Chapter One Dana screamed as a huge figure dropped down from the ceiling and landed in a crouch. She grabbed the nearest vial and hoped the intruder was after a formula, not a hostage. "They need to stop the telepathy, Councilman Cain," Reader Marion interrupted. Dana glared at Reader Marion. As if she would let that bitch read her man's mind and discover his secrets. Her secrets, too. Focusing her power, she built a shield around Jacob, strengthening the one he had and adding an additional one. Though his was strong and he was powerful, Dana knew no one who had more power than she did. It was the main reason she kept her secret so carefully guarded. She'd yet to meet another Reader who could actually change other 49


people's memories—something Council stressed as impossible. If they only knew... The electrodes were attached to Jacob's head. Dana held still even when Councilman Cain looked at her as if he expected a protest. It wasn't until the Reader frowned and turned to Cain that she allowed herself a smile. "Why is the screen still blank, Reader Marion?" Councilwoman Debra tapped her fingernails on the tabletop. "There's something keeping me from penetrating the man's mind." The Reader's lips thinned and her face began to show signs of strain. "Someone stronger than I am doesn't want his memories exposed to us." Councilman Cain growled. "I find it hard to believe that a man raised in captivity could have enough power to keep his thoughts and memories concealed." "If I may." Wade Greer stepped forward. "One of the reasons this man was kept imprisoned for so long by my kind was because of his mind-reading ability. The same ability he was born with. That was the reason why his mother was abducted and forced to mate with Wylfenne. The same power that your Reader Marion has. Who's to say that a male Reader wouldn't be more powerful than a female?" "No. This person was trained, and trained well, Commander Greer." Dana hadn't realized Greer had earned his position back. That was news to her. "No. This power is feminine." Marion turned and looked right at her. Dana stopped smiling and stared at the Reader. After a few minutes, Marion continued speaking. "I can't trace it to the source, but I have a suspicion I know who is trying to protect her mate." Gasps echoed around the room. "That's ridiculous! I have no Reader powers." Dana gripped the bench tightly. "Then you wouldn't mind submitting to our mind scan?" Cain challenged. "I mind." The hair on the back of her neck bristled as two guards walked toward her. "I've done nothing wrong, and you've no standing to force me to submit." "Leave her alone! I admit to my Reader powers. It's me blocking Marion. No one else." Dana winced at Jacob's confession. The man would really do anything to save her, wouldn't he? Only, by allowing them to read his mind, he would be dooming her. A Reader who could manipulate others? Her powers wouldn't be tolerated. She jumped to her feet and pointed at Greer. "He and his kind kept my mate imprisoned, trying to force Jacob to mate with their kind so they could breed Readers to help them defeat us!" "You're not helping," Jacob growled. "Leave it alone." "I won't! You're the victim here, and they're forgetting that." "I do have another confession." Greer's face flushed as he faced the Council again. "You do?" Councilwoman Debra smiled a toothy grin that Dana thought didn't bode well for the reinstated Commander. 51


