Christmas Carol
Chapter One
A
s soon as she passed the Texas state line, Red felt an excitement in the pit of her stomach. It had been six years. She could barely believe that the years had flown by. When she’d left she was running from her life now she was running back to the place she had hated so much. Well, her real was Rani Elissa Davis, but with flaming locks of red hair, she was nicknamed Red as a kid. She’d grown up in a dysfunctional home. Hell most of the kids that grew up in the eighties had dysfunctional families. Her mother liked to drink; she might as well have been a permanent fixture in the little dive called Cactus Jack’s. Her father worked on an oilrig and was gone all week. When Fridays came along all the good ole boys came home and the little city of Edom boomed with trouble. On the outskirts of town, Red had been born and raised. She was the youngest. The oldest was her big brother Rory. Rory walked on water in her eyes. Never had she loved someone as much as she loved 1
Hollie Davidson her big, tough brother. He had been the rock that kept her together. The mentor that led her on a straight and narrow road. He was her protector, and more like a father then her own had ever been. Red had only been seventeen when she left town. She’d recently graduated and had been given a scholarship to a local community college. But she’d wanted more. She didn’t want to wind up pregnant and married, living in a trailer, to a husband named Billy Bob. She had dreams of being something, and staying in Edom just wasn’t in her cards. The night of her graduation, Rory gave her card with two thousand dollars in it. He fixed up her old black 1975 Pinto, and she drove away. It was the hardest thing she’d ever done but looking back now, she knew it was in the cards. **** “Shit, I think I ate a bug.” Red began to laugh as Diane started gagging. “This is not funny, Red. Where in the hell are we?” “We, my friend, just got into Texas. We’s in Texas, honey.” “Is it always this hot in Texas?” Red pulled over on the side of the road so she could put the top back up. “It’s December, Diane. This is cold for Texans.” She looked at the temperature knob. “It‘s sixty degrees. How can you be hot?” “Um, hello, that stupid ass sun is burning upon me.” 2
Christmas Carol
Red got back on the road and continued driving. “Diane, you promised that you wouldn’t be so uptight.” She pulled the mirror down and began looking at her teeth. “What am I doing? Red, I said I would come.” “No, Diane, you didn’t, you lost the bet.” “Well, anyways, I will be social. I don’t have to like this one freaking bit.” Diane laid her head back against her pillow. “Wake me up when Christmas is over.” Red turned the radio on. An old song came on and she began to sing along. “Oh, God, Red turn this off.” “Diane, how can you not like CCR?” “Who the hell is CCR? Red sang a little louder. “ Heard the singers playing, how we cheered for more. The crowd had rushed together, trying to keep warm. Still the rain kept pouring, falling on my ears. And I wonder, still I wonder, who'll stop the rain.” “Oh, Lord, shut up, Red.” The song ended and Red stopped singing. “My brother Rory had every album of CCR. They are an awesome band.” “They were, you mean.” “Oh, shut up and go to sleep, Diane.” **** As she began to see signs leading her home, Red 3
Hollie Davidson became nervous. Six years was a long time. Her mama was still living in the old mobile home out of RT 22. Rory had moved into Dallas Fort Worth and was doing well for himself. She wasn’t sure what he did, but every once in a while she would receive an envelope with some money. She knew better then to send it back. Rory would kick her ass. He was just the best brother in the world. A soft trickle of rain beat down on the windshield. It was getting colder. Now, when it sleets in Texas, they close the city down. Texans are just not snowbirds. Thankfully, it was raining but the weather wasn’t cold enough to produce sleet. She was getting tired, but according to her map she only had two more hours till she arrived in the big city of Dallas. **** Red pulled into the apartment complex around twelve. She knew that Rory wouldn’t be there. He had sent her a key. “Diane, we are here.” Diane stretched and looked up. “Where are we?” “My brother’s apartment. Come on. We’ll get our stuff later.” Both girls grabbed their purses and a backpack and headed up the steps. Red opened the door and they went inside. Red first found the guest room, and Diane went straight to bed. Red then looked around, found her brother’s room and was asleep as soon as she hit the mattress. 4

Chapter Two
“H
ey, Klint, you sure Rory ain’t going to mind?” Klint looked at his watch. “Man, it’s seven in the morning. I’m exhausted, and I’m not driving out to the ranch. Rory is in Austin ‘til tomorrow night.” “You have the key?” “Well, dumb ass, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t.” Klint unlocked the door and they both went inside. “You can have the guest room.” Klint sat on the couch and grabbed the remote. He needed to unwind before getting some sleep. Usually he would have stayed the night in San Antonio, but they had a lot to do so they decided to drive back. Klint had just gotten too tired to drive all the way home. There were many nights he would sleep in the guest room, or on Rory’s couch. He took off his shirt and leaned back, putting his feet on the coffee table. His eyes began getting heavy. Just as he was about to fall asleep, he heard the loudest scream, and jumped to his feet. Kevin came running out with a girl chasing him. “You rapist, you asshole, stay away from me.” 5
Hollie Davidson Kevin covered his head, and she tried to whack him again with an umbrella. “I didn’t touch you.” Another girl, with red hair, ran into the living room in nothing but a T-shirt. “What the hell is going on?” Klint looked at the girls “Who are you two, and what are you doing here?” The girl with the umbrella tried to hit Kevin again. Kevin grabbed it away from her. “Bitch, are you crazy?” “Who are you calling a bitch, Neanderthal?” The redhead moved closer to the other girl. “Who are you?” “Who are you?” “My name is Red.” “Well, what are you doing in my friend’s apartment?” “He gave me the key.” Klint scratched his head. “Sweetheart, Rory’s not here. He’ll be back tomorrow.” Diane glared at Kevin, then faced Klint. “Look, you two muscle-bound freaks, Red is supposed to be here. You are not. Now you two need to leave.” Kevin put his hands on his hips. “ I ain’t leaving. Besides, bros are closer than hoes.” Red quickly answered, “My brother said I could stay here.” Klint gasped. “Rani?” Red froze. “Nobody calls me that.” Klint was in shock. Rory’s little sister had grown up, and damn, did she grow up well. “Rani Elissa Davis, otherwise known as Red. My God, girl, you grew up.” 6
