Belfast’s history stretches back to the bronze age, however, it was some 400 years ago that the city was properly established. During this period the economy was built on commercial imports and exports and Belfast became a bustling merchant town.
During the 18th Century the city ‘Béal Feirste’, which means sandy ford at the river mouth, blossomed into a commercial, industrial centre. Linen, rope-making, heavy-engineering and ship building thrived and by the 19th Century Belfast was the largest and most industrialised city in Ireland. A city that by 1912 had built and launched the famous RMS Titanic. However by 1969 tensions started to flair across the city and the subsequent conflict, more commonly known as the ‘Troubles’, along with the decline in the manufacturing industries, devastated the economy. It was only at the end of the 20th Century that a period of awakening began. Politicians started talking, industry and commerce improved and a confident and optimistic population voted for change. Since the Good Friday agreement Belfast has been reborn and a sense of pride, hope and faith has engulfed the people, who now enthusiastically welcome you to enjoy their city.

Antrim
Whether you want to indulge in some retail therapy, learn more about the past or simply enjoy visiting new attractions, Antrim is the place for you. Explore the ruins of Antrim Castle and meander through its impressive gardens, one of the last remaining 17th Century Anglo-Dutch water gardens, which host an ancient motte, a spectacular long canal and a unique parterre. The former coach house and stables of the Castle are now home to the popular Clotworthy Arts Centre. If you prefer to sample some natural wonders, start off at Antrim Lough Shore Park on the shores of Lough Neagh, the largest fresh water lake in the British Isles. While away a few hours enjoying a picnic, climb aboard for a boat trip on the Lough or just saunter along the river pathways, taking in the fantastic views. Following the western shoreline of the Lough, travel to World Of Owls at Randalstown, Northern Ireland’s only owl, bird of prey and exotic animal conservation education centre or travel south to the newly opened Clementsmount Fun Farm where you can cuddle young animals or enjoy pony riding, pedal go-karting & crazy golf. Pay a visit to Junction One International
Outlet and grab a bargain at one of the 60 individual outlets, housing high street giants, designer brands and international market leaders, all offering discounts of up to 60%. Can you afford to miss out? Add to the mix Antrim’s close proximity to Belfast International Airport and the ports of Larne and Belfast, some of the best sporting facilities in Northern Ireland, an outstanding array of hotels, guest houses and B&Bs and some fantastic eateries. Antrim is a must see destination.
did you know? Antrim town is over 1000 years old. According to Irish myth, giant Finn McCool created Lough Neagh when he scooped a handful of earth to hurl at a rival Scottish giant.
