Big, Blooming & Wild! Greenhouse Effect Nia K. Foxx Horticulturist Jennifer Wilde of the Institute of Big Basin Wildlife (IBBW) knows a visit from the company’s new CEO can’t be good news. The man is rumored to have left a trail of ex-employees in his wake. Determined to deliver an A-1 presentation she’s far from prepared for the instant attraction she feels for the sexy executive. One thing’s for certain, she’s never gone in for office romances and she won’t start now. Wik Redwood is in “heat,” or more accurately in pollen. His urges are definitely impacting everyone around him and if he doesn’t mate soon… The bottom line is he needs to find the right woman, and fast. An accidental crossing of paths has him setting his sights on a certain rubenesque scientist who makes his roots tingle. He’s determined to have her yielding to the Botan way of loving.

Prologue It was the moaning that pulled him from a restless slumber. The sounds seemed to resonate in the still crisp morning air. Primal noises. It was the female’s pleading whimpers which managed to push him into full wakefulness. Wik heard the distinct sound of male groaning. They were sounds of pleasure. Ecstasy. He envied the couple their wee-hour romp, although he wished they’d chosen a less public place for their affectionate exchange. He wasn’t the only Botan in the forest, but he was the only one of shifting age who spent a great deal of time in his redwood form. For him there was solace to be found amongst his brethren who’d yet to reach the age of maturity. He was fairly certain he was the only one being impacted by the loud sexual display. As evidence, a branch sprouted and grew in a most unseemly fashion from his wide trunk. There was no mistaking the obvious phallus that sprang forth. “Harder. Fuck me harder, Riley.” The Botan must have given her exactly what she was asking for because an even louder moan permeated the forest. “Oh yes, my ass too.” Of all his dumb luck. He’d hoped to get a decent night’s sleep for once. He wanted to be in a halfway civil mood when he conducted his tour today of one of their key sites. So much for that idea. Although it was still early enough for him to gain a few hours’ rest he’d not be able to do it with the wood he now sported. Damn Riley and his mate. He wasn’t sure how much longer he’d be able to put up with being in such close proximity to all the other mated Botans. Granted, he was happy for them all, but he was fairly sure he’d die from horniness or bludgeon some unsuspecting passerby if he didn’t find his own mate.

Chapter One Stellar! The word leapt into her mind almost immediately as Jennifer glared at the flat tire her hybrid car sported. She swallowed the curse which threatened to fly after remembering her mechanic’s advice the last time she’d had the car serviced. If only she’d heeded his warning and replaced the worn tires, she wouldn’t be in her current dilemma. Instead, she’d put tires at the top of her personal to-do list and promptly forgotten. Had time really gone by so quickly? So much for going into work early. Of course the flat picked the most opportune moment. Today, the executives of the Institute of Big Basin Wildlife (IBBW) were due in the satellite office, her division. Among their itinerary was a tour of her unit. In her five-year career with IBBW she’d never met with any of the higher ups for longer than a few moments let alone hosted any visits. Those brief encounters were usually at corporate functions she couldn’t finagle her way out of. She didn’t look forward to the visit, which would most assuredly take up a chunk of her morning and keep her away from actual work. Unlike so many of her peers, she didn’t go out of her way to dwell in the limelight. Neither a praise seeker nor attention getter, she was content being left to her work. For her entire tenure she’d managed to function in that way. Today things were going to change. No matter how it was worded, ultimately the tour was an inspection. She tried to convince herself she wasn’t under direct scrutiny. There really wasn’t any need for the paranoia since her work was always exemplary. Her reports were punctual, well organized, and her research spoke for itself. She’d produced enough results in the area of plant breeding to keep her direct supervisor happy and at bay. While an inspection of her division was probably long overdue, she couldn’t help but be a little on edge about the executives’ involvement in the process. Hell, even