Christmas Carol
“Who are you?” He moved closer, and she backed up. “I’m hurt, you don’t even recognize me. It’s me, Klint.” **** It was Red’s turn to gasp. She didn’t have time to think before he took her in his arms, hugging her. She wrapped her arms around his neck. Klint had grown up right alongside her. Well, not really her, but Rory. Klint and Rory had attended elementary together, junior high and even high school. They were best friends. Klint and his family lived on a farm across the road from Rory and Rani. Klint had two brothers and parents Red would have died to have. His mom was always baking and dad was always working on the land. They had huge parties, BBQ’s, and you could see the love they had for their kids. “Damn, it’s been what, six years?” He let her go and she tried to collect her thoughts. Klint had changed. Sure, he’d always been big and muscular, but now he was huge. His hair was long and wavy. She remembered him as a teenager, her brother’s best friend. Now he was grown. “Yeah, it’s been six years. My God, Klint, you’ve gotten huge. You aren’t using roids, are you? “No, Rani. I don’t use steroids. I’m disciplined and I work out every day.” Diane yawned. “I’m very tired and I would love to 7
Hollie Davidson stay up and converse, but I’m going to bed.” She pointed to the couch. “You can sleep on the couch.” She turned, her long brown hair slapping Kevin in the face as she left. “Where in the hell did you find that woman?” Red tried to hold back her laughter. Diane could be a cold-hearted bitch, but Red loved her like a sister. “I am guessing you’re Kevin.” He winked. “Hey, Red.” “Her name is Diane, and she’s my friend. We went to college together.” Kevin sat on the recliner. “Well, who lit the fuse on her tampon?” Klint threw a pillow from the couch at Kevin. “Kevin, shut up. Look, we’ll sleep out here. Go ahead and get some sleep. We can talk in the morning.” “Are you sure, Klint? It’s more sensible that I sleep on the couch since I’m smaller.” “Well, you got the bed first. Get some sleep. Good night, Rani.” “Klint, I don’t go by Rani. I go by Red.” He sat back down and put his feet up. “I never called you Red, and I ain’t starting now.” “Goodnight, Klint.” Red walked out, leaving them alone. **** Klint woke with a loud hissing sound. Kevin was standing outside smoking a cigarette. “What are you doing?” Kevin pointed to the kitchen. “Queen Bitch is 8

making an espresso. I can’t smoke in the apartment, it will ruin her delicate pink lungs.” Klint laughed as he stood up to stretch. The couch was not meant for his six-foot-four frame. “Where’s Rani?” Diane poked her head out of the kitchen. “Why do you insist on calling her Rani?” “Well for one thing that is her name.” “She goes by Red.” “Her name is Rani, and I will not call her Red. Besides, Red was a childhood name her brother called her. She is not a child anymore.” Diane grabbed her drink and walked out. Klint went in the kitchen for a Coke. He never liked coffee. His choice in the morning was a cold, crisp Coke. He could not imagine why in the hell Rani could have become friends with someone like Diane. Sure, she was pretty, but there was a board stuck up her ass that even a lumberjack couldn’t recover. She looked like one of those prissy prom queens that he had hated so badly in school. The kind that turned their noses up at him and Rory. He wasn’t good enough for them. Never had been. But now those once stuck-up snobs were slipping numbers in his pocket, begging to get in his bed. Sure, he could be like the others and just have his pick but the memory of the rejection and the way he was treated burned in his soul.

rowing up on the farm was hard. Looking back now, he wouldn’t say they were poor. His mama grew her own vegetables. They stocked the freezer with deer meat and wild hog. They butchered cows, chickens and hunted rabbit. Their family was no way near religious but his daddy always said God provided, and he did. They never went hungry, just without the extra things. When he was twelve, for his birthday, his dad took him to the old shed and opened the doors. Inside was a box filled with parts and an old frame to a dirt bike. JJ, his dad, put his arm on Klint’s shoulder and simply said. “The best things in life son are those that you work for or you make yourself.” Klint had been mad, damn mad at having to build that old bike, and it took months and months of him bitching, moaning and sweating, but the day that thing started was one of the best days in his life. Rory and Klint had built it from nothing to the best damn dirt bike ever made. He still had it. The only friends he had growing up on the farm 10
Christmas Carol
was his two older brothers, Kevin and Kalvin. Being the youngest wasn’t easy, but it made him strong. Now he was the youngest, but the biggest. He took a lot of beatings growing up from the boys in school for being a farm boy. He would go home in tears and his dad would take him outside and whoop him up some more. “Klint, if you want to succeed in life, you need to learn to fight for what you believe in. Never start a fight, son, but never be the last to walk away.” From that day on, Klint would come home with black eyes and bruised ribs. He wouldn’t cry about it, he just took the beatings and went on. Then one day, it was fourth grade, Rory Davis came to school. Klint was on the playground getting knocked around by a few of the popular boys. Rory simply walked over to the group, grabbed the leader and kicked his ass. Rory and Klint got suspended that day, but they were never picked on again. That began a life-long friendship. Rory lived across Rt. 22 in an old beat-up mobile home. The first time Klint went to his house, he met Rory’s mom. She was sitting on the front porch with a six-pack and an old transistor radio. In the yard was a little red-headed girl playing in the sprinkler. Rani couldn’t have been more t hen three or four. She ran over to Rory and hugged his leg. Rory hugged her back, and she went back to play in the sprinkler. Even at such a young age, Klint knew that Rory was protective of his little sister. 11
