Chapter One The damn things made her look like a bug. Katie Davis pushed the borrowed, oversized, god-awful sunglasses up the bridge of her nose. No one had answered, which was completely strange because at least one of them always had their cell phone on. How could all three be off? Heart pounding and the coppery taste of fear in her mouth, Katie had shrugged into her jacket and slipped into the cool March night. The wind had blown hard and she’d shivered—but it had been more than the chill air. It had been a terrible sense of foreboding. She got into her car and took the way her parents normally drove to come to her house. The only way, really. Her heart started to race faster as she saw something that looked like flashing lights just over the rise. Yellow, red, blue, white. And sirens. She heard sirens. Traffic was at a complete stop, a line of cars in front of her that wasn’t budging even a fraction of an inch. Blood had rushed in Katie’s ears. She abandoned her car, just left it running in the line of cars, and ran the rest of the way up the hill. She crested the rise, and then her heart had come to a complete stop.

At least ten police cars, two fire trucks and four ambulances had been surrounding the scene. Flares were lit everywhere. There’d been a huge accident, a pileup of at least four vehicles. And at the very bottom of the tangle of metal had been a white sedan, smashed so flat it was nearly unrecognizable. But the insignia on the door told her exactly what car it was. It was her father’s company car. He’d owned his own business and he’d been driving the car that night. It had all been so surreal. She’d screamed. She didn’t know how she was heard over the sirens, but a police officer had looked directly at her. She ran down toward the pileup, screaming and screaming, tears pouring down her face. Before she reached the car the police officer had caught her by the shoulders. She hadn’t been able to hear a word he said. All she could hear was her own voice screaming, “My mom and dad, my sister—they’re in that car. I’ve got to get to them.” She’d fought to get to them, to help Julie and her parents. It had taken two police officers to hold her down while an EMT sedated her. The next morning she’d woken to learn that they were dead. And now she was on a boat, heading away from a life that had devastated her emotionally and physically. Maybe she should be moving on, but felt like the world was crushing down on her and there was no escape. ***** It was a good hour after the boat set sail, and the storm was worsening. Katie clung to the railing, having forced herself to remain above board. Downstairs in the cabin it was only worse, like the walls were closing in. She’d begun to feel claustrophobic, and 8

needed to be outside. At least up here she didn’t feel like throwing up with every toss of the waves. ***** A large wave tossed the yacht, causing Katie’s stomach to pitch. Something just didn’t seem right. Nothing was right. Clouds whorled high overhead, and the wind was rough enough to tear her long hair from her ponytail. The blue and white flags flying at the top of the yacht were flapping so wildly that one ripped loose and flew behind the ship like a bird caught in a downdraft. It dipped, dipped again, then plunged into the water. Someone shouted over a speakerphone for all passengers to get below deck. In Katie’s mind she knew she should follow the directions, but she found herself frozen, like an ice sculpture. She couldn’t move away from the railing, hypnotized by the angry water beating against the ship. Another huge wave swelled beneath the boat, lifting it high before releasing it and causing a sudden drop. Terror ripped through her so completely that she went even stiffer, completely unable to move. Saltwater sprayed her face and coated the sunglasses. She gripped the railing tighter. Den grabbed a railing on the cabin with one hand, keeping the woman tight against him with his other arm. But it was no use. But Den didn’t have time to think about his friend as the power of the wave drove him and the woman toward the yacht’s railing. He snatched at the metal and caught it one-handed, barely keeping them both from sliding under the cold bar and into the ocean. The woman’s terror was a palpable thing as she clung to him. Lightning flashed so close he smelled ozone and felt wet hair rise on his arms and his scalp. Thunder boomed loud enough to rattle his teeth. He raised his head, only to see the black swirling clouds becoming more intense above them. “Goddamn,” he said through gritted teeth as a monster wave rose up in the air like Thor’s hammer, ready to drive the boat deep beneath the surface of the ocean. Den did the only thing he could. He held the woman tight to him and waited for the storm’s fury to fall on them. Pain slammed into him and the woman cried out. His eyes, ears, mouth, nose—all filled with so much water he was suffocating from it. Vaguely he heard the screams of other passengers. Louder, much, much louder, came the crack of timbers, the screech of metal and the groan of a boat being ripped apart.

