Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt
Chapter One Ra commands your presence. Kat immediately obeyed the order. For anyone else, she might have argued. She had just come off a mission, a successful one, and her body and mind cried for rest. Ra, however, ruled her soul. She would lay down her life for her lord and master. As Kat navigated the underground passages to the inner sanctum, her ears perked to the sound of cabs and cars hurtling along the Las Vegas Strip, dice rolling, laughter and chips being doled out by slot machines. Nightlife hummed in a raucous cacophony above in the human world while below the quiet ebb of the ancient world flowed. Each step seemed to echo, bouncing off the walls carefully painted with hieroglyphs reflecting their heritage. Each panel told the tale of her people’s rise and fall. The story had become so ingrained in every fiber of her being that Kat no longer took notice of the murals. She rounded the last bend to face two immense gold paneled doors etched with the all‐seeing eye of Horus, Ra’s symbol of protection and royal power. Her eyes flashed to the Sun Moon twins. The two warriors stood vigil on either side of the golden doors. Sentinels for Ra, the sun god, they radiated power. Mighty lions in their own right, Kat acknowledged them.
5
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt The dark lion remained silent and rigid as a statue. His brother, the golden lion greeted her. “Ra has been expecting you.” Uneasy, though she couldn’t explain why, she watched the massive doors part. The scent of blood hit her first. Like a fireball to the gut, the scent nearly doubled her over. Inside, her beast rose. Her skin itched. Claws slid from her fingertips. The lioness within her roared for action. Kat sucked in a breath and steeled herself. The scent hit again, saturating her pores. Canine. Her lips curled back. “Dog.” She forced her beast back under control. A faint stirring brushed her mind. Paralyzed from the phantom hand through her psychic shield, Kat felt fear for the first time. Nobody should be able to enter her mind. The big cat in her hissed. Ra’s personal space of worship, usually peaceful and calm, vibrated with an undertone of discord. Whatever lay beyond in the obelisk, would be dealt with. She had no doubts about that. Kat, Stealer of Memories, strode into Ra’s shrine. Kat would never grow used to the awesome power she felt every time she came before her king. A deity, Ra, the sun god of the old world, scrutinized her with kohl‐lined eyes. “So glad you could join us.” He lounged back in a leather chair with a martini clutched in his golden ringed hand. Sekhmet, his daughter and bringer of divine retribution and vengeance, stood by his side. The six‐foot tall woman with high cheekbones and Nubian looks turned her slanted cat eyes on Kat. Her wrath was known to be as awesome as her beauty. Her lips curled back in a snarl.“ Once again, Ra is willing to overlook your less than exemplary record. Of course, should you fail him…” Claws, every bit as sharp and long as Kat’s, shot out from Sekhmet’s fingers. She sliced
6
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt the air a few times, her message clear. Kat bit her tongue. She knew her place. She dared not offend the lead lioness of her pride. “My lord, Ra.” Kat bowed before the dais, observing the proper respect due to the leader of the Bast Sect. She straightened, braced her feet, and put her hands behind her back. Her claws remained extended. Despite Sekhmet’s presence, Kat would not retract them until assured there was no imminent danger to Ra or herself. By not so much as a flicker did she show her knowledge of the man being tortured a few feet away. Stripped to the waist and tethered between two columns, he groaned in pain. The sound of a whip cracked against flesh. It shouldn’t have bothered her. Shouldn’t have affected her in any way, yet her cat continued to tear at her insides. It had to be the smell of the enemy. The wounded animal excited her lioness. She forced her focus back on Ra. His presence always humbled her, reminded her how she owed her fidelity to him. Without him she and the pride would be nothing. “We have a problem, Kat. Our compound has been infiltrated,” Ra said over the rim of his glass. “By an Anubian dog it seems.” Ra nodded his head. “For Anubis to send one of his men here means he searches for something of great importance. We must know what he seeks.” “They want to see us destroyed.” Kat’s muscles tensed in anger. “Perhaps,” Ra responded noncommittally, “but I fear this signals the start of a new war between our peoples.” He rose with feline grace and stood before her, his long hair brushing his back, his ageless face filled with wisdom and knowledge none of them could ever hope to possess. The weight of their peopleʹs fate rested on his shoulders. “I leave the methods to you and Tor.” He looked to the eager young male with the whip in his hand. “Protect our people.”
7
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt He took Sekhmet by her slender hand and glided to a door barely visible in the wall decoration. Together they disappeared through it. Kat turned to witness Tor in action. Sekhmet’s son was as vicious as his mother. Ra’s grandson and next in line to the throne, he reveled in his position of power. Young, by standards of the pride, he was only a few centuries old. In comparison to most other teenage lions, he was no slacker and did not leave the pride to venture off on escapades in the city above. He took his status seriously. Tor raised the whip and cracked it against skin. Blood spattered onto the walls covering inscriptions. The victim panted heavily; another line marred his dark back. She couldn’t see the face of the prisoner. A black hood covered the Anubian’s head except for two holes cut out for the eyes. Blue piercing eyes filled with pain stared out at her, following her movement. She growled at him. All Anubians were the enemy. Anubis’ pack of dogs had for centuries sought the pride’s destruction. Little sympathy could be given to the fool who had trespassed on cat’s territory. Let alone try to penetrate the stronghold. Again, an intrusion stabbed into her mind like a dagger. She staggered back a foot, her hand coming up to her temple. The pain subsided, and she felt grateful that Tor hadn’t noticed her weakness. End this, the voice floated through her mind. Who are you? she sent back along the same mental path, angry and frightened that someone had tapped into her mind. Kat, Stealer of Memories, entered people’s minds not the other way around. She shored up her mental defenses. Still, the enemy pushed and broke through. Aait‐Shesheta! Her ears rang with the shattering of her psychic shields. So long had it been since she had been acknowledged as a priestess in ancient Egyptian.
8
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Leather slapped against flesh. “Who sent you, dog?” Tor commanded. “I’ll strip the flesh off you piece by piece. You’ll talk. You’ll beg to tell me everything.” Muscles bunched as the whip came down again. Kat’s stomach lurched. The push came stronger nearly bringing her to her knees. The cat in her tensed, her muscles tightened up, and only sheer will kept her on her feet. Get out of my head! Free me, and I’ll stop channeling my pain into you. Kat would not be commanded, especially not by a lowly dog. Anger welled up. She used the energy to carve hieroglyphics in the air. She drew the symbols, focusing on her mind, strengthening her shields. “Enough,” she suddenly roared, finally pushing the enemy out of her head. Tor paused. He lowered the whip. His gaze raked her with contempt. “You don’t give orders to me, Kat.” “This is getting us nowhere.” Kat said. She walked forward, unable to find the calm that usually grounded her. Her eyes surveyed the prisoner, his body strong just like his will. He dripped blood and power. This was no easy man to defeat. But everyone had a breaking point. She walked up. Kat placed her hand under the hood and cradled his jaw in her hand. “Who are you?” She forced him to look into her eyes. Circling pools of blue looked directly at her, stealing her breath. She felt herself drowning in his gaze. Stop! Kat cried out in her mind. He released her from his hold but she still felt his presence lingering. It shook her to the core, but she would not let the dog catch a whiff of it. Instead she pushed harder into his mind, letting her lioness growl. The dog backed off. With Tor watching her through narrowed eyes, she had to watch

Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt herself. “We need the information fast. There must be a better, more effective way.” “You’re right,” Tor agreed, a feral smile touching his lips. “Steal it from his mind.”

Chapter Two Kat frowned. The process could be painful, even damaging at times. Given he so easily tapped into her psychic link, what if it all went wrong? Kat didn’t dare let Tor or the prisoner sense her doubts. Weakness would not be tolerated and would only lead to her further downfall within the pride. Kat centered her mind, imagining herself in a pool of tranquility. Gradually, she sent her senses out seeking until they brushed up against the strangerʹs mind. His defenses stood sturdy. She continued to push, knowing it would cause him pain, but determination rode her. It had nothing to do with her people and everything to do with this man. This enemy. She looked for a chink. A small hole she could exploit. Then a crack opened. Triumph filled her as she aimed her mental path in that direction. Memories hit her full blown. A man and a woman locked in an embrace. Heat. Lips, hands moving everywhere. Passion exploding. The woman arched her neck to allow the man better access to her throat. Kat stared into her own face, her eyes dilated with passion, and yanked herself out.
11
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Her breath came in short bursts. Tor stared at her strangely. Kat ignored him. Frantically, she searched her mind for similar memories. There were none. How was it possible? How could this man possess such memories of the two of them when she had none? She held power. The Stealer of Memories. It should be impossible for anyone to manipulate his mind against hers. What did it mean? If she couldn’t break this man’s defenses, her position, already shaky with the pride, would worsen. “What are the Anubians seeking?ʺ Tor asked. Patience the least of his virtues, he raised his whip ready to beat out the man’s secrets. Kat ignored Tor, annoyed by his penchant for destroying all in his path who defied him. Deep down, she knew this unfortunate creature chained to the wall didn’t stand a chance. A shame, for his body held a rugged handsomeness the males in her pride lacked. Under the hood, her hand moved softly over his cheek and down over his chin. He never looked away from her. The man pulled against his tethers and inhaled her scent. She did the same. Her body grew warm and heavy. The cat in her wanted to brush up against the male. She pulled her hand away disgusted at her reaction to a dog. She stole into his memory hard and furious not caring about the pain of extraction. Full force he pushed back giving up his memories in a flood. She choked on them, too much too fast. Kat struggled to make sense of what she received. She fought against the tide when all of a sudden he slammed a gate down on the memories pouring into her. He walled up his psychic channel. Her mouth agape, she pulled out of his mind. Only once before had she come up against one so dominant. She didn’t need to sort through the memories to figure out who was before her. Her cat lay back on its haunches and acknowledged another Aait‐Shesheta.
12
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt She yanked off the hood. His features were not those found on the cover of magazines but of astuteness and strength like those of classic Grecian fighters. Nikos. Keeper of Secrets. From the corner of her eye, she saw Tor raise his whip. With cat reflexes she moved in front of the prisoner. Torʹs face registered his shock. “You dare to shield this repugnant beast.” “He is Nikos, the Keeper of Secrets. He is Anubis’ personal priest.” “Then we should kill him. We don’t know what he plans to whisper into the ear of the Lord of the Underworld.” Kat paid Tor no attention, her mind riveted on her enemy’s identity. Nikos. Why had he come? A dog had no chance of getting into the cat compound undetected. A suicide mission at best. “Only a stupid man or a desperate one would dare to enter the lion’s den. Which are you?” She slowly walked around the columns, taking note of how securely his wrists and ankles were bound. Tor had used braided sinew, strong and unyielding, the ropes cutting into Nikosʹ limbs. She ran a claw down his spine. His back bowed under her touch. Tor watched them with glittering eyes. Why have you come? She didn’t wait for his answer. She paid attention to Tor, noting his hunger to rip into Nikos. “I think you must be both. Worse, you’re a pathetic dog.” She moved her claws along his outstretched arm and over his bicep. He panted heavily under her touch. Tor smacked his lips. Free me. You’ve got to be kidding. Betray my people for a dog? I donʹt think so.
13
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Nikos growled. He turned his head to the side and gnashed his teeth at her. Tor raised his whip. “Answer her!” “Seems the cat has caught the dog’s tongue.” She stepped aside. “He’s all yours, Tor.” “No!” Nikos heaved out. Kat put her hand out and stepped in front of Nikos. She looked him dead in the eyes. He glared back, and she clearly heard the bite in his words as they floated into her head. You owe me. You owe Bast. She couldn’t deny that. Before Ra, Kat had pledged her fidelity to his daughter, Bast, originator of the cat clan—her mistress, her queen and mother of her people. I owe you nothing. Have you so easily forgotten the past? Fear gripped her. She had not revisited her past in centuries. The memories too painful to extract, buried deep inside her, she had closed the doors to them long ago. She had no intention of revisiting them now with Nikos. Yet, next to Ra, Nikos was the one man she owed her life to. He’d defended her when most everyone had willingly condemned her for not protecting Bast. Some still did. While others, like Sekhmet, wouldn’t let her forget. An Aait‐Shesheta honors her debt. “What is taking so long?” Tor whined. Kat was sharply reminded of Tor’s presence. Her head throbbed and, from a place deep down inside, a pressure built, a compulsion grew. She had to save this man. It didn’t matter he was the enemy. It didn’t matter she would betray her people. She had to save this man. She tried to fight the compulsion, but it only made her head hurt more. Was he doing this to her?
14
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Her gaze flew to his. She didn’t sense power emanating from him. Still the need to save him swamped her until she knew she had no choice but to obey. Her decision made, Kat thrust into Tor’s mind and gripped it. His hands came to his head. She didn’t shield him. With claws she dug in and stripped images, deleting his memory. She didn’t bother to plant a fake story. Ra and Sekhmet would be back and discover her duplicity. It was treason. It meant betrayal to all those she had pledged to protect. Tor crumpled to the ground. Kat leaped into action and sliced through the ropes. Free of his bonds, Nikos stood before her, resonating power and confidence. Most curious of all, he flashed the smile of a man who knew he had won.

