by those within those walls." He placed his finger over her lips. "Hush, lass. I expect nothing more than you to travel with me and may perhaps cook meals for me. But lass, are you sure you wish to leave? Surely you have family or a clan member that will take you in." "No, there is no one." Celeste glanced back toward the castle. Never again would she see her beloved Sebastian for she knew the truth. He had sent her away, not because he did not want her, but to protect her from the witches and also from his beast. A foolish notion to be sure, but Sebastian believed whole heartedly in the curse and that had finally let the aunts win. For in his belief, he had lost the chance of love and happiness. The only thing to do was try to live out her existence without him. She took a deep breath and nodded. "I can be of help to you, Josef. I ask only that we never speak of this time or what happened here today. Let us be gone from this place." She winced and took a step then another, one foot in front of the other, away from the only life she had ever known. The mournful cries grew fainter the further she walked from her home. Chapter 7 **** The horse made the steep climb up to the keep. Donall took the reins as Sebastian dismounted. "Welcome home, Laird. Good hunting?" Sebastian dismounted, disgust obvious as he raked his hands through his hair. "Hunting... it wasn't even a good feud. Skirmish is more like and one that turned my stomach." "Laird?" Donall was confused by his laird's attitude, a feud usually put all of the men in a celebratory mood; they liked nothing better than knocking heads. "Burke of Clanricard was living in open adultery with O'Kelly's wife. Had I known this the reason for the feud, I'd have left him to find his own way. A man should not dip his shaft into a well that belongs to another." "You did not fight alongside Burke, Laird?" "Nay, for the fight was over before I arrived. The Gallowglass fought on both sides, damn Scott's warriors swinging their axes." He paced still leading his horse. "A new weapon was used, great smoking guns, the battle lasted only one day and there were many dead. Over four thousand good men died because of one's need to dip his sword. Mounds now lay heaped around the summit of Knockdoe where we laid the dead to rest." "What of Burke? Does he still lay with O'Kelly's woman?" 38
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
Sebastian stopped. "Burke." He spat on the ground. "The man caused the deaths and, in his defeat he ran, his entire clan has faded away. O'Kelly's wife was found with a blade through her black heart. It is not known who gave the killing blow. O'Kelly refused to bury her and left the body where it lay." "God's breath." Donall whispered and crossed himself. The woman would not move on into the afterlife, shamed in life and now in death. Sebastian inclined his head. "Feed him well, he has traveled far." He had been gone a fortnight, but it had not been time enough to make him forget his love. Perhaps she had found someone new while he was away. The pain of watching Celeste have bairns and grow old with another man was unbearable, yet he knew it was the best for all concerned. He watched as Donall made his way to the stable, a skeletal form lying upon the ground caught his eye and looked very familiar. He walked slowly forward praying with each step that he was wrong that the heap of bones and hide was not Celeste's beloved dog. "Donall, what is the meaning of this? Where is the pup's mistress?" Surely Celeste would not neglect him so. He knelt down where the young pup lay so lifeless. "What ails him?" "I know not, Laird. I have tried everything to get him to eat. I think he is dying of a broken heart. Since the lass left him in my care, he has ate little and day by day I have watched painfully as the young one has slowly faded away. "What mean you since his mistress left? Where is Celeste?" Sebastian ran his hand carefully over the dog's head. His 39

brown eyes showed no life, they rolled slightly back into his head; his nose was warm to the touch. Sebastian pried open Warrior's mouth, his gums were pale, not a good sign, the pup was dying. "Donall, lad you have yet to answer my question. Where is Celeste?" Donall swallowed, his adam's apple prominent. No way did he want to be the unfortunate soul to tell his laird the terrible deed his aunt had done to the sweet lass Celeste. Some viscous women from the castle called her whore and told of her lying with the laird. He cared not. Mistress Celeste had always shown him kindness which was why he had volunteered to care for her pet. "I'm sorry, Laird, she has left the clan." Donall left off the telling of how such thing had come about, it should not fall on his head to tell the dark deed. Of course his laird was not of the same mind. Sebastian came to his feet. "Explain." "I'm not sure I am the best person to answer your questions, Laird. I know not where to begin the telling." "The beginning Donall. Tell me all that has transpired since I left for Burke's, leave nothing out." He crossed his arms, legs spread wide as he waited for the tale. "It is ..... Well... your aunt, Laird...." "What has my aunt to do with Celeste's leaving." Sebastian stepped forward. Donall held up a hand in halt. "Please, Laird I beg of you, let me finish the telling before you question me." 40
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"As you wish," He backed up a step and nodded his head for Donall to proceed. The sooner he heard the tale he would understand why Celeste left her beloved pet. "I know only the ending Laird. The tinker had come to pedal his wares. Your Aunt Margaret offered a trade. There is no easy way to say this, Laird, except to tell you she traded the lass away for boggles, nothing that was wanted or needed in the clan. She traded her away. The lass tried to take her pet, but was told that it belonged to the clan. If she attempted to take the pup with her, it would be killed. Your aunt went so far as to have the men draw their swords." "Surely someone tried to stop them?" "Nay, her own father stood with sword raised against the lass." Betrayed. He had been betrayed by his own. Worse, Celeste had suffered from the betrayal. They would pay for the hurt they caused his beloved. "My Lord if I may?" Donall interrupted. "What is it Donall?" Sebastian squatted in the dirt and gently scratched the dog behind his ears. Surely he would not make it through the week. How had this atrocity happened? "I was thinking if we mayhap had something of the lass's, something with her smell, perhaps the wee dog would be comforted and perhaps partake in some food." "That may work Donall," Sebastian gave the dog one last pat before getting to his feet. "Tis a shame that Celeste left nothing behind, I know she did not have much so am sure she gathered what meager belongings she had when she took her leave." 41
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
Donall was shaking his head. "Nay Laird, she was not allowed to take a thing, not a stitch was she given. I dared to search, even without your word, for something, anything that might belong to her as my concern for the pup was so great. I promised the young lass to care for her pet and I feel I have failed her." "What say you? She was not allowed to take her belongings?" "Your aunt forbade her from taking anything, stating it belonged to the clan. She went on to threaten the whole of the clan if we breathed a word of what transpired. I'm sorry, Laird, but I take my orders from you and not from her." Sebastian raised his hand to his forehead as if to rub away the ache that had started. His aunts had overstepped themselves and needed to be dealt with, but the concern for Celeste's pet over rode everything for the time being. "Go behind the stables, a rock juts out of the soil in the hillside." "Yes, I know the spot which you speak." Donall nodded. "Celeste kept her belongings there for safekeeping. I'm sure you will find what you need there. Bring it all Donall, use what you need for Warrior and store the rest for safe keeping. I pray to God that our idea works." Donall took off running. "As you wish, Laird, it will be done." **** Sebastian's boot heels rang with each angry step he took up the stones to the castle doors. Margaret's treachery ate at his belly leaving a bitter taste in his mouth, rage consumed 42

