Так уж заведено, что в предисло вии к книге ее автор или переводчик
должен постараться объяснить чита
телю, какие причины побудили его взяться за перо. В отличие от мно жества экзотичных стран и людей, их населяющих, монахи египетских пус тынь уже давно и прочно заняли свое
место в сознании христианских наро
дов Восточной Европы, частью кото рой является и Россия. Их духовные наставления и житийные рассказы о них,
которые
лись
и
старательно
переписывались
книжниками,
составили
переводи
славянскими часть
духов
ного наследия древней Руси: их муд рые советы мы можем прочесть в Пате риках, а их святые лики глядят на нас с
древних икон и фресок Их аскетичес кие подвиги вдохновляли целые поко ления русских иноков.
Однако мы вправе задаться вопро сом:
насколько
хорошо
знали
наши
предки географические реалии Египта и повседневный быт великих египет ских отцов? Не представлялось ли им, что
жизнь
первых
монахов
проте
кала на просторах, сравнимых с ланд
шафтом среднерусской полосы? Или,
наоборот, не казалась ли она столь сказочной, что
мысленно уводила в
мифологическое пространство, дале
кое от какой бы то ни бьmо повсед невной реальности? При ведем один интересный пример. В свой «Собор ник» переводов греческих житий пре
подобный
Нил

включил,
помимо прочего, Житие извесгного египетского под
вижника
преподобного
Онуфрия
Великого.
Автор
этого Жития, Пафнутий, просит братию, записавшую его слова, поведать о подвигах великого отшельника
«по скитам·). Но в коптском тексге

века речь идет
совсем об ином: Пафнутий просит монахов отнести Житие в Скит и положить его в церковь одного из монастырей. Таким образом, конкретный египет ский топоним - Скит (современное название «Вади Натрун') ) - бьm понят древнерусским книжником в более известном ему смысле, в смысле небольшого иноческого поселения, поскольку к тому времени это
слово уже стало нарицательным
...
А вот более близкий к нам по времени отрывок: «Эта пусгыня драгоценная для хрисгиан; в первые века Цер
кви в ней укрывалось бесчисленное множество отшель ников, и она прославилась именами блаженных Павла, Мелании, Аммона, Ефрема, Моисея Араба, Аполлона, Серапиона, Памбона, Пимена, Иоанна, Даниила, Мака рия и многих других'>. эти восгорженные строки при надлежат перу известного русского путешесгвенника

века Авраама Сергеевича Норова. Будучи в Египте,
он не преминул посетить месга, связанные с христиан
ской историей этой страны. Далее по тексту идет опи сание монастырей, осгавляющее мало сомнений в том, что русский путешественник находился в районе все
того же Скита, но аввы, им перечисленные, подвизались не только в Скиту, но и в других местах Нижнего или даже Среднего Египта ... Таким образом, мы видим обоб щенную картину, некий собирательный образ древней монашеской пустыни. Не сгавя под сомнение ценность заметок нашего соотечесгвенника, давайте все же зададимся вопросом: всегда ли хорошо, когда конкретная реальносгь заменя
ется неким обобщенным сакральным пространством? На наш взгляд, далеко не всегда, ибо есть опасность того, что место исторической достоверносги прочно
займет «благочестивый'> муляж. В конце концов, каждый решает эту проблему по-своему. Но многочисленные вопросы друзей и знакомых, где можно найти книгу, в
которой бы доступным языком, но в то же время с уче-

том последних научных изысканий рассказывалось бы о жизни египетских монахов первых веков, ставили нас
в тупик: практически ничего, кроме переизданий давно устаревших трудов позапрошлого века, мы им предло
жить не могли. В то же время за последнее столетие на Западе была проделана поистине огромная работа по критическому изучению древних текстов, проведены
масштабные раскопки, найдено и исследовано много документальных источников. Все это помогло деталь нее представить жизнь первых монахов и
их после
дователей, а иногда и изменило прежде существовав шие представления. Однако слово «помогло» следует отнести лишь к западному читателю или человеку, в
достаточной степени владеющему западноевропейс
кими языками. Все это, увы, в большей своей части остается за пределами сознания современного россий ского читателя. А учитывая то влияние, которое оказала мудрость египетских отцов-пустынников на духовное
развитие Руси и России, такая ситуация кажется очень
странной. Тем не менее это так.
Данное издание представляет собой попытку как-то исправить сложившуюся ситуацию. Подумав о том, что
не стоит в очередной раз (iизобретать велосипед», мы
решили сделать перевод замечательной книги бене диктинского монаха отца Люсьена Реньё, посвятив шего не один десяток лет своей жизни переводу и изу чению самых ранних монашеских текстов и хорошо знавшего современную ему жизнь коптских монасты
рей. Тем более что его книга, достаточно высоко оце ненная специалистами, учитывает не только письмен
ные источники, но данные археологии и современный
этнографический материал. Мы смеем надеяться, что по ее прочтении читатель отчетливее и реальнее пред
ставит себе повседневную жизнь тех людей, духовная мудрость которых поражала не только их современ
ников, но и многие последующие поколения. Ведь их - от самых
жизнь во всем ее сложном многообразии
простых вещей до самых тяжелых молитвенных под

В русском переводе книги мы постарались отком ментировать некоторые персоналии и названия, кото
рые, возможно, не известны широкому читателю. Боль
шинство же из упомянутых отцом Люсьеном имен

например Анатоль Франс, Антуан де Сент-Экзюпери,
Андрей Тарковский - в дополнительных коммента риях не нуждаются. Иероним и Августин в соответс твии с распространенной в России культурной нормой, идущей от православной традиции, стали на страни
цах нашего перевода блаженными, хотя для отца Люсь ена они конечно же были святыми. Мы сверили цитаты из источников на латыни и греческом в тех случаях,
когда нам были доступны оригиналы. В тех случаях,
где мы имели только русские переводы и французс кий текст, которые разнились между собой, мы отда вали предпочтение французскому тексту, поскольку, как показала наша работа с оригиналами, в ряде мест русские переводы (по большей части дореволюцион ные) далеко уходят от текста источника. При ссылках на разные редакции апофтегм отец Люсьен пользу
ется своей нумерацией (отличной от общераспростра ненной), которая напрямую связана с его переводами
различных сборников этого памятника. В большинс тве случаев нам удалось найти эти апофтегмы и дать ссылку на их русские переводы.

правитель
одной
из
областей Египта отправился в пустыню Скита, чтобы увидеть авву Моисея, быв
шего предводителя разбойников, став шего одним из самых известных под
вижников. Приблизившись вместе со свитой к Скиту, он встретил на пути милого
старика,
которого
правитель
попросил показать, как ему пройти к келье великого отшельника. «.А что вы
хотите от него?

ответил старец.
-
Он же глупец и еретик». Правитель тем не менее продолжил свой путь и при шел в церковь, где узнал, что встретив
шийся ему на дороге старец и был тем самым аввой Моисеем!. Как мы видим, не так-то легко распоз нать Отцов пустын·. и начать с ними
разговор. Более сорока лет назад, будучи еще молодым монахом, с воодушевле
нием и неосмотрительностью я открьm
для себя этих странных и таинствен ных людей. Но, к счастью, мне удалось
найти себе великолепного наставника, которым оказался отец Ириней Осер. По совету этого выдающегося историка восгочнохристианской духовной тра диции я в разных местах стал изучать
изречения Ощов и собирать их все, так же, как коллекционируют редкие марки
или драгоценности. Ибо эти жемчу жины, пришедшие к нам из Египта, ока-

зались рассеяны в многочисленных рукописных сбор никах или изданиях на греческом, коптском, латинском,
сирийском, арабском, армянском, грузинском и даже славянском языках. Сквозь это собрание, насчитываю щее около трех тысяч рассказов, неторопливо собран ных и переведенных мной на французский, подобно пазлам, постепенно открывающим нам задуманную кар
тину, передо мной наконец во всей своей цельности и
бесконечном разнообразии зримо предстал мир Отцов пустыни. Двухлетнее пребывание в Египте и контакты с современными коптскими монахами позволили мне лучше понять
многие тонкости
предшественников
и
аспектыI жизни
их
IV века. Именно эту картину я попы
тался восстановить на страницах данной книги и пред ставить ее на суд читателя.
Читатель, который знаком с Отцами пустыни только по произведениям Флобера, Анатоля Франса или дру гих писателей Нового времени, возможно, будет удив лен тем, что откроет их для себя немного по-новому. На самом деле, нет какого-то одного «типаi> Отца-пус
тынника. Каждый из них - это особая личность, ибо для того, чтобы навечно отправиться в безжизненную пустыню, нужно было иметь немалое мужество. Однако довольно быстро условия уединенной жизни вырабо тали свои обычаи и традиции, которые и стали регули ровать этот столь необычный образ жизни. Я попыта юсь показать эти константы, сохранив

индивидуальные черты каждого из дейс
твующих лиц.
Наконец, чтобы окончательно установить контуры нашей картины, я должен уточнить, что я понимаю под выражением «Отцы пустыни». Я понимаю его не в том
широком смысле, который в него повсеместно вклады вают, но в том узком значении, в каком его понимали
изначально 2 • В конце
IV века так именовали самых зна
менитых отшельников, которые, ПОКИНУВ плодородные
и населенные районы Нильской долины, ушли вглубь пустыни. Очень скоро некоторые из них благодаря своей святости стали особенно заметны и начали при тягивать к себе множество учеников и подражателей, которые,
селившись
по
соседству,

рассматривали
их
как своих «отцов». До этого времени христиане, в том числе аскеты и монахи, признавали «отцами» исклю
чительно епископов. «Епископы