Chapter Three With the Sun Moon twins likely guarding the door, Kat chose to escape through Ra’s personal access route. She led Nikos through the door concealed in the wall. She could sense him behind her. Smell him. Dog’s blood. It should have sickened her. Made her rethink the insanity of what she was doing. Instead, it seemed to reach down and pull at her feminine side. Unacceptable. She drew in a steadying breath as she set a hard pace through the narrow tunnel. She didn’t bother looking back. Didn’t dare. Her keen eyes peered through the darkness. A nocturnal creature she was attuned to the dark. “You’d better keep up, or we’re both dead.ʺ She spoke in a low voice. Only a few of Ra’s elite council were allowed access to these passageways. That kept the chances of meeting someone down but not out. “I can keep up.” Nikosʹ deep voice rippled over her skin. Her cat purred. She cursed her beast and forced herself to focus. They were coming up to a fork. Kat motioned Nikos to stop as she edged her way forward. Ra’s private chambers lay along the left branch. The right
16
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt branch led to freedom. She peered to the right and noted the corridor was empty. Her heart pounded in her chest. Nikos’ scent wafted to her. Familiar. Comforting. Sexy. She cut off the thought. For the first time, she took a good look at the man she had risked her life for. He stood tall, lines of pain marking his mouth. Blood from Tor’s whip slashes mixed with sweat and glistened against his dark skin. She had the absurd impulse to lick the wounds clean. To rub herself against him. Damn it. Where was all this sexual heat coming from? Those memories of the two of them locked in passion…she broke off the image. Her temples throbbed lightly. She forced herself to think how they could get out of this mess. “My people will pick up your scent a mile away. I must be insane to be doing this.” Deep below, her cat growled in disagreement. “You had no choice, and you know it. So what’s the plan?” The plan was not to get caught. She’d made the decision to free Nikos for reasons she didn’t quite grasp. Instinct? She had no choice now but to live with it. Although how long either of them would live if she didn’t find a way to square things with her people remained to be seen. She turned her eyes on him, assessing the damage. Sweat and blood marred his chest. She knew his back carried more of the same. Without thought, her fingers smoothed over a slash on his chest. His blood stained her fingertip. She placed it in her mouth. He tasted sweet. A jolt of bittersweet memories choked her. His face swam before her. She saw him dressed in the priest robes of the past. He gently wiped a tear off her cheek, and she watched as he brought the shimmering teardrop to his mouth and sipped. His hand tipped her chin up, and then his head blotted out the sun or was it that she closed her eyes, she didn’t know. But she could feel his lips on her own as if it had happened in this moment in time. The pain in her head intensified. “What have you done to me?”
17
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt she cried. His eyes narrowed on her face and softened. “Nothing. Like you, I’ve been hurting for a long time.” Kat bit down hard on her lower lip, the pain clearing her head. She felt unsteady, uncertain. Qualities she never associated with herself. But she couldn’t go back. She had to go forward. “I need to know if you can run,” Kat asked him. “Yes. Why?” “I need you to run about two thirds down the left passage then retrace your steps and run down the right. Theyʹre going to smell you no matter what we do. Might as well confuse them as to which way you went.” She watched Nikos gather his energy. He whispered a spell to rid himself of his pants and shifted, effortlessly and without sound. Fur spilled from within outward, reshaping him into a massive hound. The breed extinct, it had been forever it seemed since Kat had last seen an ancient Molossian with its long muzzle, wide jaw and paws big enough to bring down a bear. Then, with blurring motion, he took off. Kat sucked in a breath. The canine beast disturbed her on so many levels. She positioned herself at the head of the right branch. When she caught sight of him heading toward her, she joined with him. Swifter than thought, he reshaped in mid‐stride and came up beside her. She glimpsed his healing wounds, tight buttocks and hard muscles before he invoked the hieroglyphic spell that clothed him in black leather pants. Even bloodied, the man was too good looking for her peace of mind. Stop when I tell you. She didn’t like using their mental path. It implied an intimacy she didn’t want to acknowledge. But with cats everywhere, she couldn’t afford to talk anymore and draw attention to them. She put on a burst of speed to pass him. At the next bend, there’s a niche. Head for it. They came to the bend,
18
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt and Kat slipped into the cramped space. She didn’t know how long they had before her treachery became known to all. Her stomach lurched at the thought. Nikos joined her, and she immediately realized her mistake. A secret escape route for Ra that led out of the luxury hotel and casino, the niche hadn’t been built for two people. At least not when one of them had shoulders that took up more than half the space. His bare chest and muscular thighs pressed up against hers. You’re crowding me. Give me room to breathe. Kat eyed the massive door. There was no doorknob or visible locks. She moved her hand against the door, trying to remember the combination. Do I disturb you, Kat‐nip? His voice caressed her mind. No. Yes. She didn’t want to go there and latched onto another complaint instead. Don’t call me that. I am nothing to you. And get a shirt on, would you? Nikos reached out and with one finger drew a soft line from her temple to her jaw. Once you were something. Surely, you haven’t forgotten? His eyebrow rose quizzically. Kat slapped his hand away. You saved me. I saved you. We’re even. When this is through, we can go back to being enemies. She breathed deeply to get herself under control. Control meant everything. She had to focus on the door. You deny what we had so many centuries ago when you served your goddess? At the mention of her beloved goddess Bast, pain hammered at her heart. Guilt flooded her being. Her cat howled in mourning. Kat shoved the pain aside, using all her willpower. Ever since sheʹd discovered the identity of the man beneath the hood, she felt as if her entire world had tilted upside down. And she didn’t like it one damn bit. I don’t know what kind of game you’re playing, but it ends now. What do you Anubians want? Why are you here? For a moment, she didn’t think he would answer. His lips
19
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt tightened. He reached up and grasped her upper arms. Blue eyes blazed down upon her. My master has sent me to learn the location of a package Bast left behind. Youʹre still not telling me anything. What a curious kitty you are. All right, Kat, the truth is I want you. And I’m not leaving without you.

Chapter Four Well, you can’t have me. Nikos looked at the woman he held in his arms, inhaling her scent. He had never forgotten her allure. A mixture of intelligence and strength, with just a hint of vulnerability to knock a man to his knees, she made him salivate. He’d fallen hard once. He couldn’t afford to do it again. But he could use what they had at one time to get the information he needed. His lord Anubis depended on him. In fact, he’d made it clear that Nikos was not to return without the information Anubis wanted. And she wasn’t immune to him. He’d felt her tremble under his touch. The problem came down to time. He had none. Which was why he had penetrated the stronghold. A drastic decision, but one that had paid off. Once he rekindled the flames of their passion, she would deny him nothing. We need to make our escape soon. He inched closer, until his chest almost touched hers. To his amusement, she tried to step back, only to come up against the locked door behind her. There is no us. She shot back. You leave, and the score is even. My debt is paid. You go back and tell Anubis you failed.
21
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt And what will you do? Your people will crucify you. As he spoke, he let his thumbs caress her satin skin where his hands still clasped her arms. That’s none of your business. He continued to caress and watched the pulse in her throat beat a tattoo rhythm. Nervous? Any minute a whole army of cats could grab our ass and rip us to shreds. Anyone with a normal brain would be concerned. She paused a beat. Oh, I forgot, you’re a dog. You operate on a simpler level than we more evolved creatures. He let the sarcasm roll off him, enjoying the sparks shooting from her dark eyes. She exuded a sexuality that made the beast in him howl with the need to mate. His skin itched. The pain he’d been holding back receded even further, replaced by thoughts of taking her up against the wall. Pounding into her until neither of them knew who was cat and who was dog. Blood trickled down his chest. Her eyes tracked the movement. He could feel himself swell. All it took was one look from this woman and he wanted. But this time he would be in control. He would take, and he would be the one to walk away when he’d had enough. Put your mouth on me. Taste me as you once did. He saw her eyes dilate. The way her pulse sped up even further. He wanted to wrap himself around her. In her. Time and his injuries prevented it. He could remind her of what they’d once had. Gently, he pressed his lower body against hers, letting her feel his desire for her. Her eyes widened, and her breath grew short. He rocked against her. Once. Twice. Damn if he wasn’t careful, he’d lose all control. Taste me. He watched her head descend. He held his breath and waited. Her mouth barely an inch from his chest, Kat woke up to what
22
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt she was doing and shoved him. He grunted from where her fingers contacted his wounds. The marks had diminished but, underneath the new skin, his flesh was tender. It would take a few more transformations to completely heal. He remained immovable, seemingly drinking in her heat. The narrowness of their hiding place made it impossible to think, to focus. His scent floated around her. She wanted to ignore him and couldn’t. Images flickered at the edges of her mind. She let them go and concentrated on the present. She needed to get rid of Nikos and figure out how to stay alive once her people started hunting her down. I’m disappointed, Kat. I’ve often dreamed of your mouth on me over the centuries. Liar. Get out of my head and stay out! She shoved him out of her mind. Nikos looked offended. “I am Aait‐Shesheta. I don’t lie.” She spoke low through clenched teeth, “That term no longer applies. The modern world has no place for us. Bast is dead.” She concentrated, visualizing the inner works of the door. The symbols slowly materialized in her mind. She wove them over the steel door. The locks rolled. The door would soon open. Nikos brought his arms up to brace against the wall on either side of her head, effectively caging her in. She would not be intimidated by a dog. She gave him her best glare. He dropped his head down until his breath tickled her ear. He spoke softly in the ancient language, words of love, passion and heat. When had she heard them before? Even her cat recognized the sound and sought his touch. Nikos took her lobe between his teeth and began to nibble and lave. Her thoughts scattered. Her body melted. Her cat purred, demanded release. Then she felt the soft brush against her mind again. Just like the locks on Ra’s escape door, the locks inside her mind rolled. Symbols materialized like smoke curling from the embers of a cooling fire. Sema, the symbol of fidelity in love. It clicked into place. A door in her mind long locked
23
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt opened, inviting her in. She saw into her own memories. Nikos held her in an embrace, her legs wrapped around his hips, as he thrust into her. He bent her back and began to suckle her breast. It couldn’t be! She yanked herself away from the image, slamming the door shut. Her claws pushed into the soft flesh of his exposed belly. “I said, stay the hell out of my mind.” He gave her a puzzled look. “You told me to stay out. As another Aait‐Shesheta, I have respected your wish.” She needed room to breath. Where had the memory come from? She rubbed her hands up and down her arms. As strong as Nikos was, he shouldn’t be able to manipulate her mind. But that meant she had a memory she couldn’t recall. A memory locked away in her own mind. What other memories might be hidden? Her stomach churned at the implication. Afraid Nikos would latch upon her confusion and question her, Kat focused back on their escape. “As soon as this door opens, youʹre free.” Nikos merely smiled. “It looks as if we’re at an impasse. When I go through that door, youʹre coming with me.” “Like hell I am. Maybe I should kill you. As far as I’m concerned, the only good dogs are dead ones. Cut my loses now, fall upon Ra’s mercy and blame you for manipulating my mind.” The tips of her claws rested on top his skin, the slightest movement and she could rip his gut open. Nikos threw his head back with a short bark of laughter. “Right. And who will believe a fallen priestess? The same pride of lions who accused you of murder?” Kat turned her head away, not wanting to acknowledge the truth of his words. “Why don’t we make a deal. You give me what I want, and I’ll give you what you want.” He pushed forward unafraid. “Tell me what you want, Kat? Could it be the Heart of Bast?”
24
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt She licked her lips, considering his offer. The moment she’d released Nikos, she’d signed her death warrant. It didn’t matter if she’d felt forced to or not. Her people would never give her another chance. Bringing home Bast’s heart might make up the betrayal to her pride. Her beloved mistress’ body had been desecrated by the Anubians. Her heart and eyes torn from her dead body before the pride could get to her and give her a proper burial. The disgusting dogs had lapped up her precious blood, stealing away into the night with her life essence. The vicious attack perpetrated by the jackal god, Anubis, and his pack was the sole reason the alliance had fallen apart. For centuries, speculation had run rampant regarding the attack by the dogs. They’d desecrated Bast’s remains, but were they behind her murder and the destruction of the temple? No one knew for sure. The fact that Nikos, Keeper of Secrets, knew where the Heart was, though, offered all the proof Kat needed. The Anubians were guilty on all counts. Which meant Kat had to be nuts to think about dealing with a dog. By setting him free, she’d branded herself traitor. Why would she possibly compound it further? For all her mistakes, she’d always tried to live the life of an honorable warrior. And honor was all she had left. Temptation warred with reality. “A dog can’t be trusted.” More than that, the way she reacted to Nikos told her she couldn’t trust herself. On the other hand, she faced certain death if she returned to her people after freeing Nikos. “What guarantee do I have that you’ll hand over the Heart of Bast?” He quirked an eyebrow. “You have my word of honor as an Aait‐Shesheta.” “Let me get this straight. You’re willing to give the Heart into my keeping.” Nikos nodded his head. “And what do you get in return?” “I get you.” His eyes gleamed with desire.
25
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Surely, he wanted more from her than that. Once again, she didn’t feel quite in control. “You better not deceive me. I warn you will pay dearly for tricking me,” she gritted out. She kept her eyes on his, trying to read his thoughts. He kept his expression blank. He had erected shields the size of the Aswan Dam. Could she trust him? According to her memories, she once had. There could be no other explanation for letting this man touch her so intimately. She shook her head, wishing she could conjure up more memories. But she was afraid to look. To go back in the past and unlock more doors, doors that contained enough tears to fill the Nile. Dogs couldn’t be trusted. Dogs had been behind the downfall of the alliance between cats and dogs so many centuries ago. Intrigue and murder on the part of the Anubians destroyed the peace their two peoples had achieved. Nikos had given her his word as a priest he would give her the Heart. She should believe him. She couldn’t. Unless she did the unthinkable. “Do we have a deal?ʺ Nikos asked, keeping his voice bland, though the entire success of his plan rode on her answer. “You give me what I want, and I give you what you want.” Her eyes narrowed on his face. She kept her claws on his stomach. Her threat didn’t stop him from tracing a line from the base of her neck to the valley between her breasts. Her skin fascinated him. He also noted with satisfaction the way her pulse leaped at his touch. “Deal?” he whispered again. “Damn you, yes. You give me the location and, once I have the Heart, I’ll fulfill my pledge to you.” Nikos laughed in disbelief, noting the red tinge to her cheeks. “Nice try, sweetheart. The location is a secret, and I don’t break my honor for anyone. You want the Heart of Bast, youʹre going to have to let me to take you there.” He watched in amusement as frustration chased across her
26
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt features. He intended to enjoy every minute of their time together and extract as much pleasure as he could. This time, when he finished satisfying himself with her, he’d exorcise her out of his system. “Deal,” she finally bit out. He couldn’t resist, he dropped a hard fast kiss on her lips. “To seal it,” he said. She removed the last lock, and the door swung out. Air and noise rushed in. He moved outside cautiously, wondering if an ambush lay in wait. He tasted the air. So far it was free of cats. He looked back. Kat stood just outside the door, her hands gracefully fluttering in a pattern, hieroglyphics sparkling in the air before melting away. “What are you doing?” He barked. “Insurance.” What the hell did she mean by insurance? He’d figure it out later. Right now, they had to get the hell away. The longer they stayed in the area, the more likely they’d get caught. The whipping he’d received would be child’s play compared to what would be doled out next time. And Kat would pay in even worse ways because she had betrayed her own people. “Hurry it up,” he whispered harshly. He advanced a few more feet toward the street when his gut wrenched and his vision swam. His legs strained against an invisible cord wrapped tightly around his being. He whipped his head around again. Kat hadn’t moved an inch. Her cat‐like eyes focused on him, and a small curved smile touched her lips. Nikos knew he was totally screwed.

