e pili precisamente i120 luglio 2006, il ritornello di With a Little Help from My Friends continuava a risuonanni in testa mentre il sindaco di Roma mi spiegava, nel suo ufficio in Campidoglio, che voleva realizzare un suo vecchio sogno: organizzare, sorprendentemente, un festival della Matematica! Sulle prime I'idea mi sembro balzana.

Agli aItri, cioe ainon matematici, potra sembrare priva d'interessc.

10 no.) Dunque.

Vedete, Ie cose diventano pill intricate. Eh, sl, in effetti, 21 = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6. Dunque 21 eil numero triangolare eli 6. Ma non siamo giunti alla fine! Anche 6 e un numero triangolare, perche 6 = 1 + 2 + 3. Abbiamo finalmente finito? Eh, no, rni dispiace. Guardate: 2 -> 3 -> 6 -> 21 -> 231 -> 26796 -> 359026206 -> 64419908476890321-> 2076895351339769460477611370186681-> 2156747150208372213435450937462082366919951682912789656986079991221
Come diciamo in inglese, «Let's quit while we're ahead» .

Tutti i matematici passano illoro tempo cosi? Be', la maggior parte fa indagini simili, solo in spazi molto pili astratti.