him. He wanted to grab her by the throat and choke the life from her body. He called for the beast. Why could it not arise now? Now when he could turn loose its power, relish in it as he tore the witch limb from limb. "Surely he is dead." She whispered to Katera as she stirred the pot simmering over the burning coals. "For we have heard nothing and the battle could not last this long." Katera looked over her shoulder as she heard the doors fly wide and hit the stones. Sebastian walked to the corner where a pile of useless trinkets and baubles lay as if in a shrine. He knew where they had come from. "What is the meaning of this?" He pointed to the corner. Margaret whirled in surprise, her hands going to her bosom. "Ah nephew, you have returned!" Silently she whispered to Katera, "How unfortunate." Why could the bastard not have died in battle? Sebastian stepped closer. "I ask again, what is this?" Margaret blinked innocently. "You do not like it? For I fear when I bargained with the tinker, I took advantage of the poor retch and got the better of the trade." Sebastian was livid. "You dare to mock me? I know of the devilish deeds you performed while I was away." Margaret was not worried no one would defy her, surely not, for all knew that she was capable of carrying out her threat. "I'm sure I don't know what has you so upset nephew." He stepped closer, poking his finger into her chest. "You will not lie to me." 43
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
Margaret took a step back; swallowing back the fear for somehow Sebastian did truly know what had transpired in his absence. "Nephew, I was simply getting rid of the vermin. You had already banished her from your home I just followed your example and made sure that she could never darken our doors again." "You forget yourself witch. I am Laird of Kilskeagh Castle. I say who goes and who stays." "You threw her from the castle. Have you forgotten?" Margaret sneered. "I forget nothing. Celeste is and will always be a valued member of this clan. "Connor!" He yelled to the young serving boy lounging against the far wall. "Bundle up that rubbage and take it to my horse. It will be returned." "Returned? What say you? I bargained for those treasures." Sebastian whirled around, temper flaring. He grabbed onto her arms. "You dare to argue with your laird? You bargained away that which was not yours, a life not some simple bauble or piece of cloth, but a human being. You talk of treasures you threw away the one great treasure from this place and I'm going after her." "Nay, you cannot. Have you forgotten the curse?" "Do not nay say me, Aunt. You have long been disrespectful of me, but this last cut I cannot see past. You have overstepped one too many times. As laird, I think it best you be gone from this place. Pack up and leave at once!"
44
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"Oh nay please, Laird...my babe." Katera cried. "She is sickly and cannot travel. We are mixing a remedy now, surely you do not mean it." "Aye, I do mean it, I'm sorry for the babe, you may stay a day or two, but I want you all gone before my return." "You will be sorry nephew. Mark my words you will pay for this blasphemy against your own kin." Margaret grabbed her plaid and whirled marching to the buttery. "I don't think so. Aunt, I'm only sorry I didn't carry out these orders sooner. You men, see that they are gone within the week." Two guards sitting at the tables drinking ale nodded. "Aye 'twill be done, Laird." Never have they liked the witches, fearing any retribution from a small infraction. Sebastian walked to the table, exhaustion was taking over, he had not slept in days nor had a substantial amount of food. "Here's some ale, Laird, mama is bringing you a dish." Megan the cook's young daughter curtsied and hurried away. He nodded his head and drank thirstily. "I'm leaving as soon as I ease my hunger." He looked at his warriors sitting beside him at the table. "How is it that you let such an atrocity take place in my absence? Surely you knew that I would not abide it." Ashamed but honor bound, the men stared back at their laird. "'Bastian, she gave an order for us to kill the wee lass if she did not leave your lands. You know the superstition the men carry about the witches." 45
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"Aye and I know how vindictive the three can be, 'tis not your fault, 'tis mine. I have allowed them free run of my home for far too long." He tore into the leg of mutton on his plate, the meat warm and juicy fairly melted in his mouth. He ate hungrily finishing off a hunk of cheese and loaf of warmed bread. "I must take my leave. I know not when I will return as I do not know how far I must travel to find the lass." "We will look after things in your absence, Laird; your orders will be obeyed." Colin stood and walked with his laird. "It's working just as we hoped, Laird." Donall called out as he saw Sebastian walking across the Bailey. "Just look," he said excitedly. "I found the lass's clothing just where you said they would be. I kept this here plaid and stored the rest in the stables for safe keeping." Sebastian took the plaid from Donall and held it close to his face. Breathing in deeply, he closed his eyes as the sweet smell of Celeste filled his lungs. Tears burned behind his eyes. Oh how he had missed the smell of her., the touch of her soft lips, the feel of her warm body clenching around him. "Do you see how he follows it, Laird?" Donall's voice brought him out of his pleasurable thoughts. He glanced down at the dog. "Aye, he does seem more alert, but will he eat?" Donall chuckled. "Oh he already has, I only let him have small bits as his belly may not handle more. I will have to feed him a little many times a day for him to grow stronger." "Nay Donall, I will have to take over that chore. Pack what supplies I will need, wrap him in the plaid and place him on my mount. We are going to bring his mistress home." 46
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
Donall smiled. "Well done, Laird. It will take me but a moment to get the supplies together." He turned to the stables whistling a tune, happy that he had not broken his promise to the lass. Sebastian knelt by the dog, plaid in his hand. "What say you, laddie? Shall we go find your mistress?" The dog gave a soft woof and grabbed the material from his lap with his teeth pulling it up against him and laying his head upon it, his eyes pleading. "Aye lad, I know how you feel. We have a long, lonely journey ahead of us. I had better get you fixed up or your mistress is sure to take some skin from my hide." Warrior licked Sebastian's hand gave a contented sigh and closed his eyes. "I have supplies, Laird." Donall called as he came from the stable. Sebastian looked over his shoulder but 'twas not Donall he was focused on. "Get him ready. I have one last chore to perform." He stood and started toward the ale house. His long strides carrying him closer to his quarry and with each step his anger grew. He grabbed the man by the shoulder and swung him around. "How could you not protect her?" Sebastian drew back his arm and let his fist fly hitting Gavin squarely on the jaw. He dropped to the ground. "Step-father or not, it was your duty to protect her." He stood straddle over the man, not allowing him to get up.