рые наставляют нас по Писаниям»,

Великий. Но постепенно в сообществах пустынни ков, удаленных от общин верующих мирян, во15.
Это наставление, полученное от ангела, Антоний затем передал своим ученикам, и оно распространи
лось по всей пустыне настолько широко, что какой
нибудь посетитель или паломник, внезапно пришед ший к отшельнику, имел все шансы застать его сидящим за плетением веревки или стоящим на молитве. Это

основа жизни пустынника. И если указания на подоб ную практику не всегда встречаются в апофтегмах, то только потому, что она стала почти что правилом. И
когда об одном брате бьmо сказано, что он «не оставлял своего рукоделья и постоянно возводил молитву свою
к Богу», то это похвальное исключение, ибо этот монах
был «весьма смирен и стоек в своем СОСТОЯНИИ>,> 16. А вот другое исключение: авва Бане никогда не садился, он
работал и ел стоя, и поэтому никогда не вставал на молитву 17.
Возможно, когда Антонию бьmо видение, он плел веревку и молился. Ангел научил его время от времени прерывать свою работу и молиться. Изменение поло жения тела связывалось с изменением занятия, разры
вающего монотонность пребывания в келье и застав ляющего монаха постоянно оставаться бодрым - и духовно, и телесно.
МонашеC1CUе труды в келье Как кажется, ремесло корзинщика бьmо освоено монахами довольно рано, поскольку идеально подхо
дило для отшельника, сидящего в своей келье. Именно этим ремеслом овладел Пахомий, когда подвизался подле своего учителя аввы Паламона 18 . В скитской пус-

тыне, возле болота, можно бьmо без труда найти камыш, тростник и пальмовые ветви 19. Можно было сходить и срезать их, сколько нужно, принести в келью и высу
шить. За кучей таких заготовок спрятался один из уче
ников аввы Моисея и тем самым избежал смерти во
время кровавого набега варваров на Скит 2О . Сначала пальмовые ветви освобождали от листьев, а затем зама чивали в воде, чтобы придать им гибкость. Затем с помощью ножа их расщепляли, и из того, что получа
лось, делали длинные веревки либо на продажу, либо для того, чтобы использовать при изготовлении кор
зин и циновок Также из них можно бьmо делать под пруги для тягловых животных. Когда в пустыню прихо дил новичок, старец учил его навыкам такого ремесла 21 .
Каждый монах более или менее сносно, в зависимости от своей сноровки, умел плести и шить. Однажды ночью авва Ахил сплел веревку длиной в 20 локтей, что составляет около 80 метров 22 . Павел Простой до трех часов дня сплел
15 локтей, однако, испытывая его сми
рение, Антоний расплел эти веревки, и Павел, так и не
поев, опять принялся за дел0 23 . Во время визита аввы Макария к Антонию оба плели веревки всю ночь. Мака рий перебрасывал готовую веревку через окно и спус кал ее в пещеру. Антоний, подивившись ее длине, изрек: ~Великая сила исходит из рук этих»24.
В том случае, если веревка бьmа предназначена для изготовления корзины, сначала рассчитывали необхо димую длину. Конец веревки крепили к стене. Однажды авва Иоанн Колов, поглощенный созерцанием, сплел одну корзину из той веревки,
которую приготовил
для двух, и только приблизившись К стене, он заметил эт0 25 . Авва Мегефий изготовлял в день по три корзины, столько, сколько нужно бьmо, чтобы заработать на еду26. Работа по плетению корзин была почти машиналь ной и освобождала ум для молитвы. Монах мог плести что-то даже ночью, в темноте. Авва Дорофей, который проводил весь день, собирая камни для строительства
келий, по ночам плел веревки 27 . Если монах во время шитья позволял себе выронить иглу, мог вмешаться бес и ~наполнитЬ» келью светом, таким, какой, например, он сотворил надменному монаху Валенту28.

Изготовление циновок из тростника было более тяжелой работой. Можно бьmо легко поцарапать руки 29 . Чтобы сделать одну циновку, авва Макарий потратил три дня 3О . Некоторые отшельники плели лен, например в Нитрии 31 или В других местах 32 . Как кажется, сырье для работы могло быть различным, в зависимости от
времени года. Одна апофтегма говорит нам, что некий старец «не делал ничего в свое время: в сезон сетей он
делал паклю, а когда все плели нити, он ткал лен, чтобы
дух его не бьm занят работоЙ»33. Но другой старец счи тал, что ткать лен монаху не пристало, ибо, продавая хорошую ткань, он рискует пристраститься к деньгам, ведь «если видят, что кто-то принес корзины, циновки
или решето, то говорят: "Это монах", но если видят, что кто-то продает хорошую льняную одежду; то говорят:
"Смотри-ка, - торговец!"»34. Подобная критика только подтверждает, что монахов, которые ткали лен, бьmо не так уж мало, и, касаясь рукой веретена, они тем не
менее могли иметь душеполезные мысли. Один из них говорил: «Я роняю веретено и перед тем, как поднять
его, вижу смерть перед своими очами»3S. Другой ему
вторит: «Я живу уже долгое время, забросив веретено, и спрашиваю себя, доживу ли я до того времени, когда вновь возьму его, думая о смерти»36. Приведем также слова аввы Агафона: «Я не позволяю ни одной худой мысли войти в сердце мое, когда тяну веретено наверх изямы»37.
Изготовление сетей для рыбы и силков для дичи также входило в круг монашеских занятий. Авва Ахил, например, занимался этим, хотя мы знаем, что он также
плел веревки, по крайней мере по ночам 38 . Некото рые монахи изготовляли папирус, но это бьmо более сложным занятием39. Упоминается и другое книжное ремесло - каллиграфия. Особенно даровитым в этом деле был ЕвагриЙ 4О . Мы знаем имена еще двух каллигра фов, живших в Скиту: Марка, ученика аввы Сильвана, и Пафнутия 41 . Но тот старец, который не советовал мона хам ткать лен, книг,

поскольку это занятие приводит к гордыне»42. Однако не таков был один синайский пустынник, который

получил заказ на пере писку книг, но умер, так никому
ничего не написав, ибо проводил все свои дни в слезах и размышлении о смерти 43 . В Скиту один старец, пере писывая книги, иногда впадал в экстаз и ему случалось «перескакивать через строчки и опускать знаки препи
нания». Своему заказчику, который заметил эти про пуски, он сказал: «Иди, И сперва прочти, что написано, а
затем возвращайся, и я перепишу тебе все остальное»44.
Размышление над словам Божuuм Каковы бы ни бьmи занятия монахов в пустыне,
главным было не прилепляться к ним душой и хра нить разум свой для вещей духовных. Именно поэтому,
по словам аввы Сисоя, монаху не стоит выбирать тот труд, который ему нравится45 . Даже в плетении можно найти что-то привлекательное. Физический труд мог
быть довольно тяжел, но нельзя было допускать, чтобы он стал основным занятием монаха, заслонив собой главное - работу Богу46. Этой опасности следовало всячески избегать, и именно таков смысл высказыва ния одного аввы: «Любовь к рукоделью шение души, а смиренное занятие

отдых в Боге»47.
Вот почему Отцы пустыни так настаивали на соедине нии физического труда и чтения наизусть текстов, как правило, заимствованных из Священного Писания. Это
могла быть одна строчка, повторяемая многократно, или длинные пассажи, ибо большая часть монахов знала наизусть многие места из Библии. Авва Даниил бьm спо собен повторять наизусть до 1О тысяч строк в день 48 . Авва Лукий, плетя веревку, постоянно повторял начало 50-го псалма: (,помилуй меня Боже по великой милости Твоей, и по множеству щедрот Твоих изгладь беззако
ния мои»49. Павлу Великому было достаточно началь ных строк: «Помилуй меня»50. Авва Исаак особо совето
вал Иоанну Кассиану читать строчку из 69-го псалма: «Поспеши, Боже, избавить меня, поспеши, Господи, на помощь мне»51.
Работа
каллиграфа
не
препятствовала
подобной
практике. Авва Исидор Несарийский, занимаясь пись-

мом, часто поднимал глаза и повторял в своем сердце
с сомкнугыми устами: «Иисусе, помилуй меня, помоги
мне, хвалю тебя, Господь мой,)52. Сидя уединенно в своей келье, отшельник мог читать наизусть громким голосом, и посетитель, приближаясь к келье, слышал его голос. Авва Макарий Великий, например, услышал, как
один брат плачет, говоря: «Господи, если Ты не имеешь ушей, чтобы слышать, как я взываю к Тебе, прости мне грехи мои, ибо не устану я призывать Тебя»53. Ученики аввы Арсения слышали, как их учитель взывал к Богу: «Боже, не оставляй меня. Я не сделал ничего доброго перед Тобою, но по милости Твоей позволь мне поло жить начало,)54. Авва Амой, придя к авве Ахилу, слышал, как тот повторял многократно строку из книги Бытия:
«Не бойся, Иаков, идти в Египет» (Быт.
46, 3)55.
Когда у
монаха были посетители, то читать на память следо вало про себя, как делал это, например, авва Исидор. Авва Зинон, Феодор Фермейский и два юных ученика
ав вы Макария поступали так же 56 . Авва Исайя говорит об одном монахе в келье, который «совершал службу Богу в тишине,)57.
Чтенuе Было ли в долгом дне отшельника место для чте
ния? У монахов-пахомиан для чтения были отведены определенные
часы,
но
нет
никаких
свидетельств,
подтверждающих, что то же самое было и у пустын ников. Впрочем, мы находим одну апофтегму, кото рая дает точное расписание занятий монаха в Кел
лиях: он работал все утро до полудня, затем, с 12 до 15 часов, читал и расщеплял пальмовые ветви 58. В армян ском переводе этой апофтегмы указано, что три полу
денных часа были посвящены
исключительно чте
нию Священного Писания, но в сирийской версии
такое чтение не упомянуто59. В другом месте, сохра нившемся
в латинском
переводе,
перечислены
заня
тия Иоанна Колова после его возвращения с жатвы
-
среди них есть и чтение, но упоминание о нем отсутс
твует в греческом тексте6О • Следует сказать, что чтение