Hollie Davidson There were many days that Rory had to take Rani, or Red, as he called her, to Klint’s house. Klint’s mom Opal never seemed to mind. She always took Rani in the house and she would stay there all day working in the kitchen. At lunch time, Klint and Rory would eat, then back out in the woods again they would go. They owned the land, they swam, the fished, the hunted they were one hundred percent boys. He knew that Rory hid a lot. There were times that Rory would show up with a black eye or a bruise on his face. Rory’s father was a son of a bitch and he didn’t care who knew it. Klint was not allowed to go to Rory’s house. JJ had put a stop to that when Rory’s dad showed up one night drunk, looking for Rani and Rory. JJ refused to let them get in his old truck. Of course, Rory’s dad backed down from the powerhouse JJ and left. JJ and Opal left with Rory and Rani, only to return a few minutes later with them still in the truck. Rani was crying, and Rory looked madder then hell. He never knew what happened, and Rory wouldn’t tell. All he knew was that Rani and Rory stayed the summer with them. **** “Good morning.” Rani walked in wearing a pair of shorts and a tight hot pink top that read ‘Princess’. He still couldn’t get over how she’d grown. Rory would freak out seeing his little sister looking so good. He was going to have to hide her from the guys. 12
Christmas Carol
“Did you sleep well?” He lied. “Yeah, I slept great.” “You never were a good liar, Klint. When you lie, your eyes squint. Your mom gave away your secret to me a long time ago.” He laughed. “Okay, Okay, it sucked. I’m too big for that little couch. Would you like a Coke?” “Oh, no, thanks.” “Don’t tell me you drink those espresso thingamabobs.” “No, I drink water. It cleans out your system.” He stretched trying to get the kink out of his neck. “So you turned into a health nut.” Red smacked her hips. “Do I look like a health nut? I could stand to lose a few pounds.” “Woman, have you gone mad? When my mom sees you, she is going to try to fatten your ass up.” Red laughed. “I can’t wait to see your mom.” “Well, then, get ready. We’ll take you to breakfast and out to the ranch.” “I’d love to, Klint, but Rory...” Klint stopped her. “Kevin is out on the balcony talking to him right now.” **** Kevin had woken him up, but obviously didn’t care. “Dude, I was wondering if you loved me.” Rory, half asleep, looked at his clock. “Kev, it’s ten o’clock. What the hell do you want?” “I was wondering if you loved me.” 13
Hollie Davidson “Dude, shut the fuck up. What do you want?” “I just have to say, your little sister is a hottie. Holy shit. Klint and I decide to stay at the apartment, she came out in this T-shirt, and damn, she is fine.” “Kevin, next time I see you, I’m going to kick your ass.” “Well, by then I’ll have already married her. Can you imagine little Kevins running around?” “Kevin, I’ll beat your ass. Stay away from my little sister. Get Klint on the phone, now.” **** Klint walked out on the balcony after he heard Kevin laughing. “What are you saying to him?” Klint grabbed the phone. “What’s up?” Rory was damn near yelling in the phone. “Keep your freaky-ass big brother away from my little sister.” “Man, he ain’t messing with her. He’s just screwing with you. He likes Rani’s friend.” Kevin threw his cigarette butt off the balcony. “I could freeze ice cubes off that girl’s ass.” “Rory, I’m taking her to the ranch.” “Okay, but you watch her for me until I get there.” Kevin was listening to the conversation. “I’ll watch her for you, Rory. Watch her.” Klint punched Kevin in the side. “Shut up.” “Don’t worry, Rory, she’ll be fine with me.” “Hey, Klint.” “Yeah?” “Does she really look good?” 14
Christmas Carol
Klint took a deep breath. Damned if he did and damned if he didn’t. “Yes, Rory, little Rani grew up.” **** Diane grabbed her nose. “What in the hell is that smell?” Kevin took a deep whiff. “That, my dear, is cow shit.” The front door opened, and Opal came waddling out. “Oh, Rani.” Red ran into her arms. “I have missed you so much.” Opal had aged a little bit but she was still as beautiful as ever. “You have gotten too skinny, and your friend is too thin, too. Don’t they feed you in college?” “Opal, this is Diane.” Diane put her hand out. “It’s very nice to meet you. I have heard a lot about you.” She smacked Klint and Kevin. “Well, you big lugs get their bags and bring them in. They are going to stay with me.” “Oh, Opal, we...” Opal turned, put her hands on her hips and gave a hard stare. “You what, young lady?” Red backed down. “We would love to stay with you at the ranch.” The guys carried their bags in and sat them by the front door. “Rani, you can sleep in Klint’s old room. Diane you 15
Hollie Davidson can sleep in Kevin’s.” Red turned to Klint. “You don’t live here anymore?” “Rani--” Before he could finish, Diane interrupted. “Okay, are we all going to call her Red or Rani, because this is really starting to confuse me.” Opal and Klint answered first. “Rani.” “Okay, that is what we’ll call her now.” Klint then continued. “I built a house not too long ago down by the old lake. Kevin renovated the old farm house and lives in there.” Rani smiled. “Oh, I want to see them.” “We have plenty of time to see my house.” Kevin walked into the living room with a cookie. “Yeah, I would rather wait ‘til Rory is here before I show you my house.” Klint shook his head. Kevin was never going to change. He loved to stir up trouble; he was mischievous and loved to get under people’s skin. “You girls go get settled in and I will start making lunch.” Rani went to pick up her bag, but Klint grabbed it first. “I’ll take this for you.” The girls followed him up the stairs and to the first room on the right. He opened the door. “This is Kevin’s old room.” Diane walked in. “You got to be kidding me.” Klint sat down the suitcases. “There are always fresh towels and washcloths in the bathroom.” Rani had already gone to Klint’s room. She jumped on the bed and lay down. 16
Christmas Carol
“I always wanted to sleep in your bed.” Kevin stood in the hallway. “Well, now that you’re older, I’m sure Klint wouldn’t mind.” The look that Klint gave Kevin was enough to send him away. “Do you need anything before I go?” “Klint, do you ever see my mama anymore?” “No, Rani, I don’t. I do know she’s still drinking.” Her beautiful face turned into a frown. It was like she wanted to cry, but hid her tears from him. How could he tell her that her mom was still a drunk and a small town whore?

