MAPPING THE PRINT WORLD OF EARLY MODERN IBERIA Alexander S. Wilkinson Introduction Iberian Books (IB) is the product of a three year research project based at the Centre for the History of the Media at University College Dublin. It offers a short-title catalogue of around 19,800 bibliographically distinct items, with reference to over 104,000 surviving copies in 1,320 libraries worldwide. It represents the first modern attempt to produce a comprehensive listing of all books published in Spain, Portugal and Mexico or printed elsewhere in Spanish or Portuguese during the first great age of the printed book, 1472–1600. Bibliographical Landscape In April 1975, Don Cruickshank delivered a paper to the Bibliographical Society in London that was at once insightful and provocative.1 Cruickshank lamented that Golden Age bibliography in Spain lagged behind that of other European nations and was only slowly emerging from a ‘long dark tunnel’ – a fact he attributed, at least in part, to the impact of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). A distinguished and talented literary scholar and analytical bibliographer, Cruickshank criticised what he saw as an unwelcome tendency in the field towards systematic bibliography focused narrowly on particular holdings. The culture of early modern printing on the Peninsula, he argued, could only be revealed through close analytical inspection of works, forensically exploiting evidence such as type and typographical ornamentation. Any straightforward listing of items gleaned from inventories and catalogues is insufficient, for it cannot reveal publishing practices such as the joint involvement of a consortium of printers, but where only one printer is stated on the title page or in the colophon. Without physical inspection of items, false dates on reprinted editions cannot properly be discovered and works without stated places of publication can be erroneously described. Only through examination can the true origins of a work be identified.2 In short, without careful analytical attention to the book as a physical artefact, Cruickshank argued, scholars are at risk of being presented with a ‘distorted picture’ of publishing on the peninsula. While many of these cautions remain as relevant in 2010 as they were in 1975, few could dispute that Iberian bibliography has come a long way since the publication of Cruickshank’s clarion call. In 1978, the Cambridge bibliographer Frederick John Norton (1904–1986) produced his milestone Descriptive Catalogue of Printing in Spain and Portugal which spanned the period from 1501 to 1520.3 More recently, over the past two decades, many late nineteenth century bibliographies have been updated, while new analytical catalogues of printing centres and offices have been published, such as Julían Martín Abad’s La Imprenta en Alcalá

de Henares (1502–1600),4 Lorenzo Ruiz Fidalgo’s La imprenta en Salamanca (1501–1600),5 and Clive Griffin’s The Crombergers of Seville.6 To date, Iberian bibliography has proceeded principally by surveying many – though not all – of the Peninsula’s multiple centres of publication. On the one hand, the adoption of such an approach has been eminently sensible. By focusing on the output of cities such as Salamanca or Burgos or Alcalá de Henares, bibliographers have been in a position to concentrate their expertise on manageable numbers of editions and copies. They have often been able to exploit their specialist knowledge, in particular by using archival and other resources in their quest for references to editions or states which existed but which have now been lost. We have now reached a point, however, where the single most important structural problem facing our understanding of the book world of the Iberian Peninsula is not the absence of adequate bibliographical investigation, but the lack of an evolving national short-title catalogue that might serve as a showcase for its findings. It is truly staggering that there has been no previous attempt to produce a short-title catalogue for Spain, while the catalogue of Portuguese books published in the sixteenth century compiled by Antonio Joaquim Anselmo (1876–1925) has not been updated since 1926.7 In consequence, scholars of Spain and Portugal have been forced to confront a highly fragmented picture of publishing on the Peninsula, exploiting disparate catalogues of collections, of places of publication or of printing houses. Besides the obvious practical problems facing those wishing to gain the most basic list of all works by a given author, the absence of an STC has also led to fundamental difficulties in visualising the broader landscape of Iberian publishing. Until the publication of IB, it would have been virtually impossible to gain a reliable indication of how many books were produced in this period, let along an understanding of how the industry of print evolved over the course of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The fragmentation that is so characteristic of Iberian bibliography has been alleviated, at least in part, by the relatively recent appearance of major online collective catalogues of Spain and Portugal’s major research collections – the Catálogo Colectivo del Patrimonio Bibliográfico Español and Porbase.8 Nor can we fail to mention the Heritage of the Printed Book Database (formerly the Hand Press Book database) managed by the Consortium of European Research Libraries.9 Such initiatives – the products of industrious, dedicated and skilled scholarship – have made profound contributions to our understanding of the print culture of the Iberian Peninsula. However, collective catalogues of this nature are not without their problems, a consequence of their very purpose and scope. Collective catalogues are not intended to perform the same function as short-title catalogues. They deal with vast amounts of information drawn from different evolving library catalogues. There is often a high degree of automation in the way in which records are incorporated into the central interface. Without the equivalent of ISBN numbers or other unique identifiers, this leads to duplication of records. Rather than additional copy information being added to existing records, new items are all too often created. Collective catalogues are, therefore, wholly unreliable for the purposes of statistical analysis. but not all libraries in Spain and Portugal, and in the case of the Hand Press Books Project, to a selection of national research collections. Short-title catalogues, on the other hand, adopt a very different methodology by actively pursuing a global census of works. The various collective catalogues outlined above – once combined – record only around one half of all the items listed in IB. A short-title catalogue facilitates research by offering a practical resource in identifying works of a particular author or printer, together with a global census of surviving copies. It can also offer important opportunities for contextualisation, enabling scholars to better understand the broader contours and trends in the world of publishing. The experience of the English print domain offers a powerful demonstration of the benefits of such a resource. Since 1926, anyone wishing to look at the print culture of early modern England, Scotland or Ireland could turn to Alfred Pollard and Gilbert Redgrave’s monumental English Short-Title Catalogue (STC).10 In 1938, encouraged by Pollard and Redgrave’s volume, the process of microfilming England’s printed heritage began in earnest – a project conceived as a commercial venture, but also clearly motivated by a desire to ensure the preservation of rare material and to broaden access to it.11 The short-title catalogue itself was revised and expanded significantly in 1976 and 1986, raising the total number of known items from 26,143 to 36,689.12 In its most recent incarnation, the STC has been made available free of charge as an electronic resource (ESTC),13 while the subscription-based Early English Books Online (EEBO) offers text-searchable editions of almost all items in the catalogue, accessible across the globe.14 The ESTC and its ancillary initiatives truly represent the gold-standard of bibliographical projects. The English print domain, as a consequence, stands as one of the most researched and best understood in Europe. The ESTC has enjoyed several distinctive advantages which help explain its comparatively rapid development. Print production, although high per capita, was relatively modest in actual terms – certainly in comparison with the major domains of Italy, Germany and France. Moreover, it is a striking peculiarity of book survival in the English print domain that copies of a very high percentage of items can be found in a small number of core collections in Britain and North America. Above all other advantages, however, the ESTC has demonstrated a truly enviable ability to cultivate the support and cooperation of scholars and librarians worldwide who continue to help update and refine its entries. In many senses, the root of the ESTC’s success