• 3 Прочитайте текст вслух и переведите его. My name is Sveta Ivanova. I am 18 years old. I was born in Volgograd. Two years ago our family moved to Rostov-on - Don where I live now with my parents. My family is not very large. We are only four: my mother, my younger sister and me. My father is a doctor, he works at a hospital. My mother is a housewife. She has much work to do about the house. My younger sister is a pupil of the ninth form. Her name is Alla. She does well at school and gets only good and excellent marks. Alla wants to become an economist. Our family live in a new nine-storeyed block of flats in Pushkin Street. Our flat is on the second floor. It is very comfortable and has all modern conveniences: central heating, electricity, gas, running water, rubbish chute and telephone. I studied at school in Rostov. Last year I finished school number fifty. We studied many different subjects at school. My favourite subject was History. I always did well at school and learned with great interest. I also attended sport sections and subject circles. I had many friends there. Now I am a first-year student of the correspondence department. I study at the Economics Faculty of Rostov State University and work at a plant as a secretary. I attend lectures and practical classes. At the end of each term we take examinations and credit tests. So I must work hard to pass exams successfully. My working day begins early in the morning. On week-days I usually get up at 7 o’clock. I make my bed and do my morning exercises. Then I go to the bathroom where I clean my teeth and wash myself. If I have enough time I take a cold and hot shower. After having a bath I go back to my room where I dress myself and brush my hair. In ten minutes I am ready for breakfast. It may be a cup of tea or coffee and a sandwich. After breakfast I go to work. I don’t want to be late, that’s why I leave the house at 7.30. As I live not very far from the plant it takes me half an hour to get there. I usually get there by bus or tram. At noon I have a break and go to the plant canteen to have dinner. My work is over at 5 p.m. In the evening I do my homework. Sometimes I go to the library to get ready for my practical classes or to write a report. As a rule I have no free time on my week-days. At about eleven at night I go to bed.

Rostov University was evacuated from Warsaw. Its history goes back to the beginning of the nineteenth century when Tsar Alexander I founded a University in Warsaw in 1817. He had some special reasons for that. He wished to reinforce his power and create an outpost of Russian culture in Poland. So he created a centre of education in Poland. But it was not only the centre of education, as the revolutionaryminded students led an active struggle against the monarchy. And in 1831 the tsarist
government had to close it down. The University was opened again only in 1869. In July 1915 Warsaw University was evacuated to Rostov-on--Don because of the imperialist war of 1914. At present Rostov University is a leading scientific and educational centre in the South of Russia. There are 11 faculties at the University. They are: the Biology and Pedology faculty, the Economics faculty, the Chemistry faculty, the GeologyGeography faculty, the History faculty, the Law faculty, the faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, the Philology faculty, the Philosophy faculty, the Physics faculty and the Psychology faculty. Rostov State University has day, evening and correspondence departments. The course of studies at the University is divided into 5 academic years at the day department and 6 years at the evening and correspondence departments. The training scheme includes academic subjects, social sciences, professional courses and foreign languages. During the academic year the students are delivered lectures on compulsory and optional courses. Seminars are held on some subjects. The students are to attend laboratories and practicals. Once a week both junior and senior students attend the language laboratory for individual oral practice. The academic year is divided into 2 terms. At the end of each term the students take tests and midterm exams. At some faculties they are to write specialist essays. If the student passes the examination the teacher ( lecturer ) enters the mark in the student’s record ( credit ) book. Students who make good progress at their studies get grants, top students get scholarships. At the end of the course of studies the students take final exams and write a graduation paper or project. Graduates get a degree or honour degrees. After graduating from the University you may apply for a postgraduate course of studies. The social life of the University is characterized by the activity of many students. They go in for sports and take part in sport competitions. London is situated on the river Thames. The city is very old. It has more than 20 centuries old history. Traditionally, it is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End. They are very different from each other. The City is the oldest part of London, its financial and business centre. Numerous banks, offices and firms are concentrated here, including the Bank of England, the Stock Exchange and the Old Bailey. Few people live in the City but over a million come to work here. Two masterpieces are situated within the City: St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower of London. St. Paul’s Cathedral was built in the 17th century by Christopher Wren. The Tower of London was built in the 11th century. It was used as a fortress, a palace and a prison. Now it’s a museum. Westminster is the aristocratic official part of London. It includes Buckingham Palace where the Queen lives and the Houses of Parliament stretching for nearly 1000 feet along the north bank of the Thames. The Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament is famous for its big hour bell, known as “Big Ben”. Westminster Abbey is the place where coronation of nearly all kings and queens has taken place. Many of them are buried here as well as some other famous people of the country (G. Chaucer, Tennyson, Newton, Ch. Dickens, T. Hardy, R. Kipling, etc.). The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. It is a symbol of wealth and luxury. The best hotels, restaurants, shops, clubs, parks and houses are situated there. English aristocracy lives in this region. One of the busiest streets in the West End is Oxford Street. There are many various shops in it which attract customers from different countries of the world. Trafalgar Square is the geographical centre of London. It was named in the memory of Admiral Nelson’s victory at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The tall Nelson Column stands in the middle of the square. Opposite the Nelson Monument is the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. They contain the finest art collections in the world. Not far from the National Gallery is the British Museum famous for its rich library (about 7,000.000 books). The East End is an industrial district of London. There are many factories and the Port of London there. It is very important to the country’s commerce. The region is densely populated by working class families. Old residents of the East End are proud to be called cockneys which means true Londoners, hereditary inhabitants of the area. • 1 Запомните следующие слова и словосочетания: столица [k pit l] capital (n) район [‘distrikt] district (n) дворец [‘p lis] palace (n) [‘r i l] royal (a) королевский [‘f :tris] fortress крепость [k ‘ idr l] cathedral собор [hi’redit ri] hereditary потомственный [‘ma:st pi:s] masterpiece шедевр [‘v ri s] various различные [wel ] wealth богатство the Bank of England Английский Банк