hen Klint got home, he took a cold shower and laid down. Before he left, he’d made sure that Kevin had gone. While he knew Kevin would never mess with Rani, he just felt more comfortable knowing he wasn’t there stirring up shit. Kevin was a good guy, but he should have been the youngest brother. It seemed Klint was always bailing him out of trouble. Kevin loved women, and he was into some freaky shit that Klint didn’t want to know about, but Kevin did love to tell about his toys. How the hell he got women to do some of the things he bragged about, Klint could only guess. Kevin had been in one serious relationship, but a Marine on leave took her away to a military life and better yet, took her out of Edom. Kevin had been devastated. ‘Til that day, Kevin had been the secure, strong always-good boy that remained faithful. After his fiancé took off, he changed. He’d calmed down some over the years and wasn’t such a slut, but he still loved the women. Klint knew that he would never touch Rani. What bothered him was the thought of Kevin touching her 18

made him jealous. He needed to get her off his mind but damn, she’d changed. The once stringy-haired, chunky little redhead was now lean, perky and round in all the right spots. Her lips were pouty, and they would look so good wrapped around... The phone rang. “Klint, it’s Rani. Look, your mom gave me your number. She wanted to know if you were going to get the tree today.” Breathe, Klint, breathe. “Yeah, I just need to get dressed and I’ll be there.” He hung up. Damn, Klint you need to stop this now. **** The sound of Harleys set Rani running down the stairs. As soon as Rory got off the motorcycle, she flew into his arms. Rory spun her around, then set her down. “Let me look at you. Shit, Klint, you said she looked good, but you didn’t tell me my little Red was a babe.” “We all agreed to call her Rani now.” Rory winked at Rani. “Well, you sure in the hell aren’t a little girl anymore. I guess I can get use to it.” Rani hugged him again. “You look so good, Rory.” He ran his hands down his chest. “That’s what the ladies say.” Rani softly punched him in the arm. “I have missed you so much.” “I missed you too, kid.” After all the introductions had been made, they all 19
Hollie Davidson sat out back to eat dinner. Opal excused herself and went to her room. Rani turned to Klint. “Rory didn’t tell me about your dad’s death till after the funeral. I would have been here.” It still hurt him, even though it had been two years. JJ had suffered a massive heart attack and died in the barn. Opal had found him. He’d been buried on the ranch near Willow’s Peak. “It’s okay, Rani.” “Your mom looks good, considering.” “She has her good days and her bad days. I’m glad you girls are going to stay with her. She needs company.” “I can only pray that someday I find a love like she has. Can you imagine being married for fifty years? Oh, my God, I can’t even find a guy who will stick around for one.” Diane laughed. “I don’t think I would want one for fifty years.” It was Kevin’s turn. He’d been quiet all night. “Don’t worry, darling, I don’t think you could find one who would stick around that long with you.” Diane flipped him off. “Ditto, Neanderthal.” Rory laughed. “It sounds like love to me.” Klint joined in with his friend. “Love? I could never love someone like him. He loves himself too much.” A coyote howled in the background. Diane scooted closer to Rani. “What was that?” Kevin howled. “It was the Wolfman. He’s looking for you. He needs young virginal blood.” 20
Christmas Carol
“Shut the hell up.” Rory pointed out towards the hills. “Coyotes live up there. Don’t worry they never come to the house. Just don’t ever go walking out near the hills alone.” Kevin grabbed his keys. “I’m out of here.” “Thank God.” He blew her a kiss. “Good night, darling.”

he mobile home looked the same as it had when Rani had left. She stood in the driveway staring at the run-down old beaten shack of a home. The memories came flooding back. All the years of going to bed scared, the fear of the unknown, never knowing if her mama was going to get drunk and die in a wreck or if someone would beat her. All she’d ever wanted was for her mother to love her. She tried so hard to get love and attention. She always kept the house clean, did laundry, cooked and she even had gotten a part time job babysitting to help pay for bills. Now, as a woman she knew her mother was an alcoholic and it was a disease, but then she couldn’t understand how anyone could hate their own kids. Over and over she would scream at Rani, telling her how Rani had ruined her life or how if she could have afforded an abortion, she would have done it. Rory stayed away. He brought dinner every night for Rani to eat, but other than that, he stayed either at Klint’s house or in town. After her dad died in a freak oilrig accident, it just got worse. The men began to come around, and as 22
Christmas Carol
Rani got older, she knew what her mom was doing in the bedroom with the men. The last straw was when the men started noticing Rani. She’d been sleeping, and didn’t even hear her door open. A hand covered her mouth and she felt someone on top of her. All she could smell was alcohol and cigarettes. She fought with all her might. He kissed her roughly, then tore off the top of her gown exposing her breasts. He sucked on one nipple as his other hand made its way to her panties. She bit his hand and he slapped her. She felt the blood trickle down her face. He stood up to take off his pants. She jumped up and ran out of the mobile home and across the road. She ran all the way through the fields in the rain to Klint’s house. She fell on the front porch, her face covered in blood, her gown torn and soaking wet. The dogs were barking, and soon the light came on. When the door opened, she covered as much of herself as she could. Opal screamed for JJ. Klint and Rory had been out in the shed working on their Harleys. Rory took one look at her and took off. Klint followed quickly behind. She never knew what happened that night at the house, but she never went back. Two weeks later, she was on her way to college and left Edom behind. Tears filled her eyes as she tried to console herself. She hated her mother. Hated her with everything she held inside. But there still was that little girl who needed to be loved so badly. She wiped her face and turned to leave. 23
Hollie Davidson “I wondered if you would ever come back.” A ghost, it was just a ghost. Walk away, Rani. But she couldn’t. She turned and came face to face with her mother. She looked old. Her red hair was still curled from the night before. She smelt of stale beer and cigarettes. Her robe was half open, exposing her naked breasts. “So, couldn’t make it out in the real world, could you, little Rani?” “I’ve done just fine for myself.” She laughed, a sick, hoarse laugh. “Oh, so you got uppity on me, like your dear old brother. I see him ride by here on his fancy Harley. Does he ever stop to help me? Hell no. He would rather help that cunt Opal.” “I’m leaving.” “You don’t fall far from the tree, little girl. Remember that. I’m your mother. Not that snooty bitch that stole you away. You are just like me.” “I am nothing like you.” She lit up a cigarette. “We’ll see, Princess. Remember me when all you become is some mattress dancer. No man will ever want you.” “Rani, let’s go.” Rani turned, tears in her eyes. Klint was standing by the road. “Let’s go.” “So, if it isn’t Klint. You know, boy you sure turned out good. Anytime you have some money to blow, come look me up.” Rani wiped her eyes. “You’re a sick whore.” Her mother exposed her breasts. “Birds of a feather flock together.” 24
