Introduction In making this collection I spent many, many hours trying to unravel the complexities of Larry Niven’s work. I stumbled my way through many causes of confusion and chaos! Firstly – the names of his books. Much of his work is published under different names; many books have been combined in omnibus form and given yet another set of names; some books have the same name as a short story – and do not necessarily contain this story or expand on it. Some of the books also share a name with a whole series – so others are listed under that name as well. Secondly – sorting out which book goes where and in which series. Most of his series are known by more than one title; some books feature in more than one series; often on half of an omnibus belongs to one series and the other half belongs to another. Thirdly – many of the files found online are misspelled, named after the first line of the book or simply given the wrong name altogether! Fourthly - every different site seems to disagree over which book belongs where, and how the series interlock and what internal chronology or timeline is for each universe/world. Lastly – the profusion of co-authored books and shared universes where different authors can contribute solo books as part of the series just add to the chaos. As I valiantly sorted through all of this chaos, I took lots of notes to help me remember things like what order to read the books, what each different universe is about etc. I thought it would be worth sharing them so everyone else didn’t have to fight the same battle. I’ve also The various guides and lists are scattered through each subfolder, mainly as plain text files with the odd pdf. I also pulled them all together in this booklet, so I could put them into EPUB format – and have a bit of fun making a nice picture for the front page.

DREAM PARK - READERS GUIDE Dream Park is a futuristic amusement park using holograms and other advanced technologies to entertain customers, including live-action role-players. Dream Park, The Barsoom Project and The California Voodoo Game follow security Chief Alex Griffin as he attempts to solve various mysteries set in the park. The other stories in this series have only a peripheral connection. Saturn's Race is a prequel to Achilles' Choice; both involve young adults technologically "upgrading" their bodies in an effort to join the world's ruling elite.

THE MAGIC GOES AWAY AKA WARLOCKS ERA - A Readers Guide The Magic Goes Away is a fantasy short story written by Larry Niven in 1976, and later expanded to a novella of the same name which was published in 1978. While these works were not the first in the "Magic Universe" or "Warlock" series, they marked a turning point after the 1973 oil crisis and Niven's subsequent transformation of the series into an allegory for a modern-day energy crisis; the novella was also the first work longer than a short story. The setting was later used as a backdrop for the Golden Road series of full-length novels, The Burning City (2000) and its sequel, Burning Tower (2005), which were co-written with Jerry Pournelle.
STORIES - In chronological order I have indicated where the stories can be found in this collection, if I have them. * Chicxulub * Not Long Before the End (In "All the Myriad Ways" and indivdual stories) * What Good is a Glass Dagger (In "The Flight of the Horse") * Talisman (In "Limits") * The Magic Goes Away - novel * The Wishing Game * The Lion in His Attic (In "Limits" & individual stories) * The Portrait of Daryanree the King * Rhinemaidens * The Burning City - Golden Road novel * Burning Tower - Golden Road novel * Boomerang
Recommended Reading Order Reading the stories in order of publication will avoid spoilers. That aside, "Not Long Before the End," "What Good Is a Glass Dagger?," The Magic Goes Away, and "The Wishing Game" form a continuing story, and should be read in that order. The Burning City is followed by its sequel, Burning Tower. Characters from "The Lion in His Attic" later appear in The Burning City, although this continuity does not appear important. "Rhinemaidens" is a sequel to "The Lion in His Attic." The other stories can be read in any order.
THE MAN-KZIN BOOKS - Readers Guide n.b unless otherwise specified, Larry Niven is the author
PART ONE – Introduction The first story set in the Man-Kzin Wars, The Warriors (1966), was one of Niven's earliest published stories and one of the first of what would become his Known Space series. Niven did not consider himself qualified to write war stories; therefore, although a number of his later stories referenced the Man-Kzin Wars, he never actually showed them. However, there was a large fan demand for stories covering the conflict, and a number of his author friends had shown interest in writing tales set in the timeframe. Niven therefore allowed the ManKzin Wars to become a shared universe, starting with the 1988 release of The Man-Kzin Wars.

MOTIES - Readers Guide Suggested reading order: The Mote in God's Eye should be read before its sequel, The Gripping Hand. "Reflex" tells of events leading up to Mote, but it is not necessary to read them to understand the latter. Other than that, the stories may be read in any order. ________________________________
THE STATE – Readers Guide Contains the Integral Tree books.
Although some people cite "The Integral Tree" as a Known Space novel, I have not included this trilogy in the Known Space folder. These books don't appear in either of the two Known Space chronologies I used as a reference, or in the Date of Publication lisitngs I have found. They are also not listed as Known Space novels in the Wikipedia articles.
Publications Originally included the novelettes "Rammer", "Down and Out" and "Children of the State". These have been incorporated into the novel "World Out Of time" - chapters 1-2 (revised from "Rammer" and "Down and Out"); chapters 3-9 (orig. "The Children of the State") * World Out Of Time 1976 * The Intergral Trees 1983 * The Smoke Ring 1987 * The Kiteman 1990 (SS found in N-Space collection)
The State Series Chronology * The Integral Trees * The Smoke Ring * The Kiteman * A World Out of Time
Suggested reading order ________________________ The Integral Trees, The Smoke Ring, and "The Kiteman" should be read in that order. A World Out of Time may be read at any time.
SHORT FICTION - Reader's Guide Almost all of Niven's stories have been published in an anthology. However things can become very confusing as stories often appear in more than one anthology, and some of the anthologies bear the same name as some of the stories. To make things even more intersting most of the anthologies contain stories from more than one setting. I hope this list of the contents and settings found in the anthologies in this collection proves helpful. To keep confusion as low as possible, I have only included anthologies I've been able to get hold of.

Settings include Known Space, The Léshy Circuit, and The Magic Goes Away world. * "All the Myriad Ways" * "Passerby" * "For a Foggy Night" * "Wait it Out" * "The Jigsaw Man" * "Not Long Before the End" * "Unfinished Story #1" * "Unfinished Story #2" * "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex" * "Exercise in Speculation: The Theory and Practice of Teleportation" * "The Theory and Practice of Time Travel" * "Inconstant Moon" (Made into an Outer Limits episode) * "What Can You Say About Chocolate Covered Manhole Covers?" * "Becalmed in Hell"
The Flight of the Horse - 1971 "Flash Crowd" is part of the Teleportation group of stories. The other stories are all concerned with Niven's unique perspective on time travel, except for the last story which is set in his The Magic Goes Away fantasy world. These stories were all published again in some editions of Rainbow Mars. * The Flight of the Horse (original title Get a Horse!) * Leviathan * Bird in the Hand * There's a Wolf in My Time Machine * Death in a Cage * Flash Crowd