никогда не упоминается при перечислении обычных занятий отшельника. Мы уже знаем, что в кельях Отцов пустыни бьmо мало книг. Но иногда апофтегмы все же говорят о чтении монаха в келье. Один брат, например,
находясь подле больного аввы Агафона, громко читал
вслух книгу Бытия61 . Авва Амон из Раифы читал Писа ние, авва Сисой - Новый 3авет62 • Один брат, искуша емый желанием покинугь келью, сказал себе: (сПойду, почитаю немного ... ,)63 Рассказывают таюке об одном старце, келья которого светилась чудесным образом:
он читал и работал там не только днем, но и ночью64 • А тот брат из Келлий, который предавался чтению день и ночь, в конце концов продал все свои книги и ушел
дальше в пустыню65 . Все эти свидетельства позволяют предположить, что довольно много монахов читали, сидя в своих кельях,
особенно в Келлиях, но в то же время это не бьmо обязательной и общераспространенной практикой. Евагрий и Иоанн Кассиан должны бьmи бы рекомен довать монахам чтение, однако оба этих образованных монаха подчеркивают его второстепенное значение и
относительную ценность66• Авва Нестерой призывает Иоанна Кассиана учить Писание наизусть, но при этом добавляет, что учат его не столько при помощи чте ния, сколько путем «тяжелого опыта~67. Среди девяти апофтегм, цитируемых Евагрием в конце своего трак тата «Монах,), две показывают, что можно бьmо очень
хорошо обходиться и без чтения68 • Так, Серапион про дал Евангелие, чтобы накормить голодных. Один фило соф спросил Антония Великого: «Как выдерживаешь ты, Отче, лишенный утешения от книг?,) Антоний на это ответил: (сМоя книга, философ, есть природа, и она всегда под рукой, когда я хочу прочитать слова Божии~. Из его Жития мы знаем, что Антоний всегда очень внимательно слушал чтения из Писания, произноси
мые в Церкви, и «не позволял себе ничего пропускать, а память заменяла ему книги,)69. Отшельники пустыни могли точно так же удерживать в своем сердце те слова
Писания, что слышали во время литургии по субботам и воскресеньям. Божественные глаголы питали и под держивали их всю неделю: отшельники приводили их

Молитва сгановится явной и более интенсивной, когда монах откладывает свою работу и встает, часго - он поднимает к небу руки, а затем преклоняет колени, просгираясь на земле. Частота такой молитвы могла
зависеть от индивидуальных особенностей инока и внешних обсгоятельств, по духовному усмотре нию каждого или согласно принятому правилу совер

лечь его в грех. И только его душевный мир сохра нял такую опасность. Поэтому внутренняя, душевная
работа бьmа для него чрезвычайно важной.
Отцы пустыни конечно же не пренебрегали иссле дованием своего ума в определенные моменты, утром
и вечером 21 , или в определенных обстоятельствах, например, перед тем как выйти из кельи или прежде чем туда воЙти 22 . Но в большей степени они говорили о постоянном бодрствовании, к которому принуждали себя и в келье, и за ее пределами. Отшельник жил пос тоянно настороже, постоянно во «внимании К самому
себе·)23, согласно известному выражению стоиков, кото рое у христиан приобрело смысл, отличный от того,
что был у языческих учителей морали 24 . Монах бодрс твует, чтобы не прогневить Бога, стараясь «сохранить всегда Господа перед очами своими·)25. Это - внутрен нее чувство ~CTpaxa Божия» в библейском смысле слова, которое не исключает любовь к Богу, но прежде всего выражает убеждение в возможности жить, постоянно находясь перед очами Божиими. Утвердив себя в страхе Божием, отшельник внима
тельно наблюдал за всеми помыслами, которые неиз бежно появляются в его уме. Авва Исидор замечал: ~Если мы не будем иметь мыслей, то станем подобны диким зверям.)28. ему откроются. 32 • Обычно, с помощью страха Божия и бодрствования, монах обретал благодать различе ния 3 3, но чаще всего это происходило после длитель ного обучения под руководством старца, которому он ЭТИ помыслы открывал.
Отсечение лукавых nамыслов Как только помысел признан суетным или лука вым, следует сразу же отсечь его, не пускаясь с ним
в переговоры. Но если он угвердился в нас, то уже
невозможно прогнать его сразу34. Лукавые помыслы

как мыши, проникающие в дом: если их уничтожать
одну за другой, по мере того как они там поселя
ются, можно быстро избавиться от неприятностей. Но если они там размножились, нужно сильно потру
диться, чтобы полностью избавиться от них 35 . Однако отдельные помыслы, например помысел сластолюбия, MOгyr долго мучить монаха, иногда до девяти лет или
даже больше 36• Обычно различные помыслы следуют друг за другом и постоянно нужно обращать внимание на то, чтобы не впустить ни одного лукавого. Ошибка длиной в одно мгновение может стать фатальной. Некоторые отцы, слова которых приводят Евагрий и Иоанн Кассиан, советовали опытным ученикам впус

заться и постоянно побуждать себя к духовной брани, все способы были хороши. Один из них нашел очень изобретательный метод. Он собирал перед собой кучу камней и две корзинки, одну

Однако она свидетель ствует о том особом внимании, которое проявляли к себе отшельники, стараясь сохранить свое сердце в чистоте. Святой Антоний советовал своим ученикам письменно

и говорил им: «Будем уверены, что, стыдясь извесг
ности, в значительной степени освободимся от худых помыслов»41. Брат, который собирал камни в корзины, возможно, не мог ни читать, ни писать, поэтому он и
изобрел свой «оригинальный метод». Любая мелочь в поступках бьmа очень важной, поскольку Отцы доби вались абсолютной чисготы сердца, чтобы посвятить его одному
только Богу. Не все имели одинаковые
душевные силы, и некоторые считали для себя необхо димым придумать довольно странные уловки. Иногда могло показаться, что они тратят всю свою энергию
на борьбу с лукавыми помыслами, но на самом деле они старались сохранить помыслы добрые. О худых и лукавых помыслах мы знаем намного больше, но это

добрых же они всегда говорили более сдержанно. Вот, например, что сказал авва Пимен: ~Пока котелок на
огне, муха туда не сядет. Также и монах, если он пре бывает в духовном делании, то враг его, дьявол, никак не может поразить его»42. Согласно другому сравне нию, приведенному аввой Моисеем Иоанну Кассиану,
душа подобна мельничному жернову, который всегда в движении. Нужно постоянно наполнять его зерном,
иначе он будет молоть плевелы 43 . Именно поэтому так необходимо постоянно повторять наизусть «священ ные глаголы», что, как мы уже говорили, и занимало
весь день отшельника. Тогда он имел в сердце своем мысль о Боге, «памятование о Господе,), как часто гово
рили Отцы.
Надежда на Бога Мы уже говорили о том, сколь важное место в жизни

В
ситуации
духовной брани именно молитва являлась оружием par
excellence*, ибо Отцы очень хорошо осознавали необхо димость Божией помощи в этой борьбе против духов ного зла. В отличие от языческих аскетов они пре
жде всего рассчитывали на благодать Божию 44 . Молитва была одновременно и щитом, который их обороняет, и копьем, с помощью которого они атакуют врага. Строка из псалма, которую авва Моисей посоветовал Иоанну
Кассиану постоянно повторять: «Поспеши, Боже, изба
вить меня, поспеши, Господи, на помощь мне» (Пс.
2) -

как нельзя лучше подходит монаху, порабощен
ному собственными помыслами 45 . Чтобы отбить их атаку, другой старец советовал своему ученику: ~BCTaHЬ и молись, говоря: "Помилуй меня, Сын БожиЙ",)46. А еще один старец говорил так: «Встань, молись И пади

иметь в сердце слова евангельской молитвы мытаря:
«Господи, милостив буди мне грешному» (Лк.
18, 13)48.
Призыв прийти на помощь мог заключаться в одном
только простом взгляде в небо. Макарий Египетский учил, что много говорить не нужно: .Нужно только
воздеть руки и сказать: "Господи, как Ты можешь и как Ты знаешь, смилуйся", или если находишься в брани:
"Господи, помоги". Ибо Сам Он хорошо знает то, что полезно, и Он сотворит нам милостм 4 9. Он же говорил
одному брату: .Если придет тебе помысел, никогда не смотри вниз, но всегда смотри вверх, и тотчас Господь
придет тебе на помощм 5О . В апофтегмах несколько раз встречается выра
жение, наилучшим образом указывающее на то, что необходимо сделать для победы над врагом: .бросить немощь свою» или .бросить себя перед Богом»51. Авва
Пимен обычно употреблял его.• Брань против помыс лов, - говорил он, - это как если бы человек имел
- чашу с водой. Если огонь раз горится, он берет воду и гасит его. Пламя есть семя слева огонь, а справа
врага, а вода - это бросить себя перед очами Божи ими»52. Авва Исайя таюке часто повторял это выраже ние, для него оно означало суть монашеского труда
в келье: .Брось себя перед Богом и делай все возмож ное, чтобы противиться всякому помыслу, всеянному врагом»53. Это выражение, главным образом, озна чало