Christmas Carol
Klint grabbed Rani’s hand. “Come on, I’ll take you home.” “This is her home, Klint.” “This was never my home, Mother. You were never a mother to me.” She threw her cigarette on the ground. “I never saw it ‘til now. No wonder you spent so much time at their house. You were fucking Klint. I mean, you always said you wanted to. Wow, I must give you some credit. So tell me, daughter dear, is he as good in bed as I think?” Klint pulled Rani away. “Come on.” As they walked away, she could hear her laughter. “So you think you’re better than me? Well, fuck you both. I hope you both live fucking happily ever after.” Rani kept crying. Klint stopped and put his arms around her. “Why did you go there?” “I thought maybe just maybe she had changed.” “She’s sick, Rani.” Rani wiped her eyes. “Klint, I never said I wanted...” He put his finger on her lips. “I know, Rani. You don’t have to apologize for her.” She wrapped her arms around his waist and cried. He stood still, just holding her. “What’s going on?” Klint didn’t budge as Rory walked out of the fields. “She went over there.” “Damn it, Rani, I told you she’s trash.” Rory picked up a rock and threw it across the field. “Why did you go there?” 25
Hollie Davidson “I don’t know, Rory. Maybe I was hoping she’d changed. She said I was just like her.” Klint lifted her face with his thumb. “You’re nothing like her, Rani. You’re beautiful, you’re smart, you did something with your life.” “Klint’s right, Rani. Our mother should never have been allowed to reproduce. Rani, don’t go there again. She has all kinds of trash hanging out there. Do you remember what happened last time?” Rani moved away from Klint, wiping the tears off her face. “I’m sorry. I don’t know what I was thinking. Klint, thank you for getting me out of there. I’m sorry for the things she said to you.” “Rani, you don’t have to apologize for what she said.” “What did my dear old mom say to you?” “Rory, she was horrible. She propositioned him. Then she said that Klint and I were...” “You were what?” Klint stopped Rani with a gesture. “She said that your sister and I were screwing around.” Rory cringed. “I hate her. I really hate that bitch.” Rani took her brother’s hand. “Come on, let’s get back. I can’t wait to decorate that tree.” As they walked off, she winked at Klint and whispered, “Thank you.” **** Klint sat in the gym with Kevin. “Have you ever liked someone...I mean just really liked this person but you knew it was all wrong?” 26
Christmas Carol
“Nope.” “Thanks, Kevin, you are so much help.” Kevin wiped the sweat off his forehead. “Man, what’s going on?” “Kevin, I lay down, I close my eyes and there she is. I eat dinner and my mind wanders to her.” “Well, maybe you just need to get a quick piece of ass, and then that will end it.” “It’s not about a quick piece of ass. I mean, don’t get me wrong, that has crossed my mind many times.” Klint, I think you just need to approach the girl and tell her how you feel.” “I’m not so sure I can do that.” **** The dinner was great. Opal had outdone herself yet again. Rani and Diane did the dishes as the guys carried in the tree. There were boxes everywhere, full of ornaments and lights. Kevin had brought in a ladder to put the lights up. The girls sat down and watched as strand by strand, the tree lit. Why was Klint on her mind? Rani had once been head over heels for Klint. Her mother knew it, and that was why she accused them of sleeping together. It had been a harmless crush. Klint had been much older than her, and Rory would have kicked her butt for even suggesting she thought he was hot. But it was different now. He touched her in places she never knew were there. She had wet dreams 27
Hollie Davidson about him. Imagine her, having dreams like that. She felt herself flush, thinking of some of the things she wanted him to do. She wasn’t worried about Rory. He wouldn’t freak out and throw a hissy fit if she went to him now and said, “Hey, I want Klint’s body.” Or would he? **** The lights were finally on the tree. For the next two hours they decorated the tree and the rooms, walking down memory lane as they went. Rani caught Klint staring at her every once in a while. It made her shiver it made her flush and it made her want him even more.

Chapter Six
I
t didn’t take long for Diane to get extremely bored and leave. Rani knew right from the start that Edom was not her cup of tea. Diane came up with a lie about her cousin being sick. Rani just drove her to the airport and watched her friend leave. It was a sad goodbye, because somewhere deep inside, Rani knew she would never return to California. **** Every year the church threw a big Christmas party for the country orphanage. Rani had promised Opal she would help in the big events. After countless hours of feeding children, playing games and helping with arts and crafts, she finally was able to sit down and relax. Santa Claus had arrived, so the children were excited about old Saint Nick. The jolly old fat guy walked over to the table that Rani sat at. “Excuse me, young lady, would you mind helping Santa pass out gifts?” Rani just smiled. “Sure, Santa, I’ll help you.” She put on a little elf hat and began to assist him in 29
Hollie Davidson handing out candy canes and small gifts to all the little children. A little girl with red hair and freckles walked up and sat on Santa’s lap. “Well, sweetheart, you sure have the prettiest red hair I have ever seen.” Her little toothless grin shattered Rani’s heart. “Tank you, Santa.” “Well, what would you like for Christmas? A pretty little redheaded doll?” He ran his gloved hand across her face, and she giggled. “No, Santa, I just want a mommy and daddy for Christmas. Can you get me one?” Rani moved closer to hear what they were saying. Tears already formed in her eyes. “What is your name, sweetie?” “Carol.” “Well, Carol, Santa don’t make mommies and daddies.” Her little lip quivered. “Well, Jesus took my mommy and daddy away. I asked him for another, but I guess he never heard me. I just figured you could do it.” Rani wiped the tears that fell from her eyes. That child looked like she had once. She had that sad little look in her eyes, the tremble in her voice, the frown on her face. “Carol, I will see what I can do for you, sweetie, but listen, Jesus loves you and he will always take care of you. Just be patient, okay, darling?” She kissed him on the cheek. Rani handed her a candy cane and she slowly walked off by herself. 30
Christmas Carol