"Laird." Gavin wiped the blood from his lip with the back of his hand. "Surely you care not what happens to the little whore?" "How dare you!" Sebastian let out a battle cry. "Do not ever speak such a blasphemy again!" He stepped down hard on the man's throat. "If ever I hear such filth spill from your mouth again, I will gut you." Gavin lay back on the ground, his eyes bulging from his head, so scared that a puddle pooled around him as his bladder let loose. Sebastian looked down in disgust. "You sicken me, you are not worthy of her. For your treatment of her, I offer you the same. If you do not like my conditions, you can get the hell off my lands." "What say you?" Gavin whimpered. "I'm saying, pack your things and get out of your cottage. No longer shall you have a place to call your own." "But Laird, where shall I live, sleep?" "I care not. Did you care where the lass stayed when you kicked her out of her home?" He pressed his foot harder into the man's throat. "Be gone from the cottage within the hour. Donall has earned the right to have a place of his own and the cottage is close enough to the stables that it will work out well for him." He removed his foot and turned away, he'd wasted enough time on the man, "Donall the cottage is yours, kick that no good son of a bitch out into the dirt." "As you wish, Laird. Good hunting." Donall threw the reins to Sebastian. 48

Chapter 8 **** "How do you fare, lass?" Josef called. Twilight was fast approaching and the lass was falling further and further behind. He knew she must be in great pain and from the flushed color of her cheeks, he feared she was running a fever. Celeste tried to hurry her steps until she grew level with Josef for she knew that she was slowing him down. He had been so kind to her these past days. "I am fine, Josef. My, but 'tis beautiful here." Never had she seen anything like the lush valleys of green grass or the pretty little blue flowers covering the hills. "I have never traveled far from Kilskeagh. This is truly a wonderful sight." Josef smiled. "I'm glad you like it, lass. Aye, it is beautiful, but nothing compared to your sweet smile. 'Tis glad I am to finally see it." "I've not felt much like smiling, but tis hard to be blue with such wonder before us." She spread her arms wide and turned in a circle. "I know that you're hurting lassie. We've not much further to go before we can rest for the night, but I fear it will be full dark before we reach our camp." He wanted to be near fresh water, the lass needed to relax and a cool bath would help to bring her temperature down. 50
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"I'm sorry Josef; I know that you could travel much faster without me to slow you down. But, please do not try to flatter me with lies of my beauty. I know that I am ugly, having been told many times by those around me." She touched the scar that ran down the side of her cheek, a painful reminder of her life at Kilskeagh. She pushed on, taking one slow step after another. Her ribs hurt something awful and she had checked and noticed the dark bruises along her stomach and legs when last she had relieved herself. The headache which had plagued her for days was getting worse; it seemed to pound in rhythm with each step she took. All she wanted to do was curl up in a ball and sleep. "I know my fate and I am just happy that you are kind enough to care for me and allow me to stay with you." The pathway began to blur; she stumbled but kept her feet. Josef stopped and Celeste followed, relieved to have a moment to rest. "Lass, I have been many places and have seen many beautiful lasses. Believe me, I speak the truth when I talk of your beauty." He wrapped his hand around hers and drew it down and away from the scar she had been tracing. He traced its length with his other hand. "This mark is a sign of bravery." Celeste began to shake her head. "Let me finish. You have withstood many trials, lassie, and survived. You not only survived, but you did it with a kind and pure heart that in itself is beautiful." Celeste scoffed and continued to walk. "You give me too much credit, Josef. I was just too stubborn and stupid to let them win. Look at me, what do I have? Oh I'm alive, that much is true, but to really live is to conquer, to reach out and 51

