How to expand a middle industry business complex 1n a contemporary form, was already proven by Baumschlager & Eberle in 1995 with the new showroom bu1ld1ng for the wood process1ng plant of Altenned 1n the Bavanan community of Hergatz. This wood constructiOn bu1ldmg clad w1th Sibenan larch, ever so gently f1t 1nto the slope, of wh1ch the arched facades act as an architectural analogy to the hilly landscape, counts these days as an exceptional example for contemporary commercial I industnal build1ng. This build1ng caused an entrepreneur of the same trade, to commiSSIOn the architects w1th the expans1on of his own firm. The new build1ng for the S1rch company is as well located 1n the 'AIIgiiu', a German prealp1ne reg1on. Similarly embedded in a soft slope, the build1ng presents itself this time not as a free-form sculpture but as a linear stretched cubical block. Ne1ther does 1t act as an eye catcher along the road, rather 1t is more hidden on a slope of a compound among other buildings of residential, light industnal and warehousing nature. An unobstructed v1ew of the buildmg IS only offered from the East. from where one perceives the he1ght of two stories. The two levels of the wood structure are Juxtaposed by different treatment of the facades. thus ach1ev1ng a stylistic tension : While the lower level, set mto the ground and propped against it on three s1des by mass1ve concrete retaining walls, is clad with translucent panels, the glazed long side of the upper level IS wrapped w1th repetitiVe nbs of larch wood. Th1s wrapper preva1ls as well on the west s1de, into which a steel, matte-black gateway w1th a concrete stair has been cut 1n Because the ground floor IS slightly elevated, it appears to hover above 1ts support1ng structure. The use of natural light in the cant1levenng ma1n floor IS supported by two big Windows, which open to the surroundings on e1ther of the front s1des. Wntten by Wolfgang Jean Stock

All demands toward a contemporary dwelling can be summarized by the concept of 'optlm1zat1on'. It thus comprises the unity of an inexpensive construction phase, 1ncreased quality of use and low energy consumptiOn dunng construction as well as during the operatiOn of a res1dent1al building. Essent1al prerequiSites are a good rat1o of exterior surfaces to the total cubic volume, opt1miz1ng the structural system, using prefabricated and lightweight facade elements as well as interior fin1shes w1th a drywall system. Th1s approach 1S expressed as a pilot project by the V78 res1dential untt on the fringes of the City of Bludenz The dec1s1on to employ a compact build1ng volume root in a simulation dur1ng the des1gn phase. The energy opt1m1zed sk1n of the building us1ng h1ghly Insulated w1ndows, facades and roofing materials, IS complemented by specialized environmental control systems. Controlled ventilation comb1ned w1th heat recovery and preheating fresh a1r by the means of geothermal collectors, reduces the total heating consumption to the half of a conventional build1ng and represents in addition to a minimal system using heat exchange the only source of warm1ng the building. In comb1natton w1th the long1tudmal carport the residential un1t forms an asymmetrical

On the ground floor the apartments are accessed by a single loaded corridor, 1n the upper floors the apartments pierce a central sta1rwell. An emphas1s 1n terms of des1gn IS placed upon this linear building by an extenor glazed sta1rcase, wh1ch g1ves access to two comer apartments. Wntten by Wolfgang Jean Stock