Rani was surprised when Santa pulled her on his lap. “So what do you want for Christmas, little girl?” “I am hardly a little girl, Santa.” “Well, what do you want?” “I want to give that little girl a home. I want my mom to get better, to tell me she was sorry and it was all a mistake. I want to stop thinking of a certain guy, and I want my heart to stop aching for him. I want to be with him, but I know my brother would freak out.” “Why would your brother freak out?” “Because it’s his... Oh, never mind. It doesn’t matter.” Santa squeezed her hand. “Yeah, it does matter. Why would he freak out?” The doors opened, and Klint walked in with Kevin, carrying more gifts for the children. Rani sighed. Santa handed her a candy cane. “Because he’s your brother’s best friend?” “Yeah, Santa, and I just don’t care who knows anymore. I tried, I tried so hard to not like him but old feelings I felt as a teenager just came rushing back to my heart. He is such a good man, and he has such a big heart.” She started to laugh. “He probably would laugh in my face anyways, so it doesn’t matter.” “If you want something, you should go for it.” “Yeah, well, next you’ll be telling me to tell Rory how I really feel.” Santa stood up, turned away from the kids and faced Rani. “You already did, Red.” Rani stood not able to speak. Holy shit, she’d been talking to Rory the whole time. “Rory, I knew it was 31
Hollie Davidson you. I was just messing with you.” “You never could lie very well, Red.” “Are you pissed off at me?” “No, Rani, I’m not. You’re not a little girl, and I knew then that you liked him. Klint is my best friend, and nothing or nobody can or will ever change that. I don’t know how he feels. I would hope he’d tell me, but that’s not something you go and tell your best friend.” Rani hugged Rory. “Thank you for being the only sane thing I have in my life.” “Blind leading the blind.” Klint walked over to the stage as Rory sat down again. Klint sat on his lap. “Hey, Santa, I want a new car.” Rory pushed him off his lap. “The only thing you’re going to get is a size twelve up your ass if you try to sit on my lap again.” Klint got up laughing. “Hi, Rani, how are you?” “I’m fine. I have to go help your mom.” Klint sat in an empty chair next to Rory. “What’s wrong with her?” Rory told him about little Carol. “My sister was crying as that little girl talked to me. It was really sad, and dude, she looks like Rani did when she was little.” Rory looked around the room. “Rani is sitting there with her now.” Klint watched as the Rani took out a brush and began combing her hair. “Your sister has a huge heart.” “Klint, there is another problem. Well, not a problem, but I think you should know.” 32
Christmas Carol
“What’s up?” “It seems my little sister is crazy about you.” “You’re full of shit.” “Am I, Klint? If I’m so full of shit, why do you look so happy about it?” “I, um...I...” “Man, I’ve known you how many years? Klint, I know you feel the same way. I’ve seen it since she got back. Dude, I am the master at love and you, my friend, feel the same way for her.” “You gonna kick my ass?” “No, Klint, I’m not, because I trust you with her and I trust her with you. So as long as you both are cool and keep me the hell out of it, then I am fine with it. Plus, your mom would be the happiest woman in the world.” Rory walked off, leaving Klint alone, staring at Rani. **** Rani braided Carol’s hair. She was so tiny and so sweet. Rani fell instantly in love with the child. “Ms. Rani, do you have a little girl?” “No, Carol, I don’t. I don’t have any children.” “Do you want to have children?” “Well, someday I will. I have to get married first.” “Do you have a boyfriend?” Rani laughed and turned her around so they were face to face. “Why do you want to know if I have a boyfriend?” 33
Hollie Davidson “I don’t know. I was just wondering.” Rani playfully pinched her nose. “You sure ask a lot of questions.” Rani saw Opal serving desserts. “I need to go and help out that lady over there, okay?” She started to walk away. “Rani, will you come back and see me?” “Yes, Carol, I will come back to see you. I promise.” Carol wrapped her arms around Rani’s waist. “Thank you.”

ani was standing at the counter when Klint walked in the next morning. “Where’s Mom?” “Oh, she isn’t feeling so well. She has a head cold. I gave her some medicine, and she’s sleeping.” “Where are you going all dressed up?” Rani looked at her old jeans and black top. “I am not dressed up, Klint. I have to go Christmas shopping. I haven’t done any yet.” “Whatcha going to buy me?” “Nothing.” He moved closer to her. “I know you’ll buy me something, now give me a hint.” “Klint, you are worse then a kid. Honestly, I have no idea what to get you. I was going to buy Carol some toys for Christmas.” “Rani, don’t get all attached to her. She’s in an orphanage, and you know that you get too attached.” “What do you mean I get too attached?” “Rani Elissa Davis, you use to bring home every damn stray you could find. Remember the litter of kittens you found? I had to, repeat, I had to feed them damn things with a medicine dropper because your 35
Hollie Davidson dad wouldn’t let you have them. My dad said since I carried the box home for you, I was responsible for them.” Rani laughed. “I’d forgotten about that. But Klint, she is so cute and so lonely. She reminds me of...” “I know who she reminds you of, Rani, but she isn’t you, and there isn’t anything you can do in your life to change what happened to you as a kid.” “Yeah, well, that’s true, Klint but I can change the life of that little girl.” “What are you going to do? Adopt her? Rani, you’re young.” Rani slammed her fist down on the counter in anger. “I swear, if you tell me I’m a little girl and too young to think about taking her on, I will slug you. I am not a damn little girl. Klint, I can do it.” “All I was going to say is that you should meet someone, get married and have kids of your own.” “Yeah, I see that happening. The only one that I can see myself with doesn’t know I’m alive, and he probably wouldn’t give me the time of day. You know what, I don’t want to talk about this anymore. I’m going shopping.” “Well, I’m going with you.” Rani grabbed her purse. “Good, you can drive.” She followed him out the house, locking it behind her. **** Klint pulled up in front of the building. “And they are just going to let you take her?” 36
Christmas Carol
Rani unlocked the door and grabbed her ID out of her wallet. “Your mother has made arrangements with her friend. I can have her ‘til six, and then I have to bring her back. Well, she has to be back by sixfifteen at the latest.” Klint watched her go inside. He didn’t want to see her hurt. All the way to the orphanage, she talked of the little redhead. Her eyes lit up at Carol’s name. While it concerned him, it also warmed his heart to see her excitement. A few minutes later she returned, holding Carol’s hand. Rani buckled her between herself and Klint. “Carol, this is Klint.” The moment the little girl looked up at Klint and smiled, he knew why Rani loved her so. “Are you hungry, Carol?” “No, sir, I just ate breakfast.” Klint drove as Carol talked a mile a minute about what was going on at the orphanage. She had a lively spirit. She was definitely a lot like Rani when Rani was a little girl. **** After hours of shopping, and then lunch, Klint drove Carol and Rani back to the orphanage. Carol grabbed her bag and then wrapped her arms around Klint’s neck. “Bye, Klint.” Klint kissed her on the cheek. “I hope we get to see you soon.” 37