Chapter Five “Son of a bitch! What’d you do to me, Kat?” He stalked back toward her. Kat tried to move out his reach. “What do you mean?” “I mean I turned into a goddamn jellyfish the second I moved away from you.” His grip closed around the nape of her neck. He forced he her head up, his gaze piercing hers until she lowered her lashes. She tried retreat, but he only tightened his grip. She could easily escape if she had to, she assured herself. Her tongue came out to wet her lips. She felt his erection harden against her stomach. Her eyes flew to his. “My body isn’t on the same wavelength as my brain. Don’t make anything of it.” He gave her a little shake. “I’m waiting, Kat.” A growl rumbled in his throat, indicating his displeasure. “I bound you to me,” she admitted. “Like I said, insurance. You’re an Anubian. I’m not about to trust you or your word.” Nikos shook his head. “A binding spell. You really think you’re a clever cat, don’t you?” His hands shifted into large paws big enough to take down an elephant. “Undo it. Erase it. Get rid of it.” He loomed over her. “Now.” She began to weave the hieroglyphs in the air. She stopped midway. “I don’t think so.”
28
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt She could see his chest swell with rage. He took a step forward. She held her ground. “Release me or you don’t get the Heart of Bast.” “We have a deal. I give you what you want. You give me what I want.” She spat at him angrily. “The spell can’t be broken until the terms of the contract are met. Even you know that.” Nikos smirked. “Oh, you’ll get what you want but not before I get what I want.” He grabbed her wrist and pulled her up close. His blue eyes became liquid swirling pools. Kat tried to pull away, not wanting to be sucked under his spell. Damn it, sheʹd been a fool not to consider this angle. How could she have been so stupid as to bind them? He would take advantage of every second they were together. She would simply have to resist. She could do it. Although this close to him, with his male scent penetrating her pores, she experienced doubts. Kat felt Nikos pushing against her mind, hammering at her shields. And she recognized that resistance against this man, this enemy, would not be easy. A tin can clattered on the concrete, breaking the connection. Both turned their heads in the direction of the sound. A young lion, a teenager not yet fully grown, pounced from one of the dumpsters. Glittering black eyes reflected the bright lights of Vegas. He came down hard and fast, landing on Nikos and taking him down. Nikos! The lion’s jaws clamped down on the nape of his neck. If the big cat killed Nikos while they were still bound, she would die along with him. Kat reacted. She grabbed the cat by his girth and pulled. She could sense the lion’s surprise at her behavior. He let go of Nikos. His mistake. She threw the lion clear of them. He smacked into the dumpster. Nikos was back on his feet. He shifted into a dog, but Nikos was no ordinary dog. Not the typical wolf or jackal that Anubis chose for his pack. He was pure Malossian. An ancient breed of dog gifted
29
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt from Alexander the Great to protect Bast’s temple. Nikos was more than capable of bringing a lion down. The young lion got back on all fours and shook off the hit. He took a look at Nikos and must have considered him no threat. He lunged for Kat, going straight for her throat. Another big mistake. Nikos blocked the cat and swiped him with his massive paw, knocking the lion down. The young one let out a pitiable roar but didn’t get back up. The animal shifted, muscles contracted back into a human. Nikos snarled over Tor’s prostrate body. Kat whistled. Nikos looked in her direction. She waved her hand in a gesture to hurry. Nikos shifted back to human form, once again clothing himself in black leather pants. He looked down at Tor. The young lion rolled his eyes up at him but wisely stayed still. “Next time we meet, I won’t be so forgiving.” Kat shoved Nikos away. “Come on, we’ve got to get out of here.” Tor rolled up into a sitting position. He spoke through a busted lip. “You won’t escape, Kat. Ra knows what you did.” * * * * * Kat knew for a fact that surveillance cameras operated 24/7, monitoring the outside and inside of the casino. Ra might have an all‐seeing eye, but he still relied on technology and others to deal with security. Any second now, the cavalry would be out to round them up. Nikos paused and swiped his hands over his bare chest. The wounds made by Tor’s whip were fading. Each time he transformed, his wounds healed that much faster. All that remained of the bloody marks were lines that appeared as scratches. Soon even they would disappear. “We have to hurry.” What was he doing? Kat glanced around, her nerves on edge. She turned back to him and saw that he’d invoked a spell for a T‐shirt.
30
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt “We don’t have time for your vanity. Not as if it would be unusual to see a half‐naked man in Vegas. People will think you lost your shirt gambling or something.” “Just admit it. You like seeing me naked.” He brushed his hand over the back of her neck. She shrugged him off. “Coast is clear. Move it.” They ran around the building to the front. The Strip in full swing was crowded with people and cars. The two easily blended into the throng. * * * * * “No ma’am, I’m sorry there are no more seats. If you would like to wait I could schedule you for a flight out tomorrow.” Kat cursed Ra’s obsession with desert destinations. He had chosen Vegas for the nightlife and the fact that what happens here, stays here. Yeah, well, it seemed they were going to be staying here, too, if she didn’t find them a flight to Cairo. She walked away from the ticket counter. “Anything?” Nikos asked. He sidestepped a man resting on his luggage. Las Vegas International Airport bustled around them. “I got nothing.” Annoyed and anxious, she watched the terminal. Any minute Ra’s entourage could come walking through, and then she’d be carted back to the obelisk to face judgment by the pride or worse be weighed against Ma’at, the feather of justice. Not something she wanted. “Guess that means you should release me.” Nikos smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “You and I both know damn well I can’t undo the binding until the deal has been fulfilled.” He smiled at her; this time the smile did reach his eyes, and it made her very uncomfortable. “Let’s talk perks since we’re going to be
31
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt getting real close.” “Let’s not, dog breath.” Kat prowled the perimeter of the crowd. Her eyes scanned the crowd. She wove a spell in the air. Hundreds of voices entered her mind. She filtered through the noise, a skill acquired during her apprenticeship with her mistress and goddess, Bast. Eventually she found what she sought. She assessed the couple, her eyes following their every movement. Kat moved with them, ever aware of her quarry. The woman pushed the envelope into her purse. She waited. The woman said something to the man then headed for the ladies’ restroom. Kat followed. The woman went into a stall. Kat waited outside, pretending to fuss with her hair. Florescent lighting made her tan skin sallow and her short jet‐black hair appear blue‐green. A slight pain jabbed at her skull. She ignored it. The binding spell had been a decisive move. Only it had repercussions. The longer she kept it in place, the greater the hold became until the minds of the person bound and the spell weaver melded into one. She wished she could let Nikos go, cut short her foolish mission and head for the hills. But the terms of the binding held fast. She had no other choice. She had to finish what sheʹd started. Except, Ra would send warriors after her to bring her back. His justice would be swift. Merciless. Both she and Nikos would die. Her head continued to throb. Would the woman ever finish with her business and get out of the damn stall? Kat stared at her wan reflection and wondered what Nikos possibly saw in her. Why did she feel tied to him even without the binding spell? None of it made sense and only made her head hurt worse. Kat rubbed her temples and forced herself to focus. If she returned the Heart of Bast, lost for centuries, to her beloved pride, Ra and the others could not brand her a traitor. Of course, if she hadn’t failed so long ago in protecting Ra’s daughter, Bast, she wouldnʹt be in
32
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt this predicament. Kat squeezed her eyes shut. After Bast’s destruction, Kat had tried to recall the events of that fateful night in the temple, but it remained a blur, and the pain that accompanied her attempts forced her to stop. Even today, all she remembered was waking up bathed in blood in Nikos’ arms. She’d always believed her memories had been damaged through her injuries and were irretrievable. Now she wasn’t so sure. Somehow Nikos’ presence had changed everything. Did this mean her memories would come back? More doors opening? She shuddered to think what would be unleashed. A toilet flushed, pulling her out of her reverie. The woman exited and placed her purse on the counter to wash her hands. Kat caught the woman’s eyes in the reflection. Without hesitation she delved into the woman’s short‐term memory and placed a false record. Kat grabbed the tickets from the lady’s purse, leaving her behind mesmerized. Outside the bathroom Nikos joined her. He grabbed her by the elbow and walked with her. “Don’t go so far again.” He growled in her ear. “I have what we need.” She held up the envelope. “Two tickets to New York with a connection to Cairo.” Nikos pulled her up short. Muscles in his arm rippled. She sniffed the air. The cat in her rose up in defense. Tor had come for her. She could sense his aura. Worse, he had brought backup. A shifter more powerful than he. Sekhmet! Kat grabbed Nikos by the hand. His fingers effortlessly laced through his, and she immediately realized her mistake. Heat licked its way up her arm, a delicious burn that made her breath hitch in her throat. Images, shadows, danced around the edges of her mind. If only she could focus… Kat.
33
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Nikosʹ voice in her head shattered her concentration. She blinked, aware once more of the danger they faced. She already sensed Tor and his mother moving closer. With her superior sight, she easily picked out Tor amongst the passengers crowding the terminal. The death glare he shot her told her she would receive no mercy. She had to get the Heart and throw herself at Ra’s feet. Another scent intruded. Dark. Malevolent. Her cat hairs stood up, and every cell in her body told her to run. She knew she could take Tor on, but Sekhmet would be difficult, if not impossible, to defeat. Kat whipped her head around, grateful to be in a human airport with security and their guns all around. Nikos leaned near. “Calm down. We can’t afford to draw attention to us.” “I saw Tor. He isn’t in an unforgiving mood.” “Neither am I,” Nikos gritted out. Kat opened her mind to him, not wanting human or cat ears to hear their words. We don’t need a cat‐and‐dog fight in the airport. It was the very last thing they needed. Their kind survived because humans remained ignorant of them. A fight in a public area would spell disaster. Where to? Gate 17. Nikos nodded his head. Kat began moving in the right direction only to jerk back. Nikos hadn’t budged from his spot. She tugged his hand. He shook his head slightly and instead pulled her in the opposite direction, leading them into the thick of the crowd. “What are you doing? The plane is the other way.” He didn’t reply, merely bent down slightly, picking up a small carry‐on bag off a pushcart as he walked by. “Don’t want to look conspicuous.” The two headed down the terminal for the gates. Kat looked back and observed Tor searching the crowd, their scent fresh and thick.
34
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt She ducked and prayed they would get away. A security checkpoint lay ahead. “Damn. We’ve got no passports.” Nikos unzipped the bag and pulled out two booklets. “You’re not the only one with a knack for finding out secrets.” He passed one book to Kat. She opened it and noticed the woman looked nothing like her. “This isn’t going to fool anybody.” “Use your imagination, Kat.” He tapped a finger against the side of his head. “I can be very imaginative,” she grumbled. His hand slipped around her waist, half lifting her off the floor. “I’m sure you can.” He let his eyes slide over her, his sexual interest obvious. Then leaning close, he breathed in her ear. “I can be very creative when I have to be, too.” Heat shot straight down into her pelvis. The man was too damn lethal. “Keep your mind on what’s important.” And she’d better do the same. She needed to distract security so they could pass through without trouble. She’d use some of her feline femininity on the TSA officer. “I have the purr‐fect idea.” Nikos arched an eyebrow but let her move out of his clasp. She presented both of their passports to the guard. As soon as he looked at her, Kat captured his gaze. She went in hard and fast, not giving the security officer a chance to think. He blinked and handed back the passport booklets. “Have a good trip.” “Hey!” “No cutting in line!” Disgruntled passengers shouted from behind. Kat whipped her head around. Sekhmet and Tor pushed their way through the crowd. The security guard pulled out his radio and asked for backup. “Come on, darlin’,” Nikos pulled Kat down the corridor toward
35
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt the metal detectors. “We’re going to miss our plane.” Kat rushed along with Nikos. Her heart raced. Guards rushed passed them. Behind her she heard the commotion. They reached the checkpoint. Nikos threw the luggage on the table and went through. Kat followed. A body went sailing through the air. Shouts came from all around. Passengers dropped to the ground as security guards went for their weapons. Kat risked a quick look back. Sekhmet held a man up over her head. Her cat eyes glowed red with fire. Kat’s eyes met them briefly, and time seemed to grind to a halt. In their depths she saw retribution. Judgment. Kat glimpsed death. Hers.