grab onto all your hopes and dreams." She turned to look at him. "I am alive, Josef, and for that I thank you, but me beautiful," she gave a small smile. "I think you are full of blarney." She turned away, her toe caught on a stone, but she righted herself, wincing as the pain shot through her side and up through her body and head at the sudden movement. "Easy lass." Josef pushed the cart easily beside her. "I'm fine, don't fret, we must reach our destination before 'tis too late so that I can fix you a fine meal. 'Tis the least I can do to repay you your kindness." "You've no need to repay me, your companionship is enough." He'd enjoyed the days with the sweet lass, never before realizing how lonely he truly was. The path blurred, Celeste wiped at her eyes with the back of her hand. She blinked repeatedly to clear her sight. "Josef, I cannot seem..." She never finished her sentence. "Lassie!" Josef saw her teetering and swept her up into his arms before she could hit the ground. Her strength had finally given out and the lass weighed next to nothing. Years of pushing the cart for miles had strengthened his muscles. "Let us get you settled somewhere safe. I'll return for the cart." He talked knowing that she heard not a word for the young lass had fainted dead away, her body so warm to the touch that he feared for her life. "Forgive me lass if I cause you pain but I must get you settled quickly." He jostled her higher into his arms, grabbed a pouch from the cart and took off at a run. His limbs pumped as he ate up the distance to the secluded spot by the water's edge. 52

The beast was coming, must run faster, his warm breath brushed the back of her neck. Curiosity as well as fear had her turning to look. Flames shot from his eyes, saliva dripping from his fangs landing on her shoulder. "No!" she screamed, thrashing her head. "Shh, lass. You are safe." Gently he removed her gown. Slowly he peeled the worn garment away from her too thin body. He was shocked to discover how badly she was injured. "Ah lassie. Why did you not say something? You suffered in silence." He felt guilty for pushing so hard to leave Kilskeagh behind them. Cool, soothing hands caressed her body, up her legs, and belly, over her breasts, neck and finally again along her forehead. She sighed and relaxed as a peaceful sleep reclaimed her. Josef continued his ministrations knowing she would not sleep long before the fever roared to life bringing the nightmares. He dipped the cloth in cool water and bathed Celeste's battered body. Golden eyes glowed from the darkness. Snarling whimpers and howls echoed on the rocks surrounding her. "'Bastian!" She screamed and began to run. The beast gave chase. "No!" She yelled as claws reached to grab her. She ran faster. "Stay away! **** "What is it boy? Do you smell something?" The dog whimpered and barked softly, his tail wagging. Terrified screams echoed through the night breaking the stillness. 53

Sebastian kicked his horse to get it to move faster. He was bone weary and ready to stop and rest for the night. If not for Warrior's uneasiness, he would not have pushed this long into the night and would no doubt have missed helping someone in terrible trouble. A soft glowing flame from the campfire illuminated a man straddling someone, her screams penetrated the night. There was a man holding her down securely as she thrashed and tried to break free of his hold. Sebastian leaped from his horse. He ran to the struggling couple and struck the man soundly in the face with his right boot. "You bastard, the lass is begging you to stop! Only an animal forces himself on an unwilling woman." "Sebastian! No! Stop! Help me!" whispered pleas caused him to turn and look at the lass thrashing wildly on the ground. "Celeste?" he said softly, as he dropped to his knees beside her. An excited yip came from the dog as it bounded from the horse's back and landed gracefully on the dirt packed ground. Warrior bounded on an uneven gate to reach his mistress's side. The man on the ground rose slowly to his feet and wiped the blood from his mouth. He bowed at the waist. "My Lord, Sebastian . Please believe it is not as it seems. I would never dishonor the lass." Sebastian never took his eyes from Celeste's sweet face. "How is it you know who I am?" 54
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"Laird Sebastian, I know this for there can be no other that would travel this distance and bring that loyal companion back to this sweet lass." He nodded toward the dog whining and licking Celeste's face. Sebastian looked up; tears streamed unashamedly down his cheeks. He touched Celeste's face tenderly. "She is ailing? You were not forcing yourself upon her." "Nay." Josef stepped closer. "She has been ill three days now. Her fever rages and she calls out in terrible dreams." "I am sorry that I misunderstood." Sebastian picked up the damp cloth and dipped it into the container filled with water. "Hush, lass." He began wiping her face. He pulled the blanket down and cleansed her neck and above her breasts with the cool cloth. Her pale skin seemed iridescent in the moonlight. "She is too thin." Her bones almost protruded from her skin. "Aye." Josef agreed. "She has grieved for her losses." He looked at both Sebastian and the dog who now lay curled tightly beneath the lass's arm. Even in sleep the lass seemed to know that her beloved pet had been returned to her for even now she lay more content and comfortable in her sleep. "What ails her?" Sebastian asked. He again laid his palm along her scarred cheek. His need to touch her was impossible to ignore. Damn the consequences. He cared not if the tinker could read his feelings. "She was well beaten at the hands of your kin. She was bloodied and bruised, then everything that she loved was taken from her." Josef let his hatred show, uncaring if he angered the man now showing such concern. Sebastian had not protected the sweet lass when she needed him. 55
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"I know what my family did to her; they have been taken care of. I have brought your possessions back to you." He pulled the blanket back over her. "Never again will they harm her." Josef stood his ground for he cared about the lass who had lay claim to his heart. "I don't want them. It was never about the trade and you know it." His hands fisted at his sides so angered that the man would think he would trade a human being for foolish cloths and baubles. "And what of you, Laird? For they were not the only ones to harm the lass." "Josef, no." Celeste whispered. She had lain still listening to the two men talking. She had known the feel of Sebastian's hands on her body the moment he had touched her. The tenderness of his hands roaming up and down her body, it had taken all her will power not to betray that she was indeed awake. But, she needed to know what he was doing here, for her heart could not take anymore. "Celeste, you are awake?" Sebastian brushed the damp curls of hair from her face. "Aye, awake and thirsty." "I'll get it." Josef walked to the rocks and retrieved the cup he had filled earlier. "Here you are lass." He handed the cup filled with cool spring water to Sebastian. "I will go fix something for you to eat. You need to regain your strength." "Thank you, Josef." she called as Sebastian put a hand on her back to help her into a sitting position and with his other brought the cup to her dry, cracked lips. She drank thirstily. Josef watched them as he prepared a light meal. He carried his bounty back to the couple sitting so intimately, so 56