her boss, Randy, seemed nervous about the impending visit. His normally lackadaisical approach to work had become a lot more formalized over the last week and quite frankly he was becoming a nagging pain in Jennifer’s very generous ass. The institute was involved in everything from developing conservation standards to medicinal research. They fell under the umbrella of a larger conglomerate she’d lost interest in trying to decipher long ago. The bottom line was her tiny unit had been ignored long before she came on board so the sudden interest was unprecedented, at least as far as she knew. Her sixth sense told her today’s tour didn’t bode well. The winds of change were definitely in the air and she was certain it carried the name Wik Redwood, scientist extraordinaire, who had taken over the reins as Chief Executive Officer for IBBW. She hadn’t met him personally, but the shake up he’d caused throughout the organization had definitely created a buzz, which trickled down to her division. Apparently the man was rumored to be as ruthless as he was brilliant, and gauging from what she’d heard, he was on a mission. Initially, she’d found amusement in seeing how many feathers were ruffled by this shift in power. It was amazing how efficient people became when their jobs might be on the line. It would only stand to reason she’d feel the effects of the shake up eventually, but it didn’t mean she had to like it one bit. Needless to say, the last thing she wanted was to be late today of all days. She didn’t mind admitting she loved her job and wasn’t above asking for a little divine intervention to get her through the morning. A long time had passed since she’d last thought to commune with a higher power, so Jennifer hoped someone was still tuning in. She turned what she hoped to be sincere eyes heavenward and invoked her plea. “Please don’t let this day get any worse.”

*** Ten minutes. It was the time she had left before the suits were due to arrive. A silent thanks was given as she shrugged into the lab coat she’d donned only a few times in her career. Today, of course, was different from other days because she had to definitely look the part of a sharp scientist.

“Diane, did you run a test on the samples we took yesterday?” she asked her assistant. She and Diane had worked together for four years and the younger woman proved to be more than just a pretty face in their boss’s many attempts at placing eye candy in the division. Randy was a known womanizer but he was smart enough to keep his harassment just kosher enough to keep human resources off his back. Jennifer had only been subjected to a few of his appreciative gazes, directed at her well endowed bust line, but she’d immediately called Randy on it, which seemed to be enough to have him flying right, at least with her. She was pretty sure her breasts were her best assets to appeal to the man. He seemed to prefer his hires on the young and slender side, which most definitely excluded her. She was grateful that when he’d selected Diane, he’d actually chosen someone who possessed good credentials and a passion for the job. It was an added bonus Diane had a similar no nonsense attitude when it came to Randy. “Nope, the boss man has been in and out of here all morning with his various requests. He must have me confused with the janitorial staff. If he tells me one more time to wipe down a counter, I swear I’m going to scream.” “You’re not the only one he’s getting to around here. I tell you what, when this inspection is done what say you we go out for a round?” Diane paused as she placed a tray of glass testers in an overhead cabinet. “You mean like actual drinks?” “Appetizers too if you feel up to it,” Jennifer suggested. “You’re kidding, right?” Her surprise was understandable; Jennifer usually kept her work and private life separate. Diane was one of the few people she’d befriended at the lab and they’d only gone out twice for after work drinks. “No, I’m serious. I’ll even buy. This inspection has had us all in knots. What better way to celebrate the end of it?” “Well, who can turn down an offer like that?”