- то есть не оправдывай себя, не считай себя пра вым. «Обвиняй себя» - то есть, наоборот, считай себя сисм
виноватым и ответственным за все. Когда авва Пимен, описывая жизнь монаха в келье, перешел к вещам неви
димым, он сказал, что следует «укорять себя в любом
месте, где бы ни случилось бытм 55 . Предполагается, что для монаха это основное расположение души, именно
оно приводит к миру С Богом и с окружающими. Но в
то же время это никакой не «комплекс вины·>, ибо «я»,
которое в данном случае обвиняют, на самом деле не подлинное «я», глубинное, а лишь внешнее, мнимое. Оно и мешает монаху предстать в истине перед Богом. По мере его стараний именно подлинное «я·) должно
занять подобающее ему место перед очами Господа, и именно поэтому авва Пимен говорит так: «Когда душа
обвиняет сама себя, Господь ее любит»56. Однажды Александрийский патриарх Феофил при шел в Нитрию и спросил одного старца о том, что, по
его мнению, самое лучшее в образе жизни монахов пустынников. Старец ответил: «Постоянное обвине ние и осуждение самого себя»57. Любой христианин должен считать себя грешным перед Богом. Однако он ведь может и забыть про это, но отшельник в тишине своей кельи принуждает себя всегда об этом помнить. По выражению ав вы Пимена, это и значит «тайно пре
успевать в келье»58: это одновременно и условие, и показатель такого внутреннего прогресса.
ТРУдный отдых Другой старец говорил, что «монах, который всегда
обвиняет себя, находит отдохновение в благодати БожиеЙ·>59. Слово «отдых» часто встречается в апофтег мах, но оно имеет много различных смыслов. Есть, например, отдых для тела, разнеженность, физичес
кий комфорт, что Отцы пустыни всегда презирали6О. Но есть и духовный отдых, душевный мир, который в то же время не исключает и духовную брань. Вслед за Антонием Великим авва Пимен утверждал, что искуше
ния есть вещь совершенно необходимая для спасения

души, и искушений следует ожидать до самого пос
леднего своего вздоха61 • Мы знаем нескольких мона хов, пожелавших и получивших упокоение от духов
ной брани, но затем попросивших ее возобновления62 . Среди них был и Иоанн Колов, который осознал, что
никто не свободен от искушений, и обозначил монаха словом «труженик». И авве было достаточно, чтобы Гос
подь дал ему сокрушение и смирение63 . Иногда Бог, видя нашу слабость, отводит от нас искушения но тогда
нам должно сильно смиряться и оставаться начеку. Когда слишком многие докучали авве Макарию, он тайно ухо дил в подземный грот, который себе вырыл о• . Наибо лее эффектное из всех совершенных им исцелен ий произошло с женщиной, которую чародей превратил
в лошадь. Представим себе остолбенение ее храброго мужа, который, по возвращении домой, обнаружил на своей кровати кобылу: «Он рьщал, сокрушался, заводил беседу с этим животным, но ответа от него не добился». Деревенские священники не знали, что предпринять, и ~муж, взнуздав ее как лошадь, повел ее так в пустыню» до
кельи аввы Макария. Старец помолился, вылл святой воды на голову животного и «сделал ее видимой всем как женщину»81.
Макарий Александрийский в Келлиях также явил подобное дарование и снискал себе репугацию цели теля. Деревенский священник, страдавший от язвы на
голове, разъевшей больное место до кости, пришел и умолял его, и ~Макарий возложил на него руки, и через короткое время человек исцелился, у него вновь
стали расти волосы, и он ушел ЗДОРОвым,>82. Видя такие успехи старца, его вздумал искушать бес, побуждая его

покинугь пустыню и уйти в Рим, где он смог бы в боль
шей мере реализовать тот дар, что дал ему Господь. Авва справился с этим дьявольским искушением, но, как пишет Палладий, не без труда 83 .
Так же как и Палладий, Иоанн Кассиан избегает выставлять напоказ чудеса,
совершенные Orцами пус
тыни. В начале своих «Установлений» он объясняет, что совсем не собирается «излагать рассказы о чудесах и знамениях Божиих», хотя он не только слышал о них, но даже «видел своими собственными глазами множество невероятного,>84. Подобным же образом в своих «Собе седованиях,> Иоанн Кассиан говорит о том, что дол
жен обойти молчанием чудеса и знамения, совершен ные аввой Пиамуном, дабы ограничиться научением ко спасению и не давать пищу бесполезному и суетному удивлению своих читателеЙ 85 . Но он все же упоминает об экстраординарных исцелениях, совершенных стар цами. Один из них, авва Павел - монах, о злоключе ниях которого нам уже известно. Обратившись в бегс тво при виде женщины, встретившейся ему на пуги, он
оказался разбит параличом. Но духовная сила Павла ока залась столь значительной, «что елей, которым касались
тела его (которое лучше назвать трупом), когда им нати
рались недужные, туг же излечивал их, какой бы болез нью кто ни страдал,>В6. Другой авва, Авраам, пришел из пустыни на жатву. «Одна женщина, неся в руках своего ребенка, уже слабого и полумертвого из-за недостатка молока, пришла просить его с молитвами и
слезами.
Он дал ей выпить чашку с водой, над которой совершил крестное знамение. И тотчас ее иссохшая грудь чудес
ным образом наполнилась, и потекло молоко, бывшее в избытке»87. На другой день, идя по городу, авва Авраам
исцелил человека, который не мог ходить88 . Среди чудес, упоминаемых в апофтегмах, сразу же бросаются в глаза несколько экстраординарных фак тов, показывающих господство отшельников над при
родными стихиями (водой, огнем, солнцем, дождем),
которым они иногда пользовались 89 . В таких делах, как кажется, более всего благодати снискал авва Виссарион, который мог бы здесь посостязаться саввой Патерму фием. Как и последний, он гулял по воде как посуху и

останавливал солнце 90 • Однажды он превратил мор скую воду в пресную, чтобы напоить своего ученика. Антоний Великий как-то раз сделал так, что посреди пустыни забил родник91 . и остался невредимым%. Но это не идет ни в какое сравнение с подвигом аввы Коприя, который полчаса стоял посреди костра 97 , или аввой Еллием, который «В складках своей одежды часто носил горящие угли бра тьям, живущим по соседству,)98, или аввой Апеллесом,
который, владея ремеслом кузнеца, «брал раскаленный металл в руки, не испытывая ущерба,)99.
Апофтегмы приводят пять случаев исцелений. Два совершил авва Лонгин в окрестностях Александрии по отношению к женщинам,
одна из которых страдала
раком груди, а другая имела неизлечимый рубец на руке 100. В двух этих случаях исцеление так или иначе произошло против воли старца. Авва Макарий излечил
от паралича ребенка, которого отец принес к двери его
кельи 1О1 . Авва Исидор вернул слепому зрение 1О2 , но мы не знаем, как именно произошло это чудо. Наконец, к авве Пимену отец привел его маленького двоюрод
ного брата или племянника, «лицо которого под дейс твием (колдовства) было повернуто назад'). Авва в это время находился в окружении других старцев. Чтобы Пимен не мог уклониться от подвига, всех без исключе ния старцев попросили осенить малыша крестным зна

щему·>, говорит нам автор рассказа l06 . Равным обра зом и авва Патермуфий продлил жизнь находящемуся при смерти монаху, который должен бьm быть осуж
ден за свои грехи l07 . Несколько рассказов свидетель ствуют об изумительной силе, которую имели неко торые монахи или монахини над жизнью и смертью.
Один отшельник вернул к жизни распутную женщину, которая обольщала его и внезапно умерла 108. Другой
старец добился воскресения своего ученика, которому угрожала смерть как наказание за совершенный им
грех и который на самом деле умер 109. Равно как и миря нин, насмехавшийся над аммой Сарой, глядя, как она
перепрыгивает ручей, бьm убит всего лишь одним сло вом, случайно оброненным монахиней. Но этот непоч тительный человек бьm возвращен ею к жизни с помо щью простой молитвы: «Иисус мой, верни его к жизни,

Мы понимаем, что смирение этих отшельников из
за таких чудес могло быть подвергнуго сильному испы танию. Но они хорошо знали, что сами по себе не спо собны их творить и признавали их делом Божиим, как
любил говорить об этом Антоний ВеликиЙ l12 . «История монахов» таюке подчеркивает это: «Они И до сего дня воскрешают мертвых... и все, что Спаситель совершил через святых, совершает Он ныне и через них»113. Всем хорошо известно, что даже такая сила не тво

слез, если не со стороны умирающего, то, по крайней
мере, со стороны тех, кто его окружает. Когда Макарий
Великий бьm близок к своей кончине, старцы Нитрии послали делегацию к нему в Скит, чтобы умолить его прийти повидать их в последний раз. Когда он пришел к ним, старцы просили его сказать слово собравшимся братьям. Авва изрек: «Будем плакать, братья, чтобы очи наши источали слезы прежде, чем мы отойдем туда, где

Однако в целом отшельников нисколько не страшил день приближения смерти. Египтяне всегда оказывали ей хороший прием. С древних времен религиозные представления заставляли египтян лишь

стороннем мире. Христианство только усилило эту ори
ентацию на «жизнь будущего века», которая и является истинной жизнью. Именно эта перспектива ясно про
ступает в образе жизни Отцов пустыни. В их поведении перед смертью следует видеть одновременно отраже
ние верований их предков и выражение их собствен ных христианских убеждений. У большинства из них страх смешивался с радостью и душевным покоем, но
сам этот страх происходил от смирения. В апофтегмах мы находим совсем мало нюансов таких чувств, иногда с оттенком юмора, что хорошо соответствует жизнера достному нраву египтян.
Когда один старец в Скиту, имени которого мы, к сожалению, не знаем, бьm при смерти, то братья, окру жив его ложе, плакали. А он, открыв глаза, три раза рас смеялся. Братья спросили его о причине смеха, и он им
ответил: «Первый раз я засмеялся тому, что вы боитесь