Chapter Two She moaned. Every part of her body ached. Especially her head. It throbbed as if her heart beat in her skull. Her head hurt so badly, she was afraid to open her eyes. What the hell had happened? Sunshine heated her eyelids and she felt sand coating her body. Her clothing was damp and sticky against her skin. The roar of the ocean, the lap of waves against the shore and the call of sea birds filled her ears. Apparently she was on a beach, probably passed out after partying way too much. Although she didn’t remember a party, so that didn’t make sense. She groaned again and decided she’d have to give in and open her eyes. She blinked, but the bright sun was too much for her sensitive eyes to bear. By the position of the sun it must be afternoon. She turned her face away from the sunlight, resting her cheek against the sand. And found herself looking into brilliant blue eyes. The eyes of the sexiest man she’d ever had the pleasure of viewing. He was lying beside her, his elbow in the sand and his head propped up on his palm. So far so good. “A little banged up, scratched and bruised, but other than that I think I’m okay.” He frowned. “No doubt you have a concussion.” She tried to push herself up to a sitting position and he let his hand drop away. Black spots appeared before her eyes and she felt a rush of nausea that almost caused her to vomit. “I think you’re right.” She relaxed back against the sand. “Maybe—maybe I’ll just lie here for a moment.” Den put his palm to her forehead, and she felt an instant sense of connection with the man. Questions kept trying to pop up in her mind, but her head hurt too badly to even begin to think about them. “I don’t think you have a fever,” he said, “but you’re warm from the sun.” He glanced over his shoulder, then back to her. “Mike and I are done with the shelter, but I was afraid to move you in case anything was broken.” “Really, I think I’m okay.” She’d like to trade her head in for a new one, but other than that she was certain she was fine.

The corner of his mouth curved into a smile as he moved his hand from her forehead and brushed his knuckles along her cheek. “What’s your name?” She shivered from the sensual touch, then frowned. Faces she didn’t recognize, scenes she didn’t remember. When she opened her eyes again she shook her head and felt sand sliding beneath her hair. “Nothing.” Den audibly took a deep breath and let it out. “It’ll come back to you. Just don’t push it.” He brushed strands of hair from her face. “We have to call you something for now. How about Sirena?” “Sirena?” She scrunched her nose. “Why that?” “Because you’re a Siren of the sea.” He smiled and she shivered as he continued to stroke her hair. “Something about you called to me the first time I saw you, and you came out of the sea with me. I can’t take anything right now.” Briefly Jenise explained to the nurse-practitioner about Katie being shipwrecked on an island, her memory loss and the shock she’d gone through when she’d heard her exhusband was on the island, obviously triggering her memories. “Take care of her, then have her escorted to the Orchid Suite,” Jenise said to the nurse. She gave one last look at Katie, tried a smile, then left the room. Katie remained rigid as the nurse practitioner examined her, holding back the urge to scream and tell the woman to get away from her. Katie answered questions in short clipped words, wanting to get out of that room as soon as possible. But the exam seemed to last forever. The nurse practitioner was an elegant black-haired woman with a name badge that read Cara, who wrapped a blanket around Sirena’s shoulders. “You’re in shock, and you need to see a specialist to deal with the trauma you’ve been through. That kind of memory loss—it’s something like a fugue state. I’d like to prescribe some anxiety meds until you can get to a specialist.” “No drugs.” Katie shook her head and pulled the blanket tighter around her shoulders. “Just get me to a room. I need to be by myself for awhile.”

She punched off the phone and slammed it onto her desk. “Charles ditched security. When she shut the door behind her, Katie leaned back against it and stared at the luxury suite, but barely saw what was around her. She couldn’t stop shaking. Couldn’t stop thinking. Intent on heading to the bathroom, she paused to glance back into the sitting room and saw two boxes sitting on the table.