lies in the fact that it has been embraced by the scholarly community and is regarded as a living resource. Iberian Books: Strengths and Limitations The objective of IB has been to bring together information that has remained fragmented. It has integrated information from collective catalogues, online and published catalogues of individual collections, and specialist analytical bibliographies of printing centres and offices. A full list of the specialist bibliographies which have been consulted and the libraries surveyed can be found at the end of this introduction. end result of all these investigations has been to add significantly to the corpus of known editions, states and issues – including those publishing centres well serviced by modern analytical bibliographies.15 IB has also been able to provide a far more complete map than has hitherto been possible of surviving copies, through its census of over 1320 libraries worldwide. The importance of undertaking a global census of copies across a range of collections is demonstrated by the startling statistic that around one quarter of items listed in IB have no known surviving copy in any Spanish or Portuguese library. The most important collections outside of the Peninsula include (in order of importance): the British Library in London, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, Harvard University Libraries, the Biblioteca Nacional of Mexico, the Bodleian Library in Oxford, the National Library in Vienna, the Cambridge University libraries, the Biblioteca nazionale centrale Vittorio Emanuele II in Rome, and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. While all the libraries listed above represent the most significant holdings of early Iberian publishing worldwide, it is worth stressing the importance of small and medium size collections. Such collections often contain unique and rare items which have tended to have been overlooked by the scholarly community. For instance, of the 125 books listed on the inventory provided in March 2009 by Renae Satterley, Rare Books Librarian at the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in London, 6 are unique, while a further 24 are known to survive in fewer than 5 copies. It is hoped therefore that IB will offer a useful resource to the scholarly community. It should be admitted, however, that no one is more conscious of its limitations than its editor. It was simply not possible financially to inspect the items listed here. Without a systematic programme of inspection and analytical description, IB is dependent for the reliability of its information on the sources it has consulted. Those collections without a published or online catalogue are less well covered in this bibliography – although partial accounts of their holdings may have come into the catalogue via specialist bibliographies. Additionally, there are some areas of publishing which are under-represented. Most problematic of all is that category of books which emerged from the presses undated or without place of publication information. Unless an item has been identified as belonging to the fifteenth or sixteenth century in an

online or published catalogue, or it is contained in one of the major bibliographies, it may have escaped notice. Future Evolution: IB and the Universal Short-Title Catalogue Project It is important to emphasize that this hardback catalogue represents the first edition of IB. It is very much hoped, however, that the scholarly community, librarians, booksellers and private collectors will not only find sufficient merit in this initiative to make use of its findings in their research, but also help support its development by suggesting additions and refinements. A project of this nature can only evolve successfully as a collaborative effort. It is anticipated that an online catalogue might appear within the next few years. However, it was appropriate that the first edition of the catalogue appear in printed form. Above all, a catalogue that celebrates the rich printed heritage of Spain and Portugal should not itself contribute to hastening the demise of print. There is an intangible but nonetheless real serendipitous relationship between reader and printed book that is difficult to emulate in electronic format. There is also, of course, the issue of the status of online versus printed publications, with all the consequences of medium on user perception. While the value of electronic resources are recognized by all, it still remains the case that a printed resource bearing a prestigious imprint is more likely to be reviewed in academic journals and, therefore, be brought to the attention of colleagues in the scholarly community. It is hoped that the online version of IB will be embraced as an organic resource, which can respond to the demands of its users. An online infrastructure affords a myriad of possibilities, such as the addition of digital biographies of authors, translators and publishers, to say nothing of the opportunities of a central portal for drawing attention to digital reproductions being produced by research libraries and by commercial organisations. IB Online will also operate in close partnership with a truly innovative bibliographic initiative currently being undertaken at the Reformation Studies Institute at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. The Universal Short-Title Catalogue Project (USTC), funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, will provide a uniquely valuable survey of all European printing before 1601.16 To this end, it will harness the power of existing database resources such as the English Short-Title Catalogue, the ongoing Edit1617 project which covers Italian printing, VD1618 which covers German printing, and French Vernacular Books which has surveyed all books printed in French before 1601.19 In addition, the USTC project will survey those print domains not yet adequately covered by a catalogue – including Latin books printed in France, Netherlandish publishing and printing in Eastern Europe. It is now becoming possible to imagine wholly new and innovative ways in which scholars might be able to undertake research into the history of early printing. Within only a few years, scholars will have the necessary tools to probe both the contours and poetics of every major print domain. They will also be able to compare cultures of print. It will, for instance, be possible to assess the depth of interest in different themes or categories of print across different 16 This ambitious project is directed by Professor Andrew Pettegree and managed by Dr Malcolm Walsby. domains or to consider the movement of texts across Europe. In particular, the USTC will help scholars understand the trade in Latin books, which was shaped as much around international as national markets. Only with recent advances in bibliographical coverage will scholars be in a position to explore the transnational world of the book in early modern Europe. The Catalogue: Method of Description Entries in this catalogue are arranged alphabetically by principal author. Where there is more than one author, the book is entered only once. However, a robust system of cross-referencing has also been inserted to assist the reader. Multiple works by the same author are ordered chronologically rather than by title. Items where there is no stated author, but where the author may be reliably inferred, are listed alongside the author’s main works. Works published pseudonymously are also published alongside the author’s main name. Works by foreign authors are listed under their main name rather than under their Spanish or Portuguese translator or editor. Names have been rendered in the standardized forms of the country of birth. In the case of works with no known author, these are listed under the heading derived from the title or subject. Works of the Catholic Church appear under the heading Ecclesia Catholica and are then further subdivided, for instance Ecclesia Catholica – Rituale or Ecclesia Catholica – Breviarium. Laws and official ordinances have been grouped together under España – Legislación and Portugal – Legislação rather than placed under the name of the monarch. Place names, in all instances, are given in their modern, local equivalent (e.g. Ecclesia Catholica – Breviarium – Salamanca). Short titles have not been modernised; accents, therefore, have not been added. Entries then give place of printing, printer information and date of publication, if known. Inferred information in these categories is given in square brackets. Format is also given where known. The names of printers, as with places of publication, have been rendered in their vernacular forms. Copy information is provided for all known copies. In order to ensure that these entries were accommodated in a single volume, library codes have been given rather than library names. A full list of these codes is given in the preliminaries. While the Project has systematically collected call number information, the parameters of space would not permit their publication here. The bibliographical source has been indicated for works where there is no surviving copy. Following common practice in published short-title catalogues, the consequence of limited space, references have not been included for the majority of items listed. Where two items appear identical or very similar from their basic description, a note has been included to help explain the differentiation. Where a bibliography has separated two items, but where the reason for the separation is not immediately apparent, the bibliographical reference has been indicated. Two indices are offered at the end of the catalogue – a chronological index, and an index of place of publication and printer. Dates of activity for each printing house have been included, derived from information in this catalogue. Editions, States and Issues This bibliography is constructed on the same principle as the first catalogue in this Brill series, French Vernacular Books, in recording bibliographically distinct issues and states of a book as separate items. It has followed this model for two principal reasons. Firstly, IB has recorded

