CELANESE CORP. recently announced an agreement to acquire certain assets from ASHLAND INC. , including two product lines (Vinac ® and Flexbond ®) that will reportedly support the strategic growth of the Celanese Emulsion Polymers business. Revenues of Vinac and Flexbond were approximately $45 million in 2010. “This acquisition will accelerate the growth of the Emulsion Polymers business throughout the Americas in key segments such as adhesives, textiles, coatings and paper,” said Phillip McDivitt, general manager of Celanese Emulsion Polymers. “The addition of Vinac and Flexbond will expand our product portfolio while building upon Celanese’s emulsion process technology at our Enoree, S.C., and Boucherville, Quebec, Canada, manufacturing facilities.” Vinac products are used to make a variety of adhesives for use in woodworking and paper packaging and converting applications. GE TO BUILD LARGEST U.S. SOLAR PLANT

LANXESS announced it has acquired Pittsburgh, PA-based VERICHEM INC. The transaction reportedly bolsters LANXESS’ position in the U.S. material protection market and broadens its global biocide manufacturing network. LANXESS will gain access to a complementary portfolio of biocides, as well as active ingredients registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The materials are used to protect coatings, adhesives and construction materials, as well as pulp and paper. The biocides can prevent the deterioration and discoloring of materials caused by microorganisms. Verichem is a privately owned company with approximately 20 employees. The company recorded sales of roughly $10 million in 2010. Verichem’s production site is located close to LANXESS’ U.S. headquarters in Pittsburgh. Verichem will be integrated into the LANXESS Material Protection Products (MPP) business unit, reportedly one of the world’s leading suppliers of biocides. GE recently announced plans to build its new solar panel factory in Aurora, CO. When completed, the advanced manufacturing facility will create 355 jobs and will reportedly be larger than any existing solar panel factory in the country today. GE says it anticipates the new factory will start up earlier than expected, with the first panels coming off the line in 2012 and commercial availability in 2013. GE will locate the factory in an existing building in Aurora, just east of Denver. This location, which is also in proximity to GE’s existing Solar Center of Excellence, reportedly enables an accelerated startup schedule with production equipment installation beginning in January 2012. At capacity, the new factory will produce enough panels each year to power 80,000 homes and will be larger than 11 football fields. ANNOUNCEMENT ADHESION ’13 SEEKS PAPERS Adhesion ’13 organizers have issued a call for papers for the conference, which is scheduled to take place Sept. 4-6, 2013, at the National Science Learning Centre, University of York, UK. The organizing committee is seeking papers on all aspects of the science and technology of adhesion and adhesives. PPG INDUSTRIES recently announced it has finalized an agreement to acquire European coatings company Dyrup A/S, Copenhagen, Denmark, from its owner, Monberg & Thorsen, a public holding company. The final transaction value, including assumed debt, has been set at @115 million (~$160 million), based on final due diligence. Both parties have agreed to a closing date of Jan. 5, 2012. “Once finalized, the acquisition of Dyrup will enable PPG to continue to expand its geographic reach within Europe, as well as its product portfolio to include Dyrup’s established strong brands, particularly in wood care products,” said J. COMPANY NEWS AKZONOBEL has announced it is planning to invest around @ 60 million (~ $83 million) to increase the production capacity of its Automotive and Aerospace Coatings business in China.

This investment will reportedly provide additional momentum for the company’s accelerated growth strategy of achieving revenue of $3 billion in China by 2015 while strengthening its leadership position in the country’s automotive refinishes market. In addition, the company reports it will build related warehousing, quality control laboratories, support facilities and offices on the new site. AVERY DENNISON CORP. has released its first Sustainability Report, “Together We’re Stronger,” detailing the company’s 2010 sustainability initiatives, performance and goals. COMPANY NEWS APPLAUSE ASC REPORTS RECORD CONVENTION ATTENDANCE The Adhesive and Sealant Council Inc. (ASC) recently reported that a record 480 adhesive and sealant supply chain professionals participated in the Fall Convention and Expo, which took place in October in Indianapolis, IN. ASC member companies, industry supply chain partners, and affiliated suppliers took part in the 46 business sessions that focused on emerging formulation trends, raw material strategies, end user requirements, and government regulations. In addition, 55 companies shared industry innovations and connected with manufacturer attendees at the expo. The PSA Short Course was also co-located at the convention; 55 engineers, chemists, sales and marketing staff from manufacturers, raw material, and equipment suppliers learned about pressure-sensitive adhesives. “The industry is responding to the current business cycle by focusing on product innovation and relationship development in order to position itself for future growth,” said Matthew E. Croson, ASC president. “This third consecutive attendance record is a strong indicator of an industry that is focused, disciplined, and very importantly, optimistic about its future.” This fall’s convention featured 46 speakers from Walmart-Canada; John Deere; Kingspan Insulated Panels; General Motors; Chemical Market Associates; ICIS Chemical Business; Underwriters Laboratories; Environmental Protection Agency; National Institute of Standards and Technology; Sealing, Waterproofing and Restoration Institute; Post Carbon Institute; University of Chicago; and other supply chain leaders. LOPAREX GROUP plans to build a 35,400 m² (380,000 ft²) greenfield facility for the production of siliconized paper and polymer films (release liners) on the recently purchased 5.7-hectare property at the Hemaraj Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate (HESIE) of Thailand. The new world-class facility will support the company’s manufacture of release liners to global markets for automotive, electronics, appliances, composites, hygiene, medical, graphics, labels, tapes and other industrial applications. Jan Hilbrink, currently managing director for Europe, will lead the construction and startup of the new plant. The plant is scheduled to begin production by the end of 2012 and will feature solvent and solvent-free products, and poly-coated liners, as well as printing and slitting capabilities. reportedly have the ability for rapid and substantial expansion to meet future market demands. Of the 2011 third quarter worldwide sales growth, 3.7% came from acquisitions, 3.1% from foreign exchange impacts, 1.9% from organic volume growth and 0.9% from higher year-onyear selling prices. Organic volume growth was below recent trend levels, reflecting weakness across the electronics market and generally slowing economic growth in the developed world. 3M also noted that a number of its customers reduced inventories during the quarter in anticipation of slowing demand. Excluding the positive impact of currency, five of the company’s six business segments expanded sales in the quarter, with Industrial and Transportation up 15.1%; Safety, Security and Protection Services up 14.1%; Health Care up 10.9%; Consumer and Office up 4.6%; and Electro and Communications up 1%. Fiscal 2012 first quarter net sales of $985.9 million were 10.2% ahead of the $894.8 million reported a year ago. Net income attributable to RPM stockholders was $76.8 million, an increase of 11.3% compared to $69.0 million reported in the fiscal 2011 first quarter. The Dow Chemical Co. recently announced that the SCG-DOW GROUP , a joint venture between Dow and SCG, has reached a key milestone for its new propylene oxide (PO) facility in Thailand. The plant has been ramped up to stable production levels in preparation for the full capacity run, which has been scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2011. The world-scale plant, located within the Asia Industrial Estates (AIE) site near Map Ta Phut, Thailand, will have a nameplate capacity of 390 kilotons per year of PO via the hydrogen peroxide to propylene oxide (HPPO) December 2011