Смерть без свидетелей Чтобы избавить окружавших от дополнительной скорби, некоторые старцы предпочитали умирать без
свидетелей. Так, Павел Фивейский попросил Антония Великого сходить за милотью для погребения, кото рую подарил ему Афанасий Александрийский, «желая таким образом, - как пишет его агиограф, - облег чить ему печаль от своей смерти»85. Иоанн Ликополь ский просил оставить его на три дня одного. Он пре
клонил колени на молитву и отошел ко Господу86. Часто отшельники, хорошо знавшие друг друга, хотели пови
даться последний раз перед смертью 87 . Но иногда один из них, узнавший о скорой кончине другого, предпочи тал остаться в своей келье и отсрочить свою встречу до
свидания с ним в мире ином 88 . Случалось так, что неко торые пустынники умирали без свидетелей в своих кельях и только через несколько лет кто-то обнару живал их труп или скелетВ 9 . Но обычно умирающий отшельник был окружен старцами и братией, которые утешали его своим присутствием и своими молитвами и внимательно слушали его последние слова.
Последние слова старцев Апофтегмы передают нам большое число наставле ний, произнесенных Отцами незадолго до смерти. При всем их разнообразии они все же отражали главные

идеи тех, кто их произносил. Авва Виссарион, напри

А вот другой монах имел причину беспокоиться при приближении смерти. Инок по имени Арес рассказал, что один из его соседей каждый день крадет у него деньги, которые он
получает от продажи сделанных
им циновок Когда он выходит с кувшином за водой, вор с помощью отмычки входит в его келью и забирает
деньги. По прошествии шести месяцев он разделил деньги на две половины и оставил на них записку для
вора, чтобы тот оставил ему одну из двух частей на про
питание. Вор не обратил на это внимание и продолжал свои кражи в течение трех лет, после чего заболел и,
чувствуя приближение смерти, пришел к своей жертве просить прощения. Арес поцеловал руки и ноги умира ющего, говоря: «Да благословит Господь эти руки и эти ноги, ибо они научили меня быть монахом!» Когда рас каявшийся брат умер, Арес схоронил ero 106. И еще один поучительный рассказ о смерти заслу живает того, чтобы его привести. Речь идет о двух бра тьях, так привязанных друг к другу, что Господь поз
волил им умереть вместе. Один из них был болен и не мог идти на субботнюю службу. Другой рассказал об этом братии в церкви, и они все вместе отправились в субботу к изголовью больного. Затем в воскресенье выяснилось, что тот умирает. Его брат сказал ему: «Ты умрешь, брат мой, и покинешь меня? Прости, но я не позволю тебе меня оставитм. Затем он попросил при нести циновку и лег на нее. Тотчас его охватил жар, и он скончался. После этого умер его брат, и их обоих похо ронили BMecTe 107.
Кончина и nогребение Если о последних минутах жизни Отцов пустыни наши источники рассказывают часто, то о подроб ностях самой смерти и последующем погребении наоборот, довольно редко. Иногда упоминаются исход
души из тела и ее вознесение на небеса, но эти описа ния не выходят за рамки благочестивых клише класси ческой агиографии. Так, например, старцы видят, как ангелы вместе с сонмом мучеников принимают душу

аввы Ануфа и возносят ее на небеса 108 , или как душа аввы Пафнугия возносится к небесам «среди хора пра ведников и ангелов, славящих Бога>,) 109. Рассказы пахо мианской традиции более детальны. Погребение отшельников совершалось, без сом нения, самым простым способом. В песке вырывали могилу СС любезной помощью львов или без нее) и помещали туда тело, чтобы затем засыпать его песком. Но бьmи и специалисты. Авва Патермуфий, например, проявлял особую заботу о мертвых. Его ученик просил его позаботиться таюке и о нем. Он умер раньше своего аввы. Тогда Патермуфий исполнил всё необходимое при погребении и громко спросил при всех: «Хорошо ли Я позаботился о тебе, дитя, или осталось что-то?,> И многие услышали голос юноши: «Достаточно, отче, ты исполнил обещанное»110. Монах, подвизавшийся на Синае, попросил своего
соседа бросить его нагой труп в пустыне, чтобы он бьm съеден дикими зверями и хищными птицами, ибо, как сказал он, «я много согрешил пред Богом и не

Рассказывают, что один старец получил от Бога бла годать видеть Отцов во славе и увидел их всех, но,
к большому своему удивлению, не нашел среди них Антония Великого. На заданный им вопрос, почему так,
ему ответили: «Где Бог, там и Антоний·) 1 16. Великий отец монахов таким образом стал скрыт в Боге, а это значит, что тело его пребывает невидимым от взоров людских до последнего дня.

бенно святой Антоний, который должен был стать героем его фильма, но, к сожалению, смерть режиссера помешала этому замыслу. Жертвоприношение Алек сандра, который сжигает дом, осуждает себя на добро
вольное молчание и отказывается от того, что любит, выдавая себя за сумасшедшего, чем-то напоминает пол ное

приводимой Иоанном Кассианом4, оно так и остается сухим. Внешний результат имеет небольшое значение. Христианская святость заключается не в показных под вигах, но в смиренных поступках, совершаемых еже
дневно и с любовью теми детьми, которые лишь стара ются угодить своему Отцу, в чистоте сердца совершая
всё, о чем Он их просит. Это и бьmо сутью повседнев ной жизни обитателей пустыни, так как мы видим ее, словно филигрань, что просвечивает сквозь их соб ственные изречения и воспоминания их учеников.
Мы вправе удивиться тому, что столь простое и сми ренное существование вот уже пятнадцать веков оказы
вает влияние на весь христианский мир. С точки зрения материальной, египетское монашество не имело серь езных последствий. Жилища монахов, расположенные
на близком расстоянии от обитаемых мест ности в Нитрии И Келлиях,

монастыри стали центрами духовной жизни Коптской
церкви. Патриарха и епископов выбирали из монашес кой среды, и постепенно здесь прочно укоренился сим
биоз египетского христианства и монашества пустыни,
симбиоз, который придавал силы христианской вере, находящейся под владычеством мусульман. Так Отцы пустыни продолжали поддерживать жизнь в Коптской церкви самими местами, где они подвизались и где их
потомки до сих пор благоговейно сохраняют память о них.
Свет, который исходил от Отцов пустыни, начи ная с

века постепенно распространялся повсюду,
не прекращая свое действие в Церквях всех конфес сий, включая и те из них, что не разделили монофи
зитских убеждений
коптов.
Его
влияние
особенно
заметно в Палестине, Сирии, Малой Азии, в Греции и
России благодаря широкому распространению житий и апофтегм, переведенных на многие языки. В нема лой степени благодаря посреднической деятельности Иоанна Кассиана, который приспособил учение еги петских пустынников для нужд западных киновитов,
святой Бенедикт принял это наследие и передал его
своему бесчисленному духовному потомству. Но бене диктинские и цистерцианские монахи

Но наиболее примечателен новый всплескинтереса к Отцампустыниодновременноподвумнаправлениям - в научном плане и с точки зрения практики хрисгиан
ской жизни. Историки, филологи и социологи ныне вполне
серьезно
воспринимают
людей,
которых
долгое время принято бьmо считать сумасбродными фанатиками. Видный современный английский исго рик, специалисг по поздней Античносги, Питер Браун
видит в их апофтегмах «ни С чем не сравнимое собра ние мудрых афоризмов»6, ~последний пример - и один из самых значительных

нравов и духа первых отшельников. Но, быть может, новые поколения в большей сгепени, чем прежние, CMOгyr оценить Отцов пустыни, позавидовать им или даже найти у них те человеческие и хрисгианские цен
носги, которые ныне не в почете: уединение и безмол вие, аскезу и созерцание, погружение в себя и душевную щедросгь, просготу и искренность, духовное руководс
тво и послушание, нестяжательство и смирение. Всем тем,

жил в Каире, часто навещая монахов обители Святого Макария, где неизменно находил теплый прием. Поез дки по разным коптским монастырям, в том числе и
визит в знаменитый монастырь Святого Антония возле
Красного моря, познакомили отца Люсьена с повсе дневной жизнью современных коптских монахов, в которой еще можно разглядеть отдельные следы древ них монашеских практик, и помогли ему лучше понять
первых отцов пустыни, жизнь которых
интересовала
его уже давно.
По возвращении в Сен-Пьер отец Люсьен был назна чен на должность руководителя издательства «Солем», которую он был вынужден оставить через семь лет по
состоянию здоровья. Но он продолжал свои публика ции, встречи и беседы с большим числом ученых, тем более что уход на покой предоставил ему возможность более активного участия в конференциях и коллоквиу мах. Говоря об ученых занятиях отца Люсьена, следует упомянуть еще об одном исследователе, который ока зал на него большое влияние и которого отец Люсьен считал своим мэтром. Это - отец Ириней Осер, иезуит, который много сил отдал изучению монашеской тра
диции христианского Востока и бьm одним из тех знаменитых ученых хх столетия, которые познако мили Запад с духовным наследием восточного хрис
тианства 3 • Именно он и порекомендовал дому Люсьену заняться текстами отцов пустыни.