Chapter Six “How far do we have to travel?” “Not far. Trust me.” Kat snorted. “Fat chance. You’re a dog.” She turned her back on him, giving him a clear view of her shapely backside. He took a brief moment to enjoy the sight. The heat of the sun beat down on them as they looked for transportation to their destination. The bag that he’d confiscated held no money. They had to be clever in getting around. They shouldered their way through the sea of tourists and locals. The Khan el Khalili Bazaar was packed with merchants selling their wares. The savory smell of cooked meat made his stomach grumble, reminding him that the last meal they had eaten was on the plane several hours ago. “Are we there yet?” Kat whined next to him. She eyed a stall that sold lamb kebobs. Her tongue darted out to wet her lips. Fascinated, his gaze remained on her lovely pink mouth. Like a man parched from lack of water, he found himself wanting to sip and savor. To taste her. His body hardened. His blood thickened. Heat flooded his system, making it difficult to breathe or think. He even found himself leaning toward her.
37
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Nikos closed his eyes and willed himself under control. Damn, he still had it bad for this woman. Centuries passed; even empires rose and fell. He’d lived through famine and feast, wars and prosperity. His lovers came and went, yet none had left her mark like Kat. A mark he was banking on that she carried inside, too. Except, sheʹd shown little sign so far of remembering what theyʹd once shared. Nikos shuttled them down another alley. The narrow passageway blocked out the sun; the heat beat at them in waves. He sniffed the air. He caught the scent. “This way.” He rounded the corner. His gut tightened. The strings of the binding spell coiled around him. He slowed down. Kat lazily paired up next to him. “Keep up,” he barked. “It’s hot. I’m tired, and I’m hungry. I need a nap.” “You can rest when we get to the potter.” Kat stopped dead in her tracks. “Oh no.” She shook her head. “You said you would take me to the Heart of Bast; you never mentioned anyone else.” “I will take you. First, though, I need to find out where it is.” The look on her face was priceless. “W…What?” She stammered. “I assumed since you were the one entrusted with secrets…” “That I knew where the heart was buried?” Nikos picked up. “Sorry, I must have forgotten to mention that bit. But you know what they say about assuming.” He turned his back on her as her claws slid out. “I wouldn’t do anything foolish; we’re still bound.” Kat let out a roar of frustration. “Come. We have an old goat to see about some pots.” * * * * * An old man, frail and stooped in stature, opened the door. He had a kindly face, narrow with a small straggly white beard growing
38
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt out of his chin. Deep‐set lines ravaged by the sands of time told Kat he was an ancient one. Nikos bowed low. Kat followed suit afraid to offend. “I have been awaiting you.” The old man spoke in a gravelly voice. They entered the small, cozy shop. Everywhere, clay pots graced handmade shelves. Large woven baskets on the floor held small trinkets priced for an Egyptian pound. A large potter wheel stood in the middle of the room with a lump of wet clay. The old man led them to a corner rug piled with pillows and a hooka. Nikos and Kat sat down silently while their host placed herbal fruits and tobacco in the pipe. He offered Nikos the pipe to smoke. Nikos accepted his host’s generosity. “Master of the ancient world,” Nikos began respectfully, “how have the years been?” “No need for niceties, my son. I am Khnum, creator of the universe.” As he spoke, ram horns extended from his scalp. His long beard grew to the floor. His pupils dilated into black rectangles. “I know what you seek.” His body no longer stooped but strong, he got up and sat at the potter’s wheel. His cloven foot pumped the pedal while his hands molded the clay. Right before her eyes, he made a small replica of Bast. “She is the Heart of the Nile.” With deft fingers, he poked a hole in her chest, eyes, and womb. “The heart of her people, she wept tears that overran the banks and, like the fertile Nile, she bore fruit.” He pumped the wheel faster and pressed his hand down, flattening the clay. “Upon her demise, I was asked to make three jars.” His hands reshaped the clay into three jars with three different heads for stoppers. “In each, I placed her heart, her eyes and her blood.” Kat jumped up enraged. “Her remains belong to her pride! How could you bury her improperly? Why? Everyone knows Ra had
39
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt proclaimed the Anubians enemies because of the Massacre at Bastubus Temple. Anubis knew without proper burial, without her heart—her soul—being judged against the feather of Ma’at, my mistress would be unable to cross over to the heavenly underworld, to Aaru. The Anubians had doomed her to…to…” Kat couldn’t finish the sentence. Her stomach roiled in distress. Her mistress Bast should have been greeted and cleansed at the gates of the underworld. She should have continued onward to Aaru. What hell had the goddess been condemned to? She stalked toward Khnum. “You side with the enemy, Anubis.” Khnum stopped spinning the wheel. “I am a neutral deity.” “Then why not return her organs, so she can pass on to the afterlife?” His goat eyes fell on them both. He nodded his head and sighed. “I was not allowed.” “By whose orders?” Kat demanded. “Ra.” The single name hit her harder than any blow. “No. You lie! Everyone knows it was the dogs that stole away with her essence.” Nikos stopped smoking and pushed up. He placed a heavy hand on her shoulder to hold her back. Kat’s claws unsheathed. “Let me go so I can cut out his slandering tongue.” She knew she treaded on dangerous territory calling an ancient one a liar, but he had dishonored her lord, Ra. With each breath she wanted to rip open the goat’s throat and rid the lies from his mouth. Why would Bast’s own father not want her to find peace? It was impossible to believe. “Ra loved his daughter. Are you suggesting he killed her?” “No. I do not know who killed Bast. Ra did indeed love his daughter. It might have clouded his decision, but that is not for me to judge. Ra simply did not want her under the influence of another.” “There is no one powerful enough who could influence the mighty Bast.”
40
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt “Yes. There is one.” The goat looked to Nikos. The Keeper of Secrets kept silent. Kat filled in the blank. “Anubis.” “What do you know about this?” Kat’s entire frame vibrated with suppressed rage. Nikos couldn’t take his eyes off her. She’d always been magnificent in her anger. How many times had they argued only to end up in a passionate embrace that had led him to making love with her over and over. Damn. He only had to look at her to get hard. “Answer me,” Kat commanded. “Anubis is your master. Why would he have any special influence over Bast?” For a minute, Nikos thought he’d misheard her. “What I know, you know.” Did she think to test him? “What the hell kind of answer is that? What I know is that you Anubians destroyed my mistress. By not giving her a proper burial, Bast never arrived in Duat where Anubis would have prepared her for her journey to the heavenly underworld. Why didn’t Ra want Anubis near Bast? Tell me, damn you, before I slice you to bits.” She stood toe‐to‐toe with him, her claws unsheathed. She might be a lioness, descendant of the cat people and the goddess Bast, but he was Nikos, Keeper of Secrets, and of Molossian blood, the last in a line of magnificent beasts chosen to stand at Anubis’ side. He would not be cowed by her. A growl began low in his throat and built upwards. “You go too far, Kat. You wish to know Ra’s motives, ask him. Otherwise seek the answers in yourself. You hold the same information that I do.” “Liar,ʺ she cried. Her claws came up. Equally, swift, Nikos blocked her arm, his hands shifting to paws. “Don’t ever do that again.” His eyes bored into hers, daring her to continue this fight. He would win. He had no doubt. She might score some hits, but she would not take him down.
41
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Fury flared across her features. “You tricked me. You knew I would rescue you to pay off the debt I owed. You then manipulated me into this quest for Bast’s heart.” Nikosʹ paws shifted back to hands. He held her tight, not allowing her room to attack him. Her body felt tense and rigid against him. He couldn’t understand the source of her anger. Across the room, their goat host observed the byplay with glittering eyes. “Listen to yourself,” Nikos urged. “You make no sense. Why would I trick you to find the Heart of Bast? If I wanted to destroy the Heart of Bast, I certainly wouldn’t need your assistance.” Brown eyes blazed up at him. She struggled in his grip to no avail. “Obviously, I have information you need.” For the first time, she said something true. He did need information from her. That one minute of inattention, though, cost him. She leaped back, putting space between them. He noticed she still kept her claws unsheathed. “You are Keeper of Secrets. You think to get me to reveal mine. To pass on whatever piece of information you need.” She prowled the edges of the room, snarled at him. “Forget it. I will not help you and Anubis destroy Bast and my people as you did before.” “Are you mad, woman?” Nikos stalked over to her, uncaring that she looked poised to rip him to shreds. “Anubis would never have destroyed Bast.” “Of course, he would. He killed her.” She believed the fabrication of lies. He could read it in her face, hear it in her voice. How could it be? After the temple’s destruction, he’d found her lying in the wreckage. When she finally came to, he hadn’t been allowed to see her as questions and investigations took place. Some members of the ruling council blamed her and accused her of failing to protect Bast. Others called her a murderer. In shock and grief, Kat had no recollection of that night. Nikos had defended her. All in the hope that eventually she would reveal the person who had killed
42
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Bast. But the alliance between cats and dogs fell apart, and they were separated. He’d never seen her again until she’d stood before him in Ra’s chamber as he was being tortured. His gut clenched. What if after all these years she still didn’t remember anything? It seemed impossible. She was Stealer of Memories after all. But he had to know whether she had her memories or not. His entire mission depended on her—just not for the reason she thought. Giving her no time to think, Nikos thrust his mind into Kat’s. He wanted answers, and he wanted them now.

Chapter Seven Kat fought the intrusion. She built up her psychic shields only to watch in horror as they crumbled before Nikos’ attack. Frantically, she wove another spell that would build up her shield’s strength. Once again, her shields came crashing down. Nikos had power equal to her own. She fought him every step, relentlessly, he continued to probe, to search, to invade. She hated him. No one had ever violated her mind as he had. As fast as he entered, he suddenly withdrew. He appeared pale, disturbed. “What the hell happened to your mind?” “What is it you found, son?” Kat had forgotten the ancient one. The goat still sat at the potter’s wheel, though his hands rested on his lap. Knowledge glowed from within him. Yet, Kat did not trust him. She trusted nobody. “Her memories have been tampered with,” Nikos said flatly. Kat’s head whipped around. “No! That’s not possible.” She shook her head in denial. Only she, the Stealer of Memories, had such power. Nikos had to be wrong. What did he hope to gain by it? “I’ve been in your mind. Your memories are locked up tighter
44
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt than a Pharaoh’s tomb.” “And I say you deceive me.” “Then why is it you have no memories of this.ʺ He caught her hand up, linking their fingers. She felt a presence in her brain. Memories flowed to her. A man. A woman. His hands on her naked breast. His mouth devouring hers. He lifted her, so that she could sheath him inside. Her head fell back. Kat gasped. Her own face stared back at her. Other memories intruded. Nikos walking toward her in a Roman‐style bath chamber filled with several pools, stripping off his robe until he stood in all his glory. She on her knees before him, taking him into her mouth, laving and milking him of his essence. She could actually feel the heat of passion burning inside her with each memory. Another thrust into her head, and the scene changed. Her legs draped over Nikos’ shoulder, his mouth on her most intimate place. She could feel her nerve endings tighten, her womb clenching, and then she was falling through space and time. She came apart in a series of explosions that rocked her body over and over. “No!” Kat screamed, wrenching away from his grip. “Lies, all of it. You’re trying to manipulate me, and it won’t work.” “I’m trying to manipulate you? Who the hell put on the binding spell? You don’t like manipulation, well, neither do I. So get rid of the binding, why don’t you?” “I can’t. You know it’s in place until the terms of the deal are complete. And it’s not the same thing at all.” “Oh, please.” Nikos threw his hands up in disgust and howled. “Children, children,ʺ the goat interrupted. He got up from the pottery wheel and moved to the center of the room. “Whether you are bound or not, makes no difference.” “So you say,” Nikos grumbled. “Shut up,” Kat hissed, “and let him talk.” She turned to the
45
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt elder and asked respectfully, “Why does it make no difference, ancient one?” “Because it is both your destinies to find the Heart of Bast and keep it safe. You were once her protectors. Only her priests can resurrect her. She must live again.” His gravelly voice rose in a wail, sending goose bumps down Kat’s flesh. But she couldn’t take her eyes off him. “And if we fail?” she choked out. “Then the lineages of cats and dogs are doomed to annihilation.” * * * * * The taxicab took them to the heart of Matariya, a suburb northwest of Cairo. The heat and dust shimmered against the shining blue sky. Kat spied a luxurious hotel on one corner and an elegant sports club only a block farther down. Apartment buildings hugged each other for space. None of it seemed familiar. Nothing remained of the land she once knew. The land she once called home. Beside her, Nikos stared out the opposite window. They hadn’t talked much once Khnum gave them the location of the Heart. She deliberately clasped her hands in her lap, afraid her emotions might trigger her claws and cause her to tear strips in the seat. Definitely not the way to keep a low profile. She could smell him. Nikos. Dog. Enemy. Lover. She could feel her cat reacting. An instinct to mate taking hold. The memories he’d flooded her with replayed in her mind. How could she have forgotten feelings so powerful? She wanted to deny it all. As Stealer of Memories, she wanted to believe herself too strong to be subject to mind control. Yet her cat recognized Nikos in the most primitive way.
46
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt She couldn’t deny that fact. From the moment she sensed Nikos’ presence inside Ra’s pyramid, her cat sought to connect with him as if she’d done so before. Which would mean Nikos was telling the truth that her memories had been tampered with. Kat delved into herself and found nothing but a black expanse; only the feeling of pain and sadness echoed inside her. Her hands squeezed each other tightly until her knuckles turned white. Nobody had the power to tamper with her mind. Nobody. So what did it all mean? Though she had no memory of the night Bast was murdered, she recalled bits and pieces of the months and days leading up to that moment. And not one of those memories contained Nikos. It had to be a dog trick. It was the only explanation. Her eyes slid sideways, observing her nemesis. Deep below, her cat yowled. As if he’d heard, Nikos slowly brought his head around until his eyes, as blue as the Red Sea, shone down upon her. Neither spoke. Heat arced between them. Kat wanted to break away. To deny the attraction that existed despite attempts to quash it. You keep looking at me like that and we’ll create memories I guarantee you won’t forget. Kat sucked in a breath. His eyes had darkened as he communicated with her. Her body reacted to his words. She dug her nails into her skin, welcoming the pain that kept her grounded. Don’t flatter yourself. You try anything and you’ll find out what it’s like to be neutered. I don’t scare easily, Kat‐nip. Remember that. The taxi pulled into a narrow street to stop halfway down. Nikos paid with money the ancient one had given them. The taxi drove off, spewing smoke in its wake. Kat waved it away and stared at the building before her. Hard to believe Ra’s Sun

Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Temple existed deep below this neighborhood. A place of worship for all Egyptians thousands of years ago, it had long disappeared, hidden away from all except a few chosen ones. To protect the holy site from intruders, the temple would be loaded with deadly traps for the unwary. She rubbed her eyes and stretched her muscles. With the sun high above in the sky, she knew she wasn’t at her strongest. What she really wanted to do was find a quiet place to sleep. Not being completely alert could get her killed. “Any chance we can scout out the place and come back later?” “What’s your radar say?” Nikos clasped her arm above the elbow and led her toward a small shop. Kat grimaced. “That we’ve got trouble on our tails.” Though still some distance away, Kat could pick up the vibrations of power indicating Tor and Sekhmet had arrived in Egypt. “Yeah. My nose says the same. So, let’s go.” They halted outside the tiny bookshop. The grimy window made it impossible to see inside the dark interior. “You’re going to have to work your magic so we can get down to the basement.” Kat pulled her arm from Nikos’ grasp. “I know what to do.” She shoved past him and into the shop. Her eyes welcomed the darkness of the interior. Books loaded shelves and floor space. She walked carefully around a pile of atlases and made her way to the counter. A man emerged from behind a curtain. Kat smiled. The man relaxed and smiled back. Immediately, she seized control of his mind, ruthlessly extracting memory of their visit. She waved Nikos past her. As soon as she’d accomplished her goal, she withdrew from the shopkeeperʹs mind and followed Nikos. A door in the back led down into a basement packed with dirt walls and a dirt floor. Her superior night vision swept the area for traps or signs of an enemy. Nikos stood in the center of the room, his eyes closed, sniffing for the same thing. “I get nothing,” she said. “What about you?”
48
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt “We go ahead as planned.” Kat watched him approach the mud‐packed wall facing east. He lifted his hands palms outward and began moving them in a pattern. As his hands flowed, hieroglyphics glowed in the air. One by one they moved into position against the wall, forming a large circle. Nikos faced the circle with confidence, yet Kat knew one wrong placement and the power unleashed would easily destroy them both. His hands moved again. Faster, sharper motions that made the circle spin left then right. The hieroglyphics came off the wall, mixing and moving. At a sharp command from Nikos, they returned once more one by one to the wall, forming a circle again. Kat held her breath as Nikos spoke the ancient language. With each word, a hieroglyphic character grew brighter, outshining its companions, and the circle would spin. Like a combination of the lock, she thought. They were close. Only one or two more to go and they would access Ra’s Sun Temple. As long as Nikos didn’t make a mistake. The last hieroglyphic clicked into place. A light beam shot out, bounced off the ceiling, the north wall, the south and the west, before landing on a spot on the floor. The earth parted, revealing a stone slab. A grating sound filled the dank basement, and Kat watched as the slab slid back. A dark cavity loomed beneath. And all at once the light beam went out, plunging them back into darkness to face the unknown.

