Для того чтобы постичь движение повозки на холме, они исследуют пове дение шара на наклонной плоскости ; чтобы понять качание ноги атлета, они изучают маятник. Их оппоненты будут кричать, что понимание физи к и колебан и й не проливает света на тайн у наслаждения музыкой и что раз деление симфон ии на ноты разрушает понимание се композиции. Ученые ответят, что мы должны сначала понять, что такое ноты , затем перейти к пониманию того. почему некоторые аккорды гармонич н ы . а другие нет, и уж затем - на это может не хватить и десятилетий - попытаться понять психологическое и эстетическое воздействие последовател ьностей аккор дов. Наука стремится к полноте понимания , ни когда не теряя из виду ко нечную цель и не набрасываясь в нетерпении на полупроnеченные п ироги. П остигнут ли когда-нибудь ученые смысл радости постижения мира или спектакля наших жизней в не\1 и все и н ые великие 1юпросы, которые фи лософы, художники. прщюки и теологи считают территорией, это вопрос досужего умозрения. А мы все знае м , насколько оно бывало полезно.
Под великой идеей я понимаю простую концепцию с великими п оследст вия м и , идею-желудь, который разросся в огромн ы й дуб с ветвящимися

nриложениями, идею-паука, способного сплести огромную паутину и на тянуть ее на все изобилие объяснений и толкований. Мне пришлось дейст вовать весьма избирательно, и у меня нет сомнения, что другие могли бы nредъявить других сверхпауков, которые отловили бы других сочных мух науки. Однако здесь выбор мой. . Я сконцентрировался более на самих идеях, чем на nриложениях. Я на писал мало о черных дырах и космических путешествиях, и едва ли написал что-то - за исключением моих рассуждений в Эпилоге - о том чудесном сдвиге парадигм, который мы переживаем в текуший момент в форме ин формационных технологий и компьютеров. Моей целью бьшо выявить идеи, которые освещают путь и, в большинстве случаев, обеспечивают ос нову технологического прогресса. Наделенный богатым воображением ин теллектуальный наследник Галилея Фримен Дайсон nроводит различие между наукой, движимой концепциями, и наукой, движимой приборами. Поч ти все в этой книге относится к движимому концепциями. В этом различе нии Дайсон вторит другому мыслителю, проводившему различия, Френси су Бэкону, который разделял. идеи нafructifera, несущие плоды, и Zиcifera, не сущие свет. Я концентрируюсь на последних. Является ли молекулЯрная биология и следствия открытия структуры ДНК Zиcifera илиfructifera, явля ются ли они движимыми концепциями или движимыми приборами, и нуж но бьшо или нет включать их сюда, это вопрос спорный. Я сделал выбор в пользу первого варианта в каждом случае, поскольку никакое иное откры тие не внесло столь много в наше понимание и практическое использова ние биологии, и бьшо бы абсурдом его исключать. Возможно, в молекуляр ной биологии мы видим слияние Zиcifera иfructifera в науку беспрецедентно го динамизма.
о Изложение идей науки не похоже на роман, в котором события разворачи ваются в простой линейной последовательности. Чтобы ПОIJ:ЯТЬ научную идею, вам, возможно, потребуется в первый раз читать быстро, перескаки ная места, которые выглядят слишком трудными или (не дай бог) слишком скучными. Разумеется, хотя я считаю, что существует естественная после довательность изложения, как, например, восхождение из мрака основ к дневному светУ знакомого мира, или бурение вглубь от знакомого к более фундаментальному (я предпочитаю последнее), главы являются более или менее независимыми и могут читаться в любом порядке. Вторым аспектом, который следует иметь в виду, является характеризу ющий современную науку дрейф в сторону абстракции. Абстракция это еще одна важная грань пальца Галилея, и мы должны быть внимательны к

ее роли и ее значимости. Во-первых, абстрактное не означает бесполезное. Абстракция может иметь огромное практическое значение, потому что она указывает на неожиданные связи между явлениями и позволяет использо вать идеи, развитые в одной области науки, в друтих ее областях. Наиболее важно, однако, что абстракция является способом, позволяющим отвлечь ся от множества наблюдений и рассмотреть их в более широком контексте. Один из моментов, вызывающих наиболее rлубокое удовлетворение при занятиях наукой и при чтении о науке, момент , подобен опыту Кортеса, увидевшего, как океаны сливаются в единое целое, и заключает ся он во внезапном осознании связи между явлениями, которые раньше казались разобщенными. Я намереваюсь совершить с вами путешествие по высоким горным хребтам науки, где мы сможем почувствовать это слия ние, вызывающее священный ужас и удовлетворение, и пройти путь посте пенно раскрывающегося наслаждения все большей и большей абстракци ей. Итак, я начну с обезьян .и гороха, потом проведу вас сквозь атомы к кра соте, затем через пространство-время к вершине, к этому ужасающему апофеозу абстракции, к математике. Если вьr прочтете все главы последо вательно, вы обнаружите, ч:rо каждая последующая Глава утлубляет ваше понимание того, что вы узнали прежде.

изнь столь совершенна, что, как долгое время считали, ее было необхо димо сотворить особо. Ибо как может нечто столь удивительное и столь уникальное самопроизвольно возникнуть из безжизненной слизи?
В
самом деле, что является той главной частью вещей, которая наделяет их жиз нью? Ответы на эти и другие вопросы первоетеленной важности появились двумя волнами. Первой была волна эмпирических объяснений, когда наблю датели, по большей части натуралисты и геологи девятнадцатого века, при стально изучали внешние формы природы и получали далеко идушие выво ды. Затем пришла вторая волна, в двадцатом веке, когда кроты с глазами уче ных рьши ходы под поверхностью явлений и открывали молекулярную осно ву паутины жизни. Первый из этих подходов является предметом настоящей главы; второй, чрезвычайно обогативший наше понимание того, что значит бьпь живым, есть предмет следующей.

Маленький аппендикс чаще подвержен этой цепоч ке событий, чем большой аппендикс, поэтомУ аппендиксы подвергаются селективному давлению, которое становится на сторону большого аппен дикса в том смысле, что опаснее начать умеtfьшать его, чем оставаться с тем, что у нас есть. Следовательно, несмотря на опасность, эволюции крайне трудно удалить аппендикс. Естественный отбор является гонкой вооружений. Гипотеза КраеноИ Королевы - это идея о том, что хищники и же ртвы вовлечены в постоянное сражение, в котором хищники вырабатывают все более совершенные стра тегии и техники преследования, а жертвы поступают nодобным же обра зом.