around 19,800 items without having the benefit of detailed physical examination of the works described. In such circumstances, conflating states and issues risks conflating editions. Secondly, by separating entries in this way, IB is able to better draw attention to the phenomenon of sixteenth-century publishing where the often considerable capital costs involved in producing an edition were shared between different publishers and printers. Figure 1 gives a broad overview of the pattern of book production from 1472 to 1600. The data is based on items; this means that a large folio volume taking many months to produce and a small four page romance are, in effect, given equal weighting. There is growing recognition that analysis based on the number of sheets gives a much more sophisticated account of the productive output. However, this type of investigation is a step beyond where the project stands at the moment. We must also suspend, for the time being, any discussion of varying rates of loss for different categories of print which, undeniably, will have had an impact on our figures.21 The first surviving book to have been printed in Spain was the Sinodal de Aguilafuente, published on behalf of the local bishop in the city of Segovia in June 1472.22 It would be another decade and a half before printing reached Portugal.23 While a modest number of editions were published in the 1470s, the 1480s and 1490s witnessed a very steady growth of publishing on the Peninsula. At the turn of the century, overall production levelled out with roughly the same number of books printed between 1501 and 1510 as 1491–1500. However, the graph demonstrates a much greater unevenness in annual figures. It may be supposed that such erratic annual production statistics may be explained largely by the varying size of works produced. Given the importance of retaining skilled labour, productive capacity probably remained steady, even if the number of published items varied yearly. The industry was organised on a more steady footing than the volatility of these chronological statistics might immediately suggest.24 Although unclear from the graph, there is a 36 per cent increase in production in the period 1510–1520. Production levels then remained steady for two decades until the 1540s,25 before witnessing a second 37 per cent increase between the 1540s and 1550. Production levels then remained steady until the 1570s. There is a 20 per cent increase in production between the 1570s and 1580s, with yet another 23 per cent increase between the 1580s and 1590s. Within this general pattern of intervals of consolidation followed by stepped increases, there are also a number of interesting anomalies worthy of comment. The marked downward turn evident for 1500–1501 is, despite appearances, probably the consequence of modern attribution of dates, with librarians and bibliographers often opting for the earlier date, 1500, and thus claiming their book as an incunable. This issue of tendencies in attribution may also, at least partially, underpin the marked peak in production in 1520 – the end date for Norton’s Descriptive Catalogue of Printing in Spain Portugal.26 No such obvious cause can be used to explain the collapse in output which occurs in 1522. This may have been the consequence of overproduction in 1520. However, it is possible that this downturn was also the result of a collision of other factors, including the increased pace of migration out of Spain to the New World,27 and the impact of the Comuneros Revolt of 1520–1522. The Revolt is known to have had an unhelpful impact on commerce across Spain, not least the book trade. For instance, the city of Medina del Campo with its important twice yearly fair, was devastated by fire in late 1520.28 It is difficult to determine without further investigation whether the events of these years led to the stagnation in the industry that we witness up to the 1540s, or whether the industry had in fact already entered a period of consolidation punctuated by an anomaly in 1520–1522. From even the briefest glance at the statistics, however, one can sense the remarkable energy which returns into the industry from the 1540s up to around 1556. But then, once again, disaster struck. The cause of this decline, however, has a much more straightforward explanation – a major economic recession. Philip II inherited a precarious financial situation from his father – the result of foreign wars which combined with rampant inflation.29 The King was forced to declare state bankruptcy in 1557 and 1560. Existing taxes were increased, while new taxes were introduced – a fact which hit manufacturing industries and consumer spending badly. century. The only major disturbance to this pattern is an unusual peak in 1588. It would have been rather exciting to report a correlation between the increase in production in this year and events relating to the Armada. However, this peak probably stands as an example of market correction. Overall, therefore, in Spain and Portugal, we can see an example of an evolving publishing industry where levels of consumption were influenced primarily by factors such as population growth, increasing literacy, and broader economic rhythms. In this respect, the Peninsula represents an interesting case study in Europe of a print culture which was not buffeted by powerful event-driven motors. The polemical battles of the German Reformation in the 1520s or of the French Religious Wars in the 1560s profoundly reshaped the print cultures of those countries. In Spain and Portugal, there were no comparable crises played out in the public sphere. Structure of the Industry Let us now turn our attention to the structure of the publishing industry on the Peninsula. The work undertaken for IB has made it possible for us to adopt a macroscopic view. As elsewhere in Europe, the longer-term structure of the industry was formed in the age of the incunabula.30 Initially operating in a number of locations such as Murcia and Segovia where there was no sustainable market, printing ultimately became concentrated in Spain and Portugal’s major urban centres. Perhaps one of the most remarkable characteristics of the publishing industry as it developed on the Peninsula is the strength of multiple printing centres. In this respect, it follows the German model much more closely than the French or English models.31 It is true to say that Seville was the most important producer of print up to the early 1550s (dominated indeed by the Cromberger presses),32 but its mantle was then taken over first by Salamanca until the 1580s, and then Madrid in the last two decades of the century. It is worth stressing, however, that these cities did not dominate the production of books in the same way, for instance, that Paris or Lyon dominated production in France, or London dominated in England. There were around 12 very significant printing centres, which accounted for at least 75 per cent of all books published on the Peninsula or in Spanish or Portuguese before 1601. This table does not include the considerable number of works without stated place of publication which, nonetheless, probably emanated from one of these twelve cities. Table 2. Table 3 gives us an insight into the shifting fortunes of the principal printing centres across the century. In addition to what centre led in terms of production, and when, the table also reveals that a number of centres, such as Valencia and Zaragoza quietly hold their market share, responding to fluctuations in consumption through the century. It is also important to draw attention to the advance of Madrid which appears to have occurred at the expense of two other centres – most especially Alcalá de Henares but also Salamanca. One important aspect of the structure of the publishing industry which is worth addressing relates to the international production of vernacular Iberian books. In a splendid article published in the Hispanic