ные несколькими судами. Судя по виду кильватерных струй,
одной широкой и нескольким небольшим, можно было ре шить, что прошло одно крупное судно и несколько торпед
ных катеров. Поскольку эти суда следовали на юг, «Эмден)}
пошел на восток, увеличив скорость, чтобы побыстрее ми новать морские пути между Вейхайвеем и Шанхаем. Хотя
война не была объявлена, иностранные корабли могли со общить о присутствии «Эмдена)} в этих водах. Как Мюллер выяснил позднее, направлявшаяся на юг из Вейхайвея анг лийская эскадра прошла прямо перед ним.

го боевого корабля. Хотя его батарея не впечатляла, высо кая скорость «Эмдена» в двадцать четыре узла превышала
скорость большинства торговых кораблей, которые он мог встретить в Индийском океане. Она также превосходила

щения, что заметили облако дыма. Наконец они захватят грузовое судно. Уже пора. Командир корабля приказал ру левому стоять рядом, но, к разочарованию всех, это был японский пароход филиппин о-австралийской компании.
Мюллер оказался в щекотливой ситуации. Это было

вать. С тяжелым сердцем он позволил кораблю идти даль ше. Он почувствовал себя еще хуже, подозревая, что япон цы не узнали в «Эмдене» немецкий крейсер. Преимущество
было бы на его стороне. Как раз перед наступлением темноты, когда «Эмдею> проходил пролив у Амбона у южного подхода к Молукк ским островам, крейсер заметил огни двух пароходов. По
скольку это вероятно были голландские каботажные суда, «Эмден» отошел с пути. Следовало предпринимать все
меры, чтобы незамеченным войти в Индийский океан. Там нужно действовать абсолютно неожиданно.

течение дня были проведены подготовительные работы, что бы на следующее утро взять на борт уголь. Мюллер надеял ся найти корабль «Танненфельс» с пятью тысячами тонн хорошего угля на борту, поджидающий его в проливе Ну са-Беси. Запасы на «Маркоманнии» были ценным резер вом, которым следовало

Пять тысяч тонн было большим количеством, но оно не продлится вечно в голодные для котлов месяцы. Даже хотя
крейсер шел с большой экономией, потребление угля оста валось огромным.
Их опыту у Ангаура предстояло повториться. На рас свете, когда «Эмден» шел к проливу, все взгляды фокуси
ровались Jla горизонте. Но угольщика нигде не было видно. «Танненфельс» прогнали из нейтральных вод голландские

вагонов в день.
Запасы «Эмдена» включали величественное стадо из шести 'волов и двух свиней; несколько овец плавали по мо
рям на «Маркоманнии». Ранним утром паровой катер и шлюпка, вооруженные пулеметом на случай атаки тузем
цев, были отправлены на берег нарезать фураж для скота. Для выполнения этого задания вызвались многие волонте

шенности и дым поднимался от вулканов в ясное голубое небо. Находясь в центре этого естественного великолепия, моряки «Эмдена» сожалели о том, что началась война.
Если бы не она, то их корабль раньше или позже остановил ся бы в этом регионе. И на самом деле планировалось пла вание в голландскую Вест-Индию.
Везде вокруг лежали острова, многие из них заселен
ные. Как легко можно заметить и опознать крейсер! Как легко послания могут уйти к англичанам! Но опасных про
ходов нельзя было избежать и во время них на корабле ца рила особая атмосфера по

торыми обменивались голландские боевые корабли. Сиам
ская l2 станция из Сингоры на английском объявляла всему миру, что захвачены Льеж и Намюр. Это было встречно ли
'кованием на «Эмдене ». Ночью одинокий корабль прошел мимо Тигриных ост ровов, а по пути по голландскому радио поймали сообще
ние об объявлении войны Японией. Теперь в войну против Германии и Австро-Венгрии вступили четыре мировые дер жавы и несколько Балканских государств. По радио моря ки узнали несколько дополнительных деталей: француз
ское правительство перебазировалось в Бордо, а рядом с Танненбергом продолжается кровавое сражение. Значит, немецкие солдаты сражаются с врагом по всем фронтам.
Все на «Эмдене» надеялись снова вскоре поучаствовать в
боевой операции. Пока они не видели ни облака дыма. Ка залось, словно суда бегут от немецкого крейсера, легендар
ный захват которым «Рязани» уже давно облетел мир. Ни кто не знал местонахождение «Эмдена ».