Chapter Eight Nikos started down the carved sandstone staircase that descended deep into the earth. Once his head disappeared beneath the opening, Kat quickly followed. She’d taken several steps when she heard the stone slab slide close. Darkness enveloped them, all but for a few holes of light that filtered in from the surface above. So much time had passed that an entire city lay beneath the modern one above, forgotten and neglected. “You do know your way, don’t you?” Not that she was scared. Her vision changed, allowing her cat optics to take over. She could see enough of the room to make out shapes, still she wished for more natural light. Once the sun went down in the world above, they would be pitched into complete blackness. She didn’t want to end up buried alive in the place. Unease gripped her as she put one foot in front of the other. This was Ra’s temple. Surely, she should have some memories of the place. Feel some connection. She let her mind travel back. Memories rushed past. Finally, she saw herself kneeling before Ra. Voices rose up in chants all around her in prayer. With effort, Kat held on to the image. This memory was quite old. She fast forwarded, closer to the time of the destruction of Bast’s temple and, as she did so, she became increasingly aware of blank spots. Doors locked firmly into place,
50
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt secrets and memories hidden out of her reach. She slowed down and tried to focus on her memories. Nikos walked cautiously up ahead, the gap between them widening. The pain in her head increased, making her sick to her stomach. Her hand reached out to touch the wall for support. “Don’t,” Nikos barked. “Assume everything is a trap. Touch nothing and use all your senses if you want to stay alive.” Chastened, Kat simply nodded. She wouldn’t make the same mistake again. She would think about her memories—or lack of them—later. “We’ll cover more ground and cut the search time in half if we shift.” He muttered a few words under his breath, and his clothes disappeared, leaving his powerful frame. He was right. Time was running out in more ways than one. With each passing hour, the binding spell grew tighter. If they didn’t hurry up, the spell would be permanent, a prospect she didn’t find quite so unappealing at the moment when faced with Nikosʹ strong back, shoulders and tight buttocks. She, too, made short work of her clothing, whispering the spell that would leave her nude. Kat had never been coy about disrobing, but the way Nikos’ eyes roamed over her body made her flush with heat. Annoyed by her body’s response, she ignored it and prepared to shift. A rasping sound caught her attention a second before a sand snake sprang at her. Venomous fangs sunk deep into her calf muscle. Kat screamed. The snake pulled back ready to strike again. Nikos grabbed the reptile by the tail and swung it against the stone wall, killing it. Kat sank to the sandy floor and examined her wound. Nikosʹ voice filled the air. Hieroglyphics glowed then faded. When he finished, he came to her side. “Mehen, the serpent spirit, sent one of her guards to protect Ra’s temple. I’ve invoked a barrier spell. It’ll give us some breathing room and protect us from further attack for a moment.” Nikos knelt down to examine Kat’s leg. He swore viciously
51
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt even as his touch remained gentle while probing the wound. “You’re in pain,” he murmured. He cradled her limb between his hands. He closed his eyes and leaned slightly forward, his lips parted, and he began a chant. She recognized the spell of Ani, an ancient healing blessing. ʺThe blood of Isis, the spells of Isis, the magical words of Isis shall keep this shining one strong and shall protect her from whosoever would harm her.” The throbbing lessened. She sensed the poison’s progress in her bloodstream slowing down. Kat stared at him in awe. “You have the power of a healer.ʺ “Nothing of significance,” he dismissed. Nikos held his silence, while his hands and fingers caressed her calf. The feeling of well‐being she’d experienced gradually disappeared and, in its place, a tension began to hum along her nerve endings. The man was too close. Her eyes locked on his lips. She breathed him in. His hand slipped around to the back of her knee. He leaned over and placed his lips over the snakebite. She felt his tongue slide over her skin. At the touch of his lips, fire raced through her system. Her cat stretched and purred. A whimper rose in her throat. He was healing her wound. The last thing she should be thinking about was sex. What she needed to focus on was getting out of this deadly mess. He sucked, drawing her flesh inside his mouth. Her poisoned blood seeped into his mouth. He spit it out. “You must shift,” Nikos said, as he swiped away the blood. “The transformation will slow the effects, but it won’t cure you.” “I know.” Kat rolled onto her side. “We should go back to Khnum. He’ll know how to cure the bite.” “No,” Kat disagreed. “There’s not enough time. We have to get the Heart to fulfill the terms of the binding spell. Otherwise, if I die, youʹll die, too.”
52
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt “That still might happen if we don’t find the Heart in time.” Nikos smoothed his hand over her thigh and hip. “Damn it, this is my fault. I failed to protect you once again.” He spoke in a far off voice. He pulled his hand back and stood, putting distance between them. She shook her head, trying to clear it, unaccustomed to the emotions bombarding her. “It’s not your fault I was unable to protect Bast. She was my responsibility not yours.” His eyes burned into hers. “Not true. And if you had your memories you would know why. I should have been there by Bast’s side. But custom would not allow me in the room while she…” He cut off his words. “I said too much. We should get moving. We’re on limited time.” “Hey, what custom?” Kat pounced up. She put pressure on her bad leg and yelped. Nikos was immediately by her side, holding her up. Nikos frowned down upon her. “Change.” The pain in her leg continued. She ignored it. “Not until you tell me what you meant. What do you know about that night in Bast’s temple when everyone else got slaughtered?” Nikos stood silent for a moment, his featured cast in shadow. “I was with Anubis.” “A convenient alibi,” she spat out. “You were out with the leader of the underworld while my mistress and all her cats were shredded to bits. It has never been proven, but the pride has always believed Anubis was behind the destruction.” She tried to brush past him, but he grasped her upper arm, preventing movement. “Watch what you say.” A growl sounded in his chest in warning. “My master loved Bast.” Nikosʹ gaze bore down into hers, daring her to defy his word. She couldn’t look away. How could he say Anubis loved Bast with such conviction? “It isn’t true,” she whispered, shaking her head in denial. “You don’t want to admit it’s true. It’s easier to blame Anubis
53
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt than face the truth. Somewhere hidden inside you lies the truth.” “Stop it, would you? Just stop.” She raised her hand to her temple. Pressure squeezed at her brain. Fiery symbols seared into her mind. Powerful. Explosive. They tumbled and turned, spinning like the combination of the lock Nikos had opened to allow them entry to this underground world. One symbol stood out, flames surrounding it. Sistrum, the ritual instrument she had used many times in ceremonies long ago. Engulfed by flames, it materialized before a door in her mind. The Sistrum rattled with the sound of a tambourine. A door long locked opened inviting her in. Kat stepped inside. * * * * * Down a long dark corridor she traveled, drawn toward a shining light at the end. The corridor suddenly ended, and she stood on desert sand. She shaded her eyes with her hand from the blinding sun, but even the sparkling sand reflected the sun’s rays. Under a palm tree, Kat’s mistress, Bast, sat alone, dipping her foot into the cool waters of the oasis. Movement at the edge of the oasis caught her eye. Anubis! He appeared out of the heat waves like a mirage. Nikos followed a respectful distance behind. Bast rose up and greeted Anubis with a kiss. He, in turn, presented her with a delicate white lotus flower. Bast smiled, pleasure visible in her gaze. Neither seemed aware of the watchful eyes of their priests. All they saw was one another. The love between the two radiated strongly. Even the oasis seemed to rejoice in their presence. The emotions were so palpable, Kat reached out a hand as if to touch the embracing couple. Immediately, the scene disintegrated before her eyes. Flames
54
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt sprang up consuming the oasis. Kat screamed, trying to reach her mistress. The fierce blaze rose higher. The smoke made it impossible to see. Fiery symbols once again tumbled around her. She couldn’t focus. Couldn’t breathe. Fire flew, shaping into a bird. Ba. On deft wings the symbol of ascension materialized before her. It swept her up and carried her to another door in her mind. The door banged open. Pain shot into her heart and head. Screams of terror poured out from the open portal. Kat found herself sucked down another corridor until she stood inside Bast’s temple. Young maidens covered in blood came running toward her, wailing their mistress’ name. Kat sped through the passages of the temple, her heart racing. How could she have left Bast defenseless? Though she’d been following Bast’s orders, she alone was responsible for Bast’s protection. Kat put on a burst of speed, determined to get to Bast in time. She shifted on the run, her sensitive nose picking up the scent of fear and blood everywhere. Her claws slipped on the marble floor of the inner sanctum. Kat slid, her legs trying to gain traction on the slick surface. Screams of denial sprang to her lips upon discovering Bast lying in a pool of blood. Bast stared up at Kat weakly from the cold marble floor of her chamber, her fingers reaching out, red bubbles at her lips. Kat had failed her mistress. She had done as Bast ordered and in doing so had traded one life for another. Her nails dipped into the blood and became stained red with Bast’s life essence. Blood coated everything. Smoke filled her nostrils. Oil from the lamps spilled in the commotion and erupted into flames. Fire! The temple burned. Her mistress burned. She burned. She heard Nikos shouting her name. Kat turned and saw him standing outside the flames. He reached for her. Kat!

Chapter Nine Nikos swore as he caught Kat’s sagging body against him. He easily swept her up into his arms. Her body burned with fever. Had the poison managed to get around his spell? He’d tried to buy her time, to slow down the poison’s advance, but he didn’t have the skill or knowledge of a true healer. Kat’s eyes fluttered. “I’m burning up.” “I’m taking you back to Khnum. We’ve got to get the poison out of you.” “No.ʺ Kat struggled in his arms. Reluctantly, he set her on her feet, keeping one arm wrapped around her. “It’s not the poison.” Her eyes wide, she stared up at him helplessly. “I remembered—” “Everything?” he interrupted even as he soothed his hand along her back. “No. But, I saw Bast…and Anubis at an oasis, very much in love,ʺ she choked out. “So you believe me, finally,ʺ he said, watching her reaction carefully. “Maybe.” Nikos snorted. Figured she’d still be stubborn. “Why are you so determined to believe the lies that Anubis was behind Bast’s destruction?”
57
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Her eyes slid away from his, and he had to clamp down on the frustration. “I also saw the destruction of the temple. The blood,ʺ she said. “Then you know Anubis didn’t do it.” Kat shook her head; her silky strands brushed against him, making his body clench. He hadnʹt forgotten for a moment that neither was wearing a stitch. He took a deep breath and forced it out, telling himself to concentrate on what was important. “I didn’t see who did it,” she said, frustration clear in her voice. “I’d left Bast to do something she had requested. When I came back, the temple was under attack. By the time I arrived in Bast’s quarters, she was near death.” “What did Bast request? Why did she send you away from the temple?” Nikos held his breath. This was the information he sought. The information Anubis demanded he retrieve. “I don’t know.” Kat rubbed her head. “What does it matter? I left Bast open to attack. I deserved to die with her.” “No.” Everything in him rejected the notion. A gulf might have separated them for centuries, but at least he’d known she was alive somewhere in the world. “You heard what Khnum said. This is our destiny. You weren’t meant to die that day because you are destined to resurrect Bast. We both are.” Katʹs eyes flew to his face. “You honestly believe the old goat?” “Oh yeah.” Frankly, he hadn’t thought of much else since coming face‐to‐face with Kat again. “We’ve been given a second chance, Kat‐nip, and this time I don’t intend to blow it.” He reeled her into his embrace, giving her no time to think or escape, and lowered his mouth to hers. “Don’t deny me, Kat,” he whispered as his lips hovered above hers. “A little something to remind us what we have to live for.” He kept it light and soft. His tongue tracing the seam of her mouth before she opened to let him in. He tightened his hold and allowed his entire being to pour into this kiss, wanting her to
58
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt remember what they’d had, what they could still have if she chose to reach for it. Her hands clutched at his shoulder. His erection pressed against her stomach. She tore her mouth from his, her breath coming out in pants. He saw the shock in her eyes. “I’d better shift,” she stammered out. Nikos nodded his head. His hungry eyes took one last fill of her firm breasts, her pebbled nipples, curved waist and downy curls between her legs. He could feel himself thickening. The dog’s desire for a mate overtaking him. “Do it now, Kat,” he ordered, aware that if she didn’t change soon, he’d forget about the deathtrap they were in and simply take her. His body shuddered as he forced himself under control. He would have her, he promised himself. That, too, was part of their destiny. Kat felt her skin ripple out, golden fur slid over her body sheathing her in the familiar scent of lion. She arched her back and stretched her tight muscles. Padded paws spread out over the sand, and her claws slid out. Kat felt powerful and strong, but the cat sensed something was wrong. Her back leg was weak in comparison to her other limbs. She shifted her weight, careful not to apply too much pressure. The air smelled dank and musty. She noted the crumbling walls of sandstone. Faded, chipped murals lined both sides. She didn’t have time to examine them closely. Already, Nikos had shifted, taking down the barrier at the same time. He trotted forward. Tentatively, she touched the ground with her swollen paw. The poison had slowed, but it still coursed through her veins. She limped along, trying to keep up with the pace Nikos set. Ahead of her, Nikos moved with the grace of a top athlete, every muscle clearly defined. Her cat purred in appreciation. Nikos halted. He angled his head. His ears perked. He listened. Get back! Nikos growled in her head, just as an entire section of
59
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt flooring caved beneath them. Kat watched in horror as Nikos disappeared in the rubble. She tried to scramble back, but her leg gave out. She tumbled downward. Kat landed hard on a stone floor, the breath knocked out of her. Dust and dirt rose up and settled. She searched for signs of Nikos. He lay a few feet away on his side, and he wasn’t moving. Kat struggled to her feet and limped over to him. Her heart in her throat, she nudged his torso. Wake up, Nikos. Wake up, damn you. She heard the terror in her voice and forced herself to stay calm. She pushed him once more. I’m okay. Just give me a second. Kat stepped back to give him space. Her eyes swept the chamber. A whisper of movement caught her attention. Nikos growled. Move back slowly, and do whatever I tell you. Kat did as he asked, snarling at the unseen threat. She kept her footsteps light and stayed on the balls of her feet. Only her back leg twitched. She pushed the pain aside and prepared for battle. They appeared to have fallen into a lower chamber. Hardly any light permeated this section of the old city. Her senses flared out, trying to get a fix on whatever had tripped Nikosʹ radar. A loud rumbling sound shook the passage. Blinding light filled the lower room. Nikos bumped Kat back shielding her. Power rained down on them. Clouded energy poured into the chamber. Black, then blacker, it mixed with particles of sand and swirled before them. It grew in strength and whirled in frenzy. In the dark mass, eyes glowed with vengeance then disappeared. Whispers filled the chamber, speaking of death and destruction. Kat tuned out the sound, focusing instead on the beast hidden within the darkness. Nikos had placed himself in front of her, his stance protective. He was a dog. The enemy. Yet, he chose to defend her.