She really did like Diane. Although the woman was a good ten years younger than her own thirty-three she seemed to have a great head on her shoulders. In some ways she reminded Jennifer of her past self. Mature, responsible, and very driven. If the young woman wasn’t careful she’d end up married to her research in the same way Jennifer had. Not that she regretted anything in her life. She had a career doing what she loved, and had indulged in a couple of long term relationships that ended amicably enough. She felt lucky to be happy with her life. “Why don’t we get those samples ready to test? I hate just standing around here polishing the silver because a few suits are coming.” Diane’s face practically beamed at the suggestion. “Bless you. I don’t think I’ll want to clean my apartment for the next week after this experience.” Amen to that, she thought as she readied the high-powered microscope. The two women worked in quiet unison and before long they had four samples ready to be examined and documented. “I guess there’s no chance of a little Led Zeppelin today?” Diane asked. Jennifer could only imagine the look on the executives’ faces if they came into a lab filled with rock music. “Not today.” Diane gave a disapproving sigh before handing over the first sample. “…and this, gentlemen, is the lab where we conduct all of our plant breeding and growth research. It looks as if we’ve caught our resident genius in the middle of something.” Randy’s booming voice gave both women a heads up to their arrival only seconds before the group entered the lab. Jennifer took a deep breath and plastered a smile on her face she hoped passed as genuine. She had her presentation ready and felt prepared for any questions the men could throw her way. Randy’s slight frame was the first through the double doors and he stood aside to hold them open for the VIPs. “Holy shit!” The low mumbled words reached Jennifer’s ears but she could hardly blame her assistant because the same thought rang through her mind at the procession entering her lab. Each man looked to be similar in height, which was pretty

amazing since Jennifer pegged them to be about six foot three. Talk about genetic selection. The men had to be relatives. She noted the men’s sun-kissed complexions and blond hair mingled with flecks of brown. Three of the men wore conservatively cropped haircuts that differed only slightly in length. Jennifer wouldn’t be surprised to find they all shared similar eye coloring too. The dark expensive looking suits they wore had to be tailor made in order to fit their generous frames. The men stopped just inside the lab, making the normally substantial space feel a bit cramped. Her gaze focused on the fourth suit. He stood an inch, maybe two, above the rest, and if her eyes weren’t playing tricks on her, he appeared to be a little broader in the shoulders as well. Unlike the others he wore his hair daringly long. The thick strands just touched the tops of his shoulders and feathered lightly around him. Jennifer was certain the mane would be soft and lush to the touch. She could almost feel its heavy weight between her fingers, although she was disturbed her mind would even register such information. Her eyes drifted to his squared jaw line, and upward to his straight jutting nose. Her gaze traveled further still until it settled on dark, deep-set eyes. His features were perfect yet she’d hesitate to call him handsome, at least not in the traditional sense. His look was far too severe for that. If anything, he looked a bit… well, untamed. She would have expected to see him guarding some head of state, even a mercenary for hire, not being an executive for IBBW. Still, it didn’t stop her heart rate from speeding up. Nor did it prevent her mouth from going dry as his gaze honed in on her from across the room. It was a bit unnerving. So much so that she shifted her gaze to the other men in the entourage. All of whom seemed to regard her with unwavering stares. Their serious expressions were enough to send a lesser person cowering. As much as Jennifer prided herself on being a strong woman capable of standing up to anyone’s scrutiny, these men were a little much for her. She couldn’t believe one of them was the acclaimed scientist she’d heard so much about. They were all a far cry from the image she’d conjured up in her head.

She redirected her attention to the only man in the room who didn’t make her feel as if she were under a microscope. It would help if she could focus on what Randy rattled on about. At least that way she could segue into her presentation and get the damned tour over and done with quickly. The only problem was she was having a hard time concentrating on her boss’s words, very aware of four pairs of eyes directed at her. Call her crazy, but Jennifer was certain she could tell which one felt as if he were looking right into her soul. For good measure, she squared her shoulders and smiled brighter as she did her best to ignore the very open looks she was receiving. It took more effort than she cared to admit but she was finally able to filter Randy’s words through her distracted mind. She wasn’t surprised to hear he hadn’t paused long enough for introductions before going into an overview of the projects he “supervised” in her unit. A sudden movement caught the attention of the room as one of the executives stepped forward, effectively silencing Randy’s speech. Out of the corner of her eye, Jennifer could see who’d broken rank. As much as she wanted to resist looking, her eyes seemed to have a mind of their own. It was no surprise to see the fourth man standing ahead of the group, his dark eyes pinning her with an expression she couldn’t quite decipher. A ripple of heat traveled down her spine and she had to stop herself from visibly shaking off the after-effects of the sensation. The man dismissed Randy easily. “I’m quite sure Jennifer is perfectly capable of explaining the various projects she’s been responsible for spearheading.” For a brief moment she felt paralyzed, trapped somewhere between feeling satisfaction over the end of Randy’s preening and being completely unprepared for the sexy rasp of his low voice. “Of course, Mr. Redwood, I mean Wik. Jennifer is more than competent in her field and has several impressive projects I’m certain you’ll find quite fascinating.” As uncomfortable as Randy’s bumbling response appeared to be for him, Jennifer was grateful for the interjection because it gave her the opportunity to recover from her surprise at hearing the man speak. Next came the shock of learning he was