Hollie Davidson Rani walked her inside, only to return looking depressed. “I hate taking her back there. Klint, I just want to take her home with me.” “Rani, you don’t even have a home. Must I remind you that you live in California?” “I would move here in a heartbeat if I thought I had just one chance in having her, and...” “And who?” “Nothing, I meant her.” She stared silently out the window for the remainder of the way to the ranch. **** “You wanted to see my house, right?” She sat up straight. “Yeah, I do.” They pulled onto the property, and Klint drove down the old dirt road past his mom’s ranch house. As they got closer to the river, she saw his house. The sun was just beginning to set, but it was beautiful. It was a two-story home made from cedar. The upstairs had a balcony that overlooked what had to be a bedroom. It had a porch that wrapped around the whole house, with a garage and shed to its left. “Klint, this is yours?” “Yeah, Rory and I built it. I mean, Kevin and a few friends helped out, but it was mostly Rory and I.” He stopped the truck and Rani got out, staring at its beauty. “Do you want to go inside?” “Klint, I can’t believe how magnificent this is.” 38
Christmas Carol
He led her to the porch. “Did you build the swing?” “I built everything on this, baby. I wanted something of my own, but still wanted to be close enough to Mama in case she needed something. Come on, I’ll show you the inside.” Klint flipped on the hall light and she walked down the entryway. As she walked down the long hall, she noticed a den to the left. Looking inside, she was amazed at its size and style. In the middle of the room was a big screen TV with surround sound. He had stacks and stacks of DVDs on shelves next to it. He had a desk with his computer, printer and some other gadgets. In the corner was a weight bench and dumbbells. “I bet this is your favorite room.” He smiled. “Well, not really, but it’s pretty damn close.” She went farther down the hall to the living room. A fireplace stood in the corner, surrounded by black leather furniture. There was a wet bar, and French doors led outside. To the far right was the kitchen. It was just not made for a single man. All the newest brand-name appliances filled the room. He had an island in the middle with a built in grill, and hanging above it were copper pots and pans. “Klint, I love your house.” He opened the French doors, and she followed him outside. He had a swimming pool, hot tub and even a sauna room. “My God, I bet you have some parties 39
Hollie Davidson here.” “No, I don’t. It would be the perfect bachelor pad, but I have too much respect for my stuff. I’m anal that way. If something breaks of mine, I am going to kick someone’s ass. Besides, Rani, I’m all partied out.” “Can I see upstairs?” The stairs were a bit spiraled, and hand carved. Rani walked slowly up the steps, admiring the craftsmanship. “How long did this take you to do?” “It took us four years. Oh, we talked about all the parties we were going to have, but as soon as it was done we were afraid someone would screw something up, so there weren’t any parties here.” “Yeah, like you didn’t have your hoards of women here.” As they got to the top of the steps, he softly touched her hand. “Nobody has been in this house. Your brother’s apartment was the shag pad.” “Oh, thanks for telling me.” “Well, you asked.” “Actually I could have gone all day without knowing my brother’s apartment was some cathouse.” “I did a lot of stupid things when I was younger, Rani. A lot of stupid things.” He opened a door and she walked in a head of him. Chills crept over her body. It was his bedroom. It was huge, with a four-poster bed made out of rosewood. She knew from the markings that he’d made that too. Matching dressers and nightstands stood in various positions around the room, but the thing that caught her eye was the hot tub. He had a 40
Christmas Carol
hot tub in his damn room. Her heart started racing. His room was so damn erotic that she suddenly couldn’t breathe. Rani opened the French doors that led out to the balcony. She took a deep breath, trying to cool her thoughts. “What’s wrong?” “Oh, I’m just tired. It’s been a long day.” “I wanted to make you dinner, but if you want me to take you back to Mom’s, I will.” Have him take you back. You are safe if you go back. Rani, go back, go back. “I am hungry.” “Good, come on. I will get you a glass of wine to help you relax while I put some steaks on the grill.” Out on the back patio, Rani stared at the hot tub. “That water looks heavenly.” “I can give you a T-shirt to wear, and you can jump in.” Just do it Rani, he doesn’t care about you. You’re being stupid. Rani jumped up. “Sure. Where are they?” “Up in my dresser, the one closest to my bed on the left. Just grab a shirt, I don’t care which one.” Rani ran up the stairs and into his room. She felt the soft silk comforter that covered his bed. Oh, it would feel divine on her skin. She quickly shook her head and went to his dresser to find a shirt. She grabbed a gray shirt and put it on over her panties. She felt a little weird walking downstairs with what she had on, but she did. Klint was standing 41
Hollie Davidson by the grill drinking a beer. He stopped when she walked out and handed her a beer. “Jump in, Rani.” Rani inched her way into the water. It was so warm. She leaned back and shut her eyes. A cold beer, hot water shooting all over her body and being with Klint. Yeah she was in heaven. **** Klint put some salad on the plates beside the baked potatoes. He didn’t care about eating. All he wanted to do was join her in the hot tub. His shirt stuck to her breasts, outlining pure ecstasy. He wanted to touch her more then anything. Taking a deep, long breath, he went back outside and put the plates down on the table. “If you get out of there, you’re going to freeze.” Rani opened her eyes. “Well, then, let’s eat in here.” “I don’t know, Rani.” She began to laugh. “Aw, is the big bad Klint afraid of getting cold?” She was teasing him. Yeah, it was in an innocent way, but if she only knew how badly he wanted her. “Let’s eat inside.” “You said if I get out, I would freeze.” “Fine, Rani, we’ll eat in there.” He handed her a plate, then disappeared in the house. When he returned, he wore only his trunks with no shirt. **** 42
Christmas Carol
The wind began to pick up, sending cold chills up her spine. They had finished eating and were relaxing. “Klint, I’m freezing.” Klint reached behind him to a chair and grabbed a towel. “Get up quick, wrap this around you and run in.” She ran into the laundry room and stripped off her clothes, covering herself only with the towel. Klint was standing in the kitchen with a towel wrapped around his waist. “Do you want me to start a fire?” “No, I’m okay.” “You better go and get dressed so you don’t freeze to death.” Rani slowly walked upstairs to change. In his room, she put on another of Klint’s shirts. The bed looked so inviting. She just wanted to know how it felt. First, though, she went in and found his blow dryer. She couldn’t get his pillows all wet. After her hair was dry, she crawled up and lay down. **** Klint walked in and found her lying in his bed. Yeah, it was just where he wanted her. He grabbed some dry clothes and changed into them. When he sat on the side of his bed, she jumped up. “I’m sorry, Klint. I...” “Rani, it’s okay. It’s not like we haven’t slept in the same bed before. You use to always come in my room.” 43
