For example. the uerb "to be cal/ed" in German is heißen. The stem of heißen is heiß-. lf you want to say "/ am called." you add the ending -e to the stem: ich heiße. Here is the full present tense of heißen:
Sing ular ich ......... .... .......

These uerb endings are the same for a/mosl al/ verbs-so you only haue to /earn them once.
Capital l e tter s Capitals are used more frequently in German than in English. They are used: • at the beginning of a sentence (as in English) • for proper nouns. e.g .. peop/e's names (as in English) • for all other nouns. e.g .. Name "name ... Tag "day" • for Sie. "you." Ihnen. "to you." and Ihr. "your" The word for ''1"-ich-doesn 't have a cap ital (un less it comes at the begin ni ng of a sentence).

DidYou Know 7 G erman speakers are generally a little moreformal in the way they address each other than English speakers. lt's quite usual. and not unfriendly. for colleagues and neighbors to address each other by their last name. as Herr Schmidt or Frau Braun. rather than use their first names. Howeuer. the younger generation is more relaxed about this. Frau is the title for all adult women. whether they are married or not. You should use the title Fräulein. "Miss." only to refer to a female child or adolescent-if at all.

No uns- gen der Nouns in German haue one of three genders: masculine. feminine or neuter. The words for ''the " and "a" (the articles) change according to the gender of the noun. For example: definite article "the" Masculine: Feminine: Neuter:
indefinite article "a"
der Kaffee
ein Kaffee
die Wurst
eine Wurst
das Brot
ein Brot
Note that the definite article is die for all nouns in the plural. regardless of gender. die Pommes frites . Ein(e) "a" has no direct plural. There is no particular logic as to whether a noun is masculine. feminine . or neuter-although there are some clues that we'll be looking at later. You simply haue to learn the gender with the noun. For this reason. it's best to learn the noun with its definite article: not Brot but das Brot. From now an. all the nouns in the Ward Bank will be shown with their definite article. Don't worry too much if you can't remember the correct article at firstl