«исследовательских
проекта»:
сочинения
дома Поля Дела1Та, третьего настоятеля аббатства Солем (с 1890 по 1921 год), и мир отцов пустыни. Но если первый носил явно локальный характер, то вто
рой вывел отца Люсьена в ранг одного из лучших спе циалистов по духовной традиции первых отшельников,
открывшего для широкой публики интереснейший мир раннемонашеских апофтегм. Конечно же были и дру гие удачи: публикация в известной французской серии «Христианские источники,) (Sources chretiennes) сочи нений Дорофея Газского (в сотрудничестве с домом
Ж. дё Превийем), перевод на французский язык духов ных писем Варсануфия и Иоанна, переизданный впос ледствии в тех же «Христианских источниках') парал лельно с греческим текстом, статьи для многочислен
ных периодических изданий, в том числе и таких ува
жаемых, KaKStudiaAnselтiana иStudiаРаtristiса, участие в «Коптской энциклопедии,), статья о святителе Иринее
Лионском для знаменитого

и многое иное. Но все же широкую известность отцу Люсьену принесла именно публикация французского перевода корпуса монашеских апофтегм, которые, по
его собственному признанию, он собирал так же, как другие коллекционируют редкие марки или драгоцен
ности. Удивительно, но ему удалось почти невозмож
ное: собрать, сравнить, систематизировать и издать практически все известные изречения отцов пустыни,
рассеянные по разным рукописным сборникам на мно гих языках христианского Востока и Запада. И если для русского читателя знакомство с этим интереснейшим памятником монашеской письменности ограничено в основном двумя дореволюционными русскими пере
водами всего лишь двух известных сборников таких изречений (ныне эти переводы существуют во мно жестве переизданий)4, то перед человеком, читающим по-французски, этот источник открыт теперь в пол
ном объеме. Не ограничиваясь существующими изда ниями текстов, отец Люсьен - там, где это бьmо необ ходимо, - переводил непосредственно с рукописей. Так ПрОИЗОIIUЮ с переводом так называемого «ано-

нимного собрания», оригинальный греческий текст которого издан лишь частично. Первый сборник дом
Люсьен издал в

меткое слово, сжатое высказывание или изречение. Жанр апофтегм был известен еще с Античности - можно вспомнить апофтегмы филосо фов, особенно киников - краткие и подчас язвитель ные, утверждающие жизненные принципы словом или
«жестом». Например, такие: «Кто-то бранил его (Дио гена.

А в.) за то, что он посещает подозрительные
места. На это он заметил: "и солнце туда заглядывает, но не оскверняется"», «В ответ на брань лысого человека Диоген заметил: "Над тобой я смеяться не стану, а вот волосы твои хвалю за то, что они сбежали с такой дур ной башки"» или

их исток - ближневосточную дидактическую тради цию «Поучений» И «Книг премудрости,). Однако, как бы там ни было, смело можно угверждать одно

своей суги этот памятник почти целиком принадле
жит к духовной вселенной первых египетских подвиж
ников. И в этом главная его особенность. Другие извес тные нам тексты очень часто представляют собой как бы «внешний взгляд», поскольку вышли из-под пера тех, кто сам не принадлежал к миру отцов пустыни.
Споры о том, насколько достоверно изобразил свя титель Афанасий Александрийский в Житии Антония Великого своего героя, не угихают до сих пор. Дру гой не менее известный источник, «Историю монахов»,
сейчас склонны рассматривать как ранний образец «паломнической,) литературы с необходимыми атри
бугами жанра

множеством чудес и обилием эпите
тов в превосходной степени. Палладия, автора не менее известного «Лавсаика,), давно подозревают в том, что на его представления о египетском монашестве сильно
повлияли взгляды его духовного наставника, «фило софа пустын» Евагрия, а Иоанна Кассиана - в том, что он, возвращаясь к событиям двадцати- или тридца тилетней давности, повествует о бесхитростной аскезе монахов Скита изысканным стилем александрийцев. Есть, конечно, круг житийных источников о Пахомии
Великом, вышедших из-под пера монахов его конгре гации, но ведь и здесь жизнь монашеской общины мы видим сквозь призму ее основателя, его первых преем
ников и тех, кто стремился особым образом запечат леть их жизнь .для последующих поколений кинови тов. Примерно то же можно сказать и о сохранившемся по-коптски так называемом «Житии Шенуге», вьщер жавшем, как сейчас принято полагать, не одну редак
цию. Это, скорее, коллективная память общины о ее основателе. Думается, что пугь апофтегм к своему чита
телю был принципиально иным

слова старцев ниж
неегипетских пустынь, сказанные ими по конкретному
поводу, быстро стали достоянием всего монашеского мира, но не угратили при этом своих уникальных черт.

При всем разнообразии апофтегм их можно свести к двум основным типам. Это изречение старца (либо его краткий диалог с учеником, либо небольшая пропо ведь) и рассказ о старце (иногда объемом до несколь ких страниц). Высказывалось предположение, что изначальное ядро апофтегм составляют именно изре чения старцев, сказанные ученикам по конкретному
поводу, которые потом в значительной степени абстра гировались от своего изначального контекста и «ОКРУ
жалисЬ» небольши~ш рассказами про старца или даже цитатами из творений, иногда даже не происходящими
из монашеской среды. Однако более разумным бьmо
бы предположить, что рассказы про старцев появля лись одновременно с распространением в монашеской
среде их поучений. Ведь святой, как известно, пропове дует и поучает не только словом, но и действием: авва может кидать камни в языческую статую, а потом кла
няться ей, показывая таким образом своим ученикам, у кого им следует учиться бесстрастию; может наце пить на спину дырявый мешок с песком, сравнивая его со своими грехами и предостерегая тем самым дру
гих монахов от осуждения ближнего; он может помочь
грабителям погрузить на верблюда все свое скром ное добро из кельи, явив полную нестяжательность; в конце концов, он может пойти заночевать в язычес
кий храм, положив себе под голову мумию в качестве подушки ... Чем ,). Мы тоже, вслед за ним, попробуем выразить надежду на то, что комфорт не всегда мешает религиозной созерцательности
...
В вопросе о монашеской одежде существуют как
минимум два взаимосвязанных между собой аспекта. Первый заключается в реконструкции одежд первых монахов и их последующего изменения, а второй

том, как и с какого времени одежда монахов понимается
именно как особая, монашеская, и получает, помимо прочего, статус «знака» или «символа>,), а облачение в нее

кий пугь. Отец Люсьен касается обоих этих вопросов.
В первом случае он достаточно детально и критически анализирует материал,

ческим данным, так и по письменным источникам,

можно надеяться, что некоторые аспекты данного про
цесса станут нам яснее. Пока же мы можем согласиться с отцом Люсьеном в том, что, по крайней мере к концу

века, особая монашеская одежда уже бьmа распро
странена по всему Египту и ясно выделяла монахов из среды мирян.
В разделе о монашеской еде отец Люсьен, на наш
взгляд, убедительно развенчивает миф об изможден ных и истощенных людях, ушедших в пустыню, чтобы
голодать ~дo победного конца». Ведь главное здесь

не
соревнование в том, кто съест меньше, а умеренность
в еде как основной принцип монашеского подвига. Ведь в отличие от некоторых других религиозных тра диций тело в христианской аскетике мыслится такой
же необходимой частью человека, как и душа. Значит, и ему нужен свой (,прожиточный минимум». И опас
ность здесь кроется как в избытке, так и в недостатке: излишнее ограничение в пище, так же как и чревоуго
дие, может сделать монаха легкой добычей для бесов. Если перевести разговор в плоскость повседневности, то можно сказать, что рацион питания монахов еще
изучен недостаточно. Есть вопросы и по тому, что нам уже известно. К примеру, неясно, что представляла
собой (·жареная соль», упомянутая у Иоанна Кассиана как монашеское лакомство. Есть известные расхожде ния в данных папирусов и нарративных источников.

Так, в одном из найденных в монастыре Наклун доку ментов упоминаются моллюски. Но в тех текстах, что
нам известны, нет, как кажется, информации о том, что эти ~морские гaды~ входили в монашеский рацион. Мы
таюке не знаем, считались ли они постной пищей или скоромной. Отмечалось, например, и такое противо
речие

если в папирусах упоминание о рыбе встре
чается довольно часто, что может быть свидетельством ее достаточно широкого распространения в монашес
ком «меню~, то агиографические тексты дают нам при
мер жестких ограничений на рыбу: ее в основном поз волено есть немощным, больным и, может быть, гостям. Правда, следует указать на то, что папирусы датируются
более поздним временем, чем основные письменные источники, и они мо:ryr свидетельствовать об опреде ленных послаблениях в прежде строгих пищевых огра ничениях (поздняя коптская агиография могла вос производить эти ограничения уже как «топос~). Отец
Люсьен пишет о том, что уже к концу

века имеет
место снижение суровых правил, и в качестве гастро
номического изыска, возможно, уже тогда начинают
фигурировать «соленые рыбки~ ... Нет, как кажется, особой нужды упоминать, что Сред невековье как на востоке, так и на западе христианского
мира

это время особого этикета. Не будет таюке силь
ным преувеличением сказать, что монашеский этикет в
наибольшей степени проявлялся при приеме посети телей. Отец Люсьен делает попытку реконструировать его детально, проявляя при этом нем алую «изобрета тельностм: он восстанавливает обычное начало беседы отшельника с посетителем, используя апофтегму об искушаемом
монахе,
который
попеременно
играет
то роль самого себя, то старца, якобы пришедшего к нему. В этой связи следует добавить, что иногда неко торые особенности агиографического текста, которые на первый взгляд мо:ryr показаться лишь литературным приемом, на самом деле отражают подлинные черты
монашеского быта. Так, в одном коптском тексте, кото
рый мы изучали, таюке упоминались правила монашес кого благочестия при встрече подвижников друг с дру гом. Странствующий монах, подходя к келье другого

