Mounted Troops of the Imperial German Army Ca. 1914 Though the German Army retained mounted troops and used horses for transport until the end of World War II these, the last mounted troops of Imperial Germany were really the last large cavalry force. THese troops were used at the beginning of the war for scout and patrol duties. Trench warfare and the machine gun and airplane soon rendered them obsolete, ending a tradition forever. 1.