Review in 1979, Theodore S. Beardsley wrote of an ‘Antwerp Period’ in Spanish book production, roughly covering the years 1541 to 1558. Speaking of the 1540s, he commented that ‘a major revolution occurs in Spanish publishing: the majority of Spanish books are published outside of Spain’.33 A similar stress on the impact of international vernacular Spanish publishing can also be found in other distinguished scholarly studies34 – often coupled with almost apologetic comments on the rudimentary state of Spanish typography and the obvious appeal of more sophisticated imports. The data collected by IB offers a corrective to this long-established but in fact wholly erroneous impression. Antwerp was the only international centre of vernacular Spanish publication of any significance, although a trickle of Spanish language printing was also produced in cities such as Venice, Paris, Lyon, Rome, Brussels, Toulouse, London, Milan, and Turin. Only in the period 1540–1560 was Antwerp an important centre of Spanish printing, with publishers such as Johannes Steelsius and Martin Nutius producing around 11 per cent of all Spanish vernacular works known in these years.35 But while 11 per cent is an impressive statistic, it scarcely qualifies as a publishing revolution. Antwerp remained one printing centre amongst many. For the moment, it is also difficult to determine what proportion of works produced on these presses were destined for concentrations of Spanish-speaking populations in

the Spanish Netherlands (or those in close proximity, in places such as England)36 and what proportion were intended for export to Iberian markets. Language of Publication: Latin versus Vernacular Before we examine the type of works produced on the presses in Spain and Portugal in this period, we might take a moment to reflect on the language of publication. Indeed, one of the defining characteristics of publishing on the Peninsula is the relatively low percentage of books printed in Latin compared to the vernacular languages of Castilian, Portuguese and Catalan. Even during the industry’s formative years – the age of the incunabula – only around two fifths of all books produced in Spain or Portugal were in Latin. From the very earliest stages, vernacular literature dominated the presses – with Castilian preeminent, followed by Portuguese and Catalan.37 In the 1510s and 1520s, the proportion of Latin books published decreased even further, ultimately settling at around 29 per cent of publishing in the 1530s and 1540s where it would stay for the remainder of the century. This figure of 29 per cent is interesting in two respects. Firstly, in comparison to almost every other major print domain in Europe, this balance in language of publication is most unusual. In France, Italy and Germany, Latin print continued to dominate the book world well into the seventeenth century. Only England exhibited similar characteristics to Spain and Portugal – that is of a vibrant vernacular print culture, where the vast majority of Latin printing was imported rather than produced domestically.38 Secondly, the headline figure of 29 per cent of production in Latin which is stable from the 1530s–1540s until the end of the century obscures something even more intriguing – a vigorous reconfiguration in patterns of production within individual centres of print. From Table 4, we can see that Latin production remains relatively stable in Seville, Valencia, Burgos, Lisbon, and Valladolid. However, it increases dramatically in Salamanca and Toledo, and decreases in Alcalá de Henares, Zaragoza and Barcelona. As we will see, this phenomenon of stability in terms of national consumption which was supported by considerable transformations at a local level, can also be witnessed in terms of genre of material produced. Latin publishing represents one of the least well studied aspects of the print world of early modern Europe, perhaps because it can be understood only within a transnational context. The work of the Universal Short-Title Catalogue Project should make it easier to gain a much clearer sense of the broad contours of this European trade. However, much more work can also be undertaken on bookselling within individual countries, exploiting archival resources such as booksellers’ inventories or the catalogues of the Frankfurt book fair at least to begin to reconstruct the intricate import and export market for Latin works.39 Understanding what was read in a country is only partially possible by looking at the output of its own presses. General Publication Trends In order to better understand general patterns of book production, items listed in the catalogue were classified according to a very broad scheme. Around four fifths of items have so far been classified in this way. Although rudimentary, the results of this analysis can be found in Figures 2 and 3. Religious items account for 46 per cent of total production in 1500–1520 and in 1580–1600. The percentage of literary works declines a little from 15 to 11 per cent, with works of history and chronicles remaining steady at around 3–4 per cent of items; classical works decline from 4 to 1 per cent, while jurisprudence experiences a modest increase from 11 to 16 per cent. As with the issue of language of publication, what is most startling is the degree of stability in terms of national consumption statistics over the course of the century. And as with the issue of language of publication, when we look behind the headline percentages and focus our attention on individual printing centres, we see local volatility underpinning national stability. Take, for instance, the presses of the western Spanish city of Salamanca. See Figures 4 and 5. Between 1500 and 1520, 39 per cent of items published in the city were of a religious nature, 7 per cent were works of literature, 17 per cent were works of jurisprudence including royal ordinances, while medical books accounted for 5 per cent of production. By 1580–1600, religious publishing accounts for an enormous 70 per cent of items produced, while literature drops to 5 per cent. Jurisprudence has also dropped to 7 per cent, undoubtedly a consequence of the rise of Madrid. In Alcalá de Henares, the proportion of religious works rises modestly over the century, while works of literature rise from 4 per cent in 1500–1520 to 15 per cent in the last two decades of the century. Much more work needs to be undertaken to understand this pattern of production. Preliminary investigations appear to suggest that while consumption as whole increases over the century, the broad genres of work produced remain stable. While the type of works produced within individual printing centres changes, perhaps the consequence of specialisation and market experimentation, the industry as a whole responds, and often quite rapidly, to national consumer demand. by jurisprudence and official ordinances. The next major category was romances. The public appetite for this genre of popular literature appears to have been insatiable. The most eagerly consumed themes included the tales of Amadís de Gaula, Canamor, Clamades y Clarmonda, Rodrigo Díaz de Bivar (El Cid), Gayferos, Fernán Gonçález, Reinaldos de Montalbán and Palmerín de Oliva. Despite their size and consequent expense, these romances appear to have attracted a broad social readership/audience. They offered stories of heroic daring set within an imagined historical reality. While the early seventeenth-century observations of Miguel de Cervantes (1547–1616) through his most famous creation Don Quijote should be interpreted with caution, there may be some legitimacy to his statement that chivalric romances: were read with general pleasure, and celebrated by the great and the small, by the poor and the rich, the learned and the ignorant, the simple and the noble, in short by people of every sort, of whatever rank or condition.40

Outside of these major categories, a list of the most published authors of the period offer some additional insight into contemporary tastes. The ten most published authors before 1601 were Luis de Granada (1505–1588),41 Antonio de Nebrija (1444?–1522),42 Antonio de Guevara (1480–1545),43 Domingo de Soto (1494–1560),44 Martín de Azpilcueta (1491–1586),45 Juan Lorenzo Palmireno (1514–1579),46 Fernando de Rojas (circa 1465–1541),47 Pedro Ciruelo (1470–1548),48 Diego de San Pedro (circa 1437–circa 1498)49 and Alonso de Villegas y Selvago (1534–1615).50 The vast majority of the output of these authors covered a range of scholarly and devotional interests – Antonio de Nebrija in particular stands as the example of the consummate Humanist publishing on a range of subjects, including linguistics and rhetoric. Literature is represented on this list by Fernando de Rojas and Diego de San Pedro. Rojas’ tragic comedy, La Celestina, was published around 87 times between 1499 and 1599, while San Pedro’s sentimental romance the Carcel de Amor appeared over 40 times between 1509 and 1598. They are amongst the most published, and one assumes most popular, literary works of the period.