Chapter Ten It’s Mehen. Nikos didn’t dare take his gaze off the serpent spirit. Like the legendary Medusa, serpents sprang from her head, while other vipers coiled around her scaly arms. In place of legs, she possessed a long snake’s tail. Her yellow eyes glowed back at them with hatred. Watch out! Kat shrieked into his mind. The air swirled in a dervish. Get behind Mehen. I’ll grab her attention. He didn’t wait to see if Kat followed his orders. Nikos lunged, going for the throat of the spirit. Mehen slithered out of the way. Nikos slammed into the wall instead. He quickly rebounded, shaking off his disorientation. The creature lashed out with her forked tongue. Nikos jumped back. The tongue hit the wall. Gray smoke rose and, when it cleared, he saw the small crater that remained. Shit. Her tongue is full of acid. Mehen’s tongue shot again, forcing Nikos to move back. Huge fangs came down from the roof of her mouth. Poisonous venom dripped down in torrents, flowing onto the floor. Nikos quickly jumped away, snapping and snarling at the snake. The head undulated, as the serpents hissed and spat. The
62
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt malevolent spiritʹs eyes glowed with an inner light. Her mouth opened, and scorpions poured forth. Nikos began digging, his powerful paws creating a deep hole in no time. It would only give them a small edge. He had no weapons against a scorpion’s poison. Let alone hundreds of them. Kat! I need you now! The scorpions tumbled down into the hole. They began looking for the way up and out. Kat soared through the air in an arch. The lioness’ long body stretched, her arms and claws reached out. She slammed into the back of the serpent. Her massive jaws clamped down onto the creature’s neck. It tried to shake her off. She dug all four claws into the reptile’s scales. The snake woman hissed and whipped around, but her efforts were futile. Kat couldn’t be shaken. She rode the snake down to the ground. It writhed under her. Black pools of blood drained into the sand. Air swirled around in the passageway. A fury of sounds, a howling, bombarded his ears. Nikos peered through slitted eyes to prevent the grit from getting in. He watched Kat and Mehen grapple. Inside, his muscles tensed. The sand storm picked up. It whirled and danced. Underfoot the sand flooring slipped, opening up beneath Mehen. Quicksand! Nikos shouted to Kat. Let go! Kat’s released her hold and tried to bound away. The snake’s tail grabbed her hindquarters and wrapped around her ankles. The serpent spirit slipped down into the hole, pulling Kat with her. Kat’s claws dug into the ground, but found no purchase. Hold on! Nikos leaped and transformed in mid‐air. His hands grabbed at Kat’s paws, but they were too big. Half of her body was submerged beneath the sand. “Change!” Kat transformed. Her hands gripped his wrists. His muscles
63
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt strained. The snake held tight. Mehen threatened to pull both of them down into a sandy grave. Release me. “No! I’m never letting you go again.” Kat pulled one of her hands free. “What are you doing? Take my hand!” Nikos roared, straining to keep his grip. Trust me. Her claws slid out of her free hand. She wielded them like knives, slicing and stabbing at the tail. Mehen shrieked. The snake uncoiled its tail. Nikos gave a mighty yank and pulled her free from the quicksand. Then with a huge sucking sound the snake creature disappeared into the earth; the scorpions vanished with her. Silence reined. Nikos hauled Kat against his body and kissed her. She wrapped her arms around his neck and held on. His tongue dove into her mouth, dueling with hers. She couldn’t breathe, and she didn’t care. Adrenaline coursed through her system. She couldn’t get enough of him. She kissed, bit and devoured, welcoming his rough caresses. He pulled away and leaned his forehead to hers. He panted heavily. “Don’t you ever scare me like that again.” She smiled and grimaced at the same time. Every muscle in her body ached. She felt as if she had been put on a rack and the screws tightened until her bones would pop. Warm satisfaction spread throughout her. She’d kicked a three‐thousand‐year‐old spiritʹs butt and lived. So, all right, the spirit might have the last laugh since the snake poison still traveled in Kat’s body. She thought about that moment when Mehen had nearly
64
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt dragged her under. Would’ve dragged her under if not for Nikos. He’d dug in and held on. He couldʹve simply let her go, but he hadn’t. Of course, if Mehen had succeeded in killing her, he would have died, too. She couldn’t keep the thought from sneaking in, and it made her feel somehow unworthy. Why did she question his motives for saving her? Why did she find the attraction between them so disturbing? And why was she so afraid to trust him? To trust what her memories were revealing to her little by little? Because he was a dog. Her people’s enemy, therefore, her enemy. She couldn’t get around that fact and, no matter what happened, she’d be a fool to forget it. Kat moved out of his embrace, seeking to put distance between them. She took one step and collapsed to the floor. Nikos swore as he reached down to help her up. “You okay?” “I’ll be fine,” she said. “Yeah? From where I stand you look like crap.” “I bet you charm all the girls with that line.” Nikos blew out a breath. “Damn it, Kat, I care. The poison is still in your system. We’re running against the clock here.” “I know. So let’s quit with the chit‐chat and get our tails in gear.” “Fine. You able to walk?” Her leg was swollen and red. If possible, it looked even worse than before. To top it off, they were both exhausted and bruised. “I said don’t worry about me.” Kat pulled her hand from his. She whispered a hieroglyphic spell and clothed herself. Nikos followed suit. He could see her legs trembling in the effort to stay upright. Damn woman was too stubborn to know when to quit. As she tried walking a few steps, he felt the invisible strings that bound them together grow tighter. He also sensed her power ebbing. His heart constricted. He moved up beside her. “Lean on me.” “I can manage,ʺ she bit out.
65
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt “For once, Kat, shut up and do what you’re told. The goal here is to get the Heart. At the rate you’re going, we might as well lie down and invite Mehen back to finish the job.” “I don’t like alpha males.” “Get over it.” He slipped his arm around her waist and adjusted his pace to hers. “You don’t want to admit you’ve never found anyone as handsome, intelligent or studly as I am.” Kat choked. “Studly? Are we talking about a species that drinks out of toilet bowls?ʺ “Low blow, Kat‐nip. At least we don’t throw up fur balls.” Laughter spilled from her lips. He relished the sound. Banter had played a large part of their relationship in the past. She’d always given as good as she’d gotten. She’d matched him in every way that counted, as priest, warrior, and lover. To think he’d nearly lost her again and this time for keeps. When she’d almost gone under with Mehen in the quicksand, his heart had stopped. He’d realized with absolute clarity that this was the only woman for him. He could care less for all the reasons they should be apart. None of them mattered a damn. This woman had been made for him. Had been destined for him. Together they would live or die. “How much farther you think?” Kat could feel the poison slowly working its way through her system. She wasn’t even sure she could shift again, and that could spell her doom. While she was a lethal warrior in human form, her cat gave her a powerful edge. “Not too much more if we can trust Khnumʹs directions. Don’t give up on me now, Kat‐nip.” He pulled her closer, taking more of her weight as they advanced through the dark passageways. A part of her wanted to stand on her own, to deny she needed him in any way. But another part, particularly her cat, welcomed his strength. She didn’t like feeling torn in two. Those damn memories. They were messing with her head. She
66
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt didn’t know what to believe anymore. Nikos was the enemy, wasn’t he? Without meaning to a sigh slipped out of her mouth. She really needed to get a grip on herself. “Come on, let’s take a breather. Sit on this rock a minute, and let me check you over.” Nikos guided her gently toward a large chunk of masonry that had fallen from a column and made her sit. Kat gratefully sank down on the hard surface and caught her breath. Nikos squatted down in front of her. Gently, he brushed a strand of hair off her cheek. She read concern in his eyes, and it warmed her even though she knew there was no chance for them. Impulsively, she leaned forward and kissed him on the corner of his mouth before settling back and closing her eyes. “What was that for?” Kat smiled inwardly at the bemusement in his voice. “For a dog, you’re okay in a fight.” “For a cat, you’re not so bad yourself. Now be quiet, while I try to boost your system some more.” He took her hands in his. At the contact, her eyes opened. With one touch, he set her heart racing. Nikos closed his eyes and began murmuring a healing spell in the ancient language. Kat watched him, enjoying the freedom to examine the hard masculine beauty of his face, characterized by strong cheekbones, firm lips and a tiny intriguing scar, nearly faded, at the corner of his eye. He disturbed her on so many levels. She felt a hot tingling sensation spread from her outer limbs inward until her entire body seemed suffused in warmth. She let him work his magic and continued to peruse his body. Lean, muscular, hard. It made her mouth dry, simply looking at him. A warrior unparalleled and that only attracted her more. As she scanned his hard chest, she noted a red stain expanding below his rib cage. “You’re hurt.ʺ She pulled her hands from his and reached over
67
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt to lightly touch the wound. “Why didn’t you say something?” It angered her that he would see to her needs and ignore his own. “It’s nothing. I’ve had worse.” “Typical male. This time you shut up and let me look you over.” Nikos grinned. “Now who’s getting all alpha?” “In your dreams. We cats don’t need to rule the pack to know we’re superior.” She forced him to stand up and followed suit. She pulled his cotton T‐shirt from his pants, exposing a wicked cut several inches long. “Did Mehen get you?” She couldn’t get the fear out of her voice. If Nikos had been poisoned, too… “She didn’t get me, Kat.” His answer reflected her thoughts so accurately she wondered if he’d been in her mind again. The more time together, the tighter the binding between them. “I got it when I hit the wall,” he continued. “It’s a scratch. Nothing more.” Kat ignored him. She grabbed the hem of her shirt and tore off a strip. Folding it into a pad, she lifted his shirt again and gently wiped away the blood. She found herself riveted by the action. A sense of déjà vu hit her. Her focus tunneled; her mind grew clouded. Once more fiery symbols blazed in her head, tumbling, spinning in every direction. She couldn’t escape. And so Kat waited for the next memory to reveal itself.

Chapter Eleven The Tyet materialized. An ancient Egyptian ankh with arms bent, the symbol represented the flow of menstrual blood from the womb of the goddess. The second to last door opened in a gush of blood. Kat’s hands soothed a damp cloth over Bast’s brow, wiping away the sweat. Bast grunted again, her face bunched in agony. The midwife sat between Bast’s legs, urging her to push. Maidens fanned the air to cool down their beloved mistress. A blessed moment of calm and fear, the temple hushed as everyone waited upon the goddess, all anticipating the child’s birth. Bastʹs face contorted as her muscles bunched to push. All held their breath, and then came the tiny wail of a babe. Smiles broke out, and several maidens began to chatter in hushed excitement. “Tell me,” Bast ordered softly. “A boy, my lady,” the midwife announced with satisfaction. A look of peace descended on Bast’s face. The scene warped and melted. Kat tried to hang on, needing to learn what had happened to the child. Bast spoke, and Kat strained to hear even as she felt herself being sucked back across time and brought once more into the present. Kat blinked. “A child,” she gasped out.
69
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt The mere thought of it seemed foreign, strange. Forbidden. But she couldnʹt discount her memories. Yet how could it be? There was no child. The babe would have been taken into the pride, held up in the highest esteem. Revered and worshipped by all of her people. He would have grown up under the guidance of priests. Ra would have kept the boy by his side, aided the child and groomed the cub for his place in the royal line. Could it be a trick? A false memory? Except, no other being possessed such a power as she. Not even Nikos, though he was powerful in his own right. Still there was doubt in her mind. Nikos had been telling the truth when he’d said someone had tampered with her mind. It was the only explanation for the hidden memory. Nikos! She locked eyes with him. “You knew.” She did not accuse. “As Keeper of Secrets, you knew. This is why you were not in the temple that night. Tradition did not allow for a man to be in the birthing room.” “You remember.” Nikos’ arms came up to clasp her elbows, halting her ministrations. Her gaze locked on his warily. “Tell me about the child, Kat.” Indecision battled within her. How much to share? What would he do with the information? “Please tell me.” She searched his face for answers, but he was Nikos, Keeper of Secrets. He would reveal only what he wished her to know. She thought about what the goat has said. They were destined to find the Heart of Bast. They had to work together. The fate of their people depended on them if she were to believe the ancient’s prophecy. “I remembered Bast giving birth,” she admitted. “It must have been conceived with Anubis. The child is a boy.” Her voice grew stronger as she sensed the rightness of sharing this information with Nikos. “I gave him to another to be smuggled out of the city.” “Who?”
70
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt “Se‐Osiris, the greatest magician of Egypt.” “Do you know where he took him?” Kat shook her head. “No. But, none of this makes sense at all. How could such a secret have been kept hidden? How could Ra not know of this?” She rubbed her head, wishing she could distinguish between what was true and untrue. Nikos threw her a cocky look. “I am Nikos, Keeper of Secrets, or have you forgotten? It is my power to be discreet about that which others would wish to know. There are reasons why Bast and Anubis employed us.” Nikos chose his words carefully. “What reasons? My people would have rejoiced in such an event.” “Your people,ʺ Nikos pointed out. “But, what about my people? This child would be son of Anubis, next in line to oversee the underworld and leader of the pack.” Kat bit down on her lip. Given the enmity between their peoples, the child would have become a bone to be fought over. Except, the child was now an adult. Could he possibly reunite their two peoples? She would never have considered the idea even a short time ago. Being with Nikos, though, had changed everything. Maybe they didn’t have to be forever enemies. Inside her soul, a seed of hope sprouted. “What has become of the cub? Or would he be a pup?” “I don’t know. That is why Anubis sent me to find you. It will be difficult to find Se‐Osiris. The pack will track him down.” Nikos took her hands in his and raised them to his lips. He kissed them gently. “Thank you, Kat, for trusting me. Your part of the deal has been fulfilled.” She could feel some of the binds loosing up. The twine of the spell still held, though, since Nikos had yet to give her what she wanted. Nikos tugged her hand. “Come. Let us find the Heart of Bast. We’re almost there. Can’t you hear her heart calling us?” Kat perked her ears. “I don’t hear anything.”
71
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt “No. Listen in the way of an Aait‐Shesheta.” Kat closed her eyes, shoving aside the pain that slowly seemed to be overtaking her body, and concentrated in the way of a priestess. A single beat sounded, then another. Steady. Strong. Joy flooded through her, dulling the pain. “She’s here. I can feel her.” She looked up at Nikos and smiled. He nodded. “Come on. We have no time to waste.” Kat focused on the heartbeat. Doing so helped her forget the pain and the continuing spread of the poison. She didn’t expect to make it out alive. But she didn’t want Nikos to die. And now that they knew about the child, it was imperative that one of them made it out alive to find him. “You will find him, won’t you?” she asked suddenly. “Count on it.” Nikos spoke with conviction. “I won’t give up.” Kat nodded, slightly soothed by his answer. “It must be handled with care. The situation is delicate.” Nikos pulled up, shooting her a look of exasperated amusement. “I’m very much aware of what’s at stake here, Kat‐nip. Anubis thought the babe was destroyed in the temple flames. He learned recently that the child survived and has been searching ever since. He has no wish to set off further war between our two peoples. He seeks reconciliation as do I.ʺ His hand came up to tenderly caress her cheek. “Believe me, Kat.” She was beginning to, Kat realized. Somewhere along this journey, she’d come to trust him, to recognize that being a dog didn’t automatically make him her enemy. And for the first time, she had something more than her loyalty to Ra to live for. Her heart wept in response, though, because she had no future. She had given Nikos what he wanted; in a few moments she would see if he would keep his end of the bargain. Once the Heart was
72
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt in her hands, the terms of the binding spell would be fulfilled. He would be free. The poison, though, continued to work its evil, attacking her insides. She would die here. But at least she wouldn’t take Nikos with her. That’s all that mattered. * * * * * The stone sarcophagus dominated the small chamber. Two life‐size cat statues made from pure gold rested at its head and foot. Kat and Nikos stood as one on the threshold of the small room. Kat hardly dared to breathe, unable to believe they’d found the Heart. The tomb lay silent. Only the air stirred. “Can you smell the fresh air?” Kat asked. “Yes. We must be close to the surface.” He put out his hand, reaching into the other room careful not to trigger any traps. Nothing happened. Just a faint line of sunshine crossed his palm. “Scan with all your senses,” Nikos commanded softly. Kat let her lioness rise. With her feline vision, she examined the room. The walls were bare of decoration. She found it odd not to find a dedication to Bast’s greatness. She looked up and saw the ceiling had been carved with a celestial star map. Below mosaic tiles had been placed on the floor depicting Egyptian symbols. She could feel Nikos seeking and searching. His power thrummed against her. She slid her hand into his. Power arced between them. Locks inside her head tumbled; darkness yawned giving into the light. Tiny flames popped and sparkled. Flames rolled into a small scarab beetle. Colorful wings spread and burst open. Khephera, the scarab, the symbol of resurrection. The final door in her mind cracked open.

Chapter Twelve Light shot out of the door, blinding her. All around her she felt the power. Light and airy, she floated through the door and down the corridor. Kat saw herself kneeling in a pool of blood on the temple floor, cradling Bast in her arms. Her beloved mistress lay dying, the last of her life essence leaking out of her body. She spoke softly to Kat through quivering lips. “You’ve done well. Do not despair. My time will come again. Fulfill your destiny.” Bast coughed, and a spittle of blood appeared at her lips. “Protect the secret of my son. I am depending on you.” A gurgle sounded in her throat. The light in Bast’s gaze extinguished. Her mistress’ spirit had left to begin her journey to the other world. Kat forced back the tears. She knew what she had to do. She looked at the golden amulet around Bast’s neck. Kat stared at her own reflection. With searing pain, she tore into her own memories and stole them. With another blinding flash of light, Kat returned to the present and the small room containing the sarcophagus that held the Heart of Bast. Shaken to the core, she carelessly took a step forward. Golden eyes glowed from the cat statues. “Guardians.” Nikos pulled her back. “There has to be another
74
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt way. A trick to get past them.” His eyes searched the room, coming to a stop upon the threshold beneath them. “There’s an inscription here.” Nikos used his foot to wipe away the thousand‐year‐old dust covering the hieroglyphics. Both got down on their hands and knees to read the hymn. Nikos leaned close and read aloud. The Lamp of Wisdom burns steadily, If the oil that feeds the flame be Love. The beloved will meet the goddess, If the flame that touch the ground be Trust. Kat finished off the rest. The flame will be as bright as a Star, Only then shall the goddess be set free. “It’s a riddle.” Nikos grimaced. “A star.” Kat shifted her sight to that of her cat and looked up. Some of the stars winked. She followed the light down to where it rested on the floor. Among the mosaics only a few of the symbols were directly under the light. Excited, she looked at Nikos. “Each symbol corresponds to a star.” She pointed to the tiles on the floor. “We have to step on the precise spot.” “Ingenious. But in what order?” Kat scrutinized the mosaics. She glanced back at the hymn on the floor reading it over. “The flame.” It all made sense. Somehow Bast had ensured she would rise again by giving Kat the keys to unlock her memories. The symbols! Kat closed her eyes, letting her memories flow through her. Burning symbols tumbled in her mind. Each one clicked into place. “Sema, Sistrum, Ba, Tyet, and Khephera.” “I see them.” He stepped on the first tile. The eyes of the statues glowed brighter. Nikos jumped back. “No. We have to follow the inscription. Notice the words Love and Trust. We have to do this together. That’s what Khnum meant by
75
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt the two of us being needed to get the Heart.” “Can you make it with that leg?” His eyes assessed her as he waited for her answer. “I can do it.ʺ For her mistress, Kat could bear anything. She would not fail this time. “Watch where you step,” Nikos cautioned Kat opened her mind to Nikos. She linked her hands with his. Trust. That one word echoed through both their minds. In unison they moved—stepping on Sema, the symbol of fidelity and unity. It lit up beneath their feet. Kat smiled up at Nikos. He deftly glided her to the second symbol, moving like two dancers. The euphoric rattle of the Sistrum rang in the room as their feet touched the symbol. Light as a bird, they floated over Ba and moved over the Tyet. They spun onto the last tile shaped into a colorful mosaic of the beetle, Khephera. At last, they reached the bottom of the tomb. Kat let out a breath in relief. They had done it. They watched the lid to the sarcophagus slide off, it landed hard on the ground. Kat held her breath as Nikos reached down inside. He straightened, holding a decorative urn just as Khnum had described. “I give you the Heart of Bast.” * * * * * Nikos took the lead as they made their way to the surface. The narrow passageway forced them to go in single file. Now that Kat possessed the Heart of Bast, theyʹd been released from the binding spell. He should feel a sense of freedom. Only he didn’t. The binding had been a pain in the butt. Hell yes. But it’d forced them together and had shown him that Kat was the only woman for
76
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt him. And she was dying. He looked behind him and bit back the curse that sprang to his lips. She insisted on carrying the urn, though her arms trembled with the weight. Every step she took seemed to drag, and her face was too pale. She always had to be independent, stubborn and in control. Screw it. Nikos stalked back toward her. “You sure this is the way out?” Kat paused, beads of sweat on her brow. “The star ceiling indicated the way. I’m sure.” Nikos nodded. “Then get on.” “Beg your pardon?” “Give me the damn urn, climb on my back, and let’s haul ass out of here.” He dared her to object. “Not one word. Just do it.” Kat blew a strand of hair off her face and frowned. “You really need to work on your bedside manner.” But she handed him the urn and, when he turned, she wrapped her arms around his neck and let him lift her up onto his back. She hardly weighed more than a feather. The way she lay her head against his shoulder made his chest tighten and his heart squeeze. Whether she knew it or not it was another sign of trust. “Tell me how a cat and dog got together,ʺ Kat said softly against his back, her voice drowsy. It alarmed him that she seemed to be losing strength so quickly. They had to get out of this underground terrain and make it to Khnum. He was counting on the ancient being able to heal her. Nikos didn’t allow any of his fear to show as he replied, keeping his voice even and relaxed. “Surely, you recall that we weren’t always enemies. When Anubis and Bast chose to meet in secret and selected us to be their personal attendants, we were thrown together often. You were such a prickly little thing, always getting your tail in a kink.” He couldn’t help chuckling. He’d forgotten that long‐ago Kat. Kat tugged on his ear. “I’m sure I had good reason.”
77
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Nikos snorted. “All you did was contradict anything I said. If I said black, you said white. If I suggested A, you adamantly argued B. You drove me crazy.” “Well, I can’t help it if you dogs need lessons in logic. You know you don’t do well unless given commands. Sit. Fetch. Beg.” Laughter colored her words, and he soaked it up, even as urgency made him pick up the pace. “Oh, I begged all right. Once I got you into bed, I was practically your damn slave.” He’d never thought a woman could dominate his attention the way she had. “Hmm. Slave. I like the sound of that. Think when we get out I might take you up on that again.” Her voice sounded weaker, slightly thready. “You do that, Kat‐nip.” Light filtered up ahead, and Nikos breathed in relief. Finally. How much time did they have left? “I’m going to put you down so I can unlock the door.” Kat slid off his back and down onto the floor. He handed her the urn, which she cradled to her chest. She threw him a feeble grin and closed her eyes. Nikos clenched his fists. He wanted to hold her, protect her, but the poison was beyond his healing capabilities, and every minute counted. He forced himself to face the wooden wall. He raised his hand, found a place of calmness in his soul and read the power of the spell. Certain he knew the type of lock that had been placed on the door, he recited the words that would unlock it. The hieroglyphics glowed in a circle and spun. The symbols fell into place, and the portal opened to the rising rays of the sun. Nikos hurried back to Kat. With enough space to maneuver now, he simply swept her and the urn up and strode quickly through the door. She didn’t react at all, and that worried him more. Early morning light poured in from several small windows along the ramped entranceway. They were nearly out. Nikos tuned into
78
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt his canine senses. He could hear the beginnings of a neighborhood coming to life. Then the hairs on his neck stood straight up, and a growl erupted from his throat. Still clasping Kat in his arms, he whirled around, determined to defend. “Leaving so soon?” Sekhmetʹs silky voice echoed in the chamber. “Ooh, forgot all about me, didn’t you?” She bared her fangs. “I didn’t forget about you. Hand over the Heart, so I can kill you both.” Her lioness rose ready to tear out of Kat’s flesh, but the poisoning kept it trapped inside. “Put me down.” Kat growled. Nikos hesitated for a moment then did as she asked. In her cat form she would be stronger, but she was too weak to transform. She stood up on shaky legs. Kat unsheathed her claws. Sekhmet did the same. Sweat dotted Kat’s brow. Nikos stepped in front of her. No, this is my fight. She growled at him. Bullshit. We’re in this together. His voice in her head was a mix of fear and tenderness. Please, Nikos. She handed over the jar. For Bast. For us. Kat wanted to kiss him, to reassure Nikos that she would survive this encounter, but she knew in her heart she didn’t stand a chance against the head lioness. Sekhmet, the goddess of Vengeance, would kill her. At least she could buy Nikos time to get out and get the Heart and information to Anubis. Nikos opened his mouth to object when Tor appeared. The young lion crouched in the corner, his eyes intensely fixed on Nikos. “Call off your son, Sekhmet.” The look on Nikos’ face appeared deadly. He stooped to place the urn behind some cement blocks lying on the floor. “You would be wiser to fear the next ruler of the pride.” Her slanted eyes burned with vengeance. “For treason, betrayal and
79
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt consorting with the enemy, I sentence you both to death.” Tor grunted in menace. He twitched his tail and kept low to the ground. Ears back, he followed Nikos’ movement with his eyes. Kat held her breath; she could feel the power in the room swell. The air thickened. Nikos drew the energy in and shifted. Tor used the opportunity to attack. The lion bowled over the dog, tumbling him back. Nikos rolled and got back up on his paws. Tor puffed up his chest and roared. He viciously went for Nikos’ muzzle. Blood dripped down the Molossian’s face. The dog staggered backwards, he shook off the hit. A fierce growl erupted from Nikos as he lunged at the lion. Tor reared up on hindquarters, and both locked in battle. Fear, for the first time, gripped her. Tor had the upper advantage. He scored another hit. Kat’s vision swam. She grew weaker by the second, her bloodstream now fully compromised by the poison. Sekhmet stood only a few feet away with her lethal claws. The head lioness seemed less interested in attacking Kat for the moment than in following the actions of her son. She beamed with pride. Jaws snapping, Nikos sank his teeth into the cat’s foreleg. Flesh ripped off. The large cat lashed back with claws swiping its sharp nails across Nikos’ back. They disengaged. The two beasts circled one another snarling, fangs and teeth showing. Droplets of sweat rolled down Kat’s face. The scene blurred, and Kat bit down hard on her lip to stay focused. Nikos had to make it out alive. He was their only chance of seeing the Heart of Bast returned, so that her beloved mistress could rise again and be reunited with her child. Nikos closed in and, with his mighty paws, knocked Tor clear across the room. Sekhmet roared in anger, her eyes glowing with the lust for the kill. “Vile dog!” She spat out. The head lioness transformed into a four‐hundred‐pound lion. Her coat gleamed with energy.
80
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Sekhmet launched herself at Nikos. “No!” Kat threw herself in the lioness’ path, raking her claws across Sekhmet’s chest, drawing first blood. Sekhmet whirled around, pinning Kat with her glare. She looked stunned. Kat breathed deeply through her nose. Her body felt sluggish. Sekhmet stalked her, forcing Kat to sidle along the wall. All she had to do was keep Sekhmet’s attention focused on her. Once Nikos won, he could escape with the Heart. “Why are you doing this?” Kat threw out. “Let me go before Ra and the council. I have the Heart of Bast to offer them. Ra should rule what punishment I receive.” She would accept anything for herself. For Nikos, nothing less than his freedom. “Wretched priestess.” Sekhmet spoke around her fangs. Her voice, low and menacing, vibrated in her throat. “I should have killed you years ago. As I did Bast.” Kat stilled. Tor and Nikos battled on. “You!” Kat gasped out. Sekhmet leaped and landed in front of Kat. Her exit blocked off. The big cat stared her down. Her powerful paws within a hair’s reach. Kat stayed on the balls of her feet. She expected Sekhmet to pounce any minute. From her vantage point, Kat could see Nikos had gained the advantage. Sekhmet’s face took on the fevered light of the huntress whose prey stood in her sights. Kat leaped out of the way as Sekhmet pounced. Claws tore into her flesh. Blood spilled from her shoulder down her arm from the long gashes. She slammed hard against the ground. Kat got to her feet, swaying. “Why?” “My father thought Bast better than I. She betrayed her own kind. I ensured no bastard dog would ever rule over cats.” Kat shook her head. Sekhmet had killed Bast. She thought she
81
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt had killed the child, too. She had no idea the son of Anubis and Bast lived! Sekhmet went for the kill. In defense, Kat thrust her arms out. The lioness hit Kat square in the chest. Flesh gave under claws slicing into Sekhmet’s body. The lioness roared in pain. They fell together. The weight of the lioness pinned Kat under. Blood coated them both. Kat felt her life essence flowing away. Her only regrets were she hadn’t told Nikos she’d fallen in love with him again and that they hadn’t made love. She would’ve liked to travel to the underworld with those memories. Concentrating, she formed the words in her mind and sent them. Kat let laughter fill her mind, hoping he heard it. Felt it. Then, with her last ounce of strength, she sent one last thought. I love you.
82
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt
Chapter Thirteen I love you. The words whispered through his mind. He caught sight of Kat’s legs poking out from under the great lioness. Absolute rage consumed Nikos. He panted heavily. His body ached from the repeated blows with his adversary. Tor came at him again. This time Nikos went high and brought his force down on the lion. No match for an older, wiser opponent, the young lion collapsed. Exhausted and defeated, the lion retreated back with his tail between his leg. Kat! No response. Fear pumped through him, fueling a burst of energy. He shifted and pulled Sekhmet’s body off Kat. The lioness transformed back into human form. Blood seeped from a gaping wound in her breast. Her chest rose and fell. She would live. Kat lay unmoving. He called to her, but she was unresponsive. He could hear the faint beat of her heart. He could feel her slipping from him. How could he lose her when he’d only just found her once more?
83
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt He howled at the injustice. He wove a spell invoking the gods’ protection to carry her soul to the afterlife where he prayed they would meet again. Blinding light filled the room. Nikos had to close his eyes against the glare. Before him stood Ra and his own master, Anubis, flanked by his personal Anubian guard. Khnum stood not far behind on wobbly legs. He used a cane to clear a path past the large Sun Moon twin guards. They had used the way of the gods, astral planes, to transport themselves to the old city. Khnum surveyed the destruction. Nikos knelt before his fallen love. Sekhmet remained unconscious and bleeding from the battle. Tor limped before Ra. His grandfather did not spare him a glance. Nikos did not care whom he offended. He addressed his master. “Anubis, we must save her.” He scooped up Kat, ready to leave. Saving Kat came first. Explanations could wait. Ra interjected. “No. She is of our pride. Mihias will see that she gets the care she needs.” The dark‐haired one moved in front of Nikos and simply waited. “See that she lives.” Nikos held the warrior’s gaze, the threat he promised real. Reluctantly, he transferred his burden. Ra waved his hand at the same time he recited a spell in the ancient language and, before their eyes, the warrior and Kat faded from sight. The dog inside him growled and lunged for its mate. Nikos fought the beast down and faced the room. “He killed my mother,” Tor roared. “He’s a dog. They’re out to destroy us. Retribution must be fulfilled.” “Silence!” The wrath on Ra’s face sent Tor quailing back. “Sekhmet exceeded my orders. I have much to say to her and you on that score. For now, I wish the truth.” “As do I,” Anubis interjected.
84
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt Nikos bowed low to both gods. He then strode across the room and reverently picked up the urn, raising it aloft for all to see. “Here lies the Heart of Bast.” Anubis sucked in his breath audibly, his eyes bright with emotion. Ra took a step forward, hand out. “What of the child?” Anubis choked out. Ra swiveled his head. “Child? What child?” “A son,” Nikos announced. “Anubis and Bast conceived a boy. I know where he was taken. I do not know if he lives.” “The child must be found.” Anubis decreed. “The child belongs to the pride,” Ra interposed softly. “You wish war?” Anubis spoke with a rumbling menace in his throat. Khnum merely shook his head. Both gods went head to head. Cat versus dog. “Enough!” Khnum, two heads shorter than both lofty gods, wedged in between them. The elder cracked both of the men on the knees with his cane. Both took a step back. In a voice as shaky as his legs, he spoke, “This child is our hope. Conceived in love, he embodies what is best for both your peoples. Apart, we have spent the centuries fighting simply to survive. We must join forces again to keep our races alive and healthy.” His fingers dug in his hands as he waited for their reaction. “The bloodlines must remain pure,” Tor disputed, a feverish light taking hold of his features. “I should be the next ruler. I will see to it that we cats overcome these mongrels. Already the blood of my mother has been shed.” Ra’s face became solemn. He strode over to his remaining daughter and laid a hand on her. “She breathes.” He waved over the golden guard. The sun twin took Sekhmet and vanished. Immediately, the dark twin reappeared, taking up position beside Ra.
85
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt “It would seem, Anubis, that you and I have much to discuss. Perhaps it is time our peoples find common ground.” Ra walked over and held out both his hands. Anubis hesitated only a moment before clasping Ra’s arms in a warrior’s shake. Nikos’ gaze met the dark twin’s. “Kat?” The dark one nodded his head. Nikos relaxed his fists. He and Kat had a chance. Somehow they would find a way to be together. Cats and dogs be damned. * * * * * Ra commands your presence. Kat left her room where she’d been kept incommunicado for several days as she fought off the effects of the poison. The anti‐venom medicine had been administered just in time, and the wounds to her chest repaired. She’d been a horrible patient. It hadn’t helped not knowing what her fate was to be. Nor had anyone told her what had happened to Nikos. Needing to know the truth at whatever cost, she hurried toward the obelisk. The Sun Moon twins, Mihias and Fane, flanked the golden portals. They waved her forward, and the doors opened. Kat stepped over the threshold and halted. Ra sat on his throne, as expected. What she hadn’t expected to see was Anubis on a similar throne at his side, the Heart of Bast placed on a pedestal between them. To the side and in a lower position, she discovered the goat god Khnum, sucking on a pipe. He winked at her, his ancient eyes twinkling. From the shadows, Nikos approached. Her heart nearly stopped. Behind her she heard the doors close. Nikos held out his hand. Kat glanced at the three gods, uncertain what to do. She squared her shoulders and lightly placed her hand in his palm, welcoming the warmth of his grip. Together they faced their masters. With a deep bow, they waited
86
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt for judgment. “Kat, Stealer of Memories,” Ra began. “I have never questioned your loyalty. One wiser than I knew you were destined to lead our race out of darkness. You have returned the Heart of Bast, my beloved daughter, to me. For that you have my deepest gratitude.” “It’s not necessary, my lord,” Kat said through dry lips. “My mistress and the pride have always been my first duty.” Beside her she sensed Nikos stir. “As it should be,” Ra accepted. “Nikos, Keeper of Secrets,” Anubis spoke. “You fulfilled the duty I assigned you. You have given me hope that my son lives somewhere in this world. Your people honor you.” “The honor is mine to serve, my lord.” Once more Nikos bowed. “What of Sekhmet?” Kat inquired. Ra lowered his eyes. “Sekhmet has been weighed against the feather of Ma’at and found guilty. Her jealousy and ambition have been her downfall. She will be dealt with accordingly.” Kat could understand the loss Ra felt. His remaining daughter, favored among his pride, had slain her own sister, Bast. It must have pained him to punish his flesh and blood. Yet, Ra would not show weakness. It was the way of their people. “Tor?” In a way, Kat felt sorry for the teenager. His mother’s treachery would ruin the offspring’s status among the pride. “He still remains next in line, unless Bast’s son is found.” Kat nodded and kept silent. Ra had spoken. “The first step has been completed,” Khnum announced with satisfaction. All eyes swiveled in his direction. “Explain,” Ra ordered. “We have waited this week and more for answers.” “The future of both races depends on finding the remaining urns and resurrecting Bast. Only then can the child take his rightful place on the throne.”
87
Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt “Where are the remaining urns?” Anubis asked, his gaze on Ra. “I commissioned the urns. I did not hide them.” Ra turned his head to face the ancient goat. “I charged you with seeing to their dispersal and protection. Where are the remaining two?” Khnum puffed on his pipe and smiled. “In due time. Before that, other matters must be taken care of as we discussed.” Anger flashed across Ra’s face. Kat tensed, aware that Anubis appeared displeased as well. “Kat, Stealer of Memories, and Nikos, Keeper of Secrets, Anubis and I charge you with the sacred duty of protecting the Heart of Bast until such time as the other urns are found and reunited and my beloved daughter resurrected. Do you accept the task?ʺ Her eyes facing straight ahead, Kat worked hard to keep the joy from showing on her face. “I accept, my lord.” “As do I,” Nikos said, his warm baritone rolling over her skin, causing her heart to leap. “Then it is decreed. You both shall guard the Heart here at the pyramid. We are all counting on you,” Ra added. With a few words and a wave of his hand, the urn lifted and floated toward the couple. Kat reached up and clasped it to her bosom. “We won’t fail, my lords.” They turned to go when Khnum stopped them. He reached into his linen jacket and extracted a key. “I have arranged a small surprise for you, my children. I believe you will not be disappointed.”