инока, стучался и называл того по имени еще до того,
как мог его увидеть. Сначала мы решили, что речь идет о тонкой «игре на именах», которая не имеет отноше ния к реальности и является лишь «знаком», подчерки
вающим особую проницательность Отцов-пустынни ков. Каково же бьm наше удивление, когда мы узнали, что во время недавних раскопок в Фиваиде рядом с
монашескими кельями бьmи обнаружены надписи с именем подвижника и просьбами молиться за него! Значит, далеко не всё, что с первого взгляда может показаться лишь агиографическим «клише», на самом деле является таковым. Нам остается только добавить, что правила приема гостей у египетских отшельников,
возможно, бьmи не такими формальными, как, напри мер, сложный придворный церемониал, но все-таки они старались им следовать, хорошо понимая, что слу
чайностей в этом мире не бывает и угодить гостю

значит угодить Самому Господу: ведь именно Он устра ивает так, чтобы прибывшие посетители не только не стесняли духовное развитие монаха, а, наоборот, спо собствовали ему. Естественно, что к повседневности следует относить
не только пребывание отшельника на одном месте, но и его перемещения в пространстве

тем более что
в последнее время признано, что мир отцов пустыни
был более «мобильным», чем это ранее представля лось исследователям. Отец Люсьен постарался по воз можности подробно осветить вопрос того, как, куда и почему путешествовали отцы-пустынники. В этой же главе своей работы отец Люсьен касается другой инте ресной и мало еще разработанной темы

затронул не только «материальный», но И духовный аспект путешествия. Оставаясь на месте, монах пос
тоянно пребывает на пути к Богу, и наоборот, куда бы монах ни шел, он все равно пребывает в келье. Как это

ную суть монашеского подвига: нужно только научиться
понимать за внешними на первый взгляд вещами важ ные духовные категории.
Отец Люсьен хорошо понимает, что отшельничес тво в его «классическом»
виде, предполагающем пол
ное уединение, являлось только идеалом, который воп
лощался редко и был доступен лишь немногим. Ведь чтобы передавать друг другу опыт духовной жизни
подвижники вынуждены были общаться и, как пока зывает внимательное чтение апофтегм, делали они это весьма охотно. По всей видимости, жизнь в основных монашеских центрах Нижнего Египта
-
Нитрии, Кел
лиях и Скиту - бьmа подчинена недельному ритму. Всю неделю монахи пребывали порознь, а на выход ные приходили на совместное богослужение и трапезу. Конечно, могли быть и варианты: часто монах подви зался не один, а вместе со старцем или даже в неболь шой монашеской общине, но речь ведь идет о сов местных выходных собраниях всей «конгрегации~. И здесь, как не раз подчеркивает отец Люсьен на стра ницах своей книги, монахи
могли оставаться про
стыми людьми со своими вполне понятными челове
ческими слабостями: ~Bo время духовной проповеди аввы монахи могли дремать или даже спать ... Однако
стоило старцу начать рассказывать слегка фривольную историю, братия туг же просыпалась и начинала вни мательно слушать».
Отец Люсьен вполне ясно показывает важную роль старцев в организационном упорядочивании монашес
кой жизни на самом раннем ее этапе: вокруг старцев
образуются малые общины их учеников, и некоторые из них перерастают затем в более крупные монашес кие объединения. Так, например, очень возможно, что четыре известных монастыря Скита выросли из общин, изначально объединившихся вокруг известных стар цев. По сути, такой процесс имел место по всему Египту,
однако объединения Нижнего Египта и киновии Вер хнего Египта существенно разнились по своим орга
низационным принципам. Монахи-киновиты собира-

лись вокруг подвижника, который основывал общину
(как, например, в случае с Пахомием Великим) и вос питывал
у
них
уважение
к
авторитету
настоятеля.
После кончины настоятеля его место занимал дру гой игумен, назначенный основателем общины или
избранный монахами. Но в среде отшельников и полу
отшельников
формальная
иерархия
отсутствовала,
существовал только духовный и моральный авторитет старцев. Однако насколько сильно было неформаль
ное влияние старцев, если сравнивать его с формаль ной властью настоятеля в киновиях
-
вопрос не такой
простой. Возможно, оно было куда более действен ным, чем это может показаться на первый взгляд. Так, например, подвижник Валент, рискнувший утверждать, что не нуждается в причастии, поскольку видел Христа,
был по распоряжению старцев закован в цепи и провел
таким образом целый год (Лавсаик, гл.
25). Но в любом
случае сейчас, когда довольно много внимания уде
ляется «альтернативным» монашеским объединениям, таким, например, как
sarabaitae и remnuoth 12 ,
а сущес
твование монашества в Египте как единой духовной
традиции поставлено под вопрос, не худо бы еще раз напомнить о той организационной и объединяющей роли, которую сыграли в монашеской истории первые поколения египетских отцов пустыни.
В последнее время, в нем алой степени благодаря феминистскому движению и гендерным исследова ниям, усилился интерес к «женской теме» и отноше ниям полов в различных аскетических традициях. И христианское монашество не стало исключением. Если
еще лет тридцать назад трудно бьmо найти даже снос ную статью по этому предмету, то ныне в распоряже нии заинтересованного читателя есть уже несколько
монографий по различным аспектам женской аскезы периода поздней Античности, не говоря уже о более скромных научных публикациях 13 • В столь тонком и деликатном вопросе, как отношения монахов с жен
щинами или даже о еще более «заповедном»

предельно честно говорить с современным ему миром,

тель сможет убедиться, что «обширные сведения источ ников об Orцах пустын,' которыми мы располагаем, показывают, что у них нет и тени того манихейства,
которое вынуждало бы их презирать тело, пол, женщин, но мы находим там здоровый реализм по отношению к плоти». В этой связи стоит напомнить еще и то, что цер ковный чин венчания в Византии бьm составлен имен но монахами

так о каком же презрении к супружес
кой жизни может ИДТИ речь! Orдельные, довольно нели цеприятные, высказывания монахов о женщинах в счет не идуг: часть никогда не следует ставить на место целого.
Ошибки и искажения в столь непростом вопросе отец Люсьен справедливо склонен видеть внеадекватности наших представлений о подвижниках

менном обществе, где секс и сексуальность стали пред метом весьма важным, бывает сложно беспристрастно понять подлинное целомудрие и воздержание от любых плотских удовольствий».
Об одном положении работы отца Люсьена стоит упомянуть особо. Он пишет о явлениях «потусторон них сил» И чудесах как о фактах монашеской повседнев ности. Давно уже следует признать, что феномен чуда
как такового не верифицируем убедительно средствами современного научного знания в принципе, не говоря
уже об арсенале гуманитарных наук Из этого тупика, как нам думается, существует два выхода. Либо оставить в стороне все сведения о чудесах, либо признать чудеса культурным фактом, фактом ментальности и изучать их с этой точки зрения. И если первая парадигма не
даст нам ничего С если прямо не исказит историческую картину!), то вторая откроет ряд интересных перспек-

тив. Начать хотя бы с того, что нынешние представле ния о чуде сильно отличны от тех, которыми жили пер
вые подвижники. ДшI них, как пишет одна современная
исследовательница, чудеса бьmи не «нарушением зако нов природы~, потому что тогда просто-напросто еще
не бьmо такой концепции. Чудеса являлись «Особым проявлением силы небес, которая и учреждает мир во всякое время~14. Они демонстрируют представление о том, что в пустыне эти проявления были свойственны
не всем, но святым, то есть тем, кто оказался способен стяжать в себе подобные «знаки Царствия~, принадле жать одновременно к двум мирам

ному. Чудо тесно связано с понятием святости, факти
чески оно есть фУН:КЦUЯ святого 15 • Но мало того

есть гарантия «связи BpeMeH~ (библейского и нынеш него), доказательство присутствия Божиего в мире. Ведь недаром Сатана, явившись к известному подвижнику,
авве Аполлону, после того как тот совершил чудо умно жения хлебов, задает ему вопрос: «Ты разве Илия или кто-то из Пророков И апостолов, что дерзаешь совер
шать такое?»

и слышит в ответ: «А разве Бог ныне

сходятся горизонты земного и небесного, но одновре
менно там идет напряженная борьба сил света с силами тьмы, что само по себе несколько меняет грани реаль ности: когда отшельник лично встречает дьявола или
видит ангела, то, как отмечает отец Люсьен, ни того ни другого это не удивляет. В пустыне такое является нормой. И это лишь один из многих примеров. Другое следствие подобной «измененной реальности»

шения отшельников с животными. И здесь тоже, как
и во многих других местах своей книги, отец Люсьен переходит в «ментальное пространство~ своих героев, но делает это
незаметно
и
ненавязчиво,
а
иногда
и
с мягким юмором, свойственным мудрым и духовно
опытным людям: «Вопреки тому, что мы могли бы поду мать, эти отношения ПОДЧИНЯЛИСЬ строгим и неизмен-

двигаться так, чтобы те пугали монахов. Но это всё не более, чем иллюзия. Настоящие животные служат Богу и людям, и если они иногда и наносят вред смертным, то исключительно тем, кто заслуживает того по грехам своим».
Следует отметить, что чудеса во многом еще оста ются для исследователей
terra incognita.
Их типология
на материале монашеских текстов разработана слабо, и надо еще приложить немало усилий, чтобы понять, какие функции чудеса несут в конкретном агиогра фическом тексте, как автор использует их описание,
чтобы показать образ святого или решить какие-то дру гие свои задачи. Ведь очевидно, что чудеса могут быть «нагружены» гораздо большим смыслом нежели то, что о них непосредственно сообщает автор. В заключение позволим себе отметить те положе ния книги отца Люсьена, с которыми мы не во всем согласны. Так, он пишет, что за несколько последних десятилетий бьmо обнаружено, что с конца III века монахи
уже
присутствуют
почти
повсеместно
в
тех
регионах, где к этому времени утвердилось христианс
тво. Нам кажется, что это излишне оптимистический прогноз. В действительности, об автохтонности началь ной монашеской традиции можно говорить примени тельно к Сирии, Месопотамии и, возможно, Палести не