Hollie Davidson “Yeah, well, it was a lot different, Klint.” “How so?” “We were kids. I mean… I was a kid. Well, we were younger, and it was different.” “What was so different, Rani?” She was getting flustered he could see it. All he wanted was for her to tell him how she felt. It was all he needed. “Klint, I use to come in your room because I was scared and I was lonely. Rory was always out with some girl, and you were always there. I felt safe with you.” “Oh, so now you don’t feel safe with me?” “I do, but it’s different?” “Damn it, Rani, how is it different?” She started to jump off the bed. He pulled her back. “Rani, just tell me.” “I can’t. I’m scared.” “What in the hell are you so afraid of?” She was on the verge, he could tell. She kept looking away, staring at nothing. He had to make her tell him. “What are you so scared of, Rani?” “I’m scared of a lot of things. I’m scared that Carol will get snatched up before I can try to get her. I’m scared that I will end up like my mom. I’m scared because I have to find a house, and I’m still afraid to live by myself. I’m scared that something will happen to Rory and I’ll be alone, but more then anything, I’m scared that I will never be able to tell you all the things I want so badly for you know.” “What, Rani? What do you want me to know?” 44
Christmas Carol
Her eyes filled with tears. She started to look away again, but he placed his hand on the side of her face, forcing her to look at him. “Tell me.” “I think I love you.” He softly kissed her lips. Slowly and sensually, he kissed her again. Once she wrapped her arms around his neck, he lost all control. It was as if he’d waited a hundred years. Laying her down, he kissed her neck, then back to her lips. His tongue entwined with hers. He couldn’t get enough of her touch. Her skin was so soft, so cool, yet so hot from the passion that arose from inside. “Rani, tell me to go.” “I can’t.” She sat up, removing his T-shirt. “I’ve wanted you too long.” Klint got up and turned off the lights in the room. He covered her body like an oversized blanket, causing more heat than either knew how to handle. He was rock hard, yet he wanted to explore every part of her body. Her breasts tasted like honey as he sucked on her swollen nipples. Her body arched for more, her moans causing him to lose control. Klint removed her panties and buried his head between her legs. Her body tensed, telling him she’d never experienced a climax like he was about to give her. Her head turned from side to side. She pulled at his hair as the tip of his tongue lapped her distended clit. She was on fire. Klint parted her legs yet again as he slid inside her. She was hot, tight and mighty wet. 45
Hollie Davidson Slowly, oh, so slowly, he elevated himself above her, going inside her completely. A slight wail soon disappeared in cries of joy. She wrapped her legs around him, pushing up, taking all of him in. Klint kissed her, smothering her sounds as she began to orgasm. His own exhilaration made him forget her cries as his own body tensed and released all he had inside her. As he lay there trying to catch his breath, she made her way to the restroom. She returned, still naked, and lay next to him. “Was that a mistake?” Klint pulled her in his arms. “No, mistakes only happen once, and my dear, we will be doing that again.” She fell asleep in his arms. **** The next morning, Klint was downstairs fixing breakfast when Rory came waltzing in. Rory saw two plates and stopped in his tracks. “I shouldn’t be here, should I?” “Well, Rory, it depends on how well you can accept how it’s going to be.” “Is she here?” “Yeah, Rory, she is.” Klint could tell Rory was thinking; he took a deep breath. He didn’t know what to expect from Rory. Sure, he’d given them his permission, but still, it had to be weird. “So, Klint, do I get some breakfast, or do I have to 46
Christmas Carol
sleep with you first?” Klint handed Rory a plate. “Um, you can eat, dude. I will make her another one.” Rory laughed and grabbed the plate. “Good, I would have had to been on top. I’m naturally in control.” “You’re a sick fucker, is what you are.” Rory took a Coke from the fridge, sat down, and began to eat. A few minutes later, Rani came down still in Klint’s T-shirt. As soon as she saw Rory, she tensed up. Rory continued eating. Rani turned to go back upstairs. “I told you I didn’t care, Rani, but I would appreciate if you put some clothes on. I’m trying to eat, and that’s pretty nasty.” Klint joined his friend at the breakfast nook. “There is nothing nasty about that.” Rory covered his ears. “I can’t hear you.” Rani went upstairs and changed into her clothes, then joined them downstairs to eat.

hings were great. Opal had been tickled when she found out that Klint and Rani was a couple. Klint got himself back into his work, while Rani began to make his home her own. Yeah it seemed like her world was spinning rapidly but in her heart she had always loved Klint. She seemed happy, and he loved coming home to her. She’d found a job at a large advertising agency and things were going good, but he could still see something was missing, and he knew exactly what it was. **** It was only a few days before Christmas. He’d gotten all his shopping done and had taken off work until after the New Year. He wanted to spend more time with Rani. When he got home, he called out for Rani. The house was dark, and he couldn’t find her. Finally he found her out on the back patio. He walked up behind her, putting his arms around her. He then 48

noticed her crying. Turning around, he leaned down to look her in the eye. “Honey, what’s wrong?” Her sobs broke his heart. She couldn’t even talk, she was crying too hard. “Rani, what is wrong?” “It’s Carol. I went to talk to the orphanage about bringing her here for Christmas. I can’t bring her here, Klint.” Klint put his hands in hers. “Rani, I know you can’t adopt her. Let me explain.” “Klint, she’s gone.” He smiled. “You don’t understand, Rani. I talked to a lawyer, and I’m drawing up paperwork.” Rani hugged his neck tight. “Klint, she died this morning.” Klint softly pushed her away. “What are you talking about?” Rani wiped tears from her face. “She got bacterial meningitis. The attendants thought she had the flu, so they took her in. It was too late. She died this morning.” Klint was in shock. He had done everything he could to get that little girl for Rani. He had planned on bringing her home Christmas Eve. He’d already gotten the go-ahead. How could she be gone? “Rani, I am sorry. I tried to get her.” “I know, Miss Orlander told me. She told me how Carol was so excited because she was coming home for Christmas. Klint, she didn’t know any different, she died in her sleep. She just didn’t wake up. Fever 49
Hollie Davidson ravaged her poor little body. Klint took Rani in his arms. “I tried, I’m sorry.” Rani kissed him on the cheek. “You know, I told you that I thought I loved you. Well, I know now that I do.” **** Carol was buried on Christmas Eve. Only five people were at her funeral, but the two that mattered had placed a concrete angel on her grave with these simple words: Our Christmas Carol has finally found a home.