comfortable together. In all the time he and Celeste had spent together, she still was not at ease with him. "Lass, here is some cheese and bread; eat slowly as not to become sick." He knelt and placed the bundle on her lap, cupped her cheek in his hand and gently stroked it. "'Tis glad I am to see your beautiful eyes so clear and free of fever." He stood and walked back to his cart. Sebastian watched Celeste watch Josef. Jealousy rose within him, the thought of his beautiful Celeste with another man tore at his heart. "You care for him." Celeste turned back to Sebastian. "He has been good to me." She took a bite of the cheese he offered. "Thank you for bringing Warrior to me." She gave the dog a hunk of bread which he gobbled hungrily. Exhausted she lay back down burying her hand in the hair at the back of Warrior's head stroking him. "He is so thin." "Aye, he would not eat. Poor Donall was at a loss and feeling as though he had failed you." He set the cup of water down for the pup to drink his fill. "'Twas not Donall's fault. I am grateful to him. No one else, not even my father stepped forward to help me." She picked at the blanket covering her, ashamed to admit that not one person in the clan cared enough to protect her. Sebastian brought her chin up with the tip of his finger. "Donall has been rewarded for his deeds." He wiped the tears from her face. "The others have been dealt with as well. The witches are gone."

Celeste glanced up sharply. "Surely not, Sebastian they are your blood." Always before he had overlooked anything they might do out of loyalty to the family. He shook his head. "No more, Love, do I lay claim to them. They cut all ties the moment they ordered my men to kill you." He looked toward the cart and the glowing fire where Josef sat eating his evening meal. "They traded you away, lass. Never will I allow them to overtake my clan. Your father too has been dealt with, he has no honor and does not deserve to call you daughter. Things will be different now; this is my pledge to you. We will leave in the morn. Will you be able to ride?" No answer came. "Celeste?" He turned to see that exhaustion had claimed her and she once again slept, fever free and, God willing, nightmare free. [Back to Table of Contents]

Chapter 9 **** The fire was warm, throwing off an orange glow on the stones that surrounded the small campsite. Sebastian rubbed his hands together as if to warm them. "You know I cannot allow you to keep her." Josef glanced to where Celeste lay sleeping, the too skinny dog curled up snuggly against her. The yearning showed plainly on his face as he looked back to Sebastian. "She was never mine to keep. I just kept her safe until you arrived. She never gave up on you, not one unkind word of you was mentioned. Not even when your aunt swore to her that you are the one that wished her banished. The lass has a kind heart and is loyal without fault." Sebastian nodded. He could see the man was clearly in love with Celeste, what man would not be? If he had any honor at all, he would leave now before she awoke for the man sitting humbly before him, as poor and low born as he was, could offer Celeste so much more than he could. For what did he have to offer her? She could have a family of her own; a normal life with a man instead of a beast, but his love far outweighed his honor. He held out his hand. "Thank you, Josef, for keeping her safe when I could not. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten and you'll always have shelter at Kilskeagh." 59

Josef nodded. "Thank you. Maybe someday I can return, but you'll understand if I do not show myself for some time." Sebastian nodded and gained his feet. "I understand." He turned and walked to the beauty awaiting him under the stars. Josef watched as the big man walked swiftly to where Celeste lay. Time for him to leave, he was no longer needed and didn't want to be near when Sebastian reclaimed his lady. "Bye sweet Celeste." He whispered. Quietly he collected his meager belongings and pushed his cart down the rocky trail, a small lantern guiding his way. "Stay." Sebastian whispered to Warrior. He bent and picked Celeste up in his arms, heading deeper into the woods. The sounds of wheels against stone told him that Josef had packed up and left camp so he turned and headed toward the fire. Gently he placed Celeste on the blanket Josef had left spread by the fire. He banked the flame with stones and only a soft glow danced in the darkness. He returned to where she lay, removed his plaid to lay over the two of them and spooned himself behind her. "I have missed you love." he spoke softly. The sounds of the night creatures adding music with the soft glow of the dancing fire was almost magical. He nuzzled her neck, wrapping his arms securely around her waist drawing her tiny body tightly against his hard frame. "I'm so sorry for the pain my family caused you. I can never make it up to you." He kissed her neck, just below her ear, inhaling the scent that was pure Celeste. 60