боевой части наблюдения и связи сообщил Мюллеру о при сутствии боевого корабля где-то поблизости. I1редполо жительно, это был голландский корабль. ((Эмден» подхо дил к острову с юга. На северо-востоке находился еще один
небольшой остров, между островами имелся узкий пролив. Крейсеру удалось по нему пройти. Он медленно развернул
ся налево, чтобы обогнуть северо-восточную оконечность острова и зайти в залив, открывающийся к северу. Там они
должны были встретиться с угольщиком ((Оффенбахом». Но теперь за участком суши ((Эмден» заметил направляю
щийся к нему боевой корабль.

лей в сражении. Если это корабль противника, то ситуация на самом деле серьезная. Было невозможно уйти с его пути.
На первый взгляд расстояние между двумя судами, самое
большее, составляло три тысячи метров. Это был голланд ский корабль. Моряки ((Эмдена» оставались рядом с ору диями.
((Эмден» еще больше повернулся налево, в то время как
голландец, береговое охранное судно «Тромп», шло прямо и приближалось к носу ((Эмдена». Затем оно повернулось вправо и последовало за «Эмденом» в северный залив ост
рова Taha-ДжампеЙя. Там немецкий крейсер увидел судно-угольщик и решил,
что это «Оффенбах», но при приближении экипаж с разо чарованием понял, что это голландский пароход ((Бата
вия», угольщик для «Тромпа». Это был первый раз, когда

Оба боевых корабля подозрительно наблюдали друг за другом, когда бросали якорь в заливе. Вскоре к ним присое динилась «МаркоманниЯ». «ТРОМП» послал офицера с ви зитом вежливости на ( со всей тщательностью го товили паровой катер, который пойдет к голландцам. Ни
кто не хотел опозорить свой корабль. Экипаж даже надел парадную форму. Мюллер переправился на голландский
корабль на своем чистеньком щеголеватом катере. Там коман дир корабля сообщил ему, что поскольку ему показалось,
будто «Эмден» выбрал залив для перегрузки угля, он от правил «Оффенбах» прочь, приказав сопроводить уголь щик в нейтральные воды за трехмильной зоной. В то время, как он и его офицеры сочувствовали трудному положению
немцев, у голландцев тем не менее были строгие указания соблюдать нейтральную позицию. Нидерланды разрешали судам воюющих наций проводить операции по пере грузке угля в голландских водах в течение двадцати четырех часов

«Эмдена», присоединиться к голландским коллегам за круж кой пива.
На «Эмдене» первой реакцией на предпринятый гол
ландцами шаг была злость. Их корабль потерял возмож ность загрузиться углем. В тот момент уголь им требовался больше, чем сочувствие, а удивительно спокойный залив Тана-Джампейя был идеальным для загрузки ценного топ лива. Но, с другой стороны, следовало понимать позицию
голландцев. Что было делать маленькой стране Голландии? Разве более могущественная Япония не бросала жадные взгляды на голландские владения? Естественно, Голландии
требовалось избегать того, что покажется Японии малей шим жестом доброй воли по отношению к Германии. Гол
ландия не должна была открыто пренебрегать правилами,
88 регулирующими нейтральность. И, самое главное, ей сле
довало избегать любой ситуации, которая может вызвать
искушение у других захватить богатую голландскую Вест Индию. Поэтому теперь Мюллеру приходилось пересмат ривать свои планы. Вполне может подвернуться шанс тайно
загрузиться углем в голландских водах. Тогда «Эмден» все
еще оставит за собой право одной загрузки углем в трехме сячный период, дозволенной голландским правительством.
«Эмден» и «Маркоманния» незамедлительно подняли
якорь и «Тромп» последовал их примеру. Когда боевые ко рабли проходили мимо друг друга, произошел дружеский обмен приветствиями. Немецкие корабли повернули на се веро-запад, взяв ложный курс, чтобы обмануть голланд
ский корабль на тот случай, если он захочет сообщить об их местонахождении противнику. «Эмден» шел так быстро, что «Маркоманния», несмотря на свои четырнадцать уз
лов, едва ли могла держаться рядом. Соблюдая правила нейтральности, «Тромп

следовал за ними до границы
трехмильной зоны и чуть дальше, затем резко повернул на
право. Как только «ТРОМП» исчез из виду" немецкие суда изменили курс на зюйд-вест.
Вечером было перехвачено незашифрованное голланд ское послание. В нем упоминал ось присутствие белого тор педоносца с четырьмя трубами недалеко от Батавии, очень возможно английского. К счастью, ночи были ясными и лунными, поэтому ни один боевой корабль не сможет неза меченным подобраться к «Эмдену» и атаковать.