Conclusions The information collected by IB has made it possible to visualise the broad contours of publishing on the Peninsula. It has shown that overall levels of production virtually trebled between the first and last two decades of the sixteenth century. Population rises and increasing literacy rates combined to stimulate demand. The print industry was also buffeted over the course of the century by two major events which had a major impact on the output of the presses – the Comuneros Revolt of 1520–1522 and the economic recession which struck at the end of the 1550s. Our analysis has demonstrated the degree to which printing on the Peninsula was dispersed across a number of urban centres. While there was no overwhelming concentration of production in any one place, as there was in France or England, Seville was the most significant centre of printing until the early 1550s. It was then replaced by Salamanca until the 1580s and then Madrid to the end of the century. Like England, the vibrancy of vernacular publishing was clear from the very earliest years. Spain and Portugal would rely for the majority of its Latin books on imports from other European countries. Significant elements of Iberian publishing appear to have remained stable over the long term, such as the proportion of books published in Latin to vernacular and the broad genres of works consumed by the population. But while what people wanted to buy seems generally to have remained static, what is remarkable is the underlying transformations that occurred within different centres of printing which nonetheless combined to satisfy this demand. What is suggested by this preliminary examination of the information contained in IB is the extraordinary responsiveness of the publishing industry as a whole to the demands of early-modern consumers.

UNA CARTOGRAFÍA DEL MUNDO DE LA IMPRENTA IBÉRICA EN LA TEMPRANA EDAD MODERNA Alexander S. Wilkinson Introducción Iberian Books (IB) es el resultado de un proyecto de investigación con duración de tres años que tuvo lugar en el Centro para la Historia de los Medios de Comunicación (Centre for the History of the Media) del University College de Dublín. Este proyecto ofrece un catálogo de títulos abreviados de cerca de 19,800 impresos distintos que corresponden a 104,000 ejemplares que sobreviven en 1,320 bibliotecas de todo el mundo. Constituye el primer esfuerzo por producir una lista completa de todas las obras impresas en España, Portugal y México, o impresas en otros lugares en español o portugués durante la primera gran era del libro impreso, 1472–1600. Panorama bibliográfico En abril de 1975, Don Cruickshank presentó una ponencia ante la Bibliographical Society en Londres que resultó tanto reveladora como provocadora.1 Cruickshank se lamentaba que la bibliografía del Siglo de Oro en España estaba muy atrasada en comparación con la de otros países europeos y sólo comenzaba a salir de un “largo y oscuro túnel” – un hecho que atribuía, por lo menos en parte, al impacto de la Guerra Civil Española (1936–1939). Cruickshank, un notable y talentoso estudioso de la literatura así como un bibliógrafo analítico, criticaba lo que veía como una tendencia poco recomendable en el campo a crear bibliografías sistemáticas que se enfocaban sólo en ciertos acervos particulares. El estudioso alegaba que la cultura temprana de la imprenta en la Península sólo podría llegar a conocerse a través de un cuidadoso análisis de obras, explotando, de manera forense, evidencia como la tipografía y la ornamentación tipográfica. Cualquier elenco convencional creado a partir de inventarios resulta insuficiente, pues no puede revelar las prácticas de publicación, tales como la cooperación de consorcios de editores, cuando sólo aparece mencionado el nombre de un único editor en la primera página o en el colofón. Sin realizar un examen físico de los ejemplares, no se pueden descubrir adecuadamente fechas falsas en las reimpresiones, y las obras en las cuales no se menciona el lugar de publicación pueden ser descritas de manera errónea. Sólo a través de un examen físico puede ser identificado el verdadero origen de una obra.2 En resumen, sin prestar atención analítica al libro como artefacto físico, según Cruickshank, los estudiosos corren el riesgo de encarar un “panorama distorsionado” de las prácticas de publicación en la Península. Aunque muchas de estas advertencias son tan relevantes hoy en día en el año 2010 como lo eran en 1975, pocos podrían cuestionar que la bibliografía ibérica ha avanzado mucho desde la publicación desde el toque de rebato de Cruickshank. in Spain and Portugal, que abarcaba del periodo de 1501 a 1520.3 Más recientemente, a lo largo de las dos últimas décadas, muchas de las bibliografías de finales del siglo diecinueve han sido actualizadas y se han publicado nuevos catálogos analíticos de centros y talleres de publicación tales como La imprenta en Alcalá de Henares (1502–1600) de Julián Martín Abad,4 La imprenta en Salamanca (1501–1600) de Lorenzo Ruiz Fidalgo,5 y The Crombergers of Seville de Clive Griffin.6 Hasta la fecha, la bibliografía ibérica ha procedido principalmente por medio de una inspección de los muchos – aunque no todos – múltiples centros de publicación de la Península. Por un lado, la adopción de este método ha sido eminentemente sensato. Al enfocarse en la producción de ciudades tales como Salamanca o Burgos o Alcalá de Henares, los bibliógrafos han podido concentrar sus conocimientos en números manejables de ediciones (tiradas) y ejemplares. Con frecuencia han podido hacer uso de sus conocimientos especializados, especialmente utilizando recursos de archivo y de otros tipos en su búsqueda de referencias a las ediciones que existieron pero que actualmente se han perdido. Hemos llegado al punto, sin embargo, en el cual el problema estructural más importante al encarar una comprensión del mundo del libro en la Península Ibérica no es la falta de investigación bibliográfica adecuada, sino la falta de un catálogo nacional de títulos abreviados en evolución que pudiera servir como vitrina de tales resultados de investigación. Es realmente sorprendente que no haya habido anteriormente un intento por producir un catálogo de títulos abreviados en España, y que el catálogo de libros portugueses publicados en el siglo dieciséis compilado por António Joaquim Anselmo (1876–1925) no se haya actualizado desde 1926.7 En consecuencia, los estudiosos de España y Portugal se ven obligados a confrontar una visión altamente fragmentada del panorama de la imprenta en la Península, explotando catálogos desiguales de colecciones, de lugares de publicación o de casas de publicación. Además de los obvios problemas prácticos a los que se enfrentan quienes pretenden obtener la más básica lista de todas las obras de un determinado autor, la ausencia de un catálogo de títulos abreviados también ha llevado a dificultades fundamentales en visualizar un panorama más amplio de la imprenta en la Península Ibérica. Hasta la publicación de IB, hubiera sido prácticamente imposible tener cualquier indicio confiable de cuántos libros fueron producidos en este periodo, por no hablar de una idea de la evolución de la industria de la imprenta a lo largo de los siglos XV y XVI. La fragmentación que es tan característica de la bibliografía ibérica ha sido remediada, por