Wik Redwood. Thank God none of the other eggheads in her discipline had ever looked like him, otherwise she might have been a bit too distracted to focus on her coursework in college. She’d always prided herself on being of a different ilk, one not ruled by libido. Her brain, on the other hand, was currently headed down a path not quite appropriate for her environment. Wik’s overt stare didn’t help matters. “Jennifer, the floor is yours,” Wik added with a slight nod which caused several strands of his hair to fall forward. “But first I think we should get the matter of introductions out of the way.” Randy sputtered his apologies for the oversight, but was immediately cut off as Wik named each member of his party and waited while she followed suit.

*** Mine. The thought was instantaneous and communicated just as quickly to the other members of his entourage as they were introduced to Jennifer Wilde and her assistant Diane Richards. None of the other Botan males needed clarification about who Wik referred to and none bothered to remind him they were all happily mated males. He didn’t exactly leave much room for communication since he’d effectively cut off the telepathic link used by his species. The last thing he wanted to do was share the intimate details of all the things he’d like to do to her. She was a vision of loveliness, even in the sterile lab coat that hid her thick curves from his voracious gaze. Her auburn hair was pulled away from her face, giving him full view of its unmarred perfection. He was certain her skin, unencumbered by makeup, would be like silk to the touch. His fingers itched to do just that, but if given the opportunity he wouldn’t stop there. He needed to get closer to her. He wanted to unbind the waves of luscious hair and feel the loose strands cascade between his fingers. His comrades would understand if he dismissed everyone in the room. Wik knew they would gladly give him the privacy he needed to claim his woman right there on one of the metal tables. The ache in his loins spread with the thought but he knew such an act wasn’t feasible, at least not at the moment.

Five years was a long time to be in pollen for a Botan. Most of his brethren who’d reached pollisexation around the same time were already mated. For them the process seemed easy enough. The shift from tree to human form was a celebrated event amongst his species. It signaled the beginning of a new phase in their lifecycle. They could finally take the knowledge passed down to them from their savior Seq Viren and from the Elder of their small community to begin forging out their place within the brotherhood. More importantly it marked the commencement of the search for a human mate. His second in command, Guner, was just a year younger and he’d already enjoyed three years with his woman whom he’d met on a nature walk. The lucky bastard. Wik had spent many a month, after his initial shift, in his redwood form hoping for such a happenstance to befall him. What did he have to show for his efforts? Nothing, unless long hours spent trying to wash the markings of a territorial mountain lion off counted. He’d tried everything from the bar scene to speed dating, and been disappointed at every turn. Sure he’d met women, but so many of the ones who held physical appeal to him were not happy in their own skin. It was annoying how easily they accepted the outlandish standards of beauty and were willing to brutalize their bodies to attain unhealthy results. Like all Botan males he preferred a woman of physical substance. For him intellect and self-worth were also key. The last thing he wanted was a person so insecure with herself she couldn’t recognize her own beauty or value. Discouraged by the prospect pool, Wik opted to spend his post-pollisexation years dedicated to the advancement of IBBW. Long hours, new strides in research, and lobbying had consumed his every waking moment yet it only managed to take the edge off his natural urges. His desire to find his mate was instinctually ingrained in his DNA and no amount of work could squelch it. It didn’t help living on a private compound with other mated Botans. Although his own home was separated by several acres, he still stumbled across couples as they hiked the lands. On more than one occasion he’d come upon a pair so caught up in the throes of passion they didn’t notice his approach.