Chapter Fourteen Nikos slid the key into the lock. Before he could unlock it, Kat placed a hand on his shoulder. “Are you sure you can live here with me, protecting the Heart?” she asked. Sheʹd seen the sidelong glances, the averted eyes and even the disgust on some faces of those in her pride, as they smelled Nikos’ canine scent. Living in the pyramid wouldn’t be easy. While no one would dare go against Ra and attack, there were numerous subtle ways to make their lives hell. Nikos reached up and caressed her jaw. He leaned down and kissed her lips, a touch so soft, she pressed into the kiss for more. “I’m not going anywhere, Kat. Get used to it.” He turned back to the door. “Now let’s see what that old goat left for us.” They entered the room and halted in shock. Large palm trees rose up to the ceiling. The sound of water falling over rocks reached their ears. Together they moved farther into the lush tropical cover until the trees and plants parted to reveal a pool. Kat gurgled in laughter. “It’s gorgeous. How did he manage this?” “Who cares?” Nikos took the urn from her and carried it over to a flat stone where he placed it. He murmured a few words, wrapping a spell of protection around it. Finished, he turned, grabbed Kat and

Kat shrieked and came up sputtering. “You dog, you.” Nikos wagged his eyebrows. “Honey, we’ve only started.” He hauled her up against him, his hands scorching her through her wet shirt, as he locked lips with hers. The kiss deepened. Kat poured all her feelings into this one moment. Her love for him, which she’d rediscovered. Her fear that they might be torn apart once more. Her desire to be with him always. “I won’t leave you, Kat,” Nikos said against her lips. “I love you.” His mouth came down again hard, and she let herself drown in the emotions swamping her. “Too many clothes.ʺ She pulled at his black T‐shirt, peeling it up and over his head. “I need to feel your skin against mine. Take your shirt off, love,” Nikos commanded. Kat didn’t hesitate. She yanked the garment off and her bra, too. Like a torch, Nikosʹ gaze burned a path over her skin, heating her wherever his eyes touched. His hands came up and softly cupped her breasts. His body visibly trembled. Inside, her cat purred and stretched, wanting more. Wanting all. Nikos bent his head, took her nipple in his mouth and suckled. Her head fell back. Her hands thrust in his hair, holding him to her. Every pull of his mouth, every scrape of his teeth sent lightning bursts to her womb. She felt his hands working at her pants, trying to pull them off. He fumbled as the wet leather stuck to her skin. Nikos growled in frustration. “Get them off, Kat, before I chew them off.” Kat laughed. “In a hurry, are you?” “Do it woman, and quit talking.” Still chuckling, Kat didn’t bother undressing. She invoked a spell and let them disappear so that she stood before Nikos nude. He followed suit, then yanked her up against him. His wet body

Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt felt cool to her heated skin. She leaned up and sipped a water droplet from his chest. He shuddered at the touch of her tongue. She could feel his hardness against her stomach, and her own body clenched in response. She let her hands roam, enjoying the feel of his hard muscles. “I want you,” she boldly stated, as she took his erection in her hand and caressed the length from tip to base. “Good thing, Kat‐nip, because you’re going to have me. All of me.” He walked her backwards to where lush green grass formed a carpet. He whispered a few words, and a blanket covered the area. Nikos lifted her up and gently lowered her to the soft cloth, coming down over her. He brushed a wet strand of hair away from her eyes. “This is right, Kat. Perfect. As long as you believe in us, we can get through anything.” She stared into his face, seeing love, determination, courage. She reached up and lightly traced the seam of his mouth. “I love you, and I do believe.” Nikos’ head dropped down. As he kissed her, he nudged her legs apart. His fingers separated her folds to find the nub of her desire. Back and forth he rubbed. His tongue mimicked the actions of what he would soon do. He brought her to the edge and back, over and over until she was pleading with him to end it. He settled between her legs, and she felt him slide in inch by inch. Her body sheathed him in its clasp and pleasure shot through her at the contact. He moved slowly, in and out. The cat in her demanded more. Harder. Faster. She lifted her hips and met his thrusts. She saw the strain in his neck muscles as he pounded into her, the tempo increasing. Her nerve endings tightened. She felt as if she were being

Heart of the Nile by Gabriella Hewitt sucked into a vortex, spinning out of control. Higher. Tighter. Until the release came in a mind‐numbing explosion that rocked her with such bliss, tears leaked from the corners of her eyes. Nikos collapsed beside her and gathered her close. “It’s even better than I remembered.” He nuzzled the side of her face, seeming to draw her scent inside him. “I will never get enough of you.” “It won’t be easy,” Kat whispered. “No, but we’ll make it work. We’ve got centuries to get it right.” He rolled her on top of him and kissed the tip of her nose. She stared down into his face and knew he was right. Destiny had reunited them. And, soon their peoples would live as one. Cats and dogs faced a whole new future. The End
