Sigmund Freud is called the father of psychoanalysis. It has been told by the psychologists that much of the human behaviour is irrational. The question is where from this irrationality comes ? It has been held that the subconscious part of the mind controls much of the human behaviour. It is also held that most of the ailment of a man are psychological and need psychological treatment. Unfortunately due to lack of research in India, very little work in the field of psychoanalysis has been done so far. Therefore, one has to depend mostly on foreign work in this area. 1 Introductory SUIVey
Psychoanalysis did not spring full grown from the brow of Freud. It has a history. Nor has there been a straight line of development. Since it evolved under the stress of practical exigencies. it shows gaps. regressions. by-paths. as well as progressions. Hence. a historical survey of analysis is necessary for a thorough understanding. In this book I shall attempt to trace its growth from its beginning in hypnosis to its present-day condition. Psychoanalysis is first of all. a method and technique of therapy for mental and emotional disorder. around which there has evolved a definite body of theory. Until recent years the guiding mind in its evolution was that of its founder. Sigmund Freud. and psychoanalysts still adhere pretty faithfully to many or all of his basic principles.