THE US MOST IMPORTANT CITIES WASHINGTON The capital of the USA, Washington, is situated on the left bank of the Potomac River in the District of Columbia (D. C. ). The D. C. is outside the jurisdiction of the states and completely independent of them. The nation’s first president, George Washington, selected the site for the District and laid the corner-stone of the Capitol building, where Congress meets. The Capitol was built on Jennkine Hill (or the Capitol Hill). It is the highest building of Washington. The regulation does not allow to build houses taller than the Capitol in Washington. The residential place of the President is in the White House, one of the World’s best known and most beautiful mansions. Government is, of course, Washington’s main business, although some “clean” high-technology and light industries have recently been set up in the surrounding areas. Tourism , too, is of major importance. Visitors come to Washington by planes and by trains. The planes land on Washington’s two airfields: the National and Friendship Airports. The city’s pride is the Union Railway Station. Twenty train tracks enter the station on the upper level and twelve on the lower. It is so big that it can hold an army of fifty thousand men. Today Washington, in the political sense, is the centre of the nation, although its population is only 2.8 million. It is not the largest city in the country for it cannot be compared in size with the cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Fransisco, Boston and New York. NEW YORK With a population of over 8 million, New York is the largest city in the United States, a great seaport and the heart of the country’s financial and business activity, as well as the nation’s cultural centre. New York is situated around the mouth of the Hudson River. It has five boroughs (Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island).
Most business is centred in Manhattan Island, especially in Wall Street, wellknown all over the world as the busiest street in the USA. The whole area of Manhattan is very small, that’s why sky-scrapers were invented here. There are two more world-famous streets-Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Broadway is known as “theatre-land”, which presents opera, concerts, dance and drama by such worldclass companies as New York Philarmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, and the New York City Ballet. Fifth Avenue is the great shopping, hotel and club centre. New York is also famous for the Statue of Liberty, the United Nation Building, Empire State Building, Colombia [k ‘l mbi ] University, City Hall, New York Public Library and others. • 1 Запомните следующие слова и словосочетания: although (adv) [ :l ou] хотя; несмотря на то, что borough (n) [‘b r ] один из пяти районов Нью-Иорка compare (v) [k m’p ] сравнивать corner-stone (n) [‘k :n stoun] краеугольный камень invent (v) [in’vent] изобретать, делать открытие land (v) [l nd] делать посадку, приземляться mansion (n) [‘m n n] особняк mouth (n) [mau ] устье (реки) sky-scraper (n) [‘skai, skreip ] небоскреб site (n) [sait] местоположение surrounding (a) [s ‘raundin] близлежащий, соседний track (n) [tr k] железнодорожный путь • 2 Отработайте произношение некоторых географических названий: [p ‘toum k’riv ] the Potomac River [‘distrikt v k ‘l mbi ] the District of Columbia [‘h dsn’ riv ] the Hudson River [m n’h t n] Manhattan [br nks] the Bronx [‘bruklin] Brooklyn [‘k pitl] Capitol • 3 Прочитайте следующие интернациональные слова и постарайтесь понять их значение: [dzu ris’dik n] jurisdiction [,regju’lei n] regulation [‘biznis] business [tek’n l dzi] technology [‘tu rizm] tourism [‘vizit ] visitor [‘stei n] station [milj n] million [fai’n n l] financial [‘k lt r l] cultural

It is situated on the high bank of the river Don, at a distance of 36 km from the Asov Sea. The city was founded in 1749 at the Temernic River. The first building was the custom-house built by Russia to control import and export trade. 12 years later a fortress of a remarkable structure was constructed at the place which is now Kirov Square to protect southern borders of Russia. The fortress was one the military bases of the Russian Army at the Azov seashore during the Russian-Turkish war. The famous Russian General Suvorov visited the fortress in 1788. In honour of this visit one of the streets of Rostov is called Suvorov Street. Little by little a city grew up around the fort, named after a Russian Saint Dmitry Rostovsky. Thanks to its geographical location the city developed rapidly. In 1806 Emperor Alexander I added “-on-Don” to the city’s name to distinguish it from ancient Russian town not far from Moscow that was also named Rostov. At present the population of the city is more than a million. Rostov-on-Don is a big industrial centre with many plants and factories which produce chemicals, paints, musical instruments, drinks, diary products, textiles, clocks and many other goods.
