1signed the cont ract for Professional Tarot in May 200 I. I made steady progress on the manu script unt il September I I. Like the rest of the world. I watched in horror the unfo lding events o f tha t terrible day. About three ....-eeks later, my longtime therapist was killed in a hiking accident. Kathleen fell from a cliff to her death on my birthday. She was my sounding board and objective voice of reason . She guided me through the hills and valleys of wr iting all my books; I dedicated Tarot for theHealing Heart to her. Kathleen's death left a huge hole in my heart . I lost my ability to concentrate and didn't wan t to write m y own name, let alone a book. As I stared at the compu ter screen, all I could ~ was the Tower of tarot: people jum ping from the fiery World Trade Center and Kathleen falling to her death . Writing about a pack of cardsfelt trivial, even absurd. 1slid into depression. T The prospective deadline for the ma nuscript was December 200!. f, here Was no chance 1could finish it because I had n't wr itten a word or Over tw d 0 months. In November I asked Barbara Moore , product eVe!opment d. . coor inator at Llewellyn, for an exten sion. As usual, she

I revised almost all of wha t I ha d w ritten prior to September II , and the book is (hopefully) better for it. If Barbara had pushed me to crank OUI a product, I could not have finished the man uscript. Or, if I had completed it, it would have been a joyless obligation. Thank yo u, Barbara. for giving me exactly what I needed when I needed it-time to heal.
