N i c h t s , w a s A n t i s t h e n e s n i c h t gewesen wäre: Romantiker, Asket, Voluntarist, Ökonom, Pythagoreer, Symbolist, Dynamiker, Sozialist und vieles a n d e r e m e h r . So v i e l s e i t i g der M a n n , so a u ß e r o r d e n t l i c h seine B e d e u t u n g : A n t i s t h e n e s g i l t als d i e zentrale G e s t a l t der S o k r a t i k , d i e X e n o p h o n ü b e r a l l k o p i e r t , P i a t o n überall k r i t i s i e r t ; m e h r noch: er g i l t als

zwischen H e l l a s und d e m O r i e n t " , ja sogar als "ahnender V o r l ä u f e r w i c h t i g s t e r n a c h a n t i k e r , ja m o d e r n e r Denk40 und Lebenswege" . Es kann gar kein Z w e i f e l s e i n , daß es d i e s e n v i e l s e i t i g - g e n i a l e n A n t i s t h e n e s n i c h t g e g e b e n hat; kein Z w e i f e l a u c h , daß d i e zahlreichen H y p o t h e s e n und N e b e n h y p o t h e s e n , d i e d i e s e n A n t i s t h e n e s p l a u s i b e l m a c h e n s o l l e n , ü b e r t r i e b e n sind und g e n a u e r e r N a c h p r ü f u n g n i c h t s t a n d h a l t e n .
