Sir Bravedeed was a brave knight, but he did not feel brave around Princess Kay. His knuckles turned white. His knees knocked. He did not know how to say that he wanted to be friends with her. 2
G2_Book_13.indd 2
1/30/07 5:20:30 PM
Sir Bravedeed tried showing that he was a gentle knight. One time, Kay was going to step in a mud puddle. Sir Bravedeed knelt and laid his cape on the puddle so that her feet would stay dry. Kay just stepped on the cape and kept going.
3
G2_Book_13.indd 3
1/30/07 5:20:31 PM
Kay did not know she had hurt Sir Bravedeed. She was busy knitting. Kay had a real knack for knitting, and she knitted day and night. She did not see Sir Bravedeed kneeling in the mud. 4
G2_Book_13.indd 4

On a hike in the woods, Sir Bravedeed heard sad sighs. They came from Princess Kay! He raced to her.
5
G2_Book_13.indd 5
1/31/07 11:48:59 AM
“Can a gentle knight help?” Sir Bravedeed asked with hope. “I do not know,” Kay told him. “I cannot get this big knot out of my yarn.” 6
G2_Book_13.indd 6
1/30/07 5:20:49 PM
Sir Bravedeed reached in his knapsack for his knife. With one quick cut, he got rid of the knot. He tied the ends of the yarn.
7
G2_Book_13.indd 7
1/30/07 5:20:53 PM
Sir Bravedeed knelt. He handed the yarn to Princess Kay. “I am so happy!” she said. “So am I,” said the knight. 8

You can do a knot trick using rope. Just use the steps on these pages. Try the trick first, and get a knack for it. After you know it, show it to friends. 10
G2_Book_13.indd 10
1/30/07 5:21:12 PM
Start by holding up a rope. Say, “We know that when we tie a knot, we must let go of each end of the rope.” Ask one kid to tie a simple knot. Say, “See? You had to let go of both rope ends.”
11
G2_Book_13.indd 11
1/31/07 11:49:08 AM
Then take the knot out. Say, “I know how to tie a knot while holding both ends of the rope. My hands will not let go of the rope ends.” 12
G2_Book_13.indd 12
1/30/07 5:21:24 PM
Next, knock your knuckle on the table and place the rope on it. Cross your arms so that your right arm is on top of your left arm. Place each hand at the elbow bend. 13
G2_Book_13.indd 13
1/30/07 5:21:33 PM
Tuck your right hand under your left elbow. Bend and pick up one rope end with your right hand. Pick up the other end with your left hand. 14
G2_Book_13.indd 14
1/30/07 5:21:40 PM
Stretch your arms wide, still holding the rope ends. Say, “I just tied this knot while holding both ends of this rope!”
15
G2_Book_13.indd 15
1/30/07 5:21:43 PM
At last, smile in a knowing way as the kids clap. Say, “Now you know this knot trick. Try it with friends.”

People wrap lots of things. They may wrap a glass vase in paper to keep it safe. Then they use wrapping paper to wrap it up as a gift. 18

If children get a cut, moms and dads can clean it and wrap it! Wrapping a cut keeps it clean and helps it stop bleeding.

Some people hurt their wrists and wrap them. Wrist wraps help stop pain and heal hurt wrists. Athletes like wrestlers and bike riders wrap their wrists. That helps keep their wrists safe. 20

People use watches to keep track of time. This girl is wrapping a watch around her wrist. Its wristband has black spots.

People can wrap up in clothes to keep warm. This man has a scarf wrapped around his neck. These divers wriggled into special clothes that keep them warm when they dive in the cold sea. 22

Shops sell some foods in wrappers. We wrap food to keep it fresh and clean. Some foods are named wraps! This man is making a kind of sandwich named a wrap. It has grilled chicken and peppers inside of it.

Wrenches, pans, and hammers have handles. We wrap our hands around their handles so we can use them. We wrap our arms around people we love so we can hug them. 24

Mom, Dad, Jill, and Ed had birthdays in the same week. Kurt and his sister Pam went to buy them gifts. “Ed likes birds. We can get him this bird book about wrens!” said Kurt. 26
G2_Book_13.indd 26
1/30/07 5:22:35 PM
“Mom will like a silk scarf,” said Pam. “Find one with no wrinkles.” “We can get wrenches for Dad. He likes to fi x things,” said Kurt.
27

1/31/07 11:49:20 AM
“Will Jill like this wristband?” asked Kurt. “It is so little. She will have to wriggle it on her wrist. This bracelet will be much better!” said Pam.
28
G2_Book_13.indd 28
2/7/07 1:57:14 PM
Back at home, Kurt asked, “Will you wrap the gifts, Pam? I always do it wrong.” Pam said, “I will wrap if you will write the gift cards. Your handwriting is so nice.” 29
G2_Book_13.indd 29
1/31/07 11:49:25 AM
Pam stacked the wrapped gifts by Kurt. He wrote the cards. Then he turned to stick them on the gifts. Kurt looked at the wrapped gifts. The wrapped gifts looked the same!
30
G2_Book_13.indd 30
1/30/07 5:22:53 PM
Kurt worried that he might stick each card on the wrong gift. He had to take the wrapping off each gift. He tried not to wreck the wrapping as he took it off. 31
G2_Book_13.indd 31
1/30/07 5:22:57 PM
After Kurt glanced at each gift, he wrapped it back up and stuck the right card on it. “Now everyone will really have a happy birthday!” said Kurt.

Dolphins spend their lives in water, but dolphins are not fish. Like kittens and puppies, baby dolphins drink milk. Like people, dolphins need air. They use a blowhole like a nose to get it. 34

Dolphins may be gray, black, white, and other colors. Their names may tell what dolphins are like. Striped Dolphins have black stripes. Spotted Dolphins have white spots. Spinner Dolphins can spin when they leap. 36

Many dolphins spend their lives in seas, but river dolphins stay in rivers and lakes. Dolphins may swim in clusters named pods. Pods can have five dolphins. Pods can have hundreds of dolphins.

The weekend had just started. Phil had hoped for a fun day, but he had no plans. Mom made Phil help her clean. Phil moped as he dusted each photo frame. 42
G2_Book_13.indd 42
2/12/08 3:24:48 PM
At lunchtime, Mom and Phil stopped cleaning. Mom thanked Phil for his help, but Phil still moped. Then Mom gave Phil a pamphlet and said, “Enough moping! Look at this pamphlet about a dolphin show at Sea Park. Do you want to go there with a friend?”
43
G2_Book_13.indd 43
1/31/07 11:49:44 AM
Phil peeked at the pamphlet. Photos showed dolphins leaping through rings and tossing things. Photos showed dolphins ringing bells and grabbing fish. Phil started to smile.

Phil phoned his pal Phong and made plans. Then Mom drove them to Sea Park for the dolphin show. 45

The show started when Jazz the dolphin began clapping his flipper on the water. Phil laughed. The dolphin kept clapping, and Phil kept laughing. 46

1/30/07 5:24:05 PM
The dolphin trainer came out and said, “There are five phases to this show.” In the first phase, Jazz jumped through rings. In phase two, the dolphin tossed shapes through nets. In phase three, Jazz squeaked a rubber fish.
47
G2_Book_13.indd 47

In the next phase, Jazz rang bells. In the fifth phase, the dolphin leaped and flipped. When the show ended, Phil clapped. The dolphin did, too.