Celeste had woken as soon as Sebastian left the fire and walked toward her. Warrior, ever her champion, had growled a warning but quieted at her touch. "You have nothing to make up for. You sent me away to protect me. I have always understood that." "I never meant for you to be banished from the clan, I just wanted you safely from the keep and the reach of the aunts." He ran his hand up her calf, slowly rubbing back and forth as he inched up to her thigh bundling the old gown Josef had given her until it was around her waist. "I need you lass; I've missed the feel of your sweet body." His hand moved up and around her hip to find her mound. Gently he pushed his hardened shaft against her ass. Already the beast was roaring, his teeth beginning to lengthen. "Hurry lass roll over." He pushed his shoulder against her back, needing to be inside of her. Claws were pushing through his finger tips, scraping at her tender flesh. "Nay Sebastian." she shook her head. "Not this time, never again." Sebastian stopped, shocked, hurt. "You no longer want me? You cannot forgive me?" "You misunderstand my love. Never again will I turn my back on you as we make love, I will stare into your eyes and see your passion flaring for me." she vowed. "Celeste, I do not want you to see me like this." He growled his voice deepening as the beast fought to be free. "Trust me."

"Very well lass. If you insist." His heart was breaking, for the moment she saw his true self, never again would she allow him to touch her. "Lass, promise me that when you leave me you will go to Josef, he is a good man and will treat you well." The words ate at him; a sword through his heart could not have hurt him more. "Sebastian..." she tried to roll over onto her back. "Nay lass, no looking upon me until I have your promise." He held her firmly facing away. She sighed, clearly exasperated with his foolish demands. "Very well. If the sight of you is more than my poor wee self can bear, I will run screaming into the big strong, safe arms of the tinker." She giggled as she heard his growl behind her. "You little minx." He squeezed her tight and kissed her cheek. Their talk and worry of losing her had cooled his desire but the delightful sound of her laughter brought it rushing back. His shaft hardened and he trailed his kisses up her jaw line, his tongue leaving a trail as he suckled the lobe of her ear. "Sebastian please." she pleaded, rolling against him. He held tightly for a moment before lessening his hold and allowing her to roll onto her back. She stared at him in awe. He waited, holding his breath, arching back and away. "You are beautiful," she reached up, her hands shaking, and placed them on his cheeks, tracing his high defined cheek bones, enhanced by muscles that were never prominent 62

before. "Your eyes are gold and they glow brightly in the moonlight. "I can see better in this form. How can you look upon me? I have fangs Celeste." he lisped, the incisors effecting his speech. The beast had taken over, not much of the man remained. Celeste sat up further. "Your lips are so soft," she whispered, leaning forward to place a gentle kiss on the corner of his mouth. "Love me Sebastian; Love me as we were always meant to be." She lay back on the ground and pulled him down upon her. "It would be my pleasure." he whispered. With his claws he shredded the top of her gown. "See how dangerous the beast is?" he growled. "Nay, not dangerous love, aggressive, Love me, 'Bastian." she pleaded He reared up and plunged deeply into her moist heat. His hands palmed her breasts, tweaking her nipples. Never had he felt such pleasure to love Celeste with such wild abandonment. Celeste moaned, her body coming apart. "I love you, my Lord Beast." she shouted as her body spiraled out of control. Sebastian threw back his head and roared. She loved him. The words opened up some core deep within and with his head thrown back, a ghostly beast shimmered out from his body as his climax reached its peak and when he collapsed back upon Celeste's sweet body, only the man remained. "I love you too, lass." 63
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"How is this possible? How did it happen?" Sebastian asked as he lay basking in the glory that he was now free of the beast, free to feel and to give pleasure to Celeste without fear of rejection or worse, of harming her. "I think, my love, that we just broke the curse." She rolled tightly against him. Sebastian leaned up on his elbow and looked down at her glowing face. "But, how is it possible? Always before, Celeste, as soon as I felt even the hint of pleasure, my beast took over. Why now? What has changed?" Celeste sat up and ran her fingers through his hair pushing it back from his forehead. She kissed him tenderly. "As I have been trying to tell you, my lord beast." she whispered. "True love can conquer all." She leaned in for another kiss and pulled him down upon her, not yet finished convincing him that their love could conquer any curse the witches of Kilskeagh cared to put upon them. Chapter 10 **** "Let us return home, love. I wish for the clan to all rejoice that I have pledged myself to the woman I love and my line shall live on through the babes that we welcome into the world." He picked her up, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead and put her on his mount. Celeste looked down at him, grabbing his hand. "What about the Clan, Bastian? They may never accept me as the Lady of the Keep." She was worried, always being an outcast, she had made no friends. He squeezed her hand and swung up behind her. "They will come to love you as I do, for it was fear that had them keeping their distance. You, love, broke the curse that has burdened our midst for years and threatened the well being of all. Have you not noticed what a cold, lonely place our home was? The witches made sure that there was never joy or laughter amongst the clan members. Nay, we were a somber lot, until now, until you." He nudged the horse with his heels to get him moving. "I thought it was just me that was lonely and unhappy." She looked over her shoulder. "Come, Warrior." she called to the dog who was lying along the well traveled path; his tongue was hanging out the side as he panted, he looked to be smiling. She knew of course that it was not the case, but 65