~и. На английских крейсерах имелось или две, или четыре
грубы, а не три, как на «Эмдене ». Старпом Мюке вспомнил идею, высказанную энсином Фикентшером в Южно-Китай скомморе.
Не повредит, если «Эмден » замаскируется перед тем,
как заходить в узкий пролив ясной ночью. Не теряя време !lИ, принесли снасти, куски парусины шириной около двух м:етров, которыми покрывали застеленную линолеумом па
~убу во время загрузки угля. Моряки использовали их, что5ы соорудить подобие дымовой трубы перед первой насто IlЩеЙ.
Теперь, если вражеский эсминец заметит «Эмден », то IIримет его или за английский, или за японский крейсер.

пошел к нему, «Маркоманния)} и «Понтопорос)} следовали за ним так быстро, как позволяли их технические возмож-
111 ности. Приближаясь, они заметили типичную белую судо вую надстройку пассажирского корабля. Синий флаг анг лийского торгового судна развивался на корме. Возможно,
это был еще один корабль для пере возки войск. «Эмден» выпустил предупредительный выстрел и поднял герман ский флаг, но предупреждение не отправлять радиосигна
лы на этот раз не требовалось. На мачте парохода не было антенны.
И снова лейтенант Ааутербах и его абордажная коман да взяли дело в свои руки. Вскоре он передал, что их новый
трофей мостью
- это английское грузовое судно «Аоват» вмести 6012 регистровых валовых тонн, построенное в 1911
году и принадлежащее судоходной компании «Дж. Уа в
рак». Корабль также был оборудован для перевозки войск индийским правительством и находился на пути из Каль
кутты в Бомбей. Его судьба тоже была предрешена.
У экипажа парохода оказалось достаточно времени, чтобы собрать личные вещи, поскольку перегрузка товаров на «Маркоманнию» закончилась только после заката. Все
время «Эмдею> оставался опасно близко к «Аовату», нос
крейсера чуть не пробивал корму парохода. После того, как абордажная команда открыла кингстоны, шлюпки «Эмдена» подняли назад на борт. По «Аовату» выстрели ли, и ему потребовалось столько же времени, сколько и предшественнику, чтобы затонуть. Спустилась тьма, и «Эм
ден» оставил погружающийся в воду захваченный корабль. И снова царило ликование, но капитан «Инда» не участво
вал в проявлении эмоций. Он с раскрытыми объятиями при ветствовал коллегу с «Аовата », радуясь тому, что у него есть товарищ по несчастью.
На этот раз лейтенант Ааутербах получил приказ вер нуться на «Эмден» только с газетами. Они были бесценны ми источниками информации, даже хотя давали односто ронние версии успехов союзных сил и поражен ий немцев.
Это не удивило никого на «Эмдене»: английская пресса кормила читателей подобными выдумками с начала войны.
Объяснение последнего развития событий экипажу в свои
112 руки взял старпом. Достали и вывесили большую карту Германии и граничащих с нею стран, затем проследили по
ней описанные в прессе операции. Было нелегко решить, что представлять личному составу и как. Новости сильно
искажались и не имели смысла: большие немецкие армии уничтожены, они везде проваливались; где бы они ни появ лялись, начинались голод и революции, генералы армии со
вершали самоубийства; кронпринц убит, император ранен; Бавария отколол ась от Германской империи и всякая по
добная чушь. Аейтенант фон Мюке подготовил отчет, избе гая самой откровенной лжи, пытаясь представить правди
вую картину того, что произошло к этому времени. Боевой дух экипажа пострадает, если сообщения из дома постоян
но будут приводить В уныние, но с другой стороны, содер жание газет нельзя было скрывать от людей. Когда кто-то из офицеров читал сообщения в кают-компании другим, рядом обычно находились вестовые, и они подслушивали. Если получится несоответствие между этими сообщениями и официальным заявлением командования, то у экипажа появится вполне определенное чувство, что новости приу
крашиваются с целью подсластить горькую пилюлю. Этого
следовало избежать любой ценой. Поэтому Мюке решил прочитать газеты слово в слово и оставить комментарии на
потом. И очень удачно в первые дни августа пришла теле
грамма, раскрывающая метод подачи сообщений агентст вом «Рейтер». В ней говорилось: «Официально сообщаем: не вызывает сомнения, что «Эмден» затонул во время сра
жения с «Аскольдом~.» Это развеяло все сомнения матро
сов в том, что сообщения могут быть сильно преувеличены. На все, что в дальнейшем передаст «Рейтер », следовало смотреть скептически.
Затем была представлена карта Германии и то, как анг лийская пресса поделила страну. Франция протянулась до
Весер-Верра и границы Баварии. Дания добралась до Вис мара и включала Виттенберг, Магдебург, Гановер и Бремен. Англия проглотила Ольденбург. Территория к востоку от
Эльбы, включая Саксонию, стала русскими владениями. Ба-
113 вария стала независимоЙ. Только небольшая область, Ту рингия, все еще существовала, как Германия. Члены экипа
жа, родившиеся там, держали головы особенно высоко, считая себя истинными носителями стандартов Германской империи.
Члены экипажа все больше и больше ожидали часа, от веденного на чтение. Если после захвата они получали но
вые газеты, то на каждом лице читался вопрос: что будет на следующем брифинге? До этого момента не было спо ров по поводу того, кому нести вахту, но теперь никто не