в последнем случае, впрочем, очень осторожно,
поскольку палестинское монашество все же испыты
вало сильные «внешние» регионы

влияния. Во все остальные
проникало
извне,
чаще
всего
под влиянием Египта. Отец Люсьен, вслед за Антуа ном Гийомоном, считает, что началом монашества сле дует
считать уход христианских
аскетов
в
пустыню.
Это утверждение не бесспорно, учитывая факты сущес
твования в Египте и городского монашества: наиболее яркий пример такого рода

нома. Мы знаем о
том, что монашество имело там сильные позиции, но
нет никаких сведений, что оксиринхские подвижники «вернулись» В город из пустыни: скорее стоит предпо
ложить, что они

наследники традиций городской
христианской аскезы.
Отец Люсьен угверждает, что почти все отцы пус тыни ('по крови И языку» бьmи коптами, происходив
шими по большей части из сельского сословия. Пос ледние исследования, четко обозначившие влияние городского населения на развитие египетского мона
шества, и прежде всего работы польской исследова тельницы Е. Випшицкой, ставят эти угверждения под вопрос. Конечно, располагая очень скудными сведе ниями о социальном происхождении монахов, мы не
имеем надежных данных для того, чтобы выстроить четкие «социальные пропорции», но стоит задуматься
над тем, что в разных регионах Египта они могли быть разными. Так, например, сложно представить себе, что
монашеские общины Нижнего Египта, то есть наибо лее ('урбанизированной» и эллинизированной области Египта, сплошь состояли из бывших феллахов. Кстати говоря, отец Люсьен, давая (,список происхождения» отцов
пустыни,
по
суги,
опровергает эту точку зре
ния: среди них он находит бывшего царедворца, сыно вей купца, торговца сладостями, бальзамурга, плотника, красильщика, кузнеца, бывшего раба и каллиграфа. А вот упоминания о крестьянах крайне редки... Стоит
вспомнить и археологию. Та довольно изысканная стек лянная посуда, которую нашли в Келлиях, и те настен ные
орнаментальные
росписи,
сделанные
не только
в комнатах, предназначенных для работы и отдыха, но и в тех, что служили молельнями, выдают в своих
владельцах отнюдь не сельских жителей. Можно доба вить к этому и содержание рисунков:
помимо орна
ментов встречаются изображения лошадей, жирафов, львов, павлинов и голубей (последние, как известно, были символами воскресения), что тоже не способ ствует идентификации их заказчиков как крестьян.
Отец Люсьен соглашается с общераспространен ным мнением о том, что большинство монахов бьmи
малообразованны. Но и это угверждение сейчас под-

вергается критике. Правильное соотношение образо ванности и «невежества»

ников еще только предстоит найти. Ведь среди тех, кто отказывал светскому знанию в духовной пользе,
было немало таких, кто сам получил хорошее образо
вание. В то же время те, кто был более скромного про исхождения, могли crpемиться выучиться грамоте уже
в монастыре. Например, «Лавсаик» содержит замеча
тельные указания на хорошо образованных эллинизи рованных монахов. Другой пример

Онуфрия. Путешествующий в поисках совершенного монаха авва Пафнутий, автор этого Жития, находит в оазисе четырех молодых монахов, которые, пройдя
полный курс светского образования, ynmи подвизаться в пустын•. Да и сам отец Люсьен приводит несколько
подобных примеров: бывший переписчик авва Диос кор, каллиграф Марк и др. Так что не будем спешить с выводами: бурно развивающиеся эпиграфика и папи рология, вкупе с археологией и углубленным изуче нием текстов, еще смогут привнести сюда немало инте ресного.
Отец Люсьен полагает, что монахи-пустынники не испытывали никакого интереса к
эллинизированной
Александрии и ее интеллектуальной среде, а посещали этот город
исключительно
ради
патриарха,
автори
тет которого не ставили под вопрос. На наш взгляд, это слишком суровый приговор. У монахов имелись и другие причины посетить столицу Египта или какой
нибудь
иной
областной
центр.
Вспомним
хорошо
известные путешествия в Александрию Антония Вели
кого, чтобы укрепить христиан во время гонений. А авва Коприй, оказавшийся в городе по своим делам, затевает спор с манихеем, своей проповедью смущав
шим народ. Подобные примеры можно было бы про должить.
Наш автор пишет о том, что часто монахи делали всё возможное, чтобы избежать хиротонии, пос кольку относились К ней очень серьезно и не счи
тали себя достойными принять сан. Есть и показатель ные (,жесты»: известный подвижник Аммоний, ученик
аввы Памво, не желая становиться епископом, отсек

себе ухо. В поучениях извесгных подвижников можно найти предосгережения против принятия священства. Однако картина может выглядеть не сголь однозначно, если учесть, что данные документальных исгочников
VII-VIII веков показывают значительное усиление кле рикализации в монашеской среде Египта. Да и пре достережения известных подвижников

века иногда
интерпретируют с точностью до наоборот: предупреж дения связаны с тем, что «тяга принять сан,> среди мона
хов была довольно сильной. Утверждение отца Люсьена, что отцы пустыни были предшественниками психоаналитиков, как нам пред
ставляется, несколько неточно. Бесспорно, что и отцы
пустыни, и последователи Фрейда уделяли особое вни мание
«основным
инсгинктам,>,
укрытым
в
подсо
знании. Но на этом всё сходсгво заканчивается,
ибо
выводы, которые они делали, в корне расходятся: пси
хоанализ во главу угла ставит их фундаментальное и необратимое влияние на психику (с ними не стоит
бороться, их нужно пытаться как-то гармонизировать), тогда как отцы пустыни постулируют положить, доказывают

и, смеем пред
возможносгь их принципи
ального преодоления.
И, наконец, о самом главном. Отец Люсьен неод нократно
подчеркивает, что основной мотивацией прихода к монашесгву бьmи благодарносгь и любовь ко Христу, подражание его крестным мукам. Этот мотив, безусловно, присутствовал, но в пустыни Египта шли не только за этим. Как писал еще в начале хх века русский патролог И. В. Попов, подвижничеству египетских пус тынь ~бьm присущ еще мисгический элемент

чувс
тво непосредственного внутреннего общения души с Богом»; и далее он добавлял: ~Выйти из ограниченности своей человеческой природы и претвориться в Божесг венное есгество

вот что составляло последнюю цель
отречения, длинного и долгого подвига»16. «Если мы взыщем Бога, - говорил авва Арсений Великий, - Он явится нам, а если удержим Его, Он пребудет с нами». Можно вспомнить в этой связи и совет ав вы Иосифа авве Лоту: ~Если хочешь, стань весь как огонь'>. И дума ется, не будет большим преувеличением сказать, что

непреложно воспринимался восточным монашеством
как истинный и бесценный. Вот почему высказыва ния греческого консервативного богослова П. Трембе
ласа, будто бы видения света у великого византийского мистика ХI века преподобного Симеона Нового Бого слова можно объяснить простым напряжением нервов, вызвали взрыв негодования на Афоне l7 • Но католичес кая традиция, как известно, всегда относилась к подоб
ному опыту с большим подозрением: «Западная мысль, В частности, томизм, категорически возражает против
концепции нетварной благодати. Согласно томист ским взглядам, наша природа всецело тварна, и ничего нетварного нам принадлежать не может по определе
нию. Мы не можем участвовать в божественной жизни, мистический опыт нам недоступен, а Христос принес
в наш мир лишь прощение грехов, "оправдание" или своего рода амнистию>,) 18...
Но конечно же наши несогласия ни коим обра зом не умаляют все достоинства этой замечательной
книги.
Один
современный
исследователь
египетс
кого монашества как-то отметил: «Апофтегмы

ностальгическое воспоминание о случайно сохранив
шихся фрагментах истории, но поучительные слова живой традиции.) 19. И отец Люсьен хорошо это чувс
твует. Он отмечает удивительно живой интерес к тра диции «богословия пустыни>,) как со стороны простых верующих христиан, так и ученых: египетские подвиж
ники ныне «вошли·) В стены известнейших француз ских университетов, а католическое радио юга Фран ции каждое утро предлагает своим слушателям одну из
апофтегм с кратким ее комментарием. Не менее велик интерес к духовной традиции египетских отцов пус-

тыни И В самом Египте. Так, ревнитель древних мона
шеских традиций, отец Матта-аль-Маскин, вместе со своими учениками, подобно первым пустынножите лям, прожил около двенадцати лет в отдаленных пеще
рах перед тем, как поселиться в обители Святого Мака рия. По мнению монахов этого монастыря, подлинная монашеская жизнь осуществляется здесь несколькими
учениками отца Матта-аль-Маскина не в монастыре, а в
пещерах по соседству с обителью
-
то есть в том сози
дательном уединении, в котором пребывали первые подвижники. Нам думается, что Россия связана с тра
дицией отцов пустыни не менее, а может быть, и более тесными узами, чем современный Египет или Франция. Тем обиднее то, что хорошие издания, рассчитанные на широкого читателя и повествующие о начальной исто рии египетского монашества с учетом всех последних
достижений современной науки, у нас практически отсутствуют. Надеемся, что русский перевод книги отца

бавил две книги -Диалогов., чтобы продемонстрировать, что Мартин по святости и чудотворениям превосходил египетских отшельников.
Он использовал сведения, которые сообщил ему его друг Постумиан, совершивший паломничество в Египет около
400 года.