Positioning, shape and use of this building relate to tts Stte on a much frequented thoroughfare of a village. Stmilar to other small communittes the scale of the buildings has changed drasttcally dunng the last decades. Thts place ts characterized today by little demanding large buildings, between older butldtngs whtch have been encapsulated. The architects have answered to these spectal condtttons 1n a two folded manner : They cont1nue the new scale, but they elevate their building w1th its unmtstakable cub1c organization and its design of the facade from the otherw1se dtffuse appearance of the street front. The front part of the building, oriented to the public, tS occupted by the facilities of the bank. whereas the back part. oriented to the garden. contains apartments of different stze and patterns. The bank which was formerly housed tn some nondescript store recetved an attracttve archttectural vts1t1ng card by the means of the new buildtng, whtch ts stted perpendtcular to the road . The larch wood latttce works as a memorable stgn, wtth tts honzontally mov1ng elements. whtch wrap consequently around the glass cube. The lattice serves not only the purpose of protectton from sun and s1ght. but also lends the bu1ld1ng a large degree of homogeneity. The flextble moving elements yield a Simultaneously multtlayered and attracttve tmage of the facade. The wood latttce originates the chang1ng play of light and shadow and thus shapes the tntenor spaces as well. espectally the multi-functtonal hall on the fourth floor, which the bank rents to clients at tts own cost. The onent& tton toward a servtce bank ts already formulated on the ftrst floor. where the open client area ts des1gned tn an almost livtng room manner- wtthout the usual teller booths. The ground floor conta1ns the car park1ng space, wh1ch can also be used for other funct1ons, along w1th the ancillary spaces, a small study and an additional bathroom so that a guest could also be accommodated here The liv1ng area IS at first floor level One could almost speak here of a s1ngle room concept as the spaces flow 1nto one another Only the bedrooms are separated. the kitchen and bathroom are placed tn an adJ01n1ng cube. In th1s way the maJor spat1al configuration IS cleanly and clearly developed and IS not overlaid by service spaces. The tact that the architecture concentrates on the view of the lake 1s, g1ven the favourable nature of the s1te. self-explanatory. The double skin facade concept is most Interesting. It resulted from consider& ttons on how the butld1ng should relate to outdoor space, but IS also a result of the necess1ty for screen1ng and sun protection. You can certa1nly look out from 1ns1de a s1mple glass box but you can also see 1nto 1t. The prefabncated glass box. wh1ch was erected 1n a week, now stands behtnd a grid of t1mber elements made on s1te. The blades of th1s cladd1ng are relatively dense at ground floor level, further up the bu1ld1ng they open up and placed at slightly vary1ng angles. The entire architectural tension evident 1n th1s small house. both externally and Internally, IS reflected in these two facades and the1r h1ghly d1fferent matenal qualit1es It seems almost like a statement and refutation, an inherent bu1lt contradiCtion but one wh1ch IS obv1ously easy to l1ve with it Wrttten by Liesbeth Waechter-Bohm

The house is characterized by 1ts extremely exposed s1tuat1on at the IntersectiOn of Lake Constance and Bregenzerwald : It s 1nhab1tants enJOY a v1ew over nearly the ent1re prov1nce of Vorarlberg. It was obv1ous that
1n
such a locat1on
the architects must refra1n from any form of ostentation or showmg-off For th1s reason. the pos1t10n of the house 1s essentially reticent and h1ghly deliberate regarding 1ts relationship w1th the surroundings and the nearby forest . Moreover, the architects of the house styled the terrace requested by the owner as a large cantilevered projection which. however, is not a predominant architectural element. The program fully corresponds to the conventional perception of a detached fam1ly home for a couple and the1r two children. However, the special feature lies rn the s1tuat1on of the burld1ng on a very steep slope overlook1ng Lake Constance. The v1s1tor enters the bu1ld1ng at the second storey, rn order to ascend or

The building had to be enlarged smce three prev1ously separate subs1d1anes moved together and fused the1r corporate organ1sat1on. The existmg parent company building was left largely unchanged and rece1ved only a new front made of larch wooden panels. A new object hous1ng the product1on hall and the test1ng department was placed next to th1s one-storey bu1ld1ng and. as a third element, a bndge was built over both bu1ld1ngs, a support1ng structure earned by three pa1rs of pillars accommodating the admm1strat10n . Th1s configuration created a courtyard w1th three s1des that serves as a place to store large Objects. The differentiated formal solut1on on the facade delightfully expresses the vanous utilit1es the bu1ld1ng has : glass and concrete charactense the left w1ng of the building"'"""""'""''·'"""'..,'"m"''. a wooden sk1n covers the nght part and the administrative section above carries a bnght orange red cloak made of three-ply plates.