рывной работы котлы покроются сажей и голубым пеплом. Уголь будет распределяться по решетке, как мусор. Во время поджигания большая его часть падала пря~о в пепел. Тре бовалось на пятьдесят пять процентов больше индийского угля, чем угля из Кардиффа, который считался лучшим в

Но противник тоже не выходил из битвы неповрежден ным. Корма корабля горела и он попытался выйти из радиу са действия снарядов «Эмдена~. Когда Мюллер увидел это, то попытался сократить разрыв между ними, но не смог.
Другой корабль был гораздо быстрее. Противник осознал, что вызывающая ужас немецкая торпеда имеет радиус дей
ствия три с половиной километра, и поэтому ни разу не по зволил расстоянию сократиться менее чем до семи тысяч метров.
В то же самое время снаряд попал по остаткам радио

Хорошо нацеленный вражеский огонь вскоре разрушил
электросистему пожаротушения. Прозвучало объявление
из боевой рубки, что оба главных предохранителя разбиты. Затем рулевые команды из боевой рубки прекратились. Вскоре прямым попаданием взорвало дымовую трубу у фок-мачты, которая упала на левой борт, словно сбитая по рывом ветра.

Командир корабля фон Мюллер знал, что конец близ ко. Отсутствие боеприпасов было решающим фактором.
Теперь приходилось вручную подносить снаряды, это была медленная и трудная работа. Тем не менее умирающий крейсер не прекращал огонь. Кто еще мог двигаться стоя
ли на своем посту или подносили боеприпасы. Мюллер на
блюдал за бесчисленными примерами мужества и упорст ва. Некоторыми орудиями управляло по одному раненому моряку.
Дополнительные разрушения механизма рулевого управ ления сделали «Эмден» почти неманевренным. Врагу уда

218 Во внутренних отсеках корабля стало невыносимо жар ко, краска лопалась на перегородках и перемычках. Огонь
распространялся с невероятной скоростью. Лоцман, лейте нант Гропиус, и его подчиненный в процессе управления
рулем, оказались отрезаны языками пламени. Точно также
были отрезаны несколько выживших, управляющих оруди ями. Еще один снаряд прямо попал по капитанской каюте,
снеся практически всех за борт; из восемнадцати человек ,смогли убежать только двое, сигнальщик первого класса и мичман сигнальной службы. Но новый огневой вал повалил их рядом с боевой рубкой. Пятнадцать минут спустя наши орудия выпустили пер

уходящий корабль в ярости и отчаянии. Он бросит нас на произвол судьбы? Казалось, что так, поскольку «Эмден» стал беспомощной развалиной. » Тем временем выжившие на палубе не сидели без дела. Машинное отделение, котельные, трюмы с боеприпасами

части корабля только через трещины и иллюминаторы. Много раз на спасателей налетали волны и почти смывали
224 их в море. Бригада с ведрами затушила последние тлеющие
огни на корме при помощи морской воды. Среди работаю
щих добровольцев был командир корабля фон Мюллер, его лицо и руки пожелтели от пороха, но он спокойно и твердо
руководил спасательными работами. До носа, где лежали большинство жертв, можно было добраться только выкла дывая доски. Врачи Аутер и Швабе оказывали помощь ра неным, используя лекарства, которые послали с «Сиднея ». Раненых завернули в шерстяные одеяла и уложили на отно