lo menos en parte, por a la aparición relativamente reciente de grandes catálogos colectivos en línea de las colecciones de investigación más importantes de España y Portugal – el Catálogo Colectivo del Patrimonio Bibliográfico Español y Porbase.8 No podemos además dejar de mencionar la Heritage of the Printed Book Database (anteriormente llamada Hand Press Book database) administrada por el Consorcio de Bibliotecas Europeas de Investigación (Consortium of European Research Libraries).9 Tales iniciativas – fruto de investigaciones expertas, dedicadas, e industriosas – han hecho profundas contribuciones a nuestro conocimiento de la 3 Frederick J. cultura de la imprenta en la Península Ibérica. Sin embargo, los catálogos colectivos de esta naturaleza no dejan de tener sus problemas, como consecuencia de su propósito en sí y sus parámetros. Los catálogos colectivos no tienen el propósito de servir las mismas funciones que los catálogos de títulos abreviados. Trabajan con grandes cantidades de información que proviene de diferentes catálogos de biblioteca en evolución. Siempre hay un alto grado de automatización en la manera en que los registros se incorporan al interface central. Sin el equivalente de números de ISBN o cualquier otro identificador único, surge el problema de la duplicación de registros. En lugar de añadir información sobre ejemplares al registro existente, con mucha frecuencia se crean nuevos registros. Los catálogos colectivos, por lo tanto, son enteramente inseguros para propósitos de análisis estadístico. Además, los catálogos colectivos limitan su recolección de datos a un número definido de colecciones, en el caso del Catálogo Colectivo y Porbase, que se limitan a algunas pero no a todas las bibliotecas de España y Portugal, y en el caso del Hand Press Books Project, que se limita a una selección de colecciones de investigación nacional. Los catálogos de título abreviado, por otro lado, adoptan una metodología muy diferente, procurando activamente producir un censo global de las obras. Los diversos catálogos colectivos descritos anteriormente – una vez combinados – sólo registran cerca de la mitad de todas las obras impresas que aparecen en IB. Un catálogo de títulos abreviados facilita la investigación al ofrecer un recurso práctico para identificar las obras de un autor o impresor en particular, junto con un censo global de los ejemplares existentes. También puede ofrecer importantes oportunidades de contextualización, permitiéndole a los estudiosos entender mejor los límites más amplios y las tendencias en el mundo de la publicación. La experiencia del ámbito de publicación en Inglaterra nos demuestra de manera convincente los beneficios de tal recurso. Desde 1926, cualquier persona interesada en la cultura de publicación de la temprana edad moderna en Inglaterra, Escocia o Irlanda podía dirigirse al monumental English Short-Title Catalogue (STC) compilado por Alfred Pollard y Gilbert Redgrave.10 En 1938, estimulado por el volumen de Pollard y Redgrave, el proceso de microfilmación del patrimonio impreso de Inglaterra comenzó en serio – fue un proyecto concebido como una empresa comercial, pero también claramente motivado por el deseo de garantizar la preservación de materiales raros y aumentar el acceso a ellos.11 El catálogo de títulos abreviados en sí fue revisado y expandido significativamente en 1976 y 1986, aumentando el número total de impresos conocidos de 26,143 a 36,689.12 En su más reciente encarnación, el STC se ha puesto a disposición del público sin cargo alguno como recurso electrónico (ESTC),13 mientras que Early English Books Online (EEBO), un recurso disponible sólo a través de suscripción, ofrece ediciones que permiten búsqueda de texto de casi todos los registros del catálogo y desde cualquier lugar del globo.14 El ESTC y sus iniciativas asociadas representan el patrón oro, por así decir, de los proyectos bibliográficos. Como consecuencia, el mundo de la publicación en inglés es uno de los más investigados y mejor conocidos en Europa. El ESTC ha gozado de varias ventajas que ayudan a explicar su desarrollo relativamente rápido. La producción impresa, aunque alta per cápita, fue en términos reales bastante modesta – sobre todo en comparación con los ámbitos más importantes de Italia, Alemania y Francia. una de las curiosas particularidad de la supervivencia del libro en el ámbito de publicación inglesa es que existen ejemplares de un alto porcentaje de las obras en un pequeño número de colecciones principales en Gran Bretaña y Norteamérica. Pero, por encima de otras ventajas, el ESTC ha demostrado una capacidad envidiable de cultivar el apoyo y la cooperación de estudiosos y bibliotecarios de todo el mundo, quienes continúan ayudando a actualizar y refinar sus registros. En muchos sentidos, el éxito del ESTC se basa en el hecho de que ha sido aceptado por la comunidad de estudiosos y ha sido visto como un recurso vivo. Iberian Books: Puntos fuertes y limitaciones El objetivo de IB ha sido agrupar información que permanecía dispersa. Ha integrado información de catálogos colectivos, catálogos en línea y publicados en papel de colecciones individuales así como bibliografías analíticas especializadas de centros y talleres de publicación. Una lista completa de las bibliografías especializadas consultadas así como las bibliotecas inspeccionadas se puede encontrar al final de esta introducción. Además de compilar información para crear un recurso unificado, el resultado de todas estas investigaciones ha sido un aumento significativo al corpus de las ediciones, estados y números conocidos – incluyendo todos aquellos centros de publicación que habían sido bien investigados por las bibliografías analíticas modernas.15 IB también ha podido ofrecer un mapa mucho más completo del que había sido posible trazar para ejemplares existentes a través de su censo de más de 1320 bibliotecas en todo el mundo. La importancia de emprender un censo global de ejemplares comprendiendo una variedad de colecciones queda demostrada en la sorprendente estadística que cerca de una cuarta parte de los registros incluidos en IB no tienen un ejemplar existente en ninguna biblioteca española o portuguesa. Las colecciones más importantes fuera de la Península incluyen (en orden de importancia): la British Library en Londres, la Bibliothèque Nationale en París, Harvard Uni-