Just as difficult were the Friday communal dinners. As much as he enjoyed the social interaction, he left each night with the reminder he would be going home to an empty bed. On those particularly rough nights he shed his human form and took root in the nurturing soil. To have it all now on the verge of ending felt a bit surreal. Yet there was no doubt in his mind Jennifer Wilde would be his mate. He studied the confident poise of her stance and knew she was a woman who was completely secure within herself. She’d sized them all up quickly, her eyes lingering on him briefly before feigning attention to her mousy supervisor’s speech. While most women would have shown some interest in one, if not all of the Botan males, she had chosen to ignore them altogether. Even her assistant had eyeballed them equally, drawing her shoulders back to give a better view of her full, round breasts. Not his Jennifer. “Thank you, Mr. Redwood. I’ll try not to bore you all with this part of the tour.” Her voice was like honey, sweet and smooth flowing over him. His groin tightened in response, confirming the conclusion he’d already come to. “Please, call me Wik,” he corrected. Her smile faltered briefly but she nodded in acknowledgement. Her eyes lit on the other men in his entourage and he felt an overwhelming need to draw her attention back to him. Having already done extensive audits of the reports she’d handed in over her tenure, he listened with half an ear as she went on to describe her various projects. There was no doubt in his mind she was a brilliant scientist and would continue to be a valued asset at IBBW. Of course, that assumed they’d be able to drag themselves into a lab after he put his plan in motion to have her for his own. Unable to wait for the more hands-on part of her presentation, he took it upon himself to begin a perusal of her lab, pleased to hear the slight pause at his unexpected movement. He pretended a brief interest in looking at the few specimens in various stages of experimentation. Each sampling brought him closer to her workstation where she stood confidently. “You seem to have few examples of your work here,” he commented, only steps away from her now.

“Most of my success stories are housed in the greenhouse. I try to split an equal amount of time between here and there.” “So I assume it will be the next stop on our tour?” He was close enough now to catch a whiff of her scent, a light exotic blend which set his body to tingling. Instinctively he inhaled her fragrance, committing her very essence to memory. His body’s response was just as instinctive, pushing his budding erection into a full salute within the confines of his pants. He rounded the counter where she stood, his movements languid. “Of course. Actually I was just going to suggest we go there now unless any of you had questions.” Wik didn’t miss the catch in her voice as he came to stand closely behind her, definitely closer than propriety called for but certainly not close enough for him. “Not just yet. Tell me about the experiment you were working on before we came in.” Should we leave you and your female alone? The amused telepathic question came from Guner. For several moments Wik contemplated his response. As much as he wanted nothing more than to lift her on the counter top and become better acquainted, he doubted she would appreciate such behavior, at first. No, he sent before ending communication. “We’re just in the beginning stages, but we’re experimenting with cross breeding two very different species and examining the hybrids’ cellular makeup. Our hope is to see how well adapted the offspring will be to flourishing in less than optimal conditions.” “Cross breeding? Definitely an area of great interest to the institute. What are your findings?” “Right now, nothing conclusive. We’re really in the beginning stages of our work on this project, but if you’re really interested I’ll be sure to get Randy the results as soon as they’re available.”