"Jacob was sent here with the instructions to steal Sairah's formulas and kill Cade." More gasps raced around the room. "However—" The whispers drowned out Greer. "Silence!" Cain banged the gavel on the table. The room quieted instantly. "Do you realize what you are admitting to, Commander?" "I knew he'd never be able to kill Cade. The man is too smart. Too deadly. We already knew that Jacob couldn't mate with our kind. All our attempts had failed pitifully. We'd hoped that by sending him to your planet he'd find his mate. The mission was a lure to get him to Leandros without arousing too much suspicion from his captors. It was decided that he should be sent here with the hopes that his Areyl side would keep him from completing the mission and returning home." "And if he'd killed Cade?" Sairah demanded. "Then he would have deserved whatever punishment you'd have given him." Councilman Cain glared at Greer. "You expect me to let you walk out of here now, Wade Greer?" It wasn't as if we could just free him after all these years. Those who'd imprisoned his mother and experimented on him wouldn't be appreciative. "And because of your reputation, you were chosen to be the one to give him the order to kill me?" Cade frowned. "I'm afraid they find me as dispensable as they do him." More murmurs went through the crowd. "And maybe I helped come up with the plan. I knew no one could kill Cade. I trained with him. Jacob is no match for Cade's skill. I also knew Cade would find out why Jacob was trying to kill him, and that his compassionate heart would earn Jacob a fair trial." Councilwoman Debra stood up. "Due to the turn of events, I'm ordering this a private hearing." The crowd groaned. "Go home. You'll all hear about the events tomorrow, I'm sure." Dana headed for Jacob and hugged him. Things had gone from bad to worse. "I was trying to help." She looked up at him with a sad smile. "I know." He wrapped his arm around her. "But I'm already in trouble. You didn't need to make yourself a target. Now we're both at risk." Instead of continuing their conversation, Dana buried her face in his chest and inhaled his scent. It was odd how their bodies had instantly recognized each other. The mental connection allowed them to get to know each other almost instantly. If he'd been a bad person, she'd have known. He wasn't, and this whole thing was a big mistake. The Council would never see it that way, though. The fear and worry in his expression was for her, and she knew it. Knew it and hated it. For him she would go. But she didn't like it. She pulled free and stalked to the side door that she knew led to the prison cells. Even a containment cell wouldn't keep her from communicating with her mate. If they believed it would, they had another think coming. **** Jacob stared at the retreating form of his mate. He knew she wouldn't be able to stay out of trouble. Gods. He ran a hand through his hair. This whole thing had been nothing but one problem after another. The fact the Wylfenne had sent him to his death didn't bother him. That he never attempted to take Cade's life had to help a little. He hoped. And he hadn't taken the formulas. Not even after he'd mated with Dana. It would have been so easy. She trusted him and their bond implicitly; she never would have expected him to still try to steal the formulas. She'd been looking for him for a long time. Her flaming red hair seemed to get brighter as did the coloring in her cheeks. "He's an admitted assassin!" "No, he was sent here as one, but he never tried to kill me." "He was too busy humping Dana," Terry grumbled. Arnold elbowed him. Cade glared at his guards. "He's a dog. That's what they do. Hump." "You're crude, and this is a trial. Jacob didn't see the harm in cluing them in to the damage they caused to their Readers, knowingly or not. "Things have changed a lot in the past twenty years," Marion pointed out. "I lost my own mother, but trust me, it's not like it used to be. Gone are the days when we were slaves. Besides, if Dana is as powerful as I believe her to be, she would never be asked to stoop so low as to read the minds of criminals. Her powers would be better suited to help keep the planets at peace." Debra shook her head. "We don't think you're low." Jacob snorted. "We're not at peace." "No, but with you and Dana on the Council we would be two steps closer." Councilwoman Debra leaned close. "Think about it, Jacob. You're half Wylfenne and half Areyl. Both sides would feel more comfortable with you on the Council. You have lived as a Wylfenne and mated with an Areyl. You didn't try to kill Cade even though you were ordered to. You've suffered from both of us, and yet your true soul shines through loud and clear." "I was going to steal the formulas, though." Jacob grinned. 56


Cade slapped him on the back of his head. "Shut up while you're ahead." "This seems too good to be true, and I've learned never to trust anything like that." Cain shook his head. "I understand your mistrust, but it's honestly in our best interests to get you and your mate on the Council. Think of the impact you could make! We could be two steps closer to a truce. Wouldn't you want that?" Jacob didn't answer. He was positive Dana would refuse. "You and your mate would have guards like the rest of us, and you would live in a Council-appointed house. You wouldn't have to worry about the Wylfenne coming after you. Besides, once we know the full story, it would be pointless to kill you." "But gratifying to those who tortured me and killed my mother." "Just think about it. Either way, we're testing you both. Willingly or unwillingly, you will help us. Do you want the rewards that come with the titles or to remain imprisoned until we summon you to Council?" "I need to discuss this with my mate." Jacob wanted to answer for both of them. It was in his nature to take charge, but in this case he knew Dana needed to make her own decision. He wouldn't spend the rest of his life with his mate hating him for what he'd done to her. Dana giggled when Randolph fell into the water. He shifted into the form of a sixyear-old boy, tugged his brother into the lake and then climbed out. Before she could scold him, Joseph shifted into an eight-year-old boy and yanked Randolph back into the water. Jacob rose in a swift movement and crossed to the water's edge. He reached into the water and grabbed the backs of their necks, lifting them out of the water and holding them just high enough off the ground that their feet couldn't touch. "What have I told you two about wrestling near water?" Dana tuned them out and rolled onto her stomach. She glanced back at the sprawling mansion the Council had bought for them. Jacob had felt uncomfortable living on Leandros after having been raised to hate Areyls. Not only that, but she hadn't wanted to stay on Areyl after everyone learned she'd been a Reader all along. People assumed she'd automatically read their minds and knew all their secrets. At 58