versity Libraries, la Biblioteca Nacional de México, la Bodleian Library en Oxford, la Biblioteca Nacional en Vienna, las Cambridge University libraries, la Biblioteca nazionale centrale Vittorio Emanuele II en Roma, y la Bayerische Staatsbibliothek en Munich. Mientras que todas las bibliotecas mencionadas arriba representan los acervos más significativos de la publicación ibérica de la temprana edad moderna en todo el mundo, vale la pena resaltar la importancia de colecciones pequeñas o de tamaño mediano. Tales colecciones muchas veces contienen artículos únicos o raros que con frecuencia han sido ignorados por la comunidad académica. Por ejemplo, de los 125 libros mencionados en el inventario que nos proporcionó en marzo de 2009 Renae Satterley, bibliotecaria de libros raros de la Honourable Society of the Middle Temple en Londres, 6 de ellos era únicos, mientras que de otros 24 sólo se conocen menos de 5 ejemplares existentes. Se espera, por lo tanto, que IB ofrezca un recurso útil a la comunidad académica. Se debe admitir, sin embargo, su editor, más que nadie, está consciente de sus limitaciones. No fue posible simplemente por razones financieras examinar físicamente todos los registros de la lista. A menos que un libro haya sido identificado como perteneciente al siglo quince o dieciséis en un catálogo en línea o publicado o esté incluido en alguna de las grandes bibliografías, tal vez haya pasado desapercibido. Evolución futura: IB y el Universal Short-Title Catalogue Project Es importante enfatizar que este catálogo en pasta dura representa la primera edición de IB. Se espera, sin embargo, que la comunidad académica, los bibliotecarios, los libreros y los coleccionistas privados encuentren suficiente mérito en esta iniciativa para que no sólo hagan uso de sus resultados en su investigación, sino que también ayuden a su desarrollo, sugiriendo añadiduras y refinamientos. Un proyecto de esta naturaleza sólo puede evolucionar de manera exitosa a través de un esfuerzo conjunto. Esperamos que el catálogo en línea pueda aparecer en los próximos años. Sin embargo, era apropiado que la primera edición apareciera en formato impreso. Después de todo, un catálogo que celebra el rico legado impreso de España y Portugal no debe por su cuenta contribuir a aumentar la desaparición del libro impreso. Hay una relación intangible pero en realidad bellamente fortuita entre el lector y el libro impreso que es difícil de emular en formato electrónico. También, por supuesto, está la cuestión del estatus de las publicaciones en línea versus las publicaciones impresas, con todas las consecuencias del medio en la percepción del usuario. Aunque todos reconocen el valor de las publicaciones electrónicas, aun sucede que un recurso impreso que lleva un sello de prestigio tendrá más posibilidades de ser reseñado en revistas académicas y, por lo tanto, de llegar a la atención de los colegas en la comunidad académica. Se espera que la versión en línea de IB sea aceptada como un recurso orgánico que pueda responder a la demanda de sus usuarios. IB Online también funcionará en colaboración con una iniciativa bibliográfica realmente innovadora que actualmente se está llevando a cabo en el Reformation Studies Institute de la Universidad de St Andrews en Escocia. El proyecto The Universal Short-Title Catalogue Project (USTC), con el patrocinio del Arts and Humanities Research Council proveerá un panorama de valor único de todo el material impreso en Europa antes del 1601.16 Para este propósito, aprovechará el poder de bases de datos existentes, tales como el English Short-Title Catalogue, el proyecto en evolución Edit 1617 que cubre las publicaciones italianas, VD1618 que cubre las publicaciones alemanas, y French Vernacular Books que ha hecho un recuento de todos los libros impresos en francés antes de 1601.19 Además, el proyecto USTC analizará todos los campos que aún no han sido cubiertos adecuadamente por un catálogo – incluyendo libros en latín impresos en Francia, así como la publicación de los Países Bajos y del Europa del Este. Dentro de unos cuantos años, los estudiosos tendrán los recursos necesarios para explorar los límites y la poética de cada campo de publicación. También podrán comparar las culturas de publicación. Por ejemplo, será posible medir el grado de interés en diferentes temas o categorías de publicación en diferentes áreas o para considerar el movimiento de textos a través de Europa. En particular, el USTC ayudará a los académicos a entender el mercado del libro en latín que se desarrolló tanto en los mercados internacionales como nacionales. Sólo con los avances recientes en cobertura bibliográfica será posible para los académicos explorar el mundo transnacional del libro en la temprana edad moderna en Europa. El catálogo: Método de descripción Los registros en este catálogo están en orden alfabético bajo el nombre del autor principal. Cuando hay más de un autor, el libro aparece citado sólo una vez. Sin embargo, un robusto sistema de referencias cruzadas también ha sido implementado para ayudar al lector. Distintas obras de un solo autor aparecen en orden cronológico en lugar de aparecer bajo el título. En los casos donde no se menciona al autor pero el autor puede ser identificado con seguridad, las obras aparecen junto con las obras principales de ese autor. Obras de autores extranjeros aparecen bajo el nombre principal en lugar de aparecer bajo su traductor o editor español o portugués. La ortografía de los nombres corresponde a la forma estandarizada de la lengua de su país de nacimiento. En el caso de obras de autor desconocido, esas aparecen registradas bajo un encabezado derivado del título o del tema. Las obras de la Iglesia católica aparecen bajo el encabezado Ecclesia Catholica y se subdividen de ahí en adelante, por ejemplo, Ecclesia Catholica – Rituale o Ecclesia Catholica – Breviarium. Las leyes y ordenanzas oficiales se agrupan bajo

Los nombres de lugares, en todos los casos, aparecen en su equivalente moderno local (por ejemplo, Ecclesia Catholica – Breviarium – Salamanca). Los títulos cortos no han sido modernizados, por lo cual, no se han añadido acentos. A continuación, los registros proporcionan el lugar de edición, la información del editor y la fecha de publicación, de ser conocidos. La fuente bibliográfica ha sido indicada para las obras de las cuales no existe ejemplar alguno. Siguiendo las prácticas usuales en catálogos de títulos abreviados, adoptadas por las limitaciones de espacio, las referencias no han sido incluidas para la mayoría de los libros en la lista. Cuando dos registros parecen ser idénticos o muy semejantes en lo que respecta a su descripción básica, se ha incluido una nota para explicar la diferenciación. Cuando en una bibliografía dos registros aparecen separados pero la razón de la separación no es clara, se cita la referencia bibliográfica. Al final del catálogo aparecen dos índices – un índice cronológico y un índice de lugar de publicación y editor. Las fechas de actividad de cada casa de publicación han sido incluidas, derivadas de la información de este catálogo. Ediciones, emisiones y estados Esta bibliografía se construye bajo el mismo principio del primer catálogo en esta serie de Brill, French Vernacular Books, ya que los registros bibliográficos de las distintas emisiones y estados de un libro aparecen por separado. Se ha adoptado este modelo por dos motivos principales. En primer lugar, IB registra cerca de 19,800 libros sin haber tenido el beneficio de un examen físico cuidadoso de las obras descritas. En tales circunstancias, combinar estados y emisiones corre el riesgo de confundir las ediciones. En segundo lugar, al separar los registros de esta manera, IB puede llamar la atención de manera más efectiva al fenómeno de la publicación en el siglo dieciséis, cuando costos financieros de producir una edición muchas veces eran compartidos por editores e impresores. La Figura 1 proporciona un panorama amplio de los patrones de la producción de libros de 1472 a 1600. La información se basa en cada publicación individual. Esto quiere decir que a un folio grande que llevaría meses producir y a un pequeño romance de cuatro páginas se les da el mismo peso. Actualmente se empieza a considerar la perspectiva que el análisis basado en el número de hojas da una visión mucho más sofisticada de las dimensiones de la producción. Sin embargo, este tipo de investigación está un paso más adelante del lugar donde este proyecto se sitúa actualmente. Debemos también suspender, por el momento, cualquier discusión sobre los distintos grados de pérdida o supervivencia de las distintas categorías de impresos, que, sin duda alguna, han tenido un impacto sobre nuestros números.21 El primer libro impreso en España que sobrevive fue el Sinodal de Aguilafuente, publicado para un obispo local en la ciudad de Segovia en junio de 1472.22 Todavía pasaría una década y media antes de que la imprenta llegara a Portugal.23 Aunque un número modesto de 20 Una primera versión de este ensayo fue presentada en la Conferencia Sixteenth Century Studies llevada a cabo en Ginebra en mayo de 2009. 