He threw another glance at Lucas, eyeing the towel again. "Yes, alone," she repeated firmly. "Craig Lynch wasn't here with you?" Muncie finally asked. "You weren't having some good, clean fun together in that hot bath?" Talia's face reddened and Lucas slammed his glass down on the coffee table. His shoulders seemed hunched now, and she could see thick patches forming on his back. "Lucas, what's happening? Please tell me what's happening!" she cried, backing up as he ran past her and down the hallway. Reed was struggling to his feet. Muncie was making moaning noises. Panic stricken now, Talia ran after Lucas, following him into the bedroom just in time to see the French doors closing behind him. She rushed to them and flung them open, searching the yard, her eyes scanning the landscape. Then, she stepped back and gasped as she saw what was running between the trees. Chapter Twenty-Six

Victor and Caroline were half asleep when all of a sudden Victor sat up. His heart was racing, his breath coming in quick, short gasps.Danger! Something is here! He's here —nearby! Caroline muttered and stirred next to him. Sliding away from her, he stood up, sniffing the air, scanning the trees. Instinct took over as Victor scurried to the other side of the pond. The rushing water should have made it hard to hear, but his ears could easily pick up the sound of breaking twigs not far away. Something, or someonewas running through the woods toward them. Sensing her presence behind him, Lucas turned, his gaze locking into hers. "Let us explain, Talia," Victor begged. "Don't be afraid," Lucas echoed. She looked from one to the other, her eyes filling with tears. Then, as they watched, her hair became thicker, her shoulders hunched, her arms began to lengthen. She dropped to all fours as her nose became a snout. Her deep umber fur was thick and lustrous, her face banded by a white mask, her eyes large and almond-shaped. Victor stepped forward, but her growl stopped him. Lucas spoke softly. "I know you're confused and frightened. Shift back and we'll explain everything." She yowled sharply, then reversed the transformation. She stood up and looked at them. "Good God," Victor said, looking at a spot over Talia's shoulder.


Caroline was standing along the tree line, staring in shock and disbelief at the scene before her.

Lucas easily shook him off, biting at his neck, drawing blood. They rolled around on the ground, fur standing on end, horrible growls emerging from their throats. Claws dug into tender flesh, teeth sank down into muscle as the two battled it out. Sobbing loudly now, Caroline turned and ran back into the woods. Behind her, she could hear the terrible sounds of a fight to the death.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Caroline ran out of the woods straight into the arms of Detective Reed. Hysterical, she collapsed there, rambling incoherently about wolves. Reed, still reeling from his encounter with Lucas Knight, tried to understand what she was talking about. The front yard of the cottage was alive with police activity. Reed stood up and signaled for a paramedic to take care of Caroline. Then he walked toward the woods. Muncie drew his gun and followed.

Going in a straight line from where Caroline came stumbling out of the woods, the two detectives soon came to the clearing. There, they found Talia on her knees, naked and sobbing. "Victor Kane killed Craig Lynch and tried to kill us," Lucas told them. Talia stirred in his arms, but he held her tightly, willing her not to speak. "Don't say? Going to the storeroom, she got a large roll of brown wrapping paper, a ball of twine and a pair of scissors. She intended to wrap up all of Talia's paintings and get them out of here. She would call the courier service and have them delivered back to the cottage. No work done by that bitch would ever be allowed inside of these walls again! Let her display her dark, ominous-looking crap in her lover's shop among the dusty junk he tried to pass off as antiques! Caroline worked furiously for the next two hours, grateful when she was finished and the call was made.
