Special t to all those liho heloed this book take form: rlartin Solares for his thoUghtful introduction and Junot Diaz for his kind 'lexico, but rather to settle dmffl in a place Nhich he thought ,"ould be ideal for Norking calmly. That's hON. tired from years of addressing American politics, he came to find himself at the epicenter of the Oaxaca conflict. Besides t,.,o amusing and unusual autobioGraphies (Stripped and Stop Forgetting to Remember), Kuper has publiShed various graphic adaptations of books like Upton Sinclair's The Jungle and Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis. His Diario de Oaxaca reveals haN a deft artist can manage to combine so many aspects of a city on a SinGle page: poetry. magic, beauty, mystery, fear, as ,.,ell as the different faces that protest can assume ,,,hen politicians hold a city hostaGe. Collages, sketches and por trai ts of i'lonarch butterflies, cactus. ants and threatening scorpions alternate '''i th graffiti reproductions that demand the reSiGnation of the governor and on the spot dra, dngs of the sho,.,do'il\ bet,.,een the police and strikers. Thanks to Kuper's immense senSitivity. this testimony of the Oaxacan enigma is light years ahead of the r,janichean portraits that some of his countrymen have produced about any country south of the Rio Grande. Prefacio

Bienvenidos a Oaxaca. Nxico.

""i.Posiblemente el lunes?'"'