According to Holger Baer, global manufacturing and technology director for PO/PG, “Within three years, this is the second world-scale plant brought on-line with the innovative Dow-BASF HPPO process. ADVANCING ADHESIVES The companies’ work can potentially leapfrog today’s current attempts at stacking chips vertically—known as 3D packaging. The joint research tackles some of the thorniest technical issues underlying the industry’s move to true 3D chip forms. For example, new types of adhesives are needed that can efficiently conduct heat through a densely packed stack of chips and away from heat-sensitive components such as logic circuits. “ To d a y ’s c h i p s , i n c l u d i n g t h o s e containing ‘3D’ transistors, are in fact 2D chips that are still very flat structures,” said Bernard Meyerson, vice president of Research for IBM. “Our scientists are aiming to develop materials that will allow us to package tremendous amounts of computing power into a new form factor—a silicon ‘skyscraper.’ We believe we can advance the state-of-art in packaging, and create a new class of semiconductors that offer more speed and capabilities while they keep power usage low—key requirements for many manufacturers, especially for makers of tablets and smartphones.”

3M AND IBM TO DEVELOP SEMICONDUCTOR ADHESIVES New adhesives will make it possible to build commercial microprocessors composed of layers of up to 100 separate chips. M and IBM recently announced a plan to jointly develop the first adhesives that can be used to package semiconductors into densely stacked silicon “towers.” The companies are aiming to create a new class of materials that will make it possible to build, for the first time, commercial microprocessors composed of layers of up to 100 separate chips.

Such stacking would allow for dramatically higher levels of integration for information technology and consumer electronics applications. Processors could be tightly packed with memory and networking, for example, into a “brick” of silicon that would create a computer chip 1,000 times faster than today’s fastest microprocessor, enabling more powerful smartphones, tablets, computers, and gaming devices.

Many types of semiconductors, including those for servers and games, currently require packaging and bonding techniques that can only be applied to individual chips. 3M and IBM plan to develop adhesives that can be applied to silicon wafers, coating hundreds or even thousands of chips at a single time. Current processes are akin to frosting a cake slice by slice. Under the agreement, IBM will draw on its expertise in creating unique semiconductor packaging processes, and 3M will provide its knowledge in developing and manufacturing adhesive materials. “Capitalizing on our joint know-how and industry experience, 3M looks forward to working alongside IBM, a leader in developing pioneering packaging for nextgeneration semiconductors,” said Herve Gindre, division vice president at 3M’s Electronics Markets Materials Division. “3M has worked with IBM for many years, and this brings our relationship to a new level. What can you recommend? QUESTION: We are manufacturing chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) solvent cement for CPVC pipes. Our final product’s viscosity increases with storage. What is the solution to stabilize the viscosity? ANSWER: Although I do not know all the details of your formula, I can suggest that loss of chlorine from PVC in your product (often called dehydrochlorination) may be contributing to the problem. The first thing to check is that you have totally dissolved the PVC in your solvents without gel formation. You also need to ensure that the solvents in your products are dry; the addition of a drying agent may help here. You should also look at adding stabilizers to your product. The common stabilizers for PVC are usually organotin compounds and phosphites. If you don’t stop this loss of chlorine, then, in addition to changes in viscosity, you might also see corrosion of metallic packages due to the generation of HCl in storage, particularly if storing at high temperatures.