It wasn’t the response he’d hoped for. At the very least he wanted her to suggest presenting her findings directly. He realized she thought to have as minimal contact with him as possible. She’d actually thought to dismiss them so easily. Dismiss him. Not likely. “Why don’t we show you gentlemen the nursery where I keep our more prized research?” she suggested politely. He noticed she didn’t leave much opportunity for a response before moving quickly to a locked door marked “Confidential.” Her body language spoke volumes as they made their way across the private landing which led to the nursery. He noted her stiff back, short brisk steps and the distance she kept between herself and the executives. She’d also managed to insert Randy and her assistant between herself and his entourage. Wik smiled to himself at her efforts. He sensed her urgency in getting the tour done as quickly as possible. His fingers itched to reach out for her; it was a near overwhelming desire. Through the gap of people he zeroed in on the sway of her hips barely visible under her bulky lab coat. He relished the thought of removing the unflattering garment. In fact, he could honestly admit he wanted to get her out of all of her clothing, to have her lush body laid bare for him. Seq help him, but he doubted he could wait too long to have her.

Chapter Two He stared after her. She knew it without turning to confirm her suspicions. His eyes had followed her every movement from the moment he stepped into her lab, leaving her feeling a bit out of sorts. Fortunately, the others had the decency to appear oblivious to the lingering looks. All except Diane, who’d given her two not so discreet nudges. What made matters worse was her reaction to him. A person would have to be dead not to find him striking. And he’d certainly managed to make her insides quiver, a rare happenstance indeed. He was tall and broad, just the way she liked. His arms made a woman want to curl up in them forever. Jennifer suspected thickly honed muscles lay beneath his designer suit, just waiting to be revealed. Her observations hadn’t stopped there; how could they when her eyes were drawn to another impressive point of interest? Judging by the outline of his package, she was certain he had more than enough to offer a woman. Her knees had gone weak after noticing his evident arousal, and it had taken every ounce of willpower for her not to stare. Her steps quickened as she remembered the bulge. With nervous fingers she extracted the set of keys that would let her into the secured greenhouse. Just a little longer and Wik Redwood would be far enough away to no longer be a distraction. She barely waited for the men to file into the room before starting on the next part of her presentation, centered around a new pesticide which also fostered plant growth. “We’re still testing names, but have become fond of ‘Grow Safe.’ It’s an ecoconscious formula that will be packaged in pretreated soil to effectively combat any pest or weed infestations. While there are still a battery of tests to be done, I’m confident we’ll have a viable product to submit for federal approval as early as the end of this

year.” Jennifer shoveled a sample of the earth into her hand before approaching the stern faces with her coveted work. “The soil is very rich and odorless as you can tell.” She extended a sample to a man in the entourage furthest from Wik, determined to ignore his presence altogether. The man’s reaction was instant as he took a step back from the harmless sample contained in her hand. In fact, all of the men retreated a bit, staring at the dirt as if it were poison. Jennifer stood for several stunned seconds while her brain tried to wrap around their reactions. She swallowed a laugh at her first conclusion. Were these men so used to the boardroom they were repelled by the idea of getting their hands dirty? This was rich. Grown men acting as if she were offering them something completely illegal. “My companions and I are very well versed on this current project. Please be assured we have the strictest confidence in your work.” She wanted to roll her eyes when Wik stepped forward as the voice of reason. His own reaction had been minimal, at least from what she could tell. Jennifer found herself with a similar reaction as her visitors to Wik’s approaching form. Only, she had no time to step away. His thick, firm fingers wrapped around her wrist. It was a hold meant to keep her in place. Air caught in her throat before being slowly expelled, and her heart rate spiked as he raised her hand to his face in an action that looked like he was on the verge of kissing her inner wrist. His head dipped only slightly as his eyes locked boldly with hers. His stare was intense and she felt powerless to look away, as if under compulsion. She hadn’t realized until that moment just how beautiful his eyes were. They reminded her of a rare piece of darkly colored jade she’d seen only once before. A man didn’t have a right to be so perfectly endowed; it just wasn’t fair for women who aspired to function at a normal level. As much as she hated to admit it she enjoyed his nearness and the giddiness it induced. There wasn’t a doubt in her mind if she just leaned in a smidge his head would descend toward hers to deliver what she suspected would be an earth-shattering kiss. The shape of his lips alone promised an enjoyable experience.