225 Вооруженный десантный отряд расселся по шлюпкам, за
ряженные орудия были нацелены, белые флаги трепетали
на носах лодок: Задерживая дыхание в напряжении, с «Сиднея» наблюдали за происходящим. Экипаж «Сиднея» штурмовал остров с взведенным и готовым к стрельбе ору жием. Но ничего не случилось. Не было произведено ни од ного выстрела. Затем воцарилась тишина, шлюпки верну лись, и старпом отчитался перед своим командиром:

голландский эсминец «Рысы}. Он встал рядом и осмотрел шхуну в поисках названия на корме, но его закрасили. Вна
чале показалось, что голландский корабль снова пошел своим курсом, но он развернулся в пяти тысячах метров и

«Айша» шла с течением на юго-восток. Остров Москит
был первым, вначале далеко по правому борту, затем стро го за кормой, наконец слева. Они встали южным курсом и

ну, как к боевому кораблю. Все условия ведения войны им выполняются. На борту находятся только члены Импера торского Германского ВМФ; поэтому экипаж организован
военным образом. Все офицеры на борту находятся на дей ствительной военной службе в Императорском ВМФ и
включены в официальный список Императорского ВМФ. На «Айше» реют военно-морской немецкий флаг и флаг Германской империи. Вопросы о том, как я получил судно во владение и по какому праву я являюсь командиром ко
рабля,

это положение вещей я должен только своему вышестоя
щему командованию. В пополнении припасов «Айши» я ссылаюсь на заявление Голландии о нейтралитете в войне,

Ситуация выглядела так, словно голландцы попытают
ся любой ценой задержать «Айшу»
из-за страха перед
японцами'. Однако шхуна зашла в гавань в связи с чрезвы
чайными обстоятельствами и таким образом они не могли

список необходимых вещей, и консул взял на себя их обес печение. Мюке также попросил врача с одного из стоящих
на якоре немецких судов. Хотя здоровье его экипажа до
этого времени было отличным, неподходящие жилые усло
вия, однообразная пища, плохая питьевая .вода и тропиче ский климат угрожали распространением болезней. В до полнительных членах экипажа было отказано. «Беспри страстный офицер » связался с Батавией и спросил, можно
ли поставить мыло, зубные щетки, расчески и подобные вещи вместе с остальными товарами. Он приложил большие
усилия, помогая им, обещая сделать, что может, но главной фигурой, принимающей решения, являлся начальник пор
та, бельгиец по рождению. От него они не ждали многого.
Целый день прошел без прибытия ожидаемых товаров. Тем временем немецкие корабли продолжали посылать все виды провизии, включая газеты. Наконец моряки смогли
прочитать немецкие газеты вместо пропагандистских сооб щений англичан.
В 19:00 часть провизии привезли к борту. Воду уже под няли на борт. Беспристрастный офицер, следуя указания из Батавии, все еще прилагал все попытки убедить Мюке позволить его офицерам и матросам быть интернирован ными, рисовал картину невозможности их выхода в море.

го крейсера «Кенигсберг» углем и припасами недалеко от восточного побережья Африки, больше нельзя было вы полнить. Крейсер, не имеющий под рукой запасов угля, встретился с превосходящими английскими военно-мор
скими силами, которые в конце концов блокировали его в узком проходе в дельте реки Руфиджи.

«Эмден» в конце августа 1914 года, когда пришли сообще ния о захвате русского крейсера «Рязань» в Цусимском проливе.
В середине сентября страна радостно услышала, что крейсер ведет рейдерскую войну в Бенгальском заливе и за
хватывает английские торговые суда. После объявления об

ться от подвигов небольшого немецкого боевого корабля. Энтузиазм, связанный с операциями независимо действу
ющего крейсера, дошел до пика после репортажей об успешной атаке на Пенанг и затоплении двух вражеских

4 ноября прозву
чало официальное объявление, что командир корабля «Эм ден» награжден Железным Крестом первой и второй степе
ни. Все остальные офицеры и уоррант-офицеры 32 и пятьде сят мичманов получили Железный Крест второй степени.
По всему миру «Эмден» кружил людям головы. Кораблю посвящались бесчисленные поэмы и песни на родине и в
других странах. Газеты были полны хвалебных статей. Даже в Соединенных Штатах возник клуб (