she was so happy that anything seemed possible. Warrior seemed stronger, but was still very thin. Sebastian noticed her concern. "He'll be fine, lass. We will travel slowly and rest often." He nuzzled her neck. "You, too, need the rest and I'll enjoy seeing that you get it. I am in no hurry to return to the castle and the problems I must face there." "Why do you think they were so cruel? They are your aunts; they should have loved and protected you." She leaned back against his muscle bound chest, her head tilted to look up at him. He shook his head and shrugged his shoulders. "Hatred, jealously, I'm not sure. I don't think they like men overly much for neither Margaret nor Katera seemed overly mournful when their husbands passed. Truth be told, they seemed content even happy with their deaths." "You don't suppose that they had something to do with the deaths do you? If I remember correctly, it was very mysterious how they seemed to waste away." Sebastian was silent absorbing her concerns and thinking about the possibility. "You may be right. The witches were always mixing herbs and potions. Lord only knows the mischief they created within my walls without my knowledge. First to go when we return to the castle is all of their left over belongings. I'll not have some innocent harmed not knowing what may be safe or deadly." The sun shone brightly, just peaking up over the hill tops. The leaves on the trees sparkled with the light dew. "Is it not beautiful?" 66
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"Aye, it is." Sebastian kissed her temple. He stared intently at her. "I have never seen a more beautiful sight." he murmured, again kissing her and inhaling her sweet scent. She gently elbowed him and giggled. "I was talking about the countryside. I have never been beyond the walls of the castle. It is truly wondrous." "We will take many small trips, if it pleases you." He promised. Her smile was mesmerizing and if such a simple thing would keep that smile on her face, he would gladly spend time from his home. "Truly?" she turned to look at him. The horse jumped at the shift in weight and Celeste froze, frightened that she would fall. She'd never ridden a horse. So many new and exciting experiences; loving Sebastian was going to be an adventure. "Easy boy" Sebastian readjusted and patted the animal. "He is just getting his footing." "'Bastian are you sure we can leave the castle? You have many duties to perform." "There may be times when I cannot go away. But, my first and most important duty is seeing to your happiness." He squeezed her. "We don't have to travel far to see such spectacular sights, a mere night now and then will offer many wonderful distractions." Already he could not wait to stop and explore more of her; she was a distraction to be sure. At this rate, it would take them many, many days to return home. "Enjoy yourself, lass. I am seeing everything new through your eyes." The unbridled joy and wonderment on her face 67

brought him such happiness. He could not imagine his life without her in it. **** Atop the ridge across a large ravine still a day's ride from home, Sebastian stopped his mount. He helped Celeste to dismount and turned her to look out over the vast hole where the cliffs dropped off to the sharp rocks below. "Careful, lass, do not stand too close to the edge. Look across and tell me what you see." "Oh my," she exclaimed her hand going to her breasts. "Why it's Kilskeagh! Look how strong and proud she looks standing high on the mountain. The clouds seem to be bending down to cover its tips." She was nervous yet excited to be returning home. "Look how the blue flowers seem to be surrounding the keep, almost like a plaid." "Aye lass. You have an eye for details, love." He turned her to face him and took her hand in his to wrap a strip of plaid around their wrists binding them together. Celeste understood the meaning of the bindings. She smiled, tears of happiness running unashamedly down her cheeks. "Oh 'Bastian." Her other hand went to his cheek, caressing him. He leaned into her touch, relishing in the total freedom of being able to share their affection for one another. He would never tire of her touch. "Love, I would like to pledge my undying love and devotion to you here before out people. With these words, I bind myself forevermore to you."
68
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
Celeste nodded. "I too vow to love you and cherish the life we will make together. With this binding, I pledge myself to Sebastian of Kilskeagh. I am yours forevermore." Sebastian brought their bound hands to his lips, kissing them before laying their fists across his chest. He then pulled her tightly against him with his free arm and took her lips in a long, hot kiss. "No! This is not possible." Sebastian broke the kiss and swung around at the sound of a threat. His sword was attached on his saddle as he had not been thinking of an enemy this close to home. Such carelessness could get them both killed. Margaret stood staring in horror at the bound hands. "The curse prevents you from finding a mate. You are able to feel pleasure, but never find love with another. "Is it not a joyous surprise, Aunt? The curse has been lifted." He smiled and lifted their bound hands for all to see for Katera, Annabelle and the babes were all standing in a group like beggers along the trail. Margaret stepped forward. "Tis not possible. The line was to die with you." she spat. "Are you not happy for us, Aunt? I have found the woman I wish to spend eternity with and in doing so have broken the curse which has plagued our clan for years." "This is not how I had planned..." "Yes, Aunt... explain to me how it is that you know so much of the curse? For years you warned me about forsaking pleasures of the body as the beast may injure or kill a mere human woman. I believed you when you said you were 69
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
working on potions to help find a cure for me. They were lies, were they not?" He began unwinding the cloth binding his wrist to Celeste's. Margaret cackled. "You are such a fool! You were so easily led, just like all the other men." "Ah, so my beliefs are true. Celeste and I came to the conclusion that mayhap you cause the deaths of your dear husbands. I see from Katera's face that we were right." Katera stepped forward trying to save herself. "It is not as it looks nephew. I have no gifts in the art of poisons; my craft lays more in the pleasures of the body." She knew she had said too much and took a step back. "So you are the one that caused the beast to arise at any sign of pleasure?" "Please, Laird, forgive me. I only meant to protect my place in the clan. I will do your bidding if you give me leave to return to the castle with my daughter. No more will I practice the black arts." she vowed. "Shut up you sniveling fool! You are a coward and have not the back bone needed to rule! Is it no wonder I did not want or trust you or your spawn to rule Kilskeagh?" Sebastian shook his head, saddened and disgusted to know that such ugliness had taken place within his walls and he had never suspected. "You have been poisoning people for years. Your husbands and, if I guess correctly, my father have all been your victims." Margaret laughed a full bellied laugh, at last able to brag about her deeds for Sebastian and his whore would never leave this place alive. Why should she not lay claim to her 70
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
victories? "Ah, I have grown much better at the deed over the years with so many to practice upon. Your father, curse his soul, died much too quickly. The potion was much too strong." She rubbed her hands together. "The husbands lasted a bit longer, bad mutton don't you know, was to blame. But, alas, I've learned from my mistakes and become more capable for my latest victim has yet to be claimed." she turned and looked triumphantly at Katera. Confused Katera shook her head. "Not me, surely you did not do this to me." "Oh no sister, Not at all." She glanced around to where Annabelle held the little girl in her arms. Although for some reason she seemed to be getting stronger, she was still too weak to hold her head up. "No! No! No!" Katera screamed in denial. "You poisoned my babe and caused her to weaken?" She was shocked. Margaret was known for her viciousness, but never did she expect her to turn on her own sister. "I will kill you!" She reached for the bow on her back but never got it released. Margaret, ever swift with a knife, threw it and it embedded into Katera's chest. She fell to the ground gasping, bubbles of blood spilling from her lips as she tried to curse. Margaret laughed and knelt by her sister's writhing body. "Well of course I did. No way would I take the chance that your child would lead the clan. My child will be the leader of Clan Kilskeagh." She pointed to Annabelle. "That dimwitted misfit is no threat. She will never conceive and is not crafty enough to stop me. Rest easy, dear sister, as your daughter 71