21 Para tener una idea de cómo tales consideraciones pueden afectar nuestras ideas sobre la producción, consultar Alexander S. ediciones se publicaron en las décadas de 1470, fue en las décadas de 1480 y 1490 que se dio un crecimiento constante de la publicación en la Península. A principios del siglo XVI, la producción total se niveló, publicándose casi el mismo número de libros entre 1501–1510 como en 1491–1500. Sin embargo, el gráfico muestra una desigualdad más notable en los números anuales. Puede suponerse que estas erráticas estadísticas de la producción anual pueden explicarse en gran parte por los distintos tamaños de las obras publicadas. Dada la importancia de retener la mano de obra calificada, la capacidad de producción probablemente siguió siendo la misma, aunque el número de títulos publicados variaba año por año. La industria estaba organizada de manera mucho más estable de lo que estas estadísticas cronológicas sugieren a primera vista.24 Aunque no está claro a partir del gráfico, hay un aumento de un 36 por ciento en la producción del periodo 1510–1520. A partir de ahí, los niveles de producción permanecieron constantes durante dos décadas hasta la década de 1540,25 antes de verificarse un segundo aumento del 37 por ciento entre la década de 1540 y 1550. Hubo un aumento del 20 por ciento en la producción entre 1570 y 1580, con un aumento de un 23 por ciento más entre las décadas de 1580 y 1590. En este patrón general de intervalos de consolidación seguido de aumentos escalonados, hay también un número de anomalías interesantes que vale la pena comentar. La drástica disminución que aparece en 1500–1501 es, a pesar de las apariencias, una consecuencia de la atribución moderna de fechas, ya que los libreros y bibliógrafos a veces optan por la fecha anterior de 1500 para poder catalogar un libro como incunable. Esta cuestión de tendencias en la atribución quizá también pueda estar detrás del marcado aumento de producción en 1520, la última fecha registrada en el Descriptive Catalogue of Printing in Spain and Portugal de Norton.26 Tal razón evidente, sin embargo, no puede usarse para explicar el colapso de la producción que ocurre en 1522. Esto quizá fue resultado de la sobreproducción de 1520. Sin embargo, es posible que esta disminución también haya sido el resultado de un choque de varios otros factores, incluyendo el rápido ritmo de migración de España hacia el Nuevo Mundo27 y el impacto de la revuelta comunera de 1520–1522. La revuelta, como se sabe, tuvo un impacto negativo sobre el comercio en toda España, incluyendo la industria editorial. Por ejemplo, la ciudad de Medina del Campo, que tenía una feria importante dos veces por año, fue destruida por incendios a finales de 1520.28 Es difícil determinar sin mayor investigación si los acontecimientos de estos años llevaron a un estancamiento de la industria que vemos hasta la década de 1540, o si la industria realmente había entrado en un periodo de consolidación puntuado por una anomalía en 1520–1522. Inclusive un vistazo rápido a las estadísticas deja translucir la sorprendente energía que vuelve a la industria desde la década de 1540 y hasta el año de 1556. Pero en ese momento, nuevamente, ocurre un desastre. La causa de esta decadencia, sin embargo, tiene una explicación más clara – una gran recesión económica. de su padre, resultado de guerras extranjeras combinadas con una inflación desenfrenada.29 El Rey tuvo que declarar al Estado en bancarrota en 1557 y 1560. Los impuestos que existían aumentaron y se introdujeron nuevos impuestos. Tales medidas afectaron a las industrias de manufactura y al consumidor de manera negativa. Le llevó cerca de una década a la industria de la publicación recuperarse de su posición anterior. El año de 1585 marcó un hito en el cual la producción comenzó a entrar en un periodo de expansión relativamente rápida hasta el final del siglo XVI y principios del XVII. La única perturbación a este patrón es un aumento inusual en 1588. Habría sido bastante emocionante reportar una correlación entre este aumento en la producción de ese año y los acontecimientos relacionados con la Armada. Sin embargo, este aumento probablemente es un ejemplo de una corrección de mercado. En general, sin embargo, en España y Portugal, podemos ver un ejemplo de la industria de publicación dónde los niveles de consumo fueron influidos principalmente por factores tales como el crecimiento de la población, el aumento de la alfabetización y ritmos económicos más generales. En este sentido, la Península representa un interesante caso de estudio en la cultura de la publicación en Europa que no fue apoyada por acontecimientos históricos que sirvieron como poderosos motores. Las polémicas batallas de la Reforma alemana en la década de 1520 o las Guerras de Religión en Francia en la década de 1560 afectaron profundamente las culturas de publicación de esos países. En España y Portugal, no hubo crisis comparables que tuvieran un impacto en la esfera pública. La estructura de la industria Volvamos ahora nuestra atención a la estructura de la industria de la publicación en la Península. El trabajo llevado a cabo para IB ha hecho posible que adoptemos una visión macroscópica. Como en otros lugares de Europa, la estructura a largo plazo de la industria se formó en la época de los incunables.30 Comenzando a operar en cierto número de lugares tales como Murcia y Segovia donde no existía un mercado sustentable, la publicación fue concentrándose al final en los centros urbanos más importantes de España y Portugal. Tal vez una de la más sorprendentes características de la industria de la publicación de la manera en que se desarrolló en la península fue la vitalidad de los múltiples centros de publicación. A ese respecto, sigue más el modelo alemán que los modelos francés o inglés.31 Es verdadero afirmar que Sevilla fue el más importante centro de producción impresa hasta principios de la década de 1550 (dominado sin duda por las imprentas Cromberger),32 pero su liderazgo fue sustituido primero por Salamanca hasta la década de 1580, y después por Madrid, en las dos últimas décadas del siglo. Vale la pena resaltar, sin embargo, que esas ciudades no dominaron la producción de libros de la misma manera que, por ejemplo, París o Lyon dominaron la producción en Francia, o Londres dominó la producción en Inglaterra. Había alrededor de 12 centros de publicación importantes que producían por lo menos el 75 por ciento de todos los libros publicados en la Península o en español o portugués antes de 1601.