will soon join you." She cackled as Katera took one final breath and lived no more. Annabelle stepped forward. "Not so dimwitted, sister. "Who do you think put the charm in the potion that allowed true love to break the curse?" "You idiot!" Margaret screamed. "How could you do this? We had a plan and you have ruined everything." "No Margaret, you had a plan, you and Katera. I was never as strong in the arts as the two of you and knew I could not openly defeat you. I waited, playing the simpleton while making my own plans. With Sebastian and his lady's permission, I shall stay on at Kilskeagh and practice the craft while raising my two nieces and teaching them the arts, arts to better help our clan, not work against it." Sebastian looked at Celeste and at her slight nod turned back to Annabelle. "We would be honored to have such a healer amongst our Clan, Annabelle, and I think the young ones would benefit greatly from your teachings." "Over my dead body!" Margaret roared her fury. She lunged to her feet, ripping the knife from Katera's body and ran full bore at Annabelle. Shocked, Sebastian stood frozen. A ferocious growl and bark were all the warning they had as Warrior bounded in front of Annabelle and leaped onto Margaret, causing her to lose her footing. She stumbled and, with a scream of panic, plummeted over the cliff to land on the rocks below. "Stay here." Sebastian rushed to the edge of the cliff. Margaret's body lay at an odd angle, there was no doubt that she lived no more. 72
My Lord Beast by Anna Volk
"It's finally over." Annabelle whispered as she looked first at Katera's dead body and then over to the ledge where she had last seen Margaret's body. "Aye, tis over, The witches of Kilskeagh are no more. No longer will they terrorize the clan; we will be only blessed with a wondrous healer." Annabelle nodded her head. "Thank you and thank you both for allowing me to return to Kilskeagh Castle. It's more than I deserve, but I promise you I will never use magic to cause harm. Sebastian held out his hand for Celeste. He needed to feel her warmth and love. His whole life was surrounded by death and violence. She added light to his life when all he had known was darkness. "You were as much a victim as we were. I hold nothing against you." Celeste nodded. "Nor I, for you were never involved in the evil which took place within the castle walls. "Come, let us leave this place of evil. Let's go home." The bodies were left where they lay, undeserving of a burial. [Back to Table of Contents]

Chapter 11 **** "We must gather fruit along our way home." Annabelle announced. Sebastian held Celeste tightly against his side as they walked along the trail. "I am sure we have enough food stores at the castle that we have no need to worry." "Nay nephew, not to eat." she chuckled. "Then what do you wish to do with the fruit?" he was perplexed. Mayhap Annabelle was touched. "For the tree of course." she continued walking. Sebastian looked at Celeste who shrugged her shoulders. Clearly she did not understand either. "Aunt, I'm afraid I don't understand." Annabelle stopped and turned to look at the couple. "Mayhap I am wrong, but did we not witness a wedding?" Sebastian nodded. "Aye, Celeste and I hand fasted. What of it?" Annabelle clicked her tongue. "Do you know nothing of what is expected of a newly married couple?" "Annabelle, I believed I would always be a beast and never find true love. Why would I know such things?" "Oh of course, pardon me, nephew." She walked back and patted his arm. She had Katera's young babe swaddled tightly in a blanket in one arm and Margaret's daughter was clinging to her skirts. "I will explain. It is customary for a newly 74

married couple to march through the village holding a tree decorated with fruit. It is said that if you carry the fruit decorated tree, you will be lucky and bear fruit. That means have children, nephew." "What nonsense! We have no need to carry a tree through the village." He had always kept part of his life to himself and knew that Celeste would not want to draw attention to their union. "But nephew..." Annabelle began. Celeste touched Sebastian's arm. "It's alright if you do not wish for people to know we are married. We are the only ones that know and if you wish to keep it a secret, I understand." She took a step away, hurt. How she thought things would be different. He grabbed her hand and pulled her hard against him. "Of course I want everyone to know!" He turned to look at Annabelle and the girls. "Lassies, you find the biggest tree you can carry and decorate it with what we have...the Beast of Kilskeagh is bringing his lady wife home." He dipped his head and claimed Celeste's mouth. The girls giggled and went off in search of a tree befitting the Lord of Kilskeagh. Warrior gave an excited bark and chased after them. "I love you." Sebastian whispered against her lips. "I love you too, my Lord Beast."